Just looked at some late posts from last night. Some people get a bit carried away with wanting to bring back people with UH ties. Rich Ellerson? Really? Come on.

    ST . . .

I am swinging a medallion in front of your eyes. Watch it very closely. Keep watching it.

When I snap my fingers, you will answer my questions with honesty and detail. You will be unable to resist the urge to tell all that you know. Worry not of repercussions, as your reply will be between you and me (well, maybe a few others).

    Keep watching the medallion . . . swinging . . . swinging . . . SNAP!

What do you know about the coaching search? Who is UH looking at? Names, ST . . . I want names.

  16. Dan-O December 15, 2013 9:14 am

#7….even funnier is thinking that JJ wants back as HC, or Mack as DC.

    14. Many blasts from the pasts—so, it is curious to be so tethered to many of these “usual suspect” names.

That said, there are more than a few local guys out there, who quite possibly have the skill set, relevant experience, but moreover, might be in our specific price range: http://goviks.com/coaches.aspx?rc=186, or http://www.gohuskies.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30200&ATCLID=208062357, as a football operations director, or http://eiupanthers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=328 as potentially both a DC and DB coach.

  19. Warrior Dave December 15, 2013 9:24 am

    Dan-O,

Get ready to laugh your okole off when JJ comes back next year if Chow should flop. I know what ST said but I think fences can easily be mended since the UH Administration is gone.

Just looked at some late posts from last night. Some people get a bit carried away with wanting to bring back people with UH ties. Rich Ellerson? Really? Come on.

Just last night? Seems like a long-standing tradition. 😆

  24. Bowwar December 15, 2013 9:36 am

With all the uncertainty regarding the coaching staff, I’m wondering how much it will affect recruiting.

  25. Kevin December 15, 2013 9:36 am

RE: bringing up names from the past to coach now.

Desperation breeds fear and fear brings up desperation. Fear.. the most primal instinct there is.

  26. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2013 9:37 am

    Kevin-1
One prominent coach with Hawaii ties is out of the running. It’s strictly about money, which UH has little.

  27. Bowwar December 15, 2013 9:38 am

ST: Regarding the columnist who is at odds with UH football coaches, isn’t it the same one that didn’t get along with MAC too? It’s too bad when reporters can’t maintain their objectivity.

  28. Kevin December 15, 2013 9:38 am

    UH Administration gone?

    Names change.

    Just the names change.

Jones won’t be back and WE deserve to MOVE ON.

To say and imply only one human being can turn UH football around should be worrisome. Might as well hang it up and throw in the towel.

  29. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2013 9:41 am

    Bowwar:
I don’t think anyone has to go to practice to do his job.
I just wanted to give a background how a certain coach’s name always came up in discussions.
I think it’s a weird feud between two reasonably intelligent people.

  30. Bowwar December 15, 2013 9:41 am

ST: No problem asking for the sticker price…Like anything else, if its worth it, then you find a way to buy what you want and need.

  31. azwarrior22 December 15, 2013 9:42 am

Happy holidays, Roy. Does that come with 2 RT tickets on Hawaiian Air 🙂

  32. Kevin December 15, 2013 9:43 am

Maybe we can push for some kind of legislation that will allow players that exhausted their eligibilities to return too?????????

Oh man! Bess, Grice-Mullins, Brennan, Esera, Alama-Francis, Ilaoa, Purcell, imagine the possibilities!!!

    JUST BELIEVE!!!!

    😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

    ….. 🙄

  33. Bowwar December 15, 2013 9:43 am

ST: Okay, I’ll accept that idea about practices, but what bothers me is that it may be the same person who didn’t get along with MAC for some of the same reasons.

  34. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2013 9:45 am

    Kevin:
    Quite true about JJ.
JJ is a smart and intuitive guy. There was a point in 2004 when he became disillusioned with the UH job. UH had Chad Owens and Timmy Chang, and still was in the running for a postseason, when there were polls about whether JJ should go. And he probably would have bolted except he then hired Jerry Glanville. I think in 2005, despite going 5-7, JJ had the most fun. The way things were in 2007, with no soap in the showers and the limited resources, he felt he had to leave to stimulate a change. He did, and things did. Then the recession hit in 2008, and, oh, well …

  35. boolakanaka December 15, 2013 9:46 am

Aloha…opps, my previous comment was made in relation to the preoccupation of various UH retreads. If you did not click on the links I listed, the names are as follows: Ikaika Malloe, Ink Aleaga and Kim McCloud.

