Game day: Boise State

BOISE — “Ferd” and I just took the tour of the Boise State press box. It’s an amazing facility. Each box is nicer than my hotel room. And bigger, too. We visited Jim Donovan and WAC commissioner Karl Benson. They smiled, let us steal cookies that were as big as Frisbees, then sort of hinted that we needed to beat it. Business talk, as they say. Benson, a Boise State graduate, is wearing a blue shirt, but insisted it’s not Boise blue. “Ferd” told him: “Back in Hawai‘i, folks think BCS stands for Benson State University.” Benson did not smile.Maybe it was “Ferd’s” delivery.

* * *

The toughest Warrior might be 5-foot-7 Kelvin Lam. Two weeks ago, he waved a large “H” flag in front of the growling Fresno State crowd. His actions drew jeers from Bulldog fans — and prideful smiles from UH players. Lam and the rest of the UH cheerleaders are on this trip.

* * *

Don’t forget to play The Twins’ contest of guessing the total rushing yards. Winner gets  a green jersey (donated by G-Nalo).

* * *

With age comes … uh … let’s see … what was I talking about again?
Anyway, happy belated anniversary wishes to Stretch and Stretchette. Special thanks to Stretchette for allowing Stretch to make the Boise trip.
Also, since I’ll probably forget, advance happy birthday wishes to yet another brilliant and beautiful former Rough Rider classmate — Debbie Lim — who has been helping others as an RN the past 22 years. As I keep running into over-achieving classmates — take a bow, Debbie, Janet (Yoshida) Bullard, Diane Thomas and Dr. Hingson Chun — I realize that I should apologize for lowering the curve with my poor study habits. You folks make us proud to be Roosevelt grads.

4:30 AM in Boise? ST, no need to ask if you are up late or up early– send Rich and Stretch to their rooms and get a nap… 🙂

  5. al October 17, 2008 12:39 am

have we adjusted to the climate, blue turf, etc?

    are the boys hungry???

i like a team that comes in with a bit of confidence knowing full well that they have prepared themselves well, the coaches have instilled a game plan that they have bought into, and will come out fired up but under control. enough so that it becomes business like in their approach to the game.

  6. al October 17, 2008 12:43 am

one of the greatest moments for a coach is when the opponents try something that you have spent hours on preparing for and teaching your players on. and then BAM!; your team executes exactly like you planned and BOOM! it blows up in their faces.

  7. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2008 12:47 am

I can’t sleep. “Ferd” is borrowing the car, which is in my name.

  8. TChahng [태한민국] October 17, 2008 12:49 am

Howzit BG, is it cooling down in Kadena?

  9. BG October 17, 2008 12:49 am

    al

The adult part of my brain knows that you’re 100% right…Betty has saved my a$$ many a time!!!

Just like she helped out a young NG soldier from Kansas (WHAT!) yesterday. Guy is on the phone to JAL and trying to fix his flight…no way he was going to make the transfer from Haneda to Narita in the time allotted. His problem, the person for JAL has very limited English. Not good. Betty took the phone and fixed everything. I told him that the next time he has to see his girlfriend, he should fly to SeaTac and then catch the Patriot Express to Kadena via Yokota for $27.40 each way.

Time to settle in for the night. Lataz…

  13. BG October 17, 2008 1:01 am

    Hey TChahng!

Rainy today, but still plenty warm. Interesting note…was talking to a front desk clerk at the Shogun Inn and I mentioned that I was interested in seeing the Goju-ryu dojo. She said her father was an instructor at a related style. Now, I’m itching to get back and spend some time here! BTW, I’m also enjoying the local sake and soba.

  14. Ralph October 17, 2008 1:04 am

Actually, we haven’t run into any diehard Boise fans yet. Well, there were a few in the restaurant tonight, but they were cheering for the Red Sox. I don’t think that counts.

  46. TChahng [태한민국] October 17, 2008 4:18 am

    Eh Hawaiianbod,

Funny how Na Ali’i tink alike:

    TChahng[태한민국]:
    October 16th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    Midori7, I like play too!

    Shoots, go run attempts: 24
    TB#1: Pilares
    TB#2: 88 yards
TB#3: First BSU turnover: Fumble, recovered by RJ Kiesel-Kauhane.
TB#4: First UH TD: run, Funaki.

Now you have to turn in your tie breaka #3 and #4!

  47. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2008 4:29 am

TChahng – LOL! if we win, i defer the jersey to my fellow Na Alii.

We pledge to thee our loyalty
To our colors green and white

  48. Committed Road Warrior October 17, 2008 4:59 am

    Game day!!!!!!!!!

  49. Hank October 17, 2008 5:01 am

…i may be wrong but i’m feeling good about our chances because…

    – we have been winning the turnover battles with the defense making plays and the offense protecting the ball.

    – week 3 of the inoke run and shoot should only feel more comfortable for him.

-bsu has not faced a running qb like inoke this season.

-bs has suffered some injuries to their offensive line and our front seven are playing well. i don’t know if bsu can push us around…

-our defensive backs led by ryan “shut down” mouton have improved every week…will boise’s freshman qb have success if their running game is controlled by our front 7?

-adam leonard is back at full speed.

-fale laeli returns and will be in the rotation.

-we didn’t have to show too much against la tech (basically ran the clock out in the second half).

    -the iceman is back…

-byu lost! (“upsets come in bunches”).

-maka and galdeira should help on special teams…

-bsu knows that a loss takes them out of the bcs, and with the game on espn – the pressure is on them.

-we’ve been through florida, oregon state and fresno…the crowd at boise shouldn’t rattle us…

    can’t wait.

    GO WARRIORS!

  50. brew808 October 17, 2008 5:06 am

Dodgers lost. Rays blew a huge lead and lost. BYwho’s lost. BSU???… – not a good week for blue teams! 😀 😯 😆

    Go WARRIORS!!! 😀

  51. NEO October 17, 2008 5:07 am

    Good morning gang… it’s 450..

Midori7-24 rushes for 97 yards and Funaki will be the leading rusher.

Two very special songs for you guys…

    In green Manoa valley
    Our alma mater stands
    where mountain winds and showers
    refresh her fertile lands
    the flag of freedom beckons
    above her shining walls
    to larger truth and service
    our alma mater calls!

    Here’s to our dear Hawaii
here’s to the green and white
    here’s to our alma mater
here’s to the team with fight
    RAH RAH RAH
    here’s to old WARRIORS calling
    here’s to old battles won
    here’s to Hawaii’s VICTORY
    here’s to each valiant son!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

It is Game Day! Warriors in HD!

  61. Garret October 17, 2008 5:47 am

I keep going back to the articles I posted on Monday and the discussion we had…BSU has problems on their OL and I’m sure that Mac and Cal Lee’s D will attack it! Confuse the young OL and things will go well today.

BSU will be even tougher to beat in the future–wasn’t it something like 5 of the 7 or 6 of the 8 OL in their rotation are freshmen or sophomores? Plus, they have a freshman QB. So, they will be even better in the future…but their inexperience can be exploited by the excellent defensive strategists and the veteran players on the Warrior D!

  62. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2008 5:55 am

OK, I went to bed at 5 a.m. and got up at 6 a.m. — because the previous hotel guest left the alarm-clock setting on.

Just saw the pix of Coach and JD from yesterday’s post. I guess Coach finally got his shaka in good shape. He previously kept his thumb and pinky real tight, like he was somewhat shy. But now you can see that he got it spread out like a real brahdah. Guess he’s hangin’ loose now. IMUA WARRIORS!

  81. chawan_cut October 17, 2008 8:19 am

here at the team hotel. gonna take a nap now.

  82. Stretch October 17, 2008 8:23 am

walking around the mall right now trying to work off all the grease from breakfast. if there are any UH fans in Boise who need a hat or beanie, there is a store here selling UH logo stuff, amazing.

ST is being a good family man and buying omiyage stuff. my thinking, why buy stuff from here, carry it back home, if you can buy the same thing in Hawaii?? unless you buy “local” stuff from the area BUT I don’t think anyone wants Boise St crap.

  83. midori7 October 17, 2008 8:25 am

    Morning Tsaikos! GAME DAY!

    Here’s the rules again:

Blog Contest – UH at Boise St.

How many times will UH run the ball?
Tie Breaker #1: Who will be UH’s leading rusher? – yards not carries
Tie Breaker #2: How many yards will UH’s leading rusher have?

    Deadline: Friday, 12pm

    GO WARRIORS!

  84. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 8:26 am

    Morning all…

Less than 6 hours to go. Gotta a lot of work to complete before then so I guess I won’t be online much until after the game. The best of the day to all of you.. wherever you are!

    Go GEEVE ‘EM WARRIORS!

  85. Stretch October 17, 2008 8:26 am

koakane – your boy is here in Boise telling us that you “almost” came but last minute you pulled out. I told him, you was ALL MOUTH and wouldn’t make the trip.

  86. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 8:30 am

Hmm… regarding the graduations rates of UH athletes/football players. How do their graduation rates compare with the rest of the student body? Should the NCAA rules also reflect thost rates as well?

  87. Jason October 17, 2008 8:30 am

Happy belated anniversary to Stretch and Stretchette!

Hawaiianbod: All due respect to Pomai’s suggestion — I would not recommend Soon’s. Smells are free when you drive by on Salt Lake Blvd (and the smells are GOOD), but the food isn’t that great. Then again, I’m Korean, so I’m really picky … 😛

  88. al October 17, 2008 8:37 am

stretch…..you coulda, woulda, shoulda have or had a pre-nuptial agreement prior to being weighted, tied, and anchored down.

    al,

If you win.. give it to the wife.. give it to the kids… use it as a bribe… or frame it and pretend it was your Senior Prom attire when you were slim, trim and “in.”

See? There are still lots of practical uses.

  99. rich2176 October 17, 2008 9:24 am

    GOOD MORNING! GAME DAY!!

Still drinking tea and gonna have some soup later. Maybe pick up some zinc lozenges, too. I’m starting to cough now, but that’s ok because maybe yelling will help. Ain’t no stopping me from enjoying this game. GO WARRIORS! And, happy Friday!

  137. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 11:36 am

    Jay…

Remember that old 99 Ranch supermarket in Mapunapuna? They have that eating plaza with all those local and ethnic food stands… There’s a huge flatscreen tv in the public seating area. They usually show ESPN on that screen. I’m thinking they’ll be showing Warrior Football today! Good cheap eats, free seating.. big screen.

  138. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 11:39 am

    Egads Rob25!!

That imagery is bad enough.. the alternative is …. dang! Now I gotta go wash my brain out with soap! See what you did?

  139. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 11:40 am

  142. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 11:53 am

    Good afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Well, everything has been said and, hopefully, done. The big day is here, the day our Warriors can put themselves back on the national map.

