Healthy returns

The Rainbow Warriors are optimistic that three ailing players — center Ben Clarke, defensive tackle Saui Matagiese and slotback/punter/punt returner Scott Harding — will be available to play against at San Diego State. And if they’re available, they’re starting.

Kody Afusia moved from left guard to provide the snaps at center this week. Clarke, who had knee issues, is expected to make his 22nd consecutive start, the longest active streak among the Warriors.

Even if Matagiese can’t go the distance, Marcus Malepeai will have extended time, mostly in place of injured nose tackle Moses Samia. Malepeai weighs 290, a 40-pound gain since the end of the 2012 season.

The retro look will not be limited to the players. The coaches and staff also will be provided with kelly-green shirts.

There was a guarded vibe around the athletic department complex yesterday. That’s because it was the NCAA’s annual random drug testing. This time, the emphasis was on performance-enhancing drugs. The NCAA pays for the tests, sparing UH from additional expenditures.

Did UH ever pick an official shade of green? Is it Kelly green? Is it Forest green?

What is the truegreen? yuk, yuk…

San Diego State is a really good team and it will take a darn near perfect game for Hawaii to win or for SDSU to make many miscues and turnovers. Glad to hear Scott Harding is back, he is the MVP of the team and we saw what happen to the special teams punting after he was out. Even with Harding, Clarke and Saui playing, it’s most likely not going to be enough to topple SDSU. The 3rd quarter flatness and spankings that UH takes every game is to much to make up for in the 4th quarter.

    SDSU 56

Interesting read. Former Ohio State Assistant AD now at FAU is trying to lure OSU’s DC as their new head coach. Problem is that he would earn about $100,000 less as FAU’s HC compared to what he currently earns at OSU, but that could change.

THIS IS DA WEEK! ……and Happy Aloha Friday from Paradise.

  10. Old School Dave November 15, 2013 9:59 am

I could never understand why a school like SDSU, with such a rich talent pool in their backyard at the high school and JUCO ranks, could never move into the higher echelon of college football, like say, Utah. I read somewhere that the Pac-12 would never consider a Cal State University for membership.

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Prayers for full recovery for all the wounded Warriors. Hope those guys are ready to go! Can’t wait to see the the throwback unis. Also anxious to see how Joey Iosefa does this week.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  15. Shoko November 15, 2013 10:46 am

Although their record shows winless, I believe this group of young men are not an 0-9 team. A win is imminent and if I was an Aztecs fan, I would be extremely worried.

It’s time for the Warriors to grind out a win!

  19. Boolakanaka November 15, 2013 12:03 pm

10–Old School Dave, there are a host of reasons, outside of athletic competitiveness, that also factor into these decisions. One of the primary reasons is the profound difference in didactic philosophy. In short, the UC system and CSU system are at opposite sides of the intersection as applied to their educational paradigms.

The UC system has a theoretical based education system, while the applied education is the backbone of the CSU system. They give two different options to students and lets them decide which is most appropriate for their higher educational goals.

The Pac-12’s by and large, is composed of large research based schools, and thus a school like SDSU would be an unlikely fit for PAC12 membership.

  22. SteveM November 15, 2013 12:20 pm

    Good morning everyone!

Looking at the rainbow UH logo this morning in the S-A hardcopy (even read the article-which I usually skip) brought back memories of my UH days from 1967. I remember seeing only a few rainbow logos on apparel–and not much apparel, period. You could only find them at the UH book store too (I think).

No t-shirts as I recall. I was in my t-shirt wearing days and tie-die and Crazy Shirts were big. Fast forward to today. Fast forward to today– Rainbow Boutique stores and t-shirts even in super markets. H logo slippahs even.

An industry and market had built up around the UH sport logos. Retro gear could sell… at least people like me would buy them for nostalgia… and if UH had a retro night or two in all sports…

I hope UHAD can keep a higher percentage for licensing the UH rainbow logo.

you must have heard that from veneri…he was real sure scott’s injury was either an ankle or the knee, even after the press box (@dave_reardon) was informed it was the hammie.

