Basketball recruiting update

Here’s info from our basketball writer, Dayton Morinaga:

The University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team is no longer in the running
for two recruits.
• Rafael Crescencio, an athletic 6-foot-9 forward at Arizona Western College,
made a commitment to play for the University of San Diego. Crescencio had narrowed his choices to UH and USD. He averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Arizona Western this past season.
• Kevin Menner, a high-scoring 6-5 forward at Saddleback (Calif.) College, is no longer being recruited by Hawai’i. He averaged 19.3 and 7.0 rebounds per game this past season.
The UH coaches are now looking at other possibilities, and still want to
fill two more scholarships before May 20.

Defensive end Victor Clore is a candidate for the last remaining scholarship. He works nights as a bouncer, sometimes getting only 2 hours of sleep before heaing to UH for practice or workouts. He supports himself through that job and financial aid. “You can’t feed yourself on hopes and dreams,” Clore said.

The WAC Football Media Preview is July 28-29 in Salt Lake City. UH is allowed to bring up to two players. John Estes will be one. Any suggestions for the other? Greg Alexander? Fetaiagogo Fonoti? Brashton Satele or Malcolm Lane?

  4. Garret April 24, 2009 8:34 am

I was going to post this article on David Veikune on the old blog when I saw the new one was up.

ESPN.com has the 6-foot-3 260-pounder going as high as the 2nd round.

But as far as what position, that part is still up in the air.

“During the Senior Bowl, they were calling me a ‘tweener’ and said I could play linebacker or defensive end,” he said. “That’s why a lot of my personal workouts have been all linebacker stuff because they’ve seen me and they know I can play defensive end already, they just want to see if i can drop into coverage and stuff like that.”

  5. Garret April 24, 2009 8:36 am

This Colorado paper suggests Denver take Veikune in the 3rd round. Denver is switching to a 3-4 and needs outside LBs to rush the passer, and they have 2 draft picks in the 3rd round, so this is a definite possibility.

Third Round: 79th and 84th overall selections

Assuming they have filled the need at nose tackle, at least one of these two selections should be used on a hybrid DE/OLB. Expect Denver to try to stockpile as many pass rushers as it can to help smooth the transition to the 3-4. Hawaii’s David Veikune could fit well here, or Denver could look to make Texas Tech’s Brandon Williams, a defensive end in college, into an oversized linebacker.

  6. Pride. April 24, 2009 8:37 am

Most of the mock drafts only show Veikune getting drafted out of the University of Hawaii.

  7. Garret April 24, 2009 8:37 am

Until this year, Samson had the most interviews scheduled with NFL teams at the combine for any of Leo Goeas’ clients.

Goeas says he wouldn’t be surprised if his client went late in the first round and would be shocked if Levitre was still available after two rounds.

“He did what I expected he was capable of at the NFL Combine,” Goeas said. “What did surprise me at the combine — I didn’t think he would have 12 scheduled interviews. I thought he might be in the five-to-six range. The most my company has ever had for one player is three, and he was a second rounder [current Raiders center Samson Satele].”

    Veikune is a beast.

  10. Garret April 24, 2009 8:41 am

I like what NMSU is adding to their helmet. I’ve tested some stuff at White Sands and the people there deserve this honor.

Coach Dwayne Walker, NMSU’s new football coach, said his new-look Aggie team will include the insignia of the 2nd Engineer Battalion on all players’ helmets. The insignias will be on the helmets when NMSU begins the 2009 season on Sept. 5 against the University of Idaho, at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

“In March, the Aggies coaching staff, along with Mr. David Holly, visited the 2nd Engineer Battalion at White Sands,” Walker said. “We were moved by the hospitality shown to us and inspired by their discipline and commitment. Placing the 2nd Engineer Battalion’s insignia is just our way of recognizing and showing our appreciation to these brave gentlemen.”

Walker also reciprocated by inviting battalion commanders and soldiers to Aggie football practice on Tuesday. There, the players presented Lt. Col. Chris Benson, commander of the 2nd Engineer Battalion, with a NMSU flag that was signed by every Aggie player.

