Mianos welcome a baby girl

Rich and Lori Miano are proud parents of a baby girl. Siena Leolani Miano was born yesterday morning. She’s 20 inches and weighs 7 pounds, 9 ounces. No report yet on her 40 time. Congrats to the Mianos.

There are many keys to Boise State’s success.
Talented players. Innovative schemes. A blue home jersey that is a 5-point match to the Bronco Stadium blue turf.
But the Broncos’ unified response is their 100-percent attendance during unsupervised workouts.
It is a number that often is a technicality, like the New York Knicks’ home “sellouts,” and it also is a comparison, when held up to UH’s participation, that is like apples and mangos.
The purpose of the offseason is to get into — and then stay in — shape. For UH, the fitness program is covered in a day-by-day schedule each player receives in May. While 7-on-7 drills are fine, running routes in tank tops and basketball shorts do not simulate game conditions.
It also should be reminded that Hawai‘i is not Boise. Just look at the apartment rental ads in the Idaho Statesman newspaper.
UH players receive enough money for summer school, but not much else. Even star players, like Seattle-raised linebacker Adam Leonard, need to find ways to pay the rent.
That is why those who can’t make all of the unsupervised workouts should not be judged too harshly, and those who can should be praised.
And there also should be some empathy for some Mainland players who choose to go home for a few weeks. Some haven’t been home in 11 months.
The best news, for UH fans, is the players’ commitment to learning the plays. Wideout Royce Pollard, who is not on scholarship, checks out football videos every day. The video system files plays by category. Pollard will check out videos of all of the slant routes, for instance, study them, then work on those routes during the 7-on-7 drills.
Pollard isn’t alone. Even the veterans, such as Malcolm Lane, Aaron Bain, Dylan Linkner and Leon Wright-Jackson, to name a few, are always studying videos.
That, more than anything else, will help the Warriors entering training camp.

Here’s Pollard:

The best battle is at left tackle, where Aaron Kia, Ray Hisatake and Laupepa Letuli are competing for the starting job. Kia exited spring training slightly ahead. Kia now weighs 290, and he hopes to gain another 10 points before the start of training camp. Kia has been working out at Fudge’s Gym in Mililani (along with long-snapper Jake Ingram and linebacker Josh Andrews). One of his workouts includes escalating weight-lifting. The workout ends with Kia doing three sets (10 bench presses each) of 315 pounds. Here’s Kia:

3-kia.JPG

But don’t overlook Hisatake and Letuli, who is finally injury free. Letuli missed all of spring training because of a hamstring injury. Hisatake has become one of the leaders in agility drills in Klum Gym. Here’s Hisatake:

David Veikune and John Fonoti will be the No. 1 defensive ends entering training camp. Elliott Purcell is poised to become an excellent pass rusher. Don’t forget C.J. Allen-Jones, who is making the move from strongside linebacker. Here’s C.J.:

And here’s C.J.’s ride:

    ST: O-line musings.

    If I had my druthers, I’d move Steinhoff to RG.

    We would then be experienced up the middle – open up the middle for the running game..

    LG Keith Ahsoon, C Estes, RG Steinhoff. Lafu can fill in at G & C.

    The 2 tackle spots can be filled from the bumbuchas who have been in the program for 2 – 3 years – they should be able to capably contribute.

    Use the first three games to find the starters at tackle.

    I’m O.K. with being 1-2, at worst, then start conference play with the tackle positions solidified.

    ST: during spring practice, did they move Steinoff back to RG, while they were “mixing & matching” ?

    “Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is a big reason why Florida is on top of the DDS rankings. Ladies and gentlemen, start your search engines.
    You know you’ve been waiting for it because you can tell when it’s coming. You sweat indoors and turn a different color outdoors. You stand over a grill and wonder if it’s hotter in the coals or in your clothes. Yep, it’s summer and that means the return of the DDS.

    You’ve been waiting for it.
    It’s back.

    The DDS is my summer rankings of the SEC’s 12 football programs and — for those of you new to this — the DDS is the Dooley Decimal System. The problem with that clever name is that someone last year wanted to see my spreadsheet to understand how I could rank South Carolina ahead of Arkansas and, of course, there is no spreadsheet and there is no real DDS. It’s just a funny name for my rankings. Get over it. This is just my opinion and opinions are like passwords. Everybody has one.

    And for the last time the DDS is not an opinion of which teams will be the best next season. It is a ranking based on the overall strengths of the football programs based on recruiting, coaching stability, facilities, talent level, assistant coaches, fan base, financial stability and national perception.

    It’s never been more difficult to rank all 12 because this is easily the best football conference in America. How many times have you heard the mantra — the best players, the best coaches, the best fans? It’s not bragging. It’s a fact.

    So the eighth or ninth best program should not feel insulted. It would probably be third in the ACC or Big 10.

    Here we go:

    1. Florida

    Nice homer pick, Dools. Sorry, but the Gator program is the best going right now. Florida has stability at head coach, great fans, tons of money and three straight top three recruiting classes. But what puts UF over the top is the addition of the new coaches offices and Gateway of Champions. It’s going to make a great stadium the best in the country. I know, those of you reading in Tuscaloosa, Athens or Baton Rouge will question my credibility, but I ask you these three questions.

    Who is the face of college football right now?

    What is the best known stadium in America?

    Who is the hottest coach in America right now?

    You may not answer Tim Tebow, The Swamp and Urban Meyer to all three, but you could.”

    There. Is that enuf gasoline for the barbee?

    Morning, night owls, morning, Tsai-Meister.

    Long day today, thought I peek in here before I go out.

    Man, I can’t wait for fall camp. The suspense is killing me. I want to know how the team shapes up really bad, so I can start drooling.

    Thanks for the post, Tsai-Meister, we often forget, in all our excitement, how tough it is to be a top notch student-athlete. One can only admire these young men, who give us so much fun.

    bhf2, LizK,

    how are you? Could you or LizK send me an e-mail, once the plans for Florida are set? Ticket, meeting, etc. If I had parking I would drive straight from Tampa, otherwise I could drive to Orlando and take the bus to Gainesville from there. The A-Houses kindly invited me to go on the tour bus with them. So I need to plan, especially since there is a CC in Orlando planned, as far as I know.

    Have a great day everybody.

    Gotta run now, laterz.

    Top 20!!! Whoo-hoo!!!

    Great photos and videos LizK — thanks much for posting them.

    Mr. Tsai . . .