  24. crusaderlover November 15, 2013 12:36 pm

the players, coach Chow, the state of Hawaii needs this win. lets support the players and coaches. lets not look ahead at what happens after this season.
    lets be one tomorrow.

  25. Former UH Athlete November 15, 2013 1:20 pm

Huh??? The NCAA actually testing for PEDs? How did Hawaii get so lucky?

Spread only UH (+4.5)… line has been moving down so that’s a bit interesting. I said earlier this year SDSU has dropped off the map from the previous few years. They have picked it up in MW play, but they have been just squeaking by the MW bottom feeders (New Mexico, Nevada, Air Force). They had a good effort vs Fresno, but I watched that game and Fresno played a horrible game to keep SDSU in it.

I’m going to take the over 59.5

Haven’t been to the books in a while, so here’s this week’s kinda maybe winners

    Over 59.5 Hawaii vs SDSU
    UCLA (-3) vs Washington
    Over 57 Houston vs Louisville
    Utah (+28) vs Oregon
    Over 66 SJSU vs Nevada

    Over 45.5 Chargers vs Dolphins
    Jets (-1) at Bills
    Under 50 Chiefs vs Broncos

  26. Kekoa November 15, 2013 1:33 pm

Let’s get this party STARTED!… Enuff of this ‘Lolly Dolly Oh My Golly’ play out dere. Execute with consistency and BLAST on every down!

    C’mon Warriors…you can do this!

  27. Slugger November 15, 2013 1:50 pm

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

I even get to watch them on TV tomorrow. Hurrah! It’s going to be cold here. Good day to stay inside & enjoy the games. Maybe snow tonight; we got some cold rain now.

    JaM,

My sis isn’t going to the game. Access to bathrooms is a problem when you can’t see where you are going. She’s going to listen to the game & cheer them on at home.

    Let’s Go BOWS!!!

  28. My take November 15, 2013 1:55 pm

I wish the retro uni’s went all the way and had the floppy sleeves n the cut jerseys for the backs n receivers. That was a cool look with the exposed back plate flapping as the made there moves. Should have put the menehune runningback with the rainbow wave instead of the UH rainbow emblem. Totally ugly and I imaginative. And where is Marshmellow Head Mascot? We need something to throw things at just like the old days.

  29. Don Weir November 15, 2013 2:00 pm

    Retro?
I have Coach Price’s green nylon warm up jacket from the 1973 season.
Please don’t let him know who took it after the season wound up.

  30. SailorBlue November 15, 2013 2:32 pm

Aloha everybody ~ just a reminder that we are at Rainbow Bay Marina Cabana A again tomorrow for the tailgater. Early crew should be there around 9 and have the grill in operation by 10-10:30. Since the game is a little earlier at 5:30 we’ll be starting the clean-up around 3-3:30. Cheers and hope to see everybody there. SB.

  31. JaM November 15, 2013 2:46 pm

Slugger-tell sis i can hangout with them and lend a hand for those moments. I basically sit by myself through the game anyways and it would not be a problem at all.

  32. Former UH Athlete November 15, 2013 3:19 pm

    32. I think the game will be close. SDSU has been real shaky this year and have been just barely skating by the other Mtn West bottom feeders. They had a lot of turnover this year and the new guys aren’t nearly as good as the guys they replaced.

As long as UH doesn’t have their usual 20 min spurt of completely forgetting how to play football, they have a shot.

  33. tommui November 15, 2013 3:35 pm

Well, I have that orange tee-shirt that I won in a contest on TWB and an old aloha shirt with the UH Rainbow on the left sleeve.

I’ll wear it tomorrow cheering on the Bows!

  34. A-House November 15, 2013 3:43 pm

    #33:

at least SDSU beat the “MWC bottom feeders” were as UH has lost to all

Although hopeful they will win at least 1 game and not go 0 – 12; only good thing about that is winning a lot next year may contend for the “biggest turn around” in NCAA history (again).

  35. wafan November 15, 2013 3:50 pm

    Good afternoon!

“Good” is debatable. At least it is the afternoon . . .

    Thankfully.

