Thanks for the vid link al.

He looks pretty good. Nice game speed, hits hard and stuff…I guess this is a shout out to local DL/LB prospects that have been offered by UH and have yet to commit. Do it now, or you will really have to look towards the mainland, like it or not.

In the years to come, UH’s Defense will be some thing to be reckoned with as years past…ST’s will also improve I feel.

Really hoping for OL and RB though.

    BTW, Manti who?? I kid, I kid….

we have a bevy of de’s now.

so we start 5 olinemen, 4 dlinemen, 4 receivers, 4 defensive backs, 3 lb’s, thus we concentrate in that order.
so we are looking for oline, corners, a couple of outside lb’s, a couple of wr’s, a couple of dt’s, a qb and a rb or two.

special teams would be the lb’s, db’s, and fast dlinemen or two.

    hey we need a punter.

A pair of chickens walk up to the circulation desk at a public library and say, ‘Buk Buk BUK.’ The librarian decides that the chickens desire three books, and gives it to them…and the chickens leave shortly thereafter.

Around midday, the two chickens return to the circulation desk quite vexed and say,’ Buk Buk BuKKOOK!’ The librarian decides that the chickens desire another three books and gives it to them. The chickens leave as before.

The two chickens return to the library in the early afternoon, approach the librarian, looking very annoyed and say, ‘Buk Buk Buk Buk Bukkooook!’ The librarian is now a little suspicious of these chickens. She gives them what they request, and decides to follow them.

She followed them out of the library, out of the town, and to a park. At this point, she hid behind a tree, not wanting to be seen. She saw the two chickens throwing the books at a frog in a pond, to which the frog was saying, “Rrredit Rrredit Rrredit…”

Recently, the Psychic Hotline and Psychic Friends Network have launched hotlines for frogs. Here is the story of one frog and his discussing with his psychic.

A frog telephones the Psychic Hotline and is told, “You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.”

The frog says, “This is great! Will I meet her at a party, or what?”

“No,” says the psychic. “Next semester in her biology class.”

There was once a snail who was sick and tired of his reputation for being so slow. He decided to get some fast wheels to make up the difference. After shopping around a while, he decided that the Datson 240-Z was the car to get. So the snail goes to the nearest Datsun dealer and says he wants to buy the 240-Z, but he wants it repainted “240-S”.

    The dealer asks, “Why ‘S’?”

The snail replies, “‘S’ stands for snail. I want everybody who sees me roaring past to know who’s driving.”

Well, the dealer doesn’t want to lose the unique opportunity to sell a car to a snail, so he agrees to have the car repainted for a small fee.

The snail gets his new car and spent the rest of his days roaring happily down the highway at top speed. And whenever anyone would see him zooming by, they’d say “Wow! Look at that S-car go!”

not all of you will get it, lv

    qb – 1 commit 1 open offer

    rb 3 open offers

    wr – 3 commits 3 open offers

    o. tackles – 2 commits

    center/guards – 2 open offers

    d. tackles – 1 commit 2 open offers

    d. ends – 5 commits 2 open offers

    linebackers – 6 commits 2 open offers

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    More good news about recruits.

In between games 2 & 3 of the Women’s Volleyball game on Friday October 10, the 2007 WAC Champion Women’s Softball team will be presented with their long overdue Bracelets. The Tsaikos, led by Pomai, pulled together and were able to fund the cost of these bracelets. Let’s continue to support the women and show up for this event.

If we can get a group of at least 20 people, the cost for tickets will be $8 each for adults and $3 for under 18. Currently we have 14 people committed and are looking for a few more.

If anyone is interested in attending the game, please send me an email at stretch6592 at yahoo and I will send the details as soon as they are worked out.

Deadline is TODAY. Count needs to be put in tomorrow.

  33. Garret October 2, 2008 5:42 am

Interesting to see the records of non-BCS conference teams vs. BCS conference teams.

Over the past 10 seasons, the WAC is 43-151 vs. BCS conference teams, a success rate of 22.1%. That is third behind the MWC and C-USA.

Sadly, I cannot attend the Fresno State game this weekend. I will be on a cruise ship with my family, parents, sister and her family, and friends from the Bay Area (they got married 2 months ago and my girls were the flower girls at their wedding).

I am very unhappy that I’ll be missing the game! I may have to purchase an internet plan on the ship just to find out the score of the game. I will be off blog for basically 6 days, starting on Saturday.

  53. Garret October 2, 2008 7:24 am

    Liz,

I will try to take my frustration at missing the Fresno State game out on the buffets! The cruise to Alaska I took 5 years ago was really cool…it was like my first Cattle Call at Makinos where I ate as much or more than any of the Tsaikos there, I’ll represent the Tsaikos well!

The really cool thing about this cruise it that it was something like $350 per adult and $20 per kid for the cruise! Over the 6 days, that cruise ship is going to lose a ton of money on my kids!

  54. whitey October 2, 2008 7:24 am

Excellent post #45. a lot of games are won by teams who appear to be the underdog for the exact reason. UH should be no exception to this, but until they learn the first part, using your head, it is an uphill climb.

Speaking of uphill climb, i like the men’s vb running the hills and puking. very hard to do (running, easy to puke), but in time they become well conditioned for actual games. congrats goes to them.

  55. Garret October 2, 2008 7:26 am

    Pride,

I agree that the coaching staff is doing an *excellent* job at getting top-tier athletes. The list of BCS conference teams that offered the players that committed to the Warriors is pretty impressive! Offers from other schools are a a bigger indication of talent (at least in my opinion) than what the recruiting websites say, since the coaches study the players they are making offers to much closer than a recruiting service.

