Quite true about JJ.
JJ is a smart and intuitive guy. There was a point in 2004 when he became disillusioned with the UH job. UH had Chad Owens and Timmy Chang, and still was in the running for a postseason, when there were polls about whether JJ should go. And he probably would have bolted except he then hired Jerry Glanville. I think in 2005, despite going 5-7, JJ had the most fun. The way things were in 2007, with no soap in the showers and the limited resources, he felt he had to leave to stimulate a change. He did, and things did. Then the recession hit in 2008, and, oh, well …

Dreary and rainy in Temple Valley…Thunder and lightning going off. I guess it feels just like the current state of UH football…We do have a problem with Leadership at UH. A temporary UH President and alot of newbies who haven’t got a grasp of what needs to be done.
Bad weather…appreciate paradise!! Snow, sleet, ice, mush everywhere, frozen gusts, and a high of 28–Big Apple is no picnic during the winter.
What’s funny is that with the current coach, a person with Utah ties seems more likely to get a job than one with UH ties.
One of the best coaches I ever worked with was Mike Wilton.
When I first took over the men’s volleyball beat in 2001, Wilton says: You can write whatever you wish as long as you’re fair and give me a chance to give my side, too.
We had a great working relationship even though I had to write about players being dismissed or the team losing its national championship.
Of course, there was a shaky start. I remember I wanted to do a story on libero Vernon Podlewski So I asked Wilton if we could talk about his “libido.” Ooops. It sounded the same.

But Chow had not worked previously with Kaumeyer, Tuioti, Torres or Vanderbeek. He worked with Demo for only a year at NC State.

44– I do believe that UH and the role of at least its football program, are entering an inflection point, as to where we might be in the next 10 years. In short, many distinct, but tethered topics, now control the landscape and future of D1 football.
On one side are the nation’s largest universities, which face sharp declines in public funding. On the other, the cable and broadcast television networks, which are struggling to hold on to viewers and advertisers.
Given the ever-rising costs of Division I college athletics, which at their current growth rate will increase some $12 billion over the next 10 years, this alliance represents one of the largest bets in the history of both these businesses: a $25.5 billion wager that college football, a quirky, tradition-bound game that used to be a regional fixation, can continue to draw large national audiences and, in doing so, help both the schools and the networks survive.
At stake for cable networks is their ability to keep subscribers happy and to continue collecting billions in subscriber fees. For colleges, the challenge is to figure out how to keep the money from undermining the integrity of the sport—not to mention their academic mission.
“It’s a risky business, no doubt about it,” says Michael Martin, chancellor of the Colorado State University System. Mr. Martin warns that the desire for football success brings the temptation to make outsize investments in facilities and coaches, and to bend the rules to recruit the best players. The dangers aren’t just limited to sports, he says, “There are risks to the institution.”
Historically, only a fraction of college athletic departments support themselves. To break even, most rely on student fees and support from the school’s general fund. Of the 120 athletic departments in college football’s top division in 2011, only 19% reported a profit. The profitable schools generally have one thing in common: big-time football. Ohio State University’s football team, for instance, earns more than 70% of the revenue generated by all the school’s teams. (In most cases, those profits are spent solely on athletics, including others sports; very few schools divert football money to academics).
In recent years, however, the economic landscape for colleges has changed dramatically. The percentage of per-student funding that comes from state or local sources has fallen from 79.1% in 1980 to 56.7% in 2011, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers.
As schools scrambled to cover the shortfalls and felt increased pressure to make their athletic departments financially self-sufficient, the network television business was having its own crisis. Network ratings started to fall as viewers, many armed with DVRs, began recording scripted shows and watching them later, when they could blitz the commercials.
Roger Noll, a Stanford economics professor emeritus, predicted that not all conference networks would survive. “It’s obvious that intercollegiate sports are less popular in the rest of the country than they are in the Midwest and in the South,” he says.
But for schools in the bottom half of college football’s highest division, these payouts could spell doom. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says schools that fail to keep pace could ultimately be dropped to a lower level of competition with little hope for advancement. “The tension grows as the business models diverge,” he says.
Given Hawaii’s high cost of travel, smaller tax base, and a limited marker, we are bound to have a very serious and somber conversation in the next couple of years, if it has not already occurred.

