Dawn patrol

At 5:05 this morning, strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer arrived on the Manoa campus.

Five minutes later, head coach Norm Chow showed up.

By 5:30, the majority of defensive players had gathered, wearing “Rise” T-shirts.

And by 6, when Beemer’s whistle sounded, the Rainbow Warriors were ready for Saturday’s first training session.

Guud Morning Tsaikos….make sure you use the whole can of hair spray..for those who have hair..

    Great pics…success starts here…IMUA WARRIORS!

  2. Haleakala March 15, 2014 8:34 am

What happened to the offensive players? Slept in a little longer?

  3. whitey March 15, 2014 8:34 am

    good morning tsaikos

  4. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 8:36 am

It’s the defense’s turn to start early.

  5. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 8:37 am

So, I ask one of the guys: Who’s that big guy over there?
    Answer: Jamie Tago.

  6. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 8:38 am

It’s hard to describe someone “appearing to be stronger,” but Keelan Ewaliko appears to be stronger. He appears to have a future as a hard-hitting safety.

  7. Haleakala March 15, 2014 8:42 am

I’d like to see Keelan play. The last time I saw him play was the game against Farrington when he ran the ball in for a TD on the last play of the game.

  8. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 8:42 am

Dang it…it’s like a slooooow drip….anticipation….spring ball, summer camp, fall camp….show time!

    GOOD MORNING DAWN PATROL!
    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Men of my age don’t like to hear the phrase: “Slow drip.”

  11. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 8:44 am

Looking forward to seeing Jeremy Castro on the field. He could be a real impact defensive player with his size, speed, and athletic ability. Same goes for Benny Fonua. Hope Julian Gener’s rehab is coming along. Need to get him back.

  12. Haleakala March 15, 2014 8:45 am

There’s going to be some studs behind the line on defense. On the line also of course.

  13. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 8:48 am

#10: Stephen: Yep, plumbing is always an issue with guys “our age.” Really tired of hearing all of those commercials for ED, and men’s clinics. More reminders of getting old

They apparently have medication for it. I just don’t like some of the side effects, like death. Death?

  17. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 8:55 am

Stephen: Agree. When you listen to all of the side effects from these meds, it makes you wonder.

  18. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 8:58 am

When I was a kid, i complained about having an itchy arm. I guess I brushed against poison ivy, or something. The camp counselor said: Would you rather have an itchy arm or no arm at all?
Even then I thought: Hey, Confucius, that’s stupid.
But, yes, I’d rather have a slow drip and itchy arm than the alternative.

  19. Haleakala March 15, 2014 8:59 am

There is also surgery. I finally had it a couple of months ago. The meds didn’t work well for me. I don’t have to deal with the aggravation for a few years. Yes, that thing will keep on growing and the solution may not be permanent.

    ST..adult pampers?….

  22. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:04 am

I walked behind the Ching complex this morning. I’m thinking it’s going to be close between the complex and the rail over which reaches the finish line first.

  23. Haleakala March 15, 2014 9:04 am

Wafan, the weather inWailuku reminds me of Seattle. It has been raining for several weeks. However we could use the water.

  24. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:05 am

    NSF:
    Boxers or briefs?
    Depends.

  25. Haleakala March 15, 2014 9:06 am

Talking about adult pampers, did you know that Japan sells more adult diapers than baby diapers? The population there is getting old, and they are not making enough babies.

  26. leron March 15, 2014 9:07 am

Leahey mentioned last night that the baseball scoreboard bulbs were supposed to be replaced after they came back from Texas…..and still waiting. Maybe that’ll be done after the Ching complex.

  27. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 9:08 am

I’ll put it on your Christmas wish list..but Depends on your behavior this year…be nice now..

  28. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:09 am

That must be a bummer. Your first day of life and you already have a mortgage.

what time did you rise and shine to be at UH before 5am?

Bad news – Donna Mercado Kim

  33. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:15 am

My other favorite is when you withhold money, then you get a tax refund.
The next year, you have to pay taxes on the previous year’s tax refund because it’s considered earnings. How is that earnings when the money already was taxed?

