(2014) Class standing

Barring any late changes — and USC is pressing Punahou quarterback Larry “Tui” Tuileta to join as a “preferred walk-on” — this is the Rainbow Warriors’ tentative 2014 recruiting class:

Transfer:

• Jeremy Castro, linebacker, UCLA

Recruits:

• Tavita “Tui” Eli, offensive lineman, Kealakehe High

• Marquis Fairchild, defensive end/linebacker, Chaminade Madonna Prep (Florida)

• Cesar Fermin, cornerback, Moorpark College

• Kaau Gifford, defensive tackle, Kamehameha Schools

• Jerrell Jackson, cornerback, Haynesville High (Louisiana)

• Darian Josey, wide receiver/cornerback, Boynton Beach High (Florida)

• Daniel Lewis, safety/running back, New Iberia High (Louisiana)

• Malachi Mageo, linebacker, Junipero Serra High (California)

• Dany Mulanga, safety, Trinity High (Texas)

• Nick Nelson, cornerback, Suitland High (Maryland)

• Simon Poti, linebacker, Fullerton College (California)

• D.J. Riggins, running back, Oak Christian High (California)

• Jalen Rogers, cornerback, Mesa College (Arizona)

• Luke Shawley, defensive end, San Diego Mesa College

• Devan Stubblefield, wide receiver, Saint Louis School

• Jahlani Tavai, rush end, Mira Costa High

• Dakota Torres, tight end/linebacker/long-snapper, Punahou School

• Larry “Tui” Tuileta, quarterback, Punahou School

• Tui Unga, linebacker, Cucamonga High (California)

Grayshirts (will join in January 2015):

• Dayton Furuta, running back/receiver/defensive back, Mililani High

• Donald Lambert, wide receiver, Moanalua High

• Manly Williams, safety, Farrington High

Missions (will join in June 2016)

• Mack Richards, wide receiver, Alta High (Utah)

Notes:

• Slotback Quinton Pedroza, who redshirted in 2013 after transferring from Utah, will count retroactively as a 2013 initial recruit.

• Defensive tackle Kory Rasmussen, who also redshirted after transferring from Colorado, is not on scholarship. When he receives a scholarship, he would count as a 2014 initial recruit.

• A defensive back who previously committed to UH did not project to meet the requirements to play in 2014.

• If Tuileta decides to join USC as a walk-on, the Warriors will bring in another  quarterback. They have three who have shown strong interest — two from Division I schools, one from a junior college.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Thanks for the update!

  2. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:19 am

So how many slots do we have left? Not sure if Mack counts in this class…

  3. tommui February 2, 2014 9:19 am

But we have to wait till Wednesday to make it official – at least the high school recruits?

  4. ai-eee-soos February 2, 2014 9:19 am

    … good news …

If Tuileta decides to join USC as a walk-on, the Warriors will bring in another quarterback. They have three who have shown strong interest — two from Division I schools, one from a junior college.

  5. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:21 am

If Tuileta decides to walk on at USC, that’s not a good contingency plan to have a JC QB who other schools don’t want when Tuileta was a kid you develop for the future anyway. It means we passed on quality mid year transfer QBs to wait on Tuileta and it means we passed on other high school QBs who might have been interested in Hawaii has we been out aggressively recruiting a QB in case Tuileta decommitted.

  6. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:22 am

Unfortunate we loss 2 of our better Line recruits in Silva and Lauaki…… Really leaves a big hole in this class

  7. Haleakala February 2, 2014 9:22 am

I hope to see Tui play for the UH teams.

  8. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:23 am

I believe grayshirts sign scholarship agreements, in which UH is bound but the players aren’t.

  9. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:26 am

Lauaki is still in play because he’s going on a mission. The threat isn’t Utah State. The threat (in two years) is BYU.

  10. kapakahi February 2, 2014 9:27 am

    #6,

    Where did Silva defect to?

  11. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:28 am

    10. Don’t think he picked a school yet..

  12. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:29 am

Forgot we gotta add Falemalu and Tago to this class…

Tago looks good physically… could be sleeper

  13. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:30 am

ST… No way Unga is a LB… I know you saw how big he is…. He’s a trench guy for sure…

  14. Luki February 2, 2014 9:30 am

    Counted 1 O-Lineman, 1 D-Tackle…Hoped we could get more than that…

  15. NorthShoreFan February 2, 2014 9:30 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…GAME DAY!….GO BRONCOS!

exciting to see who our new Warriors will be.