    Photos are getting better! Yeah!!! It does make sense why all of the players are not out on the field every day. Is there something that can be done to help alleviate some of the financial concerns? Or is this another one of those compliance issues? Sorry bhf2.

  19. wafan July 7, 2008 5:24 am

    F-Ted . . .

    That is so cool you get to watch the Warriors do some ‘gator wrestling. I cannot wait until the OSU game when we take on the dangerous Beavers.

    Okay. I know. Oooooo, a cute beaver as opposed to a carnivorous alligator. Hmmmm. Still, a beaver can change the landscape with its dams.

    Now this is pathetic. Trying to justify the ferocity of the beaver. HA!

    About the SAT conversation yesterday. The test has never proven post-secondary success. I believe that it still does not.

    It does, however, manage to point out and keep out kids who simply do not do well on paper/pencil tests. It is a snap-shot of a short period of time on one day out of a persons life. How can knowledge be objectively validated in that time? I believe it is much more important to “test” and validate critical thinking skills. The practical application of knowledge is much more important than simply knowing the information.

    Can you imagine Einstein having to take the SAT before entering college?

  28. Garret July 7, 2008 6:33 am

    It is great that the Warriors are studying video to help them prepare for their workouts this summer! That extra study will make sure that nothing gets overlooked and provide direction for their unsupervised workouts.

  29. Garret July 7, 2008 6:40 am

    With Navy and Army filling up their schedules for the next 5-10 years now (see the links from the past 2 weeks), it is interesting to see the direction that Air Force is taking. I’m really hoping that UH plays more academy teams soon, but with HF not scheduling them years ago it looks like there won’t be many openings (aside from the already scheduled Navy games) in the near future.

    It looks like Air Force wants to have 2 open dates in their schedule, which means that the extra game that UH can offer them is not a plus. Air Force plays 2 nonconference games each year (plus their MWC schedule and Army/Navy), with their head coach wanting a lower-level team to open the season with and then a game that is usually against a BCS-conference team. Looks like there is no opening for UH until at least 2015…since UH didn’t schedule Air Force years ago under HF.

    Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh and football coach Troy Calhoun have come to a meeting of the minds for scheduling the two open dates annually on the academy’s football schedule.

    The Falcons play a 12-game schedule that includes eight games against Mountain West Conference opponents and service academy bouts with Army and Navy.

    The sticky point in the plan is Calhoun’s desire to schedule a lower-level Bowl Sub-division (formerly Division I-A) opponent or a Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) opponent.

    “There’s a science to this that will allow us to get everything we want in a schedule,” Calhoun said. “We want to play a home game on parents weekend and then play a major opponent on the road where we can access some of our graduates.”

    To set up the desired schedule, Mueh faces the task of changing the Falcons’ home openers in 2010 against Houston, 2011 against Florida State, 2012 against Minnesota and possibly 2015 against Oklahoma State.

    “Troy does not object to playing those teams, but not in the first game of the season,” Mueh said. “We are playing at Minnesota in 2009 and at Florida State in 2012.”

    Air Force’s schedule this year is in line with the agreement. The Falcons open the season Aug. 30 at home against Southern Utah and play Sept. 13 at Houston.

    Article from a Utah paper about how the Pac-10 won’t want BYU and Utah.

    I’ve had several people ship me a well-researched speculative piece on Foxsports.com by Greg Welch, making a case that BYU and Utah present excellent candidacies for membership in the Pac-10. The story chronicles and compares Pac-10, BCS and non-BCS football and basketball attendance, athletic budgets, market rankings and rivalries. It spells it out pretty well.

    Yes, BYU and Utah would make great members of the Pac-10. In fact, I’d bet my most prized material possession, my golf clubs, that Utah and BYU would be better Pac-10 programs than Washington State and Oregon State.

    But if it happens, it won’t be any time soon. Changing commissioners won’t change a general philosophy in the Pac-10 that they’ve got the money and the TV exposure, a gob of money and others do not. And they’re not sharing.

    University presidents in the Pac-10 have no desire to expand. Their conference deploys a system where every team plays one another and a true champion is crowned. It has a train-load of money from an ABC-TV contract shared with the Big Ten until 2014.

    The Pac-10 has the Rose Bowl, which is exempt from the $6 million fee other BCS bowls must pay to have the BCS label by its name. It keeps Rose Bowl money and BCS coin, and it’s a league that isn’t going to divide it with new kids on the block.

    Greg Hansen explained the Pac-10’s four-part, no-expansion platform as follows: 1. We don’t want to share our TV money. 2. We don’t want to split up our bowl-game money. 3. We don’t want to compromise our academic standards. 4. We can’t realign into divisions because no one is willing to be placed in a group that doesn’t include USC and UCLA.

    “The academic leaders at USC, Stanford, Cal and UCLA see themselves as a coterie of Ivy League schools, West Coast division, and as long as they live, the Pac-10 will not be taking on lowbrow academic entities, not San Diego State and especially not Fresno State or UNLV,” wrote Greg Hansen.

    Book from a former Nebraska player details his recruiting visit:

    The coaches took us to the best restaurants in town, and later the player escorts would get us into the wildest college parties. And the girls! Oh Christ, they were like something from some cheerleader sex fantasy. Agape I watched them with their blond hair tied back, their impossibly long legs, their ice-blue and emerald-green eyes, and their dazzling, perfect teeth, I noted the way that they fell over themselves to get close to the football guys who treated them with calculated indifference, and I realized that to get onto the team at Nebraska was to get all-areas access to the best parties, the best girls, the American f—— dream. As the season was already over I didn’t get the chance to see the Cornhuskers play, but I had memorized Christian’s accounts of Memorial Stadium: the roar of the crowd, 78,000 voices hoarse and steadfast, cheering on this team that was worshipped like young gods in the state of Nebraska. The thought of this sound sent shivers up my spine. It seemed to provoke something in me, and I felt a druglike rush flooding my brain. I imagined myself stepping out onto the field, and that roar, that deafening, dizzying, 78,000-voices-strong scream being directed toward me.

  34. Garret July 7, 2008 6:54 am

    It is sad that Shawn Withy-Allen had to miss his team’s last regular season game.

    The Fayetteville Guard will play its most pivotal game of the season today without starting quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen.

    Withy-Allen, who has thrown for 15 touchdowns in the past three games, is out of the country and won’t be in uniform when the Guard (5-8) plays Mississippi (12-1) with an American Indoor Football Association playoff berth on the line.

