Blaze, Rocky to miss start of season

Leftside linebacker Blaze Soares and defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea will miss the Aug. 30 season opener against Florida — and, most likely, a few more games — because of injuries.
Soares has been diagnosed with a torn gastrocnemius, a calf muscle in his left leg. The recovery period is between six and eight weeks. He is wearing a cast.
Savaiigaea has been diagnosed with a tear in his left triceps. He also is wearing a cast. His recovery period is between four and six weeks.
“It sucks,” said Savaiigaea, who will have his arm re-examined next week.
* * *

• Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea said his left triceps remains sore. He also had an MRI, and will see a specialist today.
• Greg McMackin said the competition for the quarterback’s job is so tight it will take another day to name the starter. McMackin has pushed back the decision until Thursday, at the earliest.
• Today’s practice was abbreviated by 40 minutes when Dan “The Iceman” Kelly answered McMackin’s dare, drilling a field goal from 53 yards.
* Cornerback/nickelback Ryan Mouton was limited to a few plays because of tendinitis in his right knee. But he made the most of his cameo appearance, recording two sacks off blitzes during team drills.

Even the injured players, like defensive end John Fonoti, are kept busy:

In a special ceremony yesterday afternoon, backup quarterback Steele Jantz was summoned to the sideline, where he was handed a package.
Inside was a red No. 15 practice jersey.
On the back was the name: Tebow.
“Congratulations,” quarterback coach Nick Rolovich said.
For the next two weeks, Jantz, a second-semester freshman from California, will portray Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in practice.

The receivers have been told they need to catch at least 100 passes from the JUGS machine every day. Mahalo again to bighilofan for paying for the machine’s repair.

What a display of loyalty on behalf of bighilofan for paying to fix the JUGS machine. It may sound like a small thing but it really added something important for the team. Maybe there are other small things that need to be done that some of us can step up and help. If so just post’em.

Right on Steele-bow; good luck – you going need it!
    heheheh

Wow, impressive that Eric Hannum owns a company that does MRI’s. Good ting he was able to help out this morning….Wat’s the results???

Big smile 😀 for bhf2. Way to go braddah! Dey should let you load the JUGS for the receivers as a mahalo (but only if you promise not to fuss widda dials 😉 )

    Steele-Bow
    That’s a great name.

  16. Jack Flash August 12, 2008 7:17 am

    Aloha Gang,
Does the defense still use that big bag in drills that Glanville brought over? Just curious, as I remember it being talked about alot a couple years ago. Have a good one erebody!

  17. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:18 am

I passed Midori7’s car this morning at the intersection.
She didn’t notice me. She was checking her makeup in her rear-view mirror.

  18. Maverick August 12, 2008 7:20 am

    Haha –
Steele already had a babe following apparently, now giving him a Tebow Jersey will be adding fuel to the fire.
    Lucky bugga.

Could he be one of top guys by the 2010 season?

Thanks for starting our Tuesday with good news about Blaze. Rest up Big guy, and dream of Florida.

  19. Joel August 12, 2008 7:21 am

The secret to stop Florida is to keep Tebow and the offense off the field. Steele Jantz should stand on the sidelines while the Warrior offense practice long drives and long time of possessions.

Tebow is indeed the Heisman, but it is the players around him who defenses should worry about.

Florida under Meyer has had trouble with season openers. Hawaii should focus on ball possession rather than on Tebow.

  20. bb August 12, 2008 7:22 am

    Is it just me?

I have been to a few of the practices and so far and one thing that I am seeing is that the offensive line needs work. Our defense is pretty good but they are killing the O-Line. I wouldn’t be surprised if Funaki is named the starting QB simply based on the fact that he is probably the most mobile. Now I know our defense is good but we saw what Georgia did and given Florida is probably on he same level matador protection isn’t going to get it done.

I just want to know if I am the only one seeing these things or if others share in my opinion.

  21. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:24 am

    Jack Flash:
Nope, the big bags are in storage.
Now they just hit scout players.

ST, you finally were able to upload pictures! What was the secret to doing that?

  24. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:26 am

Too bad Kiran Kepo‘o is not around.
He would be a better Tebow impersonator. Kepo‘o is big, and left-handed.

OK, OK, I confess: I’m hooked on the Lifetime channel.
And, yes, on Saturday night, we skipped watching the Olympics to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Everytime I got misty-eyed, Wena would turn and start laughing.
I was the only guy over 40 in the packed theater.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:38 am

  42. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:45 am

    Stretch does work hard.
As I understand it, for his job he drives, navigates through rough patches, and ends up with the greens.

  43. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 7:45 am

    Wena,

I was a teacher’s aide in a preschool back in the 1980s. Hard to keep order in the classroom. I lasted barely a year before switching to a legal assistant job. Much easier dealing with adults.

  44. Stretch August 12, 2008 7:46 am

  47. Maverick August 12, 2008 7:48 am

    A-joe –
Welcome back. You were back my wife’s old hood of San Mateo. I mentioned to her about your cattle call, and she was tempted to let the cousins know about the Saturday feast in Sunnyvale, but their work habits were interferring.

They will be all attending the Fresno game @ OCt. 4th all decked in green

  48. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:50 am

    Stretch is the Santa.
SJ and Myki are the ones who get to the park early to reserve spots for the latecomers.
And they’re really good about making me pretend I know things. They’ll say, it’s so nice that so-and-so is having a good practice. And then, like that, so-and-so is the subject of tomorrow’s story.

  49. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 7:52 am

Most of the starting jobs have been named. Well, sort of.
For instance, John Fonoti was deemed the starting right end. But he’s been out for about a week. Elliott Purcell has been getting a lot of work. It would difficult to bump people who have practiced hard.

  50. Stretch August 12, 2008 7:52 am

I hope I am the “Santa” because I give away stickers and NOT because I am shaped like him

I love dealing with kids. They make me laugh a lot. And I love their innocence.

  55. d1島 August 12, 2008 8:01 am

    Thanks Stephen.

Funny listening to Rob and (absent) Russ.
Kekaula calls in and talks about Mac’s reminding him the other day about his #1 rule: Don’t embarass the team.
Kekaula is befuddled ’cause he can’t recall doing anything that would warrant the rebuke until Mac reminds him that he keeps getting his 4ss kicked on the game that Kekaula plays on the radio show. 😆

  56. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 8:02 am

haha Wena. Yep, adults who are being litigated are NOT innocent like kids. They’ve been around the block too many times.

I don’t know about your preschool, but the one I worked at was so noisy. Kids love to scream and yell like it’s going outta style.