  34. nutmegger March 15, 2014 9:15 am

“Come to Fisher Hawaii, next to Gibson’s …”

  51. A-House March 15, 2014 9:33 am

OK. I’ll be the first to comment on the UH stadium design article in the front page this am.

Why “aluminum bench seats?” just because they got it on the mainland does not mean we got to have it here – like, just because they jump into the fire, you going jump in too? Why the need for a very large press box? Do they bring in or contribute substantially to UH bottom line? Besides, don’t they get “free” passes to UH games?

Disappointed by Mercardo Kim’s statements bout UH “transparency” – are you telling us that on “idea” must be first addressed and approved by you and the Legislature before it becomes public knowledge?

I support the idea of UH’s own stadium and hope the powers to be will have the wisdom to insure that it will be a totally “interactive” stadium – by this I mean, used every day to garner income such as public parking and special rate parking for UH students (must show current UH ID); eating facilities open daily to UH and general public; and if built over H1, create coaches offices, lounge, locker rooms, weight room, meeting rooms, etc. on the “mauka” side and all other on the “makai” side such as visiting locker rooms, deliver vehicles, emergency and police parking, bus parking, etc. This will keep them from entering UH and creating unnecessary traffic in the Lower Campus.

Design facility so all “public use facilities” fringe the stadium and create security entrances so the public cannot enter the stadium except on game day; create several seating areas for those with physical disabilities; etc.

Guess what, you are in my Congressional District and I will not vote for you!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:33 am

Robert Kekaula was telling me he likes Crystal Light; those packets that you pour into bottled water.
I’m thinking, we used to call that “Exchange.”
OK, everybody, gather around and sing the “Exchange” song …

  53. nutmegger March 15, 2014 9:34 am

Anyone remember the Blue Goose – Puck’s Alley?

  54. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:36 am

When people speak of “transparency,” they’re basically saying: Hey, how come everybody knows but me?

  55. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 9:37 am

Tons. In the storage. New bottle. Read dilution instructions. Dont spray if raining….washes off.

  56. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:38 am

Speaking of transparency, why is that all news outlets request 911 transcripts?
Not sure what good it does to air them, unless there’s suspicion that the police or dispatcher acted inappropriately or in an untimely manner.
But usually it’s a witness hysterical over seeing something awful. What’s the purpose of airing that?

  57. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 9:39 am

Sorry……supposed to be a text for kids. hehe

  58. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:41 am

I’m sure, one day, UH will own its own stadium.
But it won’t get parking or concessions, nor will it be allowed to hold concerts, real or imagined …

  59. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:43 am

OK, now we’re all curious about what sort of assignment 3-Prong has for his kids.

  60. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 9:44 am

I like FAU’s stadium which is a combo of bleacher and regular seats. Nice Press/Luxury Boxes. Instead of depending on the State, how about funding this through fundraising, private donations, and naming rights partnerships. Might take longer, but enough with these politicians. People not interested in UH can’t complain.

    http://islandstudio.blogspot.com/2012/06/fau-stadium-boca-raton-fl.html

  61. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 9:47 am

Bleacher seats are like the rail. It’s for other people to use.

  62. nutmegger March 15, 2014 9:48 am

The DOD uses Design-Build teams on many projects. Contractors-Architects-Engineers form a team and submit a design and cost for a turn key project. It reduces time and controls cost. The state method of putting design contracts out, going through bidding phase followed by construction pits the builder against the designer during construction. The D-B model puts them on the same team and facilitates completing ASAP to make money. It is hard to discern from this mornings stadium article which model they will follow, but it may be a D-B. In that case there is hope.

  63. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 9:49 am

Oh, my aching okole. Yeah, kinda rough. I wonder how the folks at Michigan’s Big House feel?