  56. whitey October 2, 2008 7:28 am

Garret, just to let you know than uncle kaname still walks everyday from house in iao valley to aunty’s grave at memorial park. talk about being in top shape.

  57. Garret October 2, 2008 7:31 am

Article that selects Jason Campbell as the favorite for the NFL MVP award this season. It mentions that he had to play well or risk losing his job to Colt.

    MVP: QB Jason Campbell, WAS

The Washington Redskins season was to live—or die—with Campbell’s ability to effectively lead his team. If he wasn’t ready for the season, the Redskins would be looking at the basement of the NFC East and counting down until the start of the Colt Brennan show.

  58. Pride. October 2, 2008 7:32 am

Five good years of recruiting with the approach that coach Mack is taking and in time we will be very talented horizontally across the board as well as vertically with considerable depth.

  59. Garret October 2, 2008 7:32 am

    whitey,

Uncle Kaname is amazing, and he has great kids too! Thank you for that note…Aunty was a great woman and I miss her.

  60. Garret October 2, 2008 7:37 am

    Pride,

I agree with what you said, but it may not take 5 years for that to happen at the rate the coaches are going! I also noted that Mack is focusing on the defense first, which is understandable given his background (just like JJ focused on the offense). It looks like UH has 8 commits and 9 offers out on offense and 13 commits and 10 offers out on defense.

Of course, the info on offers is from SportsHawaii, and there may be a lot of other offers out that are not publicly known. The ratio of offense vs. defense also might be weighted towards the defense because UH has a lot of WRs redshirting this season and has more needs on D due to the number of seniors on that side of the ball.

  61. Hoohiki October 2, 2008 7:38 am

Garret: Re #33…I wonder if that third place 22.1% WAC stat is against teams in the upper tier of the BCS versus the C-USA and MWC teams playing less tougher teams in the BCS. It would make a difference.

  62. Pride. October 2, 2008 7:38 am

Sometimes the best recruits come from watching teams with 5-star players. Went to watch Kapolei play to take a sneak peak at at 5-star player. 5-star player was good of course, but couldn’t help noticing the offensive tackle on the opposite side who would be perfect in Hawaii’s offense. Also noticed three very good linebackers and one talented defensive end.

  63. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 2, 2008 7:48 am

  64. Pride. October 2, 2008 7:48 am

A college coach once told me that there is usually so much attention being paid to these 5 and 4-star players, that there are tons of good football players from these areas that are flying under the radar. He said that a real good coach will mine for these gems that are right under their noses, but everybody misses.

  68. Garret October 2, 2008 7:54 am

    Hoohiki,

I think that type of rating would be impossible to figure out, since the top-tier for BCS conferences changed often over the 10-year period.

I know that Texas regularly played Rice and Houston (since they want a game in Houston for recruiting and for their alumni there), which are in C-USA, and both Texas and Oklahoma has scheduled TCU (top-tier MWC).

Stanford plays SJSU every season and Stanford has definitely not been in the top tier. UH played the Pac-10’s last place team last season and will play their probable last place team this season.

If we put the top-tier of BCS conference schools in one pile, I do not think that the WAC has played them any more than the MWC or C-USA. In fact, I think that some of those teams (like Texas) have been afraid of scheduling WAC teams like UH.

Part of the problem is that I seriously doubt that Idaho, Utah State, La Tech, and others in the WAC have very many wins over BCS conference teams. The top-tier of the WAC I’m guessing does well–though there was some stat that before this season BSU had lost something like 8 or 12 straight road games to BCS teams and I know that UH hasn’t done well on the road against BCS teams also.

  69. Garret October 2, 2008 7:56 am

    Pride,

I agree about undiscovered players who are overshadowed by stars on their team! I remember how Tala was definitely overlooked by recruiters because of other teammates at Kahuku–I think that UH was his only offer. And look who is in the NFL now!

  70. Garret October 2, 2008 7:59 am

    Liz,

Since we just have to get 80 hours of work done over a 2-week period, I have saved my vacation by working 12 hours or more on some days…for example, I didn’t use any vacation during my Oregon State trip because I worked late at night in Corvallis and put in extra hours after I got back.

This will be my first real vacation this year. I can’t wait!

Well, I’ve got to get to work now…

Pride, you sure got sum vision ova here and you make valid points about the future. On the other hand, I was watching the Leahey show last nite, and Yamanoha’s idea is to win now; he pointed out that get choke seniors on the team, this is their year, and that is why he’s going for experience against FSU. I wuz questioning that in my mind, because i tired of the missed this and missed thats on da O.

The O gotta play like they going play for 40 minutes.
NO excuses. This is game 5. I’m tired of hearing in my mind “but they had moah dan us, coach.”

GARRET: On your cruise, you can always pay the $$$ for the internet and one of us (like me) can either post highlights or the score. If you are taking your laptop, there is always WiFi at most of the ports depending on where your cruise is taking you.

As for that matter, where is your cruise going?♠

  81. Pride. October 2, 2008 8:30 am

Win today. That’s automatic. Gotta fish da cras out of the ocean.

  82. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2008 8:38 am

    Greetings and Blessings Warrior Nation!

I continue to love the way Mack is recruiting. I hope we can get that big back from Samoa which Tsai was hinting at.

    las vegas –
Great to read your jokes from the early a.m. once again.

    Garret –
We are going to MISS your posts. For six days, you say? Ouch!

Good morning to you too, BHF2.

  83. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 8:40 am

    Garret,

Looks like UH is batting .500 with 19 commits and 19 open offers left.

