One last fling

Saturday’s Spring Fling will feature a scrimmage-like session instead of game. (There will be a scoring format to reward the defense for stops, turnovers, and so forth.)

The format was selected after the coaches concluded there probably were not enough available players to split the roster into two teams. For instance, there were only nine healthy offensive linemen participating in Monday’s spring practice. On Tuesday, Trayvon Henderson was at cornerback in 11-on-11 drills. (Actually, that was a good thing; he continues to have an impressive spring.)

The Spring Fling format will help UH in a more important way. The Rainbow Warriors essentially will have another practice.

The NCAA allows each team 15 spring practices. The Warriors, like nearly all schools, usually plan for 14 full practices and a spring game.Β Β The Warriors now can use the scrimmage to work in scenarios that they would incorporate in a usual practice. The fans get to see the Warriors in competitive situations; the coaches get to put in an another lesson plan.

This spring, the Warriors installed a new defensive scheme and expanded the offense. If they can exit without any significant injuries, this will have been a successful spring.

I long for the days of football practices with music and no rain.
Now the music is so muted, I’m that old grandpa saying: “What’s this song? I can barely hear it.” (OK, I actually, I am an old grandpa …)

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Maybe we should say “thank you for your service” rather than worry about whether X resigned, resigned in lieu of being fired, retired because he wanted to go back to old Virginny or whatever.

Does it really matter anymore? He’s gone.

To many people taking the “does it matter approach” is why UH is in such poor shape.

  15. oldtimer808 April 24, 2014 8:37 am

I think you are misunderstanding what #11 is saying. The coach is gone for what ever reason so let it be that and move on. I don’t think the reason why a coach leaves is any of our business but internally within the program. The reason UH has their problems is not because of the attitude that you are implying. Your generalization is off the mark.

  22. islandman April 24, 2014 9:14 am

Probably Rauscher was not retained because he wasn’t doing what Norm wanted with the tight ends etc. similar to Kaumeyer and Tuioti.

  23. jeezy33 April 24, 2014 9:20 am

    22. The fact that he was the “recruiting coordinator” and didn’t recruit was pretty laughable to me…

  24. What? April 24, 2014 9:31 am

#22 jeezy, obviously they can always do a better job at recruiting, but do you think they are bringing in the right kind of student-athletes so far, despite this situation?

Would the player in question be Jacob McEnroe?

  28. jeezy33 April 24, 2014 9:39 am

    24. I was referring specifically to Rauscher. From my knowledge, he didn’t bring in any recruits. I think other guys are doing a good job bringing in the right players…. I think the weakness of our recruiting lies offensively where the only coach with experience is Norm Chow and as a HC, you don’t recruit as much. Wynn didn’t recruit at all. Naeole is pretty new to the game and signed 1 O lineman. There were a bunch of solid RBs available and we didnt really upgrade. Still haven’t brought in a big time QB. Reilly hasn’t played in 2 years so he’s a mystery.

  29. What? April 24, 2014 9:46 am

    Thanks jeezy

  30. jm2375 April 24, 2014 10:02 am

Congrats to Taylor Averill (1st team!) and Brook Sedore (Honorable Mention) on their All-American selections!

  31. Whats up April 24, 2014 10:11 am

While I agree with jeezy that offensively recruiting for a big time QB hasn’t developed yet. With incoming 4 star Aaron Zwahlen coming in from his mission next year, he will not have played in 2 years just like Reilly hasn’t. However, there are improvements on the offense all over the place but at QB. The offensive coaches are young and have to rely on Chow name for recruiting. But the recruiting on the offensive side of the ball hasn’t been terrible at all, Hawaii just needs to find a starting QB that can move the offense. And thats the gold egg for football at all levels from Pop Warner to the NFL, finding a QB that can run your offense.

