No time to waste

In 2005, the last time the Warriors had a losing season, there was reason for optimism.
Colt Brennan, who would have two more seasons of eligibility, led the nation in touchdown passes that year. Slotbacks Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins were freshmen. Linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard also were freshmen. Linebacker Blaze Soares was prepared to join the team the following season, and Jason Rivers also would be back.
Those Warriors were young, and the future was filled with promise.
To be sure, this year’s team still could be successful. There’s certainly enough talent. But while this team is relatively inexperienced, especially on offense, it is not young. There are nine senior starters on defense — 11, if nickel defenders Jameel Dowling and Desmond Thomas are counted.
The offense has six senior starters.
The three specialists — kicker Dan Kelly, punter Tim Grasso and long-snapper Jake Ingram — are all in their final UH season.
This team is built for this season.
Which is why the bye week comes at a crucial time for the Warriors, who need to rest injuries and regain cohesion. This week, in effect, wil serve as a second training camp.
There is optimism for the future, but the stars of tomorrow are redshirts: Ryan Henry, Dustin Blount, Mike Tinoco, Steele Jantz, Paipai Falemalu, Geordon Hanohano, Josh Andrews, and all of those cornerbacks. Those are stories for another day.
For the Warriors, as George Allen once said, the future is now.

    Pomai . . .

    I’m glad that Mack had such a good recruiting class last year and has gotten so many quality commits already for the 2009 recruiting class. The Warriors will be fine in the long-term, and hopefully some things can be fixed in the short-term during the bye week.

    What I’m most worried about is the injuries. The OL has been hit hard, especially the left side. Tyler might be hurt, LWJ/Pilares are hurt, etc. The DL has done pretty well, but the D probably would be stronger for a full game if Fale, Blaze, etc., were healthy and they could rotate more like Mack did last season.

  21. wafan September 14, 2008 5:14 am

    Mr. Tsai . . .

    Thank you for the photos. We were sitting on the 2nd to the last section on the far right of “Ferd’s” head. It was fun watching the planes fly below us as they made their final approach to PDX.

    That is a beautiful stadium! It sure was not like that when I was going to school there. Then, it was more like a high school stadium on steriods — just the field and the bowl around the stadium (no upper deck). Sounds like they are planning to expand the stadium one of these days.

    I think I got a better tan yesterday than when I spent the four weeks in Hawai’i. But, Hawai’i was a lot more fun. Well, I suppose if the UH had won it would have been fun, too.

  22. Pomai September 14, 2008 5:16 am

    ST does Steele Jantz have the making of another Colt or at least close to it?

    Apology

    Sorry gang for my outbursts yesterday. Aunty Liz, Bulla, UHfan808, Pomai, and the rest of you, sorry just got really frustrated with the game. You know as well as I do though that I will never give up on our Warrior Boys. This is the team I’ve known to love since lil kid time and am very passionate about. What really ticked me off was unnecessary emails from random people making threats. I know I get a little carried away (should see me live at a game), but it’s all in the atmosphere of football. UHfan808 and Aunty Liz, no worry I will tone it down and try not to voice my explicit language on here. Anyway, I wasn’t leaving for good just had to take a break away from UH football for a moment. I think the Crest Toothpaste and cap full of Listerine have cleaned my potty mouth, sorry about that…

    Silky Voice of the Gorn:

    > but I do not want to criticize the coaches.

    Eh? Need to respectfully disagree. What is wrong with constructive criticism? If this was just a single game let down or they had lost the games playing competitively, I can see, but right now after three games, there are ongoing problems with just the basic fundamentals like catching the ball, blocking, and tackling. This is all coaching. It therefore isn’t surprising why there has been little improvement in key areas like special teams. Like I said the other week, coaches like Urban Meyer tend to judge how well coached teams are by their special teams play. The play calling is also suspect to the point where it is a rhythm killer for the offense and I believe that it is NOT entirely Ron Lee’s fault (shall see what the coach says about why they ran 3 straight run plays). This lack of team effort which includes the coaching staff is why all the games this season has been ugly. Even fans from some WAC rivals are wondering what is going on.

    One of the main reasons for hiring McMackin was for a smoother transition so that the dropoff would not be as drastic. Well obviously, that isn’t panning out very well because the results are speaking for themselves where every facet has dropped right off a cliff. I expected an offensive fall off where it would not be as efficient but not this much. The rhetoric of winning the WAC and going bowling makes for great sound bites but how about being realistic now. Heading into conference play, basic fundamentals should not be issues. If after three games, these things which are supposed to be addressed during spring, summer, and fall camps are still ongoing problems, how do you expect to fix this in two short weeks? It is like building a house, if the foundation is shakey, everything above it is going to come crashing down once the cracks occur. Having watched the games which LaTech (MSU and Kansas), Nevada (Missouri), Fresno (Rutgers and Wisconsin), and SJSU (Nebraska) have appeared in this year, Hawaii is going to have its hands full to repeat a WAC championship. They have bigger fish to fry at this point and cannot look that far ahead.

    I don’t have a problem if Hawaii loses games and does not achieve the goals they set out for this year so long as they played competitively for 4 quarters in every single game. They’ve been shooting themselves in the foot though and looking really bad which vindicates those who felt UH was a flash in the pan and that its success hinged on JJ. This kind of performance is also not going to help recruiting efforts. So I’m sorry, but the coaches do need to be criticized because the lack of onfield performance, focus, and execution are NOT entirely the players fault.

    Nice, took the words right out of my mouth

When Silky Voice of the Gorn posted the following, I had to bring myself to reality and not expect miracles to happen. I have faith like everyone else that our Warrior Boys can bounce back and have a successful season regardless of our shortfalls at the moment…I BELIEVE!!!

    So I’ve been reading up on some Washington Redskins fan blogs and websites and I have the feeling they are getting real restless of there QB situation. Many feel Campbell will be gone by seasons end if not moved into a backup role behind guess who…bruddah Colt. Many feel if Campbell doesn’t get some W’s real soon, Colt should be given the keys to drive the offense. Even the players such as Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, and veteran Santana Moss have voiced there opinions about Colt…all good things. I know many don’t want him thrown into the fire and end up a bust, but Colt is not your typical QB. He is a Pro-Bowl caliber QB, I guarantee he’ll be playing in Aloha Stadium again in a couple years.

  36. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 6:16 am

    Injuries going happen in such a physical sport, but das why the next guys in line cannot get discouraged and need to play as if they were a starter themselves, never know when your number will be called. Granted game situation is different than practice, but gotta practice how you play. Funaki had to figure that out quick, now the rest of the team needs to follow.

    LWJ and Libre, auwe should have waited… We got Pilares and um what happen to Rego??? Anyway, maybe the boys need some spiritual remedies too, so they can heal there injuries and the team in general!

    BHF2,

    Howzit, great video das how our boys need to be… focused, practice, and then come game time, leave it all on the field…

    These first 3 games have been somewhat disheartening not only for the players but the fans as well. Seems like the team is missing the “Believe” factor and giving up on themselves too quickly. The Seniors need to step up and motivate with the coaches…the rest of the team. How you expect your team to play at a high level when you yourself no can?

    Quarterbacks:

    I think at this point of the season we know that Tyler Graunke is our starter regardless of this past game performance. Inoke is our #2 and then the JC’s. Tyler is now injured and Funaki moves up, no problem. What I scratch my head about though is how the heck did Brent Raucsh go from #1 to Casper the friendly ghost so fast? I would have to agree with Florida Ted that the JC’s need some game time experience. Maybe play Funaki a series or two and then let the JC’s get time in blowout games. Seems like Rausch and Alexander went from starters to bench riders. I know they don’t have the experience yet in the system but from these past games it looks like no one does…IMO. Regardless of the play calling the QB’s need to execute! Graunke is gone after this and next year we will need Rausch and Alexander…

    Come on our Warriors, Heal quickly, get back on the path that your capable of achieving, and get ready for San Jose. There gonna be in your hale and want revenge from last season.

    One question. It’s 3rd and 1 in the early series. Why on earth would Hawaii use the shotgun formation for a handoff up the middle? This is still bugging me on the play call.
    Instead of Graunke keeping and pushing over the line for a 1st down, which he is easily capable of, they decide to make it a 3rd and 6 with the shotgun.

    This was the 1st of those 5 big plays that changed the course of the game.

    Men!! After our Warriors’ loss last night, I really needed a pick me upper from the Wahine. I watched a little bit of the first and 1/2 of the second set when I decided I had enough frustration and let down for the day so I left my husband watching the game by himself and giving me updates. It was the 3rd set and he told me it was over. I went to sleep thinking both our teams lost today
    This morning when I started my routine of reading the paper, I noticed the headline that said “Hawaii Tops Washington”. Before reading the article, I literally blamed the Adveriser for making such an inadvertant error. But as I read further, realizing they won, I woke my husband from his slumber admonishing him for cheating me out of an emotional high! Men!!
    Good morning folks!! Does anyone know if the game will be replayed since I missed it? Hmph!!

