Rec in effect

It might take a while, but sometimes UH gets it right:

new

The Rainbow Warriors complete the first half of spring training with today’s seventh practice. (There are 14 practices, not including the 15th day used for the Spring Fling.)

Once again, quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey and Jeremy Higgins are expected to be live targets once they leave the pocket.

Once again, it will be a dramatic finish for the volleyball Warriors. To qualify for the MPSF playoffs, they need to beat second-ranked Pepperdine tonight and hope BYU can defeat UCLA.

The sad news is that the original Ka Leo building has left us.
    Greater good, I suppose.

    Good morning lurkers worldwide.
Rained before the sun came up.
As Guy Hage says, “Best weather in the planet”.
    Camelot…with a new UH gym.

  9. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2014 8:41 am

I have fond memories of my Ka Leo years, even though we used manual typewriters, actually cut (with scissors) and pasted to edit, and tried to place “None of the above” bumper stickers on the ceiling. Ah, good times.

  10. Stephen Tsai April 12, 2014 8:43 am

Ka Leo does a really good job with its on-line product. Clean, easy to read, and lots of videos.
    Future looks bright.

  11. tommui April 12, 2014 9:28 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I remember spending a lot of time in Ka Leo – mostly in the dark – room, that is.

Great people – Agsalud, Tets Sonoda, Benny Woods, the sports editor – name slips my mind but had a great classic record collection. He did occasional golf columns after he retired from the Advertiser.

  12. Old School Dave April 12, 2014 10:00 am

Perhaps the Waterhouse Training Center can be expanded with the closure of the old fitness center in the Stanley?

  13. Warrior Dave April 12, 2014 10:31 am

    The rec center looks great!

Btw ST, is it due to injury the Higgins and Woosley are getting most of the reps? I find that puzzling.

It’s good that the UH finally got a recreation center for the students…Now, the athletes can have their own dedicated facilities and the general students have theirs.

Yea….DR should do an article on their web site…

For gosh sakes…no matter what ur education level is these days…if you are employed
n receive a pay check…one can improve daily his/her knowledge base…just by visiting pages.

Just go and visit ne big 12 school and or AP top 25 poll….look n see what most SPORT DEPTS.
have in common n where it is located etc…..n copy…dang don’t need a degree for that….

Igave up looking at UH site…cuz to messy….(to busy)…n very hard to find….scores etc in real time…don’t know if they are even posted….but I would think on a daily basis that would
be the ‘page’ most would want to visit…n would receive the most ‘hits’……

On another…why can’t they start a live ‘update’ for their sports fans, sent to there cell phones…
especially scores from major sports….they are free apps now I am sure 4 android…dang be
nice 4 Tsaiko’s to be in Vegas say n have update scores on txt message…or fishing for salmon
only to loose the ‘big one’ cuz of txt score update…he he…or maybe they have already…
but I not get the message yet….what say you Mr. Jay ? ?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ….punchbowl….

Might not mean anything…….but still good to see…..some of the top local HS Class of 2015 prospects…..Canton Kaumatule, Rex Manu, Solomon Matautia, Fred Ulu-Perry, Jordan Agasiva, etc……in attendance today at UH’s Junior Day.

  28. gobows April 12, 2014 2:28 pm

    25 saj

uhathletics no mo live updates, but sometimes they get yesterdays update. pretty sad since the internet kinda sorta started in hawaii.

  29. islandman April 12, 2014 2:57 pm

    # 25 – Most of the mainland college athletics websites that i visit look similar to UH’s or similar to each other. E.g. UCLA, Cal Poly, Alabama, BYU, Connecticut etc.

Must be standard website software or formats used.

  30. Ballpicker April 12, 2014 3:03 pm

Happy Birthday “Kid”. Imua my friend.

That’s a sporty looking Rec Center. The students should get good use of the facility.

  31. boya_jr April 12, 2014 3:06 pm

I think the Pac-12, most (10 of 12) of the schools have websites that under some standard created by the conference. USC’s website seems to be original still. Great thing about the Pac-12 is that they have some “management consultants” to help schools with marketing, ticket pricing, game day experience, etc. I really wish UH could get some of these resources. I know there are talented individuals who love the univ and state who donate their talents and perspectives, thank you to those people.