While I think the defensive secondary is still a concern and the team learning the whole new Clune defensive system is a more of a concern. The thing we learned about new defensive schemes is it takes a while for the players to learn it a game speed. For the most part the offense is going into it’s 3rd year and the offense players know how to play it at game speed, except for the QB’s which has limited game speed reps. And the QB situation will pan itself out but the defense has to get up to game speed as a unit ASAP or it doesn’t matter who’s at QB. We learned from last season that you can’t win games when your defense gives more than 600+ yards and ton of points than your offense is putting out 500+ and tons of points but is just short.

  32. jeezy33 April 24, 2014 10:22 am

    31. Problem is we are in WIN NOW mode. And Hawaii is implementing new systems on both sides of the ball. Bringing in QBs that have sat out for years. No guarantee that they will be good… We currently have a very unproven and inexperienced QB who is running the 1st unit. We have a very young O line. Those guys might be talented, but not as experienced as other teams and not physically as strong yet because of the youth.

I agree that the recruiting hasn’t been terrible… But it is very unproven as of yet and the only guys who stands out to me who have potential to make a big impact is Keith Kirkwood and Marcus Kemp. But both look like they have a ways to go. Compared to where Trevor Davis was as a FR. The RBs we have are not as good as the other MWC opponents after Iosefa. And Iosefa is a Mack recruit.

I actually like the talent on D. Scheme and pass rush to me were the 2 big issues… Nequan and Maggitt were left on a island playing man coverage all the time. We didn’t have a good pass rush either so once QBs broke the pocket to run, game over with our DBs backs faced towards him. I think the defense will be a strength this year. Everyone is mature, physically strong, and experience is there.

  33. Rodney April 24, 2014 10:31 am

    What about the USC Qb
    Any hope we get chance
    him comming.To me he

    Good morning everyone!

Star-Advertiser breaking news reports Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is expanding to Texas. Seems unusual that a local burger place goes to Texas, but we know they have Al’s and tommui’s endorsement. Good enough for me. πŸ™‚

  35. islandman April 24, 2014 11:22 am

    33. USC QB is like Graham -a drop back QB, we already have a Graham.

  36. Whats up April 24, 2014 11:53 am

    Jeezy,

I disagree with you on 2 points, the O line is not young. Hawaii only really lost Miovale from the O line and the rest of the line is still intact and plenty of them have game experience under there belts so there is depth there as well. If you tell me next season in 2015 the Oline is young and inexperienced I would agree with losing so many after the upcoming 2014 season.

The new Hawaii defense under Clune is not a proven commodity, they haven’t had to play a real opponet at live game speed. While I hope the defense kicks okole from game 1, I will keep as a area of major concern since so many of the same players return from last years porous defense. While there are some studs on the Dline and LB’s I just can’t discount the learning curb to that equation and it will take a few games for the defense to be stout (Let’s say around the FCS Northern Iowa game). But that could also be said about the QB situation as well, we might have to wait until the FCS game to find out who the real starting QB will be.

As for your comment about Iosefa being a Mack recruit, we have to keep in mind that Chow was evaluating and cleaning house and decided to keep some of Macks recruits that proved they belonged playing FBS level football at UH. The ones that didn’t are not at Hawaii anymore.

I hope Chow evaluation about Macks QB recruit Woolsey is right and I like Woolsey and what he brings to the table. And I think Woolsey could have developed to be a good QB under Rolo but we will never know that for sure. Honestly, if Chow is giving Woosley most of the reps with the first team over Macks recruit Higgins and Chow’s own recruit Taylor Graham (shoulder surgery). He is showing that dispite what some fans think that he will only play his own recruits, Chow is evaluating all the players and it’s up to the players to earn playing time.

This is Woolsey 3rd year at Hawaii and being developed under Norm Chow and Jordan Wynn last season will pay off for this season. And while we complain about recruiting, we tend to forget what we have on the roster that Chow has kept from Macks recruits and his own incoming recruits. I have to believe Chow and recently Wynn seen something special in Woolsey to kept him on the team from 2012 and now getting 1st team reps in spring ball. All of us are probably blowing up the starting QB situation way out there, when it doesn’t need to be. I doubt Wittek comes to Hawaii over Texas, so Woolsey just might be the answer that was right in front of our faces the whole time.