  36. Bowwar December 15, 2013 9:47 am

Dreary and rainy in Temple Valley…Thunder and lightning going off. I guess it feels just like the current state of UH football…We do have a problem with Leadership at UH. A temporary UH President and alot of newbies who haven’t got a grasp of what needs to be done.

  37. boolakanaka December 15, 2013 9:51 am

Bad weather…appreciate paradise!! Snow, sleet, ice, mush everywhere, frozen gusts, and a high of 28–Big Apple is no picnic during the winter.

  38. kev-1 December 15, 2013 9:52 am

What’s funny is that with the current coach, a person with Utah ties seems more likely to get a job than one with UH ties.

  39. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2013 9:53 am

One of the best coaches I ever worked with was Mike Wilton.
When I first took over the men’s volleyball beat in 2001, Wilton says: You can write whatever you wish as long as you’re fair and give me a chance to give my side, too.
We had a great working relationship even though I had to write about players being dismissed or the team losing its national championship.
Of course, there was a shaky start. I remember I wanted to do a story on libero Vernon Podlewski So I asked Wilton if we could talk about his “libido.” Ooops. It sounded the same.

  40. kev-1 December 15, 2013 9:54 am

    Bowwar . . . RE: Leadership problem

Don’t forget about all of the former employees that UH is still paying. That is a problem too.

  41. Stephen Tsai December 15, 2013 9:55 am

    Kev-1
Indeed, there are a lot of Utah ties.
But Chow had not worked previously with Kaumeyer, Tuioti, Torres or Vanderbeek. He worked with Demo for only a year at NC State.

  42. UHfan808 December 15, 2013 10:02 am

  44. Old School Dave December 15, 2013 10:07 am

UH needs a president who supports and understands the role of D-I athletics. Previous president viewed athletics as an irritant, IMHO.

  46. boolakanaka December 15, 2013 10:19 am

44– I do believe that UH and the role of at least its football program, are entering an inflection point, as to where we might be in the next 10 years. In short, many distinct, but tethered topics, now control the landscape and future of D1 football.

On one side are the nation’s largest universities, which face sharp declines in public funding. On the other, the cable and broadcast television networks, which are struggling to hold on to viewers and advertisers.

Given the ever-rising costs of Division I college athletics, which at their current growth rate will increase some $12 billion over the next 10 years, this alliance represents one of the largest bets in the history of both these businesses: a $25.5 billion wager that college football, a quirky, tradition-bound game that used to be a regional fixation, can continue to draw large national audiences and, in doing so, help both the schools and the networks survive.

At stake for cable networks is their ability to keep subscribers happy and to continue collecting billions in subscriber fees. For colleges, the challenge is to figure out how to keep the money from undermining the integrity of the sport—not to mention their academic mission.

“It’s a risky business, no doubt about it,” says Michael Martin, chancellor of the Colorado State University System. Mr. Martin warns that the desire for football success brings the temptation to make outsize investments in facilities and coaches, and to bend the rules to recruit the best players. The dangers aren’t just limited to sports, he says, “There are risks to the institution.”

Historically, only a fraction of college athletic departments support themselves. To break even, most rely on student fees and support from the school’s general fund. Of the 120 athletic departments in college football’s top division in 2011, only 19% reported a profit. The profitable schools generally have one thing in common: big-time football. Ohio State University’s football team, for instance, earns more than 70% of the revenue generated by all the school’s teams. (In most cases, those profits are spent solely on athletics, including others sports; very few schools divert football money to academics).

In recent years, however, the economic landscape for colleges has changed dramatically. The percentage of per-student funding that comes from state or local sources has fallen from 79.1% in 1980 to 56.7% in 2011, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers.

As schools scrambled to cover the shortfalls and felt increased pressure to make their athletic departments financially self-sufficient, the network television business was having its own crisis. Network ratings started to fall as viewers, many armed with DVRs, began recording scripted shows and watching them later, when they could blitz the commercials.

Roger Noll, a Stanford economics professor emeritus, predicted that not all conference networks would survive. “It’s obvious that intercollegiate sports are less popular in the rest of the country than they are in the Midwest and in the South,” he says.

But for schools in the bottom half of college football’s highest division, these payouts could spell doom. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says schools that fail to keep pace could ultimately be dropped to a lower level of competition with little hope for advancement. “The tension grows as the business models diverge,” he says.

