Graunke tops injury list

CORVALLIS  — Right-handed quarterback Tyler Graunke suffered an injury to his right thumb and right wrist in today’s 45-7 loss to Oregon State.
Graunke will have X-rays tomorrow after the Warriors return from the Mainland. They are staying overnight in Oakland.
Graunke’s right hand and wrist were wrapped in a brace. He said he cannot bend the thumb.
The Warriors have a bye next week. If Graunke is not available for the Sept. 27 WAC opener against San Jose State, Inoke Funaki will be the No. 1 quarterback.
Left tackle Keith AhSoon was on crutches. It is feared he suffered ligament damages in his left knee. He will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Running backs Leon Wright-Jackson (arch) and Daniel Libre (high-ankle sprain) aggravated injuries.

  17. Kekoa (ST's PR Man) September 13, 2008 4:16 am

Dear Lady who hit Mr. Tsai ~

~ I believe that you have some anger issues…brainstorming yes, brainshoving ear buds, no!

~ Didn’t you notice that Mr. Tsai wears glasses?

~ He’s farsighted so everything up close is kinda fuzzy even with his glasses on. I bet he thought you had accidently inflated your life vest and was about to help you take it off. Omigooness, good thing he didn’t!

~ All you had to do is say “Aren’t you the famous Sports writer?” and he would’ve autographed your flight brochure.

~ All you had to continue to say is you are an avid reader of the *Warrior Beat* and he would have pulled out two tickets to the Wahine VB game for the next time they play at Boise St.

~ All you had to ask is, “Aren’t those wonderful people who are ardent followers of yours called Tsai-ko’s? and he would have had one of us arrange for a cattle call in your honor.

~ All you had to do is curb your anger to make a new friend and he prolly would have shared the lunch his lovely wife Wena packed for him.

In the future, you should be more courteous to people who you may have mistaken for Geeky looking, big-headed, cell phone repairman.

    Aloha!
    -Kekoa

  30. Garret September 13, 2008 5:22 am

I can’t wait for this game! I wish I was with the group tailgating in Portland right now–I’m sure that they are having a great time. But I spend so little time with my parents that I had to opt for the tailgate they will be at (Panda Travel tailgate across from the stadium).

  31. Garret September 13, 2008 5:24 am

    Pomai,

I hate to make this prediction, but I don’t want an OSU fan to win the contest…so, UH 14, OSU 17.

  32. Garret September 13, 2008 5:29 am

No WiFi at this house so I can only get on the web for short bursts when I can plug my computer directly into their AP. So, I can catch up with the blog once per day (reading while offline) but never had a chance to post until now.

It was great to go all around Portland yesterday–the 7 of us went to the Rose Garden, Chinese Garden, Todai, the biggest shopping mall, etc. I proudly wore one of my green Warrior shirts, and we ran into a LOT of people from Hawaii at the Rose Garden who came to talk with us because they could tell we were UH fans. Someone shouted out my name and waved in the mall, but when I tried to catch up to their group they were gone.

The oddest thing to me was that when we were walking around the Chinese Garden there was a guy dressed in full Boise State gear who was part of a group of tourists.

  33. Garret September 13, 2008 5:30 am

Anyway, got to eat breakfast with my kids now…Go Warriors!

  70. whitey September 13, 2008 8:44 am

Cal is getting their okoles kicked by Maryland, 28-6. Cal is ranked, but they going drop out of sight if they lose. Looks like Nevada lost to Missouri.

  71. uhfan808 September 13, 2008 8:51 am

Went to Wahine Volleyball on Thursday nite. *Great job, women!* Good first game but St. Mary’s seemed to give up by the second and third game.

Most exciting part came unexpectedly in the beginning when we met Lurker Nathan! and his daughter Nancy!! Nathan thought he recognized us and asked if we were Tsaikos; we asked if he was a Lurker-gonna-go-Tsaiko-status. lol

Hoping he’ll come out to meet us sometime. (hint, hint ) Good fun and good times! Crazy, fun Tsaikos all in support of Warrior Football!
    .
    .
Lurker Nathan, Mahalo from me too, for letting us borrow one of your seats! See you at a future game or Tsaiko get-together!

  72. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 8:54 am

    test

  73. A-House September 13, 2008 9:01 am

    ST:

How can I forget the name of an idividual, must swallow real hard to say it or maybe even choke, who brought UH much humbug and not much else when he was supposed to be the great Olympic’s connected savior who promised, but didn’t deliver.

So, ST hope the press box at Oregon State is plush.

    59 minutes and counting!!!!!!!!

  74. whitey September 13, 2008 9:02 am

ok, time to go. may this day bring much joy to you, your family, and friends. ta ta!!

  75. A-House September 13, 2008 9:02 am

  89. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 9:46 am

    15 minutes….

  90. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2008 9:46 am

Ten more minutes. We’re switching from Noggin (Rinskin’s shows) to the game.

  95. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 9:53 am

Koa-mahu – Yeah I know all the boys except me haha, nah bumbai you come offa hea an false me ah… Anyway, seems like you get planny boyfren on hea, so I take a rain check for many, many years…

  96. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 9:55 am

Kelli – Lets hope so cause I don’t think I could ever put Jason and the term smoking hot in the same sentence, das like one oxymoron. Sorry Jason but no can, ever, never, ever, haha…maybe Koa-Mahu can…

  97. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 9:56 am

  102. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:09 am

  103. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:12 am

    GGGGGGGGGGO WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRIORS!!!!!

  104. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:12 am

is anyone watching the game on the web? if so please send address forthe site

  109. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:15 am

Well, at least it’s a hold by the D, considering the pretty bad start. Woohoo, scoreless!

  110. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:15 am

    Mr. A-House,
midori7 says you must not be watching the game. Either that or you getting plenty exercise!

  111. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 10:16 am

aurite aurite. choke kick choke kick

    go Warriors!!

da braddaz are hitting really goood!!!!!!

  112. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:16 am

No, listening on good ol’ AM. You can also listen on the web: espn1420am.com (slight delay of a few seconds sometimes)

  113. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:17 am

Gotta love Veikune’s pro prospects…from out-of-nowhere-reserve last year to every QB’s nightmare.

  114. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:18 am

    Well, there goes LWJ.

  115. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:18 am

    1st down!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  116. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 10:19 am

    fling da rock, bradda Graunke!

    Go Warriors

    yeee haaaa!!!

  117. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:20 am

Good thing Mack likes depth. O-line looking thin these days. Bye week can’t come soon enough.

  118. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:20 am

Graunke to Mr. Washington! Here we go!

  119. alnbama September 13, 2008 10:21 am

Hey Mr Ahouse, It was a pleasure meeting you and your wonderful family in
fla. I just ordered the hawaii iptv box, but was just wondering if i’ll still have to pay for the pay per view fee for games. Listening to the game off of the OSU site, paid 8.95 to listen to the game. Go Warriors

  120. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:21 am

    Yee Haw!!

    Pilares for the 1st down!

  121. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:22 am

Pilares. Rules. Show ’em the “run” in run-n-shoot!

  122. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:22 am

    TD!!!! Pilares!!!

  123. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:23 am

I’m sorry but I think that was a good hit by Afalava. Go, TD Warriors!

  124. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:23 am

Auryte bruddah Kealoha take it to dah house

  125. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:24 am

    Touchdown Warriors!

  126. alnbama September 13, 2008 10:24 am

    WooooHoooo Pilares

  127. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:24 am

Depleted run defense? Just shovel it!(tm)

Helps that Pilares had tons of practice with the shovel pass last year.

  128. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:24 am

Afalava’s hit was legal, Bain just got popped Graunke left him out to hang…

    Hope AhSoon is okay…

  129. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:25 am

I have a feeling the shovel pass will be critical this game…will it help take pressure off the O-line?

  130. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:25 am

Defense looking solid so far….hope this continues throughout the game chee hee

  131. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:26 am

I think the Afalava has been tagged by refs as someone to watch because of last year when he knocked out Locker.

  132. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 10:26 am

    hoboy,

    Graunke sets em up

    Kealoha gives em da stick!!!

    Go Warriors!!!!

  133. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:27 am

    Ghost of special teams past.

  134. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:28 am

    You’re probably right, Ronnie.

Might be a big day for Pilares, and LWJ.

  135. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:28 am

Maybe a few bear crawls will help next week. Malloe should seriously consider it if this 35+ yard return stuff keeps up. That is no way to set up the defense.

  136. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:29 am

    DEFENSE!
    *clap clap*
    DEFENSE!

  137. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:30 am

    Josh Leonard!!

    Yea GGma!

  138. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:31 am

    DEFENSE!
    *clap clap*
    DEFENSE!

  139. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:32 am

    DEFENSE!
    *clap clap*
    DEFENSE!

    DEFENSE!
    *clap clap*
    DEFENSE!

  140. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:33 am

Wow. This D is a rock at their 25.

  141. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:33 am

    Way to go DEFENSE!
    Way to GO!!!

  142. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:33 am

OSU kicker having a bad day. Time for us to go after an insurance score!

  143. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:34 am

Bwahaha Kahut no can boot, frikkin scrub…

  144. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 10:34 am

    big kahuna
    big kahuna

choke da kicka choke da kicka

    Go Warriors!!!!

    yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaa!!!!

  145. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:35 am

    Defense is playing hard.

  146. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:35 am

Pilares is doing great, but I wouldn’t Libre as a change-up every now and then to start working him back up to 100%.

  147. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:36 am

    nm…go Libre!

  148. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:36 am

whooooohooooo! Beavers missed their field goal!

    Go Tyler! Go Libre!

  149. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:37 am

Bummer! 3rd run was sniffed out!

  150. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:37 am

Uh…questionable play-calling there. You KNOW Graunke has the hot hand, you should think about having him pass at least once, maybe?

