Fehoko faces challenge

Whitley Fehoko’s football career is apparently over.
Fehoko, who hoped to play for the Warriors this fall, was diagnosed with an irregular heart beat.
He is likely to undergo a procedure to correct a faulty heart valve.

Bryant Moniz finally was able to get some significant reps at quarterback during yesterday’s practice.
Moniz, a Leilehua graduate who attended Fresno City College for a season, made several strong throws during team drills.
“I was nervous just getting back to game speed,” Moniz said.
Greg Alexander, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin get the majority of the snaps in spring practice. Moniz and Steele Jantz often are used on the scout team — as safeties.
Moniz said he is motivated by “the love of the game. It keeps me going. I love it, even playing safety on scout team. I have a lot of fun doing that.”
To be sure, Moniz is making a commitment. He is not on scholarship. He has a 10-month-old daughter, Cali. And he commutes daily from his home in Wahiawa.
“It’s tough, but I figure it will pay off one day,” Moniz said.

Happy birthday to Jon Nielsen.

Bryant Moniz threw some of the better balls at practice yesterday.

He could be a great story sooner than later.

Best wishes to Whitley Fehoko and family. May he be successful at whatever he decides to in his life.

Congrats to the BaseBows and the Wahine on their wins today. Especially the Wahine and Stephanie Ricketts. Can’t imagine going that long and being successful in both games.

  15. Kekoa April 5, 2009 2:28 am

Rob25 ~ I know you were very concerned about Koakane getting home safely. I am happy to report that he did in fact make it home safely. Smooth ride all the way. No accidents, incidents or hostages taken.

Pride, thanks for setting us up in ‘your’ club. Stretch & Powder Puff along with Hi-Flyer, James, Rob25, and A-joe helped to light up the Karaoke screen.

Actually, good thing Whitley had a good football physical and the heart condition was detected! While it may be a disappointment as a player, at least now he will have a better chance for a lifetime of good health!

  18. Kekoa April 5, 2009 2:41 am

Yes Liz, and I agree with you on that point. Good Luck to this young man as he strives to bring good health into his life.

  19. Garret April 5, 2009 4:21 am

Best wishes to Whitley Fehoko. I hope that he can have a healthy life and won’t miss football too much.

  20. Garret April 5, 2009 4:23 am

I’m glad that Bryant Moniz got some reps and did well. Being a walk-on at a very crowded position, that will get extremely crowded when 3 scholarship freshmen join the team this summer, makes these Spring Practices crucial for him. The odds are against him but his commitment and love for the game will insure he tries his best…

  21. wafan April 5, 2009 5:13 am

A peaceful and fulfilling Sunday morning everyone!

  22. wafan April 5, 2009 5:15 am

    Whitley Fehoko,

    Bryant Moniz.
good job at yesterday’s practice. Do what you enjoy doing. Find a way to make money at it. Maybe you get a fball career. get your degree 1st.

  26. wafan April 5, 2009 5:44 am

This record can be broken by any real Tsai-ko.

A woman, using chopsticks, consumed her 1.2 pound Thanksgiving meal in 13 minutes.

What. Was she using only one chopstick? Here is the link:

    http://urdb.org/Content/RecordDetail.aspx?id=293

I know we could set new world records at every KK and CC!

  27. bighilofan2 April 5, 2009 5:52 am

    koakane
belated happy birthday to you my friend.
glad you and da gang had a great evening.

    good morning.
that “record” must be fo da small peeps.

in a contest, wit green bottles on da line,
i know several peeps here who can do dat deal
    in 2 minutes witout burping.

  29. wafan April 5, 2009 6:57 am

    bhf2 . . .

I think at the next KK or cc I get to attend I will bring a stop watch and notepad to record some of the new Universal World Records being set. We may need a scale to weigh the food before consumption. That will be the one major setback to the entire thing. I certainly do not want my hand bitten in the feeding frenzy.

The drinks will be a lot easier. But, I do not volunteer to sit close enough to find evidence of burps. Ewwww.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  30. Pauoa Boy April 5, 2009 7:05 am

    Alojah Kakahiakaz Gang…

Dang, was hoping I would see Whitley on the roster, but shoot take care of yourself buleh. Get well!

  31. Pauoa Boy April 5, 2009 7:15 am

My thoughts from the article today…

Inoke Funaki – Heard he’s doing well learning the nuances that come with the running back position. I know he is one of those game speed types that is very deceptive and can wreak havoc in the open field. Cannot wait to see it all come together good luck.

