Fehoko faces challenge
Whitley Fehoko’s football career is apparently over.
Fehoko, who hoped to play for the Warriors this fall, was diagnosed with an irregular heart beat.
He is likely to undergo a procedure to correct a faulty heart valve.

Bryant Moniz finally was able to get some significant reps at quarterback during yesterday’s practice.
Moniz, a Leilehua graduate who attended Fresno City College for a season, made several strong throws during team drills.
“I was nervous just getting back to game speed,” Moniz said.
Greg Alexander, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin get the majority of the snaps in spring practice. Moniz and Steele Jantz often are used on the scout team — as safeties.
Moniz said he is motivated by “the love of the game. It keeps me going. I love it, even playing safety on scout team. I have a lot of fun doing that.”
To be sure, Moniz is making a commitment. He is not on scholarship. He has a 10-month-old daughter, Cali. And he commutes daily from his home in Wahiawa.
“It’s tough, but I figure it will pay off one day,” Moniz said.

I’m glad that Bryant Moniz got some reps and did well. Being a walk-on at a very crowded position, that will get extremely crowded when 3 scholarship freshmen join the team this summer, makes these Spring Practices crucial for him. The odds are against him but his commitment and love for the game will insure he tries his best…

We may need a scale to weigh the food before consumption. That will be the one major setback to the entire thing. I certainly do not want my hand bitten in the feeding frenzy.

Inoke Funaki – Heard he’s doing well learning the nuances that come with the running back position. I know he is one of those game speed types that is very deceptive and can wreak havoc in the open field. Cannot wait to see it all come together good luck.
Linebackers – Good to see Brashton and the boys get that tough love nastiness to them. I feel sorry for the sorry arse QB, RB, or WR coming across the middle and getting the hammer dropped on em this year. A few hearts will definitely be broken and maybe a few bones…OUCH! Brashton, R. J., Blaze, Marc, Paipai, and the rest of the boys going produce planny tunderous hits this year and we definitely going hear “Da Crackle In Da Sky”
Greg Salas and Kealoha “Pretty Boy” Pilares – The both of you as slot receivers, I can envision being a dominating duo. I envision both of you being All-WAC performers and hope you both stay in good health and injury free!
Billy Ray Stutz – Been hearing great things about this guy. Would be awesome to see him crack the starting rotation as a Freshman. Can envision him being the next big time receiver for us…Au’ryte.

I just seen all these guys you mentioned and a few more you didn’t, 24 hrs ago. I’m still excited at the many “circus” catches and YAC I witnessed. The subtle reminders from our resident enforcers to be very wary when crossing their turf. The coaches who are fine tuning them for battle in the trenches. But what was most impressive to me was Alexander the Great. The poise, confidence, velocity and accuracy
of his passing. The feeling that he really understands his role and is working hard to perfect
it. On several plays, he was able to ‘look off’ the defenders to one side, and then fire a bullet across the field to a streaking Greg Salas or Billy Ray…

It was watching the BaseBows yesterday. That comeback in the first game was thrilling. They came close in the second game, but it’s a good lesson for them to learn that they can’t always rely on making late inning comebacks.
Apparently, there are a number of NFA’s on the UH campus. There was this group of students sitting in the first row heckling the Spartans. He was pretty funny, but then they got a little colorful, no swearing, just a little gross trying to get in their heads, and someone from the stadium staff told them they had to leave since those weren’t the seats that they paid for.
OK off to try and get some house chores done before I head off to the final game in the series! My poor kids haven’t seen much of me this weekend…I don’t think that they really mind.

It was GREAT watching the BaseBows yesterday!
what I appreciate about this years bsb bows is they are doing it together. We neither have a power pitcher nor a batting order that rains in hits.
Still, they scrap, fall down, screw-up and pick themselves up again and deliver a kick to their opponents groin.
Trap is a solid pitching coach that plays small ball but that is only a template not neccessarily a result.
The type of baseball the bowz are playing is good stuff for youth league coaches and kids to see.
Fundamentals that work if you keep executing:
pitchers with control and hitting their spots, keeping the ball low and away to induce grounders for your infield to make a play;
hitters being patient and going with the ball and running smart on the basepaths.
Reduce your mistakes, stay close and hang in the game for a chance to win late.