Given Hawaii’s high cost of travel, smaller tax base, and a limited marker, we are bound to have a very serious and somber conversation in the next couple of years, if it has not already occurred.

    #41,

What works in Richard’s favor is……are his obvious ties to the North Shore……that could affect relations……and recruiting efforts……maybe not so much this year…..but in future years…..especially for the Class of 2015……if Coach plans to still be around then.

  49. el burro sabio December 15, 2013 10:41 am

    #49

    Virginia Hinshaw comes to mind.

  53. oneseason December 15, 2013 11:34 am

I guess Messrs. Apple, Jay, and Chow feel that experienced Offensive Coordinator and QB coach either aren’t needed, or they can’t access the resources to pay for them. Considering that we will be coming in with QB options with very limited game experience, experienced offensive coaching seems a high priority to me. For the sake of the Rainbow Warrior football players, coaches, and fans, I hope their decision is the right one. But if major leadership changes happen after the 2014 season, I will wonder Coach Chow really ever had the resources to succeed.

  54. whitey December 15, 2013 11:36 am

    Counselor Mui,

Yes, Hinshaw comes to mind as an example of someone who unfortunately could not keep the academic house in order. She was definitely a strong supporter of athletics.

  59. Kili December 15, 2013 11:57 am

#46- very well said and documented. Present day D1 football doesn’t seem sustainable.. more so for Hawaii with a insane geographic issue! Serious real discussion needs to happen soon…

  60. Boolakanaka December 15, 2013 12:08 pm

Gents and to the ladies in hiding, please don’t mistake my previous comment, as a being a Debbie Downer, Patti Pessimist exercise. There are serious problems that await the state of football at UH, however serious problems are only navigated by having candid conversations, followed by prudent strategies with practical courses of action.

  61. altigenip710 December 15, 2013 12:17 pm

    Happy holidays, Roy

  62. tom mui December 15, 2013 12:19 pm

#57 I don’t know that much about whether Dr. Hinshaw kept the “academic house in order”.

What seems apparent however is that she and the President seemed to be at (great) odds.

Perhaps that maybe an explanation as to her “housekeeping”. I really don’t know.

  63. Sofaking_blk December 15, 2013 12:43 pm

    #53
Sounds like you’re already making an excuse for if or when Chow fails next year. By next year mostly all of his recruits will be in place so it’s do or die for him, no excuses.

  64. Sofaking_blk December 15, 2013 12:52 pm

    #60
Something tells me that the “Powers that be” at UH could care less whether we have a football team or not.

  65. A-House December 15, 2013 1:03 pm

Where will Justin Vele fit into Chow’s scheme – FB or MLB? same for Benny Founa – both were “beasts” at MLB, but both have faded from view as time passes.

  66. kazumia December 15, 2013 1:06 pm

  67. A-House December 15, 2013 1:07 pm

Friday evening, I had the great pleasure and honor of reacquainting myself with former UH President Fujio Masuda at a friend’s x-mas gathering. Still sharp at age 92!

One of the if not the longest serving President – 10 years before hanging it up. Subsequently, successors have not lasted more than 4 – 5 years at best and continuously surrounded by controversy!!!!!

  68. Jack Flash December 15, 2013 1:07 pm

The heavy rain has finally abated in our valley – no breeze, but cold with a north wind coming in.

  70. A-House December 15, 2013 1:09 pm

Who has picked up the recruiting slack for Tuioti and Kaumeyer ( did he go out to recruit ? )

  71. boolakanaka December 15, 2013 1:10 pm

Just as a comparison, lets look at one the “average operating expense” for a football player on scholarship in 1AA:

Average Number of Athletes 100 98
Total Number of Athletes 12,273 84,169
Average Operating Expenses Per Player $4,283 $4,327
Average Operating Expenses Per Team $419,496 $472,187
Total Full Time Head Coaches 113 522
Total Part Time Head Coaches 10 336
Total Full Time Assistant Coaches 803 2,764
Total Part Time Assistant Coaches 344 4,436
    Average Total Revenue $2,584,427 $3,783,815
    Average Total Expenses $2,635,479 $2,498,701

Now, lets compare that with a player on scholly in D1:

Average Number of Athletes 115 98
Total Number of Athletes 13,602 84,169
Average Operating Expenses Per Player $21,169 $4,327
Average Operating Expenses Per Team $2,449,918 $472,187
Total Full Time Head Coaches 116 522
Total Part Time Head Coaches 2 336
Total Full Time Assistant Coaches 1,066 2,764
Total Part Time Assistant Coaches 150 4,436
    Average Total Revenue $21,825,758 $3,783,815
    Average Total Expenses $12,474,249 $2,498,701

In short, it about 5 X times the cost in a D1 program. These are all data touch-points that at some point will dictate some of these conversations…..