    Gorn,
    Thanks for the kick in da okole for da coaches.

    Pauoa Boy,

    Before looking at the closeup on the TV, My guess is that OSU called on the mana. It may not be so much that the Warriors lost than the Beavers won.

    I do know that we scored while I was in the restroom. A fact that was noticed by my seatmates. I was discreetly invited to revisit that spot several times. But I knew that once gone, I would have difficulty reclimbing the “stairway to heaven” back to my seat. 😆

    Good morning to Tsai-kos here and elsewhere. What an awesome finish to a somewhat disappointing day of Warrior FB. One snap and clear and off we went to the VB game. The wahine were terrific and as you probably gathered from sj’s post 493 we did not get the entire 5 sets recorded. Would greatly appreciate a copy of the match if anyone got the entire match and post game award ceremony. We ended up with a slightly abbreviated version of the epic match. Hopefully K-5 will do another replay but just in case they don’t we would like to cover all bases.

    da receivers and da qbs gotta work mo bettah on dare timing and da routes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. Jason September 14, 2008 8:10 am

    Pauoa Boy: I don’t think you can read too much to the fact that Rausch went from #1 to #4. I thought Rausch looked the best amongst the three QBs before he got hurt, and that he was rightfully #1. But after the injury, both his and Alexander’s struggles against Florida, and the emergence of Tyler as a real contender at QB, both of the JC guys got pushed back.

    I think if Tyler were completely cut from the team, then it would have been Rausch’s job to lose (if he were healthy). That’s what I would have liked, at least — give the guy this year to grow into the offense, so that he can have two years to play quality football, like Colt had. Or at least give him the Florida game, see what he can do when thrown into the fire. But then Rausch got hurt, so it was Alexander thrown in to sink or swim.

    Since Tyler’s here, though, the coaches can make ‘Inoke the #2 and let the JC guys sit. So in that sense, it would be best to make Alexander the #3, cause he’s a junior, and Rausch is a sophomore.

    As for not putting in Rausch or Alexander — you know, I thought about that too, but then I figured, we don’t know the extent of Tyler’s injury. It might be better to give ‘Inoke the playing time, get him ready for San Jose State and the WAC season. The only thing that scares me is him getting hurt, cause he likes to run around like crazy (and he doesn’t protect himself or the ball well when he’s moving around). Should he and Tyler be out, then we’ve got issues.

  55. d1島 September 14, 2008 8:10 am

    al,

    Answering from last night re: Higgins

    He played really well. Good decisions, threw the ball good.

    IMHO Coach Ane might want to keep Manti on the edge; he can wreak havoc from there and force things in the offensive backfield versus playing him at MLB where he’s running down stuff on his side of the line of scrimmage. At the start of the game when I saw him line-up in the middle and 8 yards off the line; I felt a lot better about SL’s chances.

  56. LiLMermaid September 14, 2008 8:33 am

    Good morning Tsaikos-land!

    Still sad about yesterday’s loss to OSU but I am confident our Warriors will get it together by the next game. Good thing they have a bye week.

    BTW does anyone know if the Redskins-Saints game is on tv?

  57. FloridaTed September 14, 2008 8:36 am

    A good day to all Tsaikos.

    The storm clouds have moved on, the sun is shining and we’re still alive. The sky, apparently, has not fallen and there is only one thing to say,

    REALITY SUCKS!!!!

    Back to the drawing boards for our Warriors, with the unrealistic dream of a 07 repeat out of the way, I will be happy with steady and sustained improvement from now on. Tylers injury sounds serious and explains a lot, but we MUST develop the JC’s more, unfortunately, Funaki is not suited for this offense.

    This Swan Lake production is not stage worthy yet for sure, the dancers (players) are still tripping over the their own feet and the choreographers (coaches) seem to have lost their music and script.

    What troubles me somewhat is that the Warriors looked like the road teams of old, but in football, especially on the road, momentum is like an avalanche, once it goes against you, it’ll bury you, just look at UCLA, does anybody really think they’re that bad or BYU is that great? No, they just got the momentum and steam rolled from there. We had momentum at first, but gave gave it right back to OSU and that was it.

    The next two weeks will let us know what these coaches and players are made of. You show your meddle when the chips are down. I will hold my breath until the SanJose game. I sure hope that Hawaii’s fickle fans will not abandon the team already and show up strong for the next game.

    Let’s all hang in there. We are fully realizing now how great Colt and the dread heads were, but not so in their first year. Off course, the team is full of Seniors and for them, the future is now. I’m far from giving up on the team.

  58. FloridaTed September 14, 2008 8:38 am

    Oops, forgot to mention that the last paragraph was borrowed from the Tsai-Meisters blog above. I agree with every word therein.

  59. diesel September 14, 2008 8:40 am

    PB,

    Do you have the link to Cooley, Fred Davis, and others that voiced their opinion about Colt leading the offense?

    If that’s true then the Skins are done for the season having a mutiny on the ship. Not a good place to be for either quarterback and the head coach. Lets say Colt does get the nod and doesn’t perform well in 2 or 3 games. Will the Skins revolt against him like they did against Campbell? I’m sure that’ll be in the back of his mind thus creating more pressure.

    As much as I am a fan of Colt I’d like to see him just take a year with a clipboard. Even if its a losing season for the Skins. But if Campbell and Collins go down. That will be another story.

    So if you could post a link to your findings of how the Skins key players are voicing their opinion of Colt being the starter I’d greatly appreciate it. 🙂

  60. addahknowjoe September 14, 2008 9:13 am

    The one thing above all else this team needs to work on simply is attitude. Right now, from top to bottom, the team’s swagger and mindset is still based on last years accomplishments. The team needs to let go of last year. Find and establish their own identity. Make their own mark.

    Admittedly, we’re all just as guilty. When we see or meet the boys and coaching staff, we shower them with accolades based on last years success. The boys are constantly reminded to compare themselves to last year’s team in everything they do. From every throw to every tackle they’re asked, “was that as good as last year?” It can be impossible to achieve and demoralizing at times. This team needs room to grow and find their own identity. Make their own mark. We need to give them that room with positive tough love and support.

    Right now, there’s very little, physically, the boys need nor can do to improve their play. Just maintain what they’ve worked so hard for in the off season. The only two body areas that needs work is the jello between their ears and that thumping muscle in their chests. They gotta:

    -Purge that gray matter of last year.
    -Never stop being hungry for more knowledge.
    -Believe, trust and have faith in one other.

    Meantime, the coaching staff need to establish a standard of Warrior football where we’re not yearning for yesteryears players and their play but, looking forward to reloading and keeping the machine rolling, year after year, after year, after year…

    Hey gang. As James pointed out to me yesterday, 11-2 is still a hell of season to have!

    7down. 8UP!

    NO GIVE UP!!

    GET BACK UP!!!

    morning gang

    gotta luv the vball wahines. dem girls battle and a deserved that victory ova da dogs of UW’b. cshoji has dem playing like the teams of old. they are scrappy, hustle all ova and dig everything. must be very frustrating to have a team like UH pick up all your kills. congrats again to the wahines job well done. 😀

    afta yesterday’s fball I don’t really know what to say. 😳 I have mixed feelings, frustration, anger 👿 and most certainly disappointment. Still believe we could have beaten that Oregon team. I no like say any thing cause still steaming so foa now need time to cool down then put my thoughts into a more objective critique. 😕

    any one for a coffee discusssion hour?

  62. Stretch September 14, 2008 9:39 am

    good morning tsaikos from qwest field. good thing I never throw away the oxygen tank from yesterday. these seats are higher than yesterday.

    wafan – left portland at 730 and made it to the hotel at 10. not too bad w/ no traffic. I think I borrowed a-sports foot while driving here… hahaha

    see everyone later, time to watch g-nalo & sleez cry watching their 49ers play.

  63. lab rat September 14, 2008 9:53 am

    I watched the USC game as well as the OSU game and I noticed that all of their olinemen wore knee braces.

    I thought Veikune and Josh Leonard had a really good game. I think David needs to get lower near the goal line though. He got blown backwards by that little bowling ball. This also happened to him in the Florida game.

    I hope UH gets one of the big runningbacks back to block. David Farmer comes to my mind. Too bad they did not give Rego more of a shot early on. He seems to be the most aggressive blocker of the present group. This is why I miss Mauia so much.

  64. whitey September 14, 2008 9:54 am

    Good morning Tsaikos. I don’t understand if watching the game as a fan is the same game the coaches are watching. I guess that when you are coaching, you don’t like to see the bad things, so you neglect it during the game and by the time you realize it, too late. IMHO, David V and Sol played a very good game on defense, Libre is one helluva rb w/guts and purpose, and Adam L should be given more opportunities to rush, cause he is awesome. On the other side, I didn’t know that tackling today meant grabbing above the waist and dancing with the opposition. I thought that basic tackling was wrapping both arms around the legs to prevent any further movement. I don’t know who is responsible to teach tackling, but on this issue, the warriors sucks. One other thing, “we will be going under center to keep the defense honest”. Only one time did they go under and that was for a qb sneak. Where’s the under center offense??????