  151. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:38 am

Do we even HAVE a special team?!?!?!?!?

  152. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:38 am

    Special teams still sucking. 🙁

  153. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:39 am

    WTF Special Teams???????!!!!!!????????

    Coach Malloe WTF!!!

  154. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:39 am

They are starting where they left off before the missed FG!

  155. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:40 am

Pfft…just let OSU have a score already. This is ridiculous. If you give the other team a half-field game, they have the upper hand every time.

  156. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:40 am

Our special teams aren’t special, that’s for sure.

  157. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:41 am

If there’s one good thing going on, OSU is burning TOs at a pretty quick clip.

  158. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:42 am

BowsForever – you’re right. They won’t have any when they need them in the 2nd quarter.

  159. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:42 am

    quick clip

Say that five times fast. LOL

  160. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:43 am

    Here we go WARRIORS!

    Here we GO!!

  161. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:44 am

Kekaula is 100% right here…rhythm is KEY. Sure you need to balance the offense out, but running Libre three times and punting keeps Graunke on ice. You need him to get confident.

  162. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:45 am

midori said that OSU guy not supposed to aid the runner! That’s not a TD!?!

    aaaaarrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!!!

  163. UHfan808 September 13, 2008 10:46 am

    Go O-line!

  164. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:46 am

I’m sure hoping that not letting Graunke loose on the second series wasn’t the difference-maker in this game.

  165. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:47 am

    YIKES!!! GRAUNKE!!!!
    Dropped the ball?

  166. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:47 am

Coach Malloe need to do Bear Crawls with the Special Ed Teams…they f**kin suck @ss again and are killing us again…..GRRRRRRR!!!!

  167. Esme September 13, 2008 10:48 am

    Nnnnggggaaaahhhh!

  168. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:49 am

OMFG – this game is frustrating and it’s only 1st quarter!

  169. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:49 am

This is going to be a painful first half.

  170. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:50 am

    Punting from the endzone!!!

What is up with the special teams?!?!

    Facemask?!

    Come ON guys!!@

  171. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:50 am

    Nnnnggggaaaahhhh!

    ditto!

  172. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:50 am

HEY SPECIAL TEAMS GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR F**KIN @SSES, OR JUST GO AHEAD AND KEEP HANDING OSU FIELD POSITION AND TOUCHDOWNS… YOU GUYS ARE F**KIN KILLING OUR TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  173. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:51 am

How is the defense going to keep holding them when they are starting practically in the REDZONE each series?!?!?!

  174. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:51 am

Is it overtime already? Why is OSU starting from Hawaii’s 25?

  175. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:52 am

    Praying for a turnover!!!

    Ok, time to make adjustments!!!!

  176. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:52 am

    MALLOE YOU’RE FIRED!!!

  177. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:53 am

Has special teams ever been this bad? Even on the road? Sheesh. And why the heck is one of the best pass-pro RBs (Pilares) OFF the field?

  178. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:54 am

Special teams was this bad against Boise in ’05 and ’06, but I don’t think they were this bad against ALL their opponents in those years!

  179. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:54 am

The best _NFL_ defense couldn’t hold on fields this short.

  180. djmitcho September 13, 2008 10:55 am

Special Teams is killing me right now.

  181. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:55 am

Defense can’t do much when they have there backs against the wall each time. Good job special ed teams a bunch of buddy f**kers why don’t ya! How soon can you fire a coach and put someone on the staff that knows how to run a special teams unit…Malloe f**kin sucks!

  182. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:55 am

    one more stop!

    one more stop!

    CRAP!!

  183. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:56 am

D is frustrated and can’t play their best in this situation. I can’t blame them.

  184. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:56 am

I thought we were going to put our BEST on special teams. I KNOW we are better than this!

  185. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:57 am

Field position at the 25 or better would be a good place for the O to start.

  186. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 10:57 am

I miss guys on special teams like Keomaka, Keenan Jones, and Galdeira…guys who know how to f**kin tackle and make plays!!!

  187. BowsForever September 13, 2008 10:57 am

Well, at least WE have a good field to work with.

  188. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:58 am

    Great return!

  189. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:58 am

    Pass the ball!

  190. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 10:58 am

Come on Coach Lee, open up that playbook

  191. TChahng [태한민국] September 13, 2008 10:59 am

    A-House,

I just sent you an email with “Seo Dong Yo” information.

  192. Ronnie September 13, 2008 10:59 am

    Hmm.. interesting tackle…

  193. djmitcho September 13, 2008 11:00 am

Damn, we are working with a 2nd string o-line on the left side. That can’t help either

  194. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:00 am

We really can’t wast this return. We have good field position. Has OSU adjusted that much that what worked on the first drive is not working now?

  195. 99club September 13, 2008 11:01 am

    Ronnie-
Yeah I yelled “horse collar!” on that last one.

  196. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 11:02 am

    Wasted return.

  197. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:03 am

Ok…empty set on 3rd down. What. The. Heck. If that play makes any sense at all, you’d have to have Funaki in there. And he’s gotta be out this game because of his suspected concussion, right?

  198. LizKauai (iPhone) September 13, 2008 11:03 am

    ayah slow signal again.

  199. 99club September 13, 2008 11:03 am

Way to kick to the sideline! About time.

  200. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:04 am

Afalava can tell like take some cheap shots…das okay he deserve to cause I dunno WTF is going on right now!

From what I see, our Oline is not deep at all…we need Pepa, and AhSoon back at Guard the other guys ain’t cutting it…

  201. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:06 am

    time out? WTH!

  202. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:07 am

I was going to try to watch the game without champagne – since I had some last night, but I just CAN’T STAND IT!!!

    I need to calm down!

  203. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:07 am

Aunty Ronnie I thinking if we getting this crazy about OSU just wait until we go Fresno St… Going have security for keep us inline…aiyah!

  204. 99club September 13, 2008 11:08 am

It can be argued that all scores in this game started with a personal foul penalty, IMHO.

  205. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:08 am

Rob25 – based on Pauoa Boy’s comments, we know what we are in for at the armpit of America game 😉

  206. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:08 am

No chit, I try not to drink either but Bud Light sounds good right now!!!

  207. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:09 am

Pauoa Boy – WOW, we posted the same thought at the same time! 😀

  208. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:10 am

    NO MORE 1ST DOWNS!!!!

    NO MORE 1ST DOWNS!!!!

    NO MORE 1ST DOWNS!!!

  209. 99club September 13, 2008 11:11 am

    YESSSS!! Nice stop.

  210. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:11 am

FAIR CATCH AT THE 8? how hard would it be to go forward for at least 2?

  211. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:11 am

    Long road up the field…

  212. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 11:12 am

    Let’s go offense!

  213. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:12 am

hmmm… who is #44 for OSU? I’m sure it’s not Adam Leonard like the announcers said it was.

  214. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:12 am

    Also…where the heck is Rego?!

  215. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:12 am

Holy Shit can our offense be anymore predictable or what dayumit!!!

  216. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 11:13 am

I remember Ron Lee said we will do a ‘little’ more running.

    NOT EVERY DAMN DOWN!!!

  217. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:13 am

    FIRST DOWN!

    FIRST DOWN!!

    FIRST DOWN!!!

  218. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:14 am

    That was close!

  219. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:14 am

    They’re KILLING ME!!

  220. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:15 am

why are we keep throwing out patterns throw vertical, lets go Coach Ron…WTF!

  221. Hawaii Roller September 13, 2008 11:17 am

Whatever happened to those quick slants, break out screens. Come on Coach Lee.

  222. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:17 am

So, is Grasso hurt? That was a 38 yd punt.

  223. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:17 am

I didn’t know putting our BEST special teams out there meant giving Grasso as many opportunities as possible this game. I think I need more than Bud Light, I need to crack open a bottle of 151 for this game!

  224. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:18 am

    We need a turnover!

    Quick change offense!

  225. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:18 am

Whatever happened to the quick out on first or second down? Kekaula theorizes if they’re straitjacketing Graunke’s enthusiasm. Maybe so.

  226. Kekoa (iPhone) September 13, 2008 11:19 am

We got to shore up the left side of the O line!

  227. LizKauai (iPhone) September 13, 2008 11:19 am

they play the sound of a chainsaw when we have a 3rd down.

  228. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:19 am

No real pressure on Moevao won’t help any. Of course, hard to put much pressure on him with short fields like this.

  229. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:19 am

What does “straitjacketing Graunke’s enthusiasm” mean?

Does RK think it is on purpose?

  230. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:20 am

    Late hit! Superb! NOT!

  231. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:20 am

    WTF!!!

instead of 4th down, they have a 1st down?!?!?!

    THEY’RE KILLING ME!!!!

  232. 22London September 13, 2008 11:21 am

I’m not watching or listening to the game but lurking, from what I’m reading I sense that Coach Lee is playing it close to the vest, an obvious change from JJ..

  233. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:21 am

    Lemme see

1st game – Alexander does shitty…Funaki saves the day

2nd game – Funaki knocked out…Graunke saves the day

3rd game – Graunke doing shitty…who’s turn is it today???

Time for a shot of 151, here we go….

  234. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:22 am

    22London – why aren’t you listening?

  235. BowsForever September 13, 2008 11:22 am

I’m so steamed I’m hardly making any sense.

  236. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:23 am

Hey on a good note at least we know OSU kicker sucks @ss

  237. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:23 am

Wow! Their kicker is not doing so well!

  238. 99club September 13, 2008 11:24 am

    C’mon Warriors! No more penalties!!!

  239. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:24 am

    DELAY OF GAME against Hawai’i!

    What! 40 second clock issue?

  240. 22London September 13, 2008 11:25 am

    Ronnie,
I remember last year you had to stop watching (can’t remember which game) because you had chest pains…at the rate you’re blogging, you’ve got me worried about a repeat…go easy sister…..