Linebackers – Good to see Brashton and the boys get that tough love nastiness to them. I feel sorry for the sorry arse QB, RB, or WR coming across the middle and getting the hammer dropped on em this year. A few hearts will definitely be broken and maybe a few bones…OUCH! Brashton, R. J., Blaze, Marc, Paipai, and the rest of the boys going produce planny tunderous hits this year and we definitely going hear “Da Crackle In Da Sky”

Greg Salas and Kealoha “Pretty Boy” Pilares – The both of you as slot receivers, I can envision being a dominating duo. I envision both of you being All-WAC performers and hope you both stay in good health and injury free!

Billy Ray Stutz – Been hearing great things about this guy. Would be awesome to see him crack the starting rotation as a Freshman. Can envision him being the next big time receiver for us…Au’ryte.

  32. bighilofan2 April 5, 2009 7:41 am

    wafan,

you going need one ah dem high speed camera to spy all da akshun

13 minutes is fo girls, and i seen summa our girls. 13 minutes?
pfttt… as one good slurp. 😀

  33. wafan April 5, 2009 7:56 am

    bhf2 . . .

Not only a high speed camera but a wide-angle lens, too! I wonder where I could find a splash guard for the equipment.

The real problem will be weighing the food before the slurp. Are you willing to tell a true-blue Tsai-ko to wait while his, or worse, her food is being weighed? Are you kidding me? That would be a suicide mission.

  34. wafan April 5, 2009 8:00 am

TIme to get ready for lunch! Yum. Maybe go to Norma’s Burgers for lunch.

Koakane . . . when you visit the area ask your buddies to take you to Norma’s with the outside seating, or the Chinese Buffet across from Walmart, or Red Robin, or Puerto Vallarta. The only downside is even after the Chinese Buffet you will get hungry again — in two hours. HA!

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid April 5, 2009 8:01 am

    Good morning all!

Howzit bhf2! Hows you been, Hawaiian?

Prayers for Whitley and his family. Thank God they caught it in time.

Nice news about Moniz. he’s a terrific QB, and should really build the competition at that spot.

  36. Kekoa (iPhone) April 5, 2009 8:02 am

    PB ~

I just seen all these guys you mentioned and a few more you didn’t, 24 hrs ago. I’m still excited at the many “circus” catches and YAC I witnessed. The subtle reminders from our resident enforcers to be very wary when crossing their turf. The coaches who are fine tuning them for battle in the trenches. But what was most impressive to me was Alexander the Great. The poise, confidence, velocity and accuracy
of his passing. The feeling that he really understands his role and is working hard to perfect
it. On several plays, he was able to ‘look off’ the defenders to one side, and then fire a bullet across the field to a streaking Greg Salas or Billy Ray…

    Is it September yet?!

  37. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 8:42 am

First, great article by ST, he hits the bullseye many times.

Second, gotta love Bryant Moniz and he is spot on, it will payoff for him in the future–best wishes Mr Moniz.

Lastly, Inoke has already shown he has a huge heart and can take a big D!A whack, he just needs to stay healthy, enjoy his senior year and his contributions will follow….everyone is rooting for this Northshore warrior.

  38. d1島 April 5, 2009 8:49 am

Terrific time at the BaseBow games last night. Too bad the Good Guys couldn’t pull thru in the 2nd game, too. Hope J. Alexander can work thru the bugaboos real soon and return to form.
Like Coach says, lillo bit bettah execution and can take this series and move on to the next…

  41. d1島 April 5, 2009 8:58 am

Nice to read that the DH was a sell-out; good to see the excitement coming back to Murakami Stadium.
Like Kazz says, tix going start being a hot commodity again. 🙂

  42. Momo April 5, 2009 9:07 am

Too bad we could not sweep the bbball game. We will get them foday for a win for the series AND A GOOD START FOR THE WAC. The girls sure did good yesterday. Have a good day. Will be golfing at Waikele later today for a late start…

  43. jm2375 April 5, 2009 9:08 am

Off-topic – did anyone see the Guitar Hero commercial yesterday with Bobby Knight and Coach K? Who were the other 2? Wonder how much those guys got paid…:hmmmmm

  44. A-House April 5, 2009 9:14 am

Congratulations to the Wahine Softball team for its double header sweep of Fresno St in Fresno!!!

Thank you to the 3,352 fans who went to Murakami Stadium to support the Bows!!!

  45. Rob25 April 5, 2009 9:14 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!

It was watching the BaseBows yesterday. That comeback in the first game was thrilling. They came close in the second game, but it’s a good lesson for them to learn that they can’t always rely on making late inning comebacks.