    “He wanted to be here, but this is something he’d already obligated himself to do,’’ Guard head coach Charles Gunnings said. “So as a man, he had to go ahead and take care of that.’’

  35. Garret July 7, 2008 6:56 am

    Shawn’s team lost the game and did not make the playoffs.

    After Fayetteville seized a 41-29 lead late in the third quarter, the Mudcats countered with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to eliminate the Guard from playoff contention with a 43-41 victory.

    Playing without starting quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen and facing a defense that yielded just 34 points in the teams’ first meeting, Fayetteville’s offense fell stagnant in the final quarter, mustering a total of 21 yards and two first downs.

    Great Morning All.

    Hope everyone’s weekend went well.

    Kudos to those Warriors who are able to work things out to attens UW’s here. And good thoughts for those who are handling their team commitments elsewhere. It all comes together early next month; can hardly wait for that to start.

    Secrets of a Warrior
    by Kevin Jakahi
    Tribune-Herald Sports Writer
    Published: Friday, July 4, 2008 8:24 AM HST
    Lee looking to teach, searching for talent at UH football clinic
    Want to learn how to sack the quarterback? Or impress coaches from the University of Hawaii football team? Want to get a wealth of knowledge, plus free lunch and a T-shirt?

    UH-Manoa, featuring assistant coaches Cal Lee and Alex Gerke, will hold a free football clinic from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for ages 8 to 12 years old, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 13 to 17 years old on Saturday at the Honokaa High School field.

    A free lunch will be offered after each class, and the first 100 to check-in will get a free T-shirt. Next to McDonald’s scratch a card and get a free burger promotion or the boss buying free pizza, there may be no better freebie deal than UH’s clinic.

    Lee will need all his powers of persuasion to convince Punahou blue-chip linebacker Manti Teo to stay home. The smart money has him going to a big-time West coast school. There won’t be another local gem like him until the next Halley’s Comet or roughly another century.

    “We’re right in the ballgame,” Lee said. “We want not only Manti but all the top players across the state. About 10 to 15 years ago, there used to be only small colleges coming to Hawaii to recruit. That’s all you saw. Lately, coaches from the Pac-10, Big 12, and as far east as Florida are coming in.

    “It gives kids a lot more opportunities where they can go. It’s more opportunities and it’s great for everybody.”

    Maybe Lee will discover a prospect who shines at the clinic. Like Mana Silva, Daniel Libre or Levi Legay. All three played on the Big Island and are members of the UH football team.

  45. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 7:45 am

    ai-eee-soos:
    They kept Steinhoff at right tackle. Barring an upset, he’ll open there.
    I know it’s easy to blame certain positions for the debacle in the Sugar Bowl, but it was a combination of different breakdowns. The Warriors have made several changes to correct those problems.
    UH wants to play the best five linemen. If Steinhoff moves to right guard, then Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner is displaced as a starter and Raphael Ieru falls off the depth chart. It becomes one of those things, which is the better O-line: Kia, Hisatake/Letuli and Steinhoff, or Kia, Tuioti-Mariner and Steinhoff.

    Nice decal! I have that magnet logo thing for my car. I remember taking it off one day when I washed my car. Then it was inside on my dash for a while and one day it was GONE. Poof! I was convinced someone stole it and I was very upset. Then I found it in the compartment on the door (yes, I put it there). Oops! That’s a big crime though – stealing someone’s UH stuff.

    Is there any chance Kainoa Lacount comes in and starts at right tackle?

  51. Dennis Halloran July 7, 2008 8:17 am

    Sili Lafiti was rumored to be switching back to Orange Coast College in a local blog. I e-mailed ST’s photo showing him at UH working out. Rumor crushed I hope!

    Thanks Garret for your post #39. Kevin Jakahi is a true Warrior, a fellow survivor. Too bad his journal page is now off the internet. His parents are long time Rainbow/Warrior season ticket holders. The following link to Dave Vinton’s blog will give you an idea of how strong a person he is. Have you met him bhf2?

  56. Jeremy July 7, 2008 8:58 am

    LOL, If Boise really had 100% attendance at their unsupervised workouts their fans wouldn’t be freaking out about Jeremy Childs right now…..Who might not play next season. Childs is their #1 WR.

  57. LK July 7, 2008 9:07 am

    ‘sup BananaFish,

    ST,

    I always thought that if UH went back to it’s green jerseys that color matched Aloha’s Field Turf it would give them an advantage, you know camouflage and all. I’m sure BananaFish can appreciate that 🙂

  58. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 9:29 am

    LK:
    I thought UH should go the other way and paint Aloha Stadium’s turf black.

  59. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 9:29 am

    Alojah Kakahiaka Gang

  60. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 9:29 am

    Mack said he’s going to let his team practice in Bronco Stadium. The Warriors have never practiced there.

  61. BG July 7, 2008 9:34 am

    GOOD MORNING TSAIKO NATION!

    Still adding to the list of Designated Drivers. If anyone would like to volunteer their possible services to a certain area of Oahu, please email me at tsaiko808 at yahoodotcom. Huge applause to those who have already stepped up.

  62. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 9:36 am

    I forget who made the suggestion to have the boys wear yellow visors on the helmets when they play at Boise so the field can look green but taught dat was pretty funny.

  63. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 9:42 am

    By the way folks, Pauoa Boy is actually a young person.
    So, in review: Rob25, Ronnie, J, UHfan808 and JaM are women; Pauoa Boy is young; and that’s BG’s wife, not his grand-daughter.

  64. LizKauai [Believer] July 7, 2008 9:48 am

    Pauoa Boy – I tried to add you as a myspace fren but your profile no like :mrgreen:

  66. SteveM July 7, 2008 9:59 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Bighilofan2 is stirring the Florida logistics pot. Mokie the Warrior asked yesterday who was going to the Florda game. Updated the Florida game Tsai-ko page yesterday:

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/florida08.html

    Looks like the Oregon State game Tsai-kos are getting closer to sorting out date and time for cattle calls and tailgate. Also rides to and from Corvallis while basing in Portland.

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/away08.html

    ❗ If you would like to be added to the listings above and establish contact with the other attending Tsai-kos, please email me the info shown in the tables.

  67. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 9:59 am

    There’s an interesting special on HBO about baseball in the 1960s. Through 1967, the minimum wage was $6,000 a year.
    Al Kaline worked in a non-baseball job every offseason.

