Lafaele awaiting the Bills

Ran into Michael Lafaele today. He said he just returned from a tryout with the Buffalo Bills. He said the Bills are evaluating their situation, and that there’s a possibility he might be invited to training camp.

Well, at least there’s a timetable for installing the new turf at Cooke … er, Ching Field.
According to Shannon Wood, UH has confirmed that July 1 is the deadline to submit an intent to bid on the project.
The deadline for submitting a bid is 2:30 p.m. July 11. On that day, the bids will be opened. The bid-opening meeting is open to the public.
Work on the field could start two weeks after that. There is a 90-day window to complete the project.

In our youth, few things are as precious as our rides. The best man at my wedding, Johnny Iwashita, used to call his car “The Cherry.” I had this white Toyota that I called “The Onion” because of its off-white color. My friends called it that because when you peeled open the door you wanted to cry. (OK, OK, I’m a little messy.)
Because of affordability and convenience, the best rides often have two wheels. Here’s running back Daniel Libre getting ready to go to work:

Here’s slotback Aaron Bain (using wideout Dylan Linkner’s mo-ped):

And here’s slotback Kealoha Pilares’s mo-ped:

Then Pilares shows us one of the secrets of his mo-ped: camouflage-patterned duct tape!

Good morning Stephen and Tsai-kos everywhere! ! Hi Loa, when are you going to catch some of the practices?? They’e looking better, at least yesterday the ball wasn’t hitting the ground as much as last week.

I’m having a hard time identifying the guys. Some have cut their hair and of course I’m lost without the jersey colors and numbers. Hope that they’re getting used to the heat and humidity cuz it’s going to be a lot worse in Fla.

    Have a good day all!!

  5. I Believe June 24, 2008 7:27 am

Aloha all- I second Loa’s congrats (yesterday’s post) to Tasha Kai for making the US Women’s Olympic Soccer Team! Ferd’s column was great- tie into Warrior football which I never knew!

  6. LK June 24, 2008 7:39 am

    Good morning,

My ride was a ten year old ’71 Toyota station wagon, nicknamed the “Wasted Wagon”. As bad as it was it was still safer than a moped.

  7. Kekoa June 24, 2008 7:41 am

Loa ~ Yep…going bring Pops to see these new guys bump and run awhile. Are you coming to the bash?

Hi myki…sj disappeared on us Sunday!…He was supposed to come take pitcha of da Tsaiko All Star Band trying desperately to sober up enuff to practice!…Nah j/k, he dashed befoa we had chance foa tell ‘um. My 1st ride in High School was a 4 door, lame looking ’57 Ford Fairlane that I treated as if it were a ’57 T-Bird instead. It was still cool in those days to have ANY kine wheels to cruise in. Then, you started to learn how to trade up and fix up to what you really wanted to be seen in!…Poof! Low Ri-der – I’m a LowRider!

  26. g-nalo June 24, 2008 8:05 am

    good morning!

never really had my own ride in high school nor college for that matter, but used our ‘family’ cars as my parents upgraded. the first one was a Valiant, automatic, push buttons to change gears, parking brake was a small lever next to the buttons. probably no one remembers it now, haaaa.

DON’T try this at home but back then Valiant got dirty so went up to Pali Lookout and open all the doors. ok ok i know that wasn’t cool looking back NOW, just one of those “young and dumb” acks.

Kekoa, check your e-mail, l’dat. Don’t keep me in suspense!

Just skimmed yesterday’s blog chat and noticed Homey and James used my name in vain yesterday… No wonder so itchy! *rubbing ears*

Oh, and … good morning, ST!

Great photos of the boys with their rides!

Makes me reminisce: I pedaled a gazillion-pound STEEL Free Spirit 10-speed bike all around campus and all around town throughout college. Couldn’t afford those fancy light-alloy models. Buggah was heavy — but it kept me in shape! I could sprint all the way up Waialae Ave. (of course, I had a great incentive — I usually was headed for donuts at Kimuraya Bakery… heh).

Finally a few months before graduation, I started working at the Tiser, so I needed a car, so I bought a Geo Prizm. And drove THAT buggah for 11 years. Never gave a day of trouble, ever. Sold it only because it lacked air bags, antilock brakes and other safety features. I still see it around town, driven by the guy I sold it to; apparently it’s still humming almost 20 years later!

Don’t try to do the math. It’s embarrassing.

OK, back later. Have a great day, gang!

next up was a corvair with the push button auto trans controls. i believe it to be a vintage 1961 4 banger that ran on more oil than gas. i got it for 50 bucks. it came equipped with the fred flintstone holes in the floor for quick start ups. at least it could carry two surfboards without the roof caving ing.

  44. NYUH June 24, 2008 8:33 am

    Stephen,

What happened to the numbers on the posts? Also did you catch my suggestion that a rating system or rather a flagging system be set up to identify the outstanding posts like Garret’s article yesterday on how the BCS has cost college football billions? Some way to flag the interesting posts will diminish concerns for the chit-chat and help us catch the highlights if we can’t follow along that day. Mahalo.