Apparently, there are a number of NFA’s on the UH campus. There was this group of students sitting in the first row heckling the Spartans. He was pretty funny, but then they got a little colorful, no swearing, just a little gross trying to get in their heads, and someone from the stadium staff told them they had to leave since those weren’t the seats that they paid for.

OK off to try and get some house chores done before I head off to the final game in the series! My poor kids haven’t seen much of me this weekend…I don’t think that they really mind.

  46. Rob25 April 5, 2009 9:16 am

    🙄

It was GREAT watching the BaseBows yesterday!

  47. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 9:23 am

what I appreciate about this years bsb bows is they are doing it together. We neither have a power pitcher nor a batting order that rains in hits.
Still, they scrap, fall down, screw-up and pick themselves up again and deliver a kick to their opponents groin.

Trap is a solid pitching coach that plays small ball but that is only a template not neccessarily a result.

The type of baseball the bowz are playing is good stuff for youth league coaches and kids to see.

Fundamentals that work if you keep executing:
    pitchers with control and hitting their spots, keeping the ball low and away to induce grounders for your infield to make a play;
hitters being patient and going with the ball and running smart on the basepaths.

Reduce your mistakes, stay close and hang in the game for a chance to win late.

Sounding almost like Tiger Woods on the diamond?

  48. Pauoa Boy April 5, 2009 9:24 am

    Kekoa,

Howzit, yup I think last year was a learning year for all the boys but now that the pieces is fitting in nicely and everybody getting comfortable with their roles in the offense, going be dangerous once again. I think Greg Alexander is in for a huge year and has put forth the work and effort into becoming the next great QB for us. I know he and Coach Rolo work relentlessly watching film and working on his release, etc… I’m sure now that he has more confidence knowing the offense, his receivers, and a more focused OLine, he can only breathe success this year. Plus he get Inoke in the backfield in case something break down, just give it to the “Turbo Tongan” and watch him run all over the defense…

  49. Rob25 April 5, 2009 9:40 am

Oh and one comment about my observations at practice…

I like what I see from Moniz. He got some reps and threw some nice catchable balls. I think that he may be someone to watch in the future. All of the QBs looked better, but they were getting better protection which clearly made a difference.

Pilares was looking good at slot and making some acrobatic catches! With, Pilares and Salas in the slot position, other teams better watch out because both have good hands and can gain some yards after the catch.

  50. d1島 April 5, 2009 9:40 am

    warriorfanny,

Agree wicchu. Fans are getting excited and like Trap now ’cause the team is winning. However, those wins are coming at home and pretty much at or close to sea level on the road.
I hope the bats continue to come to life more as they head off to “football score” ball parks on the road.
Many of those hits to the OF turned into outstanding catches by the Sproutin’s RF but will prolly going go yard in light air and altitude so the prospects look good. Bows just gotta support their pitchers as the WAC season moves on.

  51. d1島 April 5, 2009 9:43 am

    Howzit Rob25.

Glad you seem to have survived the visit to pride.’s haunt last night. 🙂

btw, pass protection is always good on 7-on-7 drills 😉

  52. d1島 April 5, 2009 9:54 am

Checked the schedule, didn’t realize only 3 more series at home for BaseBows. Good ting the WAC tourney stay here this year 🙂

Good morning, Tsaikos! Kekoa, it was AWESOME meeting you last night, and seeing the other Tsaikos on KK’s birthday. I think Stretch has a photo of the birthday “cake” they brought for KK. Okay, just so that no one gets any crazy ideas, the “cake” was a slab of tofu. Hahaha! Pride, thanks again…your place is soooo very cool.

  56. bighilofan2 April 5, 2009 10:20 am

    good job ST

    have a nice day peoples.

2 lbs poke will go in a minute.

    heheheheheh

  57. Stephen Tsai April 5, 2009 10:24 am

Maybe it was because La‘anui Correa was at practice yesterday, but for the first time, I saw that crazed-dog look in R.J. KIesel-Kauhane’s face. He’s always been a workout guy — great numbers, particularly in the lifts — but now I think he’s going to be a real force this year, someone who can take over a game. Oh, yeah, he’s Blaze Soares’ cousin.

  58. addahknowjoe April 5, 2009 10:28 am

    that’s what we need more:

    Controlled Chaos!

    Reckless Abandon!

    People flyin’ with a purpose!

Hope Mac turns up the amps!

  59. d1島 April 5, 2009 10:29 am

I can see how Correa would have that affect on some guys….

    So, Fast & Furious, eh?