That’s 38 scholarships. Do we have that many?

  84. tommui October 2, 2008 8:42 am

    POMAI:

    UH – 24
    FSU – 10

  86. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 9:41 am

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

ST, was there more life in this mornings practice session? How were the reps divided? What time is the team leaving?

Looking at the recruiting, I’m not worried about the future. By next year we will be back in full force, but it would be great if the team could salvage a good season out of this year. Like I’ve said, a kingdom for a QB. I would be extremely happy with a 9 – 4 record.

The turn around will start in Fresno, UH 24 – Dogs 20.

  87. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 9:47 am

    FloridaTed,

Right now, a certain quarterback must be seething under his uniform. NOT because he’s not starting but because of blown opportunities to really put up the numbers we all know and he knows he’s capable of. I’m hoping the next time around, he’ll be ready and get the Warrior Juggernaut rolling.

  88. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2008 9:52 am

hey does anyone have a link to the E60 story on Brian Kajiyama? I have been pretty consistent on missing it on ESPN.

    thanks much.

  90. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 2, 2008 9:58 am

The last time I went on a real vacation was back in 1976. Since then, all time off from work has been spent on doing piled-up household chores, clearing out & reorganizing files plus getting caught up with work-related reading or personal correspondence, major repairs such as painting or laying carpet, going to family funerals on the mainland, or attending conferences. Wonder what it would be like to visit other parts of the world just to play or to track MLB from city to city or even just to catch up on personal reading and go to movies.

Garret: Have plenty fun and eat lots of desserts for me.

Off to work – have a good restoftheday everyone.

  91. Jack Flash October 2, 2008 10:02 am

longboarder- thanks for making me laugh this morning (out loud!) I needed a pick me up. That was a great letter. If any hint of this apology crap shows up on the Fresno msg boards, let’s cut/paste that letter to ’em.

  92. Garret October 2, 2008 10:48 am

GARRET: On your cruise, you can always pay the $$$ for the internet and one of us (like me) can either post highlights or the score. If you are taking your laptop, there is always WiFi at most of the ports depending on where your cruise is taking you.

As for that matter, where is your cruise going?

Thank you for the offer of help, but I think that I’ll end up paying for WiFi access (the ship has WiFi coverage) and quickly download all of the articles and my work e-mails each day. So, I’ll keep up with things that way. If we purchase enough minutes (I hope I don’t get sticker shock when I see how much that costs!), I’ll download the blog each day to keep up.

We are taking a 5-night cruise to Mexico (Cabo, Ensenada). Given the price, it was a great option for us. With all the people flying in from Hawaii and the Bay Area, I’ll be shuttling people to and from the airport which will keep me busy on Saturday and next Thursday. We’ll be sailing on the Carnival Elation. I can’t wait!

  93. Garret October 2, 2008 10:50 am

Thank you for all of the well wishes. I’m not gone yet, I have one day left of blogging.

  94. Garret October 2, 2008 10:54 am

    madeinhawaii,

All schools can only give out 25 scholarships per year. However, there is a lot of flexibility with grayshirting, academic issues, etc. Plus, some of the grayshirts this year might not have to be counted towards next years class if things work out.

Not all of the 38 will become Warriors, of course. Plus, there will be others who gets offers as the coaches get to examine more players and bring some in for recruiting visits later. I really hope that someone will walk on to be the punter, as UH will need one for next season. Maybe the punter could be given a scholarship after he’s at UH for a year…

  95. Garret October 2, 2008 10:57 am

    WassupDoc,

Believe it or not, I’m not a huge dessert eater (aside from ice cream and cheesecake). I’d much rather have 4-5 plates of the non-dessert food than reduce those plates and get more dessert. If there will be prime rib in a buffet line, I’ll be visiting the carver at least 3 times!

  96. Garret October 2, 2008 11:01 am

    Hoohiki,

I agree that stats can be misleading. However, in this case I think that the stats were reasonable since the bottom of the MWC has been better than the bottom of the WAC.

I was shocked that C-USA did slightly better than the WAC against BCS conference teams–that statistic might be misleading, it was my impression that there were more bad teams in C-USA than the WAC. Although when I think about it, there were several C-USA teams that were able to do well enough to join BCS conferences, so those teams probably had good success before they left C-USA.

  97. Larry Bass October 2, 2008 11:06 am

    @longboarder
that “letter” was hilarious! Best way to start my day.

  98. g-nalo October 2, 2008 11:15 am

Looking at the recruiting, I’m not worried about the future. By next year we will be back in full force, but it would be great if the team could salvage a good season out of this year. Like I’ve said, a kingdom for a QB. I would be extremely happy with a 9 – 4 record.

good morning to all near and far.

FloridaTed – i agree about not worrying, this season is tough for various reasons, but looking ahead we’ll be fine. not that i’m giving up on 9-4 by any means, but i’ll be happy if Hawaii makes the Hawaii Bowl.

  99. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 11:24 am

    g-nalo(98),

So would I, but it is dangerous for the team to just mentally settle for the Hawaii Bowl, they have to shoot higher in order to better reach the lower goal. If you set the thresh-hold too low, you may not reach it.

Remember, if you reach for the stars, you may not snatch one, but your hands will never be covered in mud.

  100. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 11:33 am

    madeinhawaii (87),

I’m sure he is. Graunkes mental make-up is surely tested this year. First his self inficted set backs and then his injuries. If he comes out of this mentally intact, becomes the starter and does great the rest of the year, he certainly deserves a lot of kudos from us.