“I don’t know of any other squadron, company, battalion or division in the Army that has their insignia on a college football helmet,” said Capt. Richard Knox, commander of the battalion’s 573rd Clearance Company. “The flag they gave us will be put on display in a prominent area of our headquarters. When we are deployed, we intend to take the flag with us. That’s how much that flag means to us.”

“This seemingly small gesture is really a big deal,” Marlin said. “These young soldiers have signed up for a pretty tough job. When they are training or they are deployed, how great it will be for them and their families to know that the folks back home at NMSU and in Las Cruces are thinking about them.”

If you click on my name, you will see a 2010 mock NFL draft that shows John Estes going in the fourth round and Blaze Soares going in the sixth round. We Hawaii fans are simply crossing our fingers hoping that Blaze will simply be able to play in 2009 much less excel.

  12. Garret April 24, 2009 8:44 am

David Veikune deserves all of the attention he’s getting from the NFL and the media. I’ll miss seeing his relentless effort on behalf of the Warriors…but he’ll do well in the NFL and UH has recruited a lot of candidates for DE that I’m sure are hungry for the playing time.

  13. Garret April 24, 2009 8:46 am

    Pride,

If Blaze is healthy all season, I think he’ll do a great job for the Warriors and go higher than the 6th round. However, that is a big if.

The estimate for John Estes seems reasonable. That is fairly high for a center in the draft, but Estes has done very well for the Warriors. If the OL does its job this year, his draft stock will rise.

  14. Pride. April 24, 2009 8:46 am

Tsai, am I mistaken by saying that John Fonoti is a beast also? I watch him play and I think beast, but then I don’t see any post-season honors, or pre-season hype. I am not an expert and my eyes are no longer as sharp as they used to be. I’m wondering if perhaps I am not seeing things as they really are.

wat about baba rego? he works hard and is getting a civil engineering degree too!

  16. Garret April 24, 2009 8:51 am

Wisconsin violated the quiet period for recruiting this past year. One of the recruits that they visited against the rules may play against the Warriors this season because the NCAA has decided to allow the player to play for Wisconsin despite the violation.

So, the penalty for violating the quiet period is an “admonishment” to the coach. No penalty to the school, no loss of the recruit, nothing! You can bet that those coaches were visiting with high-priority recruits…and one of them will probably play at Aloha Stadium this year.

This recruit got a home visit from Wisconsin’s recruiting coordinator–you think he didn’t know it was a quiet period? Their recruiting coordinator?

Three Wisconsin assistant football coaches have been admonished for violating NCAA rules by visiting prospects during an off-limits recruiting period, according to records released Friday.

The coaches – defensive coordinator Dave Doeren, recruiting coordinator Randall McCray and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander – made the Jan. 4 trips during a “quiet period” in which no recruiting visits to players can be made.

Alexander visited a Wisconsin-bound recruit at his home in Cincinnati.

In reporting the violations, the university declared the recruit from Cincinnati ineligible but asked the NCAA to reinstate him. The university learned Thursday the recruit had been reinstated – and his family was surprised to find out there had been a problem, Sweeney said.

  17. Dirty Commish April 24, 2009 8:55 am

Dirty Commish thinks Veikune could be a hellraiser as an OLB in a 3-4, much like Demarcus Ware of the Cowboys. Dirty Commish was hoping Travis Laboy would have the same kind of success but that injury demon keeps popping its ugly head.

When teams switch to a nickel with 4 down linemen Veikune can also line up as DE again and go QB hunting.

Dirty Commish also highly recommends “Eastbound and Down” on HBO. Quite possibly the BEST sports related show on TV. Ever.

Kenny Powers also has a Twitter. Can’t put the link here because it has a naughty word in it. But Google: “kenny powers twitter feed” and try not to laugh out loud. Very NSFW language. So be warned.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2009 8:55 am

  19. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2009 8:56 am

It’s like election night. I love all of the analysis.
Only question is: where was that during the season?

  20. Garret April 24, 2009 8:57 am

    Pride,

I think that John Fonoti is a beast also, but the NFL is focused on Veikune now. He’ll get recognition and attention focused on him next year, since they will need to evaluate him then for the draft.