    100th Bn charge, Go For Broke, was with extreme emotion when they saved the “Lost Battalion” in France.

    On the other hand, Custer lost his 7th Cav because of stuborness, excess pride, and emotion.

    Like all Tsaikos, yesterday was really a downer, but the skies cleared today in Hawaii and the sun is out.

    Good morning everyone!

    Addahknowjoe has a point in comment #60. I too have last year’s expectations. I expect the offense to march down the field. Score 47+ points. 3rd and 18? No problem. But I am confident that Mac and the team will emerge in two weeks and stamp it’s unique identity on the season.

    A-joe is right– we have the talent and the players…and I have great confidence in Mac and the coaches. Sept. 27 against Dick Tomey’s SJSU is gonna be epic!

  69. Buffoman September 14, 2008 10:11 am

    The fact of the matter may just be that we somehow miscalculated when looking at the Q-back talent. Not taking anything away from the two jc folks, but just think about it. If they were really hot prospects, someone would have taken them, as remember, we had a late start.

    That being said, maybe we start now to cultivate the possibility of making offers to potential Qback studs, that others may want in the position with the very, very real prospect of them starting as freshmen, if they are as good as the rating systems say they are. Do the JJ and go after several. Remember that there were also two big Q-back fellows that were brought in by JJ who had cannon arms, tall, big guys, but they never panned out.

    The other thing we need to do is really go and get some very large, agile, somewhat mean gentlemen who could help on the o-line. We simply need depth there.

    We may not burn it up this year, but we need to support coach Mac and start now to really make a push to fill real needs for next year and beyond.

  73. whitey September 14, 2008 10:21 am

    buffoman, great thinking, but to take it a step further, put all the offensive and defensive lineman on the same yoga program as Michael Strahan. These kids have put on weight, but did not strengthen the basic foundation, ankles, knees (especially this), and hips. Somebody mentioned about the yoga program that the NY Giants used and UH trainers should research this and possibly use it for our program. If you take any martial arts, you build from the bottom up and not top down. I would rather see the players able to “full squat” 150-200#, then to bench press 400#.

  74. Bulla September 14, 2008 10:23 am

    al,

    ditto to d1, Higgins was very impressive. great team win for SL, puns……nice buildings, nice track team, nice SI article, but this is football.

    regarding UH, i remember saying that if we could go 7-5 it would be a good 1st season for coach Mac and company. boy did the arrows start flying……at this point, we need to regroup, prepare for battle, and never give up. we can only control what we can control….lessen the mistakes and capitalize on the opportunities…

    have a good sunday gang!

    “Be still sad heart and cease repining
    Behind the cloud is the sun still shining.
    Thy fate is the common fate of all,
    Into each life some rain must fall.”

    I committed that phrase to memory almost 45 years ago. The optimist in me always felt that there should be another couple of lines that spoke of rain that grows dreams…or something like that. Maybe it’s just best left alone for others to interpret as they want/need.

    I applaud PB and others like him for their passion (that’s probably most everyone on the blog). That was me not too many years ago.

    What I really like about you, Pauoa Boy, is that rare quality to calm down, man up and make things pono. Surprisingly, not many people can do that. I think of it as a leadership quality…that stuff that comes from the inside that makes good stuff happen on the outside. I figured you had it…now I KNOW you do. Thank you for being a Tsaiko.

    I agree with the sentiments that say people should be able to vent and express criticism…with the caveat that we have chosen to be a family place where we include women and young’uns. We are not alone when we write in our tiny comment box.

    To remind us that all was not lost yesterday, the Lord has sent us a most perfect morning for us to enjoy…should we elect to do so. To all those living outside Hawaii…sorry, you’re on your own… 😀

  77. kama krab September 14, 2008 10:28 am

    Howzit all,

    Yesterday was a downer in more then one aspect. Yes the team did not play very well and to that I was very unhappy. Yes they did not show the Warrior mentality that we are all use to. But what hurt me the most is the lack of support that I had read throughout the blog and other publication on the HA site.

    I do understand the fustration that boiled over from the game because I was very fustrated myself but I do not understand how people can get so fustrated that they call for peoples jobs or call out certain units of the team. People need to realize that this is only the third game of the season and this season we have 13 games. We have more than enough time to make something of this season and of course as A-joe has stated early, “THIS IS NOT LAST YEARS TEAM”.

    So I call out to the people that make up the T-saikos and to the rest of the Warrior Nation with the sound of the conk shell, hang in there and continue to support the team. They will need us more than ever.

  78. Bulla September 14, 2008 10:29 am

    whitey,

    flexibility + strength = power

    personally, the bench press is not a good indicator of power for linemen. i’d go with the squat, the power clean, and maybe an incline bench at best. and i would focus on reps, minimum 225 lbs for 75+ reps, power clean 225 lbs for 20+ reps, incline bench 225 lbs. for 25+ reps. and if you need to go with a flat bench, do a close grip bench with the width of your grip the same as you would for a ‘punch’ block, 225 lbs. for 25+ reps.

    i used a ‘cross training’ program for ryan between the end of his junior year to senior year, and saw incredible strength gains…..to this day, that is the core for his training and streeeeeeeeeeeeeeetching all the time.

    just my thoughts, my 2 sense

  79. Bulla September 14, 2008 10:34 am

    kama,

    i agree with you 10000%….. what UH needs to realize, IMHO, is that they have to fight for every inch. last year is last year, it’s over, the time is now…..we have to fight for every inch, and build on that. back to basics, get our heads out of our behind and focus…..stop looking around and look in the mirror, that is where it begins.

    it’s gut check time, and this next game will determine the season…..period. strap up, man up, or shut up is a great line i always used…….nuf sed.

  80. chawan_cut September 14, 2008 10:36 am

    sorry i couldn’t join all of you at Ige’s yesterday. I was planning on heading down the hill with lefty/lakerj32 at halftime, but the game was already depressing, and i don’t know if it would’ve been any better to join a whole huge room of sad people.

  81. Bulla September 14, 2008 10:40 am

    whitey,

    squat 225 lbs for 75+ reps, not full squats, put the bench under your butt and exert upwards. no need for full squats in this day and age, do a leg press and minimize injuries.

  82. BG September 14, 2008 10:40 am

    For me, I’ll wait until the end of the year to look back and analyze the season. I need the whole season as a body of evidence before I make judgments…OK, so I’m slow…comes with old age.

    As an example, I point to the Wahine. Terrible year (relatively) last year and not looking real good early on this year. But Dave and the team has made adjustments and have improved tremendously. They could have easily fallen apart after the 2nd game, but, they didn’t. They grew. It took time.

    I hope the football team can learn too. They are capable of it. In any case, they’re MY team. Like the rest of us here, I’ll support them in as many ways that I can.

    Go Warriors!
    Go Wahine!

    Pauoa Boy: We recorded last night’s volleyball game (preceded by the football game) overnight and will check it out before mailing it tomorrow. However, I checked out the dvd I sent you last week before sending it out and had no problems. It was recorded on EP not standard because of the length of the game. Bizarre.

    We have two Panasonics and both record just fine – bought the second one about two months ago because I don’t watch anything live anymore. I don’t have the time to sit through all the commercials and am rarely home when a show is first aired. Will play it on the other machine to see if there are problems.

    DrDoc says to mail us back the dvd so we can check it out here. Maybe there’s something weird going on – if it plays here, then that will be an interesting puzzle to solve.

    We also saved last week’s Weber State game so I’ll re-record it for you.

    Myki – do you want me to make you a copy of the volleyball game as well?

  84. kama krab September 14, 2008 10:45 am

    Bulla,

    Right on man.

    It’s all about straping it up and hitting somebody. The essential basics of the game. Get nutz, go crazy, and most of all have fun. Take things one play at a time, which is another essential basic of the game. Do not over analyze what you have done the play before. Keep your heads up and know that the rest of your aunties, uncles, and cousins are behind you. Communicate aka talk story out there. Leave everything you have out on the field. Pick each other up. Just continue to believe and everything will end up working out in the end.

    To Warrior Nation get nutz, go crazy, the boys need you.

  85. Da Punchbowl Kid September 14, 2008 10:46 am

    Part of the satisfaction we experience as fans is watching our teams react to adversity and rise to the challenge. Sports wouldn’t be nearly as meaningful with out losses.

    Mr. Tsai, that is one of the best posts you have ever written, IMHO. History is NOW. Are we going to make it?

    I believe the Warriors will.

    Where in this for the long haul baby.

    11-2, 10-3, 9-4, 8-5, all of these would still be a pretty good season.

    It’s not over until the phat lady sings.

  87. al September 14, 2008 10:54 am

    d1, bulla thanks for the higgins’ capsules. he is only a junior and should grow another 2 inches and 25 lbs in a couple of years.

    i know this kid got the fire. we’ll keep tabs on him.

