Sunday musings

Here are some random thoughts on a rainy Sunday:

> UH’s men’s volleyball team is 4-2 against UCLA since John Speraw succeeded Al Scates as the Bruins’ head coach. During that span, the Rainbow Warriors are 3-0 in five-set matches.

> Opposite attacker Brook Sedore and middle blocker Taylor Averill are deserving of All-America honors. Averill is a rare middle who also can set and play back-row defense. He made a nice pancake dig last night.

> UH had to open the upper level last night because the lower bowl was presumably sold out. So how come the announced turnstile count was only 2,715? It sure looked like there were more in the house. (Which again goes to the theory that maybe the SSC really only has 8,500 seats instead of 10,000-plus.)

ssc

> USC quarterback Max Wittek concludes his UH recruiting trip today. It rained most of the weekend, but this was more of a business trip. Wittek already is familiar with Aloha Stadium after playing against the Warriors in the 2013 opener.

> Everybody seems to be raving about defensive end Tui Unga’s work ethic and workouts. Unga will be  participating in spring drills.

> This week, UH will finalize which players from the walk-on tryout will be invited to spring training. The finalists had to undergo academic and medical assessments. Walk-ons must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.

I love Arlington. Smack dab in the middle between Dallas and Fort Worth. And, of course, home to a gorgeous baseball stadium and great rib joints.
Arlington, Va., also is pretty cool.

  9. whitey March 2, 2014 10:03 am

    good morning tsaikos

  10. Haleakala March 2, 2014 10:03 am

It sounds like if all players take Tui Unga’s example and work as hard, the Warriors will be in great shape and primed for the season.

  11. whitey March 2, 2014 10:04 am

porgot, congratulations to all rainbow sports for another week of memories.

  12. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 10:04 am

I guess Arlington, Texas, was named after Arlington, Va..

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid March 2, 2014 10:05 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

    Top Twenny!

  14. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 10:06 am

Hey, Mr. DPK, where were you last night?

  15. Kevin March 2, 2014 10:09 am

Kudos to Asics on the sharp looking uniforms for the men’s volleyball team!

Even better.. primary colors have been either WHITE or GREEN.

But wait! They won two big matches back to back and they weren’t wearing all black? What the heck? I thought the black makes teams more intimidating and helps them win? No… that’s can’t be! Could it be that its truly only up to the coaches and the student-athletes to help ensure victory and the true essence of the team? COULD IT???

    No can’t be! Could it???

    (Now THAT’S sarcasm!)

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid March 2, 2014 10:12 am

Stay warm, midnight! Give the wife a snuggle from everybody here.

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid March 2, 2014 10:16 am

I was watching State High School Wrestling Championships, Mr. Stephen.

Watched the last set of the Warriors two game sweep of “Dah Bearsssss” on the telly.

  18. Da Punchbowl Kid March 2, 2014 10:19 am

Kevin – those new unis look even better in person.

  19. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 10:21 am

Those are really nice uniforms. They took a while to arrive, but they’re nice.

  20. NorthShoreFan March 2, 2014 10:22 am

Midnight, got family in Weatherford…dat cold over there too?….dang it, might have to send some Hawaiian Sunshine over to them…

  21. whitey March 2, 2014 10:30 am

Weatherford Tx where the bb bows had got one of the best big men a while back. porgot his first name, but think his last name was Barker.

  22. bowwar March 2, 2014 10:34 am

#21: Tommy Barker…Briefly played for the Celtics if I recall…

  23. bowwar March 2, 2014 10:36 am

Didn’t Colt attend Mater Dei?? Maybe, he should talk to Wittek about how coming to Hawaii revived his college career.

  24. NorthShoreFan March 2, 2014 10:38 am

    yup, and some others.

  25. whitey March 2, 2014 10:39 am

bowwar, thanks. he played at a time when UH had some outstanding JC players.

  26. Former UH Athlete March 2, 2014 10:40 am

How the heck was turnstile at 2700? That looks closer to 4000-4500 from the pic. Maybe UH is doing some Chinese style accounting to hide some revenue.

  27. A-House March 2, 2014 10:52 am

based on Panda’s game schedule – Rice and San Diego here we come!!!!!!!!!!

if can, maybe make the Colorado game so I can drive down to the AF Academy – that would complete my “academy visit” bucket list.

but, only if get the “kala” – ok Mrs A-House watch your “extra expenses”

  28. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 10:58 am

By the way, one of the players’ mom took the picture.