  57. chawan_cut August 12, 2008 8:05 am

    Stephen,
now that the picture uploading works again, maybe you could post that birthday picture from last week????
and good news about blaze. bobby C was just talking with kekaula on his show and blaze told robert that he really wants to play in the florida game. he’s been preparing all summer. he even has a tebow poster in his room to build up the target on his back and get him fired up every day.

  62. myki August 12, 2008 8:10 am

    Morning Wena,

I’m with you. Kids are great !! If you ever want an honest opinion just ask a kid. Most of them have not yet learned the art of deception or flattery. That’s why we have the saying painfully honest.

Hope things are going well with the school issues and that soon you’ll be home free.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid August 12, 2008 8:12 am

Does anybody else see the poignancy in Jantz being given the number “15” ? 😉

  64. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 8:12 am

Liz, isn’t 72 or 96 dpi too blurry, though?

  65. Stretch August 12, 2008 8:14 am

maybe Steele gets “15” because it’s Tebow’s jersey number?? Just a guess

Ok, Stretch doesn’t get the “15” thing… Here’s a clue: who was the last Warrior to wear that number on UH’s practice field?

Stretch if that’s to deep for you, just go back to thinkin about Tsai in his BVDs…

  71. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 8:23 am

In case you are wondering what BVD stands for, here’s what I discovered:

BVD is a brand of men’s underwear, which are commonly referred to as “BVDs.” BVD stands for Bradley, Voorhees & Day, the New York City firm that initially manufactured underwear of this name for both men and women. BVD is now only for men. It was founded in 1876 and named for its three founders.

Miano is not issuing that # on a game jersey to anyone.

  75. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 12, 2008 8:32 am

gigi- no matter how high the resolution you load, the computer screen displays at 72 or 96 – that’s why we “optimize” pix for viewing and to conserve space. They will load way faster too.

  76. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 8:36 am

Liz, so when I size my pics in Photoshop, should I make the resolution 96? Is it a bad idea to make it 300?

  77. d1島 August 12, 2008 8:40 am

    dpk,
    also re: #65

    try guugle “facetious”

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid August 12, 2008 8:43 am

I know that, D1. I just thought that it was kind of an eerie coincidence that Steele was wearing it. I was also referring to the fact that once again, the magic number “15” was on the practice field at Manoa, helping to prepare us to defeat the evil geckos, and their leader, the evil “anti-15”. Or maybe not. 😆

Ok that’s a lot to digest. I’ll stop now. 😉

Yup! We’re still up here in San Bruno. Head back tomorrow. We past San Mateo a few times on our way to and from Sunnyvale. (please tell your wife her ‘hood is still beautiful!) Got a friends’ son flying up to attend College of San Mateo this week. He’s gonna try out for their baseball team.

    Stretch-

Went to Oakland yesterday after you called. Came to a stop light behind a truck with the words blazoned, “University of Hawaii” on it’s back camper door window. We followed the truck into a gas station. I jumped out and gave the driver a UH logo sticker. She was totally surprised. She told me she hailed from Maui. Get plenny aloha roaming the bay area. =)

  106. MeiLing August 12, 2008 9:41 am

    A-Joe,

Went to Oakland yesterday after you called. Came to a stop light behind a truck with the words blazoned, “University of Hawaii” on it’s back camper door window. We followed the truck into a gas station. I jumped out and gave the driver a UH logo sticker.

I do that in Flagstaff sometimes. I used to give people my NAU card & tell them about the Hawaiian club. My co-advisor used to laugh at me for doing that, but I’ve found transplants from Hawai’i, Samoa, all ovah.

K, back to cleaning… lun cha wha ovah…

  107. Rich2176 August 12, 2008 9:49 am

    Hey Everyone –

So, I get this email written in Samoan from Barry and the only words I recognize are “Margo” and “Hawaii Kai”. Then I put 2 & 2 together and visited the blog.

I just called Margo to tell her all of the great b-day wish posts.

So, as a guy (we do everything last minute), I picked up her favorite “princess cake”, some sunflowers (she doesn’t like roses – lucky me), and we went to a really nice French Restaurant. I had beef wellington and she tried to be healthy with sand dabs. Of course, her plan all along was to have cherries jubilee for desert. It’s a desert for two, and prepared at the table. So good!

She’s doing really well. All treatments are over and just follow-ups the next few months. I’m sure the power of the Tsaiko prayers helped a lot!

I’ve been super, super busy and rarely even have the energy to read the blog. Things are starting to settle down, and with the commencement of the season, I need to get up to speed on the blog.

Thanks again to all for a wonderful time in June, and I hope to see all of you again very soon.

  108. kaimiloa August 12, 2008 9:53 am

MeiLing… Have you met the Char family in Flagstaff? I think they are still there. They had a florist shop there. They used to be our neighbor’s in Kaneohe back in small kid time. I spent an exchange year at NAU and had a blast. It was the first time I had been around so many Haoles (I’m one, too). I used to get so excited when I saw an Asian or Polynesian looking student. We didn’t have a Hawaii Club back then but all of the exchange students hung out and did trips.

When were you here? I’m actually borrowing the Char’s card tables for my garage sales. We play mah jong & have potlucks together with other people from Hawai’i. What’s your first name? I’ll let them know when I see them on Friday.

I helped start the Hawaiian club in 2003 when a haole girl who went to St. Andrews asked where the club was; the students have to want the club. As a staffer, I couldn’t start it, even though I had been looking to do that for years. Sorry we didn’t have one going when you were here.

    Hi, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Best news of the day is about Baze. I would hate to not having him on the team (sigh of relieve).

Floridas speed can only be defeated with total discipline and assignment football. If we let them into the open field, we’re in trouble. We MUST get to Tebow and manage to collapse the pocket. Georgia did that very successfully and won the game pretty handily. Our DE’s will have a huge role to play, but we do have some great ones.

Happy Birthday, Margo. It’s great to hear you are doing so well.

I’m dying to find out who they’ll name as # 1 QB this week. I still feel that it will be Alexander, but off course, I could very easily be wrong.

    Hi Wena! Happy blogging!

ST- the images are waaay too huge. 1666×2047 pixels. need to scale back to 800 pixels on the longest edge. Will do and email you back.

Looks like ST is using his new camera 😐

gigi — 72/75 dpi for web graphics display. Putting up higher resolutions pix is good for viewers to download and print–if that is your intention. Disadvantage is larger file size and more time to upload (and download) the photo–or for it to be displayed in your web browser.

