    What? No moa desk?

  2. T0fuzuke July 23, 2014 7:56 am

    Represent 808!

  3. papajoe2 July 23, 2014 8:00 am

    Good morning everybody!

  4. tommui July 23, 2014 8:03 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  5. Dennis Halloran July 23, 2014 8:14 am

In about a month, 808 people will have a chance to see one of the greatest HS teams in History IMO
St John Bosco is loaded again and watching Sean McGrew is worth the price of admission against St Louis
SJB has it all, size, speed skilled QB. I watched them in two summer passing tourneys and they are better than last year and they were 16=0 Don’t miss the start of the season in style for you football buffs.

  6. st. anthony trojan July 23, 2014 8:18 am

Besides the two warriors..who else from UHAD is there in attendance ?

  7. Papakolei-n July 23, 2014 8:39 am

#5. I am looking forward to watching that game when it comes around! Don’t think St Louis is a walk in the park, you sound just like some of my friends that live in Vegas, when Bishop Gorman came to the 808 state and they were telling me how BG was going to wipe the floor with STL, telling me about how they have the best players and sound just about the same as you do! FYI I don’t know if anybody has told you yet but one of the best, if not the best high school coach of all time in 808 football is back at STL and he has a stud crew of assistant coachs with him! Oh BTW STL beat BG

  8. hatakeman July 23, 2014 8:47 am

Joey Iosefa and Beau Yap are very good representatives for the Warriors. I am glad they have the opportunity to enjoy this experience.

  9. hwnstyll July 23, 2014 8:52 am

    When is the game?

  10. tom-warriornation July 23, 2014 8:56 am

GO WARRIORS–102 of us will be there at the 50 yd line at SDSU on Oct. 18 right behind your bench to cheer you on! If anyone wants to join us: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  11. Rodney July 23, 2014 8:59 am

I’ve heard too that Cal and Ron
    have an outstanding staff,plus the
    Guru Vinnie! Go Saints!
Anyone want to see the R n shoot
    It’s back!!!

  12. C-Pop July 23, 2014 9:14 am

Great to have Cal & Ron back up on Kalaepohaku! Go Saints!

  13. jeezy33 July 23, 2014 9:33 am

It will be like Maurice Drew all over again… He didn’t add the Jones till later. Sean McGrew will be unstoppable. With all those false 4.3 4.4 40s out there, McGrew is a legit speed guy and will be one of the fastest players in the country. Should be fun to watch.

  14. Andrew July 23, 2014 9:39 am

It’s good to hear that Craig Thompson is committed to keep Hawai’i in the conference if BYU joins. Although we all know what someone says can easily be opposite of what ones actions are. I just had this eerie feeling that if BYU was to join the MWC again, one of their conditions might be that they would not want Hawaii. Seems a bit extreme but possible considering in 1998 they were one of the schools not happy about the travel in the league.

  15. Wes'side Warrior July 23, 2014 9:46 am

    Morning, Gang!

Great pics, ST! Mahalo! And great reps in Iosefa and Yap.

    Have a great day, everyone!

  16. Wes'side Warrior July 23, 2014 9:55 am

As mentioned elsewhere… If you guys are in the area, please support Bruddah Bobby across from Waimanalo Beach Park this Saturday, 26July2014, 10a-4p. He is an original Georgia Chaptah Tsaiko who recently moved back home, and is trying to raise funds to run his own lunch wagon. Bruddah can cook! As in Georgia, look for his sign, “Kalama’s Kuisine”. On the menu is Portuguese Bean Soup w/Rice Bowls, and Banana Bread Bowls. You can also preorder by sending him a message on facebook, via the flyer on his or my facebook page. They are also having a yard sale during this event.

    Support a fellow Tsaiko!!! Mahalo!

  17. Wes'side Warrior July 23, 2014 9:57 am

Wait.. did I say “Banana Bread Bowls”? Hahaha! Supposed to be “Banana Bread Loaves”.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 23, 2014 10:03 am

This is a big-time conference. There was a carving station at lunch.