  64. old808 March 15, 2014 9:49 am

Good morning you’re still young ST but boy the slow drip brought out the oldies in all of us…..Toyo Theater and all the little saimin stands along the river

  65. old808 March 15, 2014 9:51 am

Used to watch the samurai movies when I was a kid. I think it was Hashizuo Okawa the main samurai actor of that time. I may have the name wrong….slow drip or forgetfulness

  66. Haleakala March 15, 2014 9:51 am

#51 A-House: I had the same thought that you did when I read the article. What entitles DMK to know what ideas are being bantered about from the beginning. I sure will not vote for any GOL’s. (Grumpy Old Ladies)

  67. el burro sabio March 15, 2014 9:53 am

You put in bench seats to get the thing built cheaper and faster. After you make some money you put in chairs with armrests and cupholders. If crowds are small and the bench seats remain, bring your pillow and blanket and lie down to watch the game like you do at home.

But above all, any new stadium has to have luxury boxes for the big corporate donors.

  68. Haleakala March 15, 2014 9:54 am

Same with GOM to not discriminate if they act in the same way.

  69. old808 March 15, 2014 9:55 am

I agree that was the first thing that caught my attention..bleacher seats. Does it mean we have to dig out those portable seats with the backing that some people used at the old Honolulu Stadium. I was young back then so never needed it but with an old butt and slow drip…shoots I wonder if Kam swap meet sells it.

  70. old808 March 15, 2014 9:57 am

DMK irritates me with her bs banter.

  71. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 9:58 am

man some people are really old…

transparency….I can see you but you no can see me…depends on who using the term

A-house…no get me started…UH like design and build a what?!?!…just like they wen try build one softball stadium and one practice football field and one sand volleyball court and….I no like tink about dis one!

  72. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 10:00 am

nutmegger, once dis get started going be hard to discern anything…because too much transparency

  73. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 10:01 am

tink, how long dey wen start building and still no pau!

  74. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2014 10:02 am

It seems that instead of being against everything UH does, maybe it’s time to ask a certain politician: OK, what’s your suggestion?
It’s easy to be against something or to say it’s not transparent.
But I’m sure, if pressed, the politician has no creative ideas, either. If she did, the state would be in better condition.

  75. nutmegger March 15, 2014 10:02 am

How would Sumo fare at a stadium in Hawaii? A couple of halftime bouts – not sure logistically if it would work. Can do same week as marathon. Opportunity to tie sumo to football perhaps. Marathon in mid-December, football season still on, so may generate football interest in Japan. Eventually Hawaii might get some TV revenue as Japan’s football team.

    Just random thoughts…

  76. Luki March 15, 2014 10:04 am

Idea of a new stadium? Hallelujah!!! I say go state of the art everything with dining and shopping venues included along with box/private seating. Hopefully we can attract an NFL team to do training camp here or a preseason/season game. Off season use it for bringing in big time concerts here…

  77. boya_jr March 15, 2014 10:16 am

I like the sumo idea. How about a royal rumble sumo with a bigger ring?

  78. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 10:25 am

ST…I hear you but had many discussions with politicians and you right , they no get any more ideas than you but you don’t really want to ask them about their ideas it’s really scary sometimes…

politics..the art of compromise…seen tings get compromise into demise..

iirc…we had sumo at the NBC or was it the HIC back then..

  83. Andrew March 15, 2014 10:53 am

I don’t blame the state for being critical of UH at all and I would be too. It’s taking forever for the Ching field to be finished and it’s already way over budget. The baseball team was promised their new scoreboard by the time they came back from Texas and now it’s slated to be finished by the last two seriers of the season (probably not likely). The new campus center is still not finished and they were starting that when I was still in school, and that was a while ago although I’m still young. UH West oahu took forever to finish and they are still not even done with the campus they have now because many of the services on campus are not even complete since they ran out of money. And for everyone who thinks it’s going to be an on campus stadium, that is very unrealistic. There is no room for it unless they demolish the UH lab prep school. THey should start building now though if they want it to be finished by 2030.

  84. oneseason March 15, 2014 10:59 am

  86. nutmegger March 15, 2014 11:13 am

It is sad to give up on a dream (campus stadium) because all one sees are obstacles. Sure, construction has been slow (I’m sure there are many factors – management, money, blame and buck passing, recession, gov’t regulation, below grade discoveries, etc.), but things didn’t rosy at the end von Appen’s last season. Fans may have been disgusted, but they did not give up. Build the dam stadium, whether it takes 2 years or 20 years.

