Lewis says he’ll be starting off on defense. But, you know, things can always change, and he’s probably a possibility at running back.
Jackson, Mulanga, Nelson, Patterson, Patton, Poti, Tavai…..all flying in this weekend.
One week, Mageo had really long hair.
The next week, I didn’t recognize him.
Ka’au now being moved from DL to OL?
Mulanga comes in tomorrow, I think. He’s traveling on a family member’s buddy pass.

Athough he is a LS, Ka’au otherwise never played OL for Kapalama Warriors…..but then again neither did Kory Rasmussen. However, did play some TE in the red zone.

The new recruits do pass the eye test by looking like they are in shape, I’m excited to see them kick okole on the grid iron.

Anybody read the paper this morning? Is going from a 50,000 seat stadium to a 35,000 or 40,000 seat stadium jeopardizing the future of our D1 program? If you can beat the other team, is the size of the stadium really that important?
Yes, the size of the stadium is important. Dave is exactly right when he says that settling for a 35K seat stadium is waving the white flag. Just because the team is losing and attendance is down at the moment doesn’t mean it will always be that way.

People might forget that……the Stan Sheriff Center almost got reduced to 7,000 seats…..instead of 10,000 seats.

BTW, great post on the sports blog concerning attendance and it’s relationship to a winning record. Building a 30,000 seat stadium is a brain dead idea.

The 30K seat stadium is Neil’s idea……which the Stadium Authority was “asked” to run with……which BJ decided to have an “independent” consultant look at.
What about the Blaisdell/McKinley HS site for a stadium? MHS was mentioned in the report as a possible site by one of the stakeholders. If more parking and train station can be feasibly worked out, it seems like a possible site.

If the new stadium were to be self-financed like the new Husky Stadium, then I wouldn’t be so negative on the consultant’s proposal. Self-financed would make it much more likely folks sharpened their pencils and had a solid financial rationale for the small stadium size. As it is, it just looks like an attempt to come up with a construction project with less sticker shock, regardless of what would make sense for a 10-2 class Rainbow Warrior football team.
Two words…..Size Matters (but only if you want to stay in D1).
There are two studies floating around here — BJ’s stadium built for and controlled by the UH (preferably on UH land–like the quarry 🙂 ) and a new ALOHA stadium in Halawa.
As I opined before, build a smaller stadium for UH in Manoa. While UH football is a major user of Aloha Stadium, they only use it 6-8 days a year. Should major decisions on Aloha Stadium be based on a client to uses it only 6-8 times a year, much less their won-lost record? There’s high school and other users of Aloha Stadium besides the swap meet.
Build UH stadium while UH is using Aloha stadium and debates about size/funding/where can continue. When UH stadium is done (probably in 10 years if lucky), temporarily shift as many other activities there as possible while the NEW Aloha Stadium is built… no guess on how many years from me. 😐

If they build a new stadium, going smaller isn’t the answer. They need to form a partnership with a developer who can build a slightly bigger stadium in exchange for surrounding commercial development. If I read the article correctly the other day, doesn’t the C&C of Honolulu also have some role in the deeds for Aloha Stadium’s current parcel?

