Big Island RB joins Warriors

There will be another Joey in the Warriors’ backfield this training camp.

Joseph “Joey” Pacheco, a Big Island resident who played at Hartnell College last year, has joined the Warriors as a walk-on.

photo-7“I love that kid,” Hartnell coach Matt Collins said. “I think he’ll be a guy, they’ll realize, who brings something to the table.”

Collins said the speedy Pacheco was mostly a receiver, but he also can play running back, a position he will be used with the Warriors. He has two years to play two UH seasons.

Pacheco is listed at 5 feet 7 and 185 pounds, but Collins noted, “he’s a great blocker. That’s one of the things most impressive about him. He brings tenacity to the blocking game. He’s a got a hell of a motor. He good on the stop-and-go. He’s a complete player.”

Collins said  Pacheco’s best game was in last year’s Living Breath Foundation Bowl. It came two weeks after he suffered a concussion and a week after suffering a separated shoulder. But Pacheco played well, Collins said, and “he had a nail-in-the-coffin touchdown catch on a screen.”

Pacheco, who earned an associate degree, had a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

“He’s an under-sized and over-achieving player,” Collins said.

9–Shoko, you are right, the last time we had players of that stature (premium contracts for All-Pro types) were probably from my era…Jesse, Mark and Al. Although, we have had many guys plays on Sundays, not many had upper tier contracts, (besides the players I just mentioned) other than probably Jason Elam.

It was also nice to hear that another group of Utah players contributed a tad over 1.6 million as well. Maybe, it will inspire future players…

  11. hatakeman July 29, 2014 10:23 am

But what’s happening with 2015 recruiting? Little time between now and the end of the 2014 season to focus on recruiting, so offers need to go out now. But the web has been silent the past few weeks on UH recruiting.

  12. Shoko July 29, 2014 10:41 am

    10. Thanks for the credit, but that was OSD’s comment. 😉

I think UH needs to find that next, well-hidden, franchise quarterback that can secure a five-year $110 million contract like Kaepernick.

Yet, interestingly enough, I have yet to hear of Kap donating back to his alma mater. Perhaps the check is in the mail as they say.

  13. kawika49 July 29, 2014 11:43 am

Just bring the malasadas and Pao dos. we got one now.

  14. cocobean July 29, 2014 11:58 am

Joey P sounds sounds like a guy who can contribute a lot to special teams. A speedy player who likes to block(hit) would be useful on the kick return and coverage teams.

  15. hoiosalad July 29, 2014 12:24 pm

Pacheco and Iosepa could be tagged as “Little Joe” and “Hoss”!

  16. Manoa Mist July 29, 2014 12:27 pm

Wow what a signing – a 5’7, 180lb RB from Hartnell College. Don’t get any better than that!! But who knows maybe this kid is the next Chad Owens.

  17. bowwar July 29, 2014 12:45 pm

It’s not always the size of the body, but the size of the heart!! Hope this works out for Pacheco and UH.

    Good noonish everyone!

    Welcome to Joey Pacheco!

  19. Boolakanaka July 29, 2014 1:01 pm

Guess what Marcus Mariota’s two classes are this fall? Golfing and yoga.

To be totally upfront, Buddha already earned his general science last spring–the two class are to just stay enrolled in school. Ironic though those are the two classes boola always took as well, only difference I took them every semester, and I took them for like almost 18 semesters.

  20. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2014 1:07 pm

You should be a scratch player by now huh ?

  21. Boolakanaka July 29, 2014 1:11 pm

SAT–the only thing I scratch now is my head, on why I still have a slice after all these years!

  22. Old School Dave July 29, 2014 1:27 pm

Interesting read from the past about UH’s Power Brokers. One common characteristic is that many attended private schools here locally and then mainland universities before coming back home.

    http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2010/Mar/28/sp/hawaii3280398.html

  23. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2014 1:30 pm

Slice is natural in everyone… but great stress reliever…especially after a hard week of work..or maybe in younger days…a month or so after a “heavy date” he he he

I have a sure fire way to cure slice…put a drop of wesson oil on the ball that comes in contact with club…straight as an arrow when contact is made…he he he…but only when kala is involved ….

  24. Boolakanaka July 29, 2014 1:39 pm

Bert Sr, has major pull, and operates with the so-called “big boys” on both the local and national level. Unlike most of these other fellas, is a public school guy, that started off at KCC. If there is large money to be made and/or solicited, look for the Kobayashi name to be attached.

  25. 3-Prong July 29, 2014 2:07 pm

boo: You slice the ball too? Try Cobra offset clubs. Unbelievable difference in my game once I converted.

  26. Rodney July 29, 2014 2:27 pm

    Apple in or out?Who decides?