This bog page photo width looks like it max’s at 500 -520 pixels wide.

  144. d1島: August 12, 2008 12:13 pm

    dpc,
The one to the OLinemen could matter ’cause they weren’t too deep during their Spring Game. Nonetheless, Meyer spins it optimistically.

“It’s frustrating when guys are hurt,” Meyer said. “Still, at our staff meeting this morning I drew up our starting offensive line and I drew up everybody when they’re healthy, and [it’s] a pretty good-looking football team.”

Talk about kicking a guy when he’s down.
Not only did Cornelius Ingram blow out his knee last week but his landlord also filed to evict him from his apartment.
Of course, if his knee rehabs well, he should be able to afford much more than $1100 per month for rent come next year.

Paradigm Properties, which owns Oxford Manor apartments, claims Ingram hasn’t paid his $1,099-a-month rent since before July 7, 2008, according to the records. Paradigm sent a notice to Ingram in July requesting a past-due amount of $1,065.

    Good Afternoon All….

I got the report from the morning practice from ST.

It looks like they are still giving all QB’s equal time and is still a tight race. I am sure everyone has their favorites and just waiting to see who is right.

To the disappointment of a few at practice, there were no “3 horns” today that signifies the Sudden Change running.

Dan the Iceman kicked a 52 yard FG to end practice. The deal made by Mack couldn’t be heard but after the kick, everyone was chearing. I guess it meant no team running although some positions did some extra work and conditioning.

  164. A-House August 12, 2008 12:59 pm

    National Media coverage:

National tv is saying that the vocie many heard singnig in the opening of the Olympics belonged to a 7 year old girl. she was replaced by the musical director because she was not “photogenic” enough. so they found a 9 year old to take her place and lip sing. to the media credit, they showed a picture of the adorable 7-year old in pigtails.

Local and national media, yesterday and this morning, are reporting that one of Hillary Clinton’s key strategist recommended, and was accepted for one speech, that she attack Obama’s “AMERCIANISM AND HIS CULTURE” based on where he was born and spent his younger years growing up – Hawaii and Indonesia.

Appears that McCain’s strategists are also asking him to start using the same issue to discredit Obama. I wonder how Gov Lingle would support this position inasmuch as she stated on tv 2 days ago that she intends to actively campaing on the mainland for McCain in the next few months.

It appears to me that you need to be 1) white, 2) born and raised in a white neighborhood in any of the contiguous 48 states to learn the correct American culture, and 3) not spend any of your “learning years” away from the USA to be a serious candidate for President.

All this time, I thought the only 2 requisites to run for President were 35 years or older and born a US citizen.

In 1967, I had to priviledge of reviewing an “after-action” report of the 100th Bn rescue of the Texas Lost Battalion. The Texas National Guard Commander rushed to Bruyerres (sp?), France to thank the soldiers of the 100th. When the 100th was formed, there were less than 55 soldiers in formation, the General got really angry because he felt no respect and demanded that his Chief of Staff find the others and have the Battalion stand formation. The Chief of Staff quietly told his General, “Sir, that’s all that came back” ( an Infantry Battalion during WWII usually consisted of 600 – 750 soldiers ). The General left the area without saying a word.

Pretty darn good for a part of the Hawaiian culture!!!

Several years back, the Republican majoirty in Congress seriously considered changing the requirement to “add” a naturalized citizen so they could push for the govenor of California as a Presidential candidate.

  166. Garret August 12, 2008 1:02 pm

I’d prefer UH schedule Pac-10 and other BCS-conference teams, but that may not be feasible to convince them to play UH now that UH can beat them. I know that many people have posted about their hopes for UH to play SMU. Looking at SMU’s schedule, they do not have an opening until 2017!

That rules out a game at SMU for 9 years. I know that SMU could play at Aloha Stadium due to the Hawaii exception, but teams will normally just schedule those games to start the season or in the final 2 weeks of the regular season. Unfortunately, they don’t have a home opener available until 2017! And since they have a conference championship game, they aren’t really available in the last 2 weeks of the regular season. So, I guess it really isn’t feasible for UH to play SMU until at least 2017.

It is good that the Pac-10, Big 10, and MWC do not have conference championship games, as that helps UH to schedule them late in the season. If every conference had a conference championship game, it would be much harder for UH to schedule games.

  178. Garret August 12, 2008 1:20 pm

    Rich,

I hope the info helped! We can do even better for Legoland or the San Diego Zoo or the Wild Animal Park.

  179. Garret August 12, 2008 1:21 pm

I hope that Mouton is okay! Tendinitis doesn’t go well with his heavy workload (all 6 defensive sets, returning kicks, offense).

  180. Kazz August 12, 2008 1:23 pm

Happy B-Day to Margo and may the blessings keep coming to your ohana!

  181. Kazz August 12, 2008 1:26 pm

    Garret,

I was also worried that they may be stretching Mouton a bit too thin in a lot of areas on the field.

The “everything” man will need to be looked out for to be truly effective for us. Especially when bumps and bruises start piling up during the season and critical players need to be healthy.

  182. Garret August 12, 2008 1:28 pm

    Kazz,

If Mouton was totally healthy, he is a weapon for UH on special teams on offense. However, he’s absolutely critical on D–he’s such an amazing playmaking CB…and that HAS to come before returning kicks of cameos on offense! There was a reason why the coaching staff had him stop returning kicks last season…he got a little dinged up. And that was without adding in a role on offense for Mouton.

  183. Garret August 12, 2008 1:29 pm

    “of cameos” = “or cameos”

  184. Kazz August 12, 2008 1:29 pm

Just a thought. I realized this ONLY this past Saturday, BUT.. why don’t they erect (STOP GIGGLING!!!.. you know who you are) a net behind the goal at the practice field?

I rarely get to see the kickers kicking in the field goal in past practices, but those footballs must take a beating after being pummled by the observation tower, the trees, and the dirt hill with rocks and roots behind the goal.

  185. Loa August 12, 2008 1:31 pm

homey – or the teacher no show up, hehe

  186. Kazz August 12, 2008 1:32 pm

    SPECIAL TEAMS

How’s Coach Malloy doing in this area? Any reports? I saw a little of it on Saturday and it looked RAW on the punt blocking side.

Man, I can’t wait till I go on “vacation” next week to really take in practice as much as possible.

    Tombo-San
Thanks for the link to Colt’s website. What a beautiful site! Perfect!

