Match day: UC San Diego

The match won’t be televised and there’s a little competition from some event at Aloha Stadium, but the volleyball Rainbow Warriors play UC San Diego this afternoon in the Stan Sheriff Center.

First serve is at 5 p.m.

The Warriors are 4-2 an 2-1 in the MPSF. Middle Taylor Averill is off to a good start.

* * * * *

The merits of the Pro Bowl can be debated.

The thing is, it seems to make folks around here happy. You can see it when a fan, behind a fence, yells to a player from his favorite team, and the player responds with a thumb’s up sign. And for a week, Honolulu becomes South Beach. There’s more of a buzz around town.

Oahu’s an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are no pro teams. There are no Fortune 500 companies. For one week, this gets to be Cinderella. Nothing wrong with that.

  7. Warrior Dave January 26, 2014 8:54 am

Awesome win last night by UH basketball team. Congrats Coach Gib and the boys. Now let’s pack the SSC beginning Thursday night!!!

  8. Stephen Tsai January 26, 2014 8:55 am

    I think it’s $50,000/$25,000.

  9. Stephen Tsai January 26, 2014 8:56 am

I remember when it was $10,000/$5,000. Lawrence Taylor was grumbling how it was a break-even trip. It’s much nicer now.

  10. azwarrior22 January 26, 2014 9:01 am

Do the Pro Bowlers still practice at my HS alma mater, Radford HS? The Pro Bowl has really diminished in its appeal.

  18. tommui January 26, 2014 11:14 am

When are those contracts for Coaches Arnold and Beeman going to be finalized? In theory it was already in the works before the season began?!!!

  19. Inyoface January 26, 2014 11:53 am

The Pro Bowl diminished ever since they played before the Super Bowl instead of after. Who would want to see it if the Super Bowl guys aren’t in it?

  20. NotNasti January 26, 2014 12:01 pm

The men’s BB game was epic last night. After the game, I was spent. Tried watching other sports and programs on TV afterwards but ended up turning it off. Everything else seemed pedestrian and boring. I wanted to watch the game again! It was the most memorable road win probably since we beat Utah State at their place in 2004 (NIT 1st round), and this game was more exciting. Shamburger’s aunty kissed that ball into the basket at the end of regulation. I also thought that he was fouled on the play and should have had a chance at a 4 point play.

  21. NotNasti January 26, 2014 12:04 pm

I hope Mamadou Ndiaye turns pro after this year. What a beast. Hack-a-Dou?

  22. ALLAN January 26, 2014 12:19 pm

PRO BOWL WILL POSITIVELY NOT BE HERE NEXT YEAR. IN SO MANY WORDS,THE BOSSMAN SED SO. NOBODY ELSE COUNTS.

  23. Inyoface January 26, 2014 12:20 pm

It was nice he fouled out.

  24. Slugger January 26, 2014 12:22 pm

Let’s GO BOWS! Keep going VolleyBows!

Congrats to the Wahine basketball team on their win at home!

Great win on the road for the BasketBows! Congrats!

azwarrior22, don’t know about the Pro-Bowl-ers practicing at Radford, but do know that (Rice’s team) was practicing out on the Ceded Lands on the Wessai.

Gotta run errands before the game starts. Always nice to see the blue skies & palm trees.

    Have a wonderful Sunday, Tsaikos!

  25. SteveM January 26, 2014 12:38 pm

    Good morning everyone!

Pro Bowl Sunday caps a great week of public relations for locals and boosts to Hawaii tourism kala. I’m curious to see how todays game plays out…

  26. jonj January 26, 2014 12:40 pm

Agreed notnasti! After the game I just couldn’t stop thinking about what a crazy emotional roller coaster that was!

  27. Ipu Man January 26, 2014 12:59 pm

$50,000…is a lot of motivation, no?

  28. RainbowCliff January 26, 2014 12:59 pm

Good Afternoon Tsaiko Nation, The Bows basketball team won a gutsy game vs. Irvine last night with HEART and determination. Great to see my former team bring back excitement to the Islands and rejuvenate great interest to all Hawaii sports fans. It’s been a long journey to get back where Rainbow Basketball has ALWAYS been a stellar program with GREAT players wearing the green and white over the years as Tom Henderson, Fabulous Five, Dynamic Duo, Melton Werts, Tommy Barker, Trevor Ruffin and Chris Gaines (RIP) just to name a few will be PROUD today watching this good Rainbow Team represent the Aloha State and play EXCITING Division I basketball.

The Big West Conference is just right for the Bows as the competition here from the many Southern California schools will bring it every night as preparation, focus, execution and HEART will be played through out the season from those teams the Bows must match and play even harder to over come the athletic talent that many of the Big West schools have with the rich talent of high school and JC athletes too choose from here in Los Angeles.

This home stand coming up will have the BEST of the Big West teams coming too Oahu. Hopefully UH fans will come out and support the Bows as they are going to need it with Long Beach State, Santa Barbara, Northridge and Cal Poly ALL good teams who can win at home and on the road with athletic skill players as Northridge forward Stephen Maxwell is a jumping high light film, Santa Barbara Big Man Williams is a BEAST and Lamb from Long Beach State is coming into form since transferring from UCLA.