  87. NorthShoreFan March 15, 2014 11:31 am

nutmegger, I share in your optimism and really would like to see projects come to fruition as planned but the “obstacles” are not perceptions, they are real and there is a ton of evidence to point to.
If we know, see and have experienced all these problems/obstacles why does it rear it’s ugly head time and time again with no solutions?
We move on but we also need to address and solve these issues.

anyhoo, time to help my neighbor celebrate his sons b-day…Happy Birthday Kona!

  88. ALLAN YOUNG March 15, 2014 11:37 am

A 30,000-SEAT STADIUM FEATURING PREFERRED GUESTS IN LUXURY BOXES OVERLOOKING THE UNDERPRIVILEGED SQUEEZING TOGEDDA ON BENCH SEATS WITH NO ARM-RESTS WILL DRIVE THE U.H. PROGRAM BACK TO THE EARLY SIXTIES; SCHEDULING WILL DROP TO DIV. II, AND ATTENDANCE WILL ALSO DROP LIKE A ROCK, BCOZ OF RISING PRICES TO MAKE UP FOR 20,000 LESS SEATS, AND UNCOMFORTABLE SEATING, WHICH WILL ENTICE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE 60-70+YEARS OLD (I WILL GIVE UP MY 15 SEATS ON THE 40-45 YD LINE AFTER 50 YEARS) TO WATCH THE GAMES ON TV AT HOME.

ATTENDANCE WILL AVERAGE THE SAME AS NOW, MEBBE LESS, SO THERE’S THE “COST VS. SAVINGS = PROFIT” RESULT>LOSE MONEY. U.H. RETAINS ITS IMAGE AS THE FINANCIAL LAFFING STOCK OF THE SPORTS WORLD.

  89. SteveM March 15, 2014 11:37 am

    Good morning everyone!

Bench seating? I remember the 2009 UNLV game at Sam Boyd Stadium with the Tsai-kos. Tsai-ko size and theoretical bench seat widths don’t match…I remember us all standing to cheer and when we sat down I found myself on the steps (I had the end seat). 🙂

I liked the 2011 game better when I sat next to rasu begasu– when he sat down, he pushed the entire bench the other way. 🙄

On a more serious note, bench seating is generally best for the younger and more agile. So have a good PPV deal before switching stadiums.

  90. Hilo-Warrior March 15, 2014 11:40 am

Man I would love to see an on campus stadium. But I would hate to see 30k-40k people in their cars trying to leave Manoa valley. Thats a sight to see.

I thought the world was getting to be smaller through trade and technology. But after one week of searching by 14 countries, they still can’t find the missing Malaysia Airlines Boing 777. How do you figgah?

  93. oneseason March 15, 2014 11:51 am

So planners think that stadium goers want a new facility that downgrades to bleacher seating for many and upgrades to luxury box seating for a few?

  94. Andrew March 15, 2014 11:53 am

    89.

Yes bench seating does not sound very good. It seems more like a D2/D3 school. I think it’s great they’re trying to work history and tradition in by making it to resemble the old Honolulu stadium, but I think a more modern today stadium resembles a more big time D1 program.

  95. ALLAN YOUNG March 15, 2014 11:54 am

ADDED BENEFIT FOR WATCHING TV FG AT HOME: YOU CAN FART LOUDLY.

  96. nutmegger March 15, 2014 11:55 am

NSF – agree – problems need to be addressed. I think Design-Build teams submitting designs, construction costs for selection will address some of the problems. I understand legislative oversight, but obstruction is a concern.

Allan Young has many good points.
However, before encumbering construction funds for the actual project to be built the economic viability/feasibility has to be determined. Again, this would be a planning contract that would cost the state/university money and there would be huhu about spending money on a plan that may never get built.

    Hilo-Warrior
Likewise an EA or EIS would be required and a traffic study would be part. Sorry, but does the new rail actually go to UH? If so it would help with the viability of an on campus stadium.

