Yep. The service errors were really a downer. I thought Wisconsin was going to take the 2nd set, for sure. Obviously, I am rooting for the underdog.
Wisconsin 23-18. Maybe it will happen in the 4th set!

Penn State wins 25-23. Another unfortunate service error by Wisconsin and the wicked serving of Hancock did the job for the Nittany Lions. Ugh. The empire continues.
Very impressed by Wisconsin’s heart and the leadership and play of Carlini.

And thats a wrap! Wisconsin held on tough!……BTW after seeing Keri Walsh and Misty May popping up this year at a game….Does anyone know what Logan Tom is up to? She’s the reason I started following other teams other than Hawaii. Logan is in a league all her own (I couldn’t stay upset at her for knocking Hawaii out of a game).

The sad thing about Penn State winning so many titles (and I for one am tired of it), they still don’t have a lot of fan support base on attendance. Hawaii fans would soooooo appreciate a title.
Carlini’s defense and blocking for a setter is really good, I’m excited about her on the national team. One of my favorite non wahine players for sure.

To: 808BV: I, too, would be interested in finding out the whereabouts of Logan Tom and what she is currently doing. Her dad, Mel Tom, was a very close friend of mine in high school and we used to go over their house all the time while Mel’s dad would cook for us. Mel was a great basketball player and even though he never played football in h.s., having attended Maryknoll, he played at San Jose St. and eventually got drafted and played on the first team as a defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles. Mel retired to the Big Isle and bought a bar and Logan would come and visit and stay with him periodically. When Mel passed away at so young an age over a decade ago, that was the last time I saw Logan although I know she was on the national team and was a tremendous force as a player at Stanford, also. More than a tremendous AA Volleyball player, one of the best at Stanford and in college, she was such a beautiful person in character, personality and grew to be such a lovely person.
Would really appreciate if anyone knows what she is currently doing. Thanks.
Wonder if Russ Rose would agree to send next year’s team to Hawai’i in a non-conference matchup? (Think the Nike Volleyball Big Four Classic has stopped, at least in its present format.) Shoji has never beaten Rose, and I’m sure Shoji would like one final crack in this Clash of the Titans.

One more major statistic to post before we can call it a wrap: Monday’s FINAL NCAA RPI FOR 2013. Anyone would like to venture a guess as to where Hawai’i will end up? It was #17 on Dec 2 — the last regular-season RPI.
Logan played for a club team in Brazil called the Rio de Raneiro Volei clube from 2012-2013 now she is working with a instructional volleyball website called volleyball 1 on1
16. Vansant sure got a lot of hardware this weekend despite being a non factor in her match. She was awful, Emily is better.
A match does not make a season, Hartong has had bad matches as well.
sure you had a 6’5″ hitter on Wisconsin’s side, but with Slay at 6′ 6″ Penn St. has weapons at every position. Even the setter can hit on 2 and pound it hard. UH had a lefty setter in Joanna Samm who hailed from Florida. She lasted one season at least playing wise and was gone. She too hit on 2 but it was not what Dave wanted from his setter. Not sure how the game is fair, well, okay its not. At that height, i’m surprised Slay can even be blocked, but she does get blocked. Her best hits come with her ability to turn and angle her hits any direction in mid air. She doesn’t even have to jump much. Not sure what UH’s middle can do about doing that.
Carlini is a poised setter already, but she studies film after every single match, plus she is 6’2″. Comparing her to say Uiato, objectively, no comparison. Even the middle – Thompson, for Wisconsin was effective with her slide, mostly due to the passing and the setting which gave her seam almost every time. I love the defense from Wisconsin.
22, thank you for that information on Samm, I’ve inquired a few times asking if Dave ever had a lefty Opp or player in general. The only one I could think of was Tehani. It’s very interesting to know that Samm liked to attack on two & I believe that it is not something Dave likes of his setters. He likes modest setters that runs the offense and doesn’t take it into their own hands to score points.
I remember either him or the announcers saying that he would prefer the setter to set our All-Americans versus dumping the ball. We’ve never had a setter who would swing on two like Hancock. I’m looking forward to that type of change in personnel/philosophy the day Shoji retires. However, until then…I’ll settle for nostalgia.
I always think of what the day Shoji retires is going to be like. I imagine shock waves through media, social media, talk on the street. Part of the state of Hawaii’s heart & soul will just die with his retirement. He is an icon that will live on forever.
I don’t want to see Shoji retire anytime soon, but when he does, the interesting question is “Who will take over the program?”