  60. letsgowarriors April 5, 2009 10:30 am

stephen, waht does laanui have to do with rj?

  61. d1島 April 5, 2009 10:31 am

    Howzit A-joe!

btw, look like last night was your chance for solve all the problems of the world with Kekoa. 🙂

  62. d1島 April 5, 2009 10:33 am

    PowderPuff,

But the big question is: Was Koakane able to recognize that it was made out of tofu? 😯

  63. addahknowjoe April 5, 2009 10:53 am

D1- Kekoa bestowed some valuable lessons of life upon me.

I do think we solved the financial crisis our country is in and quite possibly how to develop residual income simply with the stimulus package we all will receive. Kekoa is amazing! Never underestimate his quiet soft spoken demeanor.

Which reminds me again, a big post congratulations to KK’s annual celebration of his victory dash to the egg!

As always a big mahalo to Pride for his aloha and opening up his second home to us all.

  64. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 11:01 am

d1, cant answer for ST but La’anui was one those players that come along so often characterized by a passionate approach to weight training and nastiness in practice.

There have been many over the years–but try “men-tol” and “G-nuts”.
Pisa also created anxiety among a few teammates.

    Anyway, u get the picture?

  65. addahknowjoe April 5, 2009 11:02 am

    Oh,

heard a rumor through the grapevines PowderPuff got some new custom tailored, state of the art, hi tech, ergonomically balanced, wind resistant, gravity defying flights for her darts. With her inside connections she got ‘um at a steal price!

She locked and loaded for another round of dart tourneys.

    or so the rumor said…

  66. MeiLing April 5, 2009 11:04 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

Prayers for a successful surgery for Whitley.

Hmmm, gonna have to make it to practice to see Moniz. Glad he’s getting more time at QB.

    SteveM, you up yet?

LizK, found another song we could t-sing together.

Have a wonderful day in Hawai’i nei! or whereevah you stay!

  67. letsgowarriors April 5, 2009 11:09 am

stephen, besides funaki, how have the rest of the RBs looked? as well as spencer smith and the safeties? thanks.

  68. Stephen Tsai April 5, 2009 11:09 am

    letsgo:
warriorfanny is correct. Correa (and Chris Brown and Pisa Tinoisamoa) were just crazy-arse defensive players. They would play within the scheme, but also have enough confidence to try to create plays on their own. Like I said yesterday, Correa used to sleep in his helmet in the days leading to the start of training camp. And Brown used to inhale smelling salts to give him an extra jolt (OK, I wouldn’t recommend that one).
So I saw Correa yesterday, and I started thinking back to those guys. And then I saw Kiesel-Kauhane coming off the field, and he’s got that look. It was a two-hand-touch practice, but he was rarin’ to make plays.

  69. Stephen Tsai April 5, 2009 11:10 am

Thing is, Adam Leonard was like that in 07, but not really in 08. Not sure why not.

  70. letsgowarriors April 5, 2009 11:14 am

haku has that same mentality. all the brothers do. is he looking like he’ll get into the DT rotation this year?

excited to see what RJ does this year. he has all the measurables in the weight room and testing.

  71. Stretch April 5, 2009 11:18 am

  72. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 11:19 am

d1, ur on spot with WAC road games our bsbl bows face….w/ the exception of Fresno State, we play 8 games in the high altitudes at RENO and NMSU. The good news is despite our low team BA (.247), only Garcia and Roquemore have thus far failed to go the yard. But that could change in lighter air. It will be fun….and it begins next week when we visit the Wolf Pack.

  73. wafan April 5, 2009 11:20 am

    bhf2 . . .

I definitely would not want to incite the anger of any Tsai-kette by instituting a gender based set of records. Some of them could definitely keep pace with some of the smaller Tsai-kos. Dang, you have seen some of them eat/drink!

But, to be fair, I suppose a gender based set of records should be kept.

Please. No more comparisons with golf and team sports. Please. 😆

Mei Ling — we woke up around an hour ago and just had brunch from our Kiawe Grill left overs. I finally figured it out — your brother-in-law has enthralled all the ladies…thats why us guys are outnumbered 4:1 and we almost overflowed the room again.

wafan – you said the weather in early June in Seattle was just right. Just right for who? Remember, I’m a Hawaii girl who gets cold when it goes below 70!! So, what’s the weather like in early June?

Im curious to see what coaching influence Chris Tormey will have in terms of impact on the following DBs:
redshirt frosh, Lewis Walker, Steve Stepter, Steven Christian, Kawika Ornellas and further development of true-frosh sensation Richard Torres, esp on STs and as a package DB.