What works in Richard’s favor is……are his obvious ties to the North Shore……that could affect relations……and recruiting efforts……maybe not so much this year…..but in future years…..especially for the Class of 2015……if Coach plans to still be around then.

Virginia Hinshaw comes to mind.
I guess Messrs. Apple, Jay, and Chow feel that experienced Offensive Coordinator and QB coach either aren’t needed, or they can’t access the resources to pay for them. Considering that we will be coming in with QB options with very limited game experience, experienced offensive coaching seems a high priority to me. For the sake of the Rainbow Warrior football players, coaches, and fans, I hope their decision is the right one. But if major leadership changes happen after the 2014 season, I will wonder Coach Chow really ever had the resources to succeed.

There are serious problems that await the state of football at UH, however serious problems are only navigated by having candid conversations, followed by prudent strategies with practical courses of action.

What seems apparent however is that she and the President seemed to be at (great) odds.

Sounds like you’re already making an excuse for if or when Chow fails next year. By next year mostly all of his recruits will be in place so it’s do or die for him, no excuses.

Where will Justin Vele fit into Chow’s scheme – FB or MLB? same for Benny Founa – both were “beasts” at MLB, but both have faded from view as time passes.

Friday evening, I had the great pleasure and honor of reacquainting myself with former UH President Fujio Masuda at a friend’s x-mas gathering. Still sharp at age 92!
One of the if not the longest serving President – 10 years before hanging it up. Subsequently, successors have not lasted more than 4 – 5 years at best and continuously surrounded by controversy!!!!!

The soap in the shower thing is kind of funny.. we were all up in arms about why oh why couldn’t they fix the dispensers, then the story broke out and in the same day later in the afternoon BAM! Maintenance were replacing them.
Later I was educated on the simple question no one seemed to ask. “Who were the ones that kept horsing around in the showers and breaking them over and over again?”
There are lines that need to be drawn between the responsibilities of maintenance AND those utilizing the facilities.
I’ve been lucky enough to see facilities for both men and women when they are not occupied.. TRUTH be told, some are kept neat, some looked like trash. Some coaches have their players under control and instill a feeling of pride in what facilities they do have and some are SLOBS.

Kenny’s son will be a senior in 2015, available as a 2016 recruit, and maybe make it family affair in Hawaii – all league LB in the Metro Washington area as a sophomore (2013) @ 6′ 2″ and 225#

if they lose, “what kine local boy dis” or worse yet, “dis guy not local he spent 2 days in iowa, he not local anymore.” in other words we disassociate with him.
i think maybe hawaii has the most fickle and strangest fan mentalities in all of collegiate sports…in general, but not all 🙂

BTW, I like his “local boy” style and cordially shaking Castro’s hand at Mandella’s funeral while the Republicans try to create a “stir”; and it was a “stir” as very few were interested
perhaps, that gesture will lead to a warming of relations between US and Cuba for our sake in the region and lead to warming with other South America leaders – build bridges and move forward; not continue or create new conflicts.

Sorry to hear about Ellerson. I think his ability as a head coach was limited to the type of players he was able to recruit.

Another QB is now available. Tyler Murphy, QB of Florida has said he is going to transfer to another school. He started 6 games for the Gators before he was injured and didn’t play thereafter. He’s a solid QB. He also has his degree and graduated so he can play immediately. He would be a sure starter for us if he decides to come here. Hey, why not!
Coach Demarest or Coach Jones who is recruiting Florida should get on it right away!

114.. That would be interesting… Not sure if the other big boy programs will want to spend a scholarship on a 1 year guy, so that might be UH’s chance. Timing would be in Murphy’s favor since UH’s QB situation is up for grabs and Murphy has significantly more talent and experience than the returnees have.
On second thought… Wisconsin recently brought in a 1 year post grad player at QB and that worked out pretty well for everybody.

120-Matty- I doubt that Brian is presently interested in the position. Baylor, went 11-1 and is going to its first BSC bowl game. Further, his present salary is in the mid 300s, and there are probably contract extensions and increases in the make, as we speak.