  88. whitey September 14, 2008 10:56 am

    bulla, thanks for the squat info, but was thinking that using a simple tool would probably help tremendously. Rope jumping, simple tool, great for leg workout and stamina. I don’t know if they use this for training, but I used it for swimmers and am amazed at how the kids develop good leg skills and become much more coordinated. Watch the boxers/ufc work out on the rope is a treat as they can do some incredible things and their knees never get injured.

  89. al September 14, 2008 10:59 am

    my take….

    after thinking this over a bit, i believe that our play calling with graunke in at qb was predicated by the fact that he only practiced a week or two. therefore, he may not have known all the plays. thus, they were limited in running stuff from the past and a few from the new.

    these two weeks preceding the wac opener were critical weeks for graunke and the team. however, it appears he will be out for a few weeks considering how “ballooned” his thumb and wrist were.

    i am certain that he got hurt early in the first half, which is why the plays were even further limited to short routes. did you notice the long stuff disappeared.

    any, that is my take on why we didn’t go under center, go long, etc.

    …nuff said.

  90. whitey September 14, 2008 11:00 am

    bulla, ok, can do plenty to help improve physical strength, but how do you imporve tackling. I watch some practice films and they show the defense grab above the waist and try to drive the offense back. What a waste of time. Grab the legs and dump em right there.

  91. lab rat September 14, 2008 11:01 am

    I can forget many things but I can not forget the stupid penalties. That personal foul after the first and only score on the extra point try. OSU ends up on their 49 yard line following the kickoff. What an instant momentum changer.

    Illegal procedure on punt return team. Not enough players on the line of scrimmage. Even I saw that one coming. UH should not be having alignment problems. This was their 3rd game.

    Have to go help with repairing the redwood gate and then do other chores. Have checked the dvd on the original recorder and nothing wrong.

    Myki – Excerpts from the post-game ceremony are included, but not the entire ceremony. Do you still want a copy of the entire game?

    Repeat from last night’s post: Again, we have two tickets to next Saturday’s Boise State game – cannot go because of a must-attend event elsewhere. Let me know if you want them and we’ll leave them at the Will Call box office window on Friday night.

    You can probably move closer down to the floor after the first set starts if the seats are too high up. We’re in the center but above the walkway on the side opposite where the teams sit.

    You have to be there to feel the electricity.

  96. whitey September 14, 2008 11:10 am

    al, well said. that is why i asked the first question, are we watching the same game as the coaches. grauke was hurt, his passes floated, way earlier in the 2 qtr, but the coaches kept him in the game. take him out, you got 3 other qbs on the team. the jc qbs aren’t saying anything, but i am sure that they are not happy since they were #1 and 2 at the beginning of the season and didn’t get to play. shades of JJ!!!!

  97. The Mad Cat September 14, 2008 11:14 am

    I agree 100% with addahknowjoe… this season has more to do putting the past behind and starting fresh (the J.J. years are DONE, it’s Mac’s show now). If there is one area of concern as I (and obviously a number of bloggers do too) is at QB. I did think early on in the game that Tyler was having trouble even holding the rock – much less putting any (normally characteristic) zip on it. With the pace of the game – it definitively affected his reads… and as he struggled, and the Warriors without their most effective RB’s… the team as a whole started to wallow and lost confidence. Given the importance of keeping the confidence level up – I’m sure keeping a struggling Tyler (I’m quite sure the Coaches saw it too) in was a wiser choice than to risk putting Inoke with a cold arm, at a key moment in the game. BUT… I still would of preferred to see the Warriors put in one of the two J.C.’s when it became apparent the game was in the fridge (midway thru the third period) for the Beavers… it would of been a good time to give one or both of them some snaps under real game conditions.

    The Warriors need to take a cue from a certain NFL team who was written off, at least for this particular week. Yup, the Redskins won and Campbell actually had a very nice game. We should have enough talent despite the injury problems, but focus and execution are huge problems for both players and arguably coaches (I defy anyone to tell me that three consecutive run plays in the _second_ offensive series is anywhere in the run-n-shoot playbook…as someone’s already said, I’ll wait and see for an explanation on that one).

    There is nothing better to ease the depression of yesterday’s football game than AN AMAZING EFFORT BY THE WAHINE LAST NIGHT!!!

    Saw SjMacro and Myki at the match (as usual 🙂 ).

    Amber Kaufmann was on another level with 10+, I lost count, Service ACES…

    I can’t remember the last time I was actually sweating at a volleyball match.

    I was a good way to end the day… then reality set in…

    I drove to the Windward side for a late night BBQ after the match. When I got to my destination, I sat on the deck of the waterfront property staring at the evening ocean lit by moonlight.

    The water was calm and the air was heavy, but cool. In the distance I could see the mountains and Mt. Olomana’s shape in the distance and it’s image enhanced by the heavy vog in the air.

    The evening scenery was surreal, and while I was surrounded by friends and conversation, my thoughts were on our Warriors and the season that still lay ahead.

    The evening ended too perfectly for comfort. It was too perfect considering the “imperfect” nature of the way our Warriors have been performing.

    Three games, twelve quarters of football, and only four quarters of reasonable success.

    I am not a coach, and I never suited up once, but I do know that team sports is a team effort and like a family, if something is not right, then they ALL need to come together to fix it.

    All the reps in the world is fine, but the intangibles are found within.

    Last night the Wahine showed me and thousands of UH fans at home and in the arena what can be acheived after coming together and cutting out the non-sense.

    Down by two games to an opponent ranked higher than you, bigger than you, etc… and they came away with a three game “sweep” to win the match.

    That, is a fine example of “one snap and clear”. Every game was NOT 25 points to win, it’s simply just “get one point, and then another, and then another”… that’s what they did.

    Again, there are A LOT of people on the football team that knows H-O-W to win. They were there in 2006 and they were there last season.

    Like ST said, the future is now, the future is theirs.

  116. Kazz September 14, 2008 12:43 pm

    Excuse me…. “Kaufman” not “Kaufmann”…

    But is the attendance figure in the paper today correct at 5,918???

    That MUST be a typo, if I were to guess it seemed like 7K+.

  117. BowsForever September 14, 2008 12:43 pm

    Amazing comeback for the Wahine. I heard a lot of the team was reeling from some kind of stomach bug too. Great win for Shoji and Co.

    Good to see you are back! Use Colgate Total and be careful of the mouthwash — got alcohol in there, too. HA!

    I can understand your intensity. Maybe we should try to figure out a way to sneak you on the team during those rough games. But, then you would have to be there quite a bit.

    As a Marine — take it like a man. Well, of course, you cannot retaliate against your wife. That would be insane and a suicide mission. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Best to avoid that situation at all costs!

    There has to be something else going on with the team and coaches we, as spectators, just are not seeing. But, it is very obvious they are not in sync and are not of one-mission; one-mind. I am sure they are having just as difficult time with their performance as we are watching/listening to it.

    But, I do believe in what Mack and staff are trying to accomplish. I believe they will eventually be successful.

    I have an observation to make from Saturday. As you know, Tsai-ko Chapters are formed when a long-time posting Tsai-ko puts out a Cattle Call in his home area and is attended by another Tsai-ko from other area (if there are not enough in the home area). Based on the esteemed WarriorMojo’s testimony…

    WarriorMojo:
    September 13th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
    To the Tsai-kos in Portland: Please tell me what Tsai-kos attended the Elmer’s cattle call Saturday morning.

    Steve, as far as I remember, the attendees were Stretch, Sleez, GNalo, Wafan, Izzy, Brew, Expat, Commited Road Warrior, BNG (or is it BNS? sorry, my friend), BNG’s wife (I assume) and son (I assume), LizK, LizK’s daughter, LizK’s daughter’ husband and LizK’s grandaughter.

    … it looks like Expat (poster since June 2007) is drafted eligible to be President of the Portland or Oregon Chapter. 🙂

    The Elmer’s cattle call was actually suggested by Expat and well attended. Even had the Tsai-ko Presidents of the W. Washington, No-Cal, and Kauai Chapters! Congratulations Expat! 😆

    We made sure Brew had two of the micro-crumbs since you generously made it specifically for him. He had tears in his eyes as he gratefully sampled the tasty morsel.

  146. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 3:49 pm

    Okay so I know most think that it’s harsh for us to call out certain Coaches and units…as in special teams but the fact is they need to be called out. I say this because they had all of spring camp, fall camp, practices and 3 quality games to fix problems and improve. From the first game until now it seems they took 2 steps in the wrong direction and have actually gotten worst. Yes we have many games still to improve, but c’mon gang 4th game of the season isn’t where you are still trying to find yourself. Instead it should be minor tweaks and adjustments made week in and week out to solidify the group. Seems like we are still at step 1 and need to learn basics and fundamentals of coverage for both kick and punt returns. Yes, Coach Malloe is to blame as the special teams coach. Example during the OSU game, seemed like each possession started on the 40-50 yd line. Are you going to tell me OSU’s return team is really that good? I think not, but guess what they did it not once, twice, or even three times, it happened on just about every kick and punt throughout the game! Were any adjustments made, nope… Grasso tried to kick it to one side of the field and all they had to do was contain and tackle but nope, long gain everytime. Coaches fault yes, players fault yes for not executing… Regardless, this ain’t high school football, and we need to see results or at least show improvement each game. That hasn’t happened yet and conference play is right around the corner with each team gunning for us because we are still WAC Champs. Also, certain WAC teams are known for great special teams play…hope our boys get it together quickly…cause it’s starting to get embarassing! Don’t take this in the wrong way either, I give tough love where it’s due, if you don’t point out the problem it ain’t going to get fixed!