Howzit, yup I think last year was a learning year for all the boys but now that the pieces is fitting in nicely and everybody getting comfortable with their roles in the offense, going be dangerous once again. I think Greg Alexander is in for a huge year and has put forth the work and effort into becoming the next great QB for us. I know he and Coach Rolo work relentlessly watching film and working on his release, etc… I’m sure now that he has more confidence knowing the offense, his receivers, and a more focused OLine, he can only breathe success this year. Plus he get Inoke in the backfield in case something break down, just give it to the “Turbo Tongan” and watch him run all over the defense…
Oh and one comment about my observations at practice…
I like what I see from Moniz. He got some reps and threw some nice catchable balls. I think that he may be someone to watch in the future. All of the QBs looked better, but they were getting better protection which clearly made a difference.
Pilares was looking good at slot and making some acrobatic catches! With, Pilares and Salas in the slot position, other teams better watch out because both have good hands and can gain some yards after the catch.

Agree wicchu. Fans are getting excited and like Trap now ’cause the team is winning. However, those wins are coming at home and pretty much at or close to sea level on the road.
I hope the bats continue to come to life more as they head off to “football score” ball parks on the road.
Many of those hits to the OF turned into outstanding catches by the Sproutin’s RF but will prolly going go yard in light air and altitude so the prospects look good. Bows just gotta support their pitchers as the WAC season moves on.

Maybe it was because La‘anui Correa was at practice yesterday, but for the first time, I saw that crazed-dog look in R.J. KIesel-Kauhane’s face. He’s always been a workout guy — great numbers, particularly in the lifts — but now I think he’s going to be a real force this year, someone who can take over a game. Oh, yeah, he’s Blaze Soares’ cousin.

D1- Kekoa bestowed some valuable lessons of life upon me.
I do think we solved the financial crisis our country is in and quite possibly how to develop residual income simply with the stimulus package we all will receive. Kekoa is amazing! Never underestimate his quiet soft spoken demeanor.

warriorfanny is correct. Correa (and Chris Brown and Pisa Tinoisamoa) were just crazy-arse defensive players. They would play within the scheme, but also have enough confidence to try to create plays on their own. Like I said yesterday, Correa used to sleep in his helmet in the days leading to the start of training camp. And Brown used to inhale smelling salts to give him an extra jolt (OK, I wouldn’t recommend that one).
So I saw Correa yesterday, and I started thinking back to those guys. And then I saw Kiesel-Kauhane coming off the field, and he’s got that look. It was a two-hand-touch practice, but he was rarin’ to make plays.
Thing is, Adam Leonard was like that in 07, but not really in 08. Not sure why not.
haku has that same mentality. all the brothers do. is he looking like he’ll get into the DT rotation this year?
excited to see what RJ does this year. he has all the measurables in the weight room and testing.

I was talking with Rob last night and she mentions that she likes Moniz as he QB. I start to ask her, “Why do you like Moniz?” but decided to stop. The last time that question was asked, we lost a Tsaiko.

d1, ur on spot with WAC road games our bsbl bows face….w/ the exception of Fresno State, we play 8 games in the high altitudes at RENO and NMSU. The good news is despite our low team BA (.247), only Garcia and Roquemore have thus far failed to go the yard. But that could change in lighter air. It will be fun….and it begins next week when we visit the Wolf Pack.

I definitely would not want to incite the anger of any Tsai-kette by instituting a gender based set of records. Some of them could definitely keep pace with some of the smaller Tsai-kos. Dang, you have seen some of them eat/drink!
But, to be fair, I suppose a gender based set of records should be kept.
Those are the guys you can’t help but cheer for. Those guys that may be a few pork hash short of one full order make some big time plays in game-situations!

Just right for everyone! Days are warm and nights are cool. Bring a sweater for the evenings. Of course, it really depends on any lows that develop off the coast.
Generally, the temps hit the mid to upper 70’s during the days with clear skies and the low’s get down to the 50’s at night. Naturally, the clearer the days the cooler the nights; so, mid-40’s at night is not unheard of.
What dates will you and your family be in Seattle? Maybe we can schedule a meal one night.

