Pete Newell dies

It’s sad to hear about the passing of Pete Newell. He was the originator of the Big Man’s Camp, which was held several times in Hawai‘i.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3709014

Riley Wallace described Newell as an “absolute gentleman.”
They met when Wallace was coaching at UH. Newell addressed the team every year.
“You had to earn his respect, but once you had it, you had it for life,” Wallace said.
Newell spoke highly of Wallace. Because of that, Bob Knight and Wallace became friends.
Newell worked closely with Merv Lopes, who helped run the Big Man’s Camps in Hawai‘i. Jarinn Akana’s association with Newell helped Akana earn a coaching job in the NBA.

In UH time, today is back to being today.
The Warriors were supposed to have a Tuesday schedule today, but instead they had what coach Mack described as a “half-Tuesday.”
The players were “introduced” to the next opponent, Idaho — given bios, tendencies — but did not practice on the field. Instead, they ran sprints. Because it had rained, Mack said he did not want to “tear up the field” by having a regular practice.
The Warriors will go in pads tomorrow.

For the past several months, we’ve heard that if Brent Guy got fired at Utah State, John L. Smith would be the leading candidate as the successor. Well, Guy is now out …

Happy belated birthday to Diana.

Deepest sympathy to the family of Luke Nishikawa, a wonderful guy who died Saturday night in Angwin, Calif. He was 22. In his spare time, the Honolulu resident led a campus outreach program called Homeless Ministries.

Even with Idaho and Wazzu coming the next two weeks, I hope the Warriors are prepared and don’t underestimate them.

dj – I hope the run doesn’t include green bottles and CR shots, for the football team’s sake. I want them to be on top of their game this coming 3 weeks.

so bball struggles…..new faces and all.

    why try a big lineup?

    flemings to 2 guard.
    balocka at center
    amis at the 4
    adams the 3 fwd
nitoto for now at the point.

we lack outside shooting. i could see flemings and adams doing some damage with a two man game. balocka picking up the garbage. amis focusing on defense and ten footers.

the key may be, if and when thompson gets back to playing shape. i like nitoto’s effort but he has a ways to go. gotta remove the headlights.

    …nuff said

  37. al November 17, 2008 9:05 am

    Just talked to Ronnie.

They are back home and the boys don’t have school. Lucky for them. Ian’s school was an evacuation center.

She at least has her priorities straight and remembered to grab the boys’ mini helmets and her Sugar Bowl ticket (once in a lifetime) before evacuating! True Warrior fan!

  40. protector November 17, 2008 9:18 am

I agree with ‘djmitcho’ –hope they don’t underestimate the upcoming opponents. Idaho was competitive in the first half against Boise State, only to have BS get untracked in the 2nd . I don’t think there’s too much of a chance that the team will be complacent since Coach Mack is at the helm, though. Still, I think we’ve all learned not to take too much for granted this season. Is there a chance we’ll see Blaze Soares in there?? Also, did Paipai Falemalu redshirt this year?? Just wondering.

  41. bb November 17, 2008 9:22 am

Hawaii Bowl 2008 ticket purchasing notes:

I will never rely on the Best Seats Available button. It would have given me seats in the upper orange near the center. By clicking on the stadium section, I was able to secure blue first row MM (30 yd line) a few weeks ago. What I regret most is NOT checking the brown middle sideline area. Do you folks realize that just a few minutes ago I checked, and tickets like these are still available? 3(brown) MM row 1 seats 5-6. I know it’s like I’m expecting UH to beat Idaho and Wazzu, but I didn’t want to wait for the actual qualification like in previous years, and ending up with seats on the 10 yd line in the red. BTW, during that time of the day, would the sun hit the brown section on the afternoon sun side?

  76. A-House November 17, 2008 11:46 am

    Chawan,

What is that chant your area does when the other team calls a time out? I heard it on Friday and last night and the only thing I could make out was the end of it where everyone yells “SIT DOWN”.

Me and my friends laughed our a$$es off at that. That was awesome indeed.

BTW… Right now I’m feeling 80% confident I will venture out to Manoa in the late hours of a worknight… We shall see how the day goes for me.