Time to step-up and show n tell for the outer isles boyz:
    Kenny Estes and Mana Silva.

    Apprentice to Journeyman starter?
It’s your time Spencer Smith….make Glanville proud.

  82. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 12:21 pm

Kazz, lol. I hear u mi amigo, but i couldnt resist the often heard sound-bite coming from Tiger after an 11th inning (there i go again) comeback on the back-nine,

“I just try to put myself in a position to win on the 18th of the final round.”

Compare to Coach MikeTrapasso saying, “We just want to be in a position to win in the late innings.”

Conner Little getting behind on his pitch counts, bottom 1,
    2-0, Sparts take early lead.

  87. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 5, 2009 1:33 pm

  88. piper's son April 5, 2009 1:33 pm

ST and others: thanks for the updates and observations of spring practice for us that can’t or couldn’t make it!

  90. wafan April 5, 2009 1:37 pm

    jm006.5 . . .

Just right for everyone! Days are warm and nights are cool. Bring a sweater for the evenings. Of course, it really depends on any lows that develop off the coast.

Generally, the temps hit the mid to upper 70’s during the days with clear skies and the low’s get down to the 50’s at night. Naturally, the clearer the days the cooler the nights; so, mid-40’s at night is not unheard of.

What dates will you and your family be in Seattle? Maybe we can schedule a meal one night.

Let me know: wafanat comcast period net.

  92. wafan April 5, 2009 2:12 pm

I refuse to listen to the baseBow game. I listened for less than a minute yesterday and they lost.

Thanks, in advance, for the updates!!!

  93. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 3:08 pm

watching the bow baseballers is kinda like watching an NBA playoff game–just tune in on the last 2 minutes.

For those with weak hearts, 6-4, Hawaii, top of the 7th with one out.

  94. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 3:30 pm

    Hawaii, 7-4 bottom 8.
New Mexico State went 3-1 against SAC ST winning 15-5 today.
The wolf Pack gave up 17 runs at Ruston and is 3-1 too.

    Hawaii leads 7-4 top ninth.
The bowz arent playing perfect ball but they are kickin’ bowzball.

  95. Committed Road Warrior April 5, 2009 3:37 pm

Watch out about posting UH scores here. al stay mad if anyone’s posting live scores and he’s recording the game on DVR for later viewing. ❗

  96. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 3:40 pm

Sam Spangler 4 plus innings of shutout ball, beats Sparts 7-4, Hawaii shares WAC lead at 3-1.
    Spangler gets 5th win.

  97. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 5, 2009 3:50 pm

Mahalo for the updates guys. I wasn’t able to watch the game or be there in person.

Amazing win today again by coming from behind… But the key word is “again”. We need to stop this playing from behind stuff sooner than later.

  98. BowsForever April 5, 2009 3:57 pm

Wow. These BaseBows are a scrappy bunch, I’ll say that. Way to start WAC play!

Agreed with Kazz though, I believe the ‘Bows were behind in every single game this series. I’d have to think that scoring first and piling on the runs is a more comfortable position to be playing from, but whatever the ‘Bows doing, it’s working well enough (so far).

  99. Ralph April 5, 2009 3:59 pm

our outfielders got to hit more consistently for us to continue to win in high altitude at Nevada and New Mexico state…namely Montplasir, Roquemore, Johnson and van Doornum…Roquemore is credited with 8 LOB’s in yesterday’s split, 4 per game…need some more timely hits and RBI’s by them..in #94 warriorfanny stated that Nev. gave up17 runs at La tech and came out 3-1..meaning they had to score a lot themselves, we need to..

we haven’t made plans yet, but will only be there for about 2 days before the cruise and few hours between getting off the boat and getting on the plane. I know my daughter wants to spend the day with a friend who now lives in Seattle and hubby has a couple of friends he wants to see. We’ll see how things go. Besides, won’t you still be in school? hehehehe.
    (Mid-Pac’s last day is 5/22!!)

  103. Ralph April 5, 2009 4:26 pm

Nash has two more scholies to give next year, use it wisely….we need outside shooters…the two pg’s are noted for scoring, we need someone to move the ball-better dribbling, passing and creating offensive mismatchups to score…

  104. SteveM April 5, 2009 4:38 pm

jm2375 — getting excited about your cruise? 🙂 Enjoy…it will probably be the fastest 7 days of your life. SEATAC is quite a ways from the Seattle piers, so unless you have an afternoon flight, it is usually a scramble to get to the airport on disembarkation day.