    A-house-
I couldn’t agree with you more. Not to mention the way the Republicans (most of them) from Bush on down have fought furiously against Native Hawaiian recognition. The Indians can be recognized in a similar fashion, but apparently, they think Hawaiians can’t. Ironically, Hawaii stands as the antithesis of the racism and xenopohbia characterized by some of the political shibal now being used against Obama.

IIRC (ooh, I like using that) a “sprain” means that there is torn tissue.
In this case, torn achilles tendon tissue. Can someone with medical knowledge confirm this?
In any case, it doesn’t sound good. 🙁

  216. sjmacro August 12, 2008 2:38 pm

homey; the guys loading the JUGS yesterday were #37 and #84. Both Jovonte and Dustin were catching balls at ~10 to 12 yards without miss; both players have very good hands. Seems like they’ve used the machine before. Remains to be seen how well they sync up with live balls from qbs and running routes. They don’t have their helmets yet, but were intently observing the receivers doing their reps.

  217. d1島 August 12, 2008 2:39 pm

Hope (there’s that word again, myki) that Mouton’s tendinitis isn’t a chronic thing.

  218. lab rat August 12, 2008 2:45 pm

Oh no not the achilles tendon.

  219. sjmacro August 12, 2008 2:46 pm

Also from yesterday’s PM practice: an hour was spent with the finer points of kickoff and punt coverage. Symonds can put it in the end zone; will help himself if he puts it out. That way he doesn’t have to worry about tackling in case of coverage breakdown. 😆

  220. (Jesse) James August 12, 2008 2:47 pm

D1..a strain is more of a stretching of the tendon or muscle…although small tears in the tendon or muscle can also be considered a strain…depending on how severe it is. It doesn’t sound like it is a torn achilles since they are simply calling it a strain…a torn achilles would be excruciatingly painful and I would say Blaze would be out for the season if that were the case…or at least a huge chunk of it….

In any case, a strained achilles is painful and the problem is that it needs to be rested and well healed otherwise it will be a recurring problem. However, since we use that tendon a lot (i.e. walking, this is hard to do)… Liz is right though, Blaze needs to rest it, ice it, compress it, and elevate it every chance he gets….

    Good afternoon/evening folks!

Unfortunate news about Blaze. We can use him when we go to the swamp in a couple weeks, but if no can, no can. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

  225. Rob25 August 12, 2008 2:51 pm

d1: I googled and found this

    Sprain vs. Strain

Sprains and strains are common injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Although these two words are often used interchangeably, they are different types of injuries.

    What is a sprain?
A sprain is an injury involving the stretching or tearing of a ligament (tissue that connects bone to bone) or a joint capsule, which help provide joint stability. A severely damaged ligament or joint capsule can cause instability in a joint. Symptoms may include pain, inflammation, and in some cases, the inability to move a limb (arm, leg, foot). Sprains occur when a joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, such as turning or rolling your ankle.

    What is a strain?
Strains are injuries that involve the stretching or tearing of a musculo-tendinous (muscle and tendon) structure. An acute (instant or recent) strain of the musculo-tendinous structure occurs at the junction where the muscle is becoming a tendon. These strains take place when a muscle is stretched and suddenly contracts, as with running or jumping. This type of injury is frequently seen in runners who strain their hamstrings. Many times the injury will occur suddenly while the runner is in full stride. Symptoms for an acute muscle strain may include pain, muscle spasm, loss of strength, and limited range of motion.
Chronic (long-lasting) strains are injuries that gradually build up from overuse or repetitive stress, resulting in tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon). For example, a tennis player may get tendinitis in his or her shoulder as the result of constant stress from repeated serves.

    Severity of sprains and strains
A physician categorizes sprains and strains according to severity. A Grade I (mild) sprain or strain involves some stretching or minor tearing of a ligament or muscle. A Grade II (moderate) sprain or strain is a ligament or muscle that is partially torn but still intact. A Grade III (severe) sprain or strain means that the ligament or muscle is completely torn, resulting in joint instability.

  226. d1島 August 12, 2008 2:52 pm

    (J)J,

    Thanks for the 411.
But Stephen is reporting that it is a “sprain” not a “strain” 😕

  227. Rob25 August 12, 2008 2:56 pm

From what I read it would correctly be a strain…but then again I am not a medical professional. I am always confusing the two, also.

  228. chawan_cut August 12, 2008 2:56 pm

oh oh stretch, you’re gonna get everyone interpreting your uhfan808’s “lomilomi” service. you know james and homey can’t help themselves when presented the opportunity to throw a joke in….

This is frustrating for us to see and I can’t even begin to understand what Blaze is feeling himself.

I know he’s PI**ED, I know he’s angry, BUT I BELIEVE HE WILL BE BACK AND ON THAT PLANE TO FLORIDA!!!!!

  235. (Jesse) James August 12, 2008 3:05 pm

d1…Rob is right. It technically would be called a strain since it is a tendon which connects muscles to bones…a sprain is more of a joint issue with ligaments that connect bone to bone. At least that’s what I was taught in my medical education…but, hey, that was a long time ago…MWAHAHAHAHAA

  236. (Jesse) James August 12, 2008 3:08 pm

yeah chawan…my mind is never in the gutter…I’m always clean…PLUUUUUeezzzeeee……MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  237. Maverick August 12, 2008 3:08 pm

Need to get my mind off the Blaze ordeal. Too much stress.
Just read the posted story on Hawaii Five-O coming back to series.

Who would you suggest to play the characters?

  238. Manoa August 12, 2008 3:10 pm

I am not a medical authority, but in order to coach, I have taken several courses on athletic injury and dealt with players with various injuries from sprains, to broken bones plus my own injuries which include all of those.

The doctor and the trainer will be very careful with Blaze. Unless this is a very mild sprain (consider he had to be taken off the field in a cart and could not walk off), the recommendation for an achilles sprain would be close to full healing probably 6-8 weeks at least and maybe even longer to be really safe. Achilles tendon injuries can be become chronic and are difficult to surgically repair to allow return to 100% playing condition. A torn or ruptured achilles tendon often means the end of a player’s career.

Hope this is a very mild case, but even so, from a long term perspective for Blaze, he won’t be back for Florida.

  239. Maverick August 12, 2008 3:10 pm

I wasn’t pleased with classmates asking me who Colt Brennan was in the middle of the season. *sigh*

  244. Darren August 12, 2008 3:18 pm

If it’s the tendon and/or calf muscle, then it’s a strain. If he heard a “pop”, then it’s likely a grade 2 that will probably keep him out for weeks, not days. Here’s hoping that 2.5 weeks is enough time (although unlikely). At least it’s not ruptured, cause he’d need surgery and be gone till next season.