  29. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 11:00 am

UH’s connections are Steve Clarkson and Keyshawn Johnson. I’m not sure how much high school affiliations help. If they did, I’d be going to Bruno Mars concert.

  30. tommui March 2, 2014 11:05 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Great going Rainbow Warriors VB!

STRETCH looked good on TV – the aftermath of the game – photograph and autograph session. Learned that my granddaughter is good buddies with his niece Joy.

  31. A-joe March 2, 2014 11:12 am

tommui- only in Hawaii could connections like that ever happen on a meaningful level.

  32. tommui March 2, 2014 11:24 am

A-joe: Small world! Hope all is well with you!

  33. maddog50 March 2, 2014 11:26 am

Saw numerous references to weather from fellow bloggers….was at Soldier Field last night in Chicago with 62K crazy people watching the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins…..what an experience near blizzard conditions temp during game 12…..winchchill zero….spent 5hrs in that place….what some people will do for a sports experience!!!!

  34. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 11:38 am

    Arlington, Texas, or Arlington, Virginia?

  35. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 11:39 am

    Brooke Burke or Brook Sedore?

  36. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2014 11:39 am

PROBLY FREEBIES ARE STILL BEING PASSED AT THE MIDDLE MGMT LEVEL; SOME ARE THEN BEING “RE- SOLD” FOR 5 BUCKS ADJACENT TO THE TICKET WINDOWS. MY DTR BOT ONE FROM A GUY LAST THURS NITE; MIGHT POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN A COMP TKT. WHEN HE OFFERED IT TO ME FIRST, I NOTICED THAT HE HELD IT FACE-DOWN.

THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER TIMES WHEN A CUPLA MY FAMILY MEMBERS COULDN’T GO, AND I TRIED TO SELL MY TKTS AT FACE VALUE, I WOULD BE UNDER-CUT BY 2-4 GUYS SELLING THEIRS AT HALF-PRICE; ONE GUY HAD A FISTFUL OF TKTS. I DON’T THINK ANY OF THOSE GUYS ACTUALLY PAID FOR THEIR TKTS AS I DID.

  38. ALLAN YOUNG March 2, 2014 12:09 pm

37 CONT’D: MY WILD GUESS IS THAT SOME CONCOCTED THIS MARKETING SCHEME TO GET “GUYS ONDA STREET”, WHO NORMALLY WUDENT EVEN THINK ABT GOING TO A U.H. GAME, TO COME TO A GAME. THE PLAN WAS TO HAVE BEEN GIVING PERSONS ON THE FRINGES OF THE SPORTS PROGRAM THE TKTS TO SELL IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS WHERE THEY FREQUENT DURING OTHER TIMES OF THEIR DAY B4 GAME DAY.

HUMAN NATURE = SELL TKTS CLOSER TO GAME SITE ON GAME DAY MO’ EASY. WACHOOTINK?

  39. obachan March 2, 2014 12:09 pm

    #27: Mr A House Sir !

AWESOME news on San Diego as I will see you there. Just got off the phone with Dr. Don Weir and he will be throwing a reception for all letterwinners and fans at “Little Italy In San Diego”.

Morning brunch from 9am until 12pm with Italian breakfast & lunch for all in attendance. Great pastries with morning and afternoon beverages. All alcohol consumption is available but will have to buy out of pocket. Wine is OUTSTANDING with many to choose from. Wonderful day in San Diego with many former Rainbow Warriors in attendance. Trolley available to tour downtown San Diego and transport too and from football stadium. Aztec Nation won’t be the same again with Rainbow Warrior Nation In The House !

  43. kapakahi March 2, 2014 1:02 pm

Probably a good guess that……Wittek had no problem cheering against UCLA at last night’s MVB game.

  44. Former UH Athlete March 2, 2014 1:05 pm

33… Saw the highlights of that game… Ridiculous conditions for the players.

Did they have to get a snow blower out before the zambonie at intermissions?

  45. jm2375 March 2, 2014 1:42 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Still trying to recover from last night’s epic battle.
Had fun talking to some of the players after the game.

Only 4 more home games this season. Come on out and support the team!

#31 & 32 – which is why one should *never* burn bridges.

  49. al March 2, 2014 1:54 pm

its nice to see the former warriors at the mvb games and on the bench.

  50. al March 2, 2014 1:55 pm

was the qb at the game?

  51. al March 2, 2014 1:55 pm

    charlie wade or billy ocean?

  52. jm2375 March 2, 2014 2:05 pm

Never been to Arlington, TX, but Arlington, VA is just another suburban county. It just happens to be where a National Cemetery is located.