  19. Papakolei-n July 23, 2014 10:17 am

#13. Did you go and watch that game? De La Salle vs STL because I did and I tell you what every body was saying that STL was going to get trashed by DLS and by no means did STL get trashed! The game was a very close game all the way to the end. MJD did go for over a hundred yds and he had a bum ankle, but by no means did he go over the 200 hundred plus yards that he was running against some of those schools in Cali! I am born and raised 808 and will always pull for the local team! No matter how hyped up a team from the mainland is, and if STL losses, then no tears from me because we were supposed to lose, but if they do better then expected then that is just all right by me!

  20. All Nuha Already July 23, 2014 10:23 am

I cannot believe Iʻm saying this, but good job Dave Reardon today.
I agree with Dave 100%, how in Godʻs name does Gib Arnold get a 3 year contract extension? How the heck is he the highest paid basketball coach in the conference? What the hell is Ben Jay thinking?

Pretty simple, put together a worthless schedule versus a bunch of damn nobodyʻs, then scream loudly, “Hey we won 20 games.”

Itʻs a joke, the programʻs a joke, the coach is a joke, the AD is looking more like a joke everyday.

Oh, and not one, not one post season conference win yet. Not one.

Oh, and do the math, he may have run out more players than heʻs recruited. Just saying.

Oh, and the program is still under investigation.

    Is this “Last Comic Standing”…?

  21. Rodney July 23, 2014 10:31 am

    #19 Ron Lee R n S will always
    keep em in the game.
Don’t they have one of the fastest
WR in state of Hawaii Stubified?

  22. NotNasti July 23, 2014 10:38 am

    21. Rodney: Stubblefield now at UH.

  23. Papakolei-n July 23, 2014 10:40 am

Yes I believe the run-shoot will keep them in the game! And no they don’t have Stubblefield, he will be a true freshman for the Warriors this season!

  24. Andrew July 23, 2014 10:41 am

    20.

I can see the question about his raise but as far as the contract extension, I think to save a fall in recruiting it had to be done. The investigation is already a tool that other teams can use to recruit against UH, but if the job of Gib was in question, that could easily sway the decisions of many recruits. They wouldn’t want to come to UH not knowing whether the guy recruiting them will be there or not.

  25. ponojr July 23, 2014 10:46 am

#23 – Who’s starting for the Crusaders? Kuhns or the lefty Sophmore (sorry, can’t remember his name)?

  26. jimmy the lock July 23, 2014 10:48 am

ST, who has the best looking uniforms?

  27. jimmy the lock July 23, 2014 10:49 am

    Rodney, “Stubified”?

Sounds like a symptom not even a male enhancement treatment can resolve. 😯

  28. Imua78 July 23, 2014 10:51 am

Sorry friend but when Dela Salle played St Louis in 2002, Maurice Drew was iffy with an ankle injury, yet still managed over 100 yards of total offence. The Dela Salle oline and dline was a tad over 225 average, yet they jumped to a 21 point lead EASILY beat St Louis, as did Long Beach Poly over Kahuku.

As for the Bishop Gorman game, come on Hawaiian, it was 28-0 at the half and 42-7 in the 3rd.
By then the BG team was sipping on their Virgin Mai Tais and planning their night out in Waikiki

I expect the same thing with SJB comes to town. Nothing against the local boys but they will be out matched like Hawaii vs Washington.

    IMUA!!!!

  29. tanman July 23, 2014 10:52 am

I hope that Norm Chow can win enough games to survive the axe this season because I can see the improvement with the quality of the recruits. I hope that he and Wynn can continue to open up the offense a little more this season. Of course, this depends on play of the OL and the designated QB and I hope that they do identify the right QB to start this year. If Schroeder started all the games last year, I wondered if we could have won more games. I think we have pretty good receivers and tight ends but I hope that they work hard to improve their catching and speed like their predecessors such as Bess, Salas, and Pilares. We also need to keep Iosefa healthy, or at least someone ready to step in and who can fill in sufficiently.