  21. jeezy April 24, 2009 8:57 am

interesting about Menner. I wonder if someone better has fallen under the radar and the coaches are tired of Menner’s delays to commit to us. I hope we have a stud to bring in. I dont think Crecencio was a big loss

So Nash pisked up two guards, and we have two more schollies to spare. What do the expert Tsai-kos believe should be done with the last two scholarships. What do we need? One more scorer. A long range shooter? A big body? A hybrid? What do you think?

  28. Dirty Commish April 24, 2009 9:10 am

ST: Dirty Commish misses SportsNight. It was a very witty, sharp and well written show. Felicity Huffman AND William H. Macy. How could it go wrong? Another example of ignorance and shortsightedness by TV Executives that somehow allow “The Hills” to stay on the air.

Dirty Commish can’t get pumped up for draft day this year since beloved Cowboys do not have a first round pick. But that might not be a bad thing since Dirty Commish doesn’t think they have a glaring need at any particular spot for a pricey 1st rounder.

  29. rog April 24, 2009 9:13 am

Still think the best thing for the basketball program is for Nash to fail this year so we can bring in someone new.

depends, as long as nash implements riley wallace’s flex offense, past success revolved around shooting the ball. savovich, a smith, english, mcintyre, kuebler, ruffin, … the flex offense runs into problems with high pressure defense that anticipate where the ball will go, and if nash’s team cannot take care of the ball handling and passing, they will be exploited into many turnovers, esp. with the wrong personnel touching the basketball. nash only knows this offense so i dont expect him to change much. shooters, shooters, shooters, that is what nash should recruit, black or white, big or small, skinny or fat, fast or slow, main thing is that they can light it up from the outside, that is my hope.

  40. PONO April 24, 2009 9:37 am

Regarding Bball recruits UH needs a real shooting guard and the last scholie should go to the best player regardless of position that they can land. I think a healthy Balocka, Amis and Adams can be effective guarding the post and can contribute some scoring punch. We know what we are getting out of Flemings and the two PGs look like scorers so we just need someone to set up at the 2 guard.

Man, too bad about those hopeful recruits. However u don’t know how they would turn out if you have not seen them, that’s their loss they didn’t want to be a Warrior. Whomever the coaches are eyeing now could be even better!!!

My suggestion for WAC football media day, since Estes is going, send Alexander too. These two players are going to make or break this season, i think. Defense looks like there are some very good playmakers out there.

    Can’t wait!!!!

Inoke should go to the WC Football media if we want ATTENTION. Lotsa questions will be asked, lotsa curiosity about his position change.

If we want to be mysterious and low key but personable, with one O and one D, send Estes with Rocky Savaiigaea.

    HiHo!

Dirty Commish votes for Brashton Satele as the other rep. I have a feeling he’s gonna be a major player in this defense and I want the other schools to know exactly who laid out their QB.

Brashton “Boom Boom” Satele in the house!

  56. A-House April 24, 2009 10:31 am

If I am wrong, and many times I am, I have not seen any UH coach, past and present, asking everyone to help out in identifying high school or JC athletes who may contribute to UH sports. I see nothing wrong with this position. Is there a NCAA rule against this?

Being where we are located and in the conferences we belong to makes it tougher to find recruits and this will continue until UH becomes so well known that athletes will be contacting UH for the opportunity to play. I know that football players have and continue to send tapes for coaches to review. U-tube is very popular for recruits.

  57. madeinhawaii April 24, 2009 10:32 am

I kind of would like to see Inoke go to the WAC Football Media Preview. Let them (all the other WAC teams) worry about the “Noke” and it’s options. Build it up.. sell it… and decide what to do with it come game time.

  64. Ralph April 24, 2009 10:56 am

UH needs outside shooters who can create space to get the shot off to score. Flemings doesn’t have an outside shot, totally inconsistent. he needs more strength to play the 4 spot, gets knock around a lot in the paint. UH needs a big body post at the 5 spot, we need rebounds and defense…a taller guard for the 2 spot who is a good shooter from the outside or another power forward.

  65. madeinhawaii April 24, 2009 10:56 am

Speaking of “bad mouthing the SID”, there seems to be very little “marketing” for the scrimmage tomorrow or am I not reading the sports pages correctly.

Is this part of his territory? or, does this fall only to Coach Mack and his staff? Only mention on TV is during the sports segment during the news cast.

Wonder what the turn out will be this year compared to last year?

