By last count, all the returning Warriors are enrolled in Summer Session II, which begins today.
With a sizable donation from the Waterhouse Foundation, Na Koa club is paying for the returning Warriors to attend both summer sessions (as well as incoming freshmen to attend the two bridge-program classes). The summer plan serves two purposes: 1) Players can accumulate credits to accelerate the path to degrees, and 2) players can train together in Hawaii.
Which brings us to the football team’s one stipulation: To receive a scholarship this summer, a player must live most of the time in Hawaii. (Players taking on-line classes are excused for short breaks to visit their families on the mainland.)

Stephen & Boola: I would have to say that to this day, I have not had chicken or potato wedges like the ones at Chico’s. Living up on St Louis Heights, I always remember making that turn onto St Louis Drive from Waialae and asking myself, “Hmmmm…pizza and chicken.” I’ve heard that Chicken Delite (sp?) was also pretty good, but I don’t think I ever ate there (down near Keeaumoku, I think). I remember the commercial jingle, “Don’t cook tonight. Order Chicken Delite.”

Kind of out of the way for me, but Big Kahuna’s Pizza, on Puuloa was good. I had the Kalua pork pizza. Not recommended if you have an annual physical exam and blood test coming up soon.
The Boston North End piazza in Kaneohe is the best as of now for me. The crust on that piazza cannot be matched. Even the new Brick Oven across the way by my standards, does not match. Interestingly the Kaneohe Boston seems to have a better crust than the one in Kaimuki.
Anna Bananas back in the day had the best pizza for the “stoners” as one could attest to. Chicks was the best for their chicken and fries.

I like Na Koa paying for the summer sessions. The money is directly supporting the players and helping toward the ultimate goal of graduating. The team building is great too.
Speaking of team building, I think most past and present military people can see the reasons (besides financial) of the staying in the dance studios for a few weeks. Staying a week at military facilities for training is an off-shoot of this, I think.

Chicos and Magoos – both had great pizza and chicken back in the day… such good memories.
Brings back memories of Ye Ole Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and pitchers of cold root beer in Kaneohe when I was growing up.
36…There was a Shakeys in Aiea, and there was this one bruddha like 5-6 years older than us, that worked there…and I thought he was a God, seriously, I thought he was Lono.
He use to sometimes tell us intermediate kids from the neighborhood, especially in the summer, to come in the middle of the afternoon, and he would hook-us-up with large pepperoni pizzas for free—damn that bruddha was Lono!!

For the road game at Rice: Tickets will be $15-20 each for great seats behind our team (45 to 35 yard line) about 10-20 rows up for better viewing; will post the details here when I get them. Again about 100 Texas locals will be there; so everyone come join them & make some noise for our boys!
Rice was the conference champion last year and they got most of their players back so our team needs your support at this game!

Chicos was the absolute best…The Chicken and large ranch-style fries were fabulous. I also remember them serving pitchers of wine-coolers. The pizza wasn’t bad either…I really was bummed when Chicos closed in the 70s.
#31: I still think Pizza Bobs in Haleiwa makes the best pizza on the island…Everytime I take out of state guests there, they all say the same thing. IMHO, Boston Northend in Kaneohe was better when it first came out and it really made its money on its “oversized” pizzas versus taste. Yes, the Brickoven is more hype and expensive than being good…The Shakey’s in Waipahu is guud, but it’s a looong way from Kaneohe.
Dunno how much he really did, but Coach Mack was instrumental in the summer school classes for the football players…I really think Mack took a genuine interest in the future of the athletes beyond football.
#41 I guess it’s like Kin Wah or Pake’s. I personally like Kin Wah but my friends who also reside on the Windward side swear by Pake’s.
It’s personal taste. No one is wrong, it’s what makes one’s pallet happy. I liked Boston’s when it was near Yamashiro’s and strangely I like them better now.

Chico’s! Thanks for the link, Old School Dave. Saw a photo of the Chico’s menu. I spent a lot of time there in the late ’60s and early ’70s, and the broasted chicken and potato wedges were the best … ever. Even worked there one summer in the kitchen and delivery as I knew the daughter of one of the owners. Fun fact: She’s married to a former UH assistant football coach who is now with June at SMU.
A classmate of mine in high school (not Al) worked at “Stan the Man” pizza on King street near McCulley. He made pizza and did delivery. Interesting stories on deliveries and he claimed to be the first Japanese pizza maker in Hawaii. I dunno, but after high school he went to work at Chico’s as a pizza maker.
Went to try his new place out of curiousity. Now I remember the decisions I had to make back then- buy a Chico’s pizza for myself or 9 W&M burgers on 9th ave @ 30 cents… same price.
Makes me think of original Tony Roma’s on Kuhio– one of the managers back in the day, Bobby T., or otherwise known as the BBF of Barry O. Those were the first ribs I had of this variety—ono!

SteveM, I liked Mama Mia’s Pizza best at So. King & McCully. The Italian guys who owned it & made the pizzas were good lookers. They also made authentic East Coast pizza.
Great to hear that there’s 100% participation this summer. The guys need all that time practicing together. It showed in previous year’s teams. And good for the guys to get through school.