  45. Stretch June 24, 2008 8:33 am

Since the last post, I have added 5 more for a total of 66.

    Re: Mopeds
I know a guy who was riding a moped, starting acting stupid trying to do tricks, fell down and hit his head pretty good. Since that time, he hasn’t been himself and because of the head injuries, is not able to work.

  51. (Jesse) James June 24, 2008 8:51 am

Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes….(gee, remember when there was only one woman on this blog?)

I agree about the guys being careful on those rides. No injuries please. Remember Roethlisberger and his collision on his bike…cost him (and the team) a lot that season….

One of my first rides in high school was a VW Bug….was a good car but of course I was looking for something with more speed so by my senior year (after saving up da cash) I bought a used Buick Regal Grand National which at the time was one of the fastest production street vehicles around. You guys probably seen those around. It was a G-body like the Cutlass Supreme, standard Buick Regal, and Monte Carlo SS….lots of cops had these types of vehicles. After adding intake kits, Kenne Bell computer chips, flowmaster exhausts, among other things, the car really ran like the wind….now I wish I kept it…..dang….

Now I drive a Chevy Impala, but also have a bike that I love to ride but am currently rebuilding….

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Don’t forget about the Tsaikoparty…going be fun….. 🙂

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid June 24, 2008 8:51 am

Good Morning ST, Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

Woohoo! I’m looking forward to the Big Blog Bash!

Everyone talking about their rides? If I even thought about getting a motorized two-wheel anything, my parents woulda hung me by my toes. In the 8th grade, I tried my friend’s dirt bike. I considered myself lucky I didn’t slam myself into his tetherball pole.

I got a second hand Toyota corolla from my mom’s friend. She was a teacher and drove to work (5 minutes away) and the market (another 5 minutes away) and back home. When I got it, the mileage was insanely low. The only thing, it was the mustardy color of bird doodoo. But it was very reliable.
When my brother was old enough to drive and I moved away, he souped it up, painted it white and put things in it that would blow out your ears.
After that, it went to my mom’s friend who turned it into a graffiti-mobile.
Everyone got a lot of mileage and memories out of it.

  62. homey ® June 24, 2008 9:11 am

  63. Stretch June 24, 2008 9:15 am

homey – he emailed and said that he would show up for a short time then disappear.

    Re; Cooke Field Turf
Bids are due Friday 430pm. Soon after that, we should know who is the low bidder for the project. At least we know UH has taken the first step towards getting this blackeye fixed.

  64. homey ® June 24, 2008 9:15 am

NYUH – Since this isn’t a forum type of bulletin board I highly doubt the webmaster techies can modify the code to do a rating system for each post. And if by some miracle they can pull off a rating system it wouldn’t be used for it’s intended purpose. You know how “out of the box” koakane can get.

  65. (Jesse) James June 24, 2008 9:16 am

  67. addahknowjoe June 24, 2008 9:19 am

    Mornin’ everyone-

My first ride in high school was an old faded Metallic Blue ’52 Ford Pick up Truck inherited through my older brothers. Friends called it, “The Sanford” cause it was the same model truck on the TV series, Sanford and Sons. (Not to mention my dad had a rubbish hauling business to boot) Friends would sing the theme song as I drove by.

It also was fondly referred to as, “The Cancer Machine” for all the white billowing smoke it pumped out. Could see me driving anywhere in Ka’u for miles…

“Oh no! Get fire down Punalu’u?”

“Nah! Az da Cancer Machine going beach!”

  68. Addahknowsports© June 24, 2008 9:21 am

I think Homey’s arm muscles are the size of Esme’s waist.

Homes, how come you talking about size anyway??

  69. bonar June 24, 2008 9:21 am

Stretch: I think Tony Ching is the guy. There seems to be at least one significant injury to the football team a year due to moped mishaps.

My first car? A 1949 Mercury chopped and channeled and painted maroon which three of us restored. Won it playing Scrabble. I later upgraded to a bright yellow 1955 Ford and from there to a T-Bird and then a Mustang. After that, I settled down with DrDoc and drove classic restored VWs until last summer – now the car of choice is a 20-year-old Toyota.

How did we get so off-topic?

When is the next Unsupervised Workout and at what time? I have to stay in town tomorrow for a 6 pm meeting so maybe I’ll mosey on up to UH for some hot summer fun l

How was the steak? Made to order?

Tony Ching used his notoriety and turn his accident and injury into a positive force to promote safety. To this day he still champions the cause.

Your other friend, is he still not the same after his foolish and sophmoric mishap? I hope he gets better someday.