    Mahalo ST for the updates

  16. Jason February 2, 2014 9:31 am

Where is silva and glover? Did they decommitt?

  17. Jonj February 2, 2014 9:32 am

Good win yesterday for the MBB team! Didn’t see any recruits at the game tho. Anyone else see any guys there??

  18. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:32 am

    14. Me too…. But Unga is either gonna be DT or OL…. Still we should have more..

  19. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 9:33 am

Depended so much on Tui Huh. Omg Chow. I really don’t like where Chow has brought the UH Program so here’s to hoping he flops again and they fire him mid year. Need another coach already. Chow sucks.

  20. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:33 am

    16. Glover might be the DB who didn’t meet academic requirements…

  21. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:35 am

    Jeezy:
They’re going to a three-man front so there are varying types of linebackers. But, yeah, he could be slotted as a d-end, too.

  22. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:36 am

From what I understand, Silva is heading to Utah.

  23. Jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:39 am

    21. I’m hoping naeole does what jones did with Wayne hunter… 6-5 long arms, make him a LT.

  24. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:39 am

Hmmm. And how can I phrase this … is there an impression only one QB prospect was in town this week?

  25. kapakahi February 2, 2014 9:39 am

Class looking kinda lean……i.e., not enough bulky beef……only 1 OL (considering losing Milovale & Dew……as well as medical retirements CWM & Loeffler……and Wiefels before last season)……and zero NG types (considering losing Saui……with Moses & Marcus seniors next season).

  26. Jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:41 am

    25. If it’s any consolation, lavaka should arrive next year …

  27. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 9:42 am

I still find it amazing that any athlete would want to play for someone like Chow after the two dismal seasons he’s had. Unreal! Guarantee we’d have better chances with recruits if we actually won games. Chow will go down as the worst football coach in Hawaii history.

  28. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:43 am

Calen Friel … Kory Rasmussen …

  29. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 9:44 am

Not sure how the grades situation look but DL Ray Lima – West Torrance and Isi Holani- Hilo are still available… Ray Lima was player of the year in his section. ADoree Jackson was the other player of the year in other division.

  30. kapakahi February 2, 2014 9:45 am

Other than grades, can’t think of reason(s) why Vakameilalo wouldn’t be targeted as a NG prospect by UH.

    Hmmm…..????

  31. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 9:46 am

Did you answer your own question?

  32. kapakahi February 2, 2014 9:50 am

    #26,

Always seems iffy with guys returning after an LDS mission.

  33. kapakahi February 2, 2014 9:50 am

    #31,

    I guess that…..I just did.

  34. Inyoface February 2, 2014 9:54 am

    Witteck interested?

  35. kapakahi February 2, 2014 10:02 am

    #28,

Guessing that NG candidates the upcoming season must be Moses, Calen, Kory, & Mike……with Kennedy at DT/DE.

Was thinking that Kory would be at DT/DE instead.

With injuries always seemingly an issue for NG (Moses injuried past 2 seasons), quality depth at NG still a concern.

  36. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 10:11 am

    Inyoface:
    I believe that’s not a false statement.
I think he has to wait until after May before he can do anything.

  37. KapoleiWarrior February 2, 2014 10:14 am

Whatever happened to Tigi Hill? Is he the DB that didn’t qualify?

  38. kapakahi February 2, 2014 10:17 am

Hopefully some more incoming transfers from BCS programs this year……like Castro, Pedroza & Rasmussen last year……especially any local boys returning home.

  39. Old School Dave February 2, 2014 10:19 am

Someone may have mentioned this, but I think that greyshirt Dayton Furuta, from Mililani, could be another Corey Paredes down the line.

USC is not a cheap school to attend and financial aid is not always a given. Just saying the facts.

  40. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 10:22 am

    • As any parent knows, student loans keep accumulating interest and they can never be forgiven.
    • A recruited walk-on has to wait two years to earn a scholarship or else it is counted as an initial.
    • A recruited walk-on cannot transfer to another Division I school and play immediately. He has to sit out a year.

  41. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 10:22 am

    39. I think its possible too. Needs to get a little faster but def has the instincts.

  42. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 10:24 am

As a parent, if any kid can get a full ride — whether it’s here, mainland or the North Pole — take it. And, by the way, I understand Santa has excellent benefits except for having to work the holiday season.

  43. Willie February 2, 2014 10:27 am

What is the name of the QB on a mission and when is he expected to join?

Also there is a slot back/all purpose on a mission too?