Also, except for Ferd’s article this morning, I was not fully aware that UH was hosting 3 WAC tournaments in April and May. I knew about baseball, but not for tennis and the water polo.

    What’s up with dat?

tough pick betw Fonoti and Inoke.
I like John cuz he was a high value assest that had a brilliant true-frosh year that many compared to Niko Noga.
John stumbled, fell academically, stayed out a year, came back, was frustrated with injury, rebounded, put-it-all together and now is peaking in his senior year.
Classic example of peaks n valleys, but glued together with resilience and talent.

Inoke is an example of outstanding citizenship and has been a quintessential role-model–church missionary, faithful back-up, consumate team player, unselfish, community-participant and a friend always available to teammates for fellowship.

dean wilson stands at 2 over total and projected cut is 1 under.

  80. Jason April 24, 2009 12:38 pm

A-House: On the other hand, the past few Thursday editions of Ka Leo have had prominent coverage of those sporting events. This week was tennis, last week was water polo.

My vote is for Fonoti, so we can have a player from both sides of the ball. I’d like ‘Inoke too, but it makes sense to market Estes, as he’s a legit All-America guy.

Coach Dwane Walker, NMSU’s newly installed head coach has the marking of a great leader and career–he exudes with the right stuff and a wonderful man to swap-talk.
Dont forget, Walker was hired by McKinley Boston, NMSAD.

Boston is also on the rise and a brilliant administrator who thinks on-the-run.
He built the aggies basketball program in a wink by hiring Reggie Theus.
He has down-sized the aggies budget by 10% without sapping it substantively.

Walker is a D specialist known for his recruiting of NFL-type DBs.
We better be ready for NMSU this year–these aggies may be tougher than most think–even at our house.

You guys will all probably hate juichiro but it must be said…..Everyone says Blaze this and that but…The guy has yet to start a whole season…He’s made key plays in the past and has great potential and hits like at animal but no consistency like Solly and Adam. So I don’t know about him getting drafted. Especially w/ Sol and Adam not getting much love from the bowl/nfl invitation commitees….I mean common…Is there even enough games played for a Blaze highlight film. He might have watched more that he played in. I hope he and the defense prove me wrong but……Fo Real

    Jason:

That’s great that Kaleo is shaking da bushes to let students know that these events are occurring on campus as we speak.

BUT, what about the “general public” where most of the $$$ comes from? How many “locals” played water polo on the West Coast and may want to see their alma marter get their asses kicked by UH? How strong is the interest in tennis on Oahu?

It would be outstanding if UH can “sell-out” Murakimi Stadiuim for the WAC palyoff – shades of days gone by when we yelled out guts out and cheered on the Bows!!!!!!!

  94. warriorfanny2 April 24, 2009 1:12 pm

Stretch – You coming to the t-gate?

  101. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2009 2:10 pm

I think UH sometimes forgets how good it has it.
Fans, media generate the coverage for football. UH doesn’t have to do anything. The real work comes when you don’t have a well-known sport. That’s where UH needs to get its coaches on radio stations and calling reporters.

  102. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2009 2:12 pm

After football practices, reporters give interview requests to UH sports media relation people. They’re often like, whoa, not too many today, OK?
Now look at San Jose State, Idaho, SMU. They’re begging for reporters to write any story.

  103. Stephen Tsai April 24, 2009 2:13 pm

So, yeah, if people don’t know about tennis championships, then UH isn’t doing its job.

Is this part of his territory? or, does this fall only to Coach Mack and his staff? Only mention on TV is during the sports segment during the news cast.

Wonder what the turn out will be this year compared to last year?

Anybody who gets a D1 scholie is an all valley, MVP of, all conference, honerable former junior some thing of college. For the majority; D1 eats em up, and they produce low #’s.

Nash could use some Kueblerish, Savoish and Englishy players! You know, non-priesty things. Then they do their non-priestly thing to the other team!

When I saw McMinnville, it reminded me that my sister lived in Newberg for many years. I was last there in ’98 or so, unfortunately for her funeral, but have very fond memories of that area. She & her family used to host the UH-Hilo women’s VB teams when they used to play George Fox U., etc. And we have very good friends in Dundee.