Defensively, our defensive line still looks pretty good because of Yap, Tulimasealii and others. According to the media, we have pretty good LBs and improving secondaries. I hope they practice tackles as well as improve their pursue skills… Our defense let opposing players get away far too many times last season.

For kicker, I hope Hadden finally show his full potential! Otherwise, I hope that our new kicker can step in. We may not be able to find another Elam but may be someone who can at least make 80-85% of the FG kicks, especially, need to be able to make those game winning kicks…

For punter, we still have Harding but we need a backup because he’s also our returner and receiver… May be we need to identify another returner who can take it to the house like Owens and Edwards.

Even if our offense and defense are average but have very good special teams play, we have chance… Of course, let’s hope that our offense and defense are better than average!!

    Go Rainbow Warriors!!

I am looking for at least 3 games but I absolutely do not mind more wins!! I’d like to be able to continue to watch Hawaii college football when I am older and when I am finally retired…

BTW, basketball coaches are heading in the right directions. I think giving them extension will allow them to convince good players to come to Hawaii to play. It takes more than a few years to build a program and the reputation of a coach, especially, we do not have the $ to hire already established winning coaches. Shoji would not have the success if he was dismissed for one bad year. Of course, he hardly had any bad seasons… Patience!!

  30. Papakolei-n July 23, 2014 10:56 am

#25. They did not name the starter yet but I am guessing Kuhns based on experience but I like the lefty because I think he has better pocket awareness then Kuhns! Kuhns stands in the pocket like the Statue of Liberty and against a team like SJB you are going to need to scramble JMO!

  31. ponojr July 23, 2014 11:00 am

#30 Seen the lefty in 7-7 and at Vinny’s camps. Kid has a gun. Hopefully he’s also skilled at reading the D.

  32. ALLAN July 23, 2014 11:17 am

I’VE BEEN GOING TO UHMBB SINCE 1967-68. I ONCE MENTIONED TO THE NOW-RETIRED PERSON, WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF SSC SEATING AT THE TIME, WHEN SHE ASKED ME WHAT I THOT OF GIB ARNOLD, THAT IF THE NCAA DIDN’T TRY TO SCREW UP UHBB PROGRAM, HE MIGHT BECOME THE BEST COACH UH EVER HAD. NOW, WITH THEIR MEDDLING, I DON’T KNOW.

  33. jimmy the lock July 23, 2014 11:20 am

Allan, you work for Western Union telegram? What’s with the all CAPS? 😆

  34. nutmegger July 23, 2014 11:21 am

jmor56 – I’m always missing the point according to my wife. I do appreciate what you are saying. Thank you.

In the paper there was an editorial dissing UHAD, football in particular. Somehow the financial problems are being perceived as football being the cause. A little PR is needed to explain that the loss of football would not be confined to football, but rather would result in the loss of all the athletic teams.

  35. Papakolei-n July 23, 2014 11:38 am

#28. Easily beat STL? 31-21 final! 10 point diff? Easily, i guess that is a easy win in your book but in my book DLS should have won by like at lease 4tdz and they did not so in my book we faired pretty well, and I already mentioned about MJDs ankle so you don’t need to tell me, like I did not know that! And I wish LBP played the kuhuku team from the year before because it would have been a way better game! And on my #7. Comment at the end when I said BTW STL beat BG I had the word NOT at the end but for some reason it did not post, I know BG wiped the floor with STL, but my point is that game in 2012 was not the same coaching staff as they have now and I know the Lee Brothers and staff will be way better prepared!

  36. gobows July 23, 2014 11:55 am

    20

    Exactly.

  37. gobows July 23, 2014 11:58 am

    24

That doesnt matter at all. His recruits cant make it into school. So he settles on last minute players that nobody wanted or heard from.

    Gib sucks.

  38. Tiki808 July 23, 2014 12:32 pm

I think I speak for some KIF fans as to what’s going to happen to Sean Shigematsu, off the starting lineup senior year? Just look at Gib’s players and lineup? I think I answered 37 also.

