At 5:05 this morning, strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer arrived on the Manoa campus.
Five minutes later, head coach Norm Chow showed up.
By 5:30, the majority of defensive players had gathered, wearing “Rise” T-shirts.
And by 6, when Beemer’s whistle sounded, the Rainbow Warriors were ready for Saturday’s first training session.

It’s hard to describe someone “appearing to be stronger,” but Keelan Ewaliko appears to be stronger. He appears to have a future as a hard-hitting safety.
I’d like to see Keelan play. The last time I saw him play was the game against Farrington when he ran the ball in for a TD on the last play of the game.

When I was a kid, i complained about having an itchy arm. I guess I brushed against poison ivy, or something. The camp counselor said: Would you rather have an itchy arm or no arm at all?
Even then I thought: Hey, Confucius, that’s stupid.
But, yes, I’d rather have a slow drip and itchy arm than the alternative.
There is also surgery. I finally had it a couple of months ago. The meds didn’t work well for me. I don’t have to deal with the aggravation for a few years. Yes, that thing will keep on growing and the solution may not be permanent.

Re: Taxes – Have a family friend who lives near Vancouver, Washington – no state income tax (but over 9% sales tax). Does his shopping in nearby Portland, OR – no sales tax. Best of two worlds.
In spite of their high sales tax, Washington State doesn’t tax groceries.

OK. I’ll be the first to comment on the UH stadium design article in the front page this am.
Why “aluminum bench seats?” just because they got it on the mainland does not mean we got to have it here – like, just because they jump into the fire, you going jump in too? Why the need for a very large press box? Do they bring in or contribute substantially to UH bottom line? Besides, don’t they get “free” passes to UH games?
Disappointed by Mercardo Kim’s statements bout UH “transparency” – are you telling us that on “idea” must be first addressed and approved by you and the Legislature before it becomes public knowledge?
I support the idea of UH’s own stadium and hope the powers to be will have the wisdom to insure that it will be a totally “interactive” stadium – by this I mean, used every day to garner income such as public parking and special rate parking for UH students (must show current UH ID); eating facilities open daily to UH and general public; and if built over H1, create coaches offices, lounge, locker rooms, weight room, meeting rooms, etc. on the “mauka” side and all other on the “makai” side such as visiting locker rooms, deliver vehicles, emergency and police parking, bus parking, etc. This will keep them from entering UH and creating unnecessary traffic in the Lower Campus.
Design facility so all “public use facilities” fringe the stadium and create security entrances so the public cannot enter the stadium except on game day; create several seating areas for those with physical disabilities; etc.

I like FAU’s stadium which is a combo of bleacher and regular seats. Nice Press/Luxury Boxes. Instead of depending on the State, how about funding this through fundraising, private donations, and naming rights partnerships. Might take longer, but enough with these politicians. People not interested in UH can’t complain.

Bleacher seats are like the rail. It’s for other people to use.
The DOD uses Design-Build teams on many projects. Contractors-Architects-Engineers form a team and submit a design and cost for a turn key project. It reduces time and controls cost. The state method of putting design contracts out, going through bidding phase followed by construction pits the builder against the designer during construction. The D-B model puts them on the same team and facilitates completing ASAP to make money. It is hard to discern from this mornings stadium article which model they will follow, but it may be a D-B. In that case there is hope.

You put in bench seats to get the thing built cheaper and faster. After you make some money you put in chairs with armrests and cupholders. If crowds are small and the bench seats remain, bring your pillow and blanket and lie down to watch the game like you do at home.
But above all, any new stadium has to have luxury boxes for the big corporate donors.
Same with GOM to not discriminate if they act in the same way.
I agree that was the first thing that caught my attention..bleacher seats. Does it mean we have to dig out those portable seats with the backing that some people used at the old Honolulu Stadium. How would Sumo fare at a stadium in Hawaii? A couple of halftime bouts – not sure logistically if it would work. Can do same week as marathon. Opportunity to tie sumo to football perhaps. Marathon in mid-December, football season still on, so may generate football interest in Japan. Eventually Hawaii might get some TV revenue as Japan’s football team.