Your friend reminds me of my RA in college. He wen “small kine borrow” this girls’ moped from ‘Ilima tower, drove up and around to the front of the cafeteria, tried to do a pop willie but, lost control of the bike from under him. Full on Three Stooges “face plant” right in front of the lunch crowd. Everyone went off! Thank Goodness the ground wen broke his fall!

    Ho, 911 medivac!

I didn’t have a car until my mid-twenties. Used public tran & walked in Hawaii & SF. That’s why I support light rail; it really works for the masses in saving time & money. I used BART for years to commute from the East Bay to SF. It wasn’t very noisy.

The first car I had was a ’71 SuperBeetle. The engine, which I rebuilt twice, is in our ’68 VW which sits in the backyard waiting for my son to convert the engine to something greener.

  88. (Jesse) James June 24, 2008 10:03 am

    stretch/addahknow…

I know someone who did the same thing at UH but by Varney Circle. He was trying to impress some girls with his popa wheelie skills…needless to say, he had none…lucky for him he only bruised his elbows and had some scrapes…

I actually had to lay my bike down once near the north shore…lucky I was only going about 6 miles per hour because of traffic. Got some road rash….but my bike was scratched….ouch…

I echo what lots of other people said about wearing helmets while driving mopeds or motorcycles! There are so many accidents each year, it seems over one per year for UH football players, and I’d hate for a player to be hurt and miss out on the season, on school, and set back in life.

  94. Garret June 24, 2008 10:29 am

UCLA just lost an offensive lineman due to an ATV accident.

UCLA’s already thin offensive line took another hit over the weekend when tackle Sean Sheller was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident, the school announced Monday.

Sheller, a redshirt sophomore from Walnut, suffered an open wound on the inside of his left ankle, and he also injured his left knee. He will have an MRI on the left knee in the near future to determine the severity of the injury.

His status is unclear, making the status of UCLA’s line, which returns just two starters, even murkier.

  95. Iron Chef Genji June 24, 2008 10:31 am

    homey-san,

Buffet was not traditional all you can eat buffet. You take chisai size portion so everybody get chance to sample everything. Then after all Tsaiko-sans get their plates and enjoy reminiscing and festivities you go help yourself to more chisai portions.

Samurai Al placed another order of poke. He told me was the winnah’z and was the hot item to pupu.

What? You like challenge me to cook-off?

  96. homey ® June 24, 2008 10:41 am

  97. Kojack June 24, 2008 10:41 am

Wea da scoops on how da team developing, like you can find if you reading one SC blog? Tsai, give us da scoops, la dat from the practices! Who working hard, who made the hardest hits, who hobbling, good catches, passing, the competition going on since we cannot make it ova dea. Tanks ah!

  98. Stretch June 24, 2008 10:42 am

Since the Iron Chef has spoken and others have talked about it the past, the food for the July 10 is a buffet. You can go through the food line set up and choose what you want to eat. It is NOT “all you can eat”. Please understand the difference. We will have a set quantity of food that will be adequate to feed everyone at “normal” portions.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffet

A buffet is a meal serving system where patrons serve themselves. It is a popular method of feeding large numbers of people with minimal staff.

One form of buffet is to have a line of food serving stalls filled with fixed portions of food; customers take whatever food items they want as they walk along and pay at the end for each piece. This form is most commonly seen in cafeterias.

Another form known as the all-you-can-eat buffet is free in form: customers pay a fixed fee and can then help themselves to as much food as they wish to eat in a single meal.

  99. Garret June 24, 2008 10:46 am

We had mentioned Kai Maiava in this blog when the news came out that he was going to transfer from Colorado. So, I figured I should pass this note along about how he started classes at UCLA.

Also, offensive lineman Kai Maiava, a transfer from Colorado, and quarterback Kevin Prince (Crespi High) attended their first classes today.

  100. homey ® June 24, 2008 10:47 am

It’s a good thing I only eat “normal” portions or else the buffet police will escort me out if the room.

Now for the important part…Is the beer bottomless?

  101. Garret June 24, 2008 10:48 am

We should know by next week if Cinci’s starting QB will get his 6th season and get to face UH this season.

UC coach Brian Kelly said Friday that Mauk is expected to have his final appeal hearing via teleconference possibly Tuesday and no later than Thursday.

Mauk’s request for a medical hardship waiver that would provide him a sixth year to complete his four years of eligibility was turned down by the NCAA on April 30 for the second time in 21/2 months. The NCAA said in that ruling that Mauk lacked contemporaneous documentation from his former school, Wake Forest, to support his claim that an injury prevented him from competing during his freshman year in 2003.

This time, Mauk and UC will present their case to a five-person Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee armed with a precedent they believe closely mirrors Mauk’s situation.

If Mauk is granted the extra year of eligibility, it will make a huge difference in UC’s prospects for this football season. Mauk passed for 3,121 yards and a school-record 31 touchdowns last year.