Agreed with Kazz though, I believe the ‘Bows were behind in every single game this series. I’d have to think that scoring first and piling on the runs is a more comfortable position to be playing from, but whatever the ‘Bows doing, it’s working well enough (so far).
our outfielders got to hit more consistently for us to continue to win in high altitude at Nevada and New Mexico state…namely Montplasir, Roquemore, Johnson and van Doornum…Roquemore is credited with 8 LOB’s in yesterday’s split, 4 per game…need some more timely hits and RBI’s by them..in #94 warriorfanny stated that Nev. gave up17 runs at La tech and came out 3-1..meaning they had to score a lot themselves, we need to..

We have played 29 games (19-10) and are just past the half-way mark (56). This team has a personality of its own.
I cant dispute any observations made by our posters, including the wise caveat made by Kazz, in his “sooner or later” comment.
I just know there is something special about this team that if successful will be defined by 19th-hole pundits.
As long as we stay healthy this may be Coach Trapasso’s finest hour. His boyz just wont quit.

Piers to SeaTac is about 20-25 minutes by taxi. If it is a tour bus it might be longer just because of loading and unloading. Taxi will run you about $35 + tip. The four of you should fit comfortably if you are careful with packing and limit your suitcases.
I wonder if they still have the van type taxi.
Another thought. What about The Airporter? Do they have service from the pier to SeaTac?

Anyway I just wanted to thank the many peeps who expressed their warm thoughts on my special day. Add mahalo’s to those who took time to help me celebrate the day. It is very humbling to know so many of you and share together fun, fuuud, friendship and family.

Be careful using those vacuum bags; gives you more space but gotta watch the weight. 50 pound limit is easily reached (esp. if, as you say, hubby is Tsaiko-sized).

I took a 7-day cruise (Inside Passage to Alaska) on NCL that left from Seattle–went with my parents, sister’s family, Lori, and 2-month-old Faith. We all had a great time and the embarkation/disembarkation process in Seattle was very efficient.
It sounds to me that you will have time between your disembarkation and flight to see something in Seattle. I’d recommend Pike’s market to get some smoked salmon…Lori and I are huge smoked salmon fans and the best we’ve had has been from there. If it wasn’t so expensive for shipping, we’d buy more.
jm2375 — expect a leisurely 0930 (approx.) disembarkation after breakfast unless you want to make special arrangements to get off earlier. I’ll tell you about this along with other tips later. A 5:00 PM flight gives you a lot of time.

Lasha Parghalava and Adam Jespersen asked to transfer out of UH.
Survivor will apparently start filming in Samoa soon…this will be great for Samoa’s economy. In the past the show has treated the environment and culture responsibly, so hopefully they will do the same in Samoa.
Apparently the news got out because some New Zealand people had their reservations canceled…it is horrible that a woman had to adjust her wedding after all the plans had been set. They did try to accommodate her, but I can understand why she would be upset.

If I was jm2375, I definitely wouldn’t bother trying to disembark early. Getting up at 8am is early enough, and even then they would have to rush to get ready and quickly hit the buffet before leaving the ship. Much cheaper to load up at the breakfast buffet than pay for food outside of the ship!
We had a great family day today. Checked out the Welk Resort in Escondido, we had free day use of their resort. It was 81 degrees and sunny, so the kids had an awesome time in the pool. Chasing after them in the pool was fun but tiring! Lori doesn’t swim so I really had my hands full.
We’ll go back on Thursday to take the girls fishing there.

Yes Garret… I have stayed aboard as late as 1100 (on purpose) and have once carried my own luggage out the gangway at 0815 (for a 1100 MIA-HNL flight). The normal disembarkation system is a lot more pleasant 🙂

I agree! However, the last cruise we took (5-day Carnival cruise to Cabo/Ensenada) we were able to disembark with one of the first groups because we wanted to get Faith to school as early as possible. We still ate breakfast before we left, we just had to get up early.

I think U-Dub offered him a couple of weeks ago, and it appears that he’ll be getting a lot of other offers soon, so it is good that UH didn’t wait any longer to make their offer.

Garret — yes, interesting to note that as a “frequent cruiser”, my luggage was the first off the ship on my last cruises so I could disembark anytime. But I stay with my old habits (who wants to get up at 6:00 AM for breakfast after a week of partying?). Wake up at 8:00 and then go to breakfast to miss the crowd 🙂

ralph…..they would not cut ji for two reasons; one, they would lose all ties with any future chinese connections (and quite possibly any far east prospects) and two, he was sent by bruce o’neill who still is involved with basketball (has a basketball skill developmental program) and they wouldn’t want to severe ties with his recruiting pipeline which also includes kids like ji (there’s a seven footer or two out there with a chinese surname).