Unfortunately, I just don’t see Funaki getting much better in games, unless they change the offensive make-up just for him. He is always good for one or two drives and than everything seems to fall apart. If I knew the reason, I would sell it, lol.

With that said, I 100% percent hope that he makes me eat crow by the plate full.

  101. Hoohiki October 2, 2008 11:34 am

    Pomai,

    20 UH – 35 Fresno

Sorry, Warrior Nation. I’m just trying to be realistic, especially in their home field. That doesn’t mean I’m not hoping for a UH win. I do think if we lessen the turnovers, personal fouls, give Pilares the ball, we’ve got a legitimate chance.

    Garret,

Let us know how your cruise goes..I’m looking for a cruise for our family vacation to Mexico but I’m afraid I’ll get sick in the open ocean. Our Alaskan cruise on the Princess was nice because the Inside Passage was flanked by 2 land masses most of the time, but once we got outside into the Gulf of Alaska…sickness prevailed. I’m even reluctant to try the Super Ferry, even though some people have said it wasn’t too bad. Unfortunately, I tend to listen to those that said it was the worst experience they’ve ever had.

  102. Committed Road Warrior October 2, 2008 11:40 am

    How’s everyone doing?

So busy this week, I’ve only got a little time to lurk here and there.

Gotta start looking for a hotel in Fresno for Saturday’s game. Looks like I’ll be making the 9+ hour drive to the Valley. Boy should that be fun…..

  103. Pomai October 2, 2008 11:44 am

    FloridaTed I liked that!!!

“Remember, if you reach for the stars, you may not snatch one, but your hands will never be covered in mud.”

  104. al October 2, 2008 11:44 am

    g-nalo,

    affirmative!
i believe we will pull this season out of the fire and manage at least a 7-6 season and i will see you at the hawaii bowl.

the defense will hold strong inspite of our mounting injuries. i think the defense will also start picking up some turnovers.

special teams is improving now that a lot of emphasis is being placed here these days. kelly will right his ship.

the offense has no where else but to look up and it starts this week. all we need is some consistency and to protect the rock. the coaches are smart enough to figure out that we don’t have colt and company so we adjust to the abilities on hand. and believe it or not i see the oline improving each week.

    …nuff said

congrats to Iuta Tepa, welcome to the Warriors

al – agree, offense will be tailored to the available personnel
isn’t that what good coaches do anyway?
i remember the former former AD doing that back in the day

longboarder – lmffao at 89, btw who’s Tia Tanaka?

  107. Kekoa October 2, 2008 11:59 am

Al ~ I think the boys will pull up their socks and play smarter & harder. I believe they were flat yesterday because sometimes when you train hard, you hit the wall and plateau. your energy is drained after about the 3rd day.

I think they’ll bounce back this week and put together a sustained attack and then soldier thru to a win.

  108. Unkanesson October 2, 2008 12:12 pm

    Howzit Gang,
Okay, every time I’ve picked the Warriors to pull off an upset, it hasn’t worked out. So this time, I going guarantee the Warriors’ victory by picking the favorite:

Scouting Team now includes Bighilofan2 and Pride for their “eagle-eye” in giving Coach Mack and his team somethng to chew on for recruits.

Coach Mack’s first real recruiting has been very good with more to come. I’m sure that Tony T is aware of all the excellent talent here and on the mainland.

Do UH offers include those now-seniors in Las Vegas? I believe 2 LV prospects will be visiting Hawaii in December.

Any tid-bits on Hawaii players now on the mainland wanting to come home and play for UH in any sport?

  110. Kekoa October 2, 2008 12:28 pm

Loa ~ You coming out for the VB match on the 10th? Stretch is offering a great deal. Come join us.

Ukanesson/Longboarder/any lurkers who want to, are very welcome to come. Just give Stretch a shout before close of business today.

    Go Wariors!

Do we have a chance against Fresno? Sure we have a chance…Remember “dumb and dumber”?

Lloyd: What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?
Mary: Well, that’s pretty difficult to say.
Lloyd: Hit me with it! I’ve come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
    Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I’d say more like one out of a million.
    [pause]
Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance! YES!!!

    Florida Ted –

Hi FT!! Re setting high goals – IMHO if the players focus on ONLY the next game at a time, focus ONLY on playing as error-free, close to perfect as they possibly can in their respective positions, focus ONLY on being in total control of their emotions throughout each ENTIRE game…by the end of the season, they will look back on their victories/success with pride and satisfaction that comes with knowing that yes, I did the best that anyone, including themselves, could possibly expect. As a Warrior fan, I would be very happy and satisfied. Go Warriors !

  119. Stephen Tsai October 2, 2008 1:10 pm

  123. Mrs. A-House October 2, 2008 1:17 pm

    Hoohiki –

I feel your pain, so to speak. I, too, am reluctant to sign up for a cruise because of my propensity to get seasick. A-House also has that tendency but used his prescription motion sickness “patches” and thoroughly enjoyed his salmon-fishing trip. A-House, would you please add more details…

  124. al October 2, 2008 1:18 pm

    okay….

the tangibles in football are size, strength, and speed. in other words, bigger, stronger, and faster. fresno state may have that over us, okay, perhaps many an opponent may have that over us this year as we work towards rebuilding this program. no wait, i prefer to call it reloading.
not to forget, the God given athleticism as the final tangible.

the intangibles in football as my brother pride. often cites are intensity, playing mistake free, and have the attitude that you won’t give up.

before we strap it on or heck, even after we strap it on, our opponents this year may have beaten us with the tangible stuff. that is a given in some cases. BUT, we cannot allow other teams to beat us at the intangibles. for us to be successful this year, heck, any year, we gotta beat our opponents with intensity, smarts, and never give up samurai attitudes on every play on and off the field.

that is how we will be successful.
that is what we must do beat our opponents at all of the intangible stuff.
we need to think that every game we are the underdog, the David’s, et al and therefore, we must beat them in all those intangibles.

we must practice and perform with this belief.
    last year our mantra was
    “we believe”

this year it will take a little more like……

    “WE CAN!”