  39. papajoe2 July 23, 2014 12:36 pm

With new coaches at St, Louis, they may get off to a slow start. I think once the get the players in gear, look out!

  40. Tiki808 July 23, 2014 1:01 pm

    Kawika49: Norm Chow?

  41. jeezy33 July 23, 2014 1:22 pm

    19. The game was 21-0 early on and up 31-14 in the 4th quarter. Don’t pretend like 1 cheap touchdown late to come within 10 made the game respectable by any means. And all I said was McGrew is going to run wild versus St Louis. Jones was pretty unstoppable when you consider St Louis was ranked in the top 20.

  42. Brad July 23, 2014 1:24 pm

Is that what UH is going to wear at home this season? I know they wore that only once last year at homecoming but if so why isn’t the HZone carrying the green jerseys? Could be making more money Ben Jay as fans are getting more excited to see our boys in uniform.

  43. ai-eee-soos July 23, 2014 1:27 pm

hoooo !!! The U. of Oregon got tough academics ….. from the PAC 12 Media bash …

“… Mariota and Oregon were picked to win the Pac-12 title Wednesday in the preseason media poll, topping that chart for the fourth time in five years.

**** Mariota says he returned to enjoy the college experience. Since he’s only taking

GOLF and YOGA this fall to finish up his degree, he’ll have plenty of time. … ” ****

    .

chee …. I wonder what his major is … GOLF and YOGA ?

  44. PONO July 23, 2014 1:35 pm

Gib is way over paid for producing zero results. We finished no higher than 4th since he took the program over. We have more NCAA investigations than we do BW Tournament wins and zero legit post season (NIT or NCAA) appearances. For that he deserves a raise and the distinction of being the highest paid coach in the conference?

Some say it hurts recruiting. The next signing period isn’t until November. The guys he’s scrambling to get now don’t have scholarship offer for one reason or another so they can’t afford to be that picky. These are last minute hail mary’s. We can afford to wait a couple more months to see what the NCAA thinks of Gib before signing the dotted line.

  45. bowwar July 23, 2014 1:35 pm

Bring back the Black and the winning attitude…Time for our Warriors to be strutting again.

  46. kawika49 July 23, 2014 1:36 pm

#39- know the feeling, played under Marciel :In 67 with Taafasau, Mariboho, Nicholson.
    #40- yes

  47. jason July 23, 2014 1:55 pm

    @29
you will get your 3 wins. and chow will get the axe. finally.

  48. islandman July 23, 2014 2:12 pm

#43, Is there any requirement for student athletes as to how many courses they have to take in order to play on the football or basketball teams ?

  49. Ipu Man July 23, 2014 2:20 pm

H Zone had some nice Aloha shirts with H embroidered on them.

  50. Ipu Man July 23, 2014 2:23 pm

What H Zone needs as someone previously pointed out is munchies.
How about waffle hot dogs with the H brand?
    Maybe some “Banana Bowls…”
    🙂

  51. C-Pop July 23, 2014 2:29 pm

#43 – Mariota is a General Science major with possible focus on sports medicine or physical therapy, nice piece of his academic focus at Oregon featured on PAC-12 media days on PAC-12 network today.

  52. Kapahulu July 23, 2014 2:36 pm

From ST and the SA Online Front Page:

LAS VEGAS >> Head coach Norm Chow vowed to field an improved University of Hawaii football team this season.

“We’re going to be better,” said Chow, who spoke on Wednesday at the Mountain West Conference’s Football Media Days. “We have to be better. We’re finally at a point where we have some leadership, some veteran players.”

The Warriors were 4-20 in Chow’s first two seasons as UH head coach, including 1-11 in 2013.

“I’ve said it many times before: We’re disappointed about last year, but not embarrassed, because our guys played hard,” Chow said. “Our mantra all offseason is to be able to finish.”

Chow said the only pressure he feels is self-generated.