  68. al July 7, 2008 10:00 am

    i also concur, the turf should be black and the home jerseys should be black with green and silver.

  69. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 10:02 am

    Of course, what they don’t tell you is how much baseball contrasted to what was going on in the rest of the country. There’s the war in Vietnam and the rise of the peace/protest movement, yet baseball goes on, oblivious to that. I always thought it was odd with the country in flux how the PGA also went on.

  70. LizKauai [Believer] July 7, 2008 10:04 am

    and da visors should be night vision – oh, and da lights should be turned off and da fans can use night vision glasses too.

    Hi de Ho!

  71. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:04 am

    g-nalo – no problem, garrans we’ll talk story at the Bash

    Aunty Liz – I will add you, sorry my page is secured lol

    ST – I think I’m same age as Princess Leila, so yeah we’re young or is it we just look good so you can’t tell if we’re only 21 or not mwahaha j/k

  72. LizKauai [Believer] July 7, 2008 10:05 am

    I cried when the Braves left Milwaukee. That did not make sense to me at all.

  73. SteveM July 7, 2008 10:09 am

    ST — in the mid-60’s minimum wage (mine) was $1.25. I think that comes to $2,600 a year full-time. I would be a $6,000 baseball player if I were able to hit, field, throw, and run fast… 🙂

  74. ryan July 7, 2008 10:12 am

    is Kainoa Lacount still on track to get here by Fall camp?

  75. al July 7, 2008 10:25 am

    baseball guru’s felt that life must go on and that the troops in southeast asia would want to keep track of their favorite teams.

    also, it was a time when tv was blossoming in the baseball world. therefore, financially it was imperative.

    that pay was for a non-bonus baby rookie. top players were 100k to 250k guys.

    so, that amount 6k is rather relative to what the rookies get now versus the top dogs.

  76. LizKauai [Believer] July 7, 2008 10:30 am

    Pauoa Boy- you have a very good-looking family!

  77. al July 7, 2008 10:33 am

    minimum mlb salary is now 390k.
    journeymen mlb players are 5-7m.
    elite mlb players are nearing 20m.

    so the current pay scale is relavent to the sixties.

  78. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:33 am

    Thank you aunty Liz

  79. (Jesse) James July 7, 2008 10:39 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

    Thanks again to Mr. and Mrs. Kekoa for welcoming us to their home. Great time with all the Tsaikos in attendance…

    ST – I am also a young guy….not much older than PB…at least Addahknowsports said so…..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  80. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 7, 2008 10:46 am

    Pauoa Boy:

    Sorry for not calling yesterday – every time I thought about it earlier in the day, my hands were covered with oil-based paint. By then, it was close to midnight so I decided that it was way too late.

    I’ll be in town this afternoon on business and, if at all possible, will drop by the unsupervised workouts. Then it’s on over to the India Cafe around 5 pm. Once the gift certificate is ready to be picked up, I’ll give you a call.

    KEKOA or anyone else: Will there be any time or any place for people to sit and talk quietly without shouting over the music at Thursday’s Blog Party? Or is the entertainment in a concert-like environment where the audience is expected to sit & listen quietly as a courtesy to the performers?

    Also, the start time is on SteveM’s website, but what is the finish time? When do we need to pick things up?

    Off to do some errands and then it’s on into town. Have a great Monday everyone.

  81. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:58 am

    Capitol -ist/WassupDoc – thanks no matter what time you call I on vacation so no sleep for me. I might be at the workouts today, so if I see you good if not then I pick em up laters.

    By the way what time the workouts today? 3 p.m.?

    Pretty interesting commentary about the $3 mil per year that Iowa’s coach is making.

    Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Les Miles, Nick Saban, Charlie Weis and Kirk Ferentz. Now, just like Sesame Street taught us, which one (or two in this case) does not belong? Once you take out Charlie Weis and his stupendous contract, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz takes home the award for grand larceny.

    All of those coaches, save Ferentz and the Chuckster, have won national titles, yet somehow Ferentz seems to escape the pressure that should accompany his member ship of the $3 million and over club. That’s right kids; Kirk Ferentz makes mo’ chedda’ than Mack Brown, Tommy Tubberville, Rich Rodriguez, Mark Richt and national runner-up Jim Tressel. Not only does Ferentz seem to avoid public scrutiny, the university seems intent on protecting him.

    His agent must be worth his weight in gold; maybe floating his name around every season for various new jobs has its payoffs.

    In the last three years, Ferentz has led Iowa to a 19-18 record—going 11-13 in the awful Big 10—with its last bowl win coming after the 2004 season. According to Rivals.com, Iowa has finished 6th in the Big 10 (38th nationally) in recruiting rankings from 2002-2008—slightly better than Wisconsin, Michigan State and Purdue—yet all three have performed better on the field.

    Just read this in this morning’s Advertiser. Our favorite Honolulu Stadium vendor, Howard Egami, passed away on May 14, 2008.

    A friend to all and a man of aloha, Howard will be truly missed. Mahalo, Howard. You are the best!

    I am busy babysitting. She is 7 months old and crawls like her pants are on fire. haha. gotta keep an eye on her at all times.

  86. WreckinEyez July 7, 2008 11:30 am

    Doc,

    You can walk around and talk to people while the band is playing. They are there to add to ambiance of the event. They however are only about ¼ of the event as there will be a program. I am sure you can go ahead and talk to some of the Tsaikos that you would like to talk to during the program; I don’t think they would mind.

    We have a lot of people to recognize and things to do. I suggest once you get in there starts chatting away. It will be moderately loud and upbeat in the hospitality room but you don’t have to worry about it too much as the outside area where the displays are should have minimal noise to hold a conversation.

    Remember there is a program…

  87. WarriorMojo July 7, 2008 11:32 am

    It becomes one of those things, which is the better O-line: Kia, Hisatake/Letuli and Steinhoff, or Kia, Tuioti-Mariner and Steinhoff.

    Okay, I’ll bite. The better O-line is Kia, HIsatake/Letuli and Steinhoff. Hands down. I’ve gone on record numerous times about my thoughts on Letuli so let me talk about the others.