ESPN will have an in depth look at the game on 6pm (EST) Sports Center, don’t know what exact time slot. But I’ll tape it, just in case, while I take a power nap before the game.

Took my anxiety pills (lol) and I’m ready to go.

I hope all us Warrior fans will have lots to celebrate tonight.

  143. al October 17, 2008 11:55 am

  147. al October 17, 2008 11:59 am

fla ted….watching a warrior football game is supposed to be entertaining and fun. one should not experience anxiety. in fact, that is what beer is for to take the edge off.

relax, sit back, and enjoy. win or lose tomorrow you still gonna be a warrior fan and a tsaiko.

  148. Stretch October 17, 2008 11:59 am

  151. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 12:03 pm

    Calvin from Kona…

Who knows? Maybe they got the prediction right and they simply got the wrong team listed with the wrong points! Sort of like what that guy in Nebraska did with the Wahine’s Volleyball results– it happens.

  152. Jack Flash October 17, 2008 12:03 pm

  180. Kazz October 17, 2008 1:47 pm

Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards… Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing. Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions. He who can modify his tactics in relation to his opponent and thereby succeed in winning, may be called a heaven-born captain.

    – Sun Tzu

  181. Kazz October 17, 2008 1:48 pm

Should the enemy strengthen his van, he will weaken his rear; should he strengthen his rear, he will weaken his van; should he strengthen his left, he will weaken his right; should he strengthen his right, he will weaken his left. If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak.

    – Sun Tzu

Kazz has warrior philosophy- Today I am calling on the Force:

“Do or do not… there is no try.”

So the Broncos hate us? Good!
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

“Remember, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.”

“Named must your fear be before banish it you can.”

I’m steaming the laulau, chillin’ the poke, mixing the poi, choppin the roast pork, cracking open the guinness….just about the most perfect Friday I can think of. A win will make it most perfect!!

    Almost sounds like the beginnings of a song (-;

  187. Esme October 17, 2008 1:52 pm

Hey, gangies! How is everyone doing?

I’ve been a bad Tsaiko for being absent so much … *slaps wrist … bad! very bad!* …

But I swear I have an excuse (you can decide if it’s a good one).

Up to now I’ve been hesitating to talk on the blog about it much, but I’ve decided now that since it’s for a good cause, I’ll just post this public service announcement, and hopefully ST won’t hate or smu me for it. *waving madly to ST*

My excuse is I’ve been deep in rehearsals for the …

    Gridiron !!!

The Gridiron is a play put on each year by people in local media — personalities from TV, newspaper, radio, magazines and public relations — as a fundraiser for scholarships and internships sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. The show is a hilariously cockeyed, satirical musical that lampoons local news events from the past year. (I won’t spoil all the surprises, but I WILL say that there is one number in there that takes a pretty good jab at … JJ.) (Oops!)(Oh, and I get to be a UH cheerleader in that one. Haha. As if. Remember: This is ACTING.)

Right off the top of my head, some personalities you might easily recognize who are performing or emceeing in the show include Jody Leong, Keoki Kerr, Justin Cruz, Mahealani Richardson, Ben Guiterrez, Cathy Foy, Howard Dicus, Gina Mangieri, Minna Sugimoto, Paul Drewes and others.

The reason I finally decided to talk a little bit about this project is … it IS a good cause — the money supports the next generation of journalists (the new wave of Stephens — yay!) (And, uh, Esmes … yikes).

The other reason is that we’ve got one show that still has a lot of tickets left, so I hope if you’ve got time, you can swing by and support the program. I promise you will laugh and laugh and laugh!

    • The schedule:

8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 (mostly sold out; a few tickets left)
3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 (ample tickets left)
8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 (mostly sold out; a few tickets left)
    Diamond Head Theatre

    “Super good tickets” – $65
    “Really good tickets” – $45

(If you’ve been in DHT before, you know the house is actually small enough that almost any seat is a good one.)

Also, on Thursday, Oct. 23, there is a 7 p.m. “preview” showing that is sort of like a glorified dress rehearsal/dry run, where the public is invited. Tickets are at the door only on a first-come, first-served basis for $25 apiece. (Warning: People usually start lining up from 6 p.m. for preview night, since it’s a cheaper night, so come early.)

Regular ticket sales are being handled by Honolulu Box Office, 550-8457. Email at info@honoluluboxoffice.com.

I hope at least some Tsaikos can come. As I said, I promise you will laugh your behind off. Also, you will get to see me in some really humiliating costumes. And it’s all for a good cause.

OK, I’m out! E-mail me at enii at honoluluadvertiser .com if you’ve got questions.

    Tsaiko Nation! Arrrooooo!

(OK, I had too much coffee today.)

  188. Kazz October 17, 2008 1:53 pm

If asked how to cope with a great host of the enemy in orderly array and on the point of marching to the attack, I should say: “Begin by seizing something which your opponent holds dear; then he will be amenable to your will.” Rapidity is the essence of war: take advantage of the enemy’s unreadiness, make your way by unexpected routes, and attack unguarded spots.

Eh Curveball – Zippys chili sounds good too. You know I was thinking about all the local boys playing football in Idaho who would love some Zippy’s Chili right now.

I’m so glad my son’s playing for the Warriors and I know he is too. There are some things you just can’t get anywhere else in the world.

  194. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 1:59 pm

  201. bb October 17, 2008 2:30 pm

    thank you madeinhawaii!

  202. Chris October 17, 2008 2:31 pm

    So far, so good!

  203. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:32 pm

Cold, calm, methodical offense plus stifling, opportunistic defense sounds like a very good recipe. Let’s hope Hawaii can stay this consistent all game.

  204. Chris October 17, 2008 2:32 pm

We look pretty good so far, usually we melt down in the first few minutes at Boise. Not too bad.

  205. TChahng [태한민국] October 17, 2008 2:34 pm

ESPN Game Plan International isn’t streaming either.

  206. Chris October 17, 2008 2:35 pm

    should’ve been play action

  207. curveball October 17, 2008 2:36 pm

Sorry, but you got to put the points up …..this early..wrong call

  208. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:37 pm

4th and 1…and…option pitch. Hmm. Why not an under center run or QB sneak or something?

I’ll chalk this up to keeping Boise State on its toes, which IMHO should work as long as Hawaii can keep Boise from scoring this drive.

  209. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 2:37 pm

    hmmm…no FG? interesting

  210. Chris October 17, 2008 2:38 pm

if you’d like, I can describe what’s happening. we just went for it on 4th and 1 at the Boise 15, option to pilares, stopped way short.

  211. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:38 pm

Agreed curveball. If Boise does 3 or better this drive, that may come back to hurt Hawaii. And hey, Kekaula agrees with us!

  212. Ralph October 17, 2008 2:38 pm

pilares slowed down to read defense, he just got to run to the edge and just hele on and steinhoff missed his block forcing funaki to pitch earlier than he needed to

  213. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:39 pm

To me, if you go for it, you gotta at least put in a play that doesn’t start off the RB with a several-yard disadvantage.

  214. Chris October 17, 2008 2:40 pm

with the issues we’ve had with our kicking game, i don’t necessarily disagree with the call to go for it, I just don’t like the play call.

  215. Chris October 17, 2008 2:41 pm

Man, we’re drilling their QB – this bodes well for us.

  216. Chris October 17, 2008 2:42 pm

Our D has been so fiery the last 3-4 games. I love it.

  217. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:43 pm

Boise State will likely score. Game on, Hawaii. This is battle. Will you respond?

  218. Chris October 17, 2008 2:43 pm

good play call on the screen. I still love the intensity of the D, the playcalling has been excellent on defense so far.

  219. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:43 pm

Boise rolling…..blitz picked up and big play…..

  220. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:44 pm

D is doing their job, but gotta stay home on the assignments

  221. Chris October 17, 2008 2:45 pm

    good drive for our D.

  222. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:45 pm

Watson is going off….like kekaula said, he’s having a great season in this 1st quarter……

  223. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:45 pm

field goal, red zone D, give up 3 but not he TD

  224. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:46 pm

We held ’em to 3, not too bad. Short of compensating TDs by the offense, the D will eventually have to start going for turnovers.

  225. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:46 pm

    1st quarter almost over…we can handle 3-0

  226. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 2:47 pm

I’m meeting some lurkers on the stream

  227. Chris October 17, 2008 2:47 pm

I’m way more confident now than when the game started. We might actually pull this off. Our offense isn’t taking any risks, we’re going to have to go down field at some point.

  228. Chris October 17, 2008 2:48 pm

I can’t help but thinking that Leon Wright-Jackson would be hitting the hole a lot faster.

  229. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:48 pm

we got more run than shoot…..if we can’t keep the D honest, our offense is going to have a long day

  230. Bulla October 17, 2008 2:49 pm

we need a bruising FB to keep the middle honest….or they’ll collapse on us…keep fighting, GO WARRIORS

  231. Ralph October 17, 2008 2:51 pm

we need a sustained drive, put some points on the board while giving the D some rest

  232. Ralph October 17, 2008 2:51 pm

I guess the twins mojo works when they are together, more mana….

  233. Chris October 17, 2008 2:51 pm

The story of that first half:

Hawaii is trying to slow down the game, taking their time. Boise is trying to speed it up with numerous substitutions, and a modified hurry-up offense. So far, Hawaii’s D has handled the chaos pretty well. If we can avoid giving up big plays, we’ll be in this one.

Hawaii’s D is hitting Boise’s playmakers hard, this should pay dividends later in the game.

  234. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 2:52 pm

We need points on this drive. They made two gutsy plays on the last drive, failed on the last, but this time let’s get some points. Get the crowd out of the game..

  235. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:53 pm

Get with the program, Mr. Washington!

  236. Chris October 17, 2008 2:53 pm

That play showed Boise’s DBs are susceptible to a pump fake.

    Man…Funaki hasn’t learned…get rid of the ball!

  237. Ralph October 17, 2008 2:54 pm

libre and kia missed their blocks, funaki sandwich not to pretty

  238. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:55 pm

Oh great…Grasso makes a beautiful 24-yard punt. Special teams breakdown redux?

  239. Chris October 17, 2008 2:55 pm

    Mouton, nice tackle.

  240. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 2:56 pm

Tell the Tsai-kos we can hear Hawaii fans cheering!

  241. Chris October 17, 2008 2:56 pm

Elimimian got destroyed on that play.

  242. BowsForever October 17, 2008 2:56 pm

Need a TD to wake the team up? Well, one’s coming your way, Hawaii!

  243. Chris October 17, 2008 2:57 pm

Our corners are playing very well.

  244. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 2:58 pm

    Hope Funaki’s okay.

Warriors need to make a stop here.

  245. Chris October 17, 2008 2:59 pm

what the hell was that play?

  246. Chris October 17, 2008 3:00 pm

Okay..it’s third and goal from the 3.5 yard line…let’s run a QB sneak!