  72. A-House December 15, 2013 1:12 pm

Here’s my prediction for UH football in 2014 – 3 wins and 9 losses and new coaching staff for 2015.

and, this is based soley on how Chow will call the plays – up the middle, up the middle, up the middle.

  73. st. anthony trojan December 15, 2013 1:19 pm

i guess most think UH… belongs to the president….. n the profs… while some think it belongs to the students.. while others still yet believe it belongs to the sports boosters n so minded…while others with bigger egos.. still believe.. it is the politicians baby…so the “huki huki” goes on n on.. n all suffer a little from it…but at least WE all can give our side here…thanks ST n advertiser for this opportunity…seems there is a lot of “huki huki” also at the paper huh…he he he

ne way… getting close for santas visit soon.. so u’all have a Meke Kalkimaka there in Hawaii…. n where ever u posters hail from..

Congrats to the bb teams on their wins last night and today.

boola – #71 – can you label the columns, please?

  77. Kevin December 15, 2013 1:31 pm

The soap in the shower thing is kind of funny.. we were all up in arms about why oh why couldn’t they fix the dispensers, then the story broke out and in the same day later in the afternoon BAM! Maintenance were replacing them.

Later I was educated on the simple question no one seemed to ask. “Who were the ones that kept horsing around in the showers and breaking them over and over again?”

There are lines that need to be drawn between the responsibilities of maintenance AND those utilizing the facilities.

  78. Kevin December 15, 2013 1:34 pm

I’ve been lucky enough to see facilities for both men and women when they are not occupied.. TRUTH be told, some are kept neat, some looked like trash. Some coaches have their players under control and instill a feeling of pride in what facilities they do have and some are SLOBS.

  79. wafan December 15, 2013 2:01 pm

old fut fan base = bring back people from before

old fut fan base = a sports old boy network

old fut fan base = complain complain complain

old fut fan base = never mind everybody else, listen to me and me alone, i’m right

old fut fan base = put gold toilet seats at aloha stadium, ainokea about the money, that’s your problem, just give me

old fut fan base = we lost, this is tripping me out cause now my week is ruined

old fut fan base = eh, fire da guy, i no like what he trying fo build. i no need trump towers, KPT good enuff.

…which leads us back to old fut fan base = bring back people from before.

the “it’s good enough” attitude is what enables falling behind then complaining years down the road when others have leapfrogged you by decades.

    when we go to D2…
old fut fan base = i ges we should’ve supported the team no matter what, chow really was the last hope and we so blind to see that the horizon was really a cliff. spent so much time trying to throw chow off the cliff when shouldve been building a bridge of solutions instead of throwing chow off a cliff of complaints.

  94. A-House December 15, 2013 3:55 pm

sun is beginning to peek its rays into our valley, but it’s still chilly!!!!!!!!!!

it would be very interesting if Rich Ellerson becomes UH next DC and, when Ken Nuimatalolo retires, maybe a move to the UH staff? of course, Chow has to vacate the HC position

Kenny’s son will be a senior in 2015, available as a 2016 recruit, and maybe make it family affair in Hawaii – all league LB in the Metro Washington area as a sophomore (2013) @ 6′ 2″ and 225#

i hope, in time, all those old futts go away.

sun is shining, the weather is sweet…

  96. Moocher December 15, 2013 4:03 pm

    just one simple question….
what’s more important, winning or coaches with hawaii ties?

to me it seems, if a malihini can win, we make him a local
if he cannot win, then he’s not local.

it also seems if we bring in hawaii people, we happy cause they local or got ties.
if they win, yeah we got local boy does good attitude which make everyone feel proud.
if they lose, “what kine local boy dis” or worse yet, “dis guy not local he spent 2 days in iowa, he not local anymore.” in other words we disassociate with him.

i think maybe hawaii has the most fickle and strangest fan mentalities in all of collegiate sports…in general, but not all 🙂

  97. A-House December 15, 2013 4:04 pm

if Chow completes his 5 year contract – he will be 72 years and probably headed to retirement

now, that’s not saying he is to old, but it certainly takes it toll on any HC at any level – hell, just look at what being US President can do to the color of your hair!! BTW, I like his “local boy” style and cordially shaking Castro’s hand at Mandella’s funeral while the Republicans try to create a “stir”; and it was a “stir” as very few were interested

perhaps, that gesture will lead to a warming of relations between US and Cuba for our sake in the region and lead to warming with other South America leaders – build bridges and move forward; not continue or create new conflicts.