    I watched Hisatake a lot during the Scout Bowl in Fall 2007 and the Warrior Bowl in April 2008. The good news is that he seems to have made TREMENDOUS improvement. He’s naturally very aggressive and early on had a tendency to commit too soon, to go after guys rather than wait for the defender to commit first. This is probably consistent with being a converted defensive lineman, but it got him in trouble sometimes as he was off balance, to the point where sometimes he could barely lay a hand on his man. In the Warrior Bowl, however, he seemed to be much more patient in letting the play develop. He’s got a naturally wide base and plays low His foot work seems to be pretty good. His aggression, now controlled, is not a good thing (think Sam Satele). The bottom line is that he’s got all the tools and his upside is huge.

    The problem I see in Hisatake starting for us in Florida is that he is still raw and lacks the polish that only comes with experience. If I recall correctly, he’s only played football for a few years so his lack of experience can’t really be helped. I actually wish he had another redshirt year, because I think he would be a two year killer for us if he started NEXT year as a junior. I’ll be a bit worried if he starts in the Swamp, but by mid-season I think he’ll be fine.

    Last thing I gotta say, though, is that this guy really, REALLY wants it. He’s one of those “trade-his-left-arm-to-play” kind of guys. I can’t imagine him ever giving up on a play. Last year he went to every home game, went down on the field for warmups in his jersey, then back into the stands. Was always into the game and cheering the team on. I’m not surprised that he’s developed into a leader of the UWs.

    Lafu. Hmmm, this is not going to be popular, but this is what I see. He played a bit in mop up last year, but didn’t really seem to stand out, good or bad. Seemed just okay, nothing more, nothing less. But he had a VERY tough game in the Warrior Bowl. I think he had two holding penalties called on him and a few others that were missed or let slide. Although he is supposedly very strong, he seemed to get run over a lot. Honestly, I was shocked. Not sure if he was hurt, but he seemed very stiff and not particularly mobile. I was very disappointed. I hope that was just a bad game for him. And I hope he doesn’t kill me.

    Steiny is actually okay at RT. He’s actually a bit of a tweener between RT and LT. It seems like he would be a natural LT given his body type, but he apparently feels more comfortable on the right and asked to be switched last year. He has some problems with good outside speed rushers, but most tackles do. Dane Uperesa did. Brandon Eaton did and ended up moving to RG. I don’t think Steiny has the pop necessary to play inside. His rep took a big hit after the Sugar Bowl, but that wasn’t fair. Predictable play calling, no variation of the snap count, the UGA DE being unearthly quick, etc., etc. Steiny will be all right, but La Count could swoop in and get the nod if he is as good as billed. Very tough thing to do, though, in the three weeks between fall camp and Florida.

    Okay, gotta Esme.

  88. WarriorMojo July 7, 2008 11:40 am

    His aggression, now controlled, is not a good thing (think Sam Satele).

    “IS” a good thing. “IS” a good thing.

    Is NOT a “BAD” thing.

    SIgh.

  99. WreckinEyez July 7, 2008 1:42 pm

    Hey Liz,

    Soprry I couldn’t be there at practice this past Sunday, I know you guys had a blast! Kekoa’s place is always a party! I had way too many things to do this weekend which included staying up till 2:30 this morning just to finish a letter of recomendation that I need to send out.

    Lots of personal family events fall the day after the 4th of July every year which makes it a very busy time for us. Looking forward to seeing you at the blog bash.

    On another note, tongiht I will be making calls to solidify the program for the bash.

  100. (Jesse) James July 7, 2008 1:45 pm

    Wreck..still here…prepping for the blog bash on Thursday….

    Mojo – have to agree with most of your analysis of the O-Line except for Lafu as I haven’t really watched him play so I can’t make a comment on that. When I first started playing, I had the same problem as Hisatake in that I was too agressive and overcommitted on the O-Line. The coaches saw that and switched me to D which I was better suited to play anyway…..

  101. homey ® as Esme July 7, 2008 1:51 pm

  110. homey ® July 7, 2008 2:27 pm

    Hi XLiz! More like watching TV and the only channel to watch is the Wii channel.

    Wreck – by overall do you mean comfort, ambiance, views, pleasant passengers, etc. Where does the bus drop you off? Is there still a rope that you pull that rings a bell that lets the bus driver know you want to de-bus?

  111. Jason July 7, 2008 2:28 pm

    homey The CityExpress A or the 4 will take you to UH.

  112. WreckinEyez July 7, 2008 2:31 pm

    The A Bus skips stops… has more seating and ends at UH. Beats all the other routes in time saved.

  113. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 2:31 pm

    Kainoa LaCount is expected to arrive in time for training camp.

  114. LizKauai [Believer] July 7, 2008 2:31 pm

    xs-homey- I pick the Wii channel over America’s Best Gangstah Dance Group channel any time!

  115. Jason July 7, 2008 2:34 pm

    Route 4 is more crowded, but CityExpress A goes down Kapi‘olani, so get lots of traffic. Either way is fine, though, they both take about 20 minutes. If you catch the A, you go down Kapi‘olani, turn onto University, then get off at the last stop, Sinclair Circle. If you catch the 4, you go up Alapa‘i, go into Makiki via Kīna‘u, Ward, and Thurston, go down Wilder past Punahou, and turn onto University from Metcalf. Get off at University and Dole, outside Tsukuneya.

    You’ll most likely catch the A, but don’t hesitate to catch the 4 if it comes first.

  116. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 2:35 pm

    The interesting one is Francis Maka, who still is awaiting clearance. The holdup apparently is at Arizona, where there have been turnovers and it’s difficulty in accessing medical/playing records.
    Here’s the deal: He suffers a knee injury in 2003 training camp. The injury is bad enough to keep him from also playing in 2004. He then goes to a junior college for two years, then comes here for a year. That’s five years — the maximum. Only there’s an NCCC leniency policy that if an injury keeps a player out for two consecutive years, he’s eligible — although not guaranteed — to regain one of the years back.
    For now, Maka is awaiting paper work from Arizona.

  117. Jason July 7, 2008 2:40 pm

    And yes, there is a stop cord. If you catch the A, then no need pull, cause Sinclair Circle is the last stop. If you catch the 4, pull it after the University and Metcalf stop. Most people get off at University and Metcalf, although you want to get off at University and Dole if you want to go to the SSC.

  118. (Jesse) James July 7, 2008 2:45 pm

    homey…the cord doesn’t ring a bell like in the old days. The chord now has a “ding” sound and a voice says, “STOP REQUESTED”. Google the bus and it has the routes and times of both the #4 and Express A.

  119. HiFlyer July 7, 2008 2:49 pm

    LizK, nice photos and videos.