  247. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:01 pm

    Watson down.. NOT good!

  248. wafan October 17, 2008 3:01 pm

    Dang. Watson is down?

  249. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:02 pm

Could be a long night for the team. Things aren’t desperate yet, but there’s little room for error when you play a game like this! Minus Keala Watson…that’s bad news.

  250. 99club October 17, 2008 3:02 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Big stop coming up. Or are they going for the field goal?

  251. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:03 pm

    Meatoga time to step up

  252. Chris October 17, 2008 3:03 pm

    That was a shame.

  253. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:04 pm

number 24 db to slow to read the play,

  254. Chris October 17, 2008 3:05 pm

We’re playing well, they’re just better physically. We’re going to need a big play out of our D or Special teams like with the Fresno game.

  255. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:05 pm

Hey home come the commercials stream so well but not the game on justin.tv ?

  256. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:07 pm

MIH the game is on espn, just watch it locally on tv

  257. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:07 pm

I’m confident Mac will make the necessary adjustments after halftime to shut down Boise, but our Offense need to make an impact soon! C’mon WARRIORS!

  258. rayboyjr October 17, 2008 3:08 pm

    Go Warriors!

  259. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:09 pm

we need a north south running back, no time to pause at the line to read the defense

  260. Chris October 17, 2008 3:09 pm

Ticky-tack? He practically groped him. If he did that on the street that would be 5-10.

  261. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:09 pm

Ralph.. watching on my laptop outside while I’m working…

  262. Chris October 17, 2008 3:10 pm

    NICE.

  263. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 3:10 pm

    Pilares and Watson are hurt…sheesh

    Warriors gotta step up!

  264. Chris October 17, 2008 3:10 pm

    Geez Funaki…

  265. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:11 pm

    steinhoff misses another block

  266. curveball October 17, 2008 3:12 pm

Our oline tackles are getting killed

  267. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 3:13 pm

ok…I’m not going to watch for a few minutes and see if that HELPS…Bwahahaha!

  268. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:15 pm

ESPN stats show we are very competitive except in the score which is most important…we got to make things happen on D and special teams…

  269. Chris October 17, 2008 3:16 pm

    YESSSSSSSS

  270. Chris October 17, 2008 3:16 pm

    Defense Big Play #1

  271. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:16 pm

    Aloha kakou!
Whew, rough going so far — flashes of success, but not good enough yet.
Funaki isn’t getting the protection he needs. LWJ lets his man knock down a pass, then Steinhoff whiffs on a block. C’mon guys!! Defense needs to gail out the Offense again!
    TURNOVER!! THEY DID IT!!
Okay, we need to take advantage and SCORE!!

  272. Chris October 17, 2008 3:17 pm

    WHATTTTT

  273. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:17 pm

big hit by dowling, fumble recovery…..lane misses a ball in his hands

  274. Chris October 17, 2008 3:17 pm

They’ve been setting up the deep ball all game..crud

  275. Chris October 17, 2008 3:17 pm

    Defensive offsides

  276. Chris October 17, 2008 3:18 pm

The first quarter conservative playcalling is paying dividends.

  277. Bulla October 17, 2008 3:19 pm

Our O tackles are missing blocks left and right.

Flags on the play, offsides D, oh yeah. GO WARRIORS

  278. Chris October 17, 2008 3:19 pm

Nice catch. Outside of that drop by Lane, the receivers have been playing perfectly.

  279. Chris October 17, 2008 3:20 pm

Sweet! Now…we need to step up on our kick coverage.

  280. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:20 pm

    TOUCHDOWN LIBRE!! AW-RYTE!!!

  281. TChahng [태한민국] October 17, 2008 3:21 pm

7 pts off a fumble. all is good in warrior country.

  282. Bulla October 17, 2008 3:21 pm

    WR GOTTA CATCH THE BALL

  283. Chris October 17, 2008 3:22 pm

    good good

  284. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:23 pm

    OH MY! TWO turnovers!

  285. Chris October 17, 2008 3:23 pm

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, Boise is looking like 2004 Hawaii!

  286. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:23 pm

    BSU FUMBLE!!! HAWAI’I BALL!!!

  287. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:23 pm

    YEEEEHAAAAW!!!!

  289. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:24 pm

Well, go for the TD, or move it up 5 yards to tie up the game.

  290. addahknowjoe October 17, 2008 3:24 pm

After fumble just saw ChawanCut on TV!

  291. Bulla October 17, 2008 3:24 pm

    go warriors…..c’mon funaki….let’s go….execute

  292. Chris October 17, 2008 3:25 pm

    damn.

  293. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:25 pm

second penalty on steinhoff plus 2 sacks given up….no other lineman available

  294. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:25 pm

Or…a penalty! That works too. Not exactly.

  295. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:27 pm

Better yet…throw to where there aren’t any Hawaii receivers!

  296. Chris October 17, 2008 3:27 pm

It would’ve been a 50-yard FG attempt, just think of it as an awesome punt.

  297. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:27 pm

    arghh… misread.. interception! C’mon Warriors… get on the same page… !!!

    Okay.. Defense… DEFENSE!!!

  298. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:29 pm

    C’mon Hawaii.. HIT em HARD!

Gotta slow em down.. gotta get Inoke back in for retribution…

  299. Bulla October 17, 2008 3:29 pm

    Defense wins games….

    But

    every game?

  300. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:30 pm

    LizKauai…

    You was Peeking, huh?

  301. Chris October 17, 2008 3:30 pm

    thank god

  302. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:30 pm

trick play would have worked, our #24 was late getting over to the right side

  303. BowsForever October 17, 2008 3:31 pm

The flea-flicker. AGAIN. Hawaii dodged a bullet here.

  304. Chris October 17, 2008 3:31 pm

Boise is playing like they’re the road team.

  305. not far away anymore October 17, 2008 3:33 pm

We get the ball back to start the 2nd half. If we can score here it will be huge!!!

  306. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:34 pm

AARRRRRGGGHHH!! Washington’s just got to take off on those punt returns, never mind dancing around!!

  307. Chris October 17, 2008 3:35 pm

Keep the ball on the ground, don’t do anything stupid.

  308. Kazz October 17, 2008 3:37 pm

    EAT CLOCK… EAT CLOCK…

  309. J-Dog October 17, 2008 3:37 pm

to be honest, i kinda expected more from Mike Wash this season returning punts. Although maybe the blocking is not as good up front either.

  310. 99club October 17, 2008 3:39 pm

    Boise up 10-7 halftime.

  311. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:41 pm

Aw-ryte, 10-7 Halftime. Pretty well played by the Warriors.
Okay, time to relax for awhile.

  312. 99club October 17, 2008 3:42 pm

All that orange in the stands tonight…they’ll also wear it while hunting over the weekend and then while picking up trash during the week. 🙂

  313. HiFlyer October 17, 2008 3:43 pm

Ok, only down by 3 at the half.

Boises alignment for the punt looked like they had three or four guys on the left side.

  314. curveball October 17, 2008 3:44 pm

    Liz..we will let you know when you can come out….(-;

  315. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:44 pm

washington has 2 punt returns for -6 yds…to much dancing, go north south michael..

If we know that our own men are in a condition to attack, but are unaware that the enemy is not open to attack, we have gone only HALFWAY towards victory. If we know that the enemy is open to attack, but are unaware that our own men are not in a condition to attack, we have gone only HALFWAY towards victory. If we know that the enemy is open to attack, and also know that our men are in a condition to attack, but are unaware that the nature of the ground makes fighting impracticable, we have still gone only HALFWAY towards victory.

I like how Inoke takes the sack rather than throwing a forced/bad pass. Smart, conservative.

  318. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:45 pm

we have only 3 penalties to bsu 2….I believe Steinhoff has two of them for us..

  319. Ralph October 17, 2008 3:47 pm

i forgot to watch our right guard, I think pepa should be there for ginlack, the interior o line doing well, our tackles esp steinhoff got to protect funaki better than they have been doing

  320. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 3:48 pm

Wow this is a game of defense… Hawaii can move the ball.. Pilares is injured but, we can still move the ball… receivers gotta hang on to that ball… and gotta avoid those bad reads.. .but Hawaii has to go to the air more to give Libre and Wright-Jackson better run opportunities.

  321. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2008 3:48 pm

So far, so good. Nuff said.

  322. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 3:50 pm

The offense not quite in sync yet, but are showing flashes.

If somebody would have offered me 7-10 at the half yesterday, I would’ve taken it in a heart beat. We could be ahead 17-10.

This is anybodies game, come out battling, brave Warriors, bust them Broncs.

  323. Bulla October 17, 2008 3:51 pm

    Pilares out? not good

    Steinhoff in? not good

    steinoff getting juked bad.

inoke looks more comfortable. not sure why pilares is out. lane will have a tough time sleeping tonight.

  329. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 3:57 pm

In a game this close at the half, the team that makes the best halftime adjustments usually wins. That means the onus is on the coaches — it’s your game to win!

Okay, Defense — bail us out again!!

  346. Ralph October 17, 2008 4:09 pm

  373. not far away anymore October 17, 2008 4:46 pm

The offense lost the San Jose game and now this one. I don’t care if people get mad at me, but I’m beginning to doubt if our coaches really know how to develop QB’s and if they are, now would be a good time for some playing time, it can’t get any worse.

Our defense and ST is the reason we won 3 games. Damned, it’s hard to win without an offense. Come on, Warriors, keep on fighting.

  385. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 5:00 pm

Our O-line is really porous. Can’t have a run-n-shoot with a porous O-line. I thought our blocking was better than this. Hoo boy… Funaki is taking beating. It ain’t pretty.

  386. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 5:01 pm

Hey ! All of a sudden my fonts are really tiny!
    What happened?

  387. jayz October 17, 2008 5:02 pm

I hate to say it, but I think a lot of the hits Funaki is taking are self-inflicted. He has to get rid of the ball a lot quicker. That look and hesitation before he releases just gives the dbs a chance to jump the route and the rushers to get to the QB. Now, they are just teeing off on him because they know he has to pass. It’s getting ugly now.

  393. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 5:06 pm

I don’t like the way the whole offense seems to have given up, they’re crumbling like a week old cake, Look at the defense, they’re fighting their guts out, that’s all I want to see. We’re only three scores down and the offense is not fighting. That’s what bugs me, not the score.

Put in a back-up and at least TRY to win, help the defense out a little.

  395. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 5:06 pm

I have a feeling the ESPN commentators have a valid point — Inoke has taken a beating, and that, with credit due to Boise’s defense, may be the cause for his poor play in the 2nd half. His bod’s got to be aching. Give him the rest of the night off already. Give another QB some game time.

  396. Just Saying October 17, 2008 5:08 pm

Funaki running around all willy nilly is just a sign that we cannot even run our base passing offense.

