Aggressive move
A few years ago, a UH defensive plan was designed with a hybrid in mind. He would be used as a stand-up defensive end — the “joker,” the “Chad Brown-type” — who could create chaos because of his unpredictability. Is he a pass-rusher? Is he a drop-back linebacker? Will he be aligned on the strong or weak side? That was the goal, although it didn’t have as much traction as hoped.
In the search for the next UH defensive coordinator, an unwritten requirement was experience with a multiple-attacking system. That scheme probably has the most flexibility out of a 3-4 base.
Kevin Clune, Utah State’s linebacker coach the past five years, is familiar with those schemes. He also is familiar with the diverse offenses in the Mountain West Conference and how to attack them.
The expectations aren’t necessarily to replicate the Aggies’ success. The requirement, though, will be to make the best use of high-ceiling players such as Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Benneton Fonua, Beau Yap, Julian Gener and Jeremy Castro. For the Warriors to improve, the first step is to fulfill the wish of creating a defense that will keep offenses guessing.

I seem to recall someone mentioning one of the reasons why Jeremy Castro left the Bruins was because of the scheme Spanos was running (multiple 3-4 base).
Anyway, is Gouveia a confirmed hire?
Maybe UH should experiment with moving Beau Yap to middle LB this spring. Like June Jones did with Chris Brown. This guy has a motor that doesn’t stop. He will plug up the middle. I don’t think there is a guard or center in the MWC that can block him in open space. Have Beemer get him down about 25-30 lbs this off season and he’ll be able to cover the pass from tackle to tackle.
I think Stephen Tsai would make a good coach…
I would also think luke shawley would be a standup pass rusher as well

That was quite the psychotic episode he had in Vegas, though. Unfortunately, not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Can’t wait to see him on the field.
I believe hiring Clune is a step in the right direction for a younger, experienced defensive coach.
I do have trouble in connecting the dots with Clune as a LB coach and seemingly giving him credit for the DEFENSIVE statistics for USU last year. He was but a piece of the entire pie and I’m sure contributed to that success.
I must have read ST’s story line differently – I should have interpreted it to mean that Clune contributed to USU’s statistics rather mindlessly read that Clune was responsible for USU’s impressive defensive stats.
Like my “statistics” prof said, you can conduct a survey with all the questions stacked to the outcome you desire. She come to class the first day, read chapter 1-3, and we will discuss any questions next class. Then told us that she had a meeting with her “partners” to discuss their “side-business”. She did that every class for the entire semester. Now, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth of how she treated us and the constant demand from Musto for more pay. Hope others did not suffer the same fate as our class.

The multiple front, chaotic defense is what helped Auburn shut down FSU in the title game in the first half even though Auburn’s defense isn’t very good.
FSU’s talent, ultimately, was too much but Auburn showed that a poor defense can cause some serious problems if they are unpredictable. FSU was totally confused on blocking assignment all throughout the first half and was forced to abandon their deep passing game for a while because they could protect Winston.
I’m just happy a DC was hired before the dead period is over. Clune will be recruiting at full speed once Jan 15 rolls around.
In was reading some of the post from yesterday and some of the Hawaii faithful have a problem with Clune being hired bescause he is not from Hawaii locally. But love the local Waianae boy possibly getting hired in Kurt Gouvea. SMH, some of you have got to stop being so prejudice and racist about who is being recruited or hired UH. What matters is can the mainland player or coach help Hawaii Football win games, not if they have Utah ties or not from Hawaii or Mormon or some other non sense that has nothing to do with how they can help Hawaii Football win games.
I don’t know right now if Kevin Clune or Waianae boy Kurt Gouvea can help Hawaii win games and out recruit the other MWC, PAC 12 teams for highly talented local and mainland recruits. And I’m pretty sure nobody knows yet, until next season starts and as far as recruit ability of Clune and possible LB coach hire Gouvea we shall see in the future. Staying objective about UH hiring and recruiting is not easy but being prejudice or racist about it is naive, inmature and just wrong.
California looking for a DC; Def staff being overhauled.
Cal: Sonny Dykes has announced that defensive tackles coach Barry Sacks and defensive backs coach Randy Stewart will not return next season. Defensive coordinator Andy Buh has been reassigned to be a position coach, and a new defensive coordinator has not been named.
Will be interesting to see who gets hired – some big name DC, or … ?