  27. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2014 2:41 pm

I not know the reason 4 his spats with lassner or bert jr… but the idea of each dept. there to acquire their own funding…sounds like a good way to travel… for the future of UH..

And i guess some deans there not like to go n hustle for their own programs… so maybe rubbing very many the wrong way…is sad… cuz seems like he had the experience in doing that in his background…

hope he stays on in some capacity…

  28. SteveM July 29, 2014 3:02 pm

I am awaiting more info on the situation of Chancellor Apple. If it was a lot of personal stuff, as the media speculates, then we may never know. I have somewhat neutral about Apple, but the news stories in the Star-Advertiser keep emphasizing what I consider a pro and con…

PRO: Stories keep mentioning the “Wonder Blunder” just after he took office. While it technically happened under his watch, it was President Greenwood who exacerbated the situation, threw Sheriff and Donovan under the bus, and refused to reinstate JD under an obvious personal agenda. Don’t know Apple’s involvement and behind the scenes advice in this fiasco, but I gave him a “pass” as the new guy just following orders in the ivory tower.

CON: It is interesting to read in today’s Star-Advertiser that Apple “wants to continue working to improve accessibility for students and turn around budget troubles…”. Fine, but a cynic might point out that for $439,000 salary ($53,000 more than the current President), most people would want to stay and help too.

Note the irony that the reportedly second highest paid person at the UH want to help turn around the budget woes. There’s a way to save $439,000 a year…

QUESTION: In the Greenwood fiasco, didn’t she create a student liaison type executive position for around $240,000 for Donovan after the fallout and lawsuit? The position was answerable only to the President. That position was never filled as JD did not accept it. If it exists and Apple really wants to stay for the students, would he take that position? It would certainly aid his credibility on budget relief.

  29. Boolakanaka July 29, 2014 3:04 pm

Apple came from an institution where each department had to basically self-supporting, thus it would not be surprising if that paradigm was his first preference at UH. Hard to get of the dole (pardon the UH pun) when you have been fed by the institution all these years…

  30. cocobean July 29, 2014 3:23 pm

    RE: Apple.

The only winners are going to be the lawyers and DMK. The lawyers for obvious reasons and DMK for the face time she’ll receive giving her opinions. KHON already aired her initial reaction to the “news.” Bet there’s more to come from her.

I only know what I’ve read in the paper and seen on the news but I find it very curious the the first important task performed by Lassner is to try and oust his second in command. Makes me wonder he’s trying to please the forces that backed him for his job.

  31. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2014 3:53 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

My head’s spinning with all this stuff. Trying to get caught up with football personnel, and I keep getting distracted by the extra-ca-ricka-lax instead.

Welcome home, Joey Pacheco! Geev ‘um, Bruddah! (hahaha… I typed “Josh” and had to backspace da buggah!)

    Have a great day, everyone!

UH president BEMOANS ‘public spectacle’ over Apple.

    see SA breaking news.

  33. SteveM July 29, 2014 4:00 pm

    RE: my #28

I found Chancellor Apple’s memo to Jim Donovan assigning him to a newly created position. It was for promotion, community outreach and PR, not necessarily UH student outreach…

  34. Stephen Tsai July 29, 2014 4:02 pm

I ran into Joey Pacheco today. Interesting guy. And he doesn’t lack confidence.

  35. Stephen Tsai July 29, 2014 4:03 pm

Interesting letter by the UH president.
One thing that appears to be missing: Is Apple in or out?
Other than that, it was an interesting letter.

  36. Shoko July 29, 2014 4:25 pm

“Unfortunately, many statements are circulating and the privacy I had hoped for has been compromised with a mix of truths and rumors from many sources,” Lassner said. “I regret that my attempt at maintaining privacy and dignity has been perceived by some as lacking transparency and accountability.”

Frankly speaking, I don’t see how this was going to turn into anything other than a full-blown public spectacle when you consider the history of UH when news of this nature becomes public.

Never understood why leadership doesn’t recognize when you attempt to ouster someone it has the potential to turn into a circus. Have a feeling this could turn out to be another post Wonder Blunder 2.0.

    Par for the course!

  37. Stephen Tsai July 29, 2014 4:25 pm

It was really, really hot out there at the workouts today.

  38. islandman July 29, 2014 4:27 pm

The students (student gov’t leaders) want him in and are planning a sit-in on Thursday and ” will stay until the president allows Apple to serve out the remaining three years of his contract.”

When was the last sit-in held at UH ?

    Thursday,http://www.kaleo.org/news/students-plan-to-protest-demand-that-apple-stay/article_e09ba168-1786-11e4-8fe8-001a4bcf6878.html

  39. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2014 4:58 pm

Funny huh…those depts…that over budget…with red ink…will be applied to next budget…surely they will complain his actions in forgiving his actions with the AD dept…

Me just wonder how long this has been going on…the red ink…n which programs…how long have they been ‘mama’s boy’ n not caring about ever keeping within their means…

    like that russian dude says…”what a country”…..

wish a reporter would ask mr. apple for that list of “big spenders” now that would be transparency…

transparency and accountability mr. lassaner… can do ?