    Kekoa, the tapa border in the garage is looking good.

    HiFlyer- woulda been more videos but some went over the size limits for uploading. One thing for sure – there will be no shortage of great music on Thursday! The Kekoa ohana makes a significant impact on da Tsai-ko band!

    ok.
    hiho!

    You can also use Google Transit to plan your bus ride. Just enter the location from which you want to start and end, or zoom in and click on the bus icons to indicate your start and end points. You can also specify when you want to leave, or by what time you want to arrive at your location. Sometimes the results are wacky, though, so take what the software gives you with a grain of salt.

    Here are the results for the ride you need.

    Aw frick, I’ll just find a ride. Kinda embarrassing standing on the bus chair trying to reach the rope.

  148. Barry Markowitz July 7, 2008 5:18 pm

    Mojo, Despite my conflict of interest…I think you will learn that Lafu Tuioti-Mariner has those intangible qualities that every head coach wants in there when you are up against a major big time opponent. Lafu 1) obviously has incredible lower body strength and plays low, 2) Lafu has an incredible hyper space kine ability at the snap to get in the defender’s face (you could only see this by watching practice or games…I have done so more intimately by isolation shots video and still w/big lenses) 3) Lafu is the most respected leader by the other players on the o-line and probably the d-line too (since he was d-line as a frosh..and they have to play against him and know his awesome abilities). It is hard to judge a kid in a mop up role, as the tempo of the game is different, and sometimes you don’t play well against opponents that have already quit.

  149. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2008 5:51 pm

    I hope Garret forgives me for this off topic post… but it was just too psycho to resist.

    “USA Today estimates that about half of the 42 states that have lotteries were, as of early July, continuing to sell tickets after the top prizes are claimed. Lottery officials from some states say the practice is fair because lesser prizes are still available, and they say tickets and lottery Web sites make that clear.

    In New Jersey, tickets for the “$1,000,000 Explosion” scratch-off game were still on sale last week, even though the million-dollar grand prize was already awarded.

    Lottery ticket buyers outside a New Jersey convenience store were stunned to hear the news.”

    I was thinking, “Whom would I invite if I won?” Just daydreaming, cause I’m bored. And I realized, that is a really hard question to answer. Cause there are so many Tsaikos here I’d like to invite in appreciation of their tremendous generosity and kindness, both to me personally and to the group as a whole. In terms of money, time, efforts, prayers, and other kindnesses, these people are all so amazing. Not to mention our leader and his family, we can’t forget their sacrifices. I would think we might need an entire section of Aloha Stadium. 😛

  185. Garret July 7, 2008 8:20 pm

    Liz,

    I don’t mind you posting that article–I hadn’t seen it before and thought that was very interesting! I just do the free play links after 9pm HST because ST set a rule a long time ago to try to keep the off-topic posts until after 9pm. I know that lots of off-topic stuff occurs before then, but I figured that at least I could get the free play links that I post to follow ST’s direction.

    I’m actually going to pass that link along to my free play blog: http://linkcollection.wordpress.com

    Manoa,

    Sorry I didn’t respond to you in yesterday’s blog. Yes, I read engadget and normally find at least one thing each day that is pretty interesting. Today I saw something that would interest people here:

    iRobot is apparently working on a lawn-mowing Roomba:
    http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/06/irobot-still-working-on-lawn-mowing-roomba/

  187. Garret July 7, 2008 8:30 pm

    That is a really cool grand prize! I should buy raffle tickets just to help the cause (the money goes to UH Athletics, right?)…but do the mainland Tsaikos really have a way to buy the raffle tickets and how would that be handled? I was honestly thinking about it before the prize announcement today–I could afford $20 for raffle tickets since at least it would support the program.

    Anyway, it would probably be too difficult to monitor raffle tickets for the mainland folks. Plus, if we win glassware or something like that then it would be really hard (and not inexpensive) to mail. But if there is something set up for the mainland folks, please post it here…maybe next year this could be done.

    I think everybody answered the question well about Mario and Sonic goes to the Olympics. y favorites are the Dream Events–Dream fencing, Dream ping pong, Dream Platform–plus archery. The best event for novices would be the running events, with 100m being a good choice…the hurdles would be pretty funny though. The best event for exercise is the rowing…good workout, especially if done multiple times in a row!

    Thanks again to Stretch and gigi for their input. I hope we’re able to pull off our contest.

  194. Garret July 7, 2008 9:01 pm

    By the way, I was going to suggest to the person setting up the Mario & Sonic party that he doesn’t have to buy 4 sets of remotes/nunchucks. Other people who have Wiis can bring over their remotes and nunchucks and they can easily be synced to their Wii. Plus that way people could bring over their Mii characters, which would save time on the day of event.

    You can also have people e-mail their Miis to your Wii so that it is ready for the day of the event.

  195. Garret July 7, 2008 9:04 pm

    oldie,

    Sorry, I didn’t look up who made the request–I knew that it was one of the Tsaikos who I recognized and had chatted with before on the blog. I hope that you can pull off your contest!

    I think you can do 8 runners at a time.

    Some events (ping pong, fencing, etc) let you do a 4-player mini-tournament, so you could end up with a winner from those 4 and then each of the winners of their brackets could face off in a 4-player final tournament.

  196. Garret July 7, 2008 9:08 pm

    gigi,

    In 1999 I advised 4 guys on their senior projects at Santa Clara. They were roomates who hated to mow the lawn in the house they were renting. So, they decided to build an autonomous lawn mower. Even though they had no budget and no previous experience, they were able to build something that actually did what they wanted!

    I still keep in contact with some of those guys. Such fun people and they have done well since graduation…not surprising to me because they were such good people.

    Could Samson be snapping the ball to Brett Favre this season?

    I know that some of you out there are saying of Favre becoming a Dolphin, ”It could never happen.” But it could, and I’ll tell you why.

    I know some others are saying, ”It should never happen.” But you’re wrong. And I’ll tell you why on that, too.

    Remember that need + need = possibility.

    Favre by most indications is a quarterback who needs to play again. Seems he has had a change of heart and wishes to recant his March 4 retirement, but Green Bay appears to have yanked away the welcome mat, like Lucy used to yank away the football just as Charlie Brown was about to kick it.

    But Miami is a team that needs a QB it can trust and rely on in 2008. Favre last missed a game in 1992. Seriously. Tomorrow’s sunrise cannot be trusted and relied on like this dude.