“It puts us in a position where, from an offensive standpoint, we return arguably the best quarterback in the (Big East),” Kelly said, “the most productive. And we return a veteran defense. It puts us in a position to win a championship. There’s no question.”

  102. Garret June 24, 2008 10:50 am

Colorado and other Big 12 schools have some huge tackles on the OL!

“Tall people have longer legs, you’re faster and quicker off the edge, helping you be able to pass block,” Miller said. “And there’s a little bit of a psychological point to it. The bigger the person, others generally feel smaller, and maybe not as strong toward your opponent.”

CU lists Solder at 6-foot-8 and Miller at 6-7 entering fall camp. Solder said he’s 6-9, and, incidentally, is up to 294 pounds. Solder, who started at left tackle in the spring game, doubts he’ll get much taller. But he admits he thinks he’s still growing.

In the current Big 12, only Texas’ projected tandem of Adam Ulatoski and Kyle Hix, 6-8 and 6-7, respectively, matches CU’s stature.

The Oklahoma and Texas Tech tackle duos are an inch behind.

  103. (Jesse) James June 24, 2008 10:50 am

Who knew that Terry Bradshaw took steroids when he played for the Steelers?

Apparently, Bradshaw went on Dan Patrick’s radio show Thursday and admitted to using steroids to help “heal quicker” in the 1970s.

“My use of steroids from a doctor was to speed up injuries…and thought nothing of it. It was to speed up the healing process, that was it. It wasn’t to get bigger and faster.”

  106. Garret June 24, 2008 10:54 am

I’ve been reading about the All Poly Camp for years and today’s Advertiser had a nice article (via USA Today) about it. Pretty cool that Mel Purcell was one of the people helping out there.

Last year, 49 of about 90 seniors at the camp — which got its name because so many of the camp’s original coaches and counselors were of Polynesian ancestry — signed to play in college. Among those signees were some of the top players from Hawai’i and American Samoa.

Not only has the All Poly Camp — founded by Bountiful High assistant coach Alema Te’o — grown in numbers, it has grown in stature. This year, more than 300 high school players attended the camp, which ended Saturday.

Purcell remembers attending a Joe Salavea camp when he was in high school.

“I dreamt of being in this position,” Purcell said. “I’m just trying to give a little back to the kids and show them the road I took.”

KK = Krazy Karaoke? I don’t think I’ve ever been there.

  108. Garret June 24, 2008 10:55 am

Amazing that Manti Te’o was named the top LB at the camp for *4* straight years. That means that he was the top LB at the camp before he even started high school!

Manti Te’o, Alema Te’o’s nephew, attended the camp for the fifth time and was named the camp’s top linebacker for the fourth consecutive year.

A senior at Punahou School, Te’o, 6-feet-2, 230 pounds, is the No. 1 inside linebacker and No. 7 player overall in the country, according to Rivals.com.

“It brings a different taste to see who is currently in the NFL and doing what you want to do,” said Te’o, who is considering several colleges, including Brigham Young, Colorado, Notre Dame, Southern California, Stanford and UCLA.

“It’s great motivation for me and the other athletes to see someone who is living their dream. It makes your dream of playing in the NFL a lot closer. It makes it seem like it is possible. He did it. Why can’t you?”

  109. Garret June 24, 2008 11:00 am

I saw the bowling scores that ST listed in the last blog. We actually discovered a bowling alley right near the Fremont casino. The cool thing was that it was just $1 per game at the time we showed up (Monday/Tuesday 11am until 2pm) instead of the regular $3 or $5 per game. So, we had Faith and Mika try to bowl since they had the ramps that kids can use to push the bowling ball on.

Faith got an 87 and Mika got an 84 in their games, and they had a lot of fun. Lori and I just watched and cheered them on. We have to add that to our activities now when we go to Vegas, plus there are a number of bowling alleys in San Diego that we might go to as a family now.

Maybe we could have a SoCal Tsaiko bowling gathering sometime? I know that Rich would be a total ringer, but maybe we’ll get some type of handicap.

g you no need double just need to show up on time and stop making like YMCA at the kvillage establishments

haaa, “kvillage”??!! eh no mix me up with Stretch.

for what its worth, i DIDN’T plan on showing up late to Genji’s and it was just a little late, but apparently late enough to miss the poke and steak? either that or i did eat it but now need a double shot??!! lol

anyways, it was a LAST minute diversion to ONE establishment – it was business, not YMCA.

but i’d better not go too early on July 10th, if i go thru the buffet line twice…………….security!

  156. g-nalo June 24, 2008 2:19 pm

    koakane,

you crack me up….i only work 1/2 a day…12 hours, haha. it’s called multi tasking, sort of like a CC for us. you know, select the food, cook the food, have a conversation, order a beverage, fight for grill space (DPK?), talk some more, get more food, cook again, eat, drink, talk some more….and breathe every now and then, haha.

das alright, da bottom line is dis…………….what was i talking about?