  53. jm2375 March 2, 2014 2:09 pm

Twin 1, Taylor Averill or Twin 2, Jace Olson?

  54. kev-1 March 2, 2014 2:25 pm

ST . . . will you be wowing us with a report on Wittek’s visit on Monday? Haven’t really heard anything other than the fact that he is here. I would imagine the SA doesn’t want to be out-done by the media source in Texas that provided the story about how well the Texas visit went. We’ll hear something, right?

  55. bowwar March 2, 2014 2:40 pm

#25: that’s one thing Coach Wallace did well was recruit good JC players.

  56. 3-Prong March 2, 2014 2:40 pm

Betcha a bunch at the volleyball game used the free ticket that came with football season tickets.

  57. Kevin March 2, 2014 2:49 pm

Rain or shine, the big cities prove why they have the intangibles to support professional sports franchises and in the case of NFL and NHL games, even blizzard-like conditions can’t stop them.

Meanwhile in Hawaii, rainclouds and “traffic” keep people away even if the teams are winning.

And apparently so does not knowing where the parking is for an even more select few.

  58. SteveM March 2, 2014 3:00 pm

Bon Voyage to Papajoe2 who has been mysteriously absent from the blog the last few days. 🙂

He is now on the 951′ long – 85,000 GT Holland Oosterdam on a bucket list cruise through the South Pacific and Oceania. <>

  59. A-House March 2, 2014 3:00 pm

    Arlington,VA:

spent 2 weeks there at the Inspector General’s school back in 1985 – very large Korean community and lots of Southeast Asians too!

It was unusual to see so many Colonels and CAPTAINS (Navy type) waiting to catch the bus or rail to work in D.C. Guess many were on TDY as we stayed at the same townhouse complex.

  60. Warrior Dave March 2, 2014 3:44 pm

Awesome performances by our Men’s VB team this weekend. They played like try Warriors and I am especially happy for Coach Wade. Great turnaround this year and hope its a sign if things to come. Would love for the boys to bring back huge crowds like the Yuval Katz days. Maybe the Bowzos will make an appearance again????

  61. Warrior Dave March 2, 2014 3:47 pm

Even if the freebie tickets were used in mass last night and maybe didn’t count against the attendance figures, I believe it will expand the teams fan base going forward. Rock on boys!!!

  62. kev-1 March 2, 2014 3:52 pm

Kevin #57 . . . I get what you’re saying, but volleyball just isn’t the draw that it once was. I’m not sure it is much of a draw in any city (not that I can back that up, just guessing).

  63. Warrior Dave March 2, 2014 3:52 pm

I’m hoping that Wittek makes a decision sooner verses later. It would give the remaining programs a chance to move on to plan B if he’s not coming. I wouldn’t be surprised if interested programs including UH is putting Wittek on a time clock.

  64. kev-1 March 2, 2014 3:53 pm

When the basketball team does well, people go. When the football team does well, people will go.

  65. kev-1 March 2, 2014 4:00 pm

I think programs need to think of Wittek as a plan B. Just for the simple fact that you don’t know.

  66. st. anthony trojan March 2, 2014 4:50 pm

kev-1… me think the level of volleyball played here in high school is the best…that being said.. i think the interest is here.. i know back.. when chamberlain n selleck used to make appearances.. interest was pretty high.. but sum one “up there” needs to cultivate the HS… here n do sum promoting..the leaders seem to be kam n punahou…n many of them go to mainland schools on scholarships.. even though not the top level schools.. but the top pac west schools always seem to have a sprinkling of local students…n hilo is a great volleyball town.. seen very many great players there at the Haili tournament…them old time outrigger teams were loaded with talent… crabbe… shoji…pete velasco.. not think he was on the outrigger team..maybe lanakai or lokahi? kalama…so many more… but mr. alzheimer is getting the better of me now…he he he was worth a sore ass back then to watch all day there in hilo …he he he

  67. al March 2, 2014 5:20 pm

captain midnight…just great to see you posting!

    be well brother.

  68. oldie March 2, 2014 6:08 pm

Question: Why did Max Wittek move up his visit to Hawaii?

    My 2 guesses:

First: UH asked him to move it up to get a better assessment of his desire to become a Warrior. UH is afraid the other QB possibilities may disappear while we wait on Wittek.

Second: Wittek asked to come now because he is getting pressured by Texas (or some other school on his list). That school wants Wittek’s coomitment now, or they will be moving on. Wittek may be forced to decide sooner than he wants to.

Or it could be something more innocent. Just hoping he got a good impression of our program and coaches.