  98. A-House December 15, 2013 4:06 pm

    are we at 100?

  99. A-House December 15, 2013 4:07 pm

blog is slowing down again!!!!!!!! took over 7 seconds for my comment to be posted.

  100. boolakanaka December 15, 2013 4:14 pm

Hooowee..did anyone just catch the Bengals punter, get taken into another lifetime by 57 on the Steelers, on the run-back. Braddha just got clocked big-time—koo-koo.

  101. Moocher December 15, 2013 4:14 pm

i think we got a good AD, i think we got a good coach, the clock has been ticking rather quickly on both. i think both will find a way to slow down the clock and get ahead of it in 2014

As far as I know, there is no award for Best blog comment of the day. But if there was I would nominate these…a little scary, but I see the cliff and the writing on the wall…mainly written by Chancellor Apple 🙁

    when we go to D2…
old fut fan base = i ges we should’ve supported the team no matter what, chow really was the last hope and we so blind to see that the horizon was really a cliff. spent so much time trying to throw chow off the cliff when shouldve been building a bridge of solutions instead of throwing chow off a cliff of complaints.

  105. Shoko December 15, 2013 5:17 pm

Hmm, Apple still up to his scare tactics I see.

Moocher. Uncle norm sends his mahalos for your sticking up for him. He said he will send you an extra box of rice cakes this Xmas because you have been a good boy in sticking up for him. He said tell you, tanks ah!!!

  108. Shoko December 15, 2013 5:22 pm

Sorry to hear about Ellerson. I think his ability as a head coach was limited to the type of players he was able to recruit.

  109. WWF December 15, 2013 5:46 pm

    91.

One day down the road, you too shall be an old fut fan. Hopefully older, but wiser?

  110. Shoko December 15, 2013 5:57 pm

As volatile as life is, we can only hope to reach that age. I don’t know if I’ll be wiser as I age but it sure beats dying stupid.

Another QB is now available. Tyler Murphy, QB of Florida has said he is going to transfer to another school. He started 6 games for the Gators before he was injured and didn’t play thereafter. He’s a solid QB. He also has his degree and graduated so he can play immediately. He would be a sure starter for us if he decides to come here. Hey, why not!

Coach Demarest or Coach Jones who is recruiting Florida should get on it right away!

Anybody have Jamaal Charles on their fantasy FB team?

I didn’t, but my opponent in my FFB playoff did.

    Happy holidays, Tsaikos!

  116. Former UH Athlete December 15, 2013 8:07 pm

114.. That would be interesting… Not sure if the other big boy programs will want to spend a scholarship on a 1 year guy, so that might be UH’s chance. Timing would be in Murphy’s favor since UH’s QB situation is up for grabs and Murphy has significantly more talent and experience than the returnees have.

On second thought… Wisconsin recently brought in a 1 year post grad player at QB and that worked out pretty well for everybody.

  117. MattyBoy December 15, 2013 9:47 pm

Hoping we get a good DC.

  118. MattyBoy December 15, 2013 9:49 pm

    ST,

Any word if Norwood applied for one of the vacant Assistant positions?

  119. kev-1 December 15, 2013 10:08 pm

ST aint saying. I tried to hypnotize him earlier, but he didn’t bite.

My theory on president’s hair going gray is probably because most presidents are elected at the time that they are about to go gray anyway.
Are these guys old futs? What’s the qualifying age? 🙂

  123. wafan December 16, 2013 2:28 am

    Good morning!

  124. boolakanaka December 16, 2013 4:48 am

120-Matty- I doubt that Brian is presently interested in the position. Baylor, went 11-1 and is going to its first BSC bowl game. Further, his present salary is in the mid 300s, and there are probably contract extensions and increases in the make, as we speak.

  125. NYUHTx December 16, 2013 5:32 am