  169. Stretch June 24, 2008 2:43 pm

Pilares’ moped would look a whole lot better if he had a local style UA logo on it. One of these days….

  170. gigi-hawaii © June 24, 2008 2:43 pm

Koakane, it was so funny. At Gengi, I kept calling LTUHF Koakane. He introduced me to his wife Lorna. Then, I said that I saw his comment on my blog regarding wasabi.

He said he hadn’t seen my blog recently.

Then, it dawned on me that LTUHF was NOT Koakane! I asked him to point you out to me.

Man, Koakane and LTUHF look so much alike. UNBELIEVABLE!

I had my first Vespa in NYC at the ’64 world’s fair. I used to ride from Far Rockaway Beach to Flushing, then to my night job as a Page on the Tonight show. I don’t even think they had helmets then.
First car was a ’36 Pontiac Touring Sedan that I rescued from a junk yard as a Freshman in College. Worked great, Knew it’s way home when I was not able to remember. I still have a picture of it right next to me on the wall and still wonder if it is still among the living 50 yrs later. Bought it for $65. and Sold it as a Senior for $100.
Chicks loved me teaching them how to drive a stick shift!
It went on many road trips to Football Away games in So Cal and Bay Area.

Gigi…wreck eats worms…just like most of us fishermen….especially since worms don’t like salt water too much…we rather just eat them and use other forms of rubish for bait like tako and puhi and shrimp and aku belly….

Do you like to see the poor fish thrashing on the sand, gasping for its life? Cruel sport.

  202. prideperiod June 24, 2008 3:35 pm

Speaking of Golf. I’ve got to agree with Whitey, who mentioned this weekend that Michelle Wie needs to stop making excuses, and needs to start fufilling her vast potential. A good start would be to stop listening to all the experts who have been fiddling with her game, and go back to her original coach when she was a young girl. Get back to the basics. She is very talented, but may need to simply get back to the basic fundamentals. Her game will come around if she just gets back to the basics.

  203. Stretch June 24, 2008 3:36 pm

    Hi pride

You may be anonymous, but can’t keep that beautiful voice of yours in the dark. Thoroughly enjoyed your singing last week…can’t wait to do it again.

  210. gigi-hawaii © June 24, 2008 3:47 pm

I used to think Wie was better than Morgan Pressel. But, Pressel has already won a tournament and is the youngest to do so.

    Poor Michelle.

  211. prideperiod June 24, 2008 3:49 pm

I am a big fan of Michelle Wie. My point is that I think that some people jumped on Whitey for being to critical. I think that was unfair. I believe that Whitey is also a Wie fan. However, Whitey was just trying to point out that she needs to stop making excuses and start performing. Don’t say that you’re driving the ball well off the tee but yet the numbers tell us you’re only hitting 30% of the fairways and 30% of the greens. She will never make it if she accepts those numbers. She is much better than that. She is simply disorganized. That’s why I believe that she needs to go back to the basics, where she learned the basics, and get organized again.

I agree with all of you that Michelle needs to get back to basics. She has way more potential than she has shown since all the coaching changes. I think that her “handlers” need to get out of the way and let her be the golfer that she is.

Interesting discussion about how conference are more likely to expand to 12 for all BCS conferences than go to 16 teams per superconference like the Orlando Sentinel has been writing about. UH got shortchanged in this discussion.

First let’s discuss Notre Dame. The Irish will never join a conference unless it is mandated by Congress (or God). They make too much money – even when awful – for them to join a conference, so the Irish remain independent.

But what the Big 10 could do is add Cincinnati. The Bearcats have a great coach in Brian Kelly and this would enable the Big 10 to have 12 teams and hopefully prevent a team from winning the league without having played the best teams in the conference.

The Pac 10 could add any number of schools should they choose. BYU, Boise State, Fresno State or UNLV would be good choices, but you could only choose two and I would take BYU and UNLV. Both have the ability to compete with the giants of the Pac-10 after a few years of recruiting.

This would mean that five out of the six BCS conferences would have 12 teams and the NCAA could mandate that during a 12-game season you must play nine conference games (like the Pac 10 already does).

  235. Rob25 June 24, 2008 5:25 pm

Dennis Halloran – I just wanted to skip back a minute to the ’64 World’s Fair. Like you, I was also very lucky to have attended what I still think is the best Fair I have ever been to!

My most impressive impression was of the big corporation pavillions. The Ford Motor Company had one of the most impressive displays. They took all of their brand new 1965 models and made sure they used only the convertables. That was your fair ride thru their exhibit!

The pavillons built on what was once all in landfill called Flushing Meadows, were endless, too many to count!

The problem with Call the ____ Show at the Hukilau is the sound or lack thereof. The first time i went during the baseball season I sat towards the back and had not a clue as to what was being said at the front of the room. The next time I brought the radio along and was able to hear what was being said even though I still couldn’t see very well. It’s not a good setup such as the ones at The Willows and even Lulu’s.