  79. Jason November 17, 2008 11:54 am

    Happy belated birthday, Diana!

I will be there tonight. I am done with my class today, and now I’m spending the rest of my day here at UH, catching up on homework that I procrastinated on. 🙂

  80. A-House November 17, 2008 12:01 pm

John L Smith, John L Smith – why should that name ring bells?

ah, is he the CRY BABY former coach of a Big 10 team who cried zebra foul after losing in Aloha Stadium?

just like the former Wyoming coach who begged not to play Hawaii because of travel and students being away from the classroom so long?

but, alas, both came and went home “crying”.

One thing the Big 10 will be known for is the “cry baby coaches” who lose in Hawaii and go home to tell only their side of the story on why they lost and their supporters, fans, school officials, and other conference schools “eat that up”.

what’s even more sad is that the WAC agreed to allow only Big 10 refs to officiate any game in Aloha Stadium for any Big 10 school. I hope Benson got more b-lls to stand up to that kind of bullsh-t!!!! But, then again, maybe that’s why he was not invited to join the MWC when they broke away. If he was and turned them down, then I sincerely apologize for my comment.

let’s hope that the Big East, ACC, and SEC Athletic Directors and coaches will agree to play the Warriors in Hawaii just to prove that they can be better than the Big 10.

  81. Da Punchbowl Kid November 17, 2008 12:06 pm

  88. expat November 17, 2008 12:37 pm

Too bad for Brent Guy. Utah State has made some progress, but evidently not enough. It is a tough thing to turn a program around, especially at a school that doesn’t have many resources or a marquee conference or history to help recruiting.

Whoever takes on the UDub disaster is going to at least have resources, history, and conference to assist them. It just goes to show what a remarkable job JJ did at UH. He had some stars align for him too.

SMU is proving a different story, despite a team with a proud history and money along with the fertile recruiting grounds of Texas. Looks almost certain that SMU will finish the season without a FBS win. Of SMU’s 10 losses 4 were by a touchdown or less and none were within a field goal. That’s pretty rough.

I watched the 2nd half of the Idaho – BSU game. They really aren’t very good. I thought that the difference between them and Utah State was that Utah State has some athletes who have game-changing potential.

Idaho beat NMSU and FCS team Idaho State. San Jose State was the only team that beat them who wasn’t able to score at least 42 points. The 42 points was by Utah State. San Diego State’s ONLY win of the season was when they ran up 45 points on Idaho.

Too bad Idaho doesn’t play Washington State this year, which they typically do, as it might have been their best shot at winning in the series.

So the next two weeks Hawaii plays teams with one FBS win between them. Let’s hope the guys can keep up the intensity. We saw at Utah State what can happen when the team loses focus.

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid November 17, 2008 12:55 pm

    Stretch,

I’m sorry, it’s not you. I have a lot on my mind lately.

The mother of my kids (my ex) lost her battle with cancer last month, and as much as I try not to let it affect me, it has. That’s part of the reason why you haven’t seen me at a lot of Tsaiko functions lately. This situation has been ongoing for a few months, and my youngest son was caring for her right til the end, and had to watch her fade away. He’s coming out here soon because he needs to be with me. So if I seem like a flake, you’re probably right, but honestly, I just haven’t felt terribly social lately
Otherwise you, the rest of the Tsaikos and the Warrior Beat have been the biggest source of laughs for me a lot of times, and a lot of days, coming on the blog and getting dogged and dogging back and laughing about it has been great therapy. I apologize for not being able to roll with it today, I’m just not myself some days.

I hope you understand. You’re a good guy and I am proud to call you a friend.

  94. Jason November 17, 2008 1:01 pm

He should have redshirted last season, but as you might recall, they decided to activate him for the final couple of games.

A melancholy day on the WB today.

    Sorry for your loss, DPK.

Never recall hearing a bad thing about Pete Newell.

It would be nice to end the day with a Bball “W” but in the meantime, a Princess video might be nice. (hint hint)

  104. jm2375 November 17, 2008 1:44 pm

    Good afternoon gangees!

Condolences to DPK and his ohana and the Newell & Nishikawa families.

To all those headed to the bball game tonight – have fun and cheer loud! I’ll be with you in spirit, at least for the 1st half. After that, I might be snoring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…. Please be careful out on the roads tonight.