  32. st. anthony trojan April 12, 2014 3:28 pm

    # 33….boya…me agree…there is a ‘ton’ of talent on this site here…I see it every day…
and a ‘ton’ more at Na Koa….n the sad thing is…most it not all would volunteer….

problem is, no one ask…n no one seems to care…attitude seems to be up there is…just do what
    is asked…get ur check…n aloha..

there are many exceptions as ST reported a while back…

give coach credit…nice to hear noga is at practice n games…n as reported mr. riola…
at least he is not in freds image n close locker n field ‘off-limits’ to past players etc…

  33. al April 12, 2014 3:47 pm

you’d think…with the athletic program so heavily dependent upon football’s revenues that the ncaa would expand sprinpg ball to 25 practices and allow football two additional weeks prior to the start of a season that also expands by two weeks as compared to now.

    provide a better product,
reduce injuries with a more physically prepared athelte,
    allow for proper byes,
    facilitate a playoff system,
more money to pay for lessor sports to exist,
more money to maintain an ncaa governing body.

  34. tommui April 12, 2014 5:13 pm

    #35 AL:

Good idea but you got to remember they are students first – notwithstanding Northwestern’s attempts at unionization.

  35. boolakanaka April 12, 2014 5:18 pm

35 & 36….I think we can all agree that when a student-athlete is spending 50+ hours a week, in specific activities related to their respective sport, in season, academics are going to suffer.

  36. al April 12, 2014 5:26 pm

in response to the well regarded and respected honorable judge mui, keeping the students in tune with the sport which ” funds” their education by having more opportunities to hone their craft may also reflect in their due diligence in the classroom…you think?

i was beaming with pride at the announcement of our academic achievements by the football team as a whole.

good job by our student athletes for their performances in the “squared stadium” a.k.a. classroom, as well as their earnest efforts on the gridiron. goes to show that not only are we recruiting quality athletes but great students as well.

  37. Boya_jr April 12, 2014 6:22 pm

I’m really happy about the fitness center next to campus center. I think will be a great incentive for more students to hang out on campus

  38. Andrew April 12, 2014 6:34 pm

Of course they finish it after I graduate. I remember this thing starting to get built when I was there and that was a while ago.

  39. turfwar April 12, 2014 7:05 pm

Kapakahi I too was happy to see the best of the best show up for Junior Day at today’s practice. I know Rex is a commit to Stanford and Canton will also probably go there but it says something that they were going thru the process and giving Norm and the staff a chance to show them around. If we somehow manage to sign Soloman, Agasiva, Auwae, and Savea from this class I would be ecstatic. Any idea who the tall white kid hanging with the Leilehua kids was? He must have stood around 6’8″ and a solid 240 or so. He looked taller than Canton, who by the way impressed me in that even after most all of the juniors went in for lunch he stayed around till the end of practice and mingled with some of the boys. Did not see Fehoko today but he may have been there.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DA PUNCHBOWL KID !!! from me and Barbara!

  43. balut April 12, 2014 8:44 pm

Nice looking Rec center! now take a look at the yet to be finished Ching Complex on lower campus, still unfinished ,still looks the same as it did 6mo ago, it is a terrible example of the type of building contractors doing business with the state. Shameful, totally incompetent builder ,Iida Construction, they should have their license taken away and refund the tax payers the for the delays , 1000.00 per day everyday since last year and counting! if this is local contracting at its best ,bring in a mainland crew that can get it done on time and on budget. This is bull shet

  44. jeezy33 April 12, 2014 8:53 pm

Can never get too discouraged when locals commit to other schools. If Hawaii does a good job recruiting, then good chance lot of kids will come back anyway. I think that was an issue with Coach Mack. He took things too personal at times that closed the door for kids to come back home. I think everyone is aware of the Epenesa incident.

I will closely be following the Arizona QB battle. I think Anu Solomon might be the perfect fit to run a spread offense here in Hawaii. If he doesn’t win the job, that would be a prime target.

  45. kapakahi April 12, 2014 9:15 pm

    #41,

Saw Auwae and Savea there too. They both definitely have the length and height.

Yup…..was trying to identify the Leilehua kid too. Already solidly built. Looked like a taller thinner Luke Ingram.

Don’t know if any Red Raiders were there…..but Reggie was there……supporting Richard.

    Fehoko & Uluave were MIA.

  46. KannakAttack April 12, 2014 9:23 pm

Yeah a lot of great looking kids out there for Junior Day! I seen Beau Reilly out there with the QB’s… another kid too. Who is he ST?
