A female classmate then said: “Why do all ugly people say that?”
The clumsy segue is that the state is spending a lot of money completing the Ching complex and building/renovating locker rooms and meetings rooms on UH’s lower campus. But while the projects are much needed, long overdue and aesthetically pleasing, there apparently isn’t enough money for new furniture.
Administrators and coaches from several sports have been seeking donations for desks, chairs and other interior essentials.
Inner beauty should matter.

FYI…..funding for FF&E (i.e., Fixtures, Furniture & Equipment) is typically a separate source (i.e., EQUIPMENT line item budget in CIP funding appropriation) from CIP funding for DESIGN and CONSTRUCTION, respectively.
Could be that UH re-programmed the EQUIPMENT line item CIP funding to cover the unanticipated CONSTRUCTION change order costs……which would be a typical strategy…..since gotta build the new facility first…..then can deal with the FF&E inside later on. That’s what happened when the Kapolei Public Library sat empty for over 1 year after completion of construction before the Hawaii State Public Library System could get the necessary additional funding appropriated by the State Legislature to purchase the FF&E.
Also, some FF&E items (window coverings, position-related furniture, and office equipment – copy machines, computers, printers, phone handsets, security systems, etc.) would be funded out of the separate UH Lower Campus Operating fund budget (as opposed to CIP appropriation funding) – same fund source to cover recurring water, sewer, electricity, telecom, and electronic security costs.
The Operating fund budget to cover operating costs (and eventually repair and maintenance costs after the contractor guarantees and manufacturer warranties have expired) typically always needs to increase whenever any State entity builds a new facility. With UH Lower Campus budget woes, that obviously didn’t happen…..which explains the current FF&E situation.

The cost overruns are because of UH-initiated construction change order revisions……most of which have yet to be paid to the Contractors nor the subcontractors…..with most still tied up in the UH construction administration bureaucracy under review and not yet approved.
The UH administrators obviously placed a higher priority on requesting and initiating these construction change order work than on providing new FF&E for the facility.
Regarding the stadium study, I find it curious that the OIA is recognized as a stakeholder…….but not the ILH who schedules most regular season football games at Aloha Stadium……nor the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) who schedules the State Football Championships there……nor all the public high schools who conduct their graduation ceremonies there.
Also noticed that Centerplate…..the stadium concessionaire who also runs the Swap Meet….is also not listed as a stakeholder.
Yet Populous……a mainland-based stadium architectural consulting firm…..who was only partially involved in the design of the recent handrail upgrades at Aloha Stadium……is considered to be stakeholder.

It seems the UH Athletic Department administrators/managers were incapable of successfully managing the TC Ching Athletic Complex construction project. I suppose they are successful operational managers, but were cast into roles for which they lacked the skill-set and experience. The mismanagement of this project is an embarrassment to the University of Hawaii.

The project was managed by the Upper Campus…..not the Lower Campus.
The Lower Campus is just the recipient of the project…..and is left with the task of dealing with the result……like getting FF&E.

Don’t know will manage…..but the H-Zone store will be keeping the same store employees as the Rainbowtique. The employees will be transferred over from the UH Bookstore.

Shoot, they could have a H-zone mobile site on all the Islands on game day, with a wide screen!
Maybe on the JC campus sites.
On the neighbor islands; they could ask lunch wagons to participate. Not everyone can afford pay for view. It would allow younger ones to see, what they could be.
It looks like oaks christian Center Malik Patton will be a preferred walk on at Hawaii and should be working out with the team this summer. Gotta open up that pipeline

The H Zone, effective July 1, is “owned” and managed by the Athletic Dept. They have as complete control as you can have within the UH.
This means that they can (and will) plan product lines based upon upcoming sporting events, something that was lacking with the UH Bookstore. You’ll notice they are planning for more outlets within the various venues to better serve the public. It’s always been an issue when the larger crowds are present. Access to the store (in Stan Sheriff) was limited and the lines were excessively long.
I believe one outcome from this change in management, is there will be an attentive ear to public concerns and interests with the appropriate actions.
While there will be some bumps along the way while they adjust to the new responsibilities it should be an overall positive move for both the customer and the UH Athletic Dept.

The UHAD has not been very responsive to its “customers”….if you read this Tsaiko’s blog very often…be that as it may…is good news to hear that the H zone…will be moving into the “neighborhoods”…

Considering how the Ching complex project went, the stadium consultants should probably included the DES Bulky Item Pickup folks as a Stakeholder.

This is just damm disgusting and nauseating to read about more stupidity and ignorance going on in the athletic dept. or UH unable to manage and administrate what is needed correctly. What a bunch of idiots they have running the budget at the UH. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY!! I find it hard to believe that there is another university in Div. 1, 11, 111 or NCAA that is run so poorly and low class as this university we have in Manoa.
Every official in the administration should be suspended or fired for malfeasance and incompetence. IT IS JUST INEXCUSABLE THAT COACHES HAVE TO GO BEGGING FOR MONIES TO FURNISH THEIR OFFICES ETC..