  397. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 5:10 pm

After Funaki took that big hit in the second quarter and came up holding his hips, his play started getting really irratic.

  398. 99club October 17, 2008 5:10 pm

I’m thinking Utah’s the BCS buster this season, not Boise. They still have to play BYU and TCU but both those games are at home. And I’ve got a feeling that SJSU will be tough next week for Boise.

Unreal stat I saw about TCU though was that they were only giving up an average of .8 yds per rush on D before last night’s beat down of BYU.

  399. J-Dog October 17, 2008 5:12 pm

Keep supporting the team. Let’s get to that bowl game. If we do, i’d say it was a pretty good 1st season for coach mack.

Thats 10 seconds left to show something. So no.

    Thanks for playing.

P.S. BSU did not make the spread yet, so I’m just asking how much money do you stand to win or lose at this point?

  401. KRISK October 17, 2008 5:14 pm

Brandyn Thompson is going to name the apple tree in his yard FUNAKI.

So he can pick him in the off season as well.

And Kazz, if you believed in HCW just as much there would still be pro wrestling in Hawaii.

  402. jayz October 17, 2008 5:16 pm

Okay, sit Funaki down already. He’s had enough beating. Put in Alexander if we get the ball back.

  403. 99club October 17, 2008 5:18 pm

Just checked…spread was 24. I’m sure there are some Boise backers that are cursing them running the ball and now punting. 🙂

  404. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 5:22 pm

    Kazz,
I understand where you’re coming from. There’s a difference between giving up on the game and giving up on the team. I will NEVER give up on the team, but this game is a goner. We need to get what we can out of it, and that means give Alexander and some of the other backups some valuable game experience. It will pay off in the future, and let Funaki get a hard-earned rest.

  405. XxFaithxX October 17, 2008 5:24 pm

Man…..saddened that we are losing the way we are…i’m not on Inokes jock, but I feel that it does not fall on him fully. The O-Line needs help…BIG TIME. After the 1st half I thought that we had a chance..but the O could not do anything. IDK if it is the play calling and the QB we have in at the time, but too much runs I thought and we did run, we tried to outside and that was not working. IF has occasions where he could run, but decided to stay in the pocket to try and pass…don’t know if that if the plan (Maturation progress) of making IF run more of a R&S offense, but he should have the green light to just take off. Whats the deal with LWJ?? He cant even get off the LOS fast. If they are going to stay with IF, we should do the Pistol formation. Easier to run from that and the RBs have a more of a running start. With Pilares out, where was Rego?? Well, its the final minutes..logging off and poping another beer…/sigh….

  406. Bulla October 17, 2008 5:25 pm

sadly enough, Coach Mac has to evaluate where they are as a team with a QB position that has yet to be filled.

Funaki is a great kid, humble, team player and all the things that make you proud. Hawaii has a run and shoot offense, throwing for 180 yds in the air with 5 INT’s and negative yardage running does not qualify as a run and shoot…..IMHO

i don’t have the answers, i am not the coach, just a fan that keeps hoping only for the best for our Warriors and their coaches.

the season is not over, but we have to regroup and get some level of consistency out there!!!!

    IMUA WARRIORS

  410. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 5:28 pm

Game over…. our Warriors put up a good fight… Boise was one step ahead. Next season.. our house! We’ll be ready!

Funaki… no sweat.. still get next season!!

  411. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 5:32 pm

Our O-line needs to get a little stronger. They can hold their own against most defenders but against Boise, Florida, Georgia they look porous. No matter how good our QB might be, without the time they need to perform, you can’t get a full performance from them.

Let’s hope they can all heal before the next game, mentally, spiritually, and physically. They put up a good fight.. kept Boise from making the spread and kept fighting till the end. Makes me proud.

  412. curveball October 17, 2008 5:33 pm

For me the bottom line….Our oline is bad..our d pass coverage is way inconsistent….our QB situation is pitiful…sorry..I need a shot of CR

  413. jayz October 17, 2008 5:34 pm

Alexander has a strong arm. Funaki will be licking his wounds. I feel for him, he tried his best, he’ll get better. I don’t know if I like this offensive scheme. Looks like we need more than one running QB if we continue this run, run, shoot offense. I like some of the catches by our receivers. I don’t remember seeing any crossing patterns by the receivers. The only positive is Hawaii made the spread.

  414. chee October 17, 2008 5:35 pm

I cannot believe the amount of INTs. Rolo seems like he’s not talking to Funaki about correcting his reads. Last INT was into triple coverage, you’re telling me that nobody else was open?

But good luck to Boise, hope they can make the BCS dream come true again.

  415. Unkanesson October 17, 2008 5:37 pm

Yes, their defense bested our offense.
Our special teams did nothing special.
Our defense did all they could to keep us in the game, but couldn’t keep up with our offense in the turnover department.
And, going back to my earlier comment, the Boise coaches made better halftime adjustments than ours did.
    Sigh…okay, clear.
Next up: Nevada at Aloha Stadium.
GO WARRIORS!! BACK ON THE WINNING TRACK!! STILL CAN GET TO THE HAWAI’I BOWL!!

On the plus side, Salas sealed his spot as the new possession receiver. I thought he had a pretty good game. The ESPN announcers were pretty impressed as well.

Not sure why Mouton wasn’t back returning kicks for most of the second half. I hope he isn’t hurt. He is a big time player and we need him if we are going to make a bowl game.

  423. Ralph October 17, 2008 5:49 pm

liz you should have stayed in the bathroom, next week we’re feeding you a box of prunes and we’ll see if you’re right

  424. Kazz October 17, 2008 5:50 pm

    Question:

Since I didn’t get to see the game, were Funaki’s picks from throws he attempted in the pocket or off the bootleg or off the run?

  425. Pomai October 17, 2008 5:50 pm

Got to watch the game on espn, and now I’ve got a mean headache from trying to watch the game on that damm blue turf. They need to get rid of that rug.

  426. Nalani October 17, 2008 5:51 pm

Kazz – I believe they were from the pocket

I have to say on behalf of the OL that some sacks were earned by BSU, but on a few, we held the ball way too long

  427. Pomai October 17, 2008 5:54 pm

I would say if I had to pick the biggest thing that cost us the game it would be the play of the O-line, sorry they just didn’t git the job done, not for run blocking nor for pass blocking.

  428. bighilofan2 October 17, 2008 5:55 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

Well, I gotta say that I was yellin like heck in the first half, and then was all muted most of the second half, especially when the picks started piling up, and especially when I could see Inoke looking the ball down the field. ouch.

he’s a great great person. I’m glad he’s on the team and is a team leader.

but Coach Rolo, you gotta bite the bullet sooner, imho. The team mission is to win! Thats the mission for the team. You gotta look at your players as pieces of the team. when the QB is getting hit that many times, and he starts getting INT that many times, you could have saved him a INT…

just saying…… cuz I don’t qualify as a coach. But I would like to end my statement on a very positive note.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  429. Kazz October 17, 2008 5:55 pm

    Salas is indeed awesome.

Throughout the spring and fall practices he stood out as one of, if not, the most consistent receiver.

Just to think, he’s only a sophomore too!

  430. Kazz October 17, 2008 5:57 pm

    Nalani,

If that is the case, would be safe to say that BSU was able to cut off the bootleg/option pass plays or did we deviate from the new plan of the modified R&S?

  431. Pomai October 17, 2008 5:57 pm

Nalani you are also right BSU out hustled our O-line quite a few times, the problem is that I know our boys are better than what they showed tonight.

  432. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 5:59 pm

Hey Ralph- it’s the AWAY games, not the HOME games that I may be jinxing… prune diet at a T-Gate? yikes! 😆

  433. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 6:00 pm

Ahem, even though I did not watch MOST of the game, gotta credit the smurfs on the turf for getting it done, eh? Still wanna see a WAC team crack that BCS barrier!!!

  434. curveball October 17, 2008 6:00 pm

As a tackle you cant just back up a few steps hit the rusher and let him go..you have to back up hit him.. and then stay with him to the outside..we are hitting them and then releasing.. this is basic football..I am not sure why our tackles do not stay with their blocks..Pride. advise

  435. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 6:02 pm

Also- I think Inoke got hurt during that first sandwich- even though he sucked it up and acted all brave. While the announcers were talking about his hip, it could be he got his bell rung – which would explain the ensuing INTs… yes??? maybe???

  436. Pomai October 17, 2008 6:03 pm

I think they should have pulled Funaki right after he took the hit on his hip, it seemed his play kind of went down after that hit, but you have to give it to him he is one heck of a player with a lot of heart.

  437. cavewarrior October 17, 2008 6:03 pm

Another tough loss. We had opportunities to make the handful of plays that result in scores. It was frustrating that Inoke didn’t have the arm strength to throw over the receivers shoulders on the post patterns 30-40 yds down the field. He under-threw and got intercepted. His zip on the shorter passes was good in the first half, but got weaker in the second half. The O-line also needs to improve, locking out pressure from a 4-man rush! I think UH’s future opponents will follow Boise’s defensive scheme – contain the running game and Inoke’s running, and make UH throw. I hope we can make big improvements in these areas this week!

    GO Warriors!!!

  438. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 6:03 pm

And doggone, before the negative yards, I called him pretty close in rushing!

  439. curveball October 17, 2008 6:04 pm

  440. not far away anymore October 17, 2008 6:06 pm

The stats for midori7’s contest (from ESPN):
How many times will UH run the ball? 35
Tie Breaker #1: Who will be UH’s leading rusher? Libre
Tie Breaker #2: How many yards will UH’s leading rusher have? 27

  441. Kazz October 17, 2008 6:08 pm

Well, another hard loss in the books, BUT we must remember that no matter how bad we fans, parents of players, boosters, and supporters feel, NOTHING compares to what our team must be feeling.

They are our team and they are WARRIORS that take pride in what they do. They are the BIGGEST critics of themselves right now and that’s how it has always been.

Let’s give them an awesome reception back at Aloha Stadium in a week against a very good Nevada team.

AGAIN… THIS IS A BATTLE!!! WE MUST RESPOND!!!

  444. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 6:15 pm

I hope a lot of people betting on the spread lost money tonight.

Our defense played their guts out and ST played Boise about even, like I’ve set before, we are two thirds a great team now, but looking at it realistically and after the anguish has subsided somewhat, for the life of me, I can’t figure out what the hell kind of offense we’re running. The system? seems to be all over the place, everything appears to work a little and then it sputters.

What the heck happened to our quick slants and crossing patterns? They have disappeared. You can’t run 60 yard patterns, if you can only throw fifty, that’s a sure interception. Seven games into the season and I have not seen a recognizable “system” of any kind. What’s up with that?

We have talent on offense, but what are we doing?

