A running start
One of the tricks of controlled publicity is to announce transactions on Friday afternoon because that evening’s newscasts and the next day’s newspaper editions are the least watched and read, respectively.
That’s why yesterday’s timing is curious, because Wayne Moses’ hiring as running back coach is good news that UH should have celebrated widely.
With a small window — Chris Wiesehan resigned a little more than two weeks ago to coach Temple’s offensive lineman — UH was able to fill a vacancy in time for Tuesday’s start of spring training.
Moses is a respected coach in the college and pro ranks. He has worked for three schools in the past three years; the moves were prompted by each head coach’s termination. The optimist’s view is he is experienced in adapting to new programs. That’s key for a UH program that had to adjust to Wiesehan’s surprising departure.
It should be an easy adjustment for Moses, who coached the running backs at USC and UCLA when Norm Chow was the offensive coordinator at both schools. The relationship will remain the same. Chow, unofficially, is the Rainbow Warriors’ offensive coordinator.
Moses’ greatest value will be in the offense’s meetings. Last year, Wiesehan filled the void of wise soul on a staff of young coaches (Chris Naeole, Phil Rauscher and GAs Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews). Wiesehan, who had worked with Chow at UCLA, provided wisdom, calmness and diplomacy in those meetings. Moses — older, more experienced, and with deeper ties to Chow — should offer the same intangibles. That will be good for Wynn, who will have expanded play-calling duties as the new quarterback coach, and Naeole, who enters his second year as o-line coach.
It is a solid move that comes, so to speak, just in time.
ah
‘Ekahi !!
First!
Rats. ‘elua… 🙁
Aloha Kakahiaka. Go Warriors !
First in line after al and Pupule… 🙂
Good morning brother. Pupule, we must be related.
Morning Tsaikos!
Aloha coach Moses!!
Why was Rauscher not retained?
The only difference between Al and Ah is jk
Good morning everyone. Was coach Moses the RB coach when Reggie Bush was at USC?
sorry…pupule. next time less letters would do it.
Welcome to the Warriors Coach Moses. (Gotta love the name.)
GO WARRIORS!!!
st…what about the ” i”?
dpk…the difference is that’s his nickname not his mentality.
(((oops))))
Without Rauscher the only coach yelling will be Demo. Chow’s staff was really changed in two years.
Much needed rain pouring down in the Bay Area. I’m parked in a Safeway parking lot, just got my UH football news fix. Welcome Coach Moses! We have some young talent on the team who will need to step up when our 4 year starter Joey graduates.
Moses, may lead UH running backs thru troubling waters…
#12 – there’s a punchline in that question somewhere… as for the “ah”, next time I get chance to be first, I will take a lesson from the Ninja Lurker and simply post “A”. 😆
13 – It is what it is, brother. 😉
boya jr, remember the time u were a broke college student and someone spiked me w hard alcohol. u drank me at the usc game and was fugggged up
good morning tsaikos and very nice to see that everyone is in a laughing mood. hard to beat laughter.
one of the early ones missing is the counselor.
#9 – According to my friend WikiP., Todd McNair was Reggie Bush’s RB coach at SC.
Coach Moses has some good ones to work with at RB. Can’t wait to watch spring practice.
Mr 40, I remember vaguely, but the context sounds like I was with u. My memory not too good for individual games cuz us UH students went to many. The spiked 40 incident I most remember happened the night before the BYU game when UH scored 70+, I had to lie down in the hot sun outside Aloha (day game) cuz I wasn’t feeling too good. The Zippys Saimin came out. After game dorm parties, early 2000’s the heyday of nightlife in Honolulu, and UH games with huge student tailgates. And good football (some down years), but the culture was great on campus. Thanks for the memories.
Looked up team rushing statistics going back to 2004 (as far back as ESPN posted) for the teams that Wayne Moses was the RB coach. In case anyone is interested . . .
Year / School / Yards / Rank (Hawaii’s rank in comparison)
2004 / Pittsburgh / 1173 / 102 (Hawaii ranked 97)
2005 / Stanford / 1015 / 113 (Hawaii ranked 112)
2006 / St. Louis Rams / 1805 / 17
2007 / St. Louis Rams / 1527 / 25
2008 / UCLA / 993 / 117 (Hawaii ranked 103)
2009 / UCLA / 1490 / 94 (Hawaii ranked 105)
2010 / UCLA / 2107 / 44 (Hawaii ranked 97)
2011 / UCLA / 2497 / 26 (Hawaii ranked 111)
2012 / Idaho / 1056 / 120 (Hawaii ranked 114)
I know that the foundation of a good running game is a good offensive line, so these statistics should be taken with a grain of salt. But, there are some really bad years here and a couple of really good ones (only ranked higher than Hawaii in 3 of these years). Make of it what you will. I still like the fact that he comes with experience at big schools and the NFL.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII1!
The running game is what opens up Coach Chow’s offense – he said that even before the season opened. When Joey went down, we had difficulties until our freshmen began to catch on. This sentence has nothing to do with Coach Chris Wiesehan’s competency – who had his hands full teaching people who was new to the D1 and injuries didn’t help.
Lucky we got Coach Moses to step in before Spring!
And good morning to the usual suspects.
Boya, I remember you was too chang to chip in for booze and asked the party throwers to just buy you a 40. You gave them $2, drank your 40 then drank a bunch of other stuff after. Eventually people got wise and spiked your 40, hope you aren’t so chang these days.
Ho brah, welcome to the Tsai blog!
a pretty complete bio for wayne moses can be found here