hossana … Wow. Thanks for that little insight. I knew Logan had Hawaii ties, never knew how. Do you remember the name of the bar or if it’s still running? I live on big island so if its still going maybe i’d stop in one day.

The big question is could UH attract a top volleyball coach when Dave Shoji retires. I was thinking of maybe use part of that money when we used to pay MacMakin over a million dollar and pay our volleyball coach top money. It would be nice if we can pull Jerritt Elliot from Texas, after all he used to play for Hawaii. Just a thought.
Shoji is well paid, one of the top in the country.

I forgot the name of the bar but people in Upper Kona would know and wouldn’t be surprised if the name of the bar has changed but, if I remember correctly, its located above Kona on the highway.
Mel Tom aka Melvyn Tom lived in Hononlu on Winam St. off of Mooheau st. in Kapahulu with his mom, dad, and sisters. He had a large family and the dad was the cook in the house and his close friend was Charley Melim who now lives in Vegas. Mel played basketball for Maryknoll and was an All-Star then went to school in S.F. before San Jose St. offered him a scholarship to play for them. He was so good that he was drafted by the Phil. Eagles where he really earned a reputation as a hard hitter…he played for them for many years before being traded to Chicago Bears, I think, then retired and came home and then settled on the Big Isle. He and his beautiful wife separated and had couple kids, one of which was Logan who would come home practically every summer while Mel was living on the Big Isle. She was very close to her dad and it would have been just great if she had played for UH but went to Stanford instead and history was made.
Have written this a number of times but one thing Logan told me, think it was around the 99 ncaa final four here was that she loved Hawaii but refused to take a recruiting trip here because she knew if she did, she’d sign with UH. She wanted to play for Stanford.
Wow, she would have made a tremendous difference to our program if she had played for the Wahine….irregardless, she was and probably still is a beautiful person who was close to her dad and who was also so proud, so verrrry proud of his daughter. I remember the bartender in Mel’s bar telling me that whenever she came to the bar, people used to just love her humbleness as she never talked about her exploits only about Hawaiiana as she wanted to learn so much about the culture etc….it must have hurt her that her dad died when he did but he was diagnosed with that ailment several yrs. before his passing so he knew as much as Logan and her brother and former wife as well as his family and friends knew that he had a limited amount of time left. Memories……
Having Willoughby, Kahumoku, and Logan Tom on the OH together for 2 seasons would have been interesting to see, but that’s neither here nor there. Anyway, interesting to hear about that comment from Tom.
Last night on one of the ESPN channels I saw part of a game called the all American High school Game, or something like that, and could only watch about one and a half sets. The game had four Penn. State recruits starting between the opening twelve, with one more a sub. Penn. looks stocked for at least one or two more titles In the near future. Great players that will only add to the dominance of this Team. My heart will only hope that Coach Shoji will continue to coach the Wahine Team so we will still be able to compete with Teams such as that. When Coach Dave leaves the naysayers will finally get to see that recruiting to Hawai’i is not that easy. Too many of these young girls do NOT want to be that far away from home and their support system. The girls that come to Hawai’i, have to have a sense of adventure too many young people don’t have, which coach is able to mold into the fine young ladies that come out of his program. When he leaves, I hope that UH will maintain the fine reputation he has given us and continue to rise in the National view, but with the pathetic state of the resources at UH I for one doubt it. As always, I say ” GO BOWS “.