Alexander in for 3 1/2 minutes? What good is that? Should have been a quarter. He has a cannon and I didn’t know he actually can run, but still a little slow in his release.

We are not really a running team, not without a true power back and we are not a throwing team, so what are we? This can still be a great season, but we have to get that offense cranking somehow.

Where do we go from here? Any ideas from other armchair coaches?

Sorry for the rambling, but I feel much better now. On to the next game.

  445. Postmanke October 17, 2008 6:18 pm

I liked the play calling early in the game, it had the look and feel of a JJ offense. It seems when we fall behind, Ron Lee seems lose his concentration and pushes the issue a little bit. There is a reason why JJ would run a draw after an incomplete first down pass. …to avoid 3rd and longs. Why are we not paying attention to our second down plays? we should not be going 15 yard down field on second and long.. This is where Ron Lee is putting too much pressure on Funaki. I think he can improve on his play calling when we are behind and not be so impatient. This would put lots of pressure off of everyone.

  446. LizKauai [Believer] October 17, 2008 6:22 pm

Before I leave for home- did anyone else wonder why we didn’t put the IceMan out there to score on that first drive? That was a long way to march to have no points to show for it.

at least boise fans are nice.
    can’t win with 5 ints.
boise was worried in the first half though when we were playing smart and consistant.
ronnie was leading the cheers for “another Hawaii first down!” again.
    ok cya for now.

  453. maverick October 17, 2008 6:38 pm

    On a good note:
Penalties are way down. Only 30 yds.

Posistives for next week against Nevada will get us a win.

Hawaii had chance into halftime, but playing Boise is ALWAYS a 4 quarter game.

  454. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 6:40 pm

So, what have we learned from today’s game?
    Anybody?

We have a first class defense.
Our special teams were okay against the very formidable Boise special teams.

    Our Offense?

Like FloridaTed said…we are NOT a running/rushing Offense, yet our passing game hasn’t improved all that much, if any. 5 interceptions is 5 too many, 4 too generous, 3 way over the limit. I really like Inoke, but if they intend to keep him as the starter, they need to make him practice his passes and practice concealing his intention. Just as they need to make the other quarterbacks practice scrambling under this new offense, they need Inoke to really practice his passing game. Do our receivers still practice catching 100 balls from the throwing machine every day?

Who or what is missing in our O-line insofar as giving the quarterback better protection? Other teams will watch these tapes and attack our Offense the same way. Our Warriors need to identify the weaknesses and rectify them as soon as possible.

The team played their hearts out. Funaki looked lost out there from about the middle of the 3rd quarter. Pilares got hurt early. Keala Watson going down made me swallow my gum. And I wasn’t chewing any. Still looking for my teeth.

I don’t enjoy watching our Warriors get beat. They have worked hard and I wish things had turned our differently today. We need to find answers so that they can all feel like winners day in and day out.

They fought the good fight… they need to come home, lick their wounds and come out hungrier next week.

  455. BG October 17, 2008 6:55 pm

NOW is the time the team really needs home town support…everything’s easy when the wins are coming, but the real bonding and character building comes when the challenges are upon us. I know this is a repeat of a repeat…but, I needed to hear myself say it again.

The Warriors fought hard against a very good team. Now, work on getting better next week. IMUA

  456. al October 17, 2008 6:56 pm

    easy, easy, easy….
hey, lets be easy on our team. the reality is that we need to realize that this year’s team is not reloading.

    it is rebuilding.

the harsh truth of the matter is that we are not as talented as we were the past two years. in fact, it will be a long time coming for us to witness those teams of the two years past.

that is reality folks. so, please don’t jump on the players or coaches. trust me, they are trying as hard as they can. have you ever been in situation albeit at work, at the playground, or on a team where someone is just physically superior??? i am sure we all have. put yourself in their shoes. hey you were there before, too.

i keep saying, we have not had great recruiting the past 3-4 years and it shows. oh we have some talented guys now. but, we lack depth.

the good news is it will get better. if we keep recruiting like we are this year, it will happen in two-three years. meanwhile, if you truly are a warrior fan, they don’t be a fair weathered fan, be a fan for life.

you all got to make a commitment too!

    …nuff said!

    Maverick,

Playing Nevada is no sure win. They have a QB that is hard to stop and he is the real deal as a running QB with an arm. We have a real solid chance of losing this game if Ron Lee continues to have his way on offense.

  460. pissed October 17, 2008 7:04 pm

  461. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2008 7:13 pm

Tough loss. That’s why Boise is unbeaten. They have a great defense and their offense has a lot of ways to beat you.

We’ll have to do better next game.

    Nuff said.

  462. el October 17, 2008 7:15 pm

Where’s Graunke? it is obvious that Funaki is a terrible passer. We should have yanked him after 2 ints. Why does everybody get it except the coaches. Funaki is 3rd and short qb, and that is all he is

  463. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2008 7:20 pm

    hello tsaikos,

disappointing but not surprising loss. i am no expert but it really seems like our offense (possibly) QB have no consistency. the O-line…whats up with the outside? It looked like the Sugar Bowl allll over again =(.

ok, was it just me or did Funaki pass into triple and sometimes QUADRUPLE coverage sometimes?….Now unless Boise is playing with 20 men on the field, shouldnt the other 2 or 3 receivers been somewhat open somewhere?/???????????? that was pretty frustrating. i noticed that the interceptions he threw didnt require Boise to make a play on….kinda fell into their hands….=(

i dont want to second guess any coach or player…but Bobby Curran said that he is very sure that Graunke will not see primetime this season…..PLEASE TELL ME WHY THE HE11 this is ok? I will repeat like i have been repeating all the past 2 weeks….something is fishy with the QB situation and with Graunke that we are not being told. Maybe we as fans are not privy but if so I wish someone wud just say so.

GO Warriors. still go your back!

  464. Postmanke October 17, 2008 7:24 pm

I liked the no huddle – hurry up offense Boise played. There seems to be a trend in this style of offense that I wish we would adopt. It would promote rhythm on offense, unity and players will play harder with a sense of urgency. All this equals to more first downs which will enable us to get more touchdowns. We need to do something to improve on our 3rd down conversions. Ron Lee stop being silly!

  465. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2008 7:26 pm

ok i dont want to sound like a coach from the bedroom…BUT

Mr. Ron Lee, please be a little creative, run some reverses, use LWJ with Farmer in a power-I, play actions and the like.

Are we in desperate times? if so, well you know the saying…..

  466. what? October 17, 2008 7:33 pm

Okay, Is everyone ready to realize that Funaki is not a D1 quarter back?
He can’t throw. How many pics does he have now?
Yes he managed to win the last two games for us, but that was more a factor of the D getting a lot of picks than Funaki winning the game.
Even in those two games, there were 3-4 passes that were really close to being picked off.
He can’t lead our offense down the field on a scoring drive.
Yes, he is a great runner and does great when the play breaks down, but do you want your QB to be at his best when things are going bad?
How often will things actually turn out positive if you follow that pattern.
We need some one who can play in the system that our whole team was built for. We we want to go back to the option, that is fine, but we have to recruit and build and option team.
We don’t have an option team.
We have or should I say, had a run and shoot team.
As far as I can tell, everyone on the team is made for the run and shoot… except for Funaki. He was made for and played great in a Kahuku like option offense.
I’m sorry but Funaki is the wrong guy for this offense.
I am also sorry to see that our coaches have no vision. The best part of having JJ here was that he had a vision, an offense, he knew that it would work, he believed in it, he knew how to make it work.
Our coaches now have no vision, no offense, no idea what they are doing. You can tell because even though they say they are still running the “run and shoot,” it is pretty obvious that they have abandoned it.
Once they went to Funaki, who is not a passer, switched to running the ball more than passing it, even though we are not built for that, it was pretty obvious that they have no vision. They don’t believe in the system anymore. They are just flying by the seat of their pants.
Our team can still grow and get better, but they have to go back to our vision. What is it? Putting Funaki in, is just putting a band aid on a broken arm. It might make you feel a little better, but it won’t fix it.
We have to go through the pains of watching a true throwing QB learn the system and get better in the system. Or abandon the run and shoot and switch to an offense that Funaki can work in. Only problem is that we don’t have the other parts for that kind of offense.
With Funaki, we are just throwing out the system.
Sorry Funaki, I love you, but you weren’t meant for this system.
I hope the coaches realize this sooner, instead of later.
Sorry, I had to make my peace.
I still love UH and support them 100%. I just don’t want to see things go down hill so fast.

After that, catching up with the blog was painful because I knew what would be happening and how things would turn ugly.

  469. Long Time UH Fan October 17, 2008 7:40 pm

    OUCH!

The Warriors played well enough in the first half to stay within 3 points of the Broncos; which in fact should’ve been 10 up at halftime. You always go for points after marching downfield for 68 yards in a 15-play drive; never come away empty as it’s still early in the 1st quarter.

    Second half—one snap and clear.

Focus on next week’s game…Nevada is not a guarantee win.

    Go Warriors!

  470. Garret October 17, 2008 7:42 pm

Positive: D played pretty well, except for some quick or tricky plays by BSU–like that screen pass where the QB looked one direction up until he spun around to throw it the other direction.

Positive: Salas played well once again. He’s proven that he will be a valuable contributor throughout his Warrior career and he really was a bright spot. Great concentration, great hands!

Positive: The refs called a fair game and the Warriors were careful to pull up at the sideline to not get any personal fouls. That impressed me, especially as the time started to run out since lots of other teams let them get out of control in those situations.

Positive: The offense did a great job with 3rd and 4th down conversions, especially on that long first drive. Too bad it didn’t result in points.

Positive: The D got back-to-back turnovers and the offense turned the first turnover into a TD.

Anyone who watched last year knows that Graunke can run the offense.
I have no idea why they are not talking about him anymore. Obviously there is something the coaches don’t like about him.
But if not him, put in Alexander or Raush. I would rather have a true passer be in there learning and throwing picks than someone who isn’t a true passer. You can’t take an option QB and turn them into a pocket passer.
But Alexander and Raush are pocket passer, so they just need experience in the system to get better.
Things are not going to get better with Funaki, unless we change everything. Are we really ready for that?

  473. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 7:46 pm

Hawaii needs something to get it into rhythm, to pull up its briches and go running at times.

Maybe a number of 2-minute offenses is what we need to get kick started. No huddle offense packages designed to get the team back into the groove. They could employ three different quartebacks. Each quarterback would learn a different 2-minute no huddle offense. The next week they would switch and learn each other’s offense. After two cycles they would learn still another.

We need to hear the coach’s review on the players. Was it a bad pass or was did our receiver go the wrong route? Is Inoke forcing the pass, not really seeing the receiver and throwing by memory?