  105. warriorfanny April 5, 2009 4:42 pm

We have played 29 games (19-10) and are just past the half-way mark (56). This team has a personality of its own.
I cant dispute any observations made by our posters, including the wise caveat made by Kazz, in his “sooner or later” comment.
I just know there is something special about this team that if successful will be defined by 19th-hole pundits.

Piers to SeaTac is about 20-25 minutes by taxi. If it is a tour bus it might be longer just because of loading and unloading. Taxi will run you about $35 + tip. The four of you should fit comfortably if you are careful with packing and limit your suitcases.

I wonder if they still have the van type taxi.

Another thought. What about The Airporter? Do they have service from the pier to SeaTac?

Ralph – where’s the info from?

  119. Garret April 5, 2009 6:10 pm

    jm2375,

I took a 7-day cruise (Inside Passage to Alaska) on NCL that left from Seattle–went with my parents, sister’s family, Lori, and 2-month-old Faith. We all had a great time and the embarkation/disembarkation process in Seattle was very efficient.

It sounds to me that you will have time between your disembarkation and flight to see something in Seattle. I’d recommend Pike’s market to get some smoked salmon…Lori and I are huge smoked salmon fans and the best we’ve had has been from there. If it wasn’t so expensive for shipping, we’d buy more.

  120. SteveM April 5, 2009 6:12 pm

jm2375 — expect a leisurely 0930 (approx.) disembarkation after breakfast unless you want to make special arrangements to get off earlier. I’ll tell you about this along with other tips later. A 5:00 PM flight gives you a lot of time.

Survivor will apparently start filming in Samoa soon…this will be great for Samoa’s economy. In the past the show has treated the environment and culture responsibly, so hopefully they will do the same in Samoa.

Rumor has it that the tiny pacific island nation of Samoa will be the next location of the hit reality show Survivor but this announcement wasn’t supposed to be made public until May.

Samoan Media have reportly been given gagging orders and warned that any leaks could result in Samoa missing out on the lucrative publicity and revenue from having the series shot there.

  123. Garret April 5, 2009 6:20 pm

Apparently the news got out because some New Zealand people had their reservations canceled…it is horrible that a woman had to adjust her wedding after all the plans had been set. They did try to accommodate her, but I can understand why she would be upset.

Aggie Grey’s Lagoon Resort in Apia, which is a top Samoan resort, is apparently closing during part of its June to September peak season to accommodate production staff for the CBS show.

The resort has offered to accomodate affected guests at the old Aggie Grey’s Resort and bus them to the new hotel’s amenities, but many are furious their holidays will be wrecked.

One woman, has had to relocate 50 guests for her wedding as a result of the cancellation.

“Although the hotel is offering to relocate my guests and allow me to get married at the Lagoon, it is disheartening that all my plans have altered tremendously,” she said. “I can’t believe that they think it is so easy to ask more than 50 people to reorganise their lives.”

Another agent had tried to book customers into resorts in Fiji and the Cook Islands.

“There aren’t many alternative options in Samoa so we’re trying to secure places on other islands. Understandably, many aren’t happy because they wanted to travel to Samoa specifically.”

  124. Garret April 5, 2009 6:22 pm

    SteveM,

If I was jm2375, I definitely wouldn’t bother trying to disembark early. Getting up at 8am is early enough, and even then they would have to rush to get ready and quickly hit the buffet before leaving the ship. Much cheaper to load up at the breakfast buffet than pay for food outside of the ship!

  125. Garret April 5, 2009 6:28 pm

We had a great family day today. Checked out the Welk Resort in Escondido, we had free day use of their resort. It was 81 degrees and sunny, so the kids had an awesome time in the pool. Chasing after them in the pool was fun but tiring! Lori doesn’t swim so I really had my hands full.

We’ll go back on Thursday to take the girls fishing there.

Yes Garret… I have stayed aboard as late as 1100 (on purpose) and have once carried my own luggage out the gangway at 0815 (for a 1100 MIA-HNL flight). The normal disembarkation system is a lot more pleasant 🙂

  128. Garret April 5, 2009 6:42 pm

    SteveM,

I agree! However, the last cruise we took (5-day Carnival cruise to Cabo/Ensenada) we were able to disembark with one of the first groups because we wanted to get Faith to school as early as possible. We still ate breakfast before we left, we just had to get up early.

  129. Garret April 5, 2009 6:45 pm

Here is the link to sportsbow’s report:

I think U-Dub offered him a couple of weeks ago, and it appears that he’ll be getting a lot of other offers soon, so it is good that UH didn’t wait any longer to make their offer.

