Warrior volleyball: 7 things of note

Writers use “improbable” as a default word to describe, well, improbable outcomes. But, yes, the volleyball Warriors did construct an improbable victory in defeating nemesis (another default word) Brigham Young last night.

The Cougars were No. 2 nationally, poised to win the MPSF’s title outright, and were beating the kukai out of the Warriors in the first two sets. “There was only one team on the court,” outside hitter Siki Zarkovic said.

And then the Warriors rallied, and kept rallying, to end a seven-match losing streak in this series.

Here are seven things of note:

1. The outcome moved the Warriors into a tie with UCLA for eighth place in the MPSF with three regular-season matches remaining. Only the top eight teams qualify for the MPSF playoffs.

2. But wait, the Warriors actually are a match up on UCLA, according to the tie-breaker formula, having swept the season series.

3. Once again, Charlie Wade stuck with players struggling statistically. Zarkovic had an atrocious start, with two kills and  six errors in the first two sets. But he hit  .450 in the final three sets and finished with 12 kills.  Jace Olsen also had a pedestrian line — eight kills, seven errors, .038 hitting — but his energetic presence was much needed on the court. “You have to dance with the one you brought,” Wade said.

4. Not sure who does the accounting, but the in-house attendance appeared to be more than the announced turnstile count of 2,501.

5. There was no television coverage. But your blog host did take video of Nick West’s kill at aloha point. Here’s the video: Aloha point video.

6. So maybe the Rubberband Man didn’t really retire. Click on this: Hackbarth video

7. It’s aloha ball for five seniors — West, Olsen, Johann Timmer, Joby Ramos and Aniefre Etim-Thomas — who will be playing their final home match tonight.

    Aloha all! Go Warriors!

  3. midnight April 5, 2014 7:55 am

    3. Isn’t football wonderful!

  4. midnight April 5, 2014 7:56 am

Hectic times here in Arlington, Tx. A lot of festivities and hype for the Final Four.

  5. midnight April 5, 2014 7:59 am

I am just going to relax at home, and watch the games on TV. That way I don’t have to buck the crowds, and pay the high parking fees. Tickets are expensive, and they had a big aticle in the morning paper about “scalping”.

  6. midnight April 5, 2014 8:03 am

Final Four is a no-beer event; except the “privileged boxes”. A lot of work went to converting the AT&T Stadium into a basketball format, with bleachers all around the court, and cameras every where.

  7. whitey April 5, 2014 8:05 am

good morning tsaikos. said that already on a previous post. oh, well. good morning.

  8. midnight April 5, 2014 8:09 am

There were a couple of storms, and tornadoes that went through Texas, but the path of the weather was north of the Metroplex – DFW area. There were several touchdowns, and spotty damage. The local stations are really good in tracking the storms nowadays so they broadcast storm and tornado warnings to the minute. Really good for the general public – they also have tornado sirens which go off when conditions might be dangerous.

  9. midnight April 5, 2014 8:11 am

Aloha Whitey! Back to household chores and lurking.

  10. Stephen Tsai April 5, 2014 8:11 am

    Whitey:
    It’s still a good morning.
And — cross our fingers and hope to spit — it is the hope the weather still will be nice for this morning’s football practice.

First day of pads (shells)? No, no, no. I’ve been wearing mine all week in honor of the return of football, albeit short lived.

I must say that I am happy there is being football talked about again.

  14. kev-1 April 5, 2014 8:41 am

Could the men’s v-ball team be playing their best of the season in preparation for a long post season run?

  15. kev-1 April 5, 2014 8:49 am

ST . . . in Ferd’s article this morning about Unga, he mentioned that he decided to postpone going on his mission. Do you know if that means he is still planning on going during college?

  42. whitey April 5, 2014 1:35 pm

counselor and haleakala, she has an excellent playing partner today which is a huge plus. She and Christie are good friends, so that is why I kinda expected her to do well today.

    solid thru 12.

  44. whitey April 5, 2014 1:45 pm

cristies had an eagle and mw had a birdie on 11. looks like both are truly helping each other.