    So here’s what you do, Dolphins: You do what Green Bay isn’t doing. You welcome Favre back to football. You trade lame-duck Jason Taylor (whom the Packers have coveted) to get him. You put McCown up for sale. And then you let Beck and Henne develop for a year under the unhurried tutelage of a master — thereby being as good a team as you can be right now while also letting the roots take on future success at that position.

    Meantime, Favre has yet to file formal retirement papers with the league, meaning he is technically an active player with three years left on his contract.

    So if he chose to come back but the Packers weren’t interested, they’d have to trade him or release him. In that scenario The Dancing Defensive End, No. 99, might be enough to make a deal work.

    GARRET,

    I read that there is a robotic gutter cleaner, too. I was tempted to buy it, but hubby said it probably would not get rid of the mud inside our gutter — not to mention a small avocado tree that was growing in the gutter!

    I guess dirt from a higher elevation blew into our gutter, mixed with rain, and resulted in mud. How we got an avocado tree is beyond our ken!

    duffer,

    That is a really nice offer! Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be fair to the other mainland Tsaikos that contribute so much unless we had some way for all to have a chance at the raffle. I should have thought about this earlier and brought it up awhile back…so, I can wait until next year when I can (hopefully) attend or when something might be set up for Paypal payments or checks.

    I want to get to Maui really badly but I have no idea when I could make it. I think I need to take my in-laws on a Hawaii cruise, as that would be a great way for them and my kids to see the different islands.

  210. oldie July 7, 2008 9:38 pm

    Garret,

    Thanks. Not sure how elaborate we can get since we probably will be doing the games during lunch break. I think we’ll run a couple of heats at a time and spread the games over the time the Olympics take place.

  211. Garret July 7, 2008 9:41 pm

    Amazing that UCLA has lost their second verbal commit already. It is so early in the recruiting process and players have been able to commit and decommit already!

    UCLA’s football program was dealt another blow Monday as recruit Marlon Pollard, a former Valencia High cornerback, de-committed from the Bruins and committed to Notre Dame.

    Pollard is the second defensive back in eight days to de-committ from UCLA. Byron Moore of Narbonne changed his mind and committed to USC last week.

    Losing two recruits isn’t devastating for the Bruins, but it raises questions as to whether defections will become a trend. Rick Neuheisel has yet to even coach his first UCLA game.

  212. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 9:46 pm

    Garret – Speaking of Jason Taylor I lost all respect for that mahu! Come on DE on dancing with the stars and if you’ve ever watched it, he hinted some definite Broke Back moves in there. I know all the chicks just drool over this guy but please he lost all his manhood and my respect when he rather had been twinkle toes instead of working out and getting ready for the upcoming season with his team in which he is looked upon as a leader. If I was a teammate I would have kicked his arse. What you just mentioned in #207 would be great for the Dolphins I think. I would trade twinkle toes away, you gotta be kidding me you’d rather dance then play football in which you are an All-Pro, what the heo has this world come too nowadays? Auwe…

  213. Garret July 7, 2008 9:53 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

    The worst thing that Jason Taylor did in my opinion was *after* Dancing with the Stars was over and the Dolphins had a mandatory mini-camp…and he instead chose to attend another event instead! He was done with the TV show and flew across the country for his event instead of practicing with his teammates!

  214. gigi-hawaii © July 7, 2008 9:54 pm

    PB, I watched Dancing with the Stars and was impressed by their athleticism. Didn’t Emmitt Smith win a previous season?

    Anyway, I didn’t think Jason Taylor danced all that well. However, he brought good publicity for a failing football team.

    I voted for Kristi Yamaguchi and was happy she won.

  215. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 9:58 pm

    Yup, regardless I lost all respect for that twinkle toes

  216. Garret July 7, 2008 10:04 pm

    SteveM,

    I thought you might find this interesting: we are celebrating my Yakudoshi by taking a 5-day cruise from San Diego to Mexico on Carnival in October. We’ll have 4 cabins with 8 adults and 5 kids–my family, my parents, my sister’s family, and one of Lori’s close friends who will basically be on her honeymoon with her husband of less than 2 months at that time.

    Prices were good–$359 per adult and $20 per kid before taxes and fees. The fuel surcharge was a little painful, but not too bad. My kids are looking forward to being on a cruise and Carnival is supposed to have lots of fun activities for kids…plus, that will give the adults time to hit the casino!

    We leave on the day of the Fresno State game, so at least my parents will not miss a home game. Plus, that is the week that school is out in Hawaii so my nephew will not miss school.

  217. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:09 pm

    gigi – Emmitt Smith was retired so it was okay that he did the show cause he wasn’t hurting anybody. Jason Taylor on the other hand let his team down by doing the show during a time where he should have been on the field with his teammates in OTA’s, minicamps, etc… First of all football is his job, getting paid millions of dollars to do one thing…play football, not go dancing with the stars. You are a veteran leader, All-Pro DE and you choose other things than being with your team is an insult and disgrace to his organization and team. To me the only publicity he brought to the Dolphins organization is by making them the laughing stock of the NFL.

  218. BG July 7, 2008 10:11 pm

    Whoa! I was typing in this comment box and the next thing I knew, I was transported to a website that was two pages away in my history! YIKES! Had to pull down the history and jump back up here!

    Anyways, JaM, please send your email to “Tsaiko808 at Yahoodotcom” if you’re still interested in being part of the designated driver squad.

    Thanks

  219. Kekoa July 7, 2008 10:14 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko City Dwellers!
    Finally shook the effects of an all day family funeral event. It’s been a rough few weeks in our family. I missed my cousin Mayor Brian Baptiste’s funeral on Kauai Sunday, and my dear Aunty Patsy’s services today was very touching. These two represented a string of 4 different funerals within the past 3 weeks