  130. jm2375 April 5, 2009 6:49 pm

SteveM, garret – I knew it!! Hawaiian’s direct flt leaves at 9am, so I knew that wouldn’t work. We’re on NWA direct both ways. Thanks for the tip. Didn’t know we could stay later and have breakfast on the ship.

OK, now I see the story about the 2 players leaving. So, how come it’s not in dis pepah?

  132. SteveM April 5, 2009 7:05 pm

Garret — yes, interesting to note that as a “frequent cruiser”, my luggage was the first off the ship on my last cruises so I could disembark anytime. But I stay with my old habits (who wants to get up at 6:00 AM for breakfast after a week of partying?). Wake up at 8:00 and then go to breakfast to miss the crowd 🙂

The Exxon Valdez oil spill has prompted oil companies to replace single-hulled supertankers with supertankers with two hulls, to avoid spills from occurring. Despite almost all of the rest of the world switching, Exxon still insists on using single-hulled ships, using more single-hulled ships than the rest of its competitors combined! Exxon says that single-hulled ships saves them $18 million per year…but they made $45+ billion in profit last year and the Valdez spill hurt their brand image significantly.

Garret: I read that story on the children left in cars; that was one of the most touching stories I’ve ever read. And the story about grade levels makes sense, I was thinking about that myself a while back. We try to shovel these kids through the system at breakneck speed; and we’re shocked when they’re not prepared for the escalating difficulty and complexity (especially in math). Different kids learn at different paces, and we need to help them as such. Then again, when you have 30 kids to a classroom, decreasing resources, and angry parents calling and e-mailing you, expecting you to be both impart knowledge and raise their children …

I’m glad that you can use that article…and that you have such nice weather today during your break!

  157. Garret April 6, 2009 6:06 am

Looks like Miami wants Bess at slotback instead of as a starting WR. I think that slotback is ideally suited for Bess, so this is a decent decision…though starting WRs probably get paid a lot more so it isn’t great for Bess.

many people were curious if this regime saw Davone Bess as a starter opposite of Ted Ginn heading into the offseason. Now I think it’s clear that they probably see Bess as a solid slot receiver – which I think is the role he’s best suited for.

  158. Garret April 6, 2009 6:07 am

This writer thinks that Bess isn’t a dependable receiving option? Did he watch Miami’s games last season or watch any tape on Bess at UH?

As of now, Ted Ginn Jr. and Greg Camarillo are slotted as Miami’s starting wide receivers, but that would change if a player with Boldin’s abilities is acquired. Additionally, Davone Bess is a rising talent but may not be a dependable receiving option just yet.

KHNL has an article about Pro Day. No new information here, but I thought I should post this quote from Rich Miano.

“The broad jump by Ryan Mouton was 11’0″, which is the 2nd best jump by a defensive back in the country this year, so when you go 11 feet, that shows you what kind of explosiveness you have. David ran again, and ran a low 4.8, but his individual workout with linebacker coaches I thought was phenomenal, he caught balls like a wide receiver, he was real pure in catching them. Josh Leonard and the 41 repetitions at bench press at 225 is like a combine record almost, it just goes to show you year in and year out the warriors are the strongest team in the nation, Jake Ingram, by far if you talk to the scouts, there’s nobody who debates he’s the best at what he does, it’s just whether or not someone will draft a long snapper.”

Miano also says Mouton pulled his hamstring again while running the 40 yard dash. He says that could hurt his worth if teams perceive it as a chronic injury. Solomon Elimimian also came in with a pulled hamstring that hampered his performance.

    Garret,

How can whomever wrote that article about, “Bess’ dependability right now,” say that? Like Ginn had a better year than Bess?…I don’t think so!!

  162. Ronnie April 6, 2009 6:48 am

    mctruck,

I agree with you. Of course I may have missed the highlights of Ginn sliding on his back to catch a ball thrown too low, or dragging 3 defenders on his back for YAC or coming back into a game after injuring his thumb (don’t you need those to catch a football).

  163. djmitcho April 6, 2009 6:53 am

Good Morning Everyboy! Another weekend gone. Hope everyone had a good one and I hope everyone has a good week.

  164. Piper's son April 6, 2009 7:18 am

GARRET: “I think that slotback is ideally suited for Bess, so this is a decent decision…though starting WRs probably get paid a lot more so it isn’t great for Bess.”

Is it because WR get better PR? Yardage? etc?
Seems to me that possession of the ball should count and that usually is something that the slots do best.

    Just curious.

  165. Piper's son April 6, 2009 7:26 am

AL: Thanks for your observations about Ji.