  37. jeezy33 April 24, 2014 12:08 pm

    36. It’s possible Hawaii starts 3 FR. in John Waa, Elijah Tupai, and Dejon Allen. How is that not young? We don’t even know the starting 5 yet. But Kody Afusia and Ben Clarke are the only 2 upperclassman who have starting jobs. The guys who have experience aren’t very good…
If you compare that to other O line units, it is very young and inexperienced.

Clune may not be a proven commodity, but the defense that Utah St. ran while he was there had success. We already know what Aranda did at Hawaii with limited talent. Clune has more talent and I see the defense looking up. Beau Yap, Jeremy Castro, Moses Samia, Kennedy Tulimasealii, Jerrol Garcia Williams, Trayvon Henderson, Nequan Phillips, Julian Gener are talented players. The scheme sets them up nicely. I even think Lataimua will benefit a ton by playing a 3-4 scheme.

I understand the optimism on Woolsey but until he can do it with the lights on, QB play is always going to be a big question mark….

  38. whitey April 24, 2014 12:13 pm

Hawaii needs to offer this kid. He is going to blow up his senior season… one of the most explosive athletes I’ve seen in Hawaii since Pilares from a strength and speed stand point. Malepeai will be the big recruit in 2016… But this kid is the best in 2015 in my opinion…

trojan, stay low profile and blend in with the background. get too many borotes.

  45. PurpleMaple April 24, 2014 1:44 pm

Boola…Your concerns appear justified. The secondary lacks proven depth. On the plus side, I feel the new 3-4 scheme with players recruited to improve the pass rush should allow the D-backs to make more plays this coming season. Last season they were simply picked apart when the opposing QBs had a field day standing around without pressure. Or they simply rolled out of the pocket to complete key 3rd down plays. Just my view. One last thought – the Huskies appear vulnerable having lost QB Keith Price and RB Bishop Sankey. Their secondary is even younger and less experienced than ours.

  46. st. anthony trojan April 24, 2014 1:53 pm

  49. boolakanaka April 24, 2014 2:21 pm

46…I am sort of old skool in the attributes of a good sports team, that is to say, if you are strong up the middle, it allows you to show the finer elements of your team on the outside, e.g. speed and finesse. That said, I want to see superior play especially at our safeties…..which in my guesstimation, in this era of an emphasis on passing, becomes an inflection point for success of any team.

  50. gobows April 24, 2014 2:25 pm

Will trayvon henderson get a serious look at corner?

    49. Ikaika more of a slot than St juste… He really is closest thing I’ve seen to Chad Owens as far as size, speed, strength … Think he put up 185 26-27 time day a recent combine .. Squats over 400. Can cut hard… Runs clean routes and has nice hands for a junior in high school. His only knock is height but he’s explosive and strong …

  58. al April 24, 2014 2:52 pm

ikaika ran a 4.55 two years ago?

  59. Jeezy33 April 24, 2014 3:01 pm

    59. Based on Hawaii combine results yes.. Ewaliko 2 years older ran 4.59
Stubblefield 2 year older ran 4.51..
The kid can fly… The 35 inch vert tells u what kind of athlete he is…

  76. oldtimer808 April 24, 2014 9:29 pm

#76 That’s why we play the game. In 1955 our 27 UH football players went to Nebraska after getting demolished the year before. I’m sure no one gave Hawaii a chance against Nebraska. Hawaii beat Nebraska. We went up to Washington in the 70s and no one gave us a chance and we came away with a win. Iowa came to Hawaii and no one thought we would beat the number 1 ranked team at that time and we won. So that’s why the game is played.

  77. st. anthony trojan April 24, 2014 10:44 pm
