CSUN adds sand vb, sport closer to NCAA championship

Believe this gives the sport 31 teams. 40 required for NCAA to sponsor a championship. Quite a growth heading into its third season.

California State University, Northridge announced the addition of women’s sand volleyball as the Matadors’ 19th intercollegiate sport Friday. Jeff Stork, head coach of the Matadors’ indoor volleyball team, will be the head coach of the sand team. The Matadors’ sand squad will begin competition this spring, and will feature 14 returners from CSUN’s 2013 indoor squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

CSUN is the fourth Big West Conference institution to add sand volleyball as a varsity sport following Hawaii, Long Beach State and Cal Poly. Recent schools to add sand volleyball are Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, South Carolina and LSU. Several Pac-12 institutions, including UCLA and USC, already sponsor sand volleyball as does crosstown rival Pepperdine.

Good news. You’re quite a ways off on your “31”. I do believe that CSUN makes it 40.

You’re probably right. I was just going by numbers I read. which was 15 in 2012, 15 in 2013.
    Thanks.

AVCA put this updated list out in Dec. but didn’t do a good job as far as numbering them. The left hand column of current programs totals 38 and CSUN would make it 39 but I believe someone else announced adding a 2014 team since this was put out but I don’t recall who it was.

I thought it was being changed to beach volleyball, I hate calling it sand volleyball.
Hopefully when it’s an official ncaa sport it will be called Beach.

  11. Warriorfan January 24, 2014 12:06 pm

Kind of surprised UCSB hasn’t added a beach team yet.

  12. Cindy Luis January 24, 2014 2:02 pm

    4. HPU has had a team since 2012. but they don’t have it listed as an official sport yet.
    14. think it’s in the process of changing the name to be in line with the international sport called beach.
believe the original intent of ‘sand’ was to make it a more attractive term for the schools that don’ that don’t have a beach.
    11. agree.

  13. Cindy Luis January 24, 2014 2:12 pm

    4. that collegesand.org lists 40 schools, not counting CSUN and HPU.

    11.

If I’m not mistaken when they announced Gregory’s retirement from the UCSB women’s program, her goal was to remain with the school and help develop the sand program. I’m guessing that’s in the works.

    14. heard that as well. Would make so much sense