When our defense started creating turnovers, I really got excited and thought we were going to win, but our own turnovers shot us in the foot. And it’s not the fumbles, it’s those darn interceptions. The Coaches need to figure out why those are happening and do what it takes to rectify it. I do not mean to give up passing. I mean to change the running patterns so that the QB and receivers can make the proper reads, see if the player will be in the clear and throw the ball where it needs to be. If it means throwing a hundred 3 yard passes, so be it. 3+ yards are still better than a turnover.

    Oh well… NEVADA… KILL!!!!

  474. pissed October 17, 2008 7:49 pm

I have been lurking for a long time are you all afraid of making coaching criticisms…come on there is talent on this team ..coaches are really blowing it..o tackles don’t have a clue,,going on 4th when you can get points.. play calling..what a joke ..don’t just jump on the band wagon..express yourself..

  475. Garret October 17, 2008 7:50 pm

Negative: Injuries REALLY made a difference in the game–the Warriors weren’t the same after the losses of Pilares and Watson. And wasn’t Mouton hurt also?

Negative: BSU’s DL and blitzes really were effective in rushing the QB today. The pressure, especially from the outside, really caused problems. I think that directly led to a couple of INTs and indirectly caused several others.

Negative: Lots of drops, especially one huge drop by Lane that could have changed the game around–especially for what it would have done for Inoke’s confidence.

Negative: Punt returns were NOT effective, and I think 2 punts rolled really far after they were not fielded. However, BSU did not have any big returns and there were no big plays in special teams–unless you count the loss of 15-20 yards in field position by punts rolling a big play, which I do.

  476. Postmanke October 17, 2008 7:50 pm

I dont think Ron Lee is meant for this system either. Would it be too much of a stretch to make halftime (season) adjustments and put Rolo upstairs to handle the play calling?

    Just wondering??

  477. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 7:51 pm

The only real difference in this game was at the QB position and an actual offensive plan that was executed fairly well. We handed them the victory, in overall talent, we’re as good as Boise.

The rebuilding seems to be on the offensive coaching side.

As much as it pains me to say, but we won’t go to a bowl game with Funaki at the helm. If we would have developed Alex or Rausch the way the coaches are supposed to (is Graunke really still injured?), the growing pains might be almost over by now.

With a half way consistent offense, we could have beaten Boise and should have beaten San Jose. With five interceptions or whatever, you can’t beat anybody.

I love the Warriors, but we have to be able to call it as we see it.

Their Freshman QB was very impressive. I’ve never seen a young kid with that much poise in his first year. Maybe Cory Nielson will be the one for our future.

Well, 6 games left to make it to a bowl, what are we going to do?

  480. Garret October 17, 2008 8:02 pm

A couple of days ago I talked about how BSU would try to punish Inoke all game, hoping that it would have an effect on him or get him out of the game. And they DID punish Inoke all game and it did have an effect. Their rush hit Inoke time after time, not only for the sacks but also for countless incompletions and interceptions.

One *big* downside of running a run-and-shoot offense while adding a lot of running plays for the QB is that the QB takes hits in both the passing game and the running game. That can have a cumulative effect and reduce the passing effectiveness of the QB (no matter who that QB is)…and I think it has happened in a couple of games this season. Inoke was NOT the same QB in the second half than he was in the first half, and I think others already pointed out that he didn’t pass as well ever since the sack where the rush sandwitched him.

Maybe this is why true run-and-shoot systems try to limit the use of the QB in the running game. Smaller-sized QBs (I saw Vince Young getting a lot of hits, but he didn’t pass that often and he was a huge guy) getting lots of hits in the running game and while in the pocket trying to throw can have a cumulative effect…

  481. what? October 17, 2008 8:03 pm

Well, whatever happens, I’ll still be at the next game supporting them. No matter what we gotta support the team. That is the only way we can ever really be big time.

I am working overseas so I am not up on the Warriors day to day as much as I would like…..but what is going on with Tyler Grunke. Is he still recovering from his thumb injury. Is he in the doghouse somehow, can someone please enlighten me. I think Funake is a gamer but erractic.
It is Tyler with the experience and accuracy that will get us through the tough games. I don’t see us getting past the the BCS schools at the end of season without Tyler, without those wins say good bye to the Hawaii Bowl.

so what is the bottom line???

  484. Garret October 17, 2008 8:13 pm

One thing that I’ve noticed in several games is that the offense gets much less effective in the 2nd half after the other teams makes their adjustments. Ron Lee even referred to this after a previous game. It seems to me that the coaches have done a good job of preparing the offense to start the game, and the offense moves the ball early in the game, but then after the defense adjusts then UH’s counter-adjustments aren’t that effective.

  485. bighilofan2 October 17, 2008 8:15 pm

    okay okay, nuff already.

inoke got his noodles rung a few times. the d hit his arm and contributed to an INT. the Oline neva give him enuff time sumtimez. the coaches gambles and lost.

the bottom line is we’re in this together. we got a great coach, great motivational guy, i think we gotta prepare for next year now, as well as do well the rest of this year. i can see in his eyes that Rolo get headlite fever too. So does Brian. But Mack’s got their back, and thats good enough for me.

I agree, the coachesing didn’t appear great today. But I don’t know the inside scoops, so I’m not gonna judge right now. But I’ll admit to being p.o’d. grrrrrr…

I’m not sure which bottom line you are referring to. I know that the team will need the fans to show up and be LOUD against Nevada. That is a crucial game because the schedule gets a little lighter for several games after that, but Nevada can be a tough team. I’ve seen a lot of times where people don’t show up at Aloha Stadium after a loss…but the team needs then and I hope that there are 40,000+ loud Warrior fans in the stadium next week.

If UH beats Nevada, the record will be 4-4 and the Hawaii Bowl will be a reasonable goal. This will be a huge game! I saw a post above looking for a 5-0 run before Cincinnati comes to Aloha Stadium, and that would be great…but it has to start with the Nevada game.

  490. FloridaTed October 17, 2008 8:20 pm

Off course we’ll keep supporting our Warriors, that’s not the issue. The issue is our offensive “system”, which doesn’t exist right now.

We don’t have the big bodies to power run on anybody. We’re a passing team first, we have the players and several passers on our team, let’s pick one and let him grow with it. It can not be worse than what’s going on now. Many times our offense looks like a Keystone Cops fire drill. Sorry, but that is coaching.

McMackin needs to get more involved in the offense,or should it be less? I’m not sure which is which anymore. I’m confused and so is the offense.

We had some bad luck with the QB’s in the beginning and ever since, the coaches seem to be insecure about that position.

  491. Garret October 17, 2008 8:25 pm

I wouldn’t give up on Ron Lee, Rolo and Brian Smith! They have had to deal with a lot of problems this season that were out of their control–lots of injuries on the OL, Tyler’s problems that caused him to miss lots of practice time before the season, injuries to all of the top 4 QBs, lots of inexperience with the WRs.

People are frustrated now and want to vent, I understand that. They sure weren’t expressing that frustration after the previous 2 games.

  492. hilogreg October 17, 2008 8:45 pm

Because of work I haven’t been able to go to or even watch a Warrior game this season, but I am Warrior green through and through even if they don’t make to a bowl game. I have been following the Warrior beat and the Advertiser stories, I am just having a hard time hearing about the turnovers and the fact that for a R&S offense we haven’t managed a 300yd passing game this year.
It would be nice to know the inside scoop, or any scoop regarding TG.

    Simple… turnovers.

The defense did it’s job and we were able to sustain some drives but just couldn’t finish.

I’ve been frustrated ever since Rausch lost his starting job because of tightness in his arm. Is it still tight? Something is going on with this team that lots of us dont know.. I do know that Rausch is the best QB we have and he is not playing. Let him atleast take the reps in the game he’ll be able to make the reads with experience, he def can make all the throws.

JJ’s playing a freshmen that is learning the system. The team is not winning but they are so much fun to watch. They are making the commitment now which is already paying off.

hey, lets be easy on our team. the reality is that we need to realize that this year’s team is not reloading.

    it is rebuilding.

the harsh truth of the matter is that we are not as talented as we were the past two years. in fact, it will be a long time coming for us to witness those teams of the two years past.

that is reality folks. so, please don’t jump on the players or coaches. trust me, they are trying as hard as they can. have you ever been in situation albeit at work, at the playground, or on a team where someone is just physically superior??? i am sure we all have. put yourself in their shoes. hey you were there before, too.

i keep saying, we have not had great recruiting the past 3-4 years and it shows. oh we have some talented guys now. but, we lack depth.

the good news is it will get better. if we keep recruiting like we are this year, it will happen in two-three years. meanwhile, if you truly are a warrior fan, they don’t be a fair weathered fan, be a fan for life.

you all got to make a commitment too!

Our offense started to sputter after Pilares got injured and got totally off track after Inoke took that hit and apparently hurt his hip.

    Garret,

I agree that Boise set out to punish Inoke and they succeeded. They did what we couldn’t do. Pilares’s injury compounded the number of hits Inoke was getting.

    Florida Ted,
I believe we do have an offense, BUT only when everyone is 100% — Pilares, Libre, Inoke, Bain, Lane and Salas. But Lane has that injured hand, Libre isn’t 100%, Pilares got thumped early, and as a result Inoke got twice the punishment. The rest of our Offensive weapons are still too inconsistent. I agree that we don’t have a pure run-and-shoot quarterback, but I also don’t see how a pocket passer can succeed without more consistent blocking from our O-line and RB. Too many weak links and we know that a team is only as strong as it’s weakest link.

Our warriors can improve. Our second and third team Oline players need to step up and take command.

  498. Garret October 17, 2008 8:57 pm

By the way, I think it was Kazz who asked about the rollouts and bootlegs with Inoke. UH did *not* use that part of the offense much in this game, probably because BSU’s defensive game plan took it away.

BSU had a LB ready when UH tried a bootleg and Inoke was tackled on a very good 1-on-1 stop by the LB. I was impressed by the discipline by the defender and by his athletic ability, but that type of coaching and execution is why BSU’s D is so good.

We have to remember that UH cannot do anything that they want…the defense will take some of that away. BSU gave the short stuff to the outside on passes, but it seemed that they made it hard for the short stuff in the middle of the field–I’m guessing that is why we didn’t see more slants and other routes.

    Garret,

I’m not giving up on anything or anybody, but when I watch the games, it just becomes real frustrating. Funaki is a Warrior, but he’s an infantry officer, when special ops is required. I know, kind of a silly analogy, but if you take todays game and just exchange the QB’s, we win by thirty points.

We have lots of talent, there were some great catches today, but Funaki seems to lose his concentration as soon as things go south.

Something needs to be done and fast, I’m not ready to write off the season by a long shot. Boises O-Line is young and inexperienced, but they’re getting better every game, we have regressed. Sorry, but to me that’s coaching.

The coaches need to get together and re-assess everything and if that means going back to the drawing board, so be it.