  241. 99club September 13, 2008 11:25 am

    play the circus music.

  242. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:25 am

Wow, Graunke fumbled the snap and STILL completed that pass!!

    Yee Haw!

  243. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 11:26 am

    c’mon Warriors!!!

  244. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:26 am

OMFG WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT GRAUNKE???

  245. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:26 am

    Graunke intercepted!

    Another bobbled snap/transfer!

  246. 99club September 13, 2008 11:26 am

    What the hell was that?!

  247. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:27 am

WHO THE HELL WAS YOU PASSING TO?

  248. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:27 am

22London – that was the San Jose St. game 🙂

I just turn the sound off so I can’t hear the crowd and it’s better.

  249. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:28 am

    Come on D!

  250. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:29 am

Coaches better eat some McDonalds during half time and believe in magic cause that’s what we’re going to need to win this game. The way this game is going if changes don’t happen Hawaii deserves to lose and the coaches are to blame for it as of right now! We’ll see let’s go Warriors!!!

  251. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 11:30 am

at least our defense is playing BIG!

    c’mon offense.

  252. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:31 am

Dayumit lets just let OSU walk in the endzone please, D the F**K UP!!!!!!!!!!

  253. 99club September 13, 2008 11:31 am

    Have a seat #88!

  254. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:32 am

So, in other WAC news, #6 Missouri beat Nevada 69-17. I guess our 56-10 against Florida wasn’t so bad. Although you can’t tell by THIS game!!!

    Down by 2 TD’s!! WTH!

  255. bb September 13, 2008 11:33 am

    matador special teams and defense….

  256. FloridaTed September 13, 2008 11:34 am

This is the Florida Nightmare all over. Graunke and the offense look like they were just introduced today. D is playing their hearts out, while the O is costing us the game again.

Come on Warriors, get it together!!!!!

  257. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 11:34 am

    awww crap!!!!

    c’mon Tsaiikos, cheer for meeee!!!!!!

  258. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:35 am

At least it looks like they are running a 2 minute drill – unlike last week.

  259. bb September 13, 2008 11:38 am

could dan kelly hit water if he fell out of a boat?

  260. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:38 am

    WOW…I think I’m done watching this game…DISGUSTING!!!

  261. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:38 am

There must be a force field to block any FG attempt by either team!

  262. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:39 am

OSU called a timeout with 35 seconds left in the half? Give me a break!

Now they REALLY deserve a turnover!

  263. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:39 am

Take that back, I am going to do a miracle ritual and maybe something can happen…

  264. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:41 am

Hey, Idaho scored to tie with Western Michigan.

  265. NYUH September 13, 2008 11:41 am

    Fire Lee

  266. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:43 am

Wow, I kind of suck at College Pigskin Picks. I mean who knew Maryland would beat Cal… and South Florida would beat Kansas…

  267. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:45 am

This year’s team is looking disastrous so far…our Defense can only do so much…all other facets of our team is in WTF status! Offense cannot move the ball consistently on anyone. If you tell me look at Weber St. game you gotta be frikkin kidding me cause 1-AA isn’t supposed to be competition for us. OLine has no consistency either and is not deep at all! Special Ed Teams is just that RETARDED!!! C’mon Warriors give us something to cheer about besides OSU’s kicker suckin @ss!!!

  268. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:45 am

Ok, more than half of us knew about South Florida, but none of us picked Maryland…

  269. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:46 am

I think it’s a good thing we are a second half team. I hope and pray that the same can’t be said about OSU!

  270. NYUH September 13, 2008 11:47 am

Ok, offense will get its groove. special teams will cover and kick. Hawaii does get the ball to start the second half.

  271. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:47 am

Oh my gosh!!! bywhoo 49 UCLA 0.

  272. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:48 am

Aunty Ronnie, I’m in the same boat…nowadays College Football is so unpredictable you never know who’s going to win.

  273. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:49 am

and East Caroina is losing to Tulane in the 4th!

    Let’s go Pirates, LET’S GO!!!

  274. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:49 am

I hate to say it but BYWho is legit this year…

Warriors, Regroup, Focus, Get it Done!!!

  275. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:52 am

    In other news…

Prayers go out to those affected by Ike.

  276. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:54 am

Pauoa Boy – I just can’t bring myself to say that yet. I would rather cheer for Utah.

  277. Esme September 13, 2008 11:56 am

    *heavy sighing*

  278. Esme September 13, 2008 11:57 am

    Or should I say: tsighing.

  279. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 11:57 am

Ronnie – I hear you, my bro-in-law is all about them kitty cats, I hate them with a Passion so don’t worry I’m on your side…family gatherings are like WAR!!!

  280. Ronnie September 13, 2008 11:59 am

    Other Pigskin Pick picks:

    Purdue 20 – #16 Oregon 6
    S. Carolina 7 – #2 Georgia 6

Both games are in the 3rd quarter.

  281. A-House September 13, 2008 12:02 pm

Much was said about OSU’s front 7 being first time starters, but they are pushing our Oline around. Several times, Estes or Ginlack or Lafu have been pancaked on the initial surge pushing them back almost to where Gruanke is standing.

Other than the first drive, Warriors look totally out of synch including Grasso and Kelley. Receivers dropping balls is not helping either.

UH offensive play calling have to be questioned.
Hoping for a better showing in the 2nd half.

  282. A-House September 13, 2008 12:05 pm

also, cannot understand why Warrior safeties are playing so far back, sitting or late reaction, while the receiver cuts into the zone and catches passes – especially Morales (#13).

com’on coaches – talk to the players.

  283. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:05 pm

So much for receiving the opening kickoff

  284. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:06 pm

Hey Coach Rolo is it time to play merry-go-quarterbacks again? Graunke this ain’t frikkin Weber St. stop floating the f**kin ball…remind me of Timmy Chang!

  285. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:09 pm

Here we go TD for OSU how much you wanna bet?

  286. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:09 pm

I have a feeling that Tyler’s throwing hand is hurt. I noticed one play where he was hit after a pass and was holding his right hand/wrist. He hasn’t thrown well since.

  287. bb September 13, 2008 12:11 pm

    i miss herman fraizer’s schedules

  288. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:11 pm

Knew it…OSU is making this game look way to easy…

Did the Warriors know they had a game today or what? They sure are fooling the crap out of me!

  289. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 12:13 pm

    @x>kn{vg $/*t m**f@ fxc/a!

    👿 😈

  290. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:13 pm

bb – LMAO haha thanks for the laugh that was funny!

  291. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:15 pm

Why are we going for it on 4th?!

  292. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:16 pm

Graunke is probably not going to say shit the whole game, then at the postgame interview will be like oh yeah I hurt my hand during the game and it affected my throws blah blah blah…I mean do you really think he wants to give up his starting spot after he just got it and have a minor injury if there is one take him out of the game. I bet he’ll probably tuff it out then complain about it when they f**kin lose the game! C’MON WARRIORS LETS F**KIN GET IT TOGETHER!!!

  293. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:18 pm

BHF2 – that reminds me of that cartoon character that just says, “ruzzer frezzer frezzer ruzzer…”

  294. Bucknut330 September 13, 2008 12:19 pm

    ouch 28 – 7.

  295. bb September 13, 2008 12:20 pm

c’mon people admit it….everybody here misses Herman Fraizer’s scheduling right about now.

    go bows.

  296. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:21 pm

At least my bcs buster is still alive.

Just trying to find a siver lining to this game. Here’s another: we can still be WAC champs and go to the Hawai’i Bowl if the Warriors can just pull it together!

  297. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 12:22 pm

    C’mon Warriors!!!

This is way way way no fun!

  298. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:23 pm

    Let’s see…

Our Defense is supposed to be the face of the team this year right? I didn’t know that meant putting them in tough situations each time they take the field. Is there an agreement with the Retard Teams Unit to let the opponent get good field position so the D can prove how good they are or something, cause obviously non of us got that f**kin memo!

  299. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:23 pm

bb – only problem is that this IS the fumbler’s schedule.

  300. scott September 13, 2008 12:24 pm

you are right. funaki warming up. staff attending to graunke’s hand

  301. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:26 pm

The D has been on the field almost TWICE as long as the O. Even men of stone will get tired!

  302. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:28 pm

Funaki your turn to make something happen…I guess we need to get used to this f**kin rope-a-dope action at QB this year. So has our original starter Rausch fallen off the depth chart or what? Good job Coach Rolo…pffft!!!

  303. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:30 pm

if OSU’s kicker misses this one then he really sucks

  304. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:31 pm

The OSU punter makes the FG?

  305. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:31 pm

    he made it WOW…

Lets go Funaki, make it happen it ain’t over yet!

  306. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:32 pm

    I miss Colt!

  307. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:33 pm

Nice catch by Washington for a first down.

  308. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:34 pm

    Next pass to OSU. Yikes!

I wonder if the D starts sharing their frustration with the O… Or are they just to tired?

  309. Jay September 13, 2008 12:35 pm

    Let’s go Funaki!

  310. bb September 13, 2008 12:35 pm

I miss June. I miss Reinbold. I miss Colt the most though.

  311. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:36 pm

I think Colt spoiled us and it’ll be a long while before someone like him comes along. He and the Fab 4 were special for sure!

  312. scott September 13, 2008 12:36 pm

    Alright, time to go study.

  313. cavewarrior September 13, 2008 12:36 pm

    funaki int….beaver 7…REALLY heavy tsai-ing

  314. FloridaTed September 13, 2008 12:36 pm

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

With great sadness I have to proclaim the obvious.

We don’t have an offense this year, at least not yet. This is very depressing.

  315. Jay September 13, 2008 12:36 pm

  316. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:37 pm

So is it bad if half a bottle of 151 is gone???