    OK back to work. bbl.

  105. jm2375 November 17, 2008 1:46 pm

Oh yeah, Happy Belated Birthday to Kekoa’s much better half, Diana. Da guy better have treated you *really* well, or I will sic Homey’s poodles on him!

  106. Justin November 17, 2008 1:54 pm

What exactly happened to Jeramy Bryant? He looked like a good player during camp.

  107. Bulla November 17, 2008 1:57 pm

    happy bday to diana 🙂

dpk, you and your ohana are in my prayers, this too shall pass….

steveM., i have a really funny story about after saturday night’s escapades, and i’ll share with the crew

lyn and i are driving down kuhio ave., and right in front of the Mirmar Hotel, lyn says, ‘honey, pull up, i think i just saw that hooker’s butt,’. so i move up but now the hooker is sitting between 2 military guys….and she makes eye contact with me, so the hooker smiles and says to lyn and I, ‘don’t worry, i do couples too!’

i was in shock, and as i pulled away, my favorite bomber lynn says, ‘what did she say? i wish i was more coherent, i’d like to have a conversation with her…’

that was funny, oh well, such is the antics of the post Genji crowd

and yes, mrs bulla did have some sore muscles from her Genji-robics. haha

  108. Ralph November 17, 2008 2:04 pm

when an opposing team member fouls out, we chant:
    “ALOHA O’E….
    ALOHA O’E…
    SIT DOWN!!!!!”

it started who knows when, but the band kept it going all these years. and then i think we/they were told not to yell it, but now that we’re just fans, they can’t tell us that.

  111. Rob25 November 17, 2008 2:59 pm

DPK – I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Please know that you are in my prayers.

I’m so glad that you were able to come join us a couple of weekends ago at Bay View. It was nice to see you and Sweety, especially in light of all that you have been dealing with.

  112. Rob25 November 17, 2008 3:13 pm

OK, I am seriously thinking about going tonight, but I don’t want to sit by myself. When I get off work, I am going to sleep and if I get up in time, I will be at the game and looking for a Tsaiko to cheer with. This is really going to mess with my body clock, but hey, that’s why we’re dedicated fans…Tsaikos!

Browns vs Bills on Monday night….Brady Quinn threw only 1 pass beyond ten yards last week out of 22 passes…they say its a confidence builder to limit his progressions to 2 receivers-they should have drafted Colt, faster learning curve…

  123. curveball November 17, 2008 4:01 pm

So funny. KEEP DOING IT, lemme see if I can get others around me to do so also. Also, since tonight looks like a sparse crowd (hope not) I’ll try to get me and my friends to sit either near the band or at least behind the UH bench.

DPK, if it helps, I’ve never met you and have no idea who you are, but you’re one of my favorite bloggers on this site. You always make me laugh, like Stephen Tsai. Hope you navigate through these rough waters as soon as possible.
Anyways, people always say I’m a flake as well. Of course, as for me, they are right.

    DPK…

Hey … sorry braddah for your deep loss. Although she was your ex-wife, I know she played a very special part in your life and your kids lives and that she always resided in her own part of your heart. Sometimes it helps to climb a hill somewhere or go someplace private and have a long conversation with the departed. Talk… wait to hear the response in your hear, not your head.. and ask all the questions you need to ask.. say, all you have always wanted to say, have a good cry, and know it hurts because you loved. Loving makes you a special human being. Being loved makes her a very special human, too.

Take care DPK. Watch your diet as even the slightest depression can wreck havoc on your auto-immune system. Get flu shots if you can.

  134. wafan November 17, 2008 4:50 pm

How’s everything with you and the boys? I was meaning to give you a ring and see if you was alright when I heard the fires started heading towards Yorba Linda, but my cell was AFU and wouldn’t call out. Anyway, good thing you posted on the blog that everything was alright and you crack me up with the stuffs you took. Anyway, if you guys ever need a place for stay I get two extra rooms in my hale…

  142. J-Dog November 17, 2008 5:12 pm

Good to hear that Kenny Estes is redshirting this year. We’ll need him with the loss of our seniors in the secondary.