  501. Postmanke October 17, 2008 9:04 pm

A taller more accurate pocket passer will have more options other than to make the hardest throw in football – out patterns. Why is he throwing out patterns? he is not tall enough to throw over the D line. How many balls were batted down tonight? season? how many plays did we make down the middle of the field? we cant, too short. We are too one dimensional and have become too predictable. Even when we slide out of the pocket he cant make the throw down the lane…

  502. Garret October 17, 2008 9:06 pm

    what?,

I do not think anyone was completely satisfied with the offense in the La Tech game, especially the coaches. I was pretty satisfied after the Fresno State game because of the efficiency and zero turnovers. Plus, winning in Fresno is very, very difficult! However, we did NOT hear this type of criticism of the coaches after those games!

What you are referring to as “putting on the breaks” is quite possibly a difference between having an offensive-minded head coach vs. a defensive-minded head coach. Mac talks about time of possession, thinks about field position, and takes into account trying to keep the other team’s offense off the field. JJ (probably to an extreme more than almost any other coach) never seemed to think about those things. Mac isn’t as conservative as Coach Tomey, but I don’t think anyone should expect him to be as aggressive on offense as JJ was.

JJ is gone, Mac is the coach, and things will be different. No sense wishing things were the same as before, because forcing Mac to coach differently would go against what he believes in and would not be as effective for him. Being conservative with the lead (which doesn’t apply to this game) is something that Mac might believe him and UH won both of those games.

  503. Nalani October 17, 2008 9:08 pm

The reason this loss was so hard to take was because we beat Fresno and had our hopes very high for this game. But realistically, no one in the WAC has beat Boise at home, including all the years under previous coaching staffs. So let’s call it what it is – a tough loss to a very strong team with a HUGE home field advantage. Maybe the next time we play them at home will be ‘our game’. Who knows.

But to say that this loss means that Inoke can’t be our QB or Ron Lee can’t run our offense is just venting. It’s OK to vent though. We’re fans. But gotta take the good w the bad and just keep moving forward.

  504. Kazz October 17, 2008 9:13 pm

I’m tired of all the negativity. Remember IT’S ONLY A GAME, NOT LIFE OR DEATH.

Kazz, Garret & al, very eloquent as usual.

  506. Garret October 17, 2008 9:14 pm

We have lots of talent, there were some great catches today, but Funaki seems to lose his concentration as soon as things go south.

    FloridaTed,

One of the games (the Weber State game) that you criticized Inoke for “losing his concentration” actually had a good reason–he suffered a concussion. I think that his struggles in that game (after an excellent start) were understandable.

I think that *any* QB will lose effectiveness when he’s hit hard all game. Remember, our defensive coordinator used to preach the number of hits they wanted to put on a QB and he was correct on the effects that seems to have…and in Inoke’s case, the adjustments in the offense just give him *more* hits. The ideal answer would be for Inoke to not take any hits while he’s in the pocket, but that obviously isn’t going to happen to any QB.

Maybe the answer is to use another QB for a few plays or for a series here or there to give Inoke a break and some extra time to recover. BSU had a RB and a WR take snaps from center today, and having Pilares or Alexander or Tyler take a few snaps from center for specific plays could be useful. The Dolphins have a package they use with their RB taking snaps, 10+ college teams have similar packages already…maybe reducing the number of hits Inoke has to absorb will make him more effective late in games. That is Mac’s philosophy at so many other positions…

  507. Postmanke October 17, 2008 9:14 pm

    Garret,

JJ maybe gone be we are still running his offense. We should not be making any variations to it. Just run it..

I would say Coach Mac thus far is way more conservative than Tomey. At least Tomey had the Muddle Huddle.. We dont even have a receivers in motion…

I heard much worse in the Hawaii section at the Oregon State game. And those people didn’t have money on the game like in Kazz’s theory, they were just frustrated fans. Venting is normal and I’m not going to come down on others for doing so…but it is too bad that there is an extra day we have to wait before the next game can put this behind us!

  510. Kekoa October 17, 2008 9:19 pm

I refuse to say anything negative about our boys. They played hard and tuff against the true #15 team in the nation. They all have my undying support this year because it is a painful transition period for all of them.

There were many positive plays made that I’d rather remember about today’s scuffle. The Katoosh of the game that caused Boise’s #80 to cough up the football was a highlight reel for the ages!

So we move on to play Nevada, and sell Wolf tickets at the door. Let’s go Warriors!

  511. chawan_cut October 17, 2008 9:23 pm

  512. Garret October 17, 2008 9:25 pm

    Postmanke,

UH throws a LOT more now than I remember during the Tomey years. I think that Mac is an aggressive coach and UH will be more aggressive in their base offense than during the Tomey years. However, you are correct that Tomey had some awesome trick plays–besides the muddle huddle (and its variations that UH used), I remember crazy plays like the time the WR ran to the sideline but didn’t go out of play and then was wide open for a bomb.

Long Beach Poly won today and this article mentions a Warrior commit.

After taking the opening kickoff, Poly needed just seven plays to take the lead on a 1-yard run by Melvin Richardson, and the Jackrabbits made it 9-0 on the first play of the second quarter when Matauaina Iosia and George Daily-Lyles sacked Rams QB Jake Holtz in the end zone for a safety.

  515. Garret October 17, 2008 9:29 pm

If you thinks things are bad, just be glad you aren’t a Washington State fan! And be glad that they come to Aloha Stadium this year!

The Cougars, who play USC Saturday, aren’t just 0-4 in Pac-10 play, they’ve been outscored 223-33 in those games. Some are wondering if they might be the worst team in conference history.

At this stage, it seems reasonable to ask: Are they the worst team in the history of the Pacific 10 Conference?

“The program has hit some hard times,” first-year Coach Paul Wulff said. “It’s just an overall culture that kind of went sideways.”

Subpar recruiting by the previous regime left Washington State with scant talent, and injuries have further thinned the ranks. The offense could be missing as many as five starters for today’s game, including leading rusher Dwight Tardy.

So many quarterbacks have gone down that Wulff recently invited students to an open audition, looking for a warm body to run the scout team.

  516. Garret October 17, 2008 9:32 pm

Kekoa #510 – Right on Brah! These players are fine young men who work so hard to be good players and good students. I see it every day and I’m always impressed with how hard it is to be a D1 student athlete.

And my favorite play was in the last minute when Salas blind sided that Boise guy (LB? DB? not sure) and he was seeing stars on the sidelines. The game was way out of reach by that time, but the boys kept playing hard and fighting the whole time. Gotta love that.

Next week is another game. An opportunity to redeem themselves.

  518. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 17, 2008 9:34 pm

Hi Kelli- just logged back in. I hope you are feeling better!

Last year Colt was put down as a “system” QB.
This year Inoke is put down as a “QB with no system”.
Can’t please all the people all the time. But my naive observation is- last year JJ was an offensive visionary and was fully engaged in its execution. While he was doing that, Coach Mack was giving his all to building the defensive “system”. They complimented each other beautifully. Coach Mack had time to build his Dee because our O-system was effective.

This year, Coach Mack is picking up where he left off and is taking the Dee to a higher level. But there is no JJ working a vision with the Offense. A creative coach with time can have a vision and develop the talent to insert into his schemes. Or, he can build an offense designed around the talent he has to work with.

Had Tyler been on board from day one, we might be looking at a different outcome. But the heir-apparent was not ready to step up
and the potential system players (JC transfers) did not have time to learn the system in a gametime scenario.

So it fell to Inoke and his ability to escape when he is healthy. The fact is that there was no solid backup for him when he was obviously struggling. Greg is still a bit green and Jake hasn’t had the reps either.

I hope our Offensive Coaches can pull something together for Nevada and the rest of the season. Even if, for now, we have a knee-jerk Offense, the other two parts of the team will be able to put them in position to score.

Next year, I hope we have a clear offensive vision to pursue. The seeds can be sown this year by learning from our mistakes and playing each game just “a little bit better” than the one before.

    GO WARRIORS!

  519. Postmanke October 17, 2008 9:41 pm

    Garret,

Just because we throw the ball more does not make us less conservative. With Tomey we had 1000 yard rushers and his offense scored more than we are right now. But he had athletes at QB – Lyons, Quarles, Cherry. I dont know if he would ever play Funaki at QB. He may be more aggressive in regards to choosing his starters.

Playing Funaki at QB I would think would be a conservative choice…

I think you’re right. The Boise coaches know they got lucky on certain counts this game. It was very close at halftime and they made enough mistakes to cost them the game, if UH hadn’t made their own share of them. I think they’re licking their wounds and walking away happy they dodged the bullet (the same bullet that Fresno wasn’t able to dodge.)

That was pretty tough. It was going to take a very good game from all units to beat Boise State. There is a reason they lose so few games, and we will have to wait two years to get another crack at them on the smurf turf. There is a good chance that they will not have lost a WAC home game until then, too.

I continue to be impressed by the defense. There is a bright future there. The offense is quite frankly a mess. Hey, we held Boise to 27 pts, same as last year. The difference was that last year we hung 39 points on them and this year we could only come up with a touchdown. 288 yards of total offense isn’t going to win many games in the this conference.

On a brighter note (for me) I was able to figure out how to use VideoLan to record the OC16 stream of the Punahou – Iolani game and I just finished watching the saved stream. Charlie Weis was there and Vinton did a halftime interview with him. Punahou put a serious hurt on Iolani. Manti Te’o didn’t disappoint Charlie. One TD reception, one blocked punt return for a TD, and two or three touchdown runs. I lost count. He didn’t even play that many offensive downs. Iolani had real trouble with Punahou’s defense and really had no answers at all for the offense. I was surprised given how they played St Louis and Kamehameha. No doubt they were banged up a bit but given that they beat St Louis and played Kamehameha to a draw for most of that game I didn’t expect them to get physically dominated the way they did. Great camera work by the OC16 staff.

Nevada will be a VERY tough game. They had a tough loss to NM State last week, but their only other losses have been to Texas Tech and Mizzou. No WAC team has played Boise State tougher on the blue turf than Nevada did last year. On the other hand Nevada also doesn’t have any quality wins yet this year. One thing that is almost certain is that there won’t be over 1,000 yards of combined offense like they had with NM State.

I have to catch a 6am plane for HNL and a Rotary Prez meeting out at Turtles…
Then a little relaxing fun and back to Kauai Sunday AM while the Redskins are on the field with the Browns.

So, I’m going to look for Tsai-kos in the game film later… must moemoe soon!

Sweet Warrior- Healing Dreams, Ka Kou!

  530. Nalani October 17, 2008 9:51 pm

Oh there you are Liz. Maybe the internet is slow on Kauai?

    LizK-
I like your assessment of the bigger picture. I’m very hopeful that our team will improve and I’m looking forward to seeing the next game.