  317. bb September 13, 2008 12:39 pm

Our defense SUCKS. Our special teams SUCK. Our new offense SUCKS. We don’t have a QB yet. Dan Kelly has missed 3 field goals already this season…..

    im sorry. just frustrated.

  318. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:39 pm

Is it just me or can you not tell everytime UH wants to run the ball… so predictable how the QB and RB are lined up…

  319. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 12:40 pm

I going have one private talk with my frenz.

da team playing like day way outta dare league.

  320. addahknowjoe September 13, 2008 12:41 pm

  321. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 12:41 pm

i’m tinkin dis is a management problem!

  322. bb September 13, 2008 12:41 pm

If the athletic department is listening hows about making discounted season tickets now? or making discounted PPV packages now to those who did not originally purchase them.

  323. scott September 13, 2008 12:42 pm

yeah, your liver might be a fatty mess. ease up there on the alcohol buddy.

  324. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:42 pm

So is it bad if half a bottle of 151 is gone???

Only if you drank it all at once 😉

  325. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:43 pm

bb – Don’t be sorry, you can’t deny the truth…

  326. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 12:44 pm

I am so glad to be in da confines of my house, yelling at da tv,

wat happened to using da chevy and hitting da odda guy from behind? i taut dat suppose to be in da playbook!

  327. Mad Dog September 13, 2008 12:45 pm

There is still one more quarter to play? sigh…

  328. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:45 pm

I hope we get it together before the start of WAC play. I want to see them win in boise and fresno!

  329. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:45 pm

Nah, not all at once…only one swig here another there, I should be good…haha

  330. bb September 13, 2008 12:46 pm

    Von Appen started off 0-3
    McMackin started 1-2

    life could be worse…
at least next week we can’t lose.

  331. cavewarrior September 13, 2008 12:46 pm

dumping da beer/wine…time for crown – straight up & keep it coming.
    GO Warriors!!!

  332. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:46 pm

C’mon boys, play to the end dayumit!

  333. bb September 13, 2008 12:48 pm

I seriously wonder at what point will the natives start getting restless where attendance will drop and people will start getting genuinely pissed. I think we are far from that point but if there are more and more games like this in which we were expected to be a little more respectable then who knows whats gonna happen….

  334. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:49 pm

June started 1-2 as well and we still were WAC Co-champions!

    Still get chance!!!

  335. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:50 pm

    For the season at least.

  336. Unkanesson September 13, 2008 12:50 pm

    Aloha kakou,
Whew, listening to BC & RK — this is no fun!!
BHF2 — I’ve been getting a similar feeling — Special Teams and Offense not functioning, resulting in Defense being set up in bad situations and having to spend too much time on the field. I think the coaching staff needs to take the responsitility. It SOUNDS like, since I can’t see the game, the offense has no scheme, they’re floundering, regardless of who’s at QB. Special Teams doesn’t seem to have a scheme too. Defense is good, but being asked to do too much, running out of gas at this point.
    Auwe!!

  337. Esme September 13, 2008 12:51 pm

OK, everyone, since Tsai-master’s working at the game and I appear to be the only staff on here right now … I’m going very geeentttly ask everyone to please remember to keep an eye on language and tone. I love every one of my fellow Tsaikos — you know I do, absolutely — and I don’t want anyone to get smu’d, OK? *offering hugs, bombers and green pom-poms all around*

  338. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:51 pm

Keao needs to learn how to tackle, stop trying to act like you big enough to hit people down cause you getting ran over dayumit…fundamentals boys c’mon!!!

  339. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:55 pm

Esme – Sorry, we are passionate of our football team but are in disgust at how they are playing. I think if I were at the game in Corvallis I would be escorted out of the stadium, so I will just escort myself outside and regroup for a few minutes…sorry

  340. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 12:57 pm

Aunty Ronnie – I think we’re going to have to pre-flight before Fresno St. this is too much to handle…

  341. Mad Dog September 13, 2008 12:58 pm

It would be nice to see some consistancy. A long drive. Hard hitting. Smart playing. anything. I need something to be optimistic.

  342. Ronnie September 13, 2008 12:58 pm

Pauoa Boy – I hear you!

  343. Esme September 13, 2008 12:59 pm

No worries, PB. You KNOW I’m yelling at my TV right now! 😆

  344. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:00 pm

Hope OSU plays nice and just runs out the clock…oh wait nevermind they might run all over us and score again.

  345. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:03 pm

Esme – If only we had webcam chat to see everyone reacting to what is happening today would be more entertaining than this game… 🙂

  346. A-House September 13, 2008 1:07 pm

so sad that none of the “units” played well and made OSU look good

what will the coaches say now?

    what will the players do?

what a get ass kicking game for the Warriors

however, Coach mack’s stated goal is to win the WAC and go to a bowl game, but if they play like today, San Jose will smile all the way home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  347. Unkanesson September 13, 2008 1:11 pm

There is one point to be made as a possible consolation…
Sports Illustrated had OSU at #18 in their preseason poll, so this is a team that, despite its lack of success in the first two games (on the road against tough competition), is still a quality BCS team. We may have been buoyed to an unrealistic extent by the success of our offense in the 2nd half against Weber.
We aren’t at OSU’s level this year, as we’ve been in the past 3 years. Our coaching staff needs to get things organized before we start WAC play.
The season isn’t over by any means — we can still succeed at the WAC level.
    Onipa’a!!

  348. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:11 pm

    Howzit Mr. A-House…

That’s all we can hope for at this point is a WAC Championship and hopefully a Bowl Game. For a team that still has the WAC Championship trophy in there possession, it seems like they don’t know that or forgot how to play like a Championship team. Today’s game was disastrous, nothing notable to comment on, cause even the “D” got there okole kicked today!

  349. Unkanesson September 13, 2008 1:12 pm

Re: the Frazier schedules — too bad we couldn’t have had this year’s schedule last year, and last year’s this year. Oh well….

  350. Ronnie September 13, 2008 1:15 pm

In just 3 short years, we have gone from a fan base hoping to have a winning season to a fan base thinking anything less than a conference championship is unaceptable. I know we Tsaikos will back the team – and show up for the games – no matter what. I just hope the rest of the fans do.

  351. addahknowjoe September 13, 2008 1:18 pm

This is the very time we truly see the kind of fans we are. What kind of character we all possess.

Do we whimp out and go negative when the going gets tough? Or do we stick together through thick and thin.

I’ve been on many losing teams. And I personally know the loneliest time is when you losing. Nobody is your fan. Right now is when our team needs us the most. No bail on them now.

Eh, when we win, we win together! If we lose, we all gotta lose together too!

    Take our medicine. Stay together!

    NO GIVE UP!!!!

  352. Unkanesson September 13, 2008 1:19 pm

Okay folks, time for me to pack it in and get ready for work.
Hang in there, we got a week to R&R and figure out the lessons learned from our pre-season. The REAL seasons starts in 2 weeks. New start, one snap…
    A hui hou kakou!

  353. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:21 pm

Coach Ron Lee needs to get this offense together cause this ain’t St. Louis High School! The game against Weber St. doesn’t prove crap to me. A 1-AA school shouldn’t even be in our league, so having success against them and being happy about it, is ridiculous. Nothing against Weber St. but you know what I mean. Lots of work to be done…

QB’s need to learn how to throw to open WR’s and not the other team

WR’s need to learn how to catch the dayum ball

OL need to learn how to block somebody and not Casper the Ghost

Special Ed Teams need to get back to basics and fundamentals of coverages

  354. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 1:21 pm

Da coaches gotta go watch da Cholitas akshun in Boliva. check out da new edition of National Georgraphic, September 2008 issue. look at da face ah da titas. das at least wat da coaches should be lookin like! 😯

  355. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:25 pm

We never going give up on the team…we survived the VonAppen years we can survive this too. Of course the Warrior Boys are our family but it seems like something is wrong with this team. No worry A-Joe we not bandwagon fans like most of our island fans are! Win or Lose, I will always Bleed Warrior Green Blood!!!

  356. Ronnie September 13, 2008 1:28 pm

    A-Joe – agree with you 100%

    7 down
    8 UP!

  357. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 1:35 pm

One week to get it together, practice smart boys, no wasted reps, need to come back with a vengeance and wreak havoc on our WAC opponents. The Season is 0-0 right now, time to settle down, learn, adjust, practice, come out with guns blazing! We are still WAC Champions time to play like Champs!

  358. BowsForever September 13, 2008 1:37 pm

Congratulations to OSU on the win. As for the Warriors, one snap and clear. Tons of things to work on over the bye week.

  359. The Mad Cat September 13, 2008 1:44 pm

Ooohh… this one hurts! Special teams play was simply awful and the Warriors ALLOWED the Beavers to take the momentum away and keep it for 3 and half quarters. I think Tyler was having trouble with his throwing hand since the middle of the first quarter (looked like he was having trouble even holding on to the rock, much less throwing it well). When the offense didn’t click, the team lost spirit.. bad thing. I think putting in and keeping Inoke in the second half, when it became overly obvious Tyler couldn’t play was a bad call on the Coaches part – he just doesn’t make the reads fast enough, and all couldn’t motivate the team enough to pick themselves out of the hole they were in. At that point in the game (it was realistically out of reach), I would of put either Greg or Brett in at QB… at the very least give them some more stick-time against a DIV 1 defense. I hope Tyler’s hand isn’t anything serious… I still think he’s the best choice right now for starting QB. Our special teams definitely needs some serious work (Coach Malloe???).

  360. Darren September 13, 2008 1:44 pm

Well…it looks like we’ve got a lot of work to do over the next couple of weeks. I’m thinking that everyone, from fans to players and coaches, don’t EVER want to feel like this again. We’re never going to physically steamroll anyone, so we need to out-prepare, out-smart and out-discipline every team we play.