  97. oneseason March 15, 2014 11:57 am

I love the term “mix” … reminds me of rabbit horse stew … made with one rabbit and one horse

“One-level seating deck with mix of premium club seating and aluminum bench seating”

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/newspremium/20140315__UH_athletics_looks_into_constructing_own_stadium.html?id=250439361

  98. Kapahulu March 15, 2014 12:06 pm

I guess Ben Jay is getting tired of waiting for UH to get a good (fair) deal from Aloha Stadium. It looks like things will never change, so he is looking for ways of UH controlling it’s own destiny with future revenues.
I’ve talked to him personally a number of times and he told me that while he was Asst. AD at Ohio State, he helpled to implement 16 construction projects. That is a lot for the number of years that he was there. The man knows what he is doing, he just needs the support of everyone (Community, Politicians, Big Business, Students, Faculty and Alumni).

  99. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 12:10 pm

Oregon’s stadium has bench seating. They charge extra to rent the back supports. They have a whole section that is standing room only. No seats and it extends all the way down. Interesting concept. Squeeze em in at a lower price.

  100. 99club March 15, 2014 12:17 pm

    Good morning Tsaikos.

Watching player introductions for the AAC Championship game as they play music from Alan Parson’s Project. Wonder how much they have to pay in royalties? Rich?

#93- I’m waiting for some reporter to ask: “Are those ‘pings’ from the engines unique codes for specific engines on specific planes or are the signatures the same for all Rolls Royce engines on all planes?” Two days of TV watching and no one has asked.

  101. Andrew March 15, 2014 12:19 pm

I don’t remember who said it earlier, but I agree that someone is gonna cave in and UH is going to get a better deal with the stadium. Aloha stadium is not going to survive without UH.

  102. obachan March 15, 2014 12:38 pm

    #52 okay! everybody sing along:
The Exchange goes round round round
    and down down down
    in your glass glass glass
    makes your mind
    think yum yum yum
    It’s that orangeade called Exchange

  103. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 12:39 pm

102 Andrew: I posted that earlier today but I think ST might have accidentally deleted it. Can’t see where money for new stadium will come from. We are so behind in deferred maintenance on existing facilities.

  104. Shoko March 15, 2014 12:39 pm

I dunno about this new stadium. I assume they might od a feasibility study, but I think that cost money.

ACARS pinging is basically knocking on the door of a satellite but not getting an answer. The satellite hears you but isn’t answering because he’s not buying what you’re selling.

  105. Shoko March 15, 2014 12:40 pm

Perhaps the reason for inquiring on the cost of a new stadium is because a certain billionaire is wanted a quote?

  106. Hodada March 15, 2014 12:45 pm

Aluminum seats with the option of renting seatbacks is typical. Can’t bring your own seat back in any more at most places so you rent for the season. June Jones wanted a stadium like SMU’s, but no one would listen. I’d like one like Washington’s with the cantilevered roofs for Manoa Mist. 30K with expansion to 40K. Could tailgate around campus like they do at UTEP.

“Large press box” probably means anything bigger than the current dump at Aloha Stadium.

  107. kev-1 March 15, 2014 12:48 pm

A lot of D-I programs have bleacher seats. Watched a game at UW a few years back. Bleacher seating (at least in the section I was in). No complaint at all.

  108. tommui March 15, 2014 12:51 pm

Looked at U. Michigan and OSU – looks like club seats for the rich and concrete benches for the peons – but you can buy/rent seat backs.

So bench/concrete seats are in D1 schools as well.

  109. tommui March 15, 2014 12:53 pm

I forgot – either OSU or Michigan has cheap admission for those who want only to stand. There is/are sections for standing only.

Might be good to incorporate it into a UH stadium- that way nobody is going to yell at you to sit down!

  110. kev-1 March 15, 2014 12:55 pm

Standing room section is a good idea. There a lot of people that tailgate hard, come in mid quarter and leave after last call. Then again, that might be the fighting section.