  44. Rodney February 2, 2014 10:31 am

    Good luck to Tui Tuileta!
Not sure if he would turn out to
    be a fantastic college Qb.
    We need a Schroeder(intellect,guts)
    Graham(size) Woolsey(spin it arm)
    Higgons(leadership) Quarterback for a recruit.!!!!

  45. kapakahi February 2, 2014 10:36 am

Ngalo might’ve flipped if UH tripped him this weekend……instead of choosing to become a Mustang instead of a Cougar.

  46. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 10:38 am

    45. I think he waited too long and we maxed out our LB limit for the class… Tough loss tho

  47. A-House February 2, 2014 10:47 am

Only thing about Tuileta is that he “could” start as a freshman, if selected, whereas an incoming QB from a BCS school must sit out a year unless said transfer has already graduated and I believe there are 2 or 3 in that category – just like Schroeder.

however, hope the transfer had some experience unlike Schroder who had none

“waiting in the wings” in not a favorable category to be slotted as it makes one feel like second chance date.

looks like the PNW did well again with local recruiting – 5 in the top 15.

  48. A-House February 2, 2014 10:54 am

is it or is it not a good requirement for UH when BCS schools, supposedly with high academic standards, will accept a “Prop 48” athlete and UH will not?

maybe, just maybe, a local athlete will “flop” on NLI day like Jeremy P did by signing with a PNW school several years back

  49. Fei Jai February 2, 2014 10:55 am

Chow time, baby!!! Yes!!! Winning is in the air! Tsaikos are winners! Like their messiah, norm “chow time ” chow.

  50. jm2375 February 2, 2014 10:56 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Is USC gonna let Tuileta play vb too????? Hope he decides to stay.

  51. A-House February 2, 2014 10:57 am

go or no go, I will probably see the lights on early for a certain neighbor when I go to the gym at 3:35 am on 2/5/14.

does he get the word before UH coaches? wonder what his cell phone bill is during this time of year?

  52. hossana February 2, 2014 10:58 am

Hey, Mattyboy, just shut the hell up!! Its idiots like yourself that we don’t need or consider as fans for UH football.

  53. A-House February 2, 2014 10:59 am

Zwahlen (sp) is the current UH signee that is on a mission along the east coast – don’t expect much of anything from him without time to keep in shape and practice – arrives in 2015.

    jm – believe so.

  54. A-House February 2, 2014 11:01 am

    Seahawks! Seahawks! Seahawks!

with favorable weather, I doubt the final total score will be below the “over/under”

artic chill now expected on Monday

  55. tommui February 2, 2014 11:02 am

A HOUSE – looked all over the SSC last night – where do you sit?

Is two of our naysayers the same person?

  56. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 11:03 am

    53. Attendance argues with you… We need all the fans possible…

  57. kapakahi February 2, 2014 11:03 am

    Fairchild from Florida (not California).

  58. Rodney February 2, 2014 11:07 am

    Front seven on defense?
    Any ideas who would be
    Your starters? Yap for sure!!
Are we looking good at LB?
    Matty boy please!!!! enough!!!

  59. kapakahi February 2, 2014 11:13 am

Other than Richards, noticeable absence of Utah recruits this year…..compared with 2013 (Barker, Kemp, Miller, Tupai) and 2012 (Lavaka, Moleni, Ursua).

Targeted OL/DL Khyiris Luavai but apparently lost out to the Utes.

  60. Jason February 2, 2014 11:15 am

Any word on tigi hill or malik hutchings.

  61. ai-eee-soos February 2, 2014 11:23 am

… now, the really BIG news …

Denver Broncos: Adam Schefter reports that Denver Broncos head coach John Fox has a

$1 million bonus in his contract for winning the Super Bowl.

  62. kapakahi February 2, 2014 11:24 am

Hill not the DB referenced by ST……but apparently still working to get his AA…..with a minimum 2.5 GPA to qualify to transfer……while Hutchings not currently on UH’s recruiting radar.

  63. Tired February 2, 2014 11:24 am

I can imagine Mattyboy and Fei Jai (if they are not the same person) running around naked, salivating and jumping up and down with glee every time a recruit picks someone other than UH. It’s good that there are things in life that make them happy. Keeps them off the streets and makes it a little safer for everyone.

  64. kp3409 February 2, 2014 11:40 am

53 & 59. Its called the 1st Ammendment. Use em or lose em.

  65. kp3409 February 2, 2014 11:42 am

    Amendment

  66. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 11:43 am

Easy Tired. Such a superficial comment. I speak the truth. I’m not Fei Jai either. ST can very that.