  45. 76south April 5, 2014 1:46 pm

On the last blog JEZZY wrote about Solomon Matuatia from Campbell. Here’s a little tibit of info, he’s also a pretty good QB! When he played for the Ewa Beach Cardinals back in 2009 he was the QB, Triston Pebria (Kapolei) was the running back and his WRs were Bronsen Ader (Mililani) and Issac Hurd (Campbell). That was one helluva team! Hope we can land him!

  46. whitey April 5, 2014 1:47 pm

got go do some errands, so keep on cheering for mw. and also the softbows, basebows, vbows. go rainbows.

  47. turfwar April 5, 2014 2:09 pm

During 1-on-1’s this morning a player went down and was taken away in an ambulance. ST can the player be named and what was the initial diagnosis.

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid April 5, 2014 2:26 pm

Practice looked great for only the third time out. Players look in better shape and in terms of execution, much better than last year at this time. Both Offense and Defense had good and bad moments, but the potential is there. Lakalaka has slimmed down and added muscle, he looked good out there, quicker and shiftier. Ioesfa is a beast, Muraoka still has that great acceleration to the hole. All the RBs look good.

Defense looks like they are adjusting, but an offensive player noted afterwords that they are hitting hard, playing with intensity. They’ll get better and better as they adjust to the new schemes.

LB Manoa was taken by ambulance from the field.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid April 5, 2014 2:26 pm

    *Iosefa

  50. nutmegger April 5, 2014 3:08 pm

How did the QBs look? Glad to hear O say the D is hitting hard.

  51. Haleakala April 5, 2014 3:22 pm

Michelle tied with Lexi Thommpson at -10 going into tomorrow’s final round.
UConn upset,Florida 63- 53 to play for the title.
I hope that David Manoa is not badly injured.

  52. kapakahi April 5, 2014 4:02 pm

Never good…..when practice is stopped…..to give prayers for a fallen comrade…..

  53. kapakahi April 5, 2014 4:10 pm

Injury happened while executing run offense against run defense 7-on-7s.

  54. JLO April 5, 2014 4:11 pm

I enjoyed watching today’s practice , they worked hard !
Stephen can you post some pictures please

way to go michelle. 4 birdies and no bogeys.

  57. Blah blah blah April 5, 2014 5:09 pm

    2nd

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid April 5, 2014 5:10 pm

nutmegger – QBs also looked “ahead of last year”. Some great throws and catches but a few dropped balls and bad throws. Woolsey is good scrambler and throws well, Graham had good longs balls. Lots of work ahead for all of them QBs and receivers.

The general consensus among the 10 or so fans I spoke with was that the team looked good, especially in light of this being so early. The off season conditioning is showing early on.

  59. whitey April 5, 2014 5:11 pm

The warriors appear to becoming a team earlier than expected and my best to the fallen warrior. go warriors.

  60. whitey April 5, 2014 5:34 pm

dang it is truly now april madness.

  61. Da Punchbowl Kid April 5, 2014 5:53 pm

BTW- In undefended passing drills, all the QBs definitely looked a lot sharper than what I recall from last year this time. I think people are going to be surprised at how different Lakalaka looks.

  62. Boya_jr April 5, 2014 6:31 pm

Get well soon David Manoa. Aloha from the Bay Area.

  63. NorthShoreFan April 5, 2014 8:01 pm

  77. islandman April 6, 2014 7:04 am

How come in today’s paper, the standings show a “y” next to Long Beach St. and USC ? The y means they have clinched a berth in the playoffs.

  78. 3-Prong April 6, 2014 8:13 am

maddog50: Nice! Was eyeing a green one for the same reason, till the Mrs told me 4 Webers were enough. Hehe

  79. whitey April 6, 2014 8:18 am

some may say, we don’t cover enough uh sports, which may be true, but look at byu vb, 2nd ranked in the nation and not a word in their local paper. all you see is basketball and football.

  80. whitey April 6, 2014 8:47 am

duffer, you got a pretty good boys golf team. 4 in the top 5 for the mil individual race.