  111. kev-1 March 15, 2014 12:56 pm

The should have a sound proof section with outlets for headphones for the old guys who go to every game but hate being around other human beings who enthusiastically watch football.

  112. Warrior Dave March 15, 2014 1:19 pm

Bench seats suck but any new UH stadium will have them because it’s cheaper. Also can squeeze more seats per roll using 6 year old kids okole’s as models. I swear only one of my cheeks can fit. When I buy the seat back it helps a little but only made for a tiny person.

  113. Andrew March 15, 2014 1:34 pm

Sheesh who knew 7th seed Cal Poly vs 5th seed Northridge for the championship. That makes it that much tougher to take that loss on thursday.

  114. Boya_jr March 15, 2014 1:41 pm

I’m going green at a bar at Powell and Green in SF wearing UH gear. Come find me (San Fran).

  115. nutmegger March 15, 2014 1:58 pm

Link to bench seating with built-in backrest.
    can or no can?

  116. SteveM March 15, 2014 2:05 pm

    RE: my #90

Meant to say, “…sat next to rasu begasu– when our ex-sumotori sat down again, he pushed the entire bench the other way.”

We had decided to buy 3 tickets for the 2013 UH-UNLV game if we sat together again. Alas….

    RIP rasu begasu.
BTW, Kumi brought his ashes from Las Vegas and they are in the Honpa Hongwanji Mission.

  117. oneseason March 15, 2014 2:16 pm

I wonder if UH sent out a questionnaire to the season ticket holders to see what their priorities were on a possible new stadium? After all these years of comfortable seating, it would seem presumptuous for UH to unilaterally decide to revert to bleacher/bench seating.

  118. Kapahulu March 15, 2014 2:19 pm

A few months ago we went to the UH VS. Navy Football game at Annapolis.
They have a on-campus Stadium that seats about 35,000 people.
It was really nice. We said at the game that UH could use something like that.

  120. Former UH Athlete March 15, 2014 4:14 pm

    34… How about Daiei?

  121. Former UH Athlete March 15, 2014 4:16 pm

112… Season tickets for that section include free set of “TV Ears.”

  122. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 4:18 pm

I would think that a stadium in the area of 40,000 to 45,000 would be more suitable for a program such as UH. Average attendance of about 35,000 would be something to shoot for instead of 20,000 – 25,000 with a 30,000 seat stadium.

Agree that if you don’t have a solution or better suggestion, you’re part of the problem.

108… Grew up watching Wazzu games at Martin Stadium. Bench seats w/backs. Zero complaints. If your okole needed something extra, you could bring in your own seat cushion or purchase one near concessions.

The excitement from the game made you forget about a hard metal bench…. Unless it was a November home game and sub 40 temps. Then standing was a better option.

I like the early morning workouts. I think forces guys to be mentally tougher to get going at that hour. The other plus is that it mostly eliminates questionable late evening behavior since they need to hit the sack early. Very eager to see the returnees with their 2nd S&C program under Beemer.

  124. Old Diver March 15, 2014 4:29 pm

Stanford had the same vision when they downsized their stadium from 89,000 to 50,000 because they figured they would always suck.

  125. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 4:31 pm

Once watched a Tokyo Giants baseball game at the Tokyo Dome (vs Yokohama Bay Stars with Glenn Braggs), standing room only ticket. There was an area for those fans. Wasn’t that bad, but I wouldn’t do it again.

  126. A-House March 15, 2014 4:46 pm

    kapahulu:

we were at the Annapolis game too with Panda Travel and stayed at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel just across the White House – did you go “alone” or hook up with a travel agency?

was not Navy’s stadium “off-campus” in the town of Annapolis? recall entering the stadium road way before the Academy and many private homes as we left the stadium – of course, it was dark then and I was in the dumps cause we lost so badly – not so much the score, but how certain DEs did not contain or maintain their area of responsibility which led to many long TD runs by Navy’s QB

upon entering the stadium, I was the “bench seats” at the “makai goal line” and thought just like the others where we had bench seats – found out later that area is reserved for the mid-shipman and we theater seats – BTW, the mid-shipman commander was a Hawaii boy – forgot his name although it was announced – sounded like Sterling

sorry gang, but there is still the connection to the military even tho I retired in 1992. Just traversing our winding road into our valley – I know it’s repaved, but when I come to certain sections where they were many pot holes, I still cringe and expect to hit them – the fallacy or weakness of the human mind.