  67. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 11:50 am

Nah hossana. You shut the hell up. I’m definitely not an idiot either. For you to attack so childlishy seems to imply that you are indeed the idiot. It’s my comment Towards a Captain of a failing ship. You don’t see me making snide remarks against those who support Chow do you? So again, idiot, loser, child, etc., let it be.

  68. kapakahi February 2, 2014 11:52 am

Hopefully UH is “recruiting” some of its own local homegrown “preferred walk-ons” to stay home.

  69. Tired February 2, 2014 11:54 am

67…just adding a little levity to the conversation….what with all the wishes for coach C to “flop” and all

  70. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 11:56 am

And yeah hosanna, for you to get off of your high horses for one such as I to speak perspective, objectively, makes me wonder what is cognitively going on in that head of yours. On second thought, I don’t really care.

  71. Rodney February 2, 2014 11:59 am

    Good luck Coach Chow!
    Payton Manning is the best
    but Gooooo Seahawks!!!!!
    Pound the rock Marshan!!!!

  72. AllG February 2, 2014 12:01 pm

Sucks that we lost Silva…Thought he was one of our best recruits…Can’t be more worried about our lack of depth at DT. Games are won and lost in the trenches. If Samia goes down again like he has the past two season there is a SERIOUS drop off from him to the NT behind him.

  73. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 12:02 pm

    70.

Ok Truthfully now….Has Chow done anything really that should merit one to speak highly of him? In my opinion, which one would perceive to be empirically factual, is that Chow, in general, has regressed rather than progressed. Can we not agree on that?

  74. al February 2, 2014 12:03 pm

did you guys know that these recruits read this blog?
show some class or go home.

    …nuff said!!!

  75. Tired February 2, 2014 12:14 pm

74…Mattyboy…..yes we can agree the last two seasons were painful to watch and coach Chow is the leader of the pack…..so the failure clearly rests on his shoulders…….but I hope he succeeds this year….if he doesn’t I think UH athletics is in big trouble…..getting an athlete like Tui to sign with UH would be a great get….historically those with his profile have gone away….if Tui bolts I have no idea of who we have in the wings as QB….coach Mac seemed to keep a large stock of QB’s around, many of whom seemed marginal….I don’t think it is unwise to try to use the scholarships at other positions if you feel that those currentlyin the pipeline are the future at QB….if Tui goes to USC I wish him well and I hope we have a capable alternate…..the presumption that coach Chow depended too much on Tui signing and might now be lost is speculation…..let’s wait and see….I’m not a coach Chow supporter or detractor…..but I do hope we have a winning season and he can prove his critics wrong….why hope for failure?

  76. MattyBoy February 2, 2014 12:23 pm

    77.,

Well stated. I’ll agreeably side with your statement.

  77. 99club February 2, 2014 12:35 pm

A huge welcome to all recruits. I look forward to driving literally thousands of miles in the next few years just to see you guys play. Congratulations on making the decision to play for Hawaii. But don’t forget your primary job: study and get good grades!

  78. 99club February 2, 2014 12:45 pm

By the way. Seattle all day long. Half/Game/Money line.

  79. kapakahi February 2, 2014 12:46 pm

Sounds like all the weekend visitors enjoyed their official visits…..despite the untimely bad weather.

  80. kapakahi February 2, 2014 12:47 pm

Rain was supposed to wait til next weekend…..for the Punahou Carnival.

  81. kapakahi February 2, 2014 12:50 pm

    #46,

Probably the case…..but woulda been nice to land Ngalo…..to strengthen that recruiting connection with Trinity HS.

  82. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 12:53 pm

Is ethan watanabe still on the team? Kinda surprised we didn’t recruit his brother Grant.

  83. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 12:54 pm

Ethan Watanabe left to go on a mission last year. At least that was the word.

  84. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 12:59 pm

    damn so many mission kids….

  85. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 1:01 pm

I’m not sure 2-for-1 recruiting is that impactful. The lesson of college is you’re not in high school anymore. You don’t have to go to college with all of your high school buds.

  86. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 1:05 pm

At the old Advertiser, we made job offers to two couples figuring that it enhanced the chances of landing the preferred recruits. In the first instance, the spouse accepted and the other didn’t. In the second, the couple ended up divorcing.