Linfield has such a nice campus & feel to it, you must love living there! The wetness reminds me of the Big Island’s volcano area type!

Sorry too much beer. Priests’ rock, should have replied un-something else or unfamilish guy something else.

Economy and Stocks at the 1/2 point bottom of a bottom; worse things for the economy to come for the economy? Cup and Handle -w-out the handle, second bottom of a W for a great recovery, they anticipate.
For stocks could be wonderful and great in a week or a week and half.

I hope Nash gets some recruits that he thinks are great and wonderful!!

Too bad, it (my opinion) it won’t be mutual.

The WAC Football Media Preview is July 28-29 in Salt Lake City. UH is allowed to bring up to two players. John Estes will be one. Any suggestions for the other? Greg Alexander? Fetaiagogo Fonoti? Brashton Satele or Malcolm Lane?

I say none of the above…
My pick would be Inoke Funaki hands down! He is the most mature, respected player on the team! He is a guy that could promote our football team well, he definitely has the likeability factor in his favor!

I agree we need a pure shooter since we have a scorer in Flemings. Lasha “Parking Lot Launcha” is gone, but I’m glad cause he threw up so many bricks we could have busted down Klum Gym and built a new one.

But as far as the post guys…no way, Coach Nash needs a big banger in the post. Balocka is big for nothing and a cry-baby. Amis is not a post player, more small forward type and weak. Adams has hops but for what cause he can’t rebound when getting pushed around. Campbell needs to drink Muscle Milk and hit the gym. Xi whatever his name is, probably doesn’t even know how to bang and will get de-bo in the paint, he ain’t no Yao Ming. We need a true banger who can defend and rebound, and get the easy buckets.

  176. Garret April 24, 2009 7:42 pm

I would choose Fonoti to go with Estes so that both the offense and defense are represented. Fonoti would also receive media attention due to being there and meeting with all the media, which would be a way to help promote him for honors with the WAC.

Inoke has my full respect, but the position he’s playing for the Warriors probably won’t have him eligible for WAC honors. Plus, having a representative from both sides of the ball would allow for both sides of the Warriors to be promoted.

  177. Garret April 24, 2009 7:43 pm

This article goes over the top 5 specialists in the draft, and Ingram is the only long-snapper to make the list.

Jake Ingram, LS, Hawaii (6-3, 232, 4.98): Top-rated long-snapper was consistent in college and should transition well to NFL, making him a possible late-round pick.

  178. Garret April 24, 2009 7:44 pm

    Another article recognizing Veikune.

DE David Veikune, Hawaii — A high-motor defensive end, who knows how to finish once he gets to the quarterback. Veikune (6-foot-2, 257) will not quit against bigger players and will hustle until the whistle (25 tackles for loss and 16 sacks over the last two years). Had a solid Senior Bowl week, where he shined against bigger name competition in drills and in practice. Was solid at the NFL Combine showing good speed (4.79 in the forty) and strength (35 reps) while looking like a future pass-rushing specialist. Veikune is a versatile (lined-up at DE, DT, and OLB in college) and hard-worker type player, so some team will find a spot for him on special teams and on third downs rushing the passer.

  179. Pauoa Boy April 24, 2009 7:45 pm

    NFL Draft…

Good luck to the boys, hopefully Veikune will get the call tomm. Mouton, Ingram, and Josh Leonard should get the call as well sometime on Sunday! Also, good luck to Adam and Solly and other former UH players trying to get back in the NFL…Ryan, Chad, etc…

The NFL must *hate* that teams plan to reveal their draft picks *before* they are announced by the commissioner! This is a great way for the Chargers to get traffic to their website (ESPN and the NFL Network will hate that!) and for the Colts to get twitter followers, but I’m guessing the loophole will be closed before next year’s draft.

The NFL will look into teams revealing their draft picks on their Web sites and through Twitter even before commissioner Roger Goodell might have announced the selections.

The San Diego Chargers plan to post their picks this weekend on their Web site as soon as they hand in the name card. The information could show up on the site before Goodell gets to the podium.

New England also plans to use Twitter to announce its picks in real time.