Are they possibly looking at him as a kicker as well? I remember someone saying he was a pretty good soccer player in hs.

  143. J-Dog November 17, 2008 5:13 pm

I won’t be getting my Hawai’i Bowl tickets until UH becomes eligible. Don’t wanna jinx them.

  144. Cheyah! November 17, 2008 5:20 pm

    Hey DPK,
Deepest sympathy to you and your family especially the kids. My nephews lost their mother (my sister) a couple years ago. Its always hard to cope with the loss of someone but even harder when children are involved.

  145. Pauoa Boy November 17, 2008 5:24 pm

    Jason,
Howzit my bruddah…about Parghalava… My perception of Lasha isn’t premature, I’ve been playing basketball over 20 years and know what I see. I don’t like to compare Lasha to Matt. They both play erratic and hustle but Gibson was smarter with the ball, could create his own shot and played solid defense. I haven’t seen any of that from Lasha. His handle is suspect, decision making is awful, defense is horrendous. He’s more of a spot up shooter and needs to come off screens and move around to get open looks. Not saying he won’t develop into something later on but I don’t see it happening. Don’t get me wrong I love a player who hustles but running around without focus will lead you to la-la land, which is where he seems to be playing as of late. Lasha to me is not a good ball-handler or defender and like I said should be moving all over the court coming off screens and pick and rolls so he can score. He obviously is the only decent outside shooter we have on the team from what I’ve seen. Everyone else is more slash to the basket type players. Our offense needs to change though if we are to get the best out of our players. They seem so lost and the offense is so stagnant. I think they should try and push the ball and play a more transition style of game. Our half-court flex/motion offense does not suit the abilities of our players IMO…

  146. Pauoa Boy November 17, 2008 5:34 pm

    Kay back to Football…

So we playing the Potatoe guys this week huh…

Kama Bailey is there primary PR/KR right? Too bad for him when he gets lit up this weekend by our special teams! Nothing against Kama, cause he’ll be dangerous for the Vandals in a couple years but playing against the home team, sorry bruddah you going get pounded! Nice though to see another Hawaii product doing well in college elsewhere. Kama supposedly leads the Vandals in all purpose yardage this year as a freshman!

  147. Pauoa Boy November 17, 2008 5:39 pm

    Pomai,
So are we taking scores yet for this weeks game???

    Warrior Potatoe Poundahz – 41 Mashed Potatoes – 17

  148. LizKauai [Believer] November 17, 2008 5:48 pm

J-Dog- I hope Kenny will have a chance to move into his potential next year. He is a do it all” player and pretty much did it all in high school. He has great legs- kicking and running- and was on the state champ relay team and a very good soccer player. Plus a great wessai personality.

  149. Ralph November 17, 2008 5:51 pm

Trent Edwards is a terrible qb for the Bills…..he is a year ahead of colt but to pass on colt to expect Edwards to shine is difficult to understand..3 interceptions in the first qtr alone and he isn’t that accurate with poor timing…

  150. Jason November 17, 2008 5:56 pm

Pauoa Boy: I think you’re definitely right about the lack of outside shooting. In fact, Riley Wallace said so this morning on the radio. But I’m going to be a little more patient on Parghalava. If he doesn’t pan out, then he doesn’t pan out. But I’m seeing flashes of ability out of him. If he just slows down and plays at 100% speed instead of 1000%, I think we might get a better idea of what he can bring to the team. Right now, though, I’m not sure where his head is. Maybe it’s the turmoil back home, maybe it’s overcompensating for the increased speed of the game, IDK.

  151. Stretch November 17, 2008 6:06 pm

Time for me to take a nap before heading off to the game tonight. See some of you guys later.

  152. Kazz November 17, 2008 6:11 pm

    Jason,

Lasha Parghalava reminds me of Predrag Savovic in some ways, but Parghalava has been a turnover machine in the first two games. If he settles down and has room to take those threes he’ll be averaging 20 points a game. However he has the potential to create many turnovers. Parghalava and Nitoto are the two most valuable defenders in one on one situations.

You’re right, Parghalava’s effort is there and he brings that Matt Gibson-type intensity to the game, but obviously he’s not as polished as Gibson just yet and watching him attempt to keep the flex motion under control has looked like watching a lit match being in charge of dynamite.