  87. PurpleMaple February 2, 2014 1:15 pm

New infusion marginal, coupled with key outbound transfers (Trevor Davis, Drake Miller. Kwamane Bowens) makes it difficult to see sunny skies down the road. Although 2014 looks very promising, a lot will depend on whether Ikaika Woolsey can turn it up this spring. Frightening to think there aren’t other QBs “in-waiting” beyond 2014 if Tuileta goes to USC. Can’t count on Aaron Zwahlen to come back to Hawaii, plus can’t expect him to be in football shape for couple of years upon his return in 2015.

  88. 99club February 2, 2014 1:17 pm

    #87. Homewreckers. 🙂

  89. kapakahi February 2, 2014 1:20 pm

    al,

Lost some (Lauaki & Silva) so hoping that UH coaches successfully poach/flip at least a couple replacements in these last few days.

  90. al February 2, 2014 1:32 pm

lauaki was headed to a two year mission. so his flipping is inconsequential. it gives us more room now.

losing silva was huge. some of my pordagee brothers going cancel their tickets now. all kidding aside silva had that next level potential. he should have tripped.

meanwhile i am confident we’ll have a good class of ’14. there is a contingency list of prospects.

remember that adam leonard was a post nli day recruit.

  91. al February 2, 2014 1:34 pm

i wonder if mr. ahouse wants to double or nothing?
he of the seahawks and me for the old gray mares?

  92. st. anthony trojan February 2, 2014 2:01 pm

what about that dude from baldwin.. at QB…??

  93. al February 2, 2014 2:02 pm

    purplemaple
mr. tsai alluded to a subliminal message above about some qb who may have been seen surfing on the beach at waikiki.

    recently.

  94. Jeezy33 February 2, 2014 2:06 pm

Unger getting beat bad so far

  95. Old School Dave February 2, 2014 2:08 pm

Any word on the young man (linebacker who was Oregon bound) from Baldwin High and if he is reconsidering his decision to give up football?

  96. kapakahi February 2, 2014 2:52 pm

Today’s game…..at least the 1st half anyways….supports why recruiting class is weighted towards improving the defense.

  97. Jeezy33 February 2, 2014 3:03 pm

    97. hopefully we have a pass rush this year.. If shawley, Castro, jgw get to the Qb, makes nequan, Rogers, trayvon, maggit job a lot easier covering. KT and beau yap can add heat from interior too…

No disrespect intended but Woodard disappeared after USC game.

  98. Former UH Athlete February 2, 2014 3:07 pm

This SB is like watching a replay of USC v Fresno (Las Vegas Bowl).

  99. Abunai February 2, 2014 3:08 pm

So on this weekend visits who is here??? Anyone can give out that info??

  100. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 3:21 pm

    Bruno wins…

  101. Old Diver February 2, 2014 3:23 pm

Bruno Mars is an incredible talent.

  102. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:27 pm

    #100,

On their way back home already.

  103. Rodney February 2, 2014 3:28 pm

    #93 Yes!!!!!

  104. al February 2, 2014 3:29 pm

Biggest local star in the entertainment world.
    .

  105. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:30 pm

    #91,

That’s why it might’ve been a good idea to trip Ngalo this weekend……as a contingency……since he obviously wasn’t so committed to the other UH.

  106. Abunai February 2, 2014 3:31 pm

    #103
Can you name them?? Who was here??

  107. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:33 pm

    #91,

Wonder if UH is/was really pursuing Marts or not……as a contingency.

    Hmmm….

  108. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:37 pm

    #107,

Since ST hasn’t, then probably a good idea not to……due to probable gag-order by NC.

Don’t wanna be like Tanaka & Cherry.

  109. Da Punchbowl Kid February 2, 2014 3:41 pm

    Welcome to the new Warriors!

  110. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:41 pm

For the Denver Bronco fans, this SB must feel like……the 2008 Sugar Bowl felt for us UH fans…..except even worse.

  111. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 3:43 pm

Mahalo ST for such a detailed list. Can’t believe it’s this Wednesday already.

On another note, this Super Bowl is a blow out. Broncos never recovered from 1st play of this game. Should have pulled a black out like SF down 9-0. Really sad for Manning and Bronco fans.

  112. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 3:46 pm

Yes Bruno was excellent today. Not sure why they added Red Hot Chili Peppers. Couldn’t understand what they sang/rapped.

  113. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:48 pm

    #100 & #107,

BTW still trying to figure who the big guy is that visited 2 weekends ago.

  114. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:51 pm

Seahawks showing Broncos right now how real tackle football is played…..not pass league football.