“I’ve been around too long to worry about pressure from other people,” said Chow, who is in his 45th season of coaching. “No one puts more pressure on themselves than the coach himself. I feel the same way now. Every year is a challenge. I can’t worry about the outside stuff.”

Defensive end Beau Yap, who is representing the Warriors at this event, supported Chow.

“He’s not the one playing, we are,” Yap said. “He takes a lot of criticism. He said he’d rather take than give it to us. Chow and his staff put together the game plan. It’s a good one. We’re the ones who have to execute it. In the end, it’s all on us.”

UH running back Joey Iosefa said: “I think he’s a great coach. He cares about the players. If we need anything, he gets it done.”

UH starts training camp on Aug. 4. The season-opener is on Aug. 30 against Washington.

  53. jimmy the lock July 23, 2014 2:46 pm

They only have 4 aloha shirts featured. They should team with Tommy Bahama, Rix, Sig Zane, Ono, Kahala, Outrigger, Billabong, Quicksilver, Reef, Reyn Spooner, Tori Richard, Manuhealii, etc. and have a plethora of selections.

  54. Inyoface July 23, 2014 2:48 pm

Auburn wasn’t even ranked close to the top 25 preseason poll last year and played in the National Championship game. Anything can happen in college football.

MWC football: Norm Chow says he’s not feeling pressure

  56. hwnstyll July 23, 2014 2:54 pm

when is the SJB and STL game!!!

  57. C-Pop July 23, 2014 2:55 pm

No denying the great HS tradition of Della Salle, LB Poly over time, Bishop Gorman also dominant in Nevada. St Louis HS with Cal Lee/Arceneaux-Mariota team, Kahuku with Siuaki Livai & Reggie Torres, & Punahou with Kale Ane hold their own against schools from the continent, every program can point to certain teams which they felt were the “Best” and next best etc. Punahou has played big games in Calif & Wash and won.

  58. jimmy the lock July 23, 2014 3:01 pm

He may say he is not feeling pressure but his sideline antics and body language sure shows signs of frustration. I’m no expert in behavioral analysis or psychosocial forensics but it sure looks like frustration to me.

Hopefully this can be a turn the corner season for Coach Chow and the Rainbow Warriors. Smiles all around would be pleasant.

Has there been any more news regarding those who were previously mentioned as being interested in the possibility of going to UH? Are they still interested and in the process or have they turned their attention elsewhere?

  64. d1shima July 23, 2014 5:47 pm

    Great Evening All!

    Getting closer…

    GO WARRIORS!

  65. d1shima July 23, 2014 5:49 pm

    Imua 78,

If they were “sipping maitais” they dropped ’em when the DC started swearing at the defense in the 4th qtr and they couldn’t stop the Crusaders from scoring.

SJB plays St. Louis on August 23rd.
I hope St.L wins as Mater Dei, my Alma Mater got spanked twice by SJB last year
I just appreciate good HS football and I hope I can see the game streamed somewhere as I will be 9 hours East in Zurich for my niece’s wedding
Am also going to visit my 1961 Army post in Karlsruhe, Germany Was there in the Berlin Crisis for 6 months

  68. C-Pop July 23, 2014 6:23 pm

Saint John Bosco beat Della Salle for Calif State title 2013, SJB lost many star players to Div 1 schools. Word on street is Saints are down in overall talent, they will need the best possible coaching to represent islands.

  69. oneseason July 23, 2014 8:14 pm

67 … thank you for the link … “We’re going to be better,” said Chow, who spoke on Wednesday at the Mountain West Conference’s Football Media Days. “We have to be better. We’re finally at a point where we have some leadership, some veteran players.” … I don’t sense a lot of ownership from the coach on the win-loss record. But leadership means different things to different people.

  70. kapakahi July 23, 2014 8:27 pm

    #68,

Saint Louis plays SJB on Friday, August 22 (not 23) @ Aloha Stadium.

  71. d1shima July 23, 2014 8:42 pm

    What is UH thinking?

Highest paid coach in the conference. Hmmm, what a joke!