We’d like to attend and I’m willing to secure a table around 5 pm towards the front – I assume that the show is at 6 pm. For how many all totaled?

If any of you ever need to use a boat to go fishing, give us a call. We have a small boat – certainly not safe for anything deep water, but it is for channels and nearshore waters.

KEKOA: Your comment last night about military bowling alleys – I agree that the military base bowling alleys will be around for a long time, but most civilian folks do not have access to them. Obviously, if there’s a club established and/or a league to play in, then that’s something else, but for the recreational bowler who wants to go bowling eight or ten times a year, the impending demise of the sport in the civilian community is really depressing.

Finally, What do the following professional athletes both active & retired have in common: Tony Gonzalez, Pat Neshek, Desmond Howard, Ricky Williams, D’Marco Farr, Prince Fielder and Salim Stoudamire. First person to come up with the correct answer will receive a dinner for two at The India Cafe on Kapahulu Avenue. Deadline 5 am: Wednesday, June 25.

Off to a meeting – am running late, but it’s only a mile away.

Aloha Pauoa Boy ~ BarryM emailed me a note to pass on to everybody. His son, Abe is now officially a full-fledged USC Trojan as of 10 AM yesterday!

Before he left, I briefed him on staying in touch with his Tsaiko Ohana. He will be in contact with you and the other Lo Cal Crazies once he gets settled in. (Barry, No worry, I did not give out his ph.#).

It is good for Jordon that this information wasn’t public before the draft.

Lions rookie Jordon Dizon was arrested April 20 on suspicion of drunk driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and failure to provide insurance, the Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera newspaper reported on its Web site late Monday night.

Dizon was arrested six days before the Detroit Lions drafted him in the second round of the NFL draft.

The arrest received no media attention.

It’s unlikely that Dizon would warrant a suspension from the NFL based on a violation of the personal-conduct code since the arrest occurred before being drafted.

“Jordon is an outstanding football player, person and citizen,” Dizon’s attorney, Peter Schaffer, told the paper. “I think that over time he will continue to demonstrate that to all his fans in both Michigan and Colorado.”

  260. tom mui June 24, 2008 7:38 pm

KEKOA: I missed you in the crowd. I guess i was at the Spanish Pavilion eating at the Jockey Club.

Of course the ’64 World’s Fair was pretty crowded! 🙂

  261. Garret June 24, 2008 7:39 pm

This article says that Jordon could be suspended by the NFL. They pointed out that a player was suspended in a similar situation 2 years ago.

It’s unclear whether the Lions knew that Dizon had been arrested. Given their history, we’ll assume that they did not.

But assumptions are often wrong. The Free Press, for example, assumes that Dizon won’t be subject to any punishment from the NFL because the arrest occurred before he was drafted. That’s not accurate, as Bengals defensive end Frostee Rucker learned a year ago, when he was disciplined after pleading guilty to a charge that predated the 2006 draft.

  264. Garret June 24, 2008 7:40 pm

This mentions a former UH football player so I guess it is relevant.

A judge has given former Academy of the Pacific athletic director Brad Kitsu a chance to keep his record clean of drug charges.

Circuit Judge Richard Pollack says Kitsu has to stay out of legal trouble for five years and perform 150 hours of community service to have his plea of guilty to possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia erased.

Pollack says Kitsu has been a positive influence on the community and deserves a chance to teach or coach again.

Authorities arrested Kitsu and former University of Hawaii football player Wayne Roe Junior after tracing a package of marijuana mailed from the mainland to Kitsu’s apartment last year.

Discussion of the Heisman candidates brings up Colt and the “s” word again.

Daniel, who finished fourth in the voting, is back for another try. Both Daniel and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell face the same obstacle; they must get by Oklahoma or Texas and win the Big 12 championship. Harrell, who has thrown for more than 10,000 yards in the past two years, is also saddled with the stigma that he is a product of the system. Colt Brennan of Hawaii fought that last year when he finished third in the voting.

  267. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER June 24, 2008 7:47 pm

Auwe for Jordon. But he manned up and treated the officer with respect.

  269. Garret June 24, 2008 7:49 pm

Article about potential BCS Buster teams this season went out of its way to take a dig at UH.

A good “BCS buster” team? Ahhhhh, there we go. We always need one of those. Can’t let the six “BCS automatic qualifier” conferences and Notre Dame have all the fun, right?

We thought we had something in Hawaii last season, but the Warriors were exposed as pretenders by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Expect them to fade back into the middle of the WAC pack after quarterback Colt Brennan left for the pros and coach June Jones bolted for Southern Methodist.

We need another team like Boise State in 2006. Or better yet, the 2004 Utah Utes.

There are a few other teams with legitimate BCS-busting aspirations, but each have major questions.