  115. 99club February 2, 2014 3:55 pm

I had heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers were going to do a Led Zeppelin cover and was looking forward to it. Oh well.

  116. kapakahi February 2, 2014 3:58 pm

Kaepernick & Crabtree….and all the other 49ers…..must be feeling sick today.

  117. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 3:58 pm

    109. Don’t think its a big deal… All the visitors were commits anyway… So really no surprises.

  118. BigWave96744 February 2, 2014 3:59 pm

When the wonder blunder happened! many said UH should have contacted Bruno Mars for a fundraiser concert.
    Too bad that never happened.
Watch tomorrow 2 Bruno Mars concert will be sold out in record time.

  119. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:07 pm

While I agree that UH needs to find a solid QB to sling the rock, I’ll take a solid defense first.

  120. Whats up February 2, 2014 4:07 pm

Until the letters are signed and faxed this Wednesday, every recruit can be poached by UH or vice versa. Every year we get put through a crazy ride.

  121. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 4:09 pm

    120. You only need 1 QB tho… gotta put in effort to find that 1

  122. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:10 pm

The 2013 UH Rainbow Warriors were more competitive in all of its games last season…..compared to today’s Broncos.

Turning out to be one of the worst SB blowout ever. Just imagine how bad it would be if the Seahawks had a high-powered offense.

  123. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:12 pm

    #122,

Yup! Gotta find that 1 solid QB.

  124. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:13 pm

Good TD for Broncos. Gotta keep it respectable.

  125. boolakanaka February 2, 2014 4:15 pm

40 ST, actually, while certainly not liberal, student loans can either forgiven and/or discharged for a variety of reasons: including Total and Permanent Disability, bankruptcy and about 8 other categories, see: http://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation#when-can-my-federal

  126. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 4:15 pm

I keep saying, UH can have Aaron Rogers as QB. No matter if the oline not improved. That where it all begins. Yes Schroeder had a good last few games but I personally think it was inferior opponents than the beginning if the season.

  127. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:16 pm

    #121,

Interesting that both Chow’s last school (Utah Utes) and Clune’s last school (Utah State Aggies) seem be the most active poachers……of UH commits.

  128. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:19 pm

    #127,

Hopefully NC is as good a talent evaluator for QBs……as is JJ…..and/or Jeff Tedford (former Cal HC who spotted Aaron Rogers playing at Butte College).

  129. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:29 pm

Did you know that……Seahawk WR Jermaine Kearse attended the UH Football Camp back in 2007…..and was eventually offered by JJ?

  130. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:31 pm

    Today’s game definitely doesn’t help Peyton’s legacy.

  131. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 4:32 pm

Has there every been a college team that brings the Boom like the Seahawks? Such a hard hitting team. Maybe the best ever?

  132. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 4:34 pm

#131, I don’t agree that today’s game doesn’t help Mannings legacy. I like to look at the players entire season and not only one game.

  133. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:39 pm

    #133,

Didn’t say today’s game hurt his legacy…..just that it doesn’t help……since it would’ve been nice to add to his great career…..with a signature performance.

  134. Former UH Athlete February 2, 2014 4:40 pm

131… Mannings legacy will take a hit. He’s been bad. He’s had some poor throws when not pressured. Settle’s pass rush early in the game appears to have gotten into Peyton’s head. He’s not even looking for a deep route. He’s been relegated to dumping the ball to the outlet at times when he’s not being pressured.

  135. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:41 pm

True redemption for Pete Carroll…..after failing at New England during his first stint as an NFL HC.

  136. Former UH Athlete February 2, 2014 4:41 pm

But first and foremost, gotta give credit to Seattle’s defense.

  137. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:44 pm

Eli looks as sad…..as Peyton does.

  138. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 4:48 pm

Wonder how Carroll’s detractors feel based on what happened at USC? I think it proves a rah rah style works in the NFL but it seems like much credit should go to the GM that brought all of this talent to Seattle.

PS sorry for misreading your comment Kapakahi.

  139. kapakahi February 2, 2014 4:49 pm

If Tui ends up picking SC over UH, definitely not going to help with relationship (or non-relationship to be more accurate) between Sark and Chow……

    http://www.insidesocal.com/usc/2014/02/02/usc-trying-to-add-one-more-qb/

  140. ai-eee-soos February 2, 2014 4:52 pm

    # 132.

” … Seahawks? Such a hard hitting team. Maybe the best ever? …”

The 2000 Ravens was pretty good too.