Have a GREAT day Tsaiko Nation and come out this Thursday and root for the Rainbow Warrior basketball team. They need your support !

The brand new 4,000 passenger Norwegian Getaway cruise ship, arrived in New York around midnight HST. If you are one of the lucky 4,000 people invited by Bud Light to spend Thursday through Sunday at their designated Super Bowl hotel, rest assured that it has arrived.

The early arrival must be for preparation and leeway in case of delays since the ship just left the shipyard in Germany 2 weeks ago and had to cross the Atlantic. If Murphy’s Law kicked in, at least this moving mega resort arrived in time. After the Super Bowl, the ship will depart for Miami, which will be it’s year-round home port.

BTW, the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders were named the Godmothers of the Getaway last October. Imagine if Dolphins made the super bowl this year. 🙂

I was surprised how much the students were into their team in Irvine. Had an ACC type cheering section.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Great Afternoon All!

Grace Potter doing the NA…if I was in Paris!

  34. Warrior Dave January 26, 2014 2:42 pm

I’ve gone to every Pro Bowl game except one. Today is the second. At the end of last year, I decided to boycott based on the NFL’s decision not to renew on a continuing basis. Me personal opinion is that Hawaii revived the game almost 30 years ago. The players love coming to a non NFL city like Hawaii. If Roger Goodell and his staff feels like Hawaii is under paying to have the game here and wants to get a bigger paycheck from another city so be it. But that doesn’t mean I have to continue to support it if and when it comes to Hawaii. So Roger can take his ball and go elsewhere for all I care. Without continuity in Hawaii, it will be harder to sell out and puts more pressure to pay more for the game.

  35. d1shima January 26, 2014 2:44 pm

When did they change the designation of the Pro Bowl brain trusts to the losing Divisional HC’s?

  36. d1shima January 26, 2014 2:54 pm

Unis look like old school Buccaneers versus a practice squad…

  37. jeezy33 January 26, 2014 3:00 pm

    21. He has to polish his game way more before he goes pro. I think he’l be back for at least 1 more year. He has no offensive moves at this point. We do need to recruit a true Center I think though so we can contain him..

  38. st anthony trojan January 26, 2014 3:02 pm

wd…me agree with u on that one…should not renew it…should take it elsewhere..if he thinks we dont deserve it..it is ok.. but is chicken s..t to try to deal like that..with threats..n sort of big brother blackmail..maybe even bullying…to try n get more kala…from the state…even i know that lot of people n businesses rely on it for a big payday..when all them activities are in town…freekin greed is getting out of hand…same with the nc two a…all is 4 a kala now…n that deal is all about kala… never 4 the fans…oceanic included…at it seemed to me when i was there…that k-5…was about getting the product out to the public.. n sumone mentioned in here..that most of their crew is at oceanic now.. wonder if they all got raises..or cut in pay….IMUA MENS VB…. GEEFF…EM AGAIN…

  39. d1shima January 26, 2014 3:03 pm

Brees would much rather be at a lagoon at Ko Olina.

  40. d1shima January 26, 2014 3:08 pm

    Nap time…

  41. bowwar January 26, 2014 3:18 pm

I agree the UH Mens BB team probably needs to recruit a true center…if not, an athletic 6-9 power forward with hops. So good to see the MBB team doing so well.

  42. jeezy33 January 26, 2014 3:56 pm

    41. Yeah, someone who can protect the rim… The way the new college rules works with the fouls, less chargers and you need someone who can block, alter shots inside.

  43. Warrior Dave January 26, 2014 4:41 pm

    #37 Jeezy,

Agree that a true center would be great. But this team reminds me of the versatility of our bigs to play the center position. Kind of like the Miami Heat! Haha.

  44. jeezy33 January 26, 2014 5:15 pm

    43. Haha, unfortunately we don’t have the best player in the game though. We need to win the next 4..

  45. jeezy33 January 26, 2014 5:48 pm

is it me or was that actually a entertaining pro bowl?

  46. Inyoface January 26, 2014 5:55 pm

That was actually a good game!

  47. Warrior Dave January 26, 2014 8:13 pm

Look likes the new format works. Good luck Roger Goodell in the next city and when it fails, hope Hawaii Tourism Authority remembers and doesn’t allow Roger to hold is hostage any more.

  48. wafan January 27, 2014 3:25 am

    Good morning!

  49. Boolakanaka January 27, 2014 6:24 am

To the question on whether 50k is a significant motivation for the Pro Bowl players? Well, I did a precursory average salary of the rosters, and it was a tad above 3 million. Now, this takes into account the premier players in the league on one end, versus players just coming into notoriety–so it’s statistically skewed.

That said, if you divide the regular season into that figure, it’s 200k, per game. Thus, the Pro Bowl is worth about 1/4 of their regular weekly salary. For us mere mortals, 50K is a lot of scratch, and for players new to the league it might amount to something–but for established stars, not so much. It’s the amount they designate, per their wife’s request, for their lazy brother-in-law to do a kitchen/bath renovation….