So far my favorite, Petras Balocka has been pretty solid and he is looking stronger on the ball with each passing game.

Bill Amis just needs to get over the hump that some great players experience some time in their careers.

Brandon Adams was disappointing on Friday but MUCH better last night. Looks like he is still trying to find his “hands” right now.

As for point guard, I still think a healthy Hiram Thompson would have the edge over Nitoto and once Thompson does get back to 100 percent, we’ll start seeing that happen.

I hope that they got a chance to work on penetrating the zone defense today as I’m sure Idaho State will employ this from the tip off. I’m not too worried about our chances against a man to man defense. We have the talent to do so. However if we are able to work well against Idaho State’s zone defense, I expect them to ditch it and then go to man in which Flemmings will have a lot of attention paid to him in the form of double teams and it could lead to him getting most of his points from the freethrow line like on Friday night.

That was my first concern about Flemmings. I was worried that a lot of teams would focus a lot on him and he’ll be relegated to getting his points from the line, but I think there were some flashes last night of the rest of the team being able to assist in getting Flemmingns some seperation in order for him to do as much damage as possible.

  153. Kazz November 17, 2008 6:14 pm

Maybe I should just stay in the office until 10 and then just head to Manoa?

Then again I do not have a green shirt on so I will have to change. I should have prepared.

    BTW…. speaking of green shirts.

I wore my green “BOWS BFOR H*S” shirt last night and it attracted the attention of our very own punter Tim Grasso. He thought it was “bada$$”.

    Grasso’s a cool guy.

  154. Jason November 17, 2008 6:29 pm

It is 6 pm, and outside of 15 minutes for lunch, I’ve been staying here in Hamilton Library for …oh, over six hours. I’m going crazy here. 😛

  155. jm2375 November 17, 2008 6:45 pm

  156. mano1 November 17, 2008 6:49 pm

DPK – Heart felt condolences to you and your children. I just said a prayer for you and your family.

Also I’d like to extend my condolences to the Newell & Nishikawa families.

  159. SteveM November 17, 2008 7:04 pm

Jason — no worry. You not turning into Stretch if you spend six hours in a library and only 15 minutes for lunch… 🙂

  160. Kazz November 17, 2008 7:25 pm

One semester I used to spend 6 hours on “lunch” and then 15 minutes in the library.

  161. Ralph November 17, 2008 7:27 pm

See you in a few hours.

  163. MeiLing November 17, 2008 7:35 pm

    DPK,

Sorry to hear about your ‘ohana’s loss. Prayers out for you and your family. Hello to Sweety, too, & (((HUGS))) to all.

Condolences to Pete Newell’s family. I didn’t know he coached at USF; way before my time.

I like the Coach Mack show. Ke’ala Watson is very articulate.

  164. MeiLing November 17, 2008 7:36 pm

    Rob25, IDKWTHM,

If either of you need a ticket tonight, shoot me an email soon. ST left the tickets at the box office for me. Otherwise, they go to anyone I meet there who needs a ticket.

  165. Stephen Tsai November 17, 2008 7:39 pm

Yes, I did leave Mei LIng two tickets.

  166. Kazz November 17, 2008 7:41 pm

    Ralph,

Oh, I got my green shirt ready for tonight! As for trying to take a nap before hand…

I will probably leave the office at 8 and then get home in 20 mins. I will avoid trying to take a nap as I am usually WIDE awake afterwards and then unable to get back to sleep again for a real long time.

I need to be real tired to get some decent sleep and I am usually drained after any UH game. (Moreso if we lose) So I should be ok for tomorrow with the help of my 5 HR Energy Friend… and about two of his buddies as well. Coffee doesn’t do anything to me.

  167. MeiLing November 17, 2008 7:48 pm

Bess was singled out as one of the players who did not do well in Miami’s last game.