    # Boise State – Is Ian Johnson still in college? Good grief, I think he not only played in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, he played in the 1994 I-AA playoffs against Marshall, as well.

The concern here is the Broncos are breaking in a new quarterback to replace Tyler Tharp, not to mention the tight end and four starters on the offensive line. But Johnson headlines a deep backfield and the wide receiving corps is even deeper, with Fiesta Bowl hero Vinny Perretta back from injury. (He threw the overtime touchdown pass against Oklahoma.)

The Broncos travel to Southern Mississippi, but get Hawaii and Fresno State at home. Big, big game: Sept. 20 at Oregon.

  270. Pauoa Boy June 24, 2008 7:54 pm

It’s funny how people get so involved with your personal business when you become a professional athlete, celebrity and the such. Always looking to exploit negative things that can be found about a person and making it out to be bigger than it really is. Reminds of Colt Brennan and how everyone keeps holding that CU incident over his head. Jordon Dizon will obviously take care of his mistake and move on, but garrans some idiot is going to blow it up and probably say he has a character issue cause he didn’t tell no one before the draft about the incident…yada, yada, yada…

  274. Kekoa June 24, 2008 7:58 pm

W/Doc – You are correct, but since we had already established the Shafter Bowling Alley as another resource for the ‘Tsaiko Ohana’ then I was merely letting the others know that particular lane will still be available for our use long after the demise of the civilian centers.

I introduced Midori7 to the manager of those lanes about 2 months ago, she knows how to initiate an outing pretty much anytime she wants. All she needs is an ID card holder, and we have a few retirees, me included and even a Tsaikette who is eligible
So when Pali finally closes it’s doors, we have back up.

Yes it is a shame that the county chooses to support Golf courses rather bowling centers, but that’s there business until a push from the public supports change. Meanwhile the erosion of these centers cause local people to lose a great recreational sport.

STRETCH, hubby bought 30 Titleist RECYCLED golf balls for $23 from Kmart. What did the company do to the balls to make them RECYCLED? Will it affect our performance in any way?

Recycled = Used A lot of “recycled” balls are picked up from ponds in the golf courses and re-sold. Most are in pretty good condition and will not affect your performance in any way.

  278. Pauoa Boy June 24, 2008 8:17 pm

310lbs…on a 6’0″-6’1″ frame that’s a scary sight for a RB to see that mass coming to destroy you.

I can see Quentin Beaver destroying guys this year, any word on how he’s been progressing ST. Would love to see him on the field this year laying out some OLineman and crushing RB’s and QB’s all day!

Garret – That “s” word kills me. I like what Colt Brennan said in one of his interviews with ESPN when asked the system question.

Colt Brennan: Obviously the Run & Shoot is designed to put up big numbers for a quarterback so when I come out of that system you gotta be able to take on the criticism. Nobody takes into account that my efficiency, my completion percentage and my touchdown to interception ratio are stats that no Run & Shoot quarterback has ever came close to having before. I’ve had a lot of success in the system but not just touchdowns and yards, it’s been efficiency and wins and I think that’s what really makes a quarterback stand out. I really think that if people watch the film, watch me scramble, watch me run around and make plays, they see there really isn’t a lot of system in the way I play. I’ve played football everywhere from Colorado to Boston to California to Hawaii and I’ve been in every single system out there and I’ve had success in every one of them so if people really do their homework they know that I’ve been in different systems and had success in different systems.

Lafaele might have a good chance to get picked up by the Bills. There DT’s aren’t necessarily deep. They picked up Marcus Stroud from Jacksonville and Spencer Johnson from Minnesota. The only starter back from last year is Kyle Williams and the only other DT who had significant playing time was John McCargo. Hope he makes it…

You two have been to many restaurants, how many of them were you able to pay $20 total that includes food, drinks, and tip. We are trying to keep things affordable for everyone to allow more people to come out. We could go with high class food with tons to eat but that will mean almost double in cost. Keep in mind the purpose of this party, to get together and have a good time, talk story.

  292. Stretch June 24, 2008 9:12 pm

If not, its Fedex. Dell is obnoxious, once we determined they couldn’t get it here before Abe’s departure to LA, they would not allow us to reroute it even to my Dad’s house, near Rich’s (and it obviously would have been cheaper NOT to send it here via 2nd Day Air). Have a safe trip Rich, and best wishes to your good lady.

I voted for Colt, even though JJ was well…. (nothing left to say that hasn’t been said)…

But I had to turn away from being suckered into the hate speeches following the polls.

The internet never fails to amaze me with the amount of ignorance out there.

gigi- where else can you go, walk into a virtual “room” full of strangers and make immediate friends? I consider this “room” a home. We even act like a family here! The best part is that we become friends first, based on our mutual support for the Warriors and the aloha we carry in our hearts. This friendship is not based on the superficial qualities that permeate most “friendships” so by the time we meet face to face, those things like clothes, cars, jobs, education, race, religion, politics, address, etc. even last names are not that important.

