All here

By last count, all the returning Warriors are enrolled in Summer Session II, which begins today.

With a sizable donation from the Waterhouse Foundation, Na Koa club is paying for the returning Warriors to attend both summer sessions (as well as incoming freshmen to attend the two bridge-program classes). The summer plan serves two purposes: 1) Players can accumulate credits to accelerate the path to degrees, and 2) players can train together in Hawaii.

Which brings us to the football team’s one stipulation: To receive a scholarship this summer, a player must live most of the time in Hawaii. (Players taking on-line classes are excused for short breaks to visit their families on the mainland.)

  4. tom-warriornation July 7, 2014 7:25 am

GO WARRIORS! Can we all donate so that our boys don’t have to live in the dance studios; didn’t ST say it was to save $40,000 & aren’t the dorms empty now? What are other schools that have our players live in dance studios?

  5. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 7:25 am

Whitney, that’s a damn good breakfast, I’m lucky I get a poptart from Mrs. Boola…

  6. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 7:29 am

    I love Pop Tarts.
    The regular ones.
The frosted Pop Tarts are sort of gross.

  9. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 7:36 am

ST..when I was growing up, Poptarts are what I though only super-rich people eat for breakfast…I found out later, they are mainly for really lazy people like myself.

  10. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 8:03 am

4..All the players from flash-dance university.

  11. NorthShoreFan July 7, 2014 8:03 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    finish them credits…make life easier…student athletes..IMUA!

    off topic……
my patnah made some aku poke this past weekend…aku, cilantro, sesame leaves, sesame seed & oil, little furikake and…….walnuts!??!?..anyhoo, she said they gang at the harbor when wipe the container clean!???? when she told me the recipe I went…HUH!?!?!??? told her the guys at the harbor must be starving…walnuts?…I guess the next will be mac nuts..we get plenty fresh ones off the tree.

  12. Old School Dave July 7, 2014 8:29 am

Agree with Tom (#4). I’d be willing to donate what I can to help put the players in some decent living accommodations during fall camp. Sad that it has to come to this.

  13. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 8:57 am

The MWC had three players named Shaq last year.
And, of course, every 10th boy is named Jordan.
Wonder when we’ll see the wave of high school players named Lebron?

  14. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 8:58 am

    Boola:
In the office, next to the granola bars that nobody eats, the snack machine sells Pop Tarts.

  15. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:00 am

You know how it goes. We write about healthful foods. We talk about healthful foods. But we lose our minds when the pizza is delivered. It’s sort of like the Pavlov’s-dog effect that the ice-cream-truck music has on all of us.

  16. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:01 am

The point of today’s post is that UH has 100 percent participation this summer.

  17. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 9:07 am

If we had a machine that sold poptarts, they would have to refill it 2 to 3 times, a week. Damn, thats like having a really cute women working in the next door office—OK, I really like poptarts.

  18. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 9:17 am

Informal count, and warning, I went to public school, so anything pass, hands and toes is iffy.

    Florida 27 Players
    California 22 Players,
    Texas 21 Players
    Georgia 15 Players

  19. Old School Dave July 7, 2014 9:19 am

On dieting, I remember back in the day vowing to start start a healthier diet, only to have it shot down when someone would often bring a pizza and a bucket of chicken and potatoes from Chico’s (at the bottom of St Louis Heights). When I finally did move away from St Louis Heights, my diet did improve, somewhat šŸ™‚

  20. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:20 am

That’s a lot of people going a long way for a football camp.

  21. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:21 am

    Old School Dave:
There you go again. Bringing up food that makes me drool on my keyboard.

  22. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 9:21 am

My fav names on the above list are: Rayray, Soso, and Mook.

  23. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 9:24 am

19–Old School Dave—Chicos was da bomb in the day!! I remember tagging along with some of our old neighbors back in the day, and getting dwight holidays autograph–go to town, fried chicked, pizza, and fab 5 autograph–only the best day in my life!!

  24. Old School Dave July 7, 2014 9:32 am

Stephen & Boola: I would have to say that to this day, I have not had chicken or potato wedges like the ones at Chico’s. Living up on St Louis Heights, I always remember making that turn onto St Louis Drive from Waialae and asking myself, “Hmmmm…pizza and chicken.” I’ve heard that Chicken Delite (sp?) was also pretty good, but I don’t think I ever ate there (down near Keeaumoku, I think). I remember the commercial jingle, “Don’t cook tonight. Order Chicken Delite.”

  25. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 9:33 am

Old School Dave…I did like me some Magoos Pizza back in the day…..

  26. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:38 am

    Boola:
    Rayray is a cool name.
Technically, UH has an Iosefa Iosefa.

  27. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2014 9:40 am

Isn’t there a Magoos near the McDonald’s on South King?
By the way, that’s the most confusing drive-through McDonald’s. It appears you have to enter the preceding lot to get to the drive-through lane. (Hey, with 6:45 a.m. practices, I’m in no mood to be confused when I’m making coffee/hot chocolate runs.)

  28. Old School Dave July 7, 2014 9:43 am

ST: I think you’re right. Magoos has a lunch wagon in the parking lot of the 76 station right before McDs on South King. Yeah, gotta be careful entering that lot.

Kind of out of the way for me, but Big Kahuna’s Pizza, on Puuloa was good. I had the Kalua pork pizza. Not recommended if you have an annual physical exam and blood test coming up soon.

  31. Buffoman July 7, 2014 9:58 am

The Boston North End piazza in Kaneohe is the best as of now for me. The crust on that piazza cannot be matched. Even the new Brick Oven across the way by my standards, does not match. Interestingly the Kaneohe Boston seems to have a better crust than the one in Kaimuki.