  125. Mrs. A-House October 2, 2008 1:24 pm

    Garret –

Enjoy your cruise and your family reunion. The Warriors know that you are rooting for them, so they’ll do just fine. Four-five plates in addition the dessert finisher is an awesome feat through a buffet line. You have mastered the art of being not only a super-duper eater but also can carry on an excellent continuous conversation with your meal partners. I have yet to master that technique. I tend to talk too much and not eat enough to get my money’s worth at a buffet. Safe cruising to you, Lori, Faith, Mika and the rest of your family. Go Warriors ! Focus – Know your mission – Just do it !

  126. XxFaithxX October 2, 2008 1:27 pm

    A-House, RE: Kapolei OT.

He said he wants to get off the rock and will not consider UH at all.

    Sad isn’t it?

  127. Garret October 2, 2008 1:28 pm

The booing by Tennessee fans might have cost them a highly rated QB. This is relevant to a discussion we had a week or so ago…the QB was committed to Tennessee but attended the game with his family and promptly decommitted and is now going to go to Stanford.

The booing began even before Jonathan Crompton’s final pass of the first half settled in the hands of Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins on Sept. 20. Neyland Stadium, home to some of the nation’s most passionate fans, had become the site of a referendum on the future of the Tennessee football program, and as the Volunteers stumbled to a 30-6 loss, some of those fans voted with their lungs.

In the stands sat several dozen recruits who came to see the spectacle and pageantry of the game that, until a few years ago, almost annually determined who would win the SEC’s eastern division. That group included a pair of players committed to Tennessee, Upland, Calif., quarterback Josh Nunes and Tampa, Fla., tailback Jarvis Giles. Within days, Nunes reopened his recruitment. Not long after, he joined the monster recruiting class Jim Harbaugh is putting together at Stanford. Nunes said then and in an interview Tuesday that the boos had no influence on his decision. Giles, also interviewed Tuesday, believes the boos had to have affected Nunes, who attended the game with his family.

“I think the boos scared Nunes away,” said Giles, who remains committed to the Vols. “His dad was real hot about that.”

  128. Garret October 2, 2008 1:29 pm

Even if the boos played no conscious role in Nunes’ choice, they couldn’t have helped Tennessee’s case. A loud volley of boos for the home team has to make recruits wonder if the fans truly support the team. Therein lies the dilemma for the college football fan. In the case of football factories such as Tennessee, most season-ticket holders make serious investments of money and time to support the team they love. But unlike an NFL fan, who can unleash a torrent of boos with no fear of scaring away potential free agents, the college fan voices his frustration at the risk of pushing away the very recruits who might turn around his team’s fortunes.

  129. Garret October 2, 2008 1:30 pm

Another highly rated recruit who is committed to Tennessee said that the booing by the fans bothered him.

Tennessee commit Giles said he loves the school and its coaching staff, but he also had questions after the Florida game. “The boos kind of scare me,” he said. “I don’t want the fans to boo me.” Giles said he was somewhat reassured after reading on the Internet that the fans were booing the decisions of the coaches and not the players themselves. Still, he couldn’t help but notice that the booing reached its loudest points after mistakes by quarterback Crompton and tailback Arian Foster. Giles has resolved not to worry about that, though. “I’m going to do my thing,” he said. “I’m going to give 110 percent so [the booing] doesn’t happen to me.”

  130. Garret October 2, 2008 1:35 pm

    Mrs. A-House,

Thank you very much for the well wishes. I try to do more listening than talking during cattle calls because everyone else has such interesting things to say…and because I’m trying to eat! I’ve been working out every day for months so the extra food shouldn’t have too bad an effect on me.

Thankfully Lori and I don’t get seasick. I hope that my kids are okay too–I’m guessing they will be fine since they like amusement park rides that spin them around.

  131. Garret October 2, 2008 1:38 pm

    Al,

I agree that the Warriors need to win in the intangible area. That was one reason why I was so disturbed about the special teams mistakes in the first 3 games, as missed assignments and other mistakes hurt the team. I was very glad to see that the cover units improved significantly vs. SJSU, and hope that they do well against Fresno State (they have dangerous returners) and that the return units get to the level that they were last year.

  132. XxFaithxX October 2, 2008 1:39 pm

My bad about the OT pride talked about…thought he was talking about the *4* star one….the other, don’t know about him.

  133. al October 2, 2008 1:40 pm

    shot in the dark……

could one jc olineman be the kid from alaska whom we spoke to two years ago when he was 6’5″/260lbs and his since grown another 3″ and 40 lbs and has added a 3rd star? (3 for 2)

and is the other this 6’5″/300 4star dude out of santa ana who once was offered at fsu? (3 for 3)

  134. ryan October 2, 2008 1:42 pm

Is one of the JC O-lineman Eric Sproal? His a big strong OL with 3 years to play 3.

  135. Garret October 2, 2008 1:42 pm

Two JC OL recruits would be *exactly* the right use of some of the scholarships that are left!

  136. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 1:43 pm

    Mrs. A-House,

Absolutely right you are, that’s exactly what I meant by reaching for the stars and not coming down with mud on your hands.