  245. Bill August 12, 2008 3:23 pm

Hope Blaze can make without too much pain it this season after gutting out the shoulder problem last year. It’s no wonder after seeing several news clips, #53 was going balls out & always the 1st to each touch line.

Now with Mouton’s tendinitis, gotta agree that they need to tone done his reps & maybe just as a DB, forget all the return teams. Tendinitis does not get better without rest and the more you use it the worst it gets. My shoulder did not heal until I took 6 weeks & listened to my orthopedic, until then I kept playing, it was nagging & even the anti-inflamatories stopped being very effective.

The Swamp going to be dangerous enough full strength and possibly without two of the best in Blaze & Ryan the day may be a lot hotter than heck.

  247. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 12, 2008 3:30 pm

Warriors might need to huddle into “Believe” mode. Tune in to Ke Akua and become an unbroken chain of unity. Accidents happens but many time they are “attracted” by something missing or too much of something else.

    Just a thought.

  248. WarriorMojo August 12, 2008 3:30 pm

Okay, I’m not a doctor, but I can pretend to be one on the internet. I had serious concerns when ST said that Blaze needed an MRI scan. There is no need for an MRI unless you suspect ligament or tendon damage.

Bluntly, an achilles tendon injury is bad news. The achilles tendon bears the burden of connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone (calcaneus). It is difficult to play with an injury to this area because any sudden explosive movement will subject the tendon to incredible force and thus the possibility of re-injury. Also, the blood supply to the heel area is poor thus healing is slow.

I agree with Darren that it is good that the tendon is not ruptured, i.e. completely torn, because then surgery is the only remedy. The key question, though, is to what degree is it torn?

  249. homey ⓊⓈⒶ August 12, 2008 3:30 pm

That would be so good if he was my DD, but I will just stop drinking long enough in advance to get us home. It’s going to be his last opportunity to drink for about a year…or at least until he gets R and R, which would be some time in May or June next year.

Poor Koakane…isn’t the bet done by then? Better invite Koamahu or Koawahine to keep him occupied.

good afternoon tsaikos. just lurking and getting ready to try the new retaurant, Watercress, with al and duffer. don’t know what to expect and am sure chef al will have his professional critique after we eat. tonight, we never schedule a mc, cause we going there for the first time.

coach mc is really putting the gator meat in front of the players. what an incentive to cut practice time and put the pressure on the iceman. i guess making the qb decision is not as easy as it appears, but trusting the coaches is my priority. they will make a solid decision and whomever is selected, it will always be an excellent choice. like some who have observed practice, the offense is not up to speed, so this would give them more incentive to catch up with the d.

now, back to lurking and get ready to go into town to meet al and duffer.

  273. Bulla August 12, 2008 4:47 pm

    whitey,

wow, a restaurant named after me? how lucky i am. tell al order watercress soup and jump in the bowl….instand pork watercress, no can go wrong.

have a good meal, i’ll be at a meeting and then and then and then, ok sounding boring…. aloha

  274. Kazz August 12, 2008 4:50 pm

So… I’ve heard (read) that Coach Gerke really let the O-Line have it today at practice which ultimately led to the guys taking it up a notch or two.

Even Coach Smith was more animated than usual.

Coach Gerke has no time for non-sense and hopefully it will rub off on a lot more people in the days, weeks, months, and YEARS to come.

  275. Bulla August 12, 2008 4:55 pm

    ever notice Gerke’s haircut?

    nuf sed

  276. Bulla August 12, 2008 4:58 pm

Gerke is a great O line coach. Two of his former studs at his former place of employment did very well.

one was a 4th round pick by the Ravens, and the other lineman was the overall 2nd pick in the CFL. not too shabby for a hairless hippie

  277. Bulla August 12, 2008 5:00 pm

i’ll let homey sample one, for his expert review of course….haha

  278. Kazz August 12, 2008 5:03 pm

    Bulla,

Coach Gerke just seems like a GREAT and intense motivator (i.e. listen to me or I’ll kick your teeth in).

Recalling my memory from spring practices and the last practice I saw in person, it seems like Smith is doing his thing and then Gerke steps in later and takes over, but in a good way.

Again, I do not know Brian Smith’s style of coaching but he seems a bit too timid a lot of the time (same with Rolo).

I like my coaches to be vocal, loud, demanding, and understanding.

  292. whitey August 12, 2008 5:37 pm

wow, that is not very good news about Blaze. almost half the season will be over before he can play and the coaches will have to make a major decision of whether to play him or not. somewhere on Oahu, there must be a good healer who can help UH with their injured players. i have a freind here who is a bonsan/masseur and he is very good. had tennis elbow and in less than a minute, he cured it. amazing!! regular doctors will tell you to rest it for at least 2 weeks and give you some prescription. didn’t need any rest or prescription. wonder if something like this would help our players.

  293. Kazz August 12, 2008 5:38 pm

    Chawan,

I’m now concerned about the physical well-being of the individual who had to tell Blaze he can’t play for a while.

  303. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 5:47 pm

Blaze should sit out and get the medical hardship, fully heal his body into top shape and then come back and dominate. His loss sucks arse but I think Brashton, R.J., and the rest of the boys is just as good and can pound just as hard! Dayumit, I really was looking forward to Rocky knockin heads in the Swamp.

Ryan Mouton – Need to take it easeh bruddah. I know Ryan is a big playmaker but we need him on “D”. Should let Mike Washington or one of the new JC guys, Jovonte or Dustin return kicks.

  304. sjmacro August 12, 2008 5:57 pm

Kazz & Bulla thanks for the reminder, Coach Gerke gives us a daily sound “bite” from 60 yds away. E.g. today: “I didn’t give you a reason to walk.”
From the last few days: “Your job is to hustle.”; “Don’t waste your reps.” “Don’t let me repeat myself.”
All that is good since he is impressing, as is all the coaches, that the pace has gotta pick up, time is of the essence, they’ll be in the swamp before they know it.
BTW Coach Miano warned dbs on the side line he would be owed 20 pushups at a time if they couldn’t repeat the coverage signal call during 11 on 11. Focus, focus since you never know how quickly you are going to be called on to perform.

  305. Shannon August 12, 2008 5:57 pm

Auwe!!! …too bad for Blaze & Rocky… I was really looking forward to them against Florida & Oregon State… Hopefully our depth will prove true and hold up against the competition while they’re out…

About the Medical hardship for Blaze…that MIGHT be an option…

  306. kama krab August 12, 2008 5:58 pm

    NOOO this can’t be true.