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
    Happy Yakudoshi Garret!
    Does it feel like you’ve aged gracefully?
    May you have many happy returns.
  220. BG July 7, 2008 10:15 pm
    PB
    Just great to have you here. For sure we’ll raise a toast on Thursday!
    Who drugged the blog?
  222. gigi-hawaii © July 7, 2008 10:21 pm
    PB, there was a segment on Dancing with the Stars, in which DAN MARINO spoke to Jason Taylor on video. He said he and the team were all rooting for him and expected him to bring home the trophy!
    I think Jason was trained and conditioned physically and mentally by the vigorous dancing workouts he had to endure. So no worry! He will be ready to play football. It’s not like he goofed off and watched TV all day.
    +
  223. gigi-hawaii © July 7, 2008 10:28 pm
    Kekoa, please accept my condolences. I hope the celebration of their lives was a good one.
    My sister-in-law would have been happy and proud of hers. There were so many tributes to her by her many friends!
  224. SteveM July 7, 2008 10:31 pm
    Garret — sounds like a good Mexico short cruise…going to Cabo San Lucas and back?
    People might not know that the fares are based on double occupancy, but the 3rd person in the cabin goes in at around 35% (approx.) and a 4th even lower. Even applies to adults but I can’t see 3 large Tsai-kos in a regular cabin 🙂
    Noted your comment about a Hawaii cruise. Alas, in the same time frame, a 7-day Hawaii cruise on the Pride of America (the last NCL ship we have), is in the $1,300 + range. If you don’t mind 4 days transit time between San Diego and Hawaii each way, best to look at the 14-15 day cruises round-trip from San Diego/LA on Royal Caribbean, Holland America, or Princess. These are listed at $1,399 to $1,799. No need for air fare 🙂
  225. BG July 7, 2008 10:36 pm
    With the blog so slooooow, this is my last post tonight.
    A super round of congratulations for Rich and Lori Miano…a really wonderful couple!
    The blog party on Thursday is full of problems like:
    1. There’s not enough time to chit chat. Most tsaikos need 4 hours just to warm up.
    2. There’s not enought time to adequately display the cornucopia of talent that lurks behind blog names. It could easily fill up a whole weekend and then some!
    3. There’s not enough time to regale ourselves with winsome memories as we view the “cul cha” and memorabilia.
    4. We can’t stream it live to all our out-of-town braddahs and sistahs.
    Other than that…we’re going to make memories! And erect another milestone for the Tsaiko Nation.
  226. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:37 pm
    gigi – and that’s probably the reason why the Dolphins will never win a Super Bowl, too busy focusing on dancing, I feel bad for Samson Satele and Reagan Mauia having to be a part of that pathetic organization. Sorry aunty gigi but as a football player myself if I had a teammate who’d rather go dancing then be a part of the team and do other things I would seriously want to kick his arse! In the locker room is a different story than being on TV, so his teammates were probably just being nice but I bet they will be toughening him up in the locker room for sure!
  227. Addahknowsports July 7, 2008 10:39 pm
    ST-
    Please check your email. It’s a little early, but I didn’t want to be stressing before blog party.
  229. gigi-hawaii © July 7, 2008 10:41 pm
    PB, it will be interesting to see what happens next. Will Jason play for one more year and then retire? Will he pursue a Hollywood career? Or will he go to another team?
  230. Addahknowsports© July 7, 2008 10:42 pm
    test
  231. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:43 pm
    A-sports – tell your fren LK thanks for the tag, nice seeing you and A-Joe again, see you at the Bash
  232. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2008 10:49 pm
    gigi – I think he has a few more years left in the tank cause he is in good shape still. Then probably pursue a acting career cause he has the pretty boy look. Actually think he had some stints in a TV show or movie… Oh well, heard though that the Dolphins are getting tired of him and are looking to maybe get rid of him, but he is an All-Pro and comes with a pretty hefty price tag so I dunno…
    A quick reminder about the Kailua Relay for Life this Saturday:
    A few months ago, Jason encouraged Warrior Beat regulars to help his efforts to raise funds for the Relay For Life event held on campus – in fact, at Cooke Field.
    At the time, we said that we would be taking part in the Kailua Relay For Life – it .
    starts on Saturday, July 12, around 3 pm and ends on Sunday, July 13 at 7 am at Kailua Beach Park in the section opposite Buzz’s on the road going into Lanikai.
    There’ll be entertainment, food, games, talk story time, and, of course, the opportunity to take part in the Relay itself – all in a location often named as one of the finest beaches in the world.
    Here’s how you can support the Kailua event even if you don’t attend in person. Please make a donation to honor someone who has dealt with cancer or to recognize someone who’s had a job promotion or a birthday or graduation in the family or whatever needs to be celebrated.
    Make your check payable to the American Cancer Society. If you want it to go to the Windward Branch of the American Cancer Society, then note on the memo line it is for the Kailua Relay For Life. If you want it to go to the larger organization, just leave the memo line blank.
    You can mail it to the American Cancer Society, Windward Unit, 130 Kailua Road, Suite 102B, Kailua, HI 96734. Or you can give it to DrDoc or me at the Blog Bash on July 10 and we’ll deliver all the checks to the Windward Unit in one bundle.
    We’re recognizing four Warrior Beat families this way
    *********
    Tomorrow morning I’ll be posting details about another volunteer opportunity on Saturday afternoon, July 19, in Nu`uanu Valley – this time for the Family Promise of Hawai`i program.
    Family Promise of Hawai’i is an innovative program set up to help families with children escape homelessness. Its mission is to mobilize existing community resources to help families experiencing homelessness transition to sustainable independence.
    This is done by developing, training, and supporting a network of interfaith congregations who host families quarterly. Each host site provides a safe place to sleep, good food, and generous hospitality for one week at a time before moving on to another host site. In addition, other nearby religious communities which may not have the facilities for overnight stays join in as helping congregations.
    During the day, guests work, pursue employment, attend school, or enroll in job training. A Family Center provides access to phones, mail, fax, a copier, showers, and laundry facilities. The program provides transportation to and from the host sites and the Family Center.
    Three to five families (up to 14 people) can be accommodated by each network at any given time. In March 2006, the Windward Network and Family Center opened while the Honolulu network, which opened in July 2007, will be celebrating its first birthday on July 19.
    More to come tomorrow.
    Mahalo for your support of these wonderful community programs.
    DESIGNATED DRIVERS NEEDED
    Drivers for various areas are still needed to sign up. This support system is NOT only for the obviously inebriated. Even having a couple of drinks will impair to a certain degree…a person is just not LEGALLY drunk. A couple of drinks and being tired can be a really bad combination…remember those news stories of cars crossing the centerline and causing heartache for innocent people? Some Tsaikos may just want to be on the safe side and let someone else do the driving. We can help them. It’s not being “wimpy” or “a bother” to hook up with a designated driver.
    If you’re not planning to drink and can extend a helping hand, please email me at “tsaiko808 at yahoodotcom” right away so there’s the possibility of arranging rides in advance.
    We can make a difference.