  147. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 4:05 pm

    Jason,
    No, no I hear you about Rausch. I’m not saying it as a bad thing that he’s down on the depth chart at all. I’m just wondering what Coach Rolo is thinking because if he was clearly numero uno why didn’t he get another shot once his injury healed? Yes, Graunke is back and is probably best suited to run the offense based on experience and Funaki brings a different style…but still if Rausch was number 1, gets a minor injury, shouldn’t he be given a chance to start once healed? Just my thought.

    Anyway, I’m content with the QB situation as far as Graunke starting and Funaki as backup. Rausch should blossom if he really is that good. Still would’ve like to see he and Alexander get into the game during the blowout. I know Funaki needs reps too now that it looks as if Graunke is out. Anyway, hope the team heals up quickly during the bye week.

    Would love to see all our wounded Warriors back on the field. Especially, Blaze Soares, Fale Laeli, Jake Heun, and David Farmer. I think that’s what the D is missing…Blaze’s intensity on the field!

  148. Jason September 14, 2008 4:18 pm

    Pauoa Boy: I will give credit when credit is due — Oregon State’s return men are pretty good. Sammie Stroughter deserves a shot, although I don’t think of him as a 1st round guy (like Coach Mack thinks).

    But yeah, special teams has been very disappointing. I only attended one of the afternoon walkthroughs during fall camp, and I wasn’t all that impressed with the intensity and speed with which special teams worked. I understand not wanting to risk players getting hurt, but you can’t ignore special teams too, yeah?

    As for Rausch, I think the key point to note was that he was #1 before Tyler came back. That, and I think the Florida game showed the coaches that in a real game setting, the JC guys just aren’t ready yet. They looked good in practice, but the speed is so much different in game.

  149. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 4:19 pm

    wafan #120,

    To tell you the truth, my wife tells me that all the time that I should go play football for UH. I’ve actually thought about it a few times and after my first enlistment, almost got out of the military to enroll and walk on. One of my good friends which we all know, Chad Owens walked on that year. We have talks about it all the time cause she knows my love for sports and the Warrior football team. Plus I’ve always dreamed of playing college ball somewhere if it was playing football or basketball. I play in the military leagues and in numerous tournaments for football and basketball and have excelled in both. At this point though I would be a grandpa playing college ball. I mean I think I could hold my own and am in pretty good shape but I’m older than Coach Rolo I think? So at this point I will live my glory days through my kids when they grow up.

  150. anklebiters September 14, 2008 4:25 pm

    Another UH DVR’d game deleted without watching it completely….the Sugar Bowl was one…I didn’t even watch that game as someone had told me the score beforehand….and yesterday’s debacle was the other. I saw the first TD by UH and thought ‘all right…Tyler’s going to have a great game’ . It didn’t quite turn out that way. I switched over to the ASU game as I couldn’t make it to the game ..that was another disaster…Georgia is up next…should be a real interesting game. Is Ohio State that over rated or is USC that good???

    I hope Mac rights the ship as he has a bye week to put a competitive team on the field against SJ. Otherwise, this may have been the last game on ESPN for UH other than against Boise. I can sympathize with how PB felt in his rant post….sometimes I feel like throwing my remote at my big screen watching them play….the last two years have possibly spoiled us with all of their victories…I know it has for me. BCS is a but a future dream, a WAC championship repeat is still up for grab and the Hawaii Bowl is six victories away. Unless things change, we may be sitting home this holiday season.

    I was at the Miami/Cardinals game….Davone Bess had 2 recpt for 13 yards and averaged 27 yards on kickoff returns. He didn’t embarrass himself with his play except for an end-around-reverse where the ball was thrown to him but he wasn’t expecting it…not sure if was a broken play or not. Satele also played a decent game at center but he did get overpowered once causing a sack.. Travis Laboy had a sack for the Cardinals but was nullified by a penalty. The Redskins will be here this week…probably will not see Colt play as Campbell had a great game against the Saints today.

  151. whitey September 14, 2008 4:27 pm

    Jason, you may be correct about the qb situation, but telling one that he is #1, gets hurt, then does not play (if he is healed), is not going to get you many points. Coach Mc said that if a person is #1 and injured, he will be given the opportunity to regain that position when he has recovered. Is Rausch being given that chance?????

  152. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 4:28 pm

    Jason – Sure Stroughter is a good return guy, but again if this was something known, why not kick away from him or punt out of bounds? It may seem chicken style but give your team a chance to make a play. Regardless though, the one main thing I see that irritates me is the tackling. I don’t know why our boys try to go mano y mano straight up instead of wrapping up legs? Too many missed tackles and broken ones too.

    I understand the JC’s didn’t have a good showing against Florida but I don’t think most QB’s in the country will this year. Florida is to quick and potent on defense for anyone. To me, I think Rausch got shafted somewhat…and that’s really too bad. Good thing is he has time.

  153. whitey September 14, 2008 4:33 pm

    PB, many would like to play for the warriors, but very few would like to do the job you do. For this, I am most thankful that we have people like you who care about all of us. And to add to the frosting, you are willing to give your life for us. How many of us are willing to do that?? Thank you very much and keep on barking. You earned it.

  154. Pauoa Boy September 14, 2008 4:38 pm

    whitey,
    thanks, yeah my wife thinks I’m crazy when I tell her I ain’t afraid to die. She even told me I’m stupid when I wanted to go lift weights and play football while my back was jacked up. I dunno I think I have Blaze Soares mentality…

  155. Jason September 14, 2008 4:45 pm

    I wouldn’t use the word “shafted,” but Rausch does seem to be getting a raw deal. I like him over Alexander, and I wouldn’t mind having him as our starter, letting him grow through game experience. But then you figure, the coaches have a responsibility to the team as well — to start the best QB, and that’s probably Tyler. I just hope they expressed their reasonings to Rausch. I’d hate to be standing on the sideline, only getting mental reps, while wondering, “What did I do wrong to be in this position?” Cause it’s nothing against him. It’s his situation — there are older guys in front of him, so rather than hope he survives the season, let him start on a clean slate next year.

    And yeah, they could have kicked it out of bounds. But I also thought, if the Warriors played with discipline in their lanes and tackled well, they would have contained Stroughter and the kick returners well. That’s been a problem for quite a few years now. So I’ve got no problems with the game plan, just the execution. When players are that undisciplined in their assignments, it’s on the coaches to fix things and make sure everyone knows what to do. I’m not sure how much the coaches are emphasizing these things; but then again, I’m not in their film meetings.

  156. what's wrong September 14, 2008 4:46 pm

    First, you either a fan or not a fan.
    Second, you either support the team or you don’t.
    Third, you either support the coaches or you don’t.
    Fourth, this is college kids playing its not nfl football.
    Fifth, that could be you or your son.
    Sixth, unless you are perfect then don’t complain or criticize.

    only God is perfect.

  157. wafan September 14, 2008 4:48 pm

    PB . . .

    I always tell my kids if they do not ask they will not get.

    Even if you feel you would be the grandpa on the team you can still be the leader — just look at Funaki! Who said the cheering has to come only from the fans? Through example you could help fire up the Warriors — sometimes it sure seemed that is what they needed over the past three games — and keep them on the straight and narrow with one-mind on one-mission.

    long day….

    for the record…..

    i am not posting as “nuff said” although that is my signature closing. i am flattered that someone likes it enough to use it for his/her name.

    on another note…

    i would think maybe that the scout bowl should be postponed until later in the year on the next bye week. let’s get all the stuff out on the table and fix the areas that need fixing.

    special teams…..if need be, then let’s put first teamers out there. the fact is we need more alignment, assignment, and resposibility on special teams and SPEED. so if starting defense and/or offensive players are needed, then so be it.

    quarterbacks….no controversy if tyler can recover in time to prepare for the sjsu game. if not, then yes let the games begin as we seek a new starter for the fourth consecutive game.

    …nuff said.

    Just caught some of the game on Fox TV yesterday after hearing the first series TD on radio on my way home from work. Couldn’t even watch it much after TG went down.
    I still think the Warriors will fix whats broken, but that list is starting to pile up,
    with some questionable play calling, timing between the QB and receivers, O line, D backs and the list goes on. Hopefully the bye week will get us motivated and ready for SJSU and get the team leaders healthy and eager to show themselves and their fans what we all know the Warriors are capable of.

    Go Warriors

    If I am the Portland chapter representative we are going to have a cattle call pretty much every day ’cause I think I am mostly alone over here. I am sure there will be some drop-ins right before the Boise State game like last year.