Idea of a new stadium? Hallelujah!!! I say go state of the art everything with dining and shopping venues included along with box/private seating. Hopefully we can attract an NFL team to do training camp here or a preseason/season game. Off season use it for bringing in big time concerts here…

I don’t blame the state for being critical of UH at all and I would be too. It’s taking forever for the Ching field to be finished and it’s already way over budget. The baseball team was promised their new scoreboard by the time they came back from Texas and now it’s slated to be finished by the last two seriers of the season (probably not likely). The new campus center is still not finished and they were starting that when I was still in school, and that was a while ago although I’m still young. UH West oahu took forever to finish and they are still not even done with the campus they have now because many of the services on campus are not even complete since they ran out of money. And for everyone who thinks it’s going to be an on campus stadium, that is very unrealistic. There is no room for it unless they demolish the UH lab prep school. THey should start building now though if they want it to be finished by 2030.
An on campus stadium would be really great. But translating words into actions is really challenging …

It is sad to give up on a dream (campus stadium) because all one sees are obstacles. Sure, construction has been slow (I’m sure there are many factors – management, money, blame and buck passing, recession, gov’t regulation, below grade discoveries, etc.), but things didn’t rosy at the end von Appen’s last season. Fans may have been disgusted, but they did not give up. Build the dam stadium, whether it takes 2 years or 20 years.
nutmegger, I share in your optimism and really would like to see projects come to fruition as planned but the “obstacles” are not perceptions, they are real and there is a ton of evidence to point to.
If we know, see and have experienced all these problems/obstacles why does it rear it’s ugly head time and time again with no solutions?
We move on but we also need to address and solve these issues.

Bench seating? I remember the 2009 UNLV game at Sam Boyd Stadium with the Tsai-kos. Tsai-ko size and theoretical bench seat widths don’t match…I remember us all standing to cheer and when we sat down I found myself on the steps (I had the end seat). 🙂
I liked the 2011 game better when I sat next to rasu begasu– when he sat down, he pushed the entire bench the other way. 🙄
On a more serious note, bench seating is generally best for the younger and more agile. So have a good PPV deal before switching stadiums.
Man I would love to see an on campus stadium. But I would hate to see 30k-40k people in their cars trying to leave Manoa valley. Thats a sight to see.

Yes bench seating does not sound very good. It seems more like a D2/D3 school. I think it’s great they’re trying to work history and tradition in by making it to resemble the old Honolulu stadium, but I think a more modern today stadium resembles a more big time D1 program.

NSF – agree – problems need to be addressed. I think Design-Build teams submitting designs, construction costs for selection will address some of the problems. I understand legislative oversight, but obstruction is a concern.

However, before encumbering construction funds for the actual project to be built the economic viability/feasibility has to be determined. Again, this would be a planning contract that would cost the state/university money and there would be huhu about spending money on a plan that may never get built.

I guess Ben Jay is getting tired of waiting for UH to get a good (fair) deal from Aloha Stadium. It looks like things will never change, so he is looking for ways of UH controlling it’s own destiny with future revenues.
I’ve talked to him personally a number of times and he told me that while he was Asst. AD at Ohio State, he helpled to implement 16 construction projects. That is a lot for the number of years that he was there. The man knows what he is doing, he just needs the support of everyone (Community, Politicians, Big Business, Students, Faculty and Alumni).
Oregon’s stadium has bench seating. They charge extra to rent the back supports. They have a whole section that is standing room only. No seats and it extends all the way down. Interesting concept. Squeeze em in at a lower price.

I dunno about this new stadium. I assume they might od a feasibility study, but I think that cost money.

Perhaps the reason for inquiring on the cost of a new stadium is because a certain billionaire is wanted a quote?
Aluminum seats with the option of renting seatbacks is typical. Can’t bring your own seat back in any more at most places so you rent for the season. June Jones wanted a stadium like SMU’s, but no one would listen. I’d like one like Washington’s with the cantilevered roofs for Manoa Mist. 30K with expansion to 40K. Could tailgate around campus like they do at UTEP.
“Large press box” probably means anything bigger than the current dump at Aloha Stadium.
A lot of D-I programs have bleacher seats. Watched a game at UW a few years back. Bleacher seating (at least in the section I was in). No complaint at all.
Looked at U. Michigan and OSU – looks like club seats for the rich and concrete benches for the peons – but you can buy/rent seat backs.
So bench/concrete seats are in D1 schools as well.
I forgot – either OSU or Michigan has cheap admission for those who want only to stand. There is/are sections for standing only.
Might be good to incorporate it into a UH stadium- that way nobody is going to yell at you to sit down!
Standing room section is a good idea. There a lot of people that tailgate hard, come in mid quarter and leave after last call. Then again, that might be the fighting section.
The should have a sound proof section with outlets for headphones for the old guys who go to every game but hate being around other human beings who enthusiastically watch football.
Bench seats suck but any new UH stadium will have them because it’s cheaper. Also can squeeze more seats per roll using 6 year old kids okole’s as models. I swear only one of my cheeks can fit. When I buy the seat back it helps a little but only made for a tiny person.
Sheesh who knew 7th seed Cal Poly vs 5th seed Northridge for the championship. That makes it that much tougher to take that loss on thursday.