  69. al March 2, 2014 6:14 pm

    someone said similar things.

i really don’t think texas is on his list.

  70. oldie March 2, 2014 6:43 pm

Nice to know if Texas is truly out of the picture.

  71. jeezy33 March 2, 2014 6:44 pm

    68. Seems like Hawaii wants a commitment soon considering a big batch of QBs that are transferring with immediate eligibility. Hard part is I don’t know how you properly evaluate these QBs with such limited game film. Hard to put too much stock into high school game film. Wittek college tape isn’t good. Rivers has no game tape. Indiana QB actually has the most success and most mobility but only 1 year remaining. Will be interesting to see how things play out. My guy I want is neither of these options but we’ll see if that guy is on the radar.

  72. kev-1 March 2, 2014 6:53 pm

#66 St.Ant . . . don’t get me wrong, I like volleyball. And I think Hawaii’s draw is probably better than most other schools. I just think over time it has faded. Even before Wilton left the men’s program.

  73. kev-1 March 2, 2014 7:11 pm

Jeezy . . . good point. Whoever UH gets, if anyone, it is a hit or miss situation.

  74. kev-1 March 2, 2014 7:11 pm

But then again, that goes with any recruit.

  75. st. anthony trojan March 2, 2014 7:16 pm

yea me agree kev.. my point always is.. marketing.. the problem with most… when things are going good…attendance wise…they stop marketing.. n is when they should do more.. n keep getting sold outs.. then eventually they can raise price of season.. cuz supply n demand..is working…me thinks that is how a very good marketing arm should work..notice.. not to much demand now 4 tickets to womens.. which at one time..our attendance was always tops…n i imagine when n iff dave goes.. the new coach.. will have to work hard to keep them seats filed…daves networking in womens volleyba;; is so far n wide…. can only imagine his contacts…

  76. A-House March 2, 2014 7:18 pm

seems like all the “early” college grads who played football spent more time in the classroom to be done in 3 years cause they never were serious contenders to be the starting QB and had very little practice or game time – just my opinion.

are there any exceptions to this? – a starting QB that grad in 3 years with 2 or 3 years left to play – I would presume only 2 years as he wants to get along in his chosen career

interesting tidbit about the internal struggles of the 49ers – guess this does not bode well for the 2014 season cause it will certainly affect morale and the willingness to play well

  77. oneseason March 2, 2014 7:22 pm

Rainbow Warrior baseball was 1-11 at the beginning of 2013, and is 6-6 at the beginning of 2014. Hopefully a shape of things to come for Coach Chow.

  78. A-House March 2, 2014 7:23 pm

any one hear if any of Dan Robinson’s daughter will matriculate to UH? someone posted last year that he attended football practice and then was seen, with daughters in tow, talking to Shoji – described as been very tall

are Suzanne Egy’s children reaching that age to being scouted for VB or BB – will she influence their decision? Would be great to see her again in the SSC.

MasaBoy’s very busy baking 2 kinds of butter mochi for the ladies in our office – they always bug him, but rarely bring in anything and share with him

  79. A-House March 2, 2014 7:25 pm

woke up cold – stayed cold even at Windward Mall – now, still cold – no wind, but cold in the valley – been raining off and on all day with some heavy showers!

    hey, no need water plants

  80. al March 2, 2014 8:03 pm

i would think graduating early has more to do with taking ap courses in hs, the brains to attack 21+ credits per semester, having the will and want to get a degree ahead of time, and, oh, being one smart buggah. nothing to do with sitting on the bench.

    come on now.

  81. st. anthony trojan March 2, 2014 8:31 pm

  84. maddog50 March 3, 2014 3:47 am

#44….they actually had 4 guys go up and down the ice next to each other on both sides go from one end to the other and another couple of guys would shovel it out. Apparently they could not use a Zamboni because the weight would crack the surface. They did have a much smaller version that would shave and resurface but it was about a third of the size. To say it was nothing short of surreal…..it snowed so hard that once they cleared the ice it was coverered again……it was really someting else. I just thawed out yesterday—-

  85. wafan March 3, 2014 3:54 am

    Happy Girl’s Day!

  86. A-House March 3, 2014 6:19 am

    #80:

explanation why SS and Reilly and Wittek had so little or no playing time? me thinks that’s bench warming!

  87. al March 3, 2014 7:54 am

    76. + 79. = 86.
don’t where you get these ideas from. maybe from a cold brain?

btw, beau reilly has never attended college.

anyway who’s side are you on UH or not?