  532. madeinhawaii October 17, 2008 9:53 pm

    Nalani,

So true. We knew that for Hawaii to win they would have to play an error-free game. That didn’t happen. With 5 interceptions against Boise, who’d stand a chance of winning? Oh well,…. Hawaii Bowl!….. Gotta get 4 more wins!! We start with NEVADA!

  533. Nalani October 17, 2008 9:54 pm

OK. I’ll check you guys tomorrow. Many of us will feel better tomorrow.

This article was funny – about very dumb TV shows. For your reading pleasure, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27201602/

  534. Kekoa October 17, 2008 9:56 pm

Good Night Nalani ~ As I said earlier, nothing but positive things to say about the boys tonight. They fought hard against a 15th ranked team. Even beat the spread! We’ll get on Nevada next week and post another ‘W’

  535. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 17, 2008 9:56 pm

Haha, Nalani… just like real life. I no can hear you when I stay talking so much… I no can read you when I stay typing so much 😆

    Hi Sports!
See you for something here next week!!!

  536. Kekoa October 17, 2008 10:00 pm

Hope you all enjoyed a little light-hearted “Dr. Hook” at # 524. I wanted to end the day on a happy note!

  537. what? October 17, 2008 10:01 pm

    Liz:
I think we had a system and a vision, but the coaches threw it out the window the first time Alexander threw an interception.
If we continue on at this like this, with Inoki and a knee-jerk Offense, maybe we will win half of our games and finish 6 and 7 or maybe even 7 and 6.
If we go to one of the JCs and stick with our offense and let them learn it, maybe we will finish 4 and 9 or 5 and 8, but I think in the long run, that will help us a lot more then just being a knee-jerk offense with no real direction.
If we continue on with our Knee-jerk offense, not only do we put next year’s offense back, we also scare away any potential recruits who wanted to play for our run and shoot offense. Who is going to come to Hawaii when they have no idea what kind of offense we are running? Do you think Colt would have come here if he had watched our offense this year?
He saw what Timmy Chang was doing, got excited about it and decided to come. I’m not sure how many people will be excited to come after watching this years offense.
I hope they get back to what they said they were going to do and run the run and shoot.
If not, they need to find a new identity and fast.

  538. Addahknowsports© October 17, 2008 10:13 pm

Oki doki Liz. See you next week. BTW, are Redskins going to be on tv on Sunday?

  539. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 17, 2008 10:18 pm

what? – yeah. Rocks and hard places. Here’s where character counts- from bottom to top.
Will the UH ivory tower understand what is means to rebuild and let the coaches do it “right”?
Will the fans believe in Coach Mack and continue to support his salary while he rebuilds?

I (and I am nobody but a fan) believe that everyone from the bottom to the top truly believed we could sustain the momentum of last year’s perfect regular season and our team and coaches decided to fulfill that expectation.

The character part will show when the UH continues to back Mack and his coaching team and not throw everyone under the bus if they start concentrating on building offensive game experience rather than game winning…

    Does that make sense?

  540. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 17, 2008 10:19 pm

Hi Liz, Kekoa, a-sports, Nalani & mih! It was a disappointing but not unexpected loss.

one last comment to what? and then I will never comment again about these….these…
what? – I’m not questioning your view. I’m questioning your timing. This is the first time you post on the blog and all you had to say were negative things. Remember what they say about 1st impressions.
I do NOT think I own this team. Ask any of the regular posters. I am a clueless wahine. I just have hit my tolerance level for naysayers.

The sun will rise tomorrow and the world will still be around. Remember the 48 hour rule.

  542. haka October 17, 2008 10:23 pm

    Liz, you rock!

  543. what? October 17, 2008 10:24 pm

    Liz,
Very true. People want wins. Hard to sit through a 4 and 9 season even if you are “rebuilding.”
But if we are going to get back to where we were last year, I think we have to.
Maybe I am wrong about Funaki, but to me it seems like using him is just a “win as many as you can now” plan, with very little thought of the future.
They say he can “manage the game.” I don’t think we need some one who can “manage.” we need someone who can run the offense and it sure hasn’t been running this year. Even when JJ was here and we had rebuilding years, we still put up big numbers on offense, but this year, that is all gone.

  544. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 17, 2008 10:26 pm

    And- my last thought-
The greater the crises, the greater the victories.

With fire, the gold is tested.
With gold, the souls are tested.

The UH football program is more solid than ever it was when JJ was here. New recruits need to know that we have a solid program with the visible support of our Chancellor, our AD and our Coaches, who are determined to graduate successful student-athletes. And the FAN SUPPORT with make them proud!

Auntie Virginia- THANKS for providing the Cheer Squad! They sounded fantastic on ESPN streaming video from England!

  545. Kekoa October 17, 2008 10:27 pm

Valiently said jm2375. Gotta stay positive! These are every mother’s sons. (Nalani’s for instance). They leave it out there on the field every week. Give them credit where the credit is due…please.

Oki doki, again Liz. I should be ready for a break around then. You still have my cell number, yeah? Maybe call me just before you board the plane. Where is Robs? And where are we meeting?

  550. Kekoa October 17, 2008 10:37 pm

what? I know your comments are meant to be analytical and not anti-Warrior, but it’s not easy to move an offense that is not quite ready for prime time.

The previous administration had 3 years to ‘gel’ and work their magic. This group had about 3 months! Colt never won at Boise. How many teams have? Give Inoke some credit, he gave it his best shot. That’s why I refuse to get negative with this work in progress.

  551. what? October 17, 2008 10:47 pm

    Kekoa,
I know it is, and I know we haven’t even won there. I think that is why is so frustrating. Our Defense played so good, if we had any offense to speak of, we really could have made it a good game.
I know Inoke is doing his best. I do give him a lot of credit. But at the same time, I can’t remember any offense that we have had within the past 9 years that had such a hard time moving the ball as this one does. That was in the good years and the rebuilding years. With June Jones here, we were always able to move the ball. That is why I really think two things, one that Inoke is not the right guy for this system and two, our new coaches have given up on the system too soon.

  563. iwonderwhythehateme October 18, 2008 12:00 am

    Kazz-

It wasnt just turnovers that made lose the game….quite frankly our tackles on the O-line are….well i am going to be very very nice…they are not *ahem* IDEAL.

sooner than later we need to get big, quick footed, long armed tackles to keep the pressure off.

The pressure from the outside kills us and will continue to kill us day in and day out….

Mr. Brian Smith, what the heck are you doing to address these problems that we had since LAST YEAR?

  564. iwonderwhythehateme October 18, 2008 12:05 am

    Also,

How many of you realized that Funaki was making passes into TRIPLE AND QUADRUPLE COVERAGE?

Like i said earlier, one of the other receivers should have been open unless Boise was playing with 20 men on the field….What is up with that? Not going through progressions maybe?

  565. iwonderwhythehateme October 18, 2008 12:20 am

    Garret,

I agree with you on mixing up our plays, direct snaps etc. How much do you think the playbook from Norm Chow or Urban Meyer will go for? haha.

wellz better get to bed. gnite

    Go Warriors!

  566. Mad Dog October 18, 2008 1:12 am

A good quarterback begins with the heart of the offense, those five guys on the O-line. Even Colt would have had a difficult time today.

Our defense performed well. They seemed prepared for Boise’s tricky offense. In past years, Boise’s offense left our defense flatfooted and looking quite stupid. Today’s performance was a welcomed relief.

Give credit to Boise’s coaches and players. They certainly outplayed the Warriors this afternoon.

  567. Lopaka43 October 18, 2008 1:22 am

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!!

Lots of negative venting on the blog tonight from lurkers who never blogged in a long time or never blogged before. Well, welcome out of the shadows. I spend a lot of time there myself. I agree with Kazz, however. You should share when it is good times and not just when it is bad.

I think the coaches and the team are doing as well as they can, given all of the changes and challenges they have faced since last January. I believe in them and point to Fresno as an example of why. That was a great win in Fresno, and it should not be forgotten in the pain that this loss caused. And that first half tonight should have ended in a 10-10 tie, and was as good a half as we have ever had at Boise, in my memory. We also were playing against one of the best defenses in the nation.

I think the problem is that we have coaches who believe in the run and shoot, fans who fell in love with Hawaii when we were good at the run and shoot, and a starting quarterback who should be running an option offense.

This blend of limited run and shoot and option offense does not yet have the big play/quick strike ability that made it possible to overcome a three touchdown deficit last year. It has shown the ability to work itself up the field with short passes and short to medium runs. However, our defense, when it doesn’t have to start on our end of the field, has proven that it can stop good teams, and win the turn over battle.

Unless we find that quick strike ability, to win games with this team, I think we must play the field position game, consistently putting the opponent in bad field position, and gradually gaining better and better field position, so that there is always the threat of a field goal and sometimes a touchdown.

We need excellent punts to pin our opponents back as far as possible, and we cannot afford to ever throw long into double and triple coverage. We have seen way too many of those this season.

Our run and shoot offense is designed to take what the defense gives us, and I think in the second half, Boise dared Ron Lee and Inoki to go long. When they bit, either Inoki and the receivers were not on the same page, or the ball was short. I felt that Ron Lee wants to believe that Inoki can execute that part of the playbook, but I don’t think that he can consistently pull off those plays.

What was needed was what we got in the first half. A relatively conservative offense that could keep the ball away from BSU, move the ball up the field with a balanced attack, and not turn the ball over. I am not sure if BSU made adjustments at the half or if we got in trouble by switching our patterns. I’m interested in what some of the sharper football minds on this blog have to say about the difference between the two halves.

And I can see why Alexander is not the #1 quarterback. It was painful watching him try to run. He can make that long pass, but has very limited mobility and no speed at all. He would need a much stronger O-line than we had by the end of the game tonight. BSU was crushing our guys backward towards the end.

Colt set the standard for the kind of quarterback that is needed to be successful with the run and shoot offense, combining mobility with accuracy and zip. Neither Funaki or Alexander appear to be able to meet that standard. Graunke apparently still has injury problems.

I support the team and the coaches, feel pride in what they were able to do in Boise, and look forward to seeing how they rise to the challenge against Nevada. See you all at the Tsaikogate!! Go WARRIORS!!!

  568. McLovin October 18, 2008 8:35 am

Inoke did his best. Got hit way too many times. Wonder why he rarely ran with the ball. Was it due to coaches play calling? Maybe they figured Boises D-line was way too fast. UH’s Defense was awesome.

  569. al October 18, 2008 10:11 am

    iwonderwhythehateme:

ahem. why point in coach smith’s direction? he is not the one playing.

  570. iwonderwhythehateme October 18, 2008 11:08 am

    al,

i point in that direction because i really really hate to point fingers at a player (even though i kinda did)………If i give you the benefit that the Boise line and LB’s were good, then fine…but what about previous games where the O-line tackles collapsed?……..