  141. ai-eee-soos February 2, 2014 4:56 pm

    # 140

I was wondering why Sark still like cock-a-rooch players from 808.

He can practically get any player he wants.

mebbe he still like needle Chow.

  142. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 5:02 pm

I though the beef while at USC was between Chow and Kiffen? What was Sarks beef with Chow all about?

  143. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:03 pm

    #142,

Well-known fact in LA…..that they have not been on speaking terms…..ever since Chow left SC.

  144. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 5:04 pm

Is it only me but I didn’t think any commercial was special like prior years.

  145. el burro sabio February 2, 2014 5:07 pm

If my kid had a full-ride offer at Humboldt State (0-11 last year) and a preferred walk-on with partial financial aid offer at UH, he’s going to Humboldt State. You take the free education every time.

  146. Old School Dave February 2, 2014 5:11 pm

Preferred walk-on sounds like someone important. I think Sark is just messing with Chow.

    USC tuition per semester: $22,801.00

    http://www.usc.edu/academics/classes/term_20133/tuition_and_fees.html

  147. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:16 pm

    #143,

My SC alum friends speculate that……Carroll often deferred to Sark (then the QB Coach) and/or Kiffin (then the TE/WR Coach)……instead of Chow (then the OC)……which apparently strained relationships between Chow……with Carroll as well as with Sark & Kiffin.

Strained relationship (or non-relationship) between Chow and Sark…..supposedly even more so than with Carroll and/or Kiffin……because Chow was Sark’s mentor and OC at BYU.

  148. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:20 pm

JMHO but no way Furuta a candidate to ever play receiver and/or defensive back. Strictly either a future FB and/or ILB candidate.

  149. Old School Dave February 2, 2014 5:24 pm

This year’s SB commercials were so so. Did like the T Mobile one with Tim Tebow, which was pretty funny.

  150. Old Diver February 2, 2014 5:28 pm

    148

Thought what happened was Carroll brought in Sark and Kiffen to run the offense in order to get Chow to leave.

  151. Warrior Dave February 2, 2014 5:36 pm

#148, thanks for the explanation Kapakahi. I remember reading that Carroll did think too much credit was being given to Chow for USCs success. Guess Sark and Kiffen sided with Carroll.

  152. Stephen Tsai February 2, 2014 5:50 pm

Actually, Chow and Carroll are better friends than Carroll and Kiffen or Carroll and Sarkesian.

  153. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:54 pm

    #151,

Chow coached together with both Sark and Kiffin from 2001 through 2004…..under Pete Carroll…..before leaving to the NFL Tennessee Titans.

  154. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 5:58 pm

    149. He can long snap too… Wondering if that plays a factor.

  155. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:59 pm

Guess we won’t know how Chow and Sark would greet each other before and after games…..since SC not currently scheduled for any future UH games.

  156. kapakahi February 2, 2014 5:59 pm

    #155,

    So does Gifford.

  157. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 6:04 pm

really? thought Calen Scott Holt was the LS… Could be wrong though.

  158. kapakahi February 2, 2014 6:17 pm

    #157,

For sure at least in the 4 ILH regular season games…….the ones against Punahou & Saint Louis……that I attended.

  159. kapakahi February 2, 2014 6:20 pm

    #159,

Was on all KSK special team units.

  160. kapakahi February 2, 2014 6:23 pm

    #158,

Speaking of Holt, JMHO that he and Souza would be ideal walk-on candidates……especially for special team units.

  161. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 6:31 pm

    Going to Army…

  162. kapakahi February 2, 2014 6:49 pm

    Holt and/or Souza?

  163. kapakahi February 2, 2014 6:52 pm

Holt gonna be a Black Knight.

    What about Souza?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vcs0iLkea0

  164. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 6:58 pm

    Top walk on candidates….

DT. Isi Holani – probably deserves a scholarship somewhere
    DE- Kelii Padello
    LB Jacob Afele
    ATH. Jacob McEnroe
    RB- Sanele Lavatai
    OL- Mason Semisi
    DL- Motu Heimuli
    LB- Micah Paris
    OL- Davis Miyashiro-Saipaia
OL- Dane Chung- Small but I actually think he could crack the 2 deep depth chart.
    OL- Adam Amosa

Probably left some guys out but if any of these guys walked on, that would be nice pick ups..