  127. A-House March 15, 2014 4:52 pm

would Kamehameha consider “re-leasing” the “old Honolulu Stadium” land to UH with the condition that UH builds its own stadium from which Kamehameha gets a percentage of the concession proceeds.

deal would include purchasing the old Bowl O Drome land to create a multi-level parking lot – maybe, even build elevated on-off ramps direct to HI east and and west bound – why not? if the elevated rail system can do this why not UH? it’s the principle grasshopper!

  128. el burro sabio March 15, 2014 5:27 pm

Mr. A-House, according to the tax map, State of Hawaii owns the site of the Stadium Park. It looks like Hawaiian Homes owns the Bowl-O-Drome site.

  129. el burro sabio March 15, 2014 5:29 pm

I like the idea someone once had about Kaimuki High School. It’s close to campus and close enough to the existing off-ramp to have flyovers over Kapiolani to the freeway.

  130. oneseason March 15, 2014 5:32 pm

#125 Absolutely. What happens to projected attendance if Apple’s plan (below) to get UH into the PAC-XX? We know those games draw big crowds. I would rather not be a defeatist and justify downsizing a new stadium based on only 2 very disappointing seasons.

the first was the ala wai gc.
    then, in no particular order.
varsity theatre and moililili field(parking lot).
kaimuki hs (under consideration for closure)
stadium park plus bowl-o-drome and moiilili field(p lot)

Thanks Al. As a semi-retired golfer, I object to using Ala Wai, but it does have the most open area to use 🙂

  138. whitey March 15, 2014 11:06 pm

even tho the weather was rainy and windy, it was a pretty good Saturday. Went to a birthday party to honor a friend on his 70th birthday. His sisters put on the party and they went all out. I didn’t recognize one of the guys till he came up to me. Was my kid brother and I friend, Carl Eldredge. Carl is a retired Maui Police and he was with his grandson. Asked him about the Eldredge that would be a walk on for the warriors and he said this is him. He said he is looking forward to joining the warriors. Now going get more warrior fans on Molokai cause his grandma is from Molokai.

  139. whitey March 15, 2014 11:09 pm

even tho weather may not be the best tomorrow, got to make an effort to get to the game and watch my friends play against each other in a sr softball game. both teams are 0-5.

  140. el burro sabio March 16, 2014 12:00 am

Senor Al, no, not athletic dorms. Keep them near campus so it’s easier to go to classes.

Bench seating is prevalent in most major football venues….in some cases there are sections with private seating…ND, Michigan just to name a few. Been to several Hawaii away games CU, OSU, Washington CSU, Wyoming…..grabbing bench all the way!!!! There are a lot of maintence issues with individual seats the least of which is clean-up after event. All I want to do is win….I worry about my butt later—-Go Warriors!!!!

  144. Moocher March 16, 2014 3:00 am

new stadium, 30,000 seats…..how about a floating field in pearl harbor like this…or put this by natitorium (sp) or somewhere maybe in waikiki if can…heck who knows 🙂

  146. kev-1 March 16, 2014 8:11 am

    al,

I’m wondering if the fact that design plans should have some of the old Honolulu Stadium’s history and nostalgia featured into it, if that is a hint at the desired site.

  147. kev-1 March 16, 2014 8:14 am

30,000 with the potential to expand to 50,000 in the future, bleacher seating with premium “seat” sections and luxury boxes, concessions, AND . . . a Hawaii athletic history museum to include the Polynesian HOF and Circle members to promote non-season visits to the stadium.

  148. Old School Dave March 16, 2014 8:57 am

Kev-1: Great points about a new UH stadium. Key is to have the capacity for expansion up to 50K seats. Hospitality/Banquet room with a museum sounds good. Can also rent it out to private parties.