We didn’t do any of that today. But we get our butts off the ground and start getting ready for the next game. Now it’s on to the WAC season…we gotta improve in all aspects of the game. We’ve got the talent…it just needs to come together. Can’t wait for SJSU. I’m hoping for 40,000 screaming fans and a chance to lay a butt-kicking on someone else.

  361. Buffoman September 13, 2008 1:47 pm

    Wow! Where is the team?

I guess it may be akin to what JJ had when his team struggled a few years back. One thing for sure, this game does nothing to help UH with recruiting.

Or maybe we can tell the potential recruits that the cupboard is lean and going bare at the end of the season and that they (recruits) could come in and start right away. I’d like to find some silver lining in this team.

    Scary.

I almost hate to see what Pat Hill will do to us when we go up to Fresno. If it starts to get ugly, he’ll make sure that it’ll stay ugly and get uglier.

  362. KonaGirl September 13, 2008 1:49 pm

Some days, things go right and some days, things go wrong. We’re still defending WAC Champs and Nevada lost big time today too. Let’s see how Boise and Fresno do tonight before we start getting worried.

Remember, half of all the teams that play on Saturday lose.

  363. ryan September 13, 2008 1:51 pm

Not sure if anyone will agree with me but Ron Lee should not be the offensive coordinator. I’m very disappointed by this game and the play calling.

  364. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 1:52 pm

    Ho boy

I don’t tink of myself as a fair weather fan! I am trying to be positive for the bradda Warriors, an
imho the coaches gotta do samoa fo motivate dem for play above their heads!!! wen day playahz akken depressed, to me dats a coachin prolem.

  365. cavewarrior September 13, 2008 1:56 pm

A-Joe, agreed…I’ll be at our stadium every game, cheering till the final second… we shall improve week to week…

    GO Warriors!!!

  366. LizKauai (iPhone) September 13, 2008 1:59 pm

dang, no signal again from the field.
    Tsai.
We sat in quiet dismay. I joked a little and made Chain saw sounds when the Beavers were on 3rd down.
    Headiing to kaukau now.

  367. Hoohiki September 13, 2008 2:01 pm

I just got home from coaching my son’s soccer game and just finished perusing through the posts. I thought #347 and #351 summed it up the best for the Warriors. Tuff, tuff loss. I firmly believe coach Mac and his entourage planned and prepared for this game, but the execution just didn’t materialize.
It’s difficult for us fans to watch the team lose, but to watch them hang their heads after a loss is even harder. For most of these boys, football is their life right now and losses are, well, losses which hurt. So we should give applause to their efforts, support their spirits, encourage to improve; get their confidence up so that come Monday they should’ve recovered and be prepared for the constructive critiques and tough motivation, aka “yelling”.

PB…you have enough passion for all of us. I’ll take you on my team anytime.

  368. al September 13, 2008 2:02 pm

well. i haven’t given up on this team.

remember we were competing with a pac10 team that was at home in a must win situation. once again you could see that the level of talent was superior to our team.

graunke was obviously in pain from what appeared to be either the second or third series of the game. you could tell by the way he would immobilize his right hand as soon as the play was over. his passes had no zip, it was tell tale.

let’s hope that we can mend the injuries and bruised egos by the start of the wac season. we lost another left tackle early in the game, our quarterback, first two running backs, etc.

    its early.

  369. Hoohiki September 13, 2008 2:08 pm

First, Alexander gets a toe problem…
Second, Rausch gets an arm strain..
    Third, Funaki gets a concussion…
    Fourth, Graunke hurts his wrist…

Lets see what Jon Medeiros can do…Didn’t he lead Kapolei to a winning season?

  370. Stretch September 13, 2008 2:09 pm

traffic out of corvallis is horrible!!!! almost as bad as the game

  371. Beaveready September 13, 2008 2:15 pm

Beaveready here. Thanks for the game and the fun interaction with UH fans. Good to see how youse support your team with enthusiasm.

Tough game today. Yes your Warriors got their asses kicked and didn’t seem to really play with a lot of heart. I was surprised at the lack of passing success you had. But you had zero rushing today too. With big Nate you guys were dangerous in 2006 so maybe that is the difference.

Hang in there. things will get better. Oregon State played much better defense today (after the first few series they really started flying around) and it may be that we are a better team than our 0-2 start and you guys have a REALLY hard schedule.

Hope you all Murder Fresno Suck.

  372. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 2:15 pm

    Hoohiki,
Either that or da kine what’s his name Torres from Kahuku play QB too? I no mean to get nawts but cannot help sometimes. If you think I’m passionate about our team wait until you watch one of my football games. I feel like Blaze Soares and Impact anything in site!

  373. Buffoman September 13, 2008 2:18 pm

I watched the game and do not believe that the pac 10 personnel was so much better than ours that, that is what made the difference. It was when one very important segment of team play absolutely did not perform (the special team) that we lost the fourth element; momentum. Our boys on defense can stay with most mid level “major” BCS teams, but when they were put in the position they were put in today by an unprepared special team effort, it was really almost too much to ask of the defense to keep the team in the game.

The offense was not too bad, but I agree with others when the team “went predictable”. That made the line, a patch work one, have to work in overdrive and very quickly the gears were stripped, a missed block here, a false start there, a holding and the whole thing went out of sync.

Play calling is an art and taking nothing away from coach Ron, but one can see the difference between JJ and many others. JJ could make Weildon look great and in the course of doing so, help elevate the offense. Coach Ron has to get to that place or we can never be a team that can play from behind with the “big Boys. We can do it against lower WAC teams or the Weber State caliber ones, but we would not be able to replicate what happened last year. Some “blame” if you want to go there could also be leveled at coach Rolo as his ability to understand his quarterbacks may not have the same depth as did coach Morrison. It not comparing, it’s just different.

Like anything else, “chemistry” needs to be something that is felt throughout the entire team, at the same time, in the same manner or teams become prone to miscues, mistakes and outcomes like we just witnessed.

A bye week is good, but maybe the huddle needs to start with some soul searching amongst the coaching staff, in private and then display the cohesive outcome with the team in the way practice is managed, personnel is handled and plays are called, as a team with chemistry.

We’ve got great kids on this team.

  374. BowsForever September 13, 2008 2:19 pm

Geez, at this rate, maybe _Santos_ will get some playing time!

  375. BowsForever September 13, 2008 2:23 pm

The beginning of the end of the game was the second offensive series for UH, IMHO. Tyler and Pilares on fire, and instead you rush the ball three times in a row for a 3-and-out. I really don’t get what was going on there.

  376. bulla September 13, 2008 2:23 pm

    ouch

tough loss, we got smoked in every facet of the game…..back to the drawing board and make some serious adjustments…..long season ahead.

  377. Koauka September 13, 2008 2:23 pm

Thank goodness for the bye week. Back to the drawing board. Start all over again vs San Jose St.

What is really sad is some of the comments made here today.

Just to let the haters know, I still would believe in Mack even 0-13.

  378. bulla September 13, 2008 2:25 pm

    bowsforever

you are right, 3 consecutive running plays that resulted in nothing, nada, kaka, doooooooo doooooooo….critical juncture, and the rest is history. switching of the moooooo mentum at that point…..ouch

  379. Garret September 13, 2008 2:30 pm

Just got back from the stadium and I only have a few minute online before we have to go to dinner. I’m sorry that I’m posting without reading, but I will catch up with the blog late tonight.

    A few thoughts:

    1. I was disappointed with some of the Hawaii fans at the game. In the first quarter when the score was 7-7, a whole bunch of people in my section (212) said out loud that it was too hot and they left their seats to go to watch the game on a TV somewhere air conditioned. The score was tied and it was the first quarter! Why come all the way from Hawaii if you aren’t going to watch the game? I sat through 9 seasons of Texas football and the temperature and humidity made today seem like nothing and I never left early…and then when the score became 21-7 in the second quarter, almost the entire row behind us left! I looked around and there were a LOT of Hawaii people that had either given up on the team or decided it was too hot and they had left.

    2. The Oregon State crowd was loud, but not nearly like the Georgia fans at the Sugar Bowl. I know that there is a big difference in a dome, but also the crowd is much smaller and the open ends of the stadium seem to leak noise. In my section I was by far the loudest person when Oregon State had the ball–and sometimes I was the only one chanting defense within earshot. That was the quietest I heard fans at any game.

    3. The special teams needs a LOT of work. Dan Kelly missed a FG (though the OSU kicker missed 3, which kept UH in the game). Grasso shanked at least one punt. At least 2 flags again on special teams! The punt and kick coverage units need a LOT of work…they have significantly regressed this season.

The good thing is that Mouton was awesome and extremely quick at picking his spot and going. The same people were blocking for both returners and Mouton gave UH at least 20 yards more on average of field position than Taylor. Taylor seemed to hesitate too much or take too long to get up to speed.

    4. Neither QB did well, but the running game was a bright spot. I thought that Pilares was by far the best RB for UH and made a difference. Trouble is, UH could not sustain drives with runs and needed to mix in passes, and the passing game was not clicking. Missed throws, dropped passes, etc.

The good thing is that I thought that the OL did well. Not only did they open some BIG holes for the RBs, but they gave the QBs more time than I had expected. On Tyler’s INT in the first drive of the second half, the OL gave him a *lot* of time and Tyler still threw it to a guy that was well covered–I saw another guy wide open on the outside. If the OL plays like that all season then UH will win 8 or 9 games.

    5. It seemed to me that OSU was able to run up the middle extremely effectively, and they had a good scheme to block Brashton. Also, they did a good job (particularly in the first half before the Mack and the coaches adjusted at halftime) of putting a man in motion and getting that guy open for a first down.