Weren’t you the guy who at the LaTech game in Ruston in 2007 started the BCS BCS BCS chant that was prophetic. You also threw a toilet paper roll 50 yards at Aloha Stadium. Legend.
To further control negative publicity, notices are given before and after major, holidays. Who reads the paper before and after Thanksgiving? The husbands are thinking about food and the wives have their minds on the Black Friday sales
Mr. 40, we’re going to play basketball in the rain by my house with the guy who brought the “H” sign to the College Gameday in Michigan back in 2007. Too bad, you can’t play, need one more for 2 on 2.

dpk…no subliminal message.
ah-i-j-k-l.
get it?
18 re: 13…no pun intended bull. you know i love you.
bj and 40… no beefing okay.
I was looking at the keyboard and the J and K were between the H and L.
In 2008 UCLA was still using the West Coast offense and only later started converting to the pistol. It wasn’t until 2010 and 2011 they really started going full pistol. They went from 379 running plays (averaging 2.61 yards) in 2008 to 552 running plays (averaging 4.52 yards) in 2011.
Yet, like any decent pistol offense that is run first and run heavy it will usually rack it up in total yards on the ground. But, as mentioned, without decent blocking schemes and ability to execute, the run game will suffer as was evident with Nevada last season, in addition to a porous defense.
Good morning everyone!
39th
Welcome to Coach Moses!

Sorry Braddha Boya, the height of nightlife was the early 1980s: spats, Bobby’s , Mooses, the Wave, Pink Caddilac, Jillys, Red Lions, Scruples, etc….and on and on. Almost all open to 4, and as players, Brudhha no lines, no cover, and many free drinks…….my liver is sore just thinking about it.
Boolakanaka, I bet the early 80’s were great and as a playa, probably even more fun.
Lot’s of places in the early 2000’s came and gone, some still here b/c when I come back to visit, I stop by. Anyways, there was much to do back then as there is now. We would always go to UH football games as students. It was an in thing (go out Friday night, go to the game on Sat, sometimes if not too tired go out after game). That was the culture (of course, we heard the previous generations getting away with more things. Years go by, and things get more strict, legal liability blah blah blah).
Here’s my shortened list (note: I graduated from UH in 4 years and worked, so I had balance)
Monday: Venus
Tuesday: Red Lions
Weds: D&B (1/2 off drinks, dancing on the roof)
Thursday: Blue Room, Oceans
Friday & Saturday: Oceans (23 & over), The W, Aquas, Hyatt Regency, Garden of Saigon, China House, Pipeline Cafe, World Cafe, Mai Tais, Don Hos, Blue Tropics, Pago Pago, Dorm Parties, UH Football
Sunday: If Monday holiday, Venus went off
Obviously, I’m blending the years together, but this was early 2000’s, the heyday as I saw it. Many nights spent with Mr. 40.
I went where the hot ladies were out and about. Many were UH students. Met my wife at UH. That’s why UH is dear to my heart.

Boya, I had no balance. Graduated on the almost 7 year plan–in fact, Deans office called me to let me know I needed to finish–I graduated with over 180 credits. The original van wilder.
After most games, we went to Red Lion, then either scruples and then maybe the Wave. Mid-week was always Mooses and then Bobby’s. And Buddha the lines were choke, around the block. Us, back door or kitchen. We knew every Samoan door security named Jumior. Didn’t hurt my roomies were the Kafentzis brothers. Man, we had a great time….and the wahines, makes me almost want to cry and talk a couple B12 tablets….lol
#45 I love the story! You turned out A-OK in my book. College is about growing.
Aloha everybody. Finally got a chance to catch up on the blog after 2/3 busy days. Thank you for the birthday wishes. I had a great time. Once again, mahalo, mahalo nui loa.
UH softball team sweeps UC Riverside. 8-7; 4-1.

So it sounds like Coach Moses’ has stepped into many coaching situations where the next year the HC gets replaced.
Chow haters secretly celebrating this? =P
“That would be telling.”
Let’s go bows (wildcats)
in my best Alfred Hitchcock imitation….Guud Evening…Tsaikos….bootiful day.
Close one for da BaseBows…great sweep for Na Wahine…IMUA!
Boolakanaka, love your list at 41, you can also throw in Fast Eddie’s and the 23rd Step on the East Side. Fast Eddie’s was also open till 4am.
Another job and opportunity that could have gone to a talented, qualified, former warrior wasted again by the “genius” norm.
Fei Jei apparently does not like Coach Chow! As he had made this abundantly clear ad infinitum and ad nostium.

kinda pricey.
Tom. Lots of people don’t like losing; some do, like you. Norm doesn’t know how to win. See exhibit 1. First year record. See also, exhibit 2. Second year record. I don’t mind that you tolerate mediocrity and losing. That’s your prerogative. Enjoy losing. Let the rest of us have our say, is all I am saying.
*burp*
Had a great dinner of Serbian cuisine tonight cooked by Coach Milan Zarkovic. He’s a great chef, funny and all-around great guy. He’s also a great coach. I look forward to having him here for the next few years.
Completed my annual donaton to Na Koa on line…..its good to be a Warrior!!!!
first at daybreak, good morning tsaikos. hahahahaaaa
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Good morning Whitey!
Need more people like maddog – see his #61
morning counselor.
counselor, yes, true, tsaikos like maddog50 are the warrior’s best friend, but there are some who do more than that and stay at an almost stealth position in helping the rainbow warrior get finances from trusts and wills. somehow, uh misses da boat on these stealths and like i have said in the past, uh alumni and foundation program is truly small time.
Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
imagine if every UH alumni donated just $100 each year…maybe we need a virtual running total being displayed 24-7….
Good Morning whitey-san and Judge Mui! Top of the morning to you!
You too NSF!
Any Max sightings yet!!!!!
good morning dpk, nsf, and rodney. it is a beautiful sunday am and we are truly blessed to live in hawaii nei.