“We might even get a few draft picks out via Twitter before they are announced on TV, so any Patriots fans following the draft closely are encouraged to begin following RealPatriots on Twitter,”

  182. Pauoa Boy April 24, 2009 7:48 pm

    Garrett,

Howzit, more than likely I bet Fonoti goes too. He and Estes will be the highlighted guys on the team this year.

  183. Garret April 24, 2009 7:49 pm

I wonder why my comments #177 and #178 are awaiting moderation while #181 went through right away. Anyway, congratulations to this Hawaii man for winning this prize.

It was all very real Friday when the 34-year-old Herrera sat at a desk in midtown Manhattan getting yelled at by retired NFL star Michael Strahan in front of a video crew. He beat out 31 other finalists last month in a promotion sponsored by Monster.com and the NFL to become the league’s “Director of Fandemonium.”

In addition to winning the $100,000, Herrera gets to attend the coin toss at the Super Bowl, call a play at the Pro Bowl and participate in on-field introductions at the London game: New England versus Tampa Bay on Oct. 25.

But first, he’ll announce the second-round draft pick Saturday of his beloved Minnesota Vikings.

So how did a guy growing up in Hawaii become a Vikings fan? With no local franchise to root for, he explained, kids pick a team either because they like the style of play or have relatives living in the city.

Well, Herrera doesn’t have any family in Minneapolis.

“I liked those big horn helmets and stuff; I thought that was cool,” he said. “When I was kid, I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to be a Viking.’ Just to be different from everybody else.”

    Pauoa Boy,

Howzit! I could see Brashton going instead of Fonoti because Brashton is the experienced LB returning just like Fonoti is the experienced DL. Both could win postseason WAC honors if the D performs well, as they should be the leaders of their units.

    Garret,

Fonoti definitely, but I got a little skeptical about Brashton when I started hearing Mana Lolotai’s name emerging. To me, if Blaze Soares could by an act of God, remain a season injury free, he would be the face of the Defense. I dunno if it’ll happen for him but I’m hoping. If not then I can see Paipai Falemalu claiming that position for a couple years and maybe the incoming guys like T.J. Alofipo, Chad Lopati, Marcus Malepeai, or Veni Manu.

  204. Ralph April 24, 2009 8:36 pm

at the end of the season Nash only had 2 scholies to build a busted bb program, now he has 5 spots to fill but lacks a recruiting base…..he should have had a list of players to recruit and now he is stuck

  205. Pauoa Boy April 24, 2009 8:36 pm

Hmmm… is it just me or is something wrong with this picture…

UH Basketball team has not one, not, two, not three, but four players leave the team for various reasons? Is this telling you something or what? Coach Nash has alot of work to do and recruiting. What a blow to the ball sacks with Nitoto leaving though. Regardless of his inexperienced play on the court I thought he was the best defensive guy we had this year. Well, looks like we’ll have some new starters at guard next year cause um Hiram Thompson is not that good peeps!

  206. Pauoa Boy April 24, 2009 8:40 pm

    Ralph,

Can we say UH Basketball is pretty much AFU! News just keeps getting worse and worse for our basketball team.

  207. Ralph April 24, 2009 8:45 pm

hey Jason is our bet still on, your ship is sinking and coach Nash has no recruits to fill the cookie jar….back to weatherford and Clackamas for more JC players but the level of play will be the say..a pipeline is good but if the level of play is the same, the results will be another mediocre year..

PB ~ Very good view from your perch about The Little Nash Rambler. It’s not lookin’ like it is up to speed with the rest of the WAC. You pretty much nailed all of the essentials. Thing is, if we see it, why can’t anyone else?

Makes me wonder if there is any hope for BOTH the men or the Wahine program. JD has some decisions to make soon or these 2 programs will suck even more money out of the AD budget.

Sad to see Nitoto leave, but I certainly understand the concern with his family. And if anybody thinks family is not a key aspect to his decision, consider this story:

    http://sports.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090213/SPORTS0204/902130370

We’re definitely going to miss his defensive play. Not sure how the new guards coming in play defensively, so that could be a huge loss.

That said, Ralph, I’m not going to back off on our wager. I’m a man of my word, and I believe in this team.

Larry Farmer,(2nd yr.) at UH; three National Championships as a player at UCLA. Played and coached with the Dean of college coaches; was himself, “the” head coach at UCLA, etc., etc., etc. With his extensive connections in college basketball, what????, no more any connections to some very good prospects???…I don’t get it???