I thought that the play calling for UH was a little predictable, but I do not want to criticize the coaches. However, I was predicting the play before the snap based on the down, distance, and formation and was correct over 90% of the time. One time I was wrong was the QB bootleg they did with Inoke–that was a really good play call and I had guessed pass. However, there were times when you could tell UH wanted to establish the run, other times when you could tell that UH would use the shovel (a defensive player almost intercepted one for the second straight game), etc.

I still believe in this team and think that the coaching staff and players just need more time to get in sync. The OL also has to get healthy. The bye week is coming at a GOOD time and hopefully the Warriors will be back strong in the next game. I hope that the fans show up and support them, as the team will feed off the support!

  380. BowsForever September 13, 2008 2:34 pm

Hot? Really? Curran and Kekaula kept saying what a nice, 70s (Fahrenheit) kinda day it was. Or maybe they said it from a nicely chilled indoors press box, who knows.

  381. d1島 September 13, 2008 2:50 pm

    Tough game to watch.
Last season may have “spoiled” a few of us fans but I think today’s game probably wakes everyone up to the fact that we gotta forget about Colt and special unit awards and last-second heroics and sweetheart schedules.
A third of the season is done and the team is .333. Whatcha gonna do?
What kine “fan” you going be?
For eight months folks been saying:
    “Bless you, Mack.”
“Ron Lee’s offense this; Cal Lee’s defense that…”
    “Eat Gators.”
“Da uniforms dis, da colors dat.”

    Now we get:
    “Fire da Special Teams Coach.”
    “Da OC is no good.”
    “Da players not motivated.”
…and other things that folks seem to cannot wait fo’ throw in da coaches faces.

Take a step back, folks. Was a nice ride for awhile but now you can see the team really needs support. This team no mo’ as many NFL prospects as before; the coaches haven’t been together for 5-7 years as a core group; and the schedule this year is brutal. 1-2 is what a lot of folks were thinking anyway at this point. If what Garret is saying about fans in his section was happening in the other UH sections as well, that’s really sad.
The team need real fans fo’ show up in two weeks. They going need the help for defend the WAC title. They going need the help fo’ be bowl eligible. I plan to be there. Who’s in?

  382. bulla September 13, 2008 2:53 pm

    d1

you’re right, lot of fair weather action going on….either way, they’re still Hawaii’s team and we gotta back them up. take the good and the bad, just be ready to do your best every time!

  383. Pauoa Boy September 13, 2008 2:55 pm

I don’t care what you all think of the comments I make, stop sending me stupid emails to watch what I say and all that gay chit! I’m a grown @ss man, If you don’t like it, don’t read it. I ain’t no patty-cake bake you a cake type of guy. I tell it like it is, if cannot handle oh well too bad so sad. I will support our Warrior Team regardless and let them know it when they are screwing up too. Cannot be happy with the type of effort they put forth today, but still I will wear my Warrior Green colors proudly! I swear some of you are way too sensitive and need to get off my jock!!! If you want to have me SMU’d so be it and kiss my @ss!!!

The potential is there. I hope Graunke hand is okay and heals. I still believe Graunke is the go to guy. Like many I was disappointed with the play calls. Especially on offense. Hope the team regroups and performs better next game.

    I’m out!!!

  387. Non-fair weather fan September 13, 2008 3:15 pm

    Very well said D1.

I agree that we were “spoiled” the last few years with the well-oiled machine of Colt and co. Just gotta give the skill guys some time. Think about it, we are pretty much playing with last years’ 2nd string guys at the skill positions. We aren’t using any of the JC guys brought in to ease the pain of the loss of the dread-heads. Can’t expect them to be as good as the last 2 years just yet. Also, it just so happens we had to play 2 BCS teams on the road to start the season. Cannot jump off the bandwagon as we saw what the offense could do in the 2nd half of Weber St.

Pauoa Boy: dude, you need to cool it man.

  388. bulla September 13, 2008 3:15 pm

gotta love the warriors…either way. PB, I hear your frustration…it sucks…but life goes on.

one snap and clear, regroup and refocus. pau already, gotta get better

  389. Kazz September 13, 2008 3:30 pm

    WHAT A PILAU “EFFORT”….

Either way, game is pau and next is two weeks to IMPROVE.

No excuses, there appeared to be no effort at all for most of the game. While the score against Florida was worse, we looked better in certain areas and Oregon State can’t even compare to Florida.

I hope AhSoon, Libre, and Graunke are ok though. The bye week shall help with this.

Oh well, after work I’m off to Wahine Volleyball… need to end today on a good note.

  390. always local September 13, 2008 3:31 pm

well…just got back from the game @ reser stadium. i was seated right behind the u.h. bench. what even the beaver fans noticed next to me was the lack of intensity. they looked broken right about a couple minutes into the third quarter…still proud to wear green, though. hope the team can come together and develop some strong leadership.

  393. Kazz September 13, 2008 3:33 pm

    BTW…

    11-2 ain’t bad of a season right? 🙂

First things first… gotta stick with Graunke, we cannot be changing QBs game in and game out, that usually spells disaster for a lot of teams.

    Per the Advertiser:

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080913/BREAKING02/80913048/-1/SPORTSFRONT

Quarterback Tyler Graunke, Hawai’i’s third starter this season, injured his hand and wrist on his right (throwing) arm in the third quarter, coach Greg McMackin said after a 45-7 loss to Oregon State today.

Warrior left tackle Keith AhSoon, running backs Leon Wright-Jackson and Daniel Libre also suffered injuries during the game.

I’m really glad we have a bye before WAC play starts!

I was at Best Buy this morning, and someone came up to tell me he liked my Warrior shirt! He had lots at home, but didn’t have the one I had. It was very cool to see another Warrior fan in Yorba Linda!

  399. Ronnie September 13, 2008 3:43 pm

I think just in case won the guessing contest, right?

  400. Jason September 13, 2008 3:44 pm

According to UH’s post-game notes, the Warriors have finished 1-2 in five of the past six seasons (last year being the exception). So of course, it’s not over yet. Those teams went 11-3 (7-1), 5-7 (4-4), 8-5 (4-4), 9-5 (6-2), and 10-4 (7-1). But there are a lot of things with this year’s team that need fixing. Before the season started, I thought a 7-6 (5-3) or 8-5 (6-2) season would be really good, but if we continue to play like we did today, it will get ugly.

That said, it’s imperative that we stand united behind the Warriors, and continue to support them. Hopefully they’ll get everything sorted out, and it’ll be smoother sailing the rest of the way. But yeah, it is frustrating. Realistically, I’m sure 1-2 is what some of us expected, but I don’t think many are happy with the way it was done.

  401. Jason September 13, 2008 3:50 pm

BTW, it was very nice at Ige’s. Rocky Savaiigaea and his family were sitting at the table next to us. I think he was blushing when the two beautiful young ladies known as the Tsaiko Twins took a picture with him. 😛

On a positive note, how about David Veikune and Joshua Leonard? Solomon Elimimian had some nice plays early in the game that made him stand out. Ryan Mouton did a good job on returns. Kealoha Pilares did a good job running, considering the predictability of the playcalling. Michael Washington had seven catches.

  402. d1島 September 13, 2008 4:05 pm

Good to hear you folks had some fun at Ige’s. I’m sure most of that happened before about 10:30 or so 🙁

Will look forward to seeing that pic of the Twins and Rocky; will look forward MORE to seeing Rocky back on the field! 😉

    always local,
    Thanks for the insight.
Hope all the folks in OR made it out of Corvallis safely. It’ll be interesting to hear what others have to say about the experience in Reser Stadium today.

  403. d1島 September 13, 2008 4:16 pm

    Yikes!
Stephen reports that not only are Graunke and Ah Soon hurt but Libre re-injured his ankle and LWJ aggravated the arch injury.

  404. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2008 4:22 pm

Tough game. Somebody wins, somebody loses. That’s the way it is. It’s times like this when our unconditional support for the whole program is needed most.

The team needs to keep its head up and not look back. I feel, as do others here, that the Warriors can still meet their goals for the season.

Tyler looked like he was hurt early, and it affected his game.

The bye week will help the team to come back stronger.

    Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  405. curveball September 13, 2008 4:24 pm

I really wonder about having Ah Soon, Libre, and LWJ play today on those previous injuries. If they did not play with the by they would have had 3 good weeks to really heal up well and be good and ready for WAC…clearly they were not ready…

  414. gibu September 13, 2008 5:17 pm

Hey everyone. IMO when AhSoon went out the line couldn’t open the holes as big as they were earlier. They did play better than I thought though.

-Kelly missed his field goal because they rushed to get the kick off in time. When I saw him set up I knew he was going to miss. He usually does this turn thing presnap.

-I had high hopes on Taylor returning kicks but he seems to run sideline to sideline so he tends to get tackled after short returns. I say go with Lane because I haven’t noticed any big plays from him on offense.

-Secondary sure can’t play well in zone so why not go man? I constantly notice how the corners are 7-10 yards away from the receiver on 3rd and short. That’s why the slants work well. Once playaction occurs the D has to go on a man because receivers/TE will just sit in the hole of the zone. Why not cover man to man so they just don’t sit around?

-Pilares deserves to stay at RB. He needs playing time.

-D played well, but just got tired after having to play so long and in their own territory.

-I still have high hopes for this team. Got to keep the WAC title in HI.

  424. FloridaTed September 13, 2008 5:42 pm

Let’s all calm down, return to earth and put everything in perspective.

The sky has not fallen, yes we looked bad in two tough road games and the team kind of gave up, or so it seemed, but please, do not blame the defense, they are far too overworked to still be at full capacity.

We all knew that we lost a ton of offensive fire power and that it would take time to get in sync, but we all dreamed of a 2007 repeat. We have shown flashes of what’s possible, but really, let’s not forget 2005, when even the great Colt had a lot to learn.