    But that’s just me 😆

  340. Pauoa Boy June 24, 2008 9:56 pm

Well gotta hele, wifey having hard time put the keikis to bed, dayum keeds! Check you Charactahs manyanaz … Shakaz…

  341. Jason June 24, 2008 9:58 pm

The other week, I went to a funeral. I guess he was my grand-uncle — my Grandpa’s sister’s husband. I only met him once, when he came to my Dad’s funeral three years back. But even though I knew nobody there except my aunt and uncle, I still took the time to talk story with these family members. And I found that although I didn’t know them, they knew me, and that made things easier.

What I’m trying to say is this: whether your Mr. gigi or some lurker reading this, don’t feel like an outsider. This is an extended family, with people you see all the time and people you only see at funerals (or other grand events). If you don’t know anybody, make friends. We’re all adults here, and even though we are of different ages and come from different backgrounds, we share different beliefs and faiths and philosophies, we have gone through different experiences in life, both good and bad — still, we’re able to come together and talk story, whether it’s on the blog or in person. So no be shy, just be one of the guys or gals. I’m sure everyone remembers how laid-back I was at the first blog bash at Murphy’s, and look how I and so many others have grown through these relationships. We could have Rich and Margo write a script, and even Hollywood wouldn’t believe that it’s based off our story. So don’t be an outsider — cause it’s not through any effort of ours. If you’re an outsider, then it’s of your own doing, cause the Tsaikos welcome everyone with open arms. Except for trolls, of course! 😉

  343. Jason June 24, 2008 10:02 pm

Pauoa Boy: Man, you call everybody uncle and aunty. I bet you’re around my older sister’s age; that’s close enough. So do what I do — call them grandma and grandpa. 😀

Da braddah is more Samoan in spirit and culture dan anything. No be fooled by what you think you see.

George Carlin ref? hmmm… not on purpose. Rich is anoddah spe-shul one – full of aloha – far from haole. (as in ha- aole)

Ya know, I was yakkin’ on the phone to my buddies, prideperiod and bulla, over the last couple of days and I shared this realization with them, which I was only able to define to myself at Genji’s last week. To be able to walk into a room of 50 people and feel so close to them ALL is truly a unique experience. To have such close and constant friendship with such a diverse group which features folks of all ages, races and social strati can only be possible on a blog like this. To be able to create and maintain so many close friendships would be very difficult in the real world, this place allows and enables this. Meanwhile we keep one corner of our town focused on UH Football, especially during the season. I enjoy and savor all the folks here and blessed by their friendships. Participation in this blog has truly been a life altering experience for the better, and I am so glad to have been a part of this.

When I last saw David at Genji’s, he was commenting that he needed a nic to blog under because he wanted to join in. I couldn’t think of a nic for him, I wished I could
have, but mostly I was happy to see that he was interested. To David and all the lukers out there, all I can say is jump in and engage and you are almost certain to have a great time. Nothing compares. 🙂

    Good evening Tsaikos?

Off-topic but sports related. Anybody catch Real Sports on HBO tonight? The last story made us laugh and possibly make all the male Tsaikos jealous. 😀

Thoroughbred named Tigercat. Had short and unspectactular racing career in the 80s. Owners put him out to stud. First one, they got $20K, then his progeny started winning. Price at his peak for each foal he sired was $500K. He was studded TWICE A DAY during breeding season and took him only about 15 secs to do the deed. To get the fillies in the mood, they employed “teaser” horses. Poor things had to do all the work but got shut out. Tigercat retired a couple of years ago. Sired about 1400 offspring. Made over $25M for his owners. 😯

Well, have a good evening. Time for bed. Sweet dreams. hehehe

nothing wrong with being haole, though. I was happy that hubby used chopsticks in japan… especially since he has arthritis in his hands.

ah well, maybe a trip to kauai and the golf tournament will make him feel more accepted by “virtual” strangers.

Barry is haole like hubby, so he know all about steaks and how much he loves em.

Sorry Gigi, I must say, Barry is not like hubby at all. Barry understands and appreciates our Polynesian culture and has embraced it fully with his family. He knows how to openly share what he owns and covets nothing.

He is like a brother to all of us, and in fact gave me something just the other day that he noticed I thought was unique. No hesitation, just here…take it, it’s yours!

All we hear from you is “Hubby says we have to leave at a certain time.” “Hubby says we have to arrive before a certain time.” “Hubby says this…Hubby says that.”

When will we ever hear, “I told Hubby I want to arrive early and stay late.” Be honest…Would he balk at that demand?

Lighten up David, Gigi says you are Haole, but you don’t have to act like one. Come join us and talk story. Tell us about your hopes and dreams and unload that sports drawer that is full of opinions on Warrior Football. That’s what this blog is really all about, we just like to take the fun way around the block to get to the good part!

    Peace Out!