Is coach Nash doing the recruiting ALL by himself o-what???? cause sure looks like he ain’t getting any help from anywhere else??

  240. Garret April 25, 2009 4:53 am

Article mentions the possibility of the 49ers drafting Veikune.

How can you not love David Veikune of Hawaii? He can squat 500 pounds and bench press 485, he has a fine motor and can drop into coverage. He could be a real find in the mid-rounds, particularly after his nine-sack senior year. The knock on him is the same as English; he might not have the quickness to be a factor as a pass rusher.

KGMB article (and video) about Jake Ingram and the draft.

“It’s definitely getting harder to sleep and I’m getting anxious and I’m starting to think about that day more and more,” he said.

The Mililani graduate originally came to UH to be a defensive lineman.

“Even when I did change and Coach Jones was like you really have some potential to be a great long snapper, I was like ‘yeah right. Just let me play,'” he said.

One of the real disadvantages, it’s not often that long snappers are drafted.

“I think there’s been one guy drafted in the last 3 years which was last year a guy Tyler Schmitt. But maybe it’ll happen for me,” he said.

So far New England, Seattle and Kansas City are some of the teams who have talked to Ingram the most.

The number of known cases in Mexico has passed 1,000 and the number of known cases in the US is increasing…with 4 in San Diego county!

Despite efforts to forestall panic, the quickly expanding disease is causing global alarm after infecting more than 1,000 people in Mexico. It’s probably too late to contain the outbreak, said leaders of the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About the APR (academic progress rate)

Teams falling under a score of 925 (below a 60-percent graduation rate) over the four-year reporting period and have players leave school while ineligible — so-called “0-for-2s” — are subject to penalties.

How serious can the APR affect UH teams losing scholarships?

    Take a look:

Football-(2004-2005) 869 resulting in the loss of 5 scholarships
Basketball-(2006-2007) 889 resulting in the scholarship count dropping from 13 to 11

With word that 4-5 UH basketball players leaving the program Coach Nash is further behind the eight ball because not only does have to play catch up in finding recruits, but, now, the APR is going to take a hit as well with the loss of 4-5 players leaving the program. Not a happy time for Coach Nash and the basketball coaches and JD.

somehow the mbb does not seem to be functioning too well. gain 2 offensive guards and lose one defensive one. have 2 asst coaches with major connections and no recruits. on surface, this is not good, but will give coach nash one more year. if he no can produce, then it is aloha and thanks for the memories.

Nash has to fill the scholies this year. With his job on the line I don’t think that he can afford to wait till next year. He guaranteed 18 wins so he has to deliver quickly and needs to bring in players immediately. The recruiting period is not over yet so give him and his staff a chance.

  281. warriorfanny2 April 25, 2009 7:26 am

Jim Donovan has to be more aggressive in these times and acknowledge that he is not operating a union on lower Manoa. Give Hawaii tax payin fans more credit–we know a lemon when we see it…..historically, it has been the case at UH that the guyz in the red wagons arent summoned until the O’Leary cow kicks the oil lattern on the haystack….rollin over the Nash contract only prolonged the pain and set back the recovery timetable….we need stronger and more decisive leadership from Donovan–no mas–no more bailouts!

Without a love of my own

Brew Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, “Please adore me”
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

The advance unit for today’s TGate should be on the scene or very nearly so, anyhow.

I hope we get a lot of updates and photos of the TGate and the scrimmage.

  286. Maverick April 25, 2009 7:39 am

    Speaking of AD Donavon,
I’m still dissapointed with the agreement made with Oceanic Cable and streaming UH sports.
This decision has eliminated 50% of the Hawaii mkt. fanbase that chose to use Satellite ( Dish or Direct TV), and has no choice since Oceanic doesn’t route to every neighborhood that is rural.

Think about this. It’s punishment towards our competitive free market.

Why not agree to have both Oceanic and Hawaiian Tel to stream and open up competition and a better service ?

  287. whitey April 25, 2009 7:47 am

    koakane, thanks.

read ST’s twitters on bolla and i tried to picture bolla walking towards ST and ST putting on his best stealth moves. somehow bolla is like the plague, but give the man guts (or stupidity) if he thinks that the athletic dept going be friendly after he had filed his lawsuit. in a way bolla reminds me of that cartoon character joe splizit (spp) who is always followed by a dark rain cloud with lightning.

