Warrior – 49er rewind Night 2
A very good win for the Rainbow Warriors tonight. it ties the series at 38-38
one of the keys was early, in Set 1, where they opened with Timmer serving. in men’s volleyball you only have 6 subs and can only re-enter once. The lineup allowed them to have Timmer serve twice.
They also went without a libero a couple of times at the end. Averill, who got beat up all night when being stepped on under the net, had a couple of key digs. Taking nothing away from Kanetake, who had a career-high 15 digs.
What was more impressive was how Hawaii put the really bad calls against them behind them and played through. One net was so bad that Averill was standing, with his arms straight up and the net hit him in the chest.
Not sure what Olsen’s injury is. He left after Set 2 and didn’t return.
Sedore 24 kills, Averill 12. both career highs. Zarkovic came on at the end with key kills, finished with 11.
UH 7 aces, 21 SEs (argh). The Beach 1 ace, 14 SEs. Crabb 22-5-49, 10 digs. Greogry 10 kills, 12 digs. UH did a really good job on Satterfield 10-5-32, 12 digs. Ammerman 10 kills.
The Beach with a 13-9.5 edge in blocks. UH 2-1 blocks in Set 5.

Fantastic win tonight. The Warriors played really ragged but they just toughed it out and pulled out the win. I’m so damn proud of this team tonight.
Pardon my rant: I’d also like to ask everyone who reads this to write Oceanic and thank them for not broadcasting the best men’s volleyball match of the season so far. It was exactly the kind of match that I think would start getting more people to pay more attention to the men’s game. Tell them thanks for nothing.

3. Can’t disagree with you, I felt for the fans that can not attend matches. I know OC says they are trying to save money yet they have no problems showing tons of high school softball and women’s basketball, so not buying it.
While I’m sorry to see Jace get injured, I think Fey played very well in his place.
Brook really stepped it up and even outplayed last year’s POY.
I still am waiting for Wade to put in Siki, Sedore and Mol at the same time though.
Our Brook drowned their Crabb!! 😉
Not televising helped the team. Bigger and louder crowd clearly helped pull out the win.
It was a great game to watch. Sedore was unstoppable. Kolby played his best game and Holt came through in the clutch. I thought that Wade put in Fey because Olsen was having an off night. Any way Fey is ready for prime time. I would also like to see more of Mol and the lefty from England. I wonder if Siki is feeling ok. He is solid but I think he will be more like Crabb down the stretch.
Olsen’s injury was probably related to all the missed center line calls that Ernie and that horrible R1 failed to make…
If it had been on TV, that one should’ve been sent to league for review. Very, very suspect officiating.
@warriorfan – it would be tough to have Mol and Sedore on the court at the same time because they play the same position (opposite, on the right side). it could happen on a blocking sub, just unsure which of your outsides (Jace/Siki/Fey) would be substituted out so you could have the frontline you’re asking for.
@don – regarding Olsen, it was kind of weird. he kind of collided with someone (I forget who exactly) when going for a dig, like he hyperextended his leg or something (not going to speculate on the injury) kind of near the end of the first set; he toughed it out through set 2 but in between sets 2 and 3, could not give it a go and Fey provided one of the many huge lifts off the bench (which is the point WarriorFan made earlier) to start set 3 and helped UH eventually get the win
#5, Oh please, not having this match televised had absolutely NOTHING to do with UH’s win last night. Give credit where credit is due. It was the team’s perseverance and passion that led to the win. I have no doubt that the crowd’s support helped the team a lot to play hard and push on through despite trailing in the match. But not televising this match is completely irrelevant to that fact. And besides last night’s attendance was “clearly” less than the crowd during last weekend’s match b/w UH and UCLA.
2. Rayson: Is it really Oceanic’s call? They may have been asked by UH to not film it, so as to increase ticket sales/get the Warriors a bigger support.
If we can remind ourselves that UH fans have D1 volleyball nearly the entire year, there is much to be grateful for, no?
9. According to the news article a couple nights ago it was Oceanic’s decision:
In uncharacteristic programming, only Thursday’s match will be televised. OC Sports, which owns the local television rights to UH sports, will not televise Friday’s rematch between the Mountain Sports Federation teams.
In past years, nearly all the Rainbow Warriors’ home matches were televised. Dan Schmidt, OC Sports’ general manager and executive producer, said there are “limited resources” for producing UH sporting events.
“We chose not to do it on a Friday night when people can show up on their own,” Schmidt said.