Garret: I read that story on the children left in cars; that was one of the most touching stories I’ve ever read. And the story about grade levels makes sense, I was thinking about that myself a while back. We try to shovel these kids through the system at breakneck speed; and we’re shocked when they’re not prepared for the escalating difficulty and complexity (especially in math). Different kids learn at different paces, and we need to help them as such. Then again, when you have 30 kids to a classroom, decreasing resources, and angry parents calling and e-mailing you, expecting you to be both impart knowledge and raise their children …

Looks like Miami wants Bess at slotback instead of as a starting WR. I think that slotback is ideally suited for Bess, so this is a decent decision…though starting WRs probably get paid a lot more so it isn’t great for Bess.
This writer thinks that Bess isn’t a dependable receiving option? Did he watch Miami’s games last season or watch any tape on Bess at UH?

I agree with you of course about Bess. The writer just wanted to put Bess down in order to promote the idea of Miami trading for a #1 WR or drafting a WR.

Miami runs a lot of formations with 1 or 2 TEs, and they use a FB in some sets. When they have 2 TEs or a FB and TE, then the slotback doesn’t get to play. So, their WRs get more playing time than their starting slotback.
That is why Bess’ receptions went *way* up when Camarillo got hurt and Bess went from slotback to WR. Slotbacks may be appreciated and Bess did a great job for Miami at slotback last year when Camarillo was healthy…but Bess got something like 2x more receptions when he was starting at WR and receptions translate to $$$.

Listening to 1420, BC, mentions UH baseball cracks the Collegiate America top 25 poll at #24. With this poll being friendlier to the east coast teams shows that people on that part of the country are taking notice of UH according to BC.
A few days ago I was listening to Coach Stutzmen talking about Warrior WR Javonte Taylor, he mentioned, “He’s by far the fastest player I’ve ever seen…a 10.4 100 meter guy.” And I immediately envisioned how the Florida player Percy Harvin completely destroyed UH with his speed. And then I began to thinking how nice it would be if UH had a player that could dominate the game similarly how Percy Harvin did against UH. Remembering the Florida game and Percy Harvin the Florida team lined Percy at WR, RB, SB and as a special team’s returner. And how I wish the Warriors would utilize Javonte Taylor the same way Florida utilizes Percy Harvin. So many times you here coaches alluding to how play makers make the difference in winning a game and with that in mind the Warriors should develop their play makers, such as players like Javonte Taylor, who just need some developing in getting his talent to be valuable to the team. You saw Percy Harvin’s raw speed total destroy UH. And for sure I realize that Percy harvin is in a league of his own. But for UH I’m hoping the coaches fully utilize and develop the player’s potential to as the furthest they can go, especially Javonte Taylor. For if they did, I foresee a lot of good things happening to the Warriors offensively.

Roysan, I would dispute your contention, at least this year, that the baseball polls favor the East Coast.
Not saying your thesis at one time was not without merit.
However, the current trend would outdate that thinking.
Earlier I had written an article about the West Coast Conference and the Big West featuring 8 teams in the top 25 at one point or another in this early season.
Currently, BWC members UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton are in the top 10 and Cal Poly is ranked at 21 while WCC member San Diego is at #25.
In my opinion the BWC and WCC are the premiere conferences in college baseball.
PAC members ASU (#1) and OSU (#16) are also ranked, together with WAC teams–SDSU (#18) and TCU (#19).
Teams on the east-coast are Georgia, GaTech, Costal Carolina, NC and Virginia–hardly an indication of geographical bias.
It may be worthy to note that Cal State Fullerton went 2-3 last week and still wasnt knocked out of the top-10.
Baseball is ever-changing and I suspect it is also a reflection of the times given the economic downturn and the limitations on D1A scholies– college bound baseball players are choosing to stay close to home–hence, it enhances the California teams where baseball is one huge factory that produces players in massive amounts.
Dont forget our WAC and defending national Champs–Fresno State.
If they get hot–they will zoom into the national rankings and New Mexico State is already making a statement and has achieved ranking in other polls.
Just my opinion, but I would wager attention will focus on the West and surrounding SW regions.
Naturally, Georgia and NC will remain in play until the super regions.