Look at Ohio State, look at UCLA, neither of these teams is nearly as bad as they looked. Momentum on the road is absolutely vital and once lost, almost impossible to regain. We looked great in the first Quarter, but now that we know Tyler got injured, it explains a lot and the offense is not dead yet.

Funaki is not suited to this offense and we should use the by-week to develop the JC’s more.

In two weeks a new season will begin, we have time to heal and get better. Let’s all be behind our Warriors and refrain from throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Re-birth of the Warriors on 9-27-08.

  425. Jason September 13, 2008 5:43 pm

gibu: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about going to man. My personal philosophy is to go with man, but it’s risky too. If you go man-2, then the pressure is on your defensive linemen to perform cause you’re limited in your blitz packages (five free defenders against five eligible receivers). Go with man-1, and you put the pressure on your deep safety. Go to man-0, and you put pressure on each defender cause he has no help.

Coach Mack said at Nā Koa that he gave Weber State those slants in the first half in order to prevent the big play. He did adjust in the second half to a similar zone with inside containment, but it was still zone. Thankfully, Weber State’s passing system was simple, or they could have burned us downfield.

So that’s a good question to ask — when down so many points, do you say Heck with it and go to man, take the risk and hope your defense can make stops? Do you stick with the bend-but-hopefully-don’t-break zone, betting that you can work your blitz package to get pressure faster? Or do you go with a man-zone combo. I’m not talking man underneath with zone up top, I’m saying man coverage on certain players and zone in the rest of the field. For example, if the tight end is burning you, maybe put a linebacker or safety on him the rest of the game and adjust the zones accordingly. This is something to think about, and I don’t think there is an easy answer.

  426. bighilofan2 September 13, 2008 6:03 pm

    Wassup Doc,

The team needs all of us. i’m tinkin going to educate the public on this Sadowski Ching Cooke Field Fix stuff. person to person. use a petition, addressed to whom it may concern, go around to the Tail Gates, ask them if they know about the issues. going take the whole day, and go start the conversation by asking “is anyone here related to Dennis Sadowski” and then explain da view, and before you know it, we going get one pile peeps who going make their own minds up if dis guy is fo us or not. das a good plan. anodda good plan is a newspapah ad.

i tole you, we going win this thing in the public arena!

    Off to Wahine Volleyball now…

***IF any of our Warriors are up late reading the blog***

You boys will always make us proud, however after today’s performance, now is a time for all of you to “man-up” and look into the eyes of you fellow Warriors and draw some strength for the rest of the season.

I don’t know where the passion was today and why it was so easily extinguished after the first and ONLY TD.

The point is, we had it, even if only for a few fleeting moments, we had it and Oregon State didn’t.

    Find it and keep it.

    From our end, know this:

THE REAL FANS WILL BE IN THE STANDS CHEERING AND BELIEVING IN ALL OF YOU!!!

After-game observations during kaukau: Our SOS is set up to have alternating strong and weak years. It might be better if we met Fresno and Boise at home on alternating years.

  432. Garret September 13, 2008 7:10 pm

I’m borrowing someone else’s computer since I cannot get my computer online for any length of time at this home. The Advertiser article makes it clear that Sol felt that the D lost its spirit and slowed down because of that.

“We didn’t finish at all. Our morale went down, our defensive speed went down as the game went on,” Hawai’i linebacker Solomon Eliminian said. “At the same time, that’s our job as a defensive unit, to stop them no matter what.”

  433. Garret September 13, 2008 7:13 pm

If AhSoon has an ACL injury then he’s done for the season…I hope that the results find that something minor instead is the problem!

AhSoon suffered a possible ACL injury to his left knee in the first quarter. He was on crutches after the game and will have an MRI on Monday.

  434. Garret September 13, 2008 7:20 pm

    Liz,

Unfortunately, UH does *not* set its WAC schedule–that is set by the conference. In order to have UH alternate road years for BSU and Fresno State, the WAC schedule would have to be adjusted just for UH’s benefit and either BSU or Fresno State would have to have the unbalanced schedule thing. Plus, the transition year would be tough because someone would have to play a team twice on the road.

Unless UH can convince BSU and Fresno State to do something that is for UH’s benefit and actually could be bad for their schedules, then the setup will stay like it is. If the WAC does that for UH, then other teams will want the WAC to set up their schedules in an ideal manner for football…it could get to be a mess.

Football is also cyclical, so the top 3 teams in the conference could change. If Pat Hill leaves Fresno State, or if Nevada or SJSU gets really good (UH has road games at SJSU and Nevada when they get Fresno State and BSU at home), then the schedule will be balanced again.

  435. Lady who hit Mr. Tsai September 13, 2008 7:21 pm

This was the first UH game I’ve seen this year.
Is it just me, or does UH look a step slower this year?
Even after the missed FG’s, Oregon seemed fired up, whereas Hawaii
    seemed pretty quiet.
SJ St. coming up, Tomey will be ready, UH must get the spark back.

  436. Garret September 13, 2008 7:28 pm

I would like to give a shout out to Jim Donovan. I saw him at the tailgate and he did an awesome job at circulating and talking to everyone who wanted to talk. That friendlyness and warmth will open checkbooks and get people to work even harder on behalf of UH.

JD also climbed up to Section 212 during halftime to check on the UH fans and see how things were up there. That was not something that he would be expected to do and it was HOT and it was a long walk up stairs for him to visit my section. I was impressed by that!

I walked up to him during halftime and shook his hand and told him that I thought he was doing a great job. I didn’t identify myself since I’m not important–I’m just a typical UH fan. I maybe should have said that I was a Tsaiko, but JD knows that he has a lot of support here. One reason why I walked up to him was that he had walked all the way up the stairs to our section and NONE of the UH fans came any way near him to say “hi” or anything! It was sad to see him give so much effort and just get ignored like that, so I wanted to give him some encouragement.

By the way, JD could see that by halftime the UH section in 212 was pretty deserted. This was before the 2nd half kickoff, so lots of people were staying cool before kickoff. The trouble is that most of them were still not in their seats when the 2nd half started–UH was only down 21-7 and they had the ball first!

  437. Garret September 13, 2008 7:35 pm

I made it a point to look all around several sections that had UH fans. I think that by far the majority were wearing green, which was nice. 15-20% were wearing black, which was fine except that Oregon State was wearing black. At least the black blends with the green. 5% or so were wearing white, which was unfortunate for the color scheme. I also saw a bunch of UH fans wearing gray, blue, and other colors for some reason.

They passed out free t-shirts today–bright orange OSU shirts–to fans as they entered the stadium. A lot of UH fans took them as souveniers, which was fine (I gave the one I took to the family that I’m staying with since Melissa grad from OSU). Unfortunately, the sun was scorching hot and there was no cloud cover or shade in the UH section. So, the UH fans held the free t-shirts over their heads or covered themselves with the t-shirt to protect themselves from the sun. That made a LOT of UH fans look orange! My wife and others watching TV were wondering why the whole stadium seemed like solid orange…one reason was that a LOT of UH fans in the UH section were holding up the orange t-shirts to block the sun!

  438. Garret September 13, 2008 7:38 pm

By the way, I saw someone post that the radio report said that it wasn’t hot at the stadium. In the 70s? That is wrong! According to the weather reports I saw, it was around 85 at the high and it was in the 80s for most of the game. The bad thing is that there was NO wind until late in the 2nd half, so there was no cooling breeze.

  439. Garret September 13, 2008 7:48 pm

Last post and I’ll get off the blog since I’ve got to gather the quotes…not a pleasant thing to do after this game!

Shout out to Larry Price’s nephew Elliott (I think that was his name). He, his wife, and his mother-in-law sat at our table during the tailgate and he was great to talk with! He played for UH (he started at UH one season before Coach Tomey took over), was a graduate assistant who coached JD, and has been involved with UH with the LWC.

It was great to be able to talk with him about old times and the current team, learn his insight into how JJ ran practices and his philosophies, and to hear more about how Colt was just mobbed in Hawaii wherever he went and how the Hawaii people helped cause Colt’s weight loss as last season went on. Poor Colt couldn’t get a break anywhere he went and those demands had to have taken a toll on Colt. Funny to hear about how Colt’s girlfriend was nagging Colt about his weight, especially when she saw photos of Colt before last season…before the demands of the season and the fans resulted in Colt getting so thin.

Elliott was with Pictures Plus until recently, so he was involved with Colt’s autograph sessions. Interesting how Elliott had to get Colt’s Redskins jersey sent to someone in San Diego and then that person had to mail it to Pictures Plus since Washington wouldn’t ship to Hawaii.

  440. rainbow53 September 13, 2008 7:51 pm

Breakdowns in all facets, special teams is woeful once again, punting, kickoffs, coverages, the Warriors stunk, maybe the coach is too young and inexperienced, but we’ve had this problem for years so I don’t know what the answer is. San Jose is going to be a very tough game, especially if some of the injured are not ready,ie graunke!

  441. Garret September 13, 2008 7:56 pm

From the Corvallis Gazette-Times, there was a reason for their FG kicker’s problems.

The only setback was Justin Kahut missing three field goals. He hurt his hip on the first miss when he kicked the ground.

  442. Committed Road Warrior September 13, 2008 7:56 pm

Disparity in Time of Possession was rather large:

    UH—-22:33
    OSU–37:27

We can’t be keeping the D on the field that long and expect to win games. They played well early on but you knew they were going to tire out eventually.

  443. wafan September 13, 2008 7:57 pm

Hot? Heck, it was not all that hot. After your skin blistered and popped the pain nearly disappeared!

Shoot, I do not think I have ever felt that “burnt” in many years.

They will win or lose as a team.

Have to agree with Garret and others. The play calling was very conservative and predictable. Is it because of the players or coaches? Or a comibination of both?

Good to see familiar faces at breakfast and to put names to new faces. Food was good at Elmer’s, by the way.