No question that he is presently a “project” but hopefully he will develop and, who knows that a presence of a Chinese player will inspire others from the PRC or other Far East countries, and/or Bruce’s camp, to come to Hawaii.

  167. Garret April 6, 2009 8:07 am

    mctruck and Ronnie,

I agree with you of course about Bess. The writer just wanted to put Bess down in order to promote the idea of Miami trading for a #1 WR or drafting a WR.

  168. Garret April 6, 2009 8:09 am

    Piper’s Son,

Miami runs a lot of formations with 1 or 2 TEs, and they use a FB in some sets. When they have 2 TEs or a FB and TE, then the slotback doesn’t get to play. So, their WRs get more playing time than their starting slotback.

That is why Bess’ receptions went *way* up when Camarillo got hurt and Bess went from slotback to WR. Slotbacks may be appreciated and Bess did a great job for Miami at slotback last year when Camarillo was healthy…but Bess got something like 2x more receptions when he was starting at WR and receptions translate to $$$.

  170. roysan16 April 6, 2009 8:49 am

Listening to 1420, BC, mentions UH baseball cracks the Collegiate America top 25 poll at #24. With this poll being friendlier to the east coast teams shows that people on that part of the country are taking notice of UH according to BC.

A few days ago I was listening to Coach Stutzmen talking about Warrior WR Javonte Taylor, he mentioned, “He’s by far the fastest player I’ve ever seen…a 10.4 100 meter guy.” And I immediately envisioned how the Florida player Percy Harvin completely destroyed UH with his speed. And then I began to thinking how nice it would be if UH had a player that could dominate the game similarly how Percy Harvin did against UH. Remembering the Florida game and Percy Harvin the Florida team lined Percy at WR, RB, SB and as a special team’s returner. And how I wish the Warriors would utilize Javonte Taylor the same way Florida utilizes Percy Harvin. So many times you here coaches alluding to how play makers make the difference in winning a game and with that in mind the Warriors should develop their play makers, such as players like Javonte Taylor, who just need some developing in getting his talent to be valuable to the team. You saw Percy Harvin’s raw speed total destroy UH. And for sure I realize that Percy harvin is in a league of his own. But for UH I’m hoping the coaches fully utilize and develop the player’s potential to as the furthest they can go, especially Javonte Taylor. For if they did, I foresee a lot of good things happening to the Warriors offensively.

  171. djmitcho April 6, 2009 9:44 am

Wow, practice must be pau by now and no new post yet…hmmm….I hope there is a lot of good news from practice

  172. Warbear April 6, 2009 10:05 am

royan16, I agree with your point about how speed kills in college football, But one thing about the post… Harvin didnt destroy UH because he didnt play in the game, He was injuried.

  176. warriorfanny2 April 6, 2009 10:42 am

Roysan, I would dispute your contention, at least this year, that the baseball polls favor the East Coast.
Not saying your thesis at one time was not without merit.
However, the current trend would outdate that thinking.

Earlier I had written an article about the West Coast Conference and the Big West featuring 8 teams in the top 25 at one point or another in this early season.

Currently, BWC members UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton are in the top 10 and Cal Poly is ranked at 21 while WCC member San Diego is at #25.
In my opinion the BWC and WCC are the premiere conferences in college baseball.

PAC members ASU (#1) and OSU (#16) are also ranked, together with WAC teams–SDSU (#18) and TCU (#19).

Teams on the east-coast are Georgia, GaTech, Costal Carolina, NC and Virginia–hardly an indication of geographical bias.

It may be worthy to note that Cal State Fullerton went 2-3 last week and still wasnt knocked out of the top-10.

Baseball is ever-changing and I suspect it is also a reflection of the times given the economic downturn and the limitations on D1A scholies– college bound baseball players are choosing to stay close to home–hence, it enhances the California teams where baseball is one huge factory that produces players in massive amounts.

Dont forget our WAC and defending national Champs–Fresno State.
If they get hot–they will zoom into the national rankings and New Mexico State is already making a statement and has achieved ranking in other polls.

Just my opinion, but I would wager attention will focus on the West and surrounding SW regions.
Naturally, Georgia and NC will remain in play until the super regions.
Thankyou for broaching the subject–it is worthy of discussion.

al, u da man–u should compose an all-time krazy-banzai-whacked-out, rainbow-warrior football team–I nominate Semeri, La’anui, Chris Brown and mento as starters.
*Hint–go back to those Tomey, daddy wags dayz when our LBs would fly-over-blockers. lol.