  288. whitey April 25, 2009 7:52 am

can see 300 on the horizon before ST puts up his new post

  306. Mrs. A-House April 25, 2009 8:11 am

Jr Day at UH, FIRST EVER IN HAWAII HISTORY, but not nearly a word except for when Coach Mack is being interviewed on TV. Now, what’s with dat? Where is the SID??? Is this within the job description???

Coach Mack did say about 90 players and their parents will be there about now. He did emphasize that this is an “unofficial visit” and they must pay for all food consumed. Good luck to Coach Mack and his staff on this historic day in UH sports history. Maybe, some other UH coach will do the same for their sport; afterall, football does not have a lock on Jr-Day.

  307. brew808 April 25, 2009 8:11 am

I am doing fine. Izzy is still luckless. This economy is just the pits. Heck, even the local Chez Ronald is not hiring any kids. It is weird. I think it may be worse before it begins to improve.

    Wafan & Brew808 –

Good Morning! Mahalo for your cheerful greetings on this beautiful mornng in Hawaii Nei! Post #304 was A-House, so the merry-go-round at our house continues. D1 will set him straight right pronto!

Of course, I will oblige you by consuming enough and yelling enough for the three of us. There is indeed a huge amount of excitement in the air. I counted at least a dozen posts over the past few days of Homey asking KK “so, what time we going meet?” Kudos to KK, Homey and James (Jesse) for setting up early and serving as official greeters.

You both have a great day! We’re leaving for the Cabana so bye for now…

Hmm.. Maybe Jr Day is something every School of Study should be doing at UH. That way each department will start to focus on their strengths as they groom themselves for the event and possibly grow in positive ways through self-actualization, eh?

    nah… makes too much sense… forget it…

  323. Garret April 25, 2009 9:36 am

Looks like U-dub and Washington State won’t play at Qwest field after all.

A controversial plan to play the Apple Cup at Qwest Field died Friday as officials at both schools said plans on how to best allocate tickets proved to be a deal-breaker.

Initial plans were to divide tickets evenly each year, giving 31,000 to each school. Qwest Field seats 67,000.

But the Huskies wanted more tickets to be able to account for as many of their season-ticket holders as possible. UW had 43,000 season-ticket holders last season and anticipates having that many again this year.

The proposal was hatched as a way to raise additional revenue. The teams split the revenues for the game, estimated as $280,000 when the game is played in Pullman and $800,000 when it is played at Husky Stadium.

There were estimates that the Qwest Field game might give each school about $10 million over the six years. That money was expected to come from having more seats to sell over the six years (Pullman’s Martin Stadium seats 35,000) and increasing the prices gradually through the life of the deal, as well as selling suites at Qwest.

  324. Garret April 25, 2009 9:39 am

Rich Ellerson is putting a 6’10” player at WR!

The more and more, I think about the move of 6-foot-10 junior Ali Villanueva to wide receiver, the more I think it could turn out to be a work of genius.

It basically puts a sixth offensive linemen on the field and gives Army a red-zone weapon no other team has.

But clearly, press coverage against him is a little different than the other receivers you’ll see the rest of your life. If you are a corner, he’ll just run over you. He’s like a speed bump. It’s a different dynamic. We’re going to have a lot of fun with it. We use those unbalanced formations. We’ll still take advantage of his background at tackle.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Have fun at the T-gate and scrimmage.

I heard earlier that the today’s 1st game of the doubleheader would be on DishNetwork somewhere, but I can’t find it on the schedule. Did I hear it incorrectly or is it just being shown regionally and not in Hawaii?

  327. afan April 25, 2009 1:45 pm

Hilobilly, my reply was totally callous and insensitive.

I just dislike funeral kind of stuff. Felt that deep sadness and helpless feeling before. Been in that situation, tragic and too sad. That funeral stuff started to bring that sadness that I rechanneled to that stupid reply. I was totally very low class and out of line. I apologize.

Maybe someday forgive that callous, damn reply; but, I doubt it. I was full of beer. You full of your ohana.