Interestingly, only just got a message left several hours ago by BNS. SORRY!!! You missed a good dinner at the Mongolian Grill BBQ.

That is one of the nice things about Tsai-ko’s. We bounce back quickly — it is not a life-or-death situation. It is a game, for heavens sake. But we will support the teams and players with all our hearts and soul.

Back to Washington tomorrow. It should be a great drive — clear and hot. Geez! Fuel down here is inexpensive. $3.67/gallon for regular — I wonder how much less expensive Costco is? WOW!

  444. Committed Road Warrior September 13, 2008 7:59 pm

Wisconsin squeaked by Fresno…..barely; Final Score 13-10
UNLV shocks Arizona State in OT; 23-20…..surely takes much of the luster off of next week’s matchup with Georgia.
Everyone by now surely saw the goose egg by UCLA versus BYU.

  445. Garret September 13, 2008 8:01 pm

Oregon State’s D says that they felt they turned the game around on UH’s second drive when they stopped Libre for a 5-yard-loss on 3rd-and-1. They were looking for something to get them going and they said that stopped UH there got going.

  446. Jason September 13, 2008 8:05 pm

I wonder about that predictability. The Warriors aren’t using new players on offense, so we can still utilize June Jones’ plays if they want. But it seems to me that they stick with the basic R&S plays, and the defenses either react quicker knowing what the typical breaks are, or they mask their coverage to dictate to the offense what routes to run. With June Jones, he was so adept at recognizing what defenses were doing that he could work with his players (particularly Colt and the trio of veteran receivers) to make adjustments sand-lot style.

  447. Pride. September 13, 2008 8:13 pm

Coach Mack’s goals have always been to graduate our players and to win the WAC championship.

  448. Pride. September 13, 2008 8:16 pm

So Fresno is no longer in the runnung to be a BCS buster. Too bad..

  449. Pride. September 13, 2008 8:18 pm

Fresno will end up with at least two losses this year.

  452. SteveM September 13, 2008 8:27 pm

A disappointing day, but I believe that Mac and the Warriors will be ready for the WAC season. I’ve reset the countdown clock to San Jose State!

Peaches and I just recovered from severe polynesian paralysis. Didn’t think we ate that much…but I guess eating through the entire halftime and most of the 3rd quarter added up. 🙁 Went to support my cousins’ place for the day but didn’t have to worry about seats. It was surprisingly empty early — even as I rushed in, Tina greeted us and pointed to the middle section (that I was hoping to get) with the coasters set up and reserved for us. We were the only ones she had reserved tables for… but I was still surprised since I did not request any particular table.

  453. Garret September 13, 2008 8:27 pm

Sol said that their D lost their morale and their speed. Mack says that UH was tired.

“I thought we did wear down, and it was really surprising. We worked really hard to get ready for the Florida game, and we are in great condition. I have conditioned this team more than any team I have ever coached, but we played tired. In the second half we were a tired football team.

  454. Garret September 13, 2008 8:31 pm

    Pride,

I agree that the WAC title and bowl game (Mack’s other goal in addition to graduating the players) are still well within reach. The WAC title is the most important on-field goal this season and this game doesn’t change that. I just hope that the OL and DL gets healthy and that the special teams gets fixed.

  455. Garret September 13, 2008 8:38 pm

I just finished getting the qoutes from UH, the Corvallis paper, AP, and the early articles from the local papers. There will be a LOT of new quotes tomorrow, but in case anyone wants to read this I figured I should release this already.

  456. Hoohiki September 13, 2008 8:50 pm

Although the Wahine gave a tremendous effort in game 2, 29 – 27, Huskies, they’re down 2 games to none. Despite being behind, Herring is just phenomenal!!!

  457. Hoohiki September 13, 2008 8:54 pm

If the Wahine lose too, I’m calling it a day. Until the next competitions….

Jason Kaneshiro has an early flight out of Salem, which is halfway between Eugene and Portland.
“Ferd” and I depart late. But, you know, since I have to drive, I’m thinking of getting some shuteye soon. At least gas is only $3.41 here.
Let’s see, Hawai‘i doesn’t get its oil through the Gulf Coast. It has its own refinery. And yet we’re paying, what, $4.17?

You all sure were such great company before/during/after watching those five palm-sweating sets. Enjoyed the excitement of the come back unfold!

    WOWOW !!!

    Go Volleyball Wahine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  501. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 14, 2008 12:56 am

Went to the VB match tonight by myself. DrDoc was at home dealing with the beginning stages of his version of The Cold. We’re recording the match overnight so we can watch again Sunday night.

Incredible experience – barring unforseen injuries, Na Wahine will be in the NCAA regionals at a minimum.

Again, we have two tickets to next Saturday’s Boise State game – cannot go because of a must-attend event elsewhere. Let me know if you want them and we’ll leave them at the Will Call box office window on Friday night. You can probably move closer down to the floor after the first set starts if the seats are too high up.

You have to be there to feel the electricity.

Off to bed – my cold is starting to pick up steam again and next week is very, very busy so being sick is not an option.

  502. Kekoa September 14, 2008 1:13 am

UHfan808, Rob25, A-joe, A-sports, James, Ralph, Koakane. I felt like I was bailing out early after spending only 9 hours at Ige’s. I admire your staying power…and your ‘rock hard’ collective okoles.

After UFfan808 woke from her 2nd snooze session, USC was just putting the final smackdown on Ohio. She got her 2nd wind from a big bowl of noodles as she and Rob25 were in a slurpy contest to see who could inhale the most noodles in a 2 minute drill.

Curveball ~ Great meeting you! You and the wife missed all the action as Koakane was giving us a complete clinic on where the mistakes were made after the game. It was everything you and I had discussed except that he was able to put his unique and very distinct Pidgin plus into the mix.

Hope to see you 2 again at the next CC or T-gate!

    > but I do not want to criticize the coaches.

Eh? Need to respectfully disagree. What is wrong with constructive criticism? If this was just a single game let down or they had lost the games playing competitively, I can see, but right now after three games, there are ongoing problems with just the basic fundamentals like catching the ball, blocking, and tackling. This is all coaching. It therefore isn’t surprising why there has been little improvement in key areas like special teams. Like I said the other week, coaches like Urban Meyer tend to judge how well coached teams are by their special teams play. The play calling is also suspect to the point where it is a rhythm killer for the offense and I believe that it is NOT entirely Ron Lee’s fault (shall see what the coach says about why they ran 3 straight run plays). This lack of team effort which includes the coaching staff is why all the games this season has been ugly. Even fans from some WAC rivals are wondering what is going on.

One of the main reasons for hiring McMackin was for a smoother transition so that the dropoff would not be as drastic. Well obviously, that isn’t panning out very well because the results are speaking for themselves where every facet has dropped right off a cliff. I expected an offensive fall off where it would not be as efficient but not this much. The rhetoric of winning the WAC and going bowling makes for great sound bites but how about being realistic now. Heading into conference play, basic fundamentals should not be issues. If after three games, these things which are supposed to be addressed during spring, summer, and fall camps are still ongoing problems, how do you expect to fix this in two short weeks? It is like building a house, if the foundation is shakey, everything above it is going to come crashing down once the cracks occur. Having watched the games which LaTech (MSU and Kansas), Nevada (Missouri), Fresno (Rutgers and Wisconsin), and SJSU (Nebraska) have appeared in this year, Hawaii is going to have its hands full to repeat a WAC championship. They have bigger fish to fry at this point and cannot look that far ahead.

I don’t have a problem if Hawaii loses games and does not achieve the goals they set out for this year so long as they played competitively for 4 quarters in every single game. They’ve been shooting themselves in the foot though and looking really bad which vindicates those who felt UH was a flash in the pan and that its success hinged on JJ. This kind of performance is also not going to help recruiting efforts. So I’m sorry, but the coaches do need to be criticized because the lack of onfield performance, focus, and execution are NOT entirely the players fault.

  505. Ralph September 14, 2008 1:41 am

like june jones often stated, snap and clear, well I cleared my DVR-the game is history and not to be revisited by me…looking forward to San Jose and hope our defense shows up to to play smash mouth football against tomey’s charges.. I believe it will be a defensive battle with Tomey…

    RE #383 & 386

    PB-
    Oh don’t leave us!

I think we Tsaikos agree that we comment here on this blog in support of the UH Football Team and must do our best to back them up in “good” times and “bad,” whether the team wins or loses.

If we err on the side of caution and assume this is a family-rated blog — that we might perhaps have audience of young child-aged Keiki Lurkers and Lurkettes, Tsaikos and Tsaikettes — I might feel more comfortable when reading your posts.

It doesn’t mean we can’t voice our concerns or say we’re unhappy about things but perhaps the words/acronyms we choose could be less emotionally “descriptive”?

Come on, what say you simply revise the “strong” wording and rejoin us?

Sheesh, except for the *emotionally descriptive stuff* & ones like #383, I really do enjoy your posts!

    Can, eh???

  508. UHfan808 September 14, 2008 1:59 am

    Feedback or/& HonAdvOnline-
The words are kinda small today. Would you please make them just a little bit larger???

  509. x-pat September 14, 2008 3:28 am

    in support of PB:

if you can’t vent your true feelings about the team here, then why would you post here at all? it’s sort of like voting. nobody can take away your vote. and no one should be able to make you act nice if you feel mad at the team.

Good morning to Tsai-kos here and elsewhere. What an awesome finish to a somewhat disappointing day of Warrior FB. One snap and clear and off we went to the VB game. The wahine were terrific and as you probably gathered from sj’s post 493 we did not get the entire 5 sets recorded. Would greatly appreciate a copy of the match if anyone got the entire match and post game award ceremony. We ended up with a slightly abbreviated version of the epic match. Hopefully K-5 will do another replay but just in case they don’t we would like to cover all bases.