    Had to attend to family today after being gone for 13 hours yesterday for the game. It was a good time but obviously would have been better if the game had been competitive.

    Sammie Stroughter is the real deal. Very fast and confident catching and running. It sure looked like Grasso was trying to keep it away from him. What bothered me more than Stroughter smoking us for big returns was that their special teams coverage was pinning us deep for the most part. It wasn’t just that they had a great return man — they were simply whipping us on special teams. The field position and the turnovers were killers.

    Bonehead play of the day: running it on third down towards the weak side of the line (after weak runs on first and second down). If Graunke had kept it he had a first down (going right) instead it was stuffed for a loss. After Bear went down that side of the line was kind of a mess.

    There was a guy one row ahead of us (which would be the third row from the back of the stadium) who would yell, “why are you running it!” every time there was a running play. It wasn’t like the passing game was working…

    One huge disparity that Committed Road Warrior and I were talking about during and after the game was that there were almost no Yards after Catch for the Warriors. When there was a rare completion the black and orange shirts were all over the receiver.

    On both offense and defense the line was dominated by Oregon State after the first series. That surprised me. The O-line has been worrisome with all the injuries and shuffling, and I know that the D-line has some injuries as well but I thought we had enough depth at D-line to cover it. There were few nice plays, but for the most part the Oregon State O-line was blowing up the D and giving Moevao all kinds of time.

    Wafan – thanks for driving.

    SteveM – I can’t take any credit for breakfast. I suggested some alternatives but I don’t think I came up with the idea nor did I come up with Elmers, which turned out to be perfectly fine. Side note on Elmers… Never seen a place which serves orange juice by the pint before. Usually you just get the little thimble-size glass.

    I was talking to Stretch at breakfast yesterday and he was telling story about how there are all these Tsai-ko connections – like ST finding out that the A-House family lived up the street, etc.

    I was telling him that as far as I knew I didn’t have any connections like that. He was asking me where I grew up. Maunawilli. Oh, yeah, that is where ST lives. I ask, does he live in Maunawilli Park or the Estates? The one in the back. That’s where I grew up. Stretch didn’t know the street, but thanks to iPhone magic and google maps we figure out that I grew up on the same street that ST lives on. And then we figure out that actually I grew up two houses away from the A-House family (and of course used to play with midori when we were small kids).

    Small world, yeah? There were lots of houses still in construction on the street way back then and we used to go into the lots and build forts out of plywood and whatnot. Former UH baseball player Chris Garnett grew up on that street too, about half way up.

    We moved from that house in ’85 after my freshman year of high school. Funny how sometimes you have connections even if you don’t know it.

    Nuff Said (Not you Sensei)

    The Raiders may actually be more competitive this season. At least they were smart enough to pick up Ashley. Al Davis is still the benevelont dictator/owner who is always embroiled in controversey. Recently it’s been his frustration with his head coach.

    Word was, he was gonna fire the guy if he didn’t win today. No pressure. That’s just the way Al rules the roost I guess. Always has.

    Don’t you just love the guy?…Oops, sorry, I almost forgot, Oakland is on the shores of the gay bay too….LOL! J/K…

  171. Garret September 14, 2008 7:46 pm

    I think that a couple of people said that a unit like special teams should not be criticized because that wasn’t supporting the team. However, I think it was clear that special teams struggled and Mack pointed this out to the press.

    I felt we were in the game through the first half, I thought we would come out with our kickers and our special teams. But our special teams got us in a hole; we had bad field position.

    “We really helped beat ourselves. The field position was absolutely not good. You’ve got to give Oregon State credit for that. … It was pretty much the field position that got us in trouble.”

    “There were some guys who broke down within the coverage. So we’ve got to look at our personnel.”

  172. Garret September 14, 2008 7:50 pm

    Oregon State said that special teams was a key in getting their team going (remember, their confidence was down after starting 0-2 and UH got up 7-0 early in the game). Their QB singled out the 43-yard punt return by Sammie Stroughter as the key play to get their team going.

    “It was huge. That’s the type of spark he brings to the team.”

  173. Garret September 14, 2008 7:55 pm

    expat,

    It really is a small world…especially for people who grew up in Hawaii!

    I’m very sorry that I couldn’t meet you, wafan, and all the other Tsaikos that went to the game, especially the Tsaikos that I hadn’t met before. Staying in Corvallis was great for us to be able to hang out with the family we are staying with and it was great to be at the tailgate with my parents, but it was weird to be on a road trip and not meet up with others!

  174. Garret September 14, 2008 7:57 pm

    I had mentioned earlier that we were staying at the Corvallis home of a retired UH professor. I need to correct that because he told me that he was still a “Professor Emeritus” at UH. I asked what that meant and he said that it didn’t mean much…except that he gets to park for free at UH! That is a pretty nice benefit!

    By the way, my Mom has *never* posted to a blog or forum before but Dad told me tonight that she plans to start posting under his blog name…

  176. Garret September 14, 2008 8:08 pm

    By the way, I’ve seen a lot of people who felt that the OL didn’t do that well, but I thought that they blocked decently for much of the game. AhSoon was a big loss, especially on top of the other losses the OL has already suffered, but I was proud of how they did

    Note that Tyler mentioned that in his INT on the first drive of the second half that he was able to go through all four reads! And at the point that he threw the ball, the rush *still* wasn’t there and he could have gone through his reads again! That was amazing protection on that play!

    This is from the Advertiser today:

    “I went through my reads, and Malcolm was my last read. He kind of hesitated on the route, and turned it out. It was an in-or-out (route). I kind of tried to go back to my third read, but I already had been through my fourth read. It was a bad read on my part. I should have tucked it (and run) and get what I could.”

  181. SteveM September 14, 2008 8:40 pm

    Expat — judging from your comment #168 above, you have met the final requirement (not running away or hiding) for being named President of the new Oregon Tsai-ko Chapter. 🙂 Congrats!

    Interesting connection with you and the A-House family/Midori7. Small world. Besides, UH football, what drew me into the blog was discovering a high school classmate from 4 decades ago (Al) and the later finding another (hwnstln) 😯

  182. BowsForever September 14, 2008 8:44 pm

    I don’t think there’s a Na Koa lunch on the Mondays after road games, if I heard the KKEA radio ad right. Couldn’t hurt to check with the Willows. I’m pretty sure Call the Coach is still on for Tuesday.

    Pauoa Boy,

    I read your post about how you have been thinking about walking on to play for UH. I just thought I’d let you know that Jessie Andrews did two tours in Iraq (USMC) and he just walked on to SMU. He’s 26 years old.

    Ahmard Hall (USMC) walked on to the Texas Longhorns…and eventually started at FB for their 2005 National Championship team. He’s now in his 3rd year in the NFL, all with the Titans.

    Evening everyone,

    I made it back from Portland safely, though both of my flights (PDX-SLC, SLC-PHX) were a blur…..pretty sure I wen fall asleep on both of them. Now at home waiting for the laundry to finish and trying to get back to my usual graveyard shift sleep schedule, which will much likely necessitate staying up all night. When do the night-owl Tsaikos come out?

    wafan, thank you for driving.

    Despite the outcome of the game, I had a good time with you guys: wafan, Izzy, expat— also Liz, Brew at the dinner in Corvallis.

    Guess it’s back to the regular routine until a future encounter!!!!!

  193. expat September 14, 2008 9:05 pm

    Garret,

    I am not sure that free parking at UH is worth that much if you live in Corvallis.

    When we got down to the game Wafan just followed a line of cars with Beaver flags and we ended up in a field. We kept waiting for someone to come and ask us for money, but no one did. It was just a few blocks from the stadium too. We decided that if anyone (in orange and black) asked we would say, “um, isn’t this Bob’s friend’s field?” It did look like it was a “Bob’s friend’s field” kind of place.

    If anyone in orange and black had come up to us and asked us for $10 to park there we would have handed over the money without any questions.

  194. Garret September 14, 2008 9:09 pm

    I haven’t been checking the Miami papers and the other papers for news because it is VERY hard for me to get online here, plus we have so much stuff going on. However, everyone went to sleep early so I found this Bess news.

    Undrafted rookie free agent Davone Bess, who earlier this week Sparano said has more quickness and run-after-catch ability than Ginn, has seen his role steadily grow. Not only did Bess return all the punts, and three kickoffs for 81 yards. But he also caught two passes for 13 yards as the Dolphins slot receiver.

    And it appears both of those passes were plays designed for the former Hawaii standout.

    “I’m starting to feel really good about my growth. The more they give me opportunity the more I just want to be able to showcase my ability,” Bess said. “This has been a long, long journey, and it’s not the end of it. It’s just the beginning.”