Blaze has been doing so well with his injury problems.

I hope that we can come back from this major injury to our linebacker core.

  307. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 5:59 pm

    Ope Howzit Hawaiianbod…

Well found out I have a severe lower back strain and something is slightly out of place which the chiro torqued my back to straighten the area up a bit. Kind of scray though as I didn’t know my back could make like the cereal and Snap, Crackle, Pop. The injury is not that bad but I have to go to physical therapy and rehab for the next 3 weeks or so depending if the pain lessens or not. I get that retarded electric stimulation done too which I feel doesn’t do nothing except buzz the crap out of my back and makes it feel tighter. Plus they gave me more Vicodin and the wonderous military cure all pill, Motrin… Anyway, the doc says I should be back to normal in about a month or so with rehab. I went today and the excercises sucked arse but the chicks who were helping me out helped ease the pain 🙂

  308. djmitcho August 12, 2008 6:02 pm

    Pauoa Boy,
I agree with you on the CB5 logo. I wrote an email to CB on his website suggesting that he put it on a shirt and sell da buggas

  309. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 6:04 pm

Coach Gerke is my kind of coach…straight speed and intensity, no slacking allowed, all business and nothing personal. I hope the boys realize that they need to constantly push themselves beyond what they think they are capable of doing. The harder they work, the easier the game will be…

  310. djmitcho August 12, 2008 6:05 pm

Blaze and Rocky out is not good news. I’m glad the D is deep this year. I know da odda guys can step up and do da job.

  311. Stephen Tsai August 12, 2008 6:06 pm

blaze’s situation is complicated. he entered as a partial qualifier out of high school.

  312. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 6:09 pm

djmitcho, howzit ha-y-n…yeah that logo is mean, wonder if he thought of that himself or had somebody hook em up? I went write him too and told him I love him, but not in the homey-ish kind of way 🙂 Anyway, if you guys dunno we get the Fantasy Football League starting and need a few more players. It is free and fun and can maybe have one prize for the winner of the league…TBD. But just email djmitcho for info, draft is in a few weeks so hurry up and join up!

  313. kama krab August 12, 2008 6:14 pm

    ST

So does that mean he can not take a medical redshirt year?

  314. Committed Road Warrior (formerly Lurker) August 12, 2008 6:20 pm

    Unfortunate for Blaze.

    Apologies for thinking out loud:

So what’s his situation with regards to playing time? Didn’t he use up a year of eligibility at HPU, so when he entered UH he had 4 years to play 4? Could this be one of those situations where he can get that year back if he makes enough progress towards his undergraduate degree by some arbitrary deadline?

If the above isn’t the case, this may be of those situations where you might want to consider applying for a medical redshirt, especially if it appears he won’t be back until the second half of the season at the earliest.

    Don’t know for sure.
    Just tinking out loud. 🙂

  315. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 6:37 pm

With all the injuries to our LB’s, Blaze and Adam…

How is my boy Paipai Falemalu coming along? Somebody mentioned him getting reps with the second team D??? Sounds good to me, I think he’s going to be frikkin awesomest for our Warrior D! That would be a nice big LB core in the future… Paipai Falemalu, T.J. Alofipo, Alema Tachibana, Art Laurel, wonder if soon I can add Manti Te’o to the list…*crossing fingahs*

  316. FloridaTed August 12, 2008 6:38 pm

Man, I’m heart sick for Blaze. He worked so hard and after last year, now this. Rocky’s injury sucks too. How long is he out?

The team will be o.k., but I feel lousy for all these guys. What a tough sport.

  317. Pauoa Boy August 12, 2008 6:40 pm

FloridaTed – Rocky 4-6 weeks per ST

  318. Kazz August 12, 2008 6:40 pm

    Committed Road Warrior,

Interesting info there. I guess this is where the fine print in the NCAA rule book needs to be examined.

I hope Blaze will think about seeking medical hardship as it seems the second he is ready to go, something else happens.

Maybe a season off will do the trick?

  319. jm2375 August 12, 2008 6:59 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos!

Man, I was looking forward to seeing Blaze kick some Tebow and Gator arse. To all the gimpy Warriors, listen to da docs and trainers, don’t be too impatient.

BTW – US vs Australia (former Wahines on team IIRC) on CNBC.

Anyone go on the tour of the new dorms today?

Waaaaay off topic – CVS bought Longs Drugs. Maybe now they’ll make changes in the workflow and it won’t take 2 hours for them to fill a prescription. 😡 I stopped getting my drugs at Longs after that. Sam’s and Walgreens and in a pinch, Safeway.

  320. Garret August 12, 2008 6:59 pm

Horrible news about Blaze and Rocky! They have worked so hard and have been looking forward to the Florida game all offseason…I can’t imagine how they feel right now. Such a shame…but we know that they will work hard to get back into playing form as soon as possible. At some point the redshirt option needs to be explored if necessary, but at this point in time I’m sure that they are focused on getting back earlier than what the estimates say and playing this season.

It is a good thing that the Warriors have depth on D. The bad thing is that they were planning to rotate a lot of players due to the heat and humidity in Florida and now the depth (especially for players with experience) is reduced.

  321. Garret August 12, 2008 7:02 pm

Article about UH’s increased travel costs.

Clapp said Hawaii’s athletic travel budget, at $2.75 million last year, is expected to increase to $3.2 million this year. That accounts for 10.75 percent of Hawaii’s athletic budget.

“Like anything else, it’s a challenge,” Clapp said. “We’ve always been aware with the cost of travel. Right now, there’s a heightened awareness. Our coaches and administrators are trying to be creative.”

Clapp said the school is trying to offset some of the costs with increased ticket sales and increases in the value of radio and television rights. Hawaii also faces substantial travel costs in recruiting, because many of its athletes come on visits from the mainland.

  322. Garret August 12, 2008 7:05 pm

Now for some good news. Note from Miami’s practice today.

Davone Bess made a couple of nice catches during the afternoon practice. After one along the sideline Bill Parcells stopped him and showed the proper way to give a cornerback a stiff arm after the catch.

The coaches are clearly investing in Bess, who I think is a safe bet to make the 53-man roster unless some receiver that’s really talented hits the waiver wire. But I think Bess is really talented too. One one play during the two-minute drill he caught a pass in-between Nathan Jones and Chris Crocker that got them called to the teachers desk, as Todd Bowles was instructing them how to play the shifty receiver who is effective at finding open zones.

