What the heck is the Rainbow Warrior basketball team doing in an outrigger canoe?
It starts with this analogy: When Save a Baby Seal asks for donations, you know the money will go to, well, saving baby seals (or at least one baby seal).
The problem with past Save UH Sports drives is many potential donors wondered how the money would be used specifically. That’s what happens when there are so many stories about debt, constructions over-runs and contract extensions.
But in a refreshing move on indiegogo.com, the UH athletic department yesterday launched a fund-raising campaign that was concisely detailed and, through graphics and a video (featuring the basketball team), showed the need for donations and how they will be spent to offset travel costs.
UH noted:
> Its teams have the highest travel costs among NCAA programs “because we have to fly everywhere.”
> Its teams spend $5.6 million per year on travel, or “approximately” 18 percent of the total athletic department operating budget.
> Of that total amount, it spent $2.2 million last year for visiting teams’ travel subsidies and guarantees.
> Last year, the men’s basketball team spent $235,000 on nine trips that totaled 46,000 miles.
The drawback is the goal — $10,000 — seems a tad low.

I just realized that nearly all of the Oceanic money ($2.3 million annually) is gulped by visiting teams.

Couldn’t we go back and negotiate at least a 50% reduction in the visiting teams travel expenses? That would equate to a $1.1 million dollar savings each year right of the bat. I don’t see why we have to pay the total cost when these teams would have had to spend their own money traveling in California for the BWC or where ever they travel for the MWC. Go Bows

Hawaii needs a special grant from the NCAA for our unique situation.
The 2015 schedule has UH on the road at Ohio State and at Wisconsin. Could be wrong, but I believe that there is a considerable payoff with those two games.

We may be getting a payoff of some $800,000 from OSU and Wisconsin but it has to take care of travel and housing/food expense for the team.
Assuming even $500,000 net, it still does not cover the 5.6mil for travel for all teams; it won’t even cover the visiting teams’ travel subsidies and guarantees.
In short, be like Boya_Jr and Kawika49 and donate!
Looks like the Tsaikos are the major contributors…still at $300.
We have an official fundraising organization called ‘Ahahui Koa Ānuenue why would I give money to a fundraiser on a web site not affiliated with UH? For all I know any donation might be going to some bank account in Nigeria.
Reallity is that UH may have to reexamine going independent like BYU in football. Can’t move the islands closer to the continent.

We need to elect Legislators that will support our state funded program at the University of Hawaii. They need to be all in on support of higher education, facilities, faculty and athletics.
Real support, not just political rhetoric prior to elections.
If funding shortfalls are a challenge at UH, then our legislators should look for revenue streams to support the needs of their constituents.
How about a lottery?
Regarding the sand at the beach volleyball practice courts in Manoa. Could they bag it and sell it? And could the purchasers write off some of that as a donation?

When the “semi-autonomy” bill (keeping tuition) went into effect back in the 90’s, there was a guaranteed amount that UH was supposed to receive out of the General Fund. They never received that guaranteed amount.

The last pink jersey auction for Wahine VB reaped over $ 8,000 for the program and it was done in house.
I would imagine a basketball or football game jersey auction would do well also.
UH should start cleaning out the closets and storage bins and have a garage sale.

If UH goes independent, how much in guarantees would it cost to replace the 4 conference home games? Wouldn’t it cost a lot more than the travel subsidies?
20. A lottery would be an excellent solution. The state’s percentage of the revenue could be earmarked to subsidize state education expenses and higher education in Hawaii, including UH athletics.
Maybe then we could improve our teacher’s wages, have adequate school supplies provided, and A.C. where needed, instead of strikes and furloughs every few years.
Those who are against gambling could choose not to participate. I personally, would feel better about buying lottery tickets if I knew proceeds were going towards helping educate our kids.

But maybe put the sand into pineapple shaped salt shakers and sell them as souvenirs at games and tournaments. Market it as official UH Volleyball souvenir sand (hey, it was at one time…). 🙄
…actually, this is not an original idea of mine. An old entrepreneur friend told me a story about a container load of defective salt shakers and selling genuine Waikiki Beach sand in tourist shops — decades ago. 😐

Not hating on those who donate but I’d like to get something in return…
Remember kid time we sold sweet bread, candy, cookies, coupons, and whatevas. Nowadays kids and parents hang out at intersections asking for donations in their scoop nets to fund their travel. Auwe, go sell something! Sure the timeframe may be short but hey, you can have garage sales, wash cars, go clean yards, do something. No ask for free handouts. But if you like donate to them then go right ahead.
That being said, I still don’t get why UH no can make deal with the City to have concerts at the Stanley. Someone mentioned fun runs. Get plenty things they can do than just sit on their okole and ask for donations. Get out there and do something gunfunnit!