I hope Hawaii can rotate 8 D linemen this year like Auburn did all season. You can see how fresh the D stays even though a team as good as Florida St eventually wore them down.
Yap, Tulimasealii, Samia, Shawley, Castro, Friel, Rasmussen, Malepeai looks like a solid rotation.
Going to be very important that Hawaii can sign 2 JC LBs who can come in and run sideline to sideline and drop back in coverage. Once Gener went down, Hawaii lost the ability to cover screens and passes over the middle. Daley and Laurel didn’t have the speed or cover ability and were exposed in the passing game and on runs to the outside.
Should be an interesting spring, especially on defense with the new DC. Mr. Clune has really worked his way up the coaching ladder – high school, JUCO, Div-IAA, and now Div-IA.
18–Good points! When I was at UH there were not a single coach from Hawai’i, although the GAs were Nelson Maeda, Sam Papalii and Duane Akina. Bottom line–recruiting did not suffer, and the wins and losses of those teams spoke for themselves. That said, if we have talented, qualified local applicants, –yes, lets give those guys a serious look. However, like anything else, its the total package of the applicant and not a just a couple of features, that usually win out.
I don’t like or hate this hire. But I do see the potential in this being a good move. I just hope he doesn’t run man coverage majority of the time. I think UH can only afford to use a schollie on 1 or 2 more Defensive players. Hopefully another JC LB like Tigi HIll and maybe another CB. But we most def need a JC QB and RB.
If people stay healthy and play to their ability, I really like our DL- we are deep with some good experience. I believe the thing we should focus on is getting a QB. I really think Chow should pick one after spring ball so he can open camp as the starter
And I like the DC hire. And it is funny how some people all of sudden wish we still had Dave Aranda. I can remember reading a lot of people calling for his head. Things are always better when looking back at them.
Funny, it was that UH loss to Utah State (one the turned around their season) back in 2011 that was the final straw for many regarding the defense under Dave Aranda. UH held a 31-14 lead in the third quarter and USU came back to win 35-31.

UH, back in the day, seemed to bring in coaches who were on the rebound or had been fired at their previous schools, but who did well enough to move on to bigger programs. Guys like Dave Fagg, Doug Kay, Larry McDuff, Adam Rita, among others.
that was the problem with TK, he could not devise a defense for the hurry up offenses that many of the mountain west teams used. oftentimes, the defense was clueless on which formation to use against the offense and was out of position to stop the plays. the uh defensive players are not strong, big and fast enough to make up for being out of position.
jeezy33, i agree, the DL needs a very healthy rotation… fresh legs are the requirement to controlling the trenches. many games last year, out DL was getting ‘blown’ off the ball resulting in long or substantial gains off of a basic run going off tackle. if we can keep our DL healthy and in shape, they will hold their own….

I like the referenced defensive theory we plan to deploy, especially with the linebackers and defensive ends we have now and have projected to come in. Something was amiss last year. Lots of plays made behind line of scrimage but too many long plays given up due to all the gambling.
Gouveia is a candidate and will interview next week, but, no, he is just a candidate at the moment. Nothing more.

#18. I think you misread yesterdays posts. Didn’t see anyone bringing up the mainland v HI aspect in recruiting or hiring of coaches. There were several who pointed out that Chow seems to have an affinity for coaches and players who have ties to the State of Utah.
It’ll probably be at least a couple of weeks before an LB coach is hired.
No rush.
The key is going to be the two weekends this month when a bunch of recruits arrive.
If you’re a high school senior, you don’t remember when Bill Clinton was president.
Kids are impressed with how somebody coaches, not so much on history or birthplace.
I found it interesting that no word, publically, about the hiring process of the DC and LB coaches and, poof, puff the magic dragon appears and UH has a DC in Clune.
A lot of behind the doors meetings/discussions that we, the general public, was left out and I personally believe it was a good thing.
Like I mentioned yesterday, let the HC do his hiring and if it fails, then it’s his head that’s on the chopping block – and, for his sake, Clune better make him look good.

I would say, that kids nowadays, and I deal with a lot of gen-Xers, is that they have a fairly shallow recall of history. That said, a person like Kurt Gouviea, who had a really nice NFL career and bumboocha superbowl ring, will have a profound affect on potential players. They may not know the exact history, but they know he brings a portfolio of real experience that they can benefit from……

Being a great player doesn’t necessarily mean you will be a great coach. Anybody have any insights regarding KG in that regard? I don’t really know much about him in that respect.
Still think that Miano and Craig Stutzman were the best technical coaches I saw at UH. Will never forget Miano mentoring Richard Torres on backpedalling and when to turn the hips and go.
Oh, and of course, Cav, who was in a class of his own.

Thanks WMojo as I was going to ask the question “what kind of coaching experience does Kurt Gouveia have?” I know about him being snubbed by UH and ended up at BYU and his Professional career but don’t know anything about his coaching.
Watched most of the NC game on ESPNews’ Film Room and was really impressed with the way Sumlin, Addazzio and Chryst were able to diagnose plays and comment seemingly on the fly. The Full 22 view was terrific, too!
I’d love to have NFL Network do something like that for the playoffs.