I wonder what the neighboring islands think of that statement.
10 Which means that next Friday’s match against UC San Diego will not be televised? I was really surprised why the game was not televised last night – one of the best games played so far by the Warriors especially in the 5th set. Go Warriors!!
10. limited resources and yet they decide to show a bunch of meaningless high school all star games on their sister channel and every wahine basketball game ( no offense to them) and are the three panelists in between sets 2 and 3 really necessary??( although I do like Kevin wong and lisa Strand Maa)
8. I just think that’s the lineup with the most firepower offensively. I like Brook on the left.
Jace is a good player but he is not that much better of a passer/digger than Brook is and Brook is way better offensively.
While Mol is green, I think he can really grow the most as the season progresses and be at his peak during MPSF tourney play.
14-Brook is not a regular passer in on serve receive. In UH’s serve receive, the opposite (this case it’s Sedore) is never in the passing rotation; the 3 main passers are the 2 Outside Hitters and the Libero. Sedore was actually subbed for the libero on serve receive last night as UH left Averill in the back row, hidden behind the 3 passers.
Brook really only swings on one rotation on the left side anyway
15: Yes, usually the left side hitters are the passers and the Opposites doesn’t pass but you can always change the serve receive pattern. The Wahine used Boogard as an primary passer even though she played opposite (in fact in my opinion she was the Wahine’ best passer at that time). Last year the men would occasionally change to a 4-man serve receive pattern, using Sedore as a passer.
I swear I remember Sedore saying at the end of last season that he actually prefers playing left side which is the position he played in high school. I agree with Warriorfan that a Siki, Sedore and Mol line up would probably maximize their offensive power. On the other hand, Olsen is a better passer than Sedore. And where does Fey fit in?
7. Olsen’s injury happened when he and Averill ran into each other going for a ball (late in Set 1) I believe.
But agree the refs were horrible and you have to give the team credit for playing through those calls.
2. it ended up being a great match. but there was no way TV would know that. If they had, they would have gone with Friday’s match and not Thursdays IIMHO.

8. there is tape of the match both available from the UH arena video and from the camera used to exchange game films. The up-ref was from the MPSF. the linesmen are local.
That UH has television tape for most games is a luxury most of the other teams in the league don’t have, outside of BYU. which televises most home matches. sometimes on a delayed basis if they decide to run men’s basketball road game live.

If Oceanic has limited resources to produce UH sporting events, then they should not put in a bid to the rights. It sucks it was not shown on tv….not everyone can go to the games even if they really want to. Oceanic needs to get their act together or like I said, don’t bid for the rights.
24. Oceanic’s bid to televise UH sports was accepted by UH. It includes their right to decide which games are televised.
What I don’t understand is this sudden furor. This is not new. They have opted to do baseball instead of volleyball several times during numerous seasons. As did K-5. The only difference this time is that it wasn’t another UH sport that was the conflict.
Cindy, that is my point. If there was another sport they chose to televise instead, I would not be upset about it, because I do understand a choice would have to be made.
But in this case, there was no other game to televise, they said they lacked the resources….to me, if you are going to lack the resources, then don’t put in a bid to be the station to televise the athletics. Yes, it is their choice because they were chosen by UH, but if you are chosen, then do what you bid to do.
Agree it seemed a lame excuse but it is a business and they know their finances. every match, i’m told, costs $25,000-$30,000 to produce. they rely on commercials to generate revenue and if the ad money isn’t there, tough to pay the bills.
Their bid did not promise all games in all sports. they are doing selected softball, water polo, baseball and men’s volleyball games. again, UH accepted that bid on those terms.
So people can get a jump on this … OC16 televising only one of the UCSD matches this week. not sure which but believe it’s Sunday that won’t be televised.
18. Perhaps they don’t let the opposite pass because Sedore isn’t as consistent a passer as the other hitters. And he’s their go-to guy on offense, and in UH’s system, most of the time it’s the opposite who carries the majority of the offense while the outsides are primarily passers. Didn’t Theocharidis move to opposite at one point with Ching and Zimet as the primary passers? Same with the Matt Bender era, when he was their leading attacker while the likes of Delgado, Jeschke, Woodward, etc. were the OH passers.