One game at a time is always the best policy, but there still should be goals for persuit and purpose.

    Al,

I think we are not outdone by talent vs most of our opponents, we have plenty of it. Even against Florida we have shown that we CAN hold our own. We just have a few offensive parts not yet working properly, especially at QB and that can easily foul up the entire engine. Once that is fixed, I’ll take my chances again against anybody.

  137. al October 2, 2008 1:44 pm

two jc olineman who can play would surely boost the roster next year.

and add to that a couple of hs oline dudes.

  138. chawan_cut October 2, 2008 1:46 pm

    Dammit!
    I’m stuck way out here!
    Dammit!

  139. al October 2, 2008 1:50 pm

garret…….another area i believe we need to focus on is punt and kickoff returns. i would put cal lee in charge of that. at st. louis he implemented a unique return system based upon reading the downfield coverage early. sure they had the george ornellas’, kealohas, and welch’s to run em back but those were planned efforts which they spent a good amount of time practicing and it paid off.

  140. al October 2, 2008 1:50 pm

    way out where ccut?

  141. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 1:52 pm

Two big O-Line men would be just what the Doctor ordered. Hope we get them. Keep going Big Mack, you’re doing great in that area, you might end up as Hawaiis greatest recruiter down the line.

that is how we make a difference.

JC linemen may not be ready for D1, so hopefully its someone with 3 years to play 2…Hisatake and Leatigaga came in with lots of hype but they haven’t played much in 2 years, injury may be an issue but I don’t know if this is a fact…if these 2 had 3 for 2, they would probably see action next year their third year at UH…better to go after HS lineman, like JJ once said, takes time to develop linemen….

  151. A-House October 2, 2008 2:04 pm

    Hoohiki:

After my Alaska fishing trip, I am totally hooked on the “patch-behind-the ear” solution to my motion sickness on water.

Each patch last for 3 days and I put first one on before my plane ride from Hawaii to Anchorage. Unfortunately, this one got a little dislodged after taking a bath Sunday and about half was on the ear. Thus, the first day I was a little woosy, but had a hankering for food and kept eating the red ginger strips when the pomp got queasy.

Second patch was put on correctly and I had absolutely no problems with motion on Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Friday.

Two patches cost about $30, but well worth it. Smile, eat, talk story, joke, etc on boat while hooking a lot of fish.

    How’s that, Mrs A-House?

    Hi Mrs. A-House!

jm2375 is a pesky female super-lurker from your neck-of-the-woods. She can normally be found disrupting the normal order of things inside the Tsaiko Playhouse.

She readily admits to jumping on the furniture with her shoes on and drinking milk straight outta da carton. She is obviously a fan of cartoon character “pig-pen” out of the Peanutssyndication by the late Charles Schultz.

    XxFaithxX:

Good point and hope UH recruiting make it a point to cover this at the first contact.

A prolonged “learning curve” can make that recruit not fit the Warrior system.

Are coaches/recruiters allowed to talk to former coaches, teachers, friends, etc regarding a player to pre-determine if he/she would make a good fit for Hawaii? A 4-5 star individual may want to become a Warrior, but limitations may keep coaches away. Always study the capabilities and limitations or recruits and opponents to take advantage of their weaknesses. That’s what I learned in the military including Generals to pick up on any tendencies which may be detrimental to the enemy/other side.

  158. al October 2, 2008 2:17 pm

funny, that you mention them. they were a part of our “lunch” discussion yesterday.

  167. al October 2, 2008 2:35 pm

all recruits are evaluated using several criteria

the obvious is the measurables and ability.

the academic success is first and foremost. they need to be able to enroll first and then maintain grades/graduation progress.

for jc guys they do look first at those who can come in by december. it is like having an extra grayshirt for the spring.

we have had our difficulties with other late qualifiers in the past, usually that is also why some are still available because of the academic uncertainty.

another problem/hurdle for jc transfers/recruits is that our university is very “manini” when it come to accepting transferrable credits. it has been this way for over forty years that i know of. in fact, so stringent are we that classes that can transfer to UCLA, cal, etc may not be transferrable here….go figure.

oh, it didn’t help that we had a compliance guy who was either too afraid of his own shadow or did not know the rules of compliance/eligibility all this coupled with the fact that no one knew what he did all day.

    HOOKINI/MRS A-HOUSE.

When I was a kid and going to the Mainland on the old Matsonia, I was terribly seasick to the point where I told my Mother not to ship my body back to Hawaii as I wouldn’t be able to take the trip dead or alive.

A couple of trips later, I was OK.

When I go on cruises, I usually take an anti-vert (bonamine, dramamine etc – I use meclizine HCL) about 6 hours before I even board the ship and maybe the first day or so afterwards. And if there is the expectation of rough seas, I will pop one. The meclizine does not make me drowsy or loggy.

Lois and I have been on eight or nine cruises. OTH river cruises are nice and calm.

    Hope this may help!

  169. lab rat October 2, 2008 2:36 pm

Princess if you are going to play with Natasha don’t forget to wear your helmet and pads. And pain pills too….

  170. Ralph October 2, 2008 2:38 pm

Al if he is a red shirt junior and not playing, then next year will be Hisatake’s only year of eligibility left, right….having him play only one year is not a good investment in developing a o lineman, especially if he enrolled for 3 years at UH…the season is still young, he may get some PT before the season is over.Leatigaga was injured last year, so that would be his red shirt year regardless if was a typical RS or a medical one. So he is a junior RS this year and not playing, then next year is final year of eligibility…confirmation ST

I recall that some of the players were not comfortable with the new UA shoes, due to lack of support. I wonder if that is contributing to it??