  40. Bondancr July 29, 2014 5:46 pm

Welcome Joey! (now go out and make us some TD’s)

  41. Haleakala July 29, 2014 6:05 pm

The “sources” at UH that “leaked” the news about Apple should really lose their jobs before he does. Their “inside knowledge” was apparently not entirely true. But some in the media couldn’t resist the publicizing the scoop without getting verification from the President. Don’t believe everything you read or hear when the information is from “reliable sources” when none of the sources are named.

Being in the position that he is in, there are some at UH who apparently can’t wait to see Apple go and didn’t mind creating a spectacle about it.

  42. oneseason July 29, 2014 6:11 pm

If a supervisor thinks a subordinate is underperforming, documented performance feedback and counseling would be expected and appropriate. If somebody publicizes the situation, the process that management is pursuing is not helped. However, it would be inappropriate for management to comment on an ongoing personnel action. The UH President seems to be making the best of an unfortunate situation.

  43. tommui July 29, 2014 6:30 pm

ST #35 – great minds think alike.

Either Chancellor Apple is in or he is out.

Is you is or is you not my baby?

  44. tom-warriornation July 29, 2014 7:02 pm

Anyone planning to going to the UH football game at San Jose St. on Nov. 15? We have a block of about 200 seats just for Hawaii fans at the 50 yard line 10-20 rows right behind our Warrior bench–come join us! Email me at: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  45. oneseason July 29, 2014 7:04 pm

#41 … the initial “leak” seemed to focus on the cost of terminating the Chancellor’s contract without cause. It didn’t come across to me as somebody leaking to gloat about his removal.

  46. NorthShoreFan July 29, 2014 7:39 pm

imho…I still haven’t heard anything elated to “non-performance’ or anything related to his job performance. Mostly just about ..he pissed some people off because of budget cut mandates. If one is trying to balance the budget sheet, don’t budget cuts play a role? Corporate cuts have hit employees, departments etc. …. Is this guy getting fired because he is doing his job? or because someone just don’t like him?..stay tuned as the Looney Tunes continue…
The new guy got to watch his okole too. If he screws this up, he might be following right behind Apple.

  47. NorthShoreFan July 29, 2014 7:40 pm

    related to…oops

Always good to see a local boy choosing to play for UH…..but still wanna know what’s up with the Oregon, Nebraska, and U-Dub guys.

  51. $ July 29, 2014 9:27 pm

Is Monday’s practice open to the public?

  52. Gottagonow July 29, 2014 9:27 pm

Like I commented earlier, UH, athletic dept. better do a complete audit of their books for 2012 and 2013, ASAP. They will find a trail from a dirty rat…you cannot have a 2 million, dollar deficit year after year for 10 years. Only profit yr. was the Sugar Bowl. I smell a rat of an inside job…..who has the guts to call for the audit? Then, have the results printed in the Star Advertiser…public right to know!

  53. jm2375 July 29, 2014 10:18 pm

    Hello Tsaikos!

Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Pacheco.

As stated many times, the vast majority of athletic depts, esp in the FBS, lose money. Can we give it a rest, already?

  54. cocobean July 29, 2014 10:31 pm

#41. J. N. Musto, executive director of the UHPA, a self described friend of Tommy A., was the first UH “official” to go on camera to confirm a move was under way to oust Tommy. He said he heard it from Tommy himself.

  55. maddog50 July 30, 2014 3:13 am

I hope Mr. Pacheco can make a contribution…..can’t coach speed or quickness. On another note the idea of giving back per the article on the Utah player, I was on scholarship at UH. If not for that opportunity things would have turned out a lot differently for me. A week from Saturday I will sponsor a golf outing with 70+ friends and family. There at least 4 former players from way back when. I solicit donations and run a split the pot with the proceeds going to Na Koa. I was asked why I did this? Simple I am on a mission over time to repay the scholarship I received…long way from my goal but steadily gaining speed, hope to raise 2 to 3K just from this alone…..it may take some time but I will get it done. It is a pleasure to see so many guys with no attachment to UH sporting “Warrior” gear!!! It is good to be a Warrior. I have to regularly explain what “Na Koa” means, but give me a 20 dollar donation and I will be glad to……wish Na Koa had 1000 members……in time!

  56. A-House July 30, 2014 7:55 am

    maddog50:

it is heart warming to hear what you are doing to assist Na Koa

like you said, it’s a long term project that will only grow with time

thank you for representing UH and giving back to the program

all it takes is effort like yours to make it successful