  323. Garret August 12, 2008 7:07 pm

Miami had their 1-on-1 DL/OL drill today. Looks like Samson went 2-for-2 today!

Samson Satele stands up (completely stops) Paul Soliai

Satele stands up Toribio with little difficulty.

  324. Garret August 12, 2008 7:11 pm

WR Ernest Wilford, who was initially signed this offseason to be a starter, keeps falling down the depth chart. Last week Derek Hagan unseated him for a starting spot. This week it appears undrafted rookie receiver Davone Bess wrestled away the slot receiver role.

  325. Pomai August 12, 2008 7:19 pm

Tsaikos – I have just been in contact with rainbowcliff, someone hacked his hotmail account and has been sending out a scam email to all in his address book, he is very embarrassed about it, but I told him not to be that we all know him better than that.

Also more important is that his son is very sick and this has taken a toll on him, I would like to ask everyone to keep Cliff and his family in your prayers. Between his son, work and now the email thing he is feeling really down at the momment, so just lift him up, one of ours needs our support.

  326. Garret August 12, 2008 7:25 pm

Davone Bess went undrafted in April after leaving Hawaii a year early, and he is listed sixth on the Dolphins’ receiver depth chart. But Bess has been catching passes all over the place the past two days and seems to be developing a nice rapport with new quarterback Chad Pennington. Quick slants, deep outs, bombs over the middle – Bess is catching them all. He set school and WAC records with 293 career receptions in just three years at Hawaii and is making a case to earn one of the final receiver spots over David Kircus and Jayson Foster.

  327. Garret August 12, 2008 7:28 pm

    More notes from Miami’s practice.

Pennington hits Davone Bess on an out pattern. Nice catch by Bess on a low throw.

Pennington is good, not great, in this drill. He hits Wilford on a slant, Bess on an out pattern, throws out of the end zone to Camarillo, hits David Martin on a drag and throws too far to Ricky on a wheel route.

  328. FloridaTed August 12, 2008 7:31 pm

    Pomai,

I’m sad to hear that Cliff’s son hasn’t gotten better. I left a voicemail for him yesterday about how his e-mail account was hacked and I’m glad that you reached him so that he for sure knows now. I posted on the blog last night about how the e-mails were faked, but it is good you posted that also today since lots of people could have missed that note.

Maybe San Jose St., Idaho and NaMaSu officials can solve their attendance problems the way the Chinese have at the Olympics.
After reporting sell-outs at every event two weeks ago, Chinese officials had to react to the concerns of Olympics officials that many events were being telecast with empty seats.

To remedy the problem, officials are calling on teams of state-trained “cheer squads” identifiable by their bright yellow T-shirts to help fill the empty seats and improve the atmosphere.

He had to turn down his invitation to the UH Letter Winners Banquet and Fundraiser scheduled for the 30th of this month because of the unfortunate turn of events in his son’s on going medical problem.

Please remember that this is the man who has represented the UH Warrior Spirit for well over 20 years. Looking at all that he has achieved and established for the youth of the toughest neighborhood in Los Angles is a true testimonial to his drive for excellence. His compassion for his fellow Tsai-ko’s is what makes me proud to call him my friend. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

    Malama Pono,
    Kekoa

Same arrangement as last April 19’s Krazy Karaoke Call

    • bring snacks and pupu’s (optional)
    • $15 per person to cover room rental/karaoke

    Current RSVP Count = 48

I will be listing the meal/pupu/goody potluck items that attendees might voluntarily bring to the Karaoke Call so everyone can see the overall “menu”. Not everyone should bring food, otherwise we will have too much–so don’t feel you must bring something.

Please email me with your tentative food item or speciality dish (hint, hint). I will list it in the Events calendar section above.

Tsai-ko Notes for Saturday Karaoke Call
Parking should not be a problem with the large parking lots.
The large (green) room has a lot of space but ice chest “pooling” recommended.
We may enter the room at around 7:45 PM
Mrs. Bulla and d1shima will be entering songs into the system per my request. We will have colored paper slips for writing song requests. Turn in song requests to Mrs. Bulla or d1shima
Mrs. Bulla and the Jager Bombers will set in the front half of room for song input –also the Bomber table. All Tsai-kettes invited to stop by 🙂
Bulla is setting up and tending a speciality drinks bar with assistance from Rob25 and homey and has requested a back corner.
WreckinEyez is rumored to have something interesting to set up in the other back corner…
Attempts to gather a food list has largely failed so far, but only 1 bunch of watercress allowed! Go ahead and bring your food/pupus..we’ll probably go to 1:00 AM and need the midnight fuud.
Standby for a possible semi-organized singing program at around 10:30 PM. Maybe. Solos, duets, small group, etc. — maybe. Did I say “maybe”? Maybe Koakane co-hosts?

  360. Jason August 12, 2008 10:34 pm

Wow, that really sucks about Blaze and Rocky. Awkward, how the first hundred-or-so posts are, “Hey, good thing Blaze’s injury isn’t that bad.” But once the final diagnosis hit …

But of course, all of this pales in comparison to the concerns we all share for Cliff and his family. You have my prayers as well, my friend.

    * * *

In other news, were there any Tsaikos at Hawaiian Brian’s tonight? I was there with friends, and when we were leaving, I saw a truck with both Tsaiko and upside-down UA stickers. I’m terrible at recognizing peoples’ vehicles, so I don’t know who it was. Whomever it was that was there, I wish I knew earlier, I would have said Hi.

Interesting what Heather McMackin had to say yesterday on Esme’s blog about Game Day in her household. She does not cook all day. And she finds it stressful even though it should affect only her husband, since he is the coach. Everything is geared around Game Day.

  364. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 10:51 pm

But I sort of know what she means. When hubby was going thru negotiations about a big pay cut 7-8 years ago, we both suffered. It was awful watching him being stressed out during a process that lasted a week. Hope we never go thru that again.

Ex-UH athletic director Frazier hired at Temple

    Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier, who was fired by the school in January, has been named the associate athletic director for sports administration at Temple University, the Philadelphia Daily News reported on the Web last night.

Frazier was fired a day after football coach June Jones left UH to accept the head coaching job at Southern Methodist. A 1972 graduate of Germantown High School in Philadelphia, Frazier succeeds Joe Giunta, who left to become director of athletics at Cabrini College.

  368. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 11:14 pm

hmmm I thought ST said that HF had bought a house in Arizona. Strange that he’d find a job in Philly. Oh well, best of luck to him.

  369. Koauka August 12, 2008 11:41 pm

This is too funny. I’m glad the former University of Hawaii Athletic Director has a “friend” in need.