  173. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 2:46 pm

    Ralph,

It may have something to do with the fact that he switched from Defense to Offense and has only had 3 1/2 years exposure to football under his belt (including last year’s redshirt year). Anybody know if he’s even on the travel roster? If so, that means he’s on standby.

  176. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 2:53 pm

hmmm did someone post this article, yet?

    Exerpt from the National Handicapper

Hawaii lost 20-17 to San Jose State, a late night (early morning, for most) result that was close enough to the spread to not raise any eyebrows. But we certainly noticed. Hawaii led 18-11 in first downs, 356-237 in total offense, and a commanding edge of 5.5 yards per play vs. only 3.5 allowed. But the Warriors were -6 in turnovers. Yet despite that turnover gap, the game was tied until a late Spartan FG won it. To be -6 in turnovers and still be tied with 2:00 remaining is actually quite an achievement, and it is the kind of thing that the markets can miss.

So what do we have going forward? An under-valued team, and excellent timing to use them. Let’s look at the value first. Two years ago Hawaii was favored by -4 on this field, and won 68-37. Then LY the Warriors were -18 at home, and won 37-30, after leading 37-16 in the fourth quarter. Yes, things have changed. They are weaker and the Bulldogs are a bit better. But to go from -18 at home LY to +22.5 on the road is a staggering adjustment.

hisatake, remember came in as a highly touted defensive tackle. jj had him swith over to offense.

i really thought that they would switch hisatake back to defense when those injuries started mounting at dt. still could happen with rocky out.

    2008 Warrior record ( 1 – 3 ):

Actually not bad for playing, last year, IMHO, the #1 Georgia Bulldogs, then start the year at Florida ranked #5, then traveling to Corvallis to play O State, a pre-season # 17 or 19, and finally losing to San Jose.

Last game was very winable, but things happen.

Aren’t there height limitations involved for military service?

Back home from work and will put my paddles in discussing.. SEA-SICKNESS

I can get sea sick on vessels over 50 – 500 feet long. In the under 50 foot category, I am either driving, too excited, or taking on water and fearing for my life too much to get sea sick. In the medium size vessels I am usually bored to confined inside and the movement is amplified. If I try to amuse myself with reading, computers, cards, or anything requiring concentration–I get woozy.

Modern cruise ships (800 -1,200 feet) are just too large to have significant motion unless you are in a storm or gale force winds and 12+ foot seas…then it gets a bumpy and you could lose your balance walking (unless you know how–aka “sea legs”). This is rare– but you can never tell about the weather when you are booking your cruise months in advance.

On a cruise ship (like me on a medium vessel)– don’t read books — unlike the stereotypical picture– anything that takes concentration (reading, cards, blogging, writing, bead and craft workshops, watching movies) causes you to focus on one thing and your brain is rockin’ trying to steady your focus. Yes, people feel sea sick sometimes coming out of the ship’s movie theatre on a bumpy day. Maybe that’s why many say that sea-sickness is mostly in your mind.

So what to do on a ship? Eat, walk/jog on the tracks, float in the pool, sit in the hot tubs (my favorite), eat, join in the workshops that don’t require hand-eye concentration, join in many Cruise Director activities, go to the casino, eat, go to the nightclubs for shows, go to the theatre for shows, eat, talk story with all the friends you will make, and eat.

Pills (e.g. Meclizine) are given free at the ship’s 24-hour reception counter. Patch requires doctor prescription, I think. Also available at the ship hospital. The ship has many doctors and many treatments for sea sickness (gotta pay Dr. visit fee)–but guaranteed relief if needed.

A cruise ship is a very friendly place–almost like a Tsai-ko activity. Most will be too busy to notice any movement until they concentrate. Take a free pill as Tom Mui suggests–usually sufficient in most cases. 🙂

Now to find an inexpensive blog cruise… 😐

    Hello, ST and Tsai-ko Ohana!

Thanks Jason for stopping by Ka Leo today. I apologize for not being able to chat longer. If you couldn’t tell, the sports editor found someone’s phone and I was trying to find its owner. Anyway, I hear they’re planning to run your story for Thursday. You’re gonna be famous!

If any one wants information about cruises, STEVEM is your man! Most cruise ships as he has said are fairly stable at sea. If the ship holds more than 900 passengers, it will be more than adequate and it won’t seem crowded and will usually be stable.

The longest trip we ever took was from Miami to Santiago which was about 5,000 miles – no problems at all.

Too bad we couldn’t bring our own Pupu’s. Ours are always so much better than anywhere or anyone else can provide. We should’ve told Murph that we would serve them and he pay us back in free beer!

So what you need ride, or you going catch the Light Rail?

I just set my DVR to record the UH vs. Fresno State game via ESPN GamePlan! The only bad thing about that is that I won’t get to watch the game until Thursday…but at least I know I’ll be able to watch it when I get back.

  238. Kekoa October 2, 2008 9:08 pm

Ralph ~ Well, there’s the pre-game show right? Then, the game starts at 1600 Hrs. I’m leaving the ceded lands at about 1500. I want to be sure I’m there in time to watch Ryan Mouton run the kickoff back 82 yards to the dog pound!

Then slam dunk it into their doggie dish and take the Chicken Chit penalty for excessive celebration! Woo Hoo! Some things are still worth doing to get the team fired up!

  239. Garret October 2, 2008 9:08 pm

Interesting how the contractor that our government pays to protect our nuclear facilities can say that having a guard talk for 1000 minutes a month on his cell phone to a woman he’s having an affair with poses no risk to security. Of course, they actually said earlier that having security guards sleeping while on duty posed no risk for nuclear security…

Long Beach Poly (where 2 recent UH commits play) has an amazing win streak in conference play!