  165. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 6:58 pm

    164. No clue about Souza.

  166. boolakanaka February 2, 2014 7:01 pm

135_Spot on, FUHA. Manning looked and acted old this evening. He looked sluggish, limited, confused and really immobile. Great system and great student of the game versus really great athletes who are in synergy with their own system, and well, the athletes won by a long shot. Peyton has lost more big games of consequence than he has won–he is still a HOF first ballot guy, but he will also be remembered as failing to rise in the majority of those big games—and those are just the facts.

  167. jeezy33 February 2, 2014 7:08 pm

Considering Sammy Lauaki was a mission recruit, it wouldn’t hurt to make a last minute push on Isaiah Nacua. Much better than Lauaki and still not committed

  168. Former UH Athlete February 2, 2014 8:14 pm

167… Manning is turning out to be a smarter version of Dan Marino. Marino had a bigger arm and put up tremendous numbers way back before the offense friendly rules were installed, but like Manning, he also had way more poor performances in the biggest games big games than good ones.

  169. Viking February 2, 2014 8:21 pm

    Congrats to Seattle Seahawks ….
Warriors conditioning & weight training …Man up! go Bows!

  170. kapakahi February 2, 2014 8:36 pm

    #165,

    Liking your walk-on candidate list…..

Holani & Heimuli ats DT/DE in the 3-4 front……Miyashiro-Saipaia & Amosa as interior OL types…….while McEnroe has the athleticism and physical tools to contribute at either WR, DB, and/or special teams.

  171. gobows February 2, 2014 9:46 pm

how the hell does the nfl’s #1 offense play like kaka? guess you can never underestimate the effects of new jersey.

  172. kev-1 February 2, 2014 10:10 pm

Question: Say you’re a junior . . . you can’t perform at the combine and decide not to go pro, right? If you did, that means you’ve declared for the NFL?

I am wondering if al or jeezy knows why I’m asking.

  173. kev-1 February 2, 2014 10:20 pm

Interesting about Tuileta also. Reading the other board and it seems like people are worked up about him considering USC. I truly feel he is a better get for the volleyball team than the football team anyway. Just my personal opinion.

  174. al February 2, 2014 10:43 pm

    165…nice list.
I really like heimuli. I think he could play as a true frosh.
lavatai for what he did after switching to rb after a couple games at safety has a lot of upside and is game fast.

  175. al February 2, 2014 10:44 pm

173…my brain stay slow right now. help me on this one.

  176. kev-1 February 2, 2014 10:47 pm

I heard something to night that might be bad news. I don’t want to say anything prematurely, especially since the source is not guaranteed. Hear of any jrs thinking of turning pro?

  177. al February 2, 2014 11:02 pm

    lost in the shuffle…
    no forget the redshirts;

    Barry Higdon
    Keelan Ewaliko
    John Wa’a
    Kiha Sai
    Elijah Tupai
    Dejon Allen
    David Manoa
    Meffy Koloamatangi

  178. al February 2, 2014 11:07 pm

177…I really don’t feel that any one junior has the measurables. nor reputation. the 1 or 2 have too much of list of oweeees

  179. el burro sabio February 2, 2014 11:38 pm

The NFL already issued the list of players that declared for the draft.

  180. wafan February 3, 2014 3:24 am

    Good morning!

  181. boolakanaka February 3, 2014 3:59 am

As they say in the NFL, defense travels well. Holding true to historical form, when a top D , encounters a top O, D wins out 4 out of 5.

  182. Manoa2 February 3, 2014 5:23 am

Looking at how various recruiting services view our class shows progress by Chow, but we are still way behind most of the teams in the Mountain West. Patience is in order since it will take time for Chow to learn how to recruit better. In the meantime he needs to coach the players up and use schemes that allow us to be competitive even with lesser talent- both offensively like we did last year and defensively which we did not do.

  183. Shoko February 3, 2014 5:38 am

Only person I can think of considering going pro is Scott Harding. I’m not talking about NFL pro but maybe going back to playing Australian football.

It’s hard to think folks that bought SB XLVIII tickets got their monies worth. Brightside is that they got to see a Bruno Mars mini concert in person.

  184. JayT February 3, 2014 6:54 am

How about a straight up swap between USC and Hawaii? USC gets Tui. Hawaii gets Max Wittek, who will graduate and be able to play immediately.

  185. Hilo Moon February 3, 2014 8:00 am

I don’t know if this is the right forum, but I would like to say that Renee Fleming’s excellent rendition of our the “Star Spangled Banner” made me forget that this is not only a game between two teams of two great American cities. She made it feel that this is a celebration of all that is good in every city, town, village, and settlement of the USA. Mahalo, Ms. Fleming.