Should we start a e-mail campaign to the Temple Athletic Department?

Still it bothers me, the former AD still passes his persona as a administrator?

But, like they say, “its not what you know, its WHO you know!”

gotta work gotta work. hydrate hydrate

really good reading Ferd’s article on Alexander this morning. Da young man is super intense, could see that in his eyes week before last… no foolin around.

so if he beats out Funaki, it’ll have to be on accuracy because the word is Inoke has been the absolute stud in the gassers….

but accuracy and all dat don’t mean squat if da oline cannot hold long enuff fo King Alexander an da receivers don’t have time to develop da routes….

das why i’m tinkin dis waiting an extra day is a bunch a hooey.. coach no like signal Fla wat he get up his sleeve, I thinkin ball control, sometimes, I thinkin passin sometimes, I thinkin 2 QBs for Fla…. i no kea wat he said b4, Coach Mack get da shifty eyez. 😀

boy, all dis JV coachin is goin to my head…. 😀 😆

ok, who like bet? double down…. Inoke and Alexander both play at Florida, Inoke starts…

    😀 😎

    bighilofan2,

    Nice to meet you.

All the breakfast places in Gainesville will be packed Saturday morning, there will be one hundred thousand people in town for the game. If you do decide to get breakfast at 9:30am, then visit Pita Pit across the street from the stadium for a breakfast pita. It’s a national franchise but the Florida college kids love it. It’s fast, good, and reasonably priced. If you can wait till about 10:30am, then visit the Copper Monkey located upstairs from the Pita Pit. The Copper Monkey is the place to go before, during, and after the game. The Copper Monkey has the best burgers and drinks in town. The place will be packed so get there early and relax before the game. Tell management Joel sent you.

    Greetings LizKauai,

The stadium sells hot dogs, pizza, bbq sandwiches, and the like. The real issue is the cost, they sell at or above five dollars each. I am sure it is the same at the Aloha Stadium. So if you don’t mind the prices and long lines, the Swamp has much to offer.

You mention there are other Gainesville residents from Hawaii? I have live here for awhile and have not met anyone. It would be great to meet them.

  397. Kekoa August 13, 2008 6:51 am

Good Morning Tsaiko Ohana ~ I was sleeping so soundly until I heard all dis noise coming in from da big isle. All da BANGING & CLANGING was so typical of just one trouble maykah Hawaiian from Hilo.

Only way to shut bhf2 down is to drown da gay-tors in da Swamp! Den he goin’ be happy. He like da Warriors choose up sides today, figga out who goin’ be QB, who goin’ be Oline and proteck his QB. Wit Blaze & Rocky out, mebbe da injury bug can be exterminated by staying in top condition and mo focused on da task at hand.

Dey goin be in full armament too, so dat going add more fuel to da fire. Cannot play wit reckless abandon, gotta play smaht! Crisp blockin’ and clean text book tackles. No make Portagee Supahman! FOCUS! CONCENTRATE! KEEP HEAD ON SWIVEL! and HYDRATE!
(not you Koakane, you stay on da wagon braddah, you doin’ good!)

    http://theredskinsblog.com/2008/08/13/on-the-field-for-morning-practice-813/#more-779

“# Colt Brennan may have driven the offense to a touchdown in a two-minute drill, threading a pass to James Thrash in the back of the endzone as time ran out, but the defensive players argued that rookie Rob Jackson would’ve had Brennan sacked if he had been allowed to touch the QB. For what it’s worth, I tend to agree with the defense on this one. Still a nice throw and catch by Brennan and Thrash, though.
    # And, much to my joy, we saw the return of “people throwing things at the quarterbacks” — in this case, the drill designed to teach the QBs how to get hit. “When you know you’re going to get hit,” Coach Zorn explained on the field, “you lose concentration, and you start going back tentatively.” Then they all threw pads at each other. “

The Geckos had a scrimmage today.
Closed practice means no direct reporting; just notes from the press conference after.
Some roster shifting to fill in the DB’s

Redshirt freshman Justin Williams’s two interceptions during the scrimmage couldn’t have been more timely. The guy just switched from wide receiver days ago and makes two huge plays. Looks like he could be in the mix with Will Hill and Ahmad Black at SS. “Good things happen to good people,” Meyer said about Williams

It doesn’t sound like those pics were off Tebow as they continue to figure out who will be the #2 QB

Tim Tebow only handled the two-minute drill while Cam Newton and John Brantley took most of the QB snaps. The battle for No. 2 continues. The two will break up into scout teams in the afternoon. They were “sporatic, but very good players” during the scrimmage, said Meyer, who hinted that he wants to play Newton in running situations regardless. As long as Newton can be confident when he enters the game, don’t be surprised to see a lot of the Tebow-Newton combination a la Leak-Tebow in 2006, only UF will have two effective QB runners instead of one. Brantley was startled early but was “real good…once you shake the cobwebs out.” Don’t expect an official No. 2 until they jog out of the Swamp tunnel on Aug. 30.

Chris Rainey is back after a minor (if there is such a thing) groin injury.
    Emmanuel Moody is dinged up.

Brandon James was all over the field, apparently. He won the two-minute drill at receiver, Meyer said. In other hybrid-and-ridiculously-fast-player news, RB Chris Rainey is now full speed after that groin injury and RB Emmanuel Moody went light on Tuesday with a thigh contusion.

And the other #8 seems to be making good progress. Hope the Warriors are able to contain both of them on Aug. 30.

Patchan and Hunter are “getting close” to full speed, Meyer said. There’s no way Hunter doesn’t play significant snaps this year. In other D-Line news, Strong said Carlos Dunlap is the starter right now in front of Justin Trattou.

The OC is earning his keep with all the injuries that have him shuffling things around. They seem to still be hanging on Percy Harvin making a comeback by game time.

And now a quote from Offensive Coordinator Dan Mullen about the progression of his offense without Percy Harvin (heel), Cornelius Ingram (torn ACL) and Louis Murphy (ankle). He’s got a tough job right now: “We better get there. There’s a commitment, there’s a focus…”(Percy’s) walking through things. When he’s healthy, he’ll be going. I know he runs fast. I don’t need to see him do that…If he doesn’t feel right, there’s no need for him to push it because we know what he can do.”

    Morning gang-

I think I know that horse DPK, as my drive into Hilo always routes through Panaewa. Kahoaopea St. I believe. That’s your sis?

Keeping your Comanche corralled could be hazardous to your health ( and his) :>