it’s very difficult to phantom that through all the years UH coaches have not “treated” their players with Aloha – however, the coach may have, but the player is all salty for whatever reason

I see where there is a new major athletics donor development officer (UHF). I do not see any former athletes involved in an ‘official” capacity for fundraising in either UH Athletics Admin or in the UHF; in the most recent past there are even fewer in an ‘unofficial’ capacity as well. Perhaps UH could utilize the marketing expertise of a Kop, Untermann, Biscotti, Biscotti, Freuchtel, and dare I even say McGill?
What is that MBA mantra, ‘keep doing things the same way but expect different results is…’

There was 800 Inner Circle passes, 400 Bus Lot, and 350 Upper Halawa passes available this year.
Still have 24 IC’s left, 2 Bus, and 253 UH passes left at 4:20 pm today. In past years all of the IC’s and Bus passes were sold out by Thursday afternoon. Not looking good this year in terms of season ticket renewals if you read between the lines. Dang, should have waited till this afternoon to purchase my pass!
Don Weir — I would expect a significant decline in the Stadium Reserved Parking revenue this year due to the loss of the Kam lot for rail construction. While the positive has been the near sellouts of the inner circle and Bus lots on this 5th day, the Upper Halawa sales has been slow.
BACKGROUND: Season ticket holders were informed that the Kam lot would be unavailable for the next 2 years due to rail logistics and staging. As an alternative, the makai portion of the Upper Halawa lot will be reserved and looks like will have it’s own access gate off Salt Lake Blvd.
Here’s my notes on the Upper Halawa lot sales over the past 5 days:
DAY 1 at 0230 = 343 @ $400
DAY 2 at 1600 = 342 @ $350
DAY 3 at 1700 = 340 @ $300
DAY 4 at 1730 = 333 @ $225
TODAY (1603) = 256 @ $175
While I can see that the Upper Halawa lot is the only alternative location to the Kam lot– I wonder if any of the planners ever attended a game and parked there?
I have nothing against the Halawa lots (upper and lower) and have parked there often. I know the Upper Halawa lot is around the same distance to the stadium as the Kam lot, but maybe they overlook the fact the people parking next to them are paying $5 parking per game.
Didn’t Ben Jay say he was trying to find VALUE for the sport fans? Good concept. I think the AKA lapse in value here is accidental and unavoidable…but, sheeesh.

Maybe it’s certain physical conditions/limitations of my age, but I am beginning to realize that stadium parking (and tailgate) is the tail that wags my dog.
If I don’t have guaranteed parking at the stadium, I am not going. PPV heaven awaits.
A bonus to the parking is a tailgate. Tsai-ko tailgates are great and provided both. I bought season tickets with other Tsai-kos the following season.
If I am going to the football game then, I want good seats.
I get them (eventually) by buying season tickets.
So, if I have parking (tailgate a bonus), I am going to the game.
If I going to the games, I’m buying season tickets.
I’m going to all the games again this year. 🙂

#47 A House: Phantom or salty how ever you want to call it the reality is former players from my era who are ALIVE has no connection or care what ever UH does today athletically. When you feel all your pride and effort playing for Hawaii years ago has no bearing with today Coaches and teams today then what you have is what you see NOTHING from former bows being involved with UH financially, socially or voluntarily. It is just SAD to speak or even write about it as my fellow bows live their lives in seclusion with maybe a whisper that they were former players playing for UH as in all reality no one will care but maybe a coincidence letter coming from UH Foundation soliciting money for support to upper or lower campus. I even have GIVEN up on UH as through my recruiting efforts I signed interest cards from Santa Monica and LA High School football players ranging from qb’s, def. backs or tackles, running backs and line backers. Phoned Keith Upperesa who directed me to recruiting coordinator Phil Rausche who I left a detail message of who I was and what I was doing with office of admissions recruiting at Southern California College Fairs. NO return of phone call with “athletic interest cards” being filled out and NEVER reaching football offices. One thing for sure I saw with many of those athletes at San Diego State table, USC, UCLA, Perdue, Temple, Nevada Reno, San Jose State and Washington University. When UH line up this coming football season hope no opposing players from Santa Monica JC or Los Angeles High School are on the roster of any Hawaii opponent teams making a BIG play against the Warriors and keeping them from victory. No one will know but myself that I met them earlier and did my best for UH just to look at them but just like who I am to them today “a step child” who has no biological roots to the new Rainbow Warrior athletic family of 2014. Sad but very true !