  195. al September 14, 2008 9:12 pm

    wanna talk food?

    tonight, he had a fishy dinner going on after going to marukai earlier in the day.

    we buy some really fresh aku at 5.99 lb. then, some misoyaki butterfish. the boy is with us so he sneaks in some ikura (salmon roe) into the cart. the boss buys some chinese fishcake. me, i grab some yamaimo and natto.

    also, stopped by costco on the way home and bought some nice wild coho salmon. amongst a bunch of other stuff.

    as i am cutting the sashimi the #2 boy says, “eh lets make some sushi rice”. so he does and now we having “make your own makisushi”.

    we bust out the unagi cans and here we have our own sushi bar.

    sashimi aku
    sashimi salmon
    spicy aku and salmon
    natto w/yamaimo
    ikura
    unagi
    kim chee
    miso butterfish
    fried fishcake
    tofu w/katsu boshi
    brocoli florettes w/ranch dip

    its roll your own style. the combinations were endless.
    some wine and grapes for dessert.

    chilled out watching celine dion on pbs channel with the three dogs. i think they liked celine cuz they were in a zone immediately following the first song.

    i think it would have been cheaper to have gone to yohei sushi.

  196. al September 14, 2008 9:14 pm

  197. Garret September 14, 2008 9:15 pm

    expat,

    At least he was able to use the free parking before they moved to Corvallis and he can park whenever he visits Hawaii.

    Funny story about parking near the stadium yesterday! I had my wife drop me off and pick me up in a place that was a reasonable distance from the stadium and easy for them to get to. There was one route our friends knew of where there would be NO traffic, and they were right. I would have gotten back to their house quickly but we stopped to give a jump to a car of OSU fans. They didn’t know how to jump a battery and my wife and her friend didn’t know either, so it was good that I have been through that a lot of times before.

  198. Jason September 14, 2008 9:16 pm

    BowsForever: There was a Nā Koa lunch after the Florida game. I hope there is one tomorrow, cause I have a meeting at UH at 3, and I was hoping to kill some time at the Willows. But I’m not sure how they work when there’s a bye week.

    If there is a lunch, will those going there save me a seat on the edge of the table? My back has been bothering me lately, so I’d like to be able to turn my chair towards Coach Mack during the film session.

  199. d1島 September 14, 2008 9:18 pm

    Evenin’ All.

    expat,

    Thanks for such a detailed analysis. Much food for thought (now that al has brought up the subject of “food”)

    there were almost no Yards after Catch for the Warriors. When there was a rare completion the black and orange shirts were all over the receiver.

    To what do you attribute this?
    Lack of separation prior to the catch?
    Limited ball carrying ability of the receivers?
    Improper ball placement by the QB’s?
    Type of routes? Hitch vs. Go?

  200. Jason September 14, 2008 9:19 pm

    In fact, a Google search shows that there will be a Nā Koa lunch tomorrow, with none next week because of the bye:

    garret…..i guess june jones was right about bess and colt and how they would have nice nfl careers.

    aside from things that prevented them from being high draft picks, it seems that they have landed in favorable situations. had bess run sub 4.5 40’s and had colt weighed in at 215 to begin with they would have had some big bucks.

    hopefully they will survive without critical injuries so that their next contracts will be commensurate to their abilities and worth.

    i can’t help but imagine that had colt gone out his junior year….would the miami dolphins have drafted him as was rumored by none other than rich miano that they were willing to take him in the first round with the ninth pick.

    it may have impacted our recruiting of a highly touted hs quarterback two years ago.

    hey stevem….you can leave the toilet seat up now.

  210. BowsForever September 14, 2008 9:43 pm

    OK, whatever the calendar says.

    It’s great that Davone is starting, but the Dolphins need wins badly. On the other hand, Davone’s got one of the most studious (and most accurate, ever) QBs in the game to work with, apparently, so that’s a plus.

    Colt gave up millions in up-front pay to give us football fans the Sugar rush of a lifetime. Hopefully he can “make” those “millions” back with interest later in his career…IMHO, his true-grit senior season will serve him well in the NFL. Now it’s just a matter of finding his opportunity (and having Zorn let him throw tons of passes every practice to keep his accuracy up).

  211. BG September 14, 2008 9:43 pm

    There can’t be anything more satisfying than seeing “the light go on” for an athlete or team. I think (and hope) that might have happened for the Wahine this weekend. I don’t know what Dave might have said, or maybe he didn’t say anything at all, but the team stepped away from a possible free fall and scrapped and clawed their way to victory. They could have become discouraged or tentative when they were blocked so often, but they fought through it all. What a way to have hard work, perserverence, and team trust be rewarded…with a victory that stands out even among the multitude of wins through the years.

    That win could be the foundation for one very good year. The football boys could really get a boost out of watching the game!

    Imua Rainbow Wahine!

  212. al September 14, 2008 9:44 pm

  214. Ralph September 14, 2008 9:51 pm

    the biggest improvement for the wahines and their success is hittle and herring on the back line digging and passing, and thomas blocking and making a lot of touches to slow the ball down. Kaufman has improved her serving and hitting from last year…once she starts improving her blocks per game we’ll go to another level…Houston, Cubi-Otineru and Herring will get their kills as long as the passing improves.

  215. Ralph September 14, 2008 9:53 pm

    I hope shoji keeps hittle as libero and move kaaihue to ds, hittle’s height and floor coverage really helps the wahine passing game….

  216. al September 14, 2008 9:55 pm

    vball….one of the significant adjustments was having stephanie ferrell, a rising star hitter, play the front row rotations coupled with aneli cubi-otineru playing the back row. this two-headed “monster” produced awesome results.

    and how about amber kaufmann’s 11 aces, a new uh record.

    danny mafua has definitely upped her game recently.

    One side benefit of being a collegiate athlete is the experience of traveling to places that may never otherwise happen. #1 son had a trip in his first year to the Midwest.
    #2 son was sending me pics he took of Dealey Plaza today as they took a short side trip on the way to DFW. He was moved by the narrative of one of the locals who took the time to point out some of the prominent features in the area: the grassy knoll, the book depository, the spot where the Zapruder film was taken, etc. I don’t think that he would have ever even spent more than a fleeting moment thinking about the event that changed the world there in 1963 if not for this road trip.

    I hope mafua looks a more hitting options, looking at the stats, herring and houston attempts are sky high meaning her sets are to the left primarily to these two.. for the wahines to reach the final four, they need more involvement from the others, and what would happen if either herring or houston go into a funk in a match, can’t swtich gears and expect someone to step up when not put into that position during the season.

    Koakane, you can remember Houston by bigger hitter, no field (no play good defense)

    Lots of people are waiting for the defense light to go on.

    Kanani Herring is the complete volleyball player. This weekend Kanani would chase down balls from the back line and set the attackers.

    Jaime was money vs the Huskies, but can she do it again?

    My money is on Kanani.

  238. Koauka September 14, 2008 11:23 pm

    BTW, did the fearless leader ST return in one piece?

  239. koakane ™ September 14, 2008 11:51 pm

    koauka no get me wrong I like kherring’s play and her skills yes are more complete than houston. I luv the style da wahines play. reminds me of the spunky teams cshoji used to have in his beginning years. btw howzit and good eveing to you.

  240. koakane ™ September 15, 2008 12:06 am

    like some newcaster always say……finally tonight with my frustration level lower and anger gone. I needed some time to think how should I respond to yesterday’s disaster. I still believe da warriors can defend thier WAC title but not going be easy. I have heard many say this team is not as talented as last year. I tend not to totally agree because in a way they are talented. No one has yet found a way to mold this raw talent into a cohesive unit and only the coaches and the boys can solve that issues. So I go back to my roots and share this advise teach, teach and teach some more burn dat night light, meet some more, research other techniques, review your years of experience and find ways to remold this group. hard yes but not impossible.

    With that said I feel better ….. might help or maybe not.

    well to steal a phrase for some well known tsai-ko’s nuff said and whooooosh. dream well and have a pleasant night of relaxing sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

  241. Koauka September 15, 2008 12:38 am

    Everybody believe in the Mack!

    Still can.

    Thank you for the insigtful comments Silky Voice of the Gorn.
    Since Mac is a high standard quality coach I think he expects the Hawaii fans to ask the tough questions. Let’s stand up to this battle cry!

  251. FloridaTed September 15, 2008 6:01 am

    Morning, Tsaikos and Tsai-Meister,

    Since the world has not ended, I’m able to look at this weekend with some calm objectivity.

    A few things are obvious, this team has not learned to deal with sudden adversity just yet. They hang their heads too easily. Even the defense admitted that they were getting frustrated and let up.

    The offense is changed every week, either through ineptness by the QB’s or untimely misfortune. I’m glad to hear that the JC’s are getting more reps this week. It is vital that we’re getting them as game ready as possible. We clearly saw this Saturday how fast things can change.

    For some reason Inoke just doesn’t see the field. On his interception he had a wide open receiver down the sideline.

    Graunke must have been hurt right after the first TD drive because, all of a sudden his throws were wobbling and floating like dead ducks.

    The receivers have to learn to help the QB a lot more, including coming back once in awhile.

    While Graunke is injured, Rausch needs to take Nr. 2 reps at least and if Inoke faulters again, give him another chance.