    STOCK DOWN

WR Davone Bess – Two drops from the Dolphins rookie receiver, who usually possesses sure hands, was eye-opening. Bess did contribute a season-high three catches for 50 yards, one of which came on that critical fourth-quarter drive that won the game. But Bess could have had an even bigger day if he wasn’t shying away from contact. Slot receivers have to be fearless. They can’t alligator arm passes – even tough ones – just because they hear a safety charging. That’s what Bess did for the first time this season. His punt returns also lacks sizzle. That’s why Ginn got some work as a returner in the twin grouping. I’m starting to wonder how much upside Bess has to his game? I’m thinking it’s time Brandon London gets tried out in those three receiver sets with Camarillo or Ginn moving into the slot.

I loved getting to eat dinner (buffet!) on the deck of the USS Midway today…what perfect weather for that setting. Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell gave a great speech during lunch, I was very impressed with him. MILCOM was very good today…but 13+ hours in a full suit was way too much for me.

The SEC’s allegations about Mark Cuban and insider trading sure look convincing.

Here is the text from the SEC’s “statement of fact” in its allegation of insider trading by Mark Cuban. If the SEC’s reporting of the facts is true and complete, it certainly appears that Mark traded while in possession of material non-public information. According to John Carney, our resident securities attorney, to have committed insider trading, Mark also has to have broken a “duty of confidentiality.” Based on the way the SEC has told the story, it appears that this condition of the charge has been satisfied as well.

Just finished reading Ferd’s 17th column and the only thing I have got to say to the Warriors is do not, I say again do not believe a word that he has written, these two teams coming in this week and next are more dangerous that you can ever imagine, they are like rats that are backed into a corner, they are going to be fighting tooth an nail to beat you, to wipe out your chances to go to a bowl game, they have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Keep your focus on the game in front of you and don’t look past it. You have seen it before BSU/UTAH don’t let it happen again. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS

It seems like as soon bess drops a couple of passes, all hell breaks loose. Its a good thing he caught that pass that help set up the winning field goal.Shows how much trust and faith the QB has in bess.Bess return game is ok.I think he fumble once. Not too shure.Keep up the good work bess.Showem how its done.

  207. Jason November 17, 2008 11:15 pm

There are Jim and Traci Donovan behind the other basket. At least, I thought that was Traci. She disappeared. 😛

    1surfah…

ah.. well.. a local QB with height and talent would always be welcomed. Although the way the fans boo’ed Timmy, I wouldn’t want to see that repeated on any local QB, eh?

  231. jm2375 November 17, 2008 11:56 pm

OK time for bed. Gotta be alert tomorrow. Got 3 hr show and tell by the execs and then, my performance review.

A win’s a win’s a win. Overall it didn’t look pretty but we’ll take it for the first victory of the season.

Chawan_cut, you stay on TV cheering during the OT session!
    Bwahahaha!!!!!

  241. Mike November 18, 2008 2:13 am

Geez, what a day. I didn’t know Luke, but all of my nieces’ friends are great people. As you might have read in today’s story, Luke and his group spent the previous day feeding the homeless in SF.

DPK, all good thoughts to you and your family. Your son must have gone through a lot these last few months, but I’m sure that once the grief subsides he’ll value the time he got to spend with his mother. Not everyone gets to give back to their parents for their love and care.

Condolences to Pete Newell’s family a friends. Had the pleasure of eating lunch with him many years ago after one his Big Man Camps. Great basketball brain and a real gentleman.

    Happier days on the way…

  242. Committed Road Warrior November 18, 2008 2:27 am

I don’t know if it was just me, but it’s funny how the players seemed to be a tad sluggish yet the refs appeared to be in mid-season form. 🙄

Anyways, it’s 5am here. Off to sleep.

Before I sign off, condolences to Luke’s family, the Newells, and DPK and family on their losses. I know these are hard to endure. Just take things one day at a time.

    Whoooooooosh!

  243. Jason November 18, 2008 2:32 am

As if the US does not have enough problems. You can now order Domino’s pizza through your TiVo.

I wonder who or what answers the door?

    To da big, DPK..

I’ve personally known too many people who have succumed?, to cancer, including my own mother whom I nursed until her death, so I don’t envy no body’s grief including yours my friend. Be well and live for the deceased so you can convey to others their goodness, and preserve their memories. KEEP WELL YOUR HEART MY FRIEND.

  251. myki November 18, 2008 6:23 am