Personally, I like the hire. A new fresh face and not a recycled coach (like Glanville).
Frim what Iʻve read, Clune had a lot of input with Utah State, in both game planning and scheme.
Letʻs face it, Aggies by far, had the best defense in MWC. Period!
I donʻt usually like calling people out, and I know heʻs a columnist, but I thought Reardonʻs take on Clune was classless and ignorant.
First Reardon questioned the integrity of the applicants. To me, thatʻs “yellow”, unless he actually talked to or asked the applicants.
And he dare bring up the cost of living approach (excuse), like people cannot live comfortably in Hawaii on $160K per year, get real Dave!
So Reardon didnʻt know who Clune was. That was obvious in how he mis-spelled his name cross twitter yesterday. However, a pardon is given by the Governor if the person applies or petitions the Governor for the pardon.
61. Noga’s only option is a pardon for ALL of his convictions. Generally speaking, a conviction cannot be expunged, and can only be done under extremely limited circumstances, none of which would apply to him. FYI: Noga might be better on the character front than Joey Porter, the NFL’s 2nd dirtiest player, who was arrested in December 2012 for writing a bad check. Porter may have already exhausted the tens of millions of dollars he earned while playing in the NFL.

I thought DR column was pretty fair.
However, I don’t think any fanatical football fan would know the name of position or OCs or DCs coaches except those of the teams he/she would cheer for.
Many fanatical fans wouldn’t even know the names of head coaches of teams other than those he/she would cheer for.
Does any one know the names of any of the coaches of North Dakota State, for instance? Or the names of any of the coaches (other than the head coach) of the University of Michigan?
If we got a position coach or a coordinator from, say, USC, it probably would be “splashy” not because of his name, but the school where he had coached.
Besides Kurt Gouveia, name a football player who 1) won a State football title; 2) won a NCAA football championship; and 3) won a Super Bowl game.
Is he the only one to accomplish this?

Thank you nuha. I’m with you. Dave wrote a cheap shot article. Was he expecting a DC from a BCS school even if money were not in the equation? It’s what happens in coaching cycles. Guys work hard, experience success and move on to better opportunities. I’m pretty sure Dave never heard of any of the other DC’s, except for probably Glanville, who were picked by previous coaches. And yet he never wrote a disrespectful article on any of them. But he chooses to jump on the negative bandwagon in the hope that he can increase readership. Pathetic.

S.at~ Sometimes, for the sake of the team, a very talented person may get away with some minor things that doesn’t bold well with his coach. Lack of talent on the 2nd team or far inferior depth, could bring down a team. If there are enough talent, then that motto should work.

I’m with Tommui and think that Dave Reardon wrote a fair article. Coach Clune was one of 39 applicants for the DC position. Yes he is an unknown name to me but comes from a winning program with a strong defense. We’ll get to see first hand what he can do for our Warriors this coming season.
Good luck to him and the future LB’er hire. Our young men need knowledge and guidance going into the season.
I’m taking a wild guess on the local candidate…Think it’s someone who had 3 current Warriors play for him.

One last thing re Reardon’s column. If it is HIS opinion that Clune will have a hard time relating to Hawaii kids and he stated that opinion, then I actually have no problems with it. As a columnist, he is paid for his insight and if his insight leads him to that conclusion, then so be it.

I honestly think Justin Vele should move back to the LB group. I think he would be a better run-stopper in short yardage situations than JGW, who thrives more in coverage & as a speedy pass rusher.

Good to see UH has made it’s choice on the new defensive coordinator and hopefully his teachings, schemes and experience will turn the Rainbow Warriors into a defensive force that will turn losing into winning and the “big green machine” is back on all phases for a successful season.
Will be in attendance for the Rainbow Warriors basketball team playing Northridge Matadors this coming Saturday. Special invite by the internet radio announcer Allan Zenmeister who is a good friend and stellar tennis player to our association at Anderson Park. Working on being his half time guest to discuss various topics on College Basketball, Hawaii Athletics and the work that I do in South Central Los Angeles at the Al Wooten Center. Enjoy interacting with the media as I still have spot apperances at times with local affiliates here in Los Angeles as I will be doing PSA announcements for Boys and Girls Club of Willowbrook Watts which we will becoming a charter member this new year.
Bows are off to a good start as winning on the road is the challenge but this season can be productive as Long Beach, Fullerton, Northridge, Riverside and Irvine are not as strong in years past so IF they can play tough for all four quarters and limited their turnovers then SKY is the limited for a BWC title and possible NCAA berth. I have watched Issac Fotu just progressed himself into a STRONG post presence for the bows. The “LION KING” is very skilled around the basket and has an excellent mid range game. My feelings are he is the KEY for the bows to establish interior presence inside and with his humilty and respect I feel he will become a STANDOUT for the bows in which we both share the same honor. His FRO is quite different from mines when I played but we both bring to the table heart and determination that made myself a fan favorite and of course he is hands down for that honor through out all the islands. Will definetly make it a point to meet him after the game and share camraderie and respect. Warrior Mojo, still have our picture together when we first met in New Orleans at our finest moment “The Sugar Bowl” kind sir !