It’s fine to have a new stadium that seats 50,000 if anyone can come up with a plan on how to fill it up since simply winning does not seem to be the answer and our population base doesn’t have much more room to grow.
Develop a new stadium on the present Ala Wai golf course,there is enough space for a stadium, parking structure, tailgate open space, and commercial and hotel development. Traffic problems, we have to live with it we live on an island with limited open. We have no choice until the rail reaches Waikiki and UH as an additional leg.
A partnership with private enterprise in exchange for developmental rights to commercial development including hotel and condos.
#34 has an excellent point. Winning helps but it does not guarantee a full stadium with each appearance.
The new generation of students do not appear to embrace athletics as the previous generations did. Whether football, basketball or whatever the majority of fans in seats are not from the student body.
How to fill up 50,000 seats?
1) sell tickets for $25 before game starts and $15 at half time for any unused seats
2) sell hot dogs and soda at Costco prices. Up charge anything/everything else.
3) provide free transportation from every military base on Oahu
4) offer high school students discounted tickets for groups of ten or more
5) have a raffle at each game, winner awarded at half time – prize can be worthless, like a painted coconut – but something that can be photographed and run in the paper.
6) similar to the flag wavers during political campaigns, have advertising with a picture of a season ticket holder with the by-line – “I support UH Football” – people tend to support things their friends support.
oops, hope no season ticket holders get angry. Should also give a discount to season ticket holders for every year they renew. A 20 year loyal fan should pay less than a newbie.
Here’s an idea to break into the Japan market: Get together with JAL ANA, or JTB along with one of the networks in Japan such as Fuji, TBS, NHK and show a UH game each week. Hold a contest weekly basis during the season that requires contestants to watch the games and answer a question, with the prize being an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. You could get celebrities such as Konishiki and Musashimaru (both former Hawaii High School Footballers) to educate the population about American Football (as it’s called there) and promote the weekly broadcasts and contest.
Our new A.D. has had this program in full retrograde since he walked in the door. Most A.D.s are hired to manage as well as provide vision for the program as well as execute that vision. 30K stadium? Pay per view that directly challenges and compromises attendance at the stadium? Higher ticket prices that insures that pay per view will be used which still reduces attendance? Stupid. Why not reduce ticket prices, put many more butts in the seats …make payperview less attractive as a result cheaper tickets, yet maintaining revenue from both streams, attendance and payperview. Of course this all is contingent on a football team that can win its share. This is exactly the situation 20 plus years ago…cheaper tickets and yet we still televised the games. Attendace was at an all time high in those days. Also, my understanding of the rent on Aloha stadium which UH is mandated to pay….can go away with one stroke of the Governor’s pen! Yet he doesn’t! Big fan—that.

Build a 30,000 stadium and you’ll get about 10,000 to 15,000 crowds when the program has a losing season like these past two under Chow. Might as well build a 25,000 capacity wooden stadium with bleachers at the old Honolulu Stadium site.
Bring back Chunky’s Drive Inn, too.

In the early 1980s it was THE place to be on a Saturday night. A combination of the 7:30 start time, the lower drinking age, tailgating until the Police chased us out at 3:00 a.m. instead of having to leave right after the game, no computers/hand-held devices, and maybe five games on TV during the day instead of the 30 or whatever there is now. There has to be something that will work now.

using the field 6-8 times a season does not make sense – use the field multiple times during a month for whatever
line the exterior with commercial shops including restaurant(s) open to the general public every day except Sundays unless there is function such as wedding reception – build a multi-level commercial space adjacent to the stadium and relocate the H-Shop there – other BCS campuses combine the sports outlet with their bookstore
what’s wrong with placing the new stadium over H1 and restrict parking entrances/exists to the “makai-side” of H1
extend the existing lower campus parking structure over the tennis courts {maybe even enclosing them} to allow year round use without concern for rainy weather

The thing I’ve always wondered about your idea of building over H-1 is how much it would increase the cost to build a stadium that way. Anything is possible but could just the foundation cost $200 million even before building a stadium (Kapakahi, any rough idea)? Agree that it has to be multiple use but is there anyone with the vision to do it?
Hope with all these big guys coming in, we’ll have a solid 2-deep depth chart.
ralph…as you know i’ve been pushing the ala wai along for years now.
the other location i’ve also been hinting at includes; varsity theater, church of the crossroads, pucks alley, the adjacent corner block of beretania/university ave, moiilili field and cvs drugs triangle, and the old stadium park/bowl-o- drome. this combination of square footage has two land masses to choose from for the new stadium with the rest dedicated to parking, comfort stations, retail spaces, classes and multi-function facilities.
as far as neil and the stadium…well, to me he has played his last card.
while campaigning four years ago he promised to hand the stadium over to the university.
now, he wants a 30k seater.
he hasn’t lived hawaii all these years to run the state, that he is totally of touch with, effectively.

A-House — as I mentioned before, the stadium does not have to be over the freeway. In fact, the freeway stays as is except for a new offramp and onramp.

In this case, no need to go over the freeway… go from the Dole street edge of the quarry to mid-way to the freeway. Build the stadium on top of that. The parking structure, SSC, pool, the Les and Ching field are untouched.
I suppose if we can build the elevated H3 freeway, airport viaduct, and elevated rail tracks, we have the technology to build a small stadium on a “lid”.

…but I agree the Ala Wai golf course and the Moiliili locations described by Al’s #55 are all viable locations… more psychologically acceptable than a lid over the quarry, I suppose 😐