I wonder if UH sent out a questionnaire to the season ticket holders to see what their priorities were on a possible new stadium? After all these years of comfortable seating, it would seem presumptuous for UH to unilaterally decide to revert to bleacher/bench seating.
A few months ago we went to the UH VS. Navy Football game at Annapolis.
They have a on-campus Stadium that seats about 35,000 people.
It was really nice. We said at the game that UH could use something like that.

I would think that a stadium in the area of 40,000 to 45,000 would be more suitable for a program such as UH. Average attendance of about 35,000 would be something to shoot for instead of 20,000 – 25,000 with a 30,000 seat stadium.
Agree that if you don’t have a solution or better suggestion, you’re part of the problem.

108… Grew up watching Wazzu games at Martin Stadium. Bench seats w/backs. Zero complaints. If your okole needed something extra, you could bring in your own seat cushion or purchase one near concessions.
The excitement from the game made you forget about a hard metal bench…. Unless it was a November home game and sub 40 temps. Then standing was a better option.

I like the early morning workouts. I think forces guys to be mentally tougher to get going at that hour. The other plus is that it mostly eliminates questionable late evening behavior since they need to hit the sack early. Very eager to see the returnees with their 2nd S&C program under Beemer.
Stanford had the same vision when they downsized their stadium from 89,000 to 50,000 because they figured they would always suck.
Once watched a Tokyo Giants baseball game at the Tokyo Dome (vs Yokohama Bay Stars with Glenn Braggs), standing room only ticket. There was an area for those fans. Wasn’t that bad, but I wouldn’t do it again.

was not Navy’s stadium “off-campus” in the town of Annapolis? recall entering the stadium road way before the Academy and many private homes as we left the stadium – of course, it was dark then and I was in the dumps cause we lost so badly – not so much the score, but how certain DEs did not contain or maintain their area of responsibility which led to many long TD runs by Navy’s QB
upon entering the stadium, I was the “bench seats” at the “makai goal line” and thought just like the others where we had bench seats – found out later that area is reserved for the mid-shipman and we theater seats – BTW, the mid-shipman commander was a Hawaii boy – forgot his name although it was announced – sounded like Sterling

would Kamehameha consider “re-leasing” the “old Honolulu Stadium” land to UH with the condition that UH builds its own stadium from which Kamehameha gets a percentage of the concession proceeds.
deal would include purchasing the old Bowl O Drome land to create a multi-level parking lot – maybe, even build elevated on-off ramps direct to HI east and and west bound – why not? if the elevated rail system can do this why not UH? it’s the principle grasshopper!
Mr. A-House, according to the tax map, State of Hawaii owns the site of the Stadium Park. It looks like Hawaiian Homes owns the Bowl-O-Drome site.
I like the idea someone once had about Kaimuki High School. It’s close to campus and close enough to the existing off-ramp to have flyovers over Kapiolani to the freeway.
#125 Absolutely. What happens to projected attendance if Apple’s plan (below) to get UH into the PAC-XX? We know those games draw big crowds. I would rather not be a defeatist and justify downsizing a new stadium based on only 2 very disappointing seasons.

even tho the weather was rainy and windy, it was a pretty good Saturday. Went to a birthday party to honor a friend on his 70th birthday. His sisters put on the party and they went all out. I didn’t recognize one of the guys till he came up to me. Was my kid brother and I friend, Carl Eldredge. Carl is a retired Maui Police and he was with his grandson. Asked him about the Eldredge that would be a walk on for the warriors and he said this is him. He said he is looking forward to joining the warriors. Now going get more warrior fans on Molokai cause his grandma is from Molokai.
even tho weather may not be the best tomorrow, got to make an effort to get to the game and watch my friends play against each other in a sr softball game. both teams are 0-5.

Bench seating is prevalent in most major football venues….in some cases there are sections with private seating…ND, Michigan just to name a few. Been to several Hawaii away games CU, OSU, Washington CSU, Wyoming…..grabbing bench all the way!!!! There are a lot of maintence issues with individual seats the least of which is clean-up after event. All I want to do is win….I worry about my butt later—-Go Warriors!!!!
new stadium, 30,000 seats…..how about a floating field in pearl harbor like this…or put this by natitorium (sp) or somewhere maybe in waikiki if can…heck who knows 🙂

I’m wondering if the fact that design plans should have some of the old Honolulu Stadium’s history and nostalgia featured into it, if that is a hint at the desired site.
30,000 with the potential to expand to 50,000 in the future, bleacher seating with premium “seat” sections and luxury boxes, concessions, AND . . . a Hawaii athletic history museum to include the Polynesian HOF and Circle members to promote non-season visits to the stadium.
Kev-1: Great points about a new UH stadium. Key is to have the capacity for expansion up to 50K seats. Hospitality/Banquet room with a museum sounds good. Can also rent it out to private parties.