Playing for UH will always be a moment of my athletic career that will have fond memories not so much playing against the competition but playing in front of the most endearing fans that ever support their intercollegiate athletic teams. Still today when I hear the chant of “lets go bows” it just FIRES me up to play with much more desire and hustle my “okole” on both ends of the playing field. I gather for me at 55 years of age that DESIRE will slow down but in all aspect kind sir it trends to what I do now playing on the tennis courts and accomplishing true professionalism as a proud GRADUATE student athlete from the University Of Hawaii.
My goal every year is to ALWAYS represent the 808 with dignity and respect. I am schedule next month to recruit h.s. students from Los Angeles for UH upper campus as last year I recruited over 600, this new year I want to reach a 1,000 to sign interest cards to attend Manoa as that kind sir is really the true and only way to give back to my Alma Mater sharing the ALOHA SPIRIT that you great folks gave to me during my playing days as a bow wayyyyy back from 1976-81.

I must say I also was “rubbed the wrong way” by Reardon’s article. I find the phenomenon of expressing one’s negativity with the foundation of an anonymous source off putting. That is, some sort of “inside information” with a negative slant that supports a negative perspective. I mean there is plenty to be negative about and if it is your opinion just say so. When the support for one’s negativity is anonymous it gives the sense of poorly developed cojones. Like I don’t have the courage to just man up and say what I mean and take responsibility for it.

3.8 seconds left and the clock should have started when the ball hit the rim but clodk man was a little slow. Poly scores with .2 seconds left to tie the game and wins it in overtime.

Surprised that UH WBB did not have a scheme to stop Cal Poly from getting that “purposefully” missed free throw by stacking the tallest players in the lane and brining up the guards to the top of the key or closer to the basket with only 3.2 seconds to play – a free throw would NOT have helped their cause – Beeman missed that situation
to Cal Polys credit, the forward in the “right” lane moved directly to the right and behind the UH player as she knew that the best shooter was going to miss and miss to the right and be in a position for the rebound – it worked, but she missed the put back
IMHO, I thought she fouled the UH player who was pushed and fell to the floor as she got the rebound – notice how many Cal Poly players moved to the “right” side of the basket as planned! 17 years as their HC paid off with a great strategy.
then, she missed and the Wahine BB players were just standing around while another Cal Poly player got the rebound and put up a short shot from the right lane line.

Not sure if it was asked and answered, but since the defensive coordinator position has been filled, how much will Coach Clune have in the selection process of the linebacker coach?
Reason I ask is that head coaches have delegated authority and left it up to the coordinators to assemble a team on their respective side of the ball with final approval coming from the head coach.

truegreen, After all these years, I didn’t know that. I thought once the ball hits the rim it was in play. On out of bounds, I know that someone has to touch it.

Interesting thought to move Yap to MLB…
Looks good on paper, Yap would be a monster LB, but the big issue is that Yap hasn’t played a down as a MLB in his college career (high school?). Physically, he would be ok, but he would have an extremely steep learning curve on MLB assignments, reads, and calling the adjustments/audibles.
As a DE, their primary duties are very basic… rush the passer and maintain gap responsibility vs the run. MLBs have to read the offensive formations, call adjustments, read the OLine post snap, maintain gap responsibility if run or drop to coverage if a pass (pickup man assignment or drop to zone).
I just have a hard time seeing Yap being able to successfully retreating to cover the middle zone after a play fake. Opposing teams could pick apart an inexperienced MLb Yap in coverage.
I have been in favor of Yap moving to rush end/OLB in the 3-4 and using Kennedy/Rasmussen/Samia as the down linemen. UH has options/combinations available with the 3-4 setup with Yap, Castro and the new recruits coming in for the rush end/OLB spot.
The issues UH had under TK’s 3 man fronts (when he used it) was that Yap and Woodard were both down linemen and they are nowhere big enough to bookend a 3 down look.

papajoe, yes the players can leave their blocks as soon as the ball is released and the shooter can enter the lane after the ball hits the rim but the clock doesn’t start until it’s touched.

Yep, big transition from DE to LB. Not to say that he can’t. He might have the football IQ to make that transition.

Being a basketball coach – or any other kind of coach – is beyond my pay-grade. I don’t have the game-time pressure on me.
That being said, I was wondering – and maybe you experts can tell me – with 3-seconds left, would a semi-full court press would be OK to delay them from bring the ball down the court a tad and then let them make an umncontested shot?