    Special Teams is a disaster and needs to start over from scatch, pure and simple.

    The D needs to get their mojo back, while realizing that they have to be the team leaders as the O is trying to get their sea legs under them.

    And last, but not least, everybody on the team, from coaches to players, need to get together as one and re-assess everything from top to bottom. No team is good enough, not even USC, to just show up and win without a true fighting spirit. That’s why last years team was so good, not because they had so much superior talent, but because they faught for every inch of territory, no matter what the score.

    We have a By now, regroup and find that spirit deep down and the wins will come. A whole new season begins on 9-27-08, a new page has turned. Come on Warriors, write your story for 2008.

  252. d1島 September 15, 2008 6:13 am

    Great Morning All.

    It’s Hawaii.
    The sun rises to make a beautiful day.
    Sometimes the trade winds go away; the weather turns, clouds build, it rains. Plans go awry, people get sad, frustrated.
    My personal observation of over 50 years: the trades come back, the day gets beautiful again.

    HiHo…

  253. Maverick September 15, 2008 6:37 am

    This is a complete new coaches board, young and older, but all have something to bring to the table. Some that have not coached yet on the D1 level, but are learning fast, the hard way. Sometimes you absorb more with the loss, than the win.
    But they need to come together and agree that something is broken, and needs to be fixed right away. They are trying to hold onto a system that was passed down to them, but at the same time, need to establish their own identity. This takes time to mold together.
    Hopefully the fan turnout will continue to on the top level to show that support.
    This week is an overhaul session, but time will be running out soon, as this is the time most teams should be in a polishing mode from the last 3 weeks.
    Let’s Keep the good mana flowing for our injured to heal up quickly and wisely.

    The Tsaikos are some of the most loyal fans out there, helping keep the team up when most needed.

  254. Loa September 15, 2008 6:43 am

    morning gang!

    hey you know as bad as the fans feel about this weekends game, imagine how the boys and the coaches feel? i bet there pretty p’d off
    they put in the hours of sacrifice, sweat, studying and unfortunately scored less then the opponent

    the boys really need our support now more then ever, so Warriors, don’t get down on yourselves, its a long season, regroup and prepare for the second quarter

    everyone have a safe and happy day
    thoughts and prayers to the friends and families affected by Ike

  255. Loa September 15, 2008 7:01 am

    in case anyone missed Stephen’s article this morning

    The Warriors will have meetings and conditioning sessions today. They practice from 7 to 9 a.m. tomorrow and Wednesday. On Thursday, they practice from 7 to 8 a.m., then will stage the Scout Bowl from 8 to 9 a.m. The Scout Bowl is a full-contact scrimmage involving redshirts, scouts and developing players.

    The Warriors will take off Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

  256. koakane ™ September 15, 2008 7:11 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka Tsai-ko nation beautiful day in Hawaii Nei. Llike d1 puts it the trades are back and anoddah day starts with the sun shinning brightly. Now is the time to hele on.

    Play nicely today, have s terrific cup of kofe and enjoy

  257. Maverick September 15, 2008 7:17 am

    Seems at this point, the scout bowl should be adjusted to Friday or Saturday, due to the team’s situation.

  258. Pomai September 15, 2008 7:17 am

    As most of us are aware there is no I in team, but at this point there needs to be an I from the coaches all the way down to the fans, and that I is “What can I do to help this team” as far as the fans are it’s the big “S” support support and support them some more. We as fans need to show up and be heard, we cannot let the team down, they need us just as we need them.

    I BELIEVE

    That might be a plan, Kekoa.

    Maverick,

    you are right about one thing. Something is wrong!!!
    and you might be right on another thing, the scout bowl. The coaches should think about moving the scout bowl to Fri, Sat or Sun. Give the guys time for heal, get their plans in order.

    and you right about the coaches being p’d off too. i am, and ergo i know day iz. imho da plannin wen all kapakahi Sat. just seemed like there came a point wen i knew da O going on da field wuz a waste ah time just couldn’t wait fo da game fo get ova. an if i wuz feeling like dat, dat was a reflection ah da vibes dat wuz coming ova da tv.

    Suggestions anyone?

    I forgot to say that the title, “No time to waste,” makes me think about Mark Ronson: who the dj be, they said Ronson….

    I know, no connection to football sorry

  270. Maverick September 15, 2008 9:02 am

    BHF2-
    Though the Mack will always take the responsibility on the final outcome, the kuleana of the coaching staff should also step up and talk this out loud. This is why they get a paycheck. Good pay to make good decisions. The season opener is pau, and it seems they haven’t moved on yet. The shuffle pass is still not working most of the time, and most of the plays are too easy to choreograph from the fans perspective. These teams that UH will be facing soon have a very creative Offensive playbook that can wear down a defense from just the thinking end.

    Hopefullythe coaches are not in a denial phase, too stubborn to try veering on a different path, or maybe there not on the experience level coach Mack was anticipating.
    The play calling at times was almost child like street football with no sense to it, obiviously.

  271. Kekoa September 15, 2008 9:03 am

    Big Hilo ~ Jump da big bird and fly in for da WB practice. Jez tell to me wen da newspapah plane come in to HNL? I pick you up on my way in with Pops and the unofficial Wessai Warrior Express (’cause the official one might be packed arready).

    Windward side, call in sick and den come show your colors! If can, can…if no can, still can!

  272. Bill September 15, 2008 9:04 am

    Just a “lurker” wondering about some things.

    It’s been said many times on the blog, but how can Rausch go from #1 to #4 without getting a real chance, I think he had 7 throws against Florida?

    In my 28 years as a season ticket holder is this year’s special team unit is the worst yet & this includes the “Whothappen” era?

    How come so many muscle related injuries? Bulla has it right on, STRECHING is extremely important, do they have a regular cool down period with stretching after workouts?

    Last thing, I projected 7 wins this year and the 2 losses so far are factored in. If Graunke is out, can we get 7 wins with a quarterback that cannot throw a tight spiral beyond 15 to 20 yards accurately?

  273. Maverick September 15, 2008 9:19 am

    Bill – you question above concerning the QB and possible wins –

    Not really.

    Funaki is a special person with a gift of talent for football. But for what we’ve seen so far, his style doesnt fit Hawaii’s offense. He can be utulized on certain plays, but the offense doesn’t run the option.
    If Tyler’s prognosis is long term for healing, then Raush or Alexander need to get back in the saddle again, ride it out, and improve with facing D1 speed.

  274. Bill September 15, 2008 9:28 am

    Maverick, I agree 100%, just wondering if that was the thoughts of the majority out there.

    Off today so I have sometime to “blog”, will check back later to see if I get some opinions on my other questions.

    Mahalo Maverick

  276. al September 15, 2008 9:39 am

    dpk….has it been officiall announced about ah soon’s condition or is it still speculation? you never said anything definitive about it?

  277. Kekoa September 15, 2008 9:43 am

    Bill ~ Come down to watch a practice session. See for yourself. It will answer your questions. You’ll be close enough to hear the instructions from the coaches, and just a few steps away from getting trampled.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ok…gotta attend a biz meeting, then I’ll be grabbing lunch at MAC 24/7 in the Prince Kuhio Hotel with my Posse.
    Note to Bulla: Need a little extra protection from da tourists during the lunch hour please sir.
  278. Da Punchbowl Kid September 15, 2008 10:30 am
    al-
    I was reporting what I had heard during Tsai’s interview on Leahey and Leahey this morning. He said that AhSoon “might” be out for the season, and his tone seemed to indicate that it’s more likely than not.
    I know, I know, I sound like a politician, but that was my read on it.
  279. Kazz September 15, 2008 10:31 am
    Is everyone on stand-by to hear about AhSoon and Graunke’s status???
  280. Da Punchbowl Kid September 15, 2008 10:32 am
    Kekoa-
    I would like to join you all on thursday. It depends on how well and how quckly I can finish this re-write I’m working on. I’ll keep ya posted.
  281. Kazz September 15, 2008 10:37 am
    Whatever the outcome, an injury to the ACL, especially for someone his size and at the position he is in is NOT good and we must pray for the best for this guy.
    He gave a lot in his years at UH and while some (including myself) were hard on the o-line at Sugar Bowl and during the spring and fall camps, he showed us he is one of the leaders on this team and leaves it all on the field.
  282. Kazz September 15, 2008 10:43 am
    My humble opinions on the injuries:
    LWJ-seems like this injury will be taken care of during the bye week.
    Libre-not so much… with a shifty back like him, this needs more time than two weeks to heal.
    AhSoon-see post #282.
    Graunke-wild card injury due to his proven ability to move the ball on offense. I have no clue what to think it could be other than thinking back to 2007 when he injured the same hand during practice when he jammed it into a defender’s helmet. That injury put him on the list for about three weeks I think?
    Ad Sound Recorder 3.5
    In 2005 the last time the Warriors had a losing season there was reason for optimism.Colt Brennan who would have two more seasons of eligibility led the nation in touchdown passes that year. Slotbacks Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins were freshmen….