Perhaps this is one “tradition” UH cannot shed; and it’s one that should be unshackled immediately!!
I’m just a fan, but can feel that some where there is a solution that will galzanize (like my spelling?) former students, former athletes, former coaches, former administrators, and current coaches, athletes, students, administrators (that went out when M.R.C. decided to “can” Chancellor Hinshaw).

#41–I remember Richard Parsons from my UH days–poised, articulate, very comfortable in his own skin and seemingly quite comfortable in Hawaii. This was in 1967, give or take a year, so before big time basketball, and before any African Americans to speak of, were a part of the UH or Rainbow athletic scene. If I remember correctly, he was from the East Coast. Looking back, I see his decision to come all the way to the islands for school as a sign of someone who was independent and not afraid of doing things differently, traits that obviously served him well later on. I was a mixed-up freshman when I met him, so his stature–that certain “it”–seemed even more impressive to me. UH has already recognized him as an outstanding alumnus, and I believe that he attended the ceremony.
Mahalo, Ralph! We’re really proud of our team over here: young, very scrappy bunch of mainly country kids on it. I assume we’ll be facing Punahou for the title…Go Warriors, I Mua Kamehameha!
BTW, someone talked about the old Honolulu Stadium a few days ago & how Ben Jay referred to it….I spent many a wonderful moment there: football games as a spectator & player, Hula Bowls, the Islanders, old stock car racing/demolition derbies, etc. For me, the outstanding memory of the old Termite Palace was its intimacy, just like the Rose Bowl…not a bad seat in the house, everybody seemed to know each other, & you didn’t have all the drunkards imposing their attitudes on others like today. The times were really much gentler in the ’50s, ’60s, & ’70s.
Just getting older, I guess…..

Loved watching the game – but not enough to go to Dillingham Field (or now at Sherwood Forest) to see them.
Aloha, Judge Mui…I didn’t know they played polo there, but I do remember Elvis did a SRO show at the stadium!
Hula Bowls were absolutely great then: Dick Butkus destroying people, Lance Alworth making ‘impossible’ catches, Merlin Olsen owning the trenches, Ohio State’s consensus All-America FB Bob Hayes making a game-wining 80-yard run, & of course the whole Filipino community coming out in force for one of their own, Roman Gabriel of NC State.
I’m really looking forward to this football season, it can’t begin soon enough. I only wish they could rebroadcast the games like they used to at 10:30pm for the outer island fans…I still have my VCR copies of Garrett Gabriel & the BYU games!
#77 Boya_jr: Mahalo for your kind post. I gather for me being the only ONE mainland ex-rainbow warrior involved with UH is like Gilligan on his Island but he has no castaways. That is why when I go RECRUIT for UH I always concentrate on the academic level of Southern California Students leaving the comfort zones of sunny side Los Angeles and having a wonderful opportunity to study in PARADISE and be part of a community of dedicated local Hawaiians who love their Island deep in tradition with family values. I can speak on this truthfully because When I played for the Bows back in the mid 70’s and early 80’s I LIVED among the people and saw first hand how they communicated with one another and share ALOHA with their food, music and stories with that flare of “pigeon talk” that put a smile on my face with every phrase of “bra, da kind, mudda, fadda” coming rapidly per minute. Just amusing and warms the heart !
Glad to hear of your recruiting efforts in Northern California as I am aware of the various Chapters and many events you good folks put on in Support of UH. We also have the accepted Hawaii luncheon here for incoming students to the Manoa Campus as it is good seeing the smiles and eagerness of future angelinos becoming wahines and kanes.

#78 Mr. A House Sir, Never ever thought that 33 years later being removed from my playing days in Hawaii and being very ACTIVE in UH both academically and athletically from the alumni side that I will see so much separation and distance between both upper and lower campus with no means of ever coming together. Both departments will USE one another when it comes down to their benefits but their need for “money money” from you to support their causes is always the fine print and will hear or see you again when that need comes around days, months or years from now. Heck, even a return phone call or e-mail reply is not certain courtesy coming from UH but rest assured when “money” is needed no hesitation what so ever explaining the amount or function where it is going in support towards upper or lower campus. I gather that is why being called an active ALUMNI from your University gets you recognition not so much what you have accomplish during or after UH but how your check book writes out “UH Foundation” with the larger amount getting to seat at the diamond table with your name engraved in the program. Money talks everything else WALKS !

Can’t find nothing of my playing days at UH as KGMB who televised Hawaii games does not exist today and all that footage just no where to be found only from loyal fans who taped it from their vhs or beta copying machines. IF you can come about any footage will be so GRATEFUL as I will pay you for your efforts to transfer too dvd IF possible ?
I am looking from 1975, 76, 77 or any fabulous five games. Will appreciate any Tsaiko out there that may read my request can aid in this project. Will PAY for your time and expertise !