Senior captains Trevor Erno, Talia Crichton, Aaron Aviles and Nick Cruz make up the fearsome foursome of the Lakewood High football defense that hopes to end Poly’s 73-game Moore League win streak when the Lancers host Poly tonight at 7 p.m.

Poly hasn’t suffered a setback since 1994 and Lakewood’s last win over the Jackrabbits came some 25 years ago, but that doesn’t faze the Lancers leaders.

  248. Garret October 2, 2008 9:25 pm

The LA Times has another article about Long Beach Poly.

“In Long Beach, everyone grows up wanting to play for Poly,” said Jones, who covers the Oakland Raiders for the Sacramento Bee.

  249. FloridaTed October 2, 2008 9:30 pm

In the Fresno game it will be very important to keep our cool, not respond to their taunts and just keep playing with full intensity for 60 minutes.

They will come out with full intensity and the adrenaline flowing. If we weather their first onslaught, it will fizzle sooner or later. Too much adrenaline will wear off like a drug and actually makes you sluggish if you can’t keep pumping it. Same thing if we don’t respond to taunting, it will make them feel weird and takes more emotion out of them.
Staying at least close in the first half is key.

Remember, they’ve been traveling also, there won’t be an advantage there. They are tired, how much will show in the second half. We must play very smart, cool calm and collected, with cold fury.

Off course, if we turn the ball over six times again, we’re toast. But this game is winnable, as long as our offense plays half way decent.

  250. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 9:39 pm

Older drivers and video games.. hmmmm.. you think maybe they believe it helps to maintain higher levels of alertness, faster response times and greater peripheral awareness?

  251. madeinhawaii October 2, 2008 9:43 pm

Mac made a great point in his Call the Coach session where he said something about needing to study the game tapes to see if the interceptions are happening with the same plays and if so, we need to stop running those plays.

These are readily addressable things that will help to eliminate turnovers and get this team back on track.

I’m looking forward to an exciting game this weekend with our Warriors surprising themselves and handily coming out on top.

  252. expat October 2, 2008 9:50 pm

I just finished watching the Boise State – La Tech game off Tivo. One of the most impressive things about Boise State’s run has been that they have done it with four head coaches – Nutt, Koetter, Hawkins, and Petersen since they jumped up. Four head coaches in 11 years and they have had pretty amazing success.

Obviously they have some wins under their belt so far this year and they totally dominated La Tech. QB Moore is really pretty good and plays much older than a RS Frosh. As I said earlier in the season he is going to be a thorn in our side for years. He is playing *much* better than any of our QBs despite less experience.

For all that there are some big chinks in their armor, at least so far. Their running game is not working right now. They are playing smart as a team, but smart doesn’t block up front. Their D looks pretty capable although prone to making some mistakes.

Thanks, A-house, Mrs. A-house, tommui, SteveM, jm2375 for all your suggestions on floating vessels and seasickness. Unfortunately, I’m so sensitive to medications that when I take motion-sickness meds, I knock-out out quickly and for an extended period of time. Once, my friends and I flew on a small piper plane from Honolulu to Molokai to go diving for tako. I was afraid I would get sick so I took Dramamine in the plane before getting airborne, and as soon as the med touched my tongue I was out. The next thing I knew, I woke up on the beach of a deserted island.

Koakane, looking forward to seeing you guys on Saturday.

  274. koakane™ October 2, 2008 11:37 pm

Hoohiki, I’m with you. Even the smell of diesel exhaust makes me nauseated. I took Dramamine once in Europe on a long trip on many airplanes and laughed my head off for hours… it’s like a strong drug for me. I tried sea bands for awhile but they don’t work any more either.
    No supahferry for me!

Back after a really long day in the trenches:

Garret: Sorry you won’t be able to eat desserts for me. Since I am really not into vegetables or fresh fruits, about the only thing left at a buffet I can eat are the cheeses, eggs, tofu, starches, breads, and desserts.I load up my plate with the last and then, if there’s any room, will get some of the others.

NA KOA LUNCHEON AND CALL THE COACH SHOW:

Will there be a Na Koa Luncheon this Monday? I thought that there weren’t any immediately following away games. SteveM has it listed, but is it happening?

I was driving around this afternoon switching between the debate and 1420 and caught an ad for the Call the Coach Show. They announced it as being on Wednesday, October 8, and not on the regular Tuesday.. Please note that in your calendars.

DrDoc and I will use the event to celebrate our natales -7 & 9 – since we always split the diff.

Other nearby parking for Murphy’s – the public parking at the corner of Bethel/Nimitz/Queen – $3 max for the entire day on weekends. It’s about a block away from Murphy’s

    Off to watch some punditry.

  278. SteveM October 3, 2008 12:12 am

Liz — the smell of diesel exhaust makes most people get headaches or feel nauseous. Jet-kerosene exhaust too. I’m affected. I’ve been around diesel boats and the harbor most of my life (pre-2000) and no such smells are found on cruise ships…well maybe a little bunker C on rare atmospheric conditions and diesel from the tender boats when the ship is in “anchorage”. 🙂

Hoohiki and LizKauai — have you tried the ginger preserves? The type you can usually find with the ling hing mui and crack seed… look tan or pale brown and “candied”. There is strong anecdotal evidence that it prevents motion sickness.

I don’t know. But mom and Peaches think so. Of course, Peaches forgot to buy or pack it on a cruise or two and never got seasick… 🙂