Anna Bananas back in the day had the best pizza for the “stoners” as one could attest to. Chicks was the best for their chicken and fries.

  32. Buffoman July 7, 2014 10:00 am

Chicos sorry spell check “corrected” incorrectly again.

  33. SteveM July 7, 2014 10:10 am

    Good morning everyone!

I like Na Koa paying for the summer sessions. The money is directly supporting the players and helping toward the ultimate goal of graduating. The team building is great too.

Speaking of team building, I think most past and present military people can see the reasons (besides financial) of the staying in the dance studios for a few weeks. Staying a week at military facilities for training is an off-shoot of this, I think.

    CHICO’S PIZZA!!!!!

  34. Down with... July 7, 2014 10:15 am

#29 Koakane-that’s what i was saying a few blogs ago, they need to think when scheduling some of these things. I understand they don’t have total control but just makes no sense sometimes…Oh well…Go Bows!

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid July 7, 2014 10:38 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! šŸ˜‰

    100% participation? Awesome!

Chicos and Magoos – both had great pizza and chicken back in the day… such good memories.

  36. obachan July 7, 2014 10:44 am

Brings back memories of Ye Ole Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and pitchers of cold root beer in Kaneohe when I was growing up.

  37. boolakanaka July 7, 2014 11:04 am

36…There was a Shakeys in Aiea, and there was this one bruddha like 5-6 years older than us, that worked there…and I thought he was a God, seriously, I thought he was Lono.

He use to sometimes tell us intermediate kids from the neighborhood, especially in the summer, to come in the middle of the afternoon, and he would hook-us-up with large pepperoni pizzas for free—damn that bruddha was Lono!!

  38. tom-warriornation July 7, 2014 11:41 am

    A-House & all:
For the road game at Rice: Tickets will be $15-20 each for great seats behind our team (45 to 35 yard line) about 10-20 rows up for better viewing; will post the details here when I get them. Again about 100 Texas locals will be there; so everyone come join them & make some noise for our boys!

Rice was the conference champion last year and they got most of their players back so our team needs your support at this game!

  39. kapakahi July 7, 2014 12:26 pm

    ST,

What’s the update on JC CB transfers Cesar Fermin (Moorpark JC) and Jamal Mayo (Laney JC)?

  40. st. anthony trojan July 7, 2014 12:42 pm

Mahalo to Waterhouse foundation…for all the support all these years….remember back in the 50’s…they were in the photo business..they still around yet ??

  41. bowwar July 7, 2014 12:53 pm

Chicos was the absolute best…The Chicken and large ranch-style fries were fabulous. I also remember them serving pitchers of wine-coolers. The pizza wasn’t bad either…I really was bummed when Chicos closed in the 70s.

#31: I still think Pizza Bobs in Haleiwa makes the best pizza on the island…Everytime I take out of state guests there, they all say the same thing. IMHO, Boston Northend in Kaneohe was better when it first came out and it really made its money on its “oversized” pizzas versus taste. Yes, the Brickoven is more hype and expensive than being good…The Shakey’s in Waipahu is guud, but it’s a looong way from Kaneohe.

  42. bowwar July 7, 2014 12:55 pm

Dunno how much he really did, but Coach Mack was instrumental in the summer school classes for the football players…I really think Mack took a genuine interest in the future of the athletes beyond football.

  43. Buffoman July 7, 2014 1:03 pm

#41 I guess it’s like Kin Wah or Pake’s. I personally like Kin Wah but my friends who also reside on the Windward side swear by Pake’s.

It’s personal taste. No one is wrong, it’s what makes one’s pallet happy. I liked Boston’s when it was near Yamashiro’s and strangely I like them better now.

  44. Don Weir July 7, 2014 1:23 pm

The Alex Waterhouse Trust funds 5 entities; UH is one of the 5 and so is Palama Settlement.

I was remiss yesterday in not extending an invitation to the San Diego Letterwinners Breakfast/Brunch to members of the print, radio, and tv media.

Chico’s! Thanks for the link, Old School Dave. Saw a photo of the Chico’s menu. I spent a lot of time there in the late ’60s and early ’70s, and the broasted chicken and potato wedges were the best … ever. Even worked there one summer in the kitchen and delivery as I knew the daughter of one of the owners. Fun fact: She’s married to a former UH assistant football coach who is now with June at SMU.

A classmate of mine in high school (not Al) worked at “Stan the Man” pizza on King street near McCulley. He made pizza and did delivery. Interesting stories on deliveries and he claimed to be the first Japanese pizza maker in Hawaii. I dunno, but after high school he went to work at Chico’s as a pizza maker.

Went to try his new place out of curiousity. Now I remember the decisions I had to make back then- buy a Chico’s pizza for myself or 9 W&M burgers on 9th ave @ 30 cents… same price.

Makes me think of original Tony Roma’s on Kuhio– one of the managers back in the day, Bobby T., or otherwise known as the BBF of Barry O. Those were the first ribs I had of this variety—ono!

Hey Steve, good to see you again. It was a pleasure meeting your wife, but it was kinda scary how many connections I found out we have through families and friends. Take care.

SteveM, I liked Mama Mia’s Pizza best at So. King & McCully. The Italian guys who owned it & made the pizzas were good lookers. They also made authentic East Coast pizza.

Great to hear that there’s 100% participation this summer. The guys need all that time practicing together. It showed in previous year’s teams. And good for the guys to get through school.

    Night!