  36. Numba 1 Son November 15, 2013 4:01 pm

If they play anywhere near the way they played last game-especially regarding the run game-this is a guarenteed win for UH.

wrong. they goin put up 40+ on army.

  38. My take November 15, 2013 5:30 pm

PED testing is a waste of time. The team probably got the heads up a few days ago and, the PED’s used today dissipates quickly. Thanks Cream n Clear!

  39. Slugger November 15, 2013 6:27 pm

    JaM,

My sister feels more comfortable at home. But she’ll be cheering. Hopefully her hubby can find a boat neck women’s Rainbow Warriors t-shirt for her. It’s neat to know she’s a real fan even though she can’t see them play.

I’m watching MBB NAU play USC on TV. It’ll be fun to see how NAU matches up with UH in Dec.

  40. Wes'side Warrior November 15, 2013 6:52 pm

    Howzit, Gang!

Busy day, and finally got home to order my tickets for tomorrow’s game. Gonna take three of my youngest girls this time. Will take the boys on the final home game. Looking forward to my first UH football home game in eons!!! Can’t wait! Got things to take care of earlier tomorrow, so don’t know what time I’ll get to the stadium. Hope to run into some of you, at least.

    Go, Warriorz!!!

  41. Slugger November 15, 2013 8:12 pm

Dang! NAU coulda beat USC. They were ahead at the half by 10, then slowed down in the 2nd half. USC won by 4. I think UH can win their match at NAU.

    Night!

  42. Slugger November 15, 2013 8:12 pm

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  43. Kekoa November 15, 2013 8:15 pm

WW ~ Make time to swoop by the Tgate (the invite is extended to all bloggers on the WB). There’s always some folks at the Cabana after the game to express their opinions of the game, so take your pick.

  44. Wes'side Warrior November 15, 2013 8:22 pm

Okay, Kekoa. I’ll change up the morning’s arrangements and we’ll leave early to get there. Can someone please email or facebook message me the t-gate info? Mahalo!

  45. hon225 November 15, 2013 8:58 pm

Once again, Warriors face a uphill climb, poor coaching by Chow and co. will lead to our downfall, but the players soldier on despite Chow and man of no use Ben Hay..Jay

  46. Leahi2 November 15, 2013 9:29 pm

I saw the pictures of the Rainbow warrior uniforms. I just wished the rainbow patch on the shoulders was like the ones they had back in the early sixties. The rainbow went sideways from the neck to the edge of the shoulders. Yes, it was across the whole shoulders. Also, I don’t care for the “UofH” patch on the front of the pants. They used to have that patch on the side of white helmets during Tomey’s coaching days. In my opinion that was ugly. Now it would be nice to have Gold colored helmets with the “H” Logo. It would speak of the proverbial gold pot at the end of Hawaii’s rainbow. I like this idea. But wait a minute! White pants on green shirts? No. Better Black Pants at home.

I’m expressing my own opinion and who knows what most other bloggers would say. Speak up folks!

  47. nanakuli November 15, 2013 9:29 pm

NEW UNIFORMS!!! Norm Chow must coach the SDSU game with nothing to lose and a “go for broke attitude”. The Rainbow Warriors can do it with trick plays and a blitzing defense.

  48. Derek November 15, 2013 9:41 pm

Larry Tuileta could start for the Rainbow Warriors next year.

  49. kev-1 November 15, 2013 10:18 pm

Larry Tuileta does not have the arm to be a D1 QB. Sorry. He throws with way too much effort and his passes are awkward and slow. Sorry again. I think he is a phenomenal athlete that I am stoked will be a Warrior, but I just don’t buy the QB hype.

  50. My take November 15, 2013 11:00 pm

Which brings the question, what position is Tui going to play? I predict the samo samo football game tomorrow. UH will fall behind early. Fall back even more later, then rally only to fall short by a score or 2. Along w bonehead mental errors and losing the turnover battle. Oh well, maybe the rainbow uni’s will inspire something to happen

OH is possible, but his vertical is under 30″

  54. Former UH Athlete November 16, 2013 7:00 am

Tui is going to be an all-American… outside hitter.

Agree with Kev-1, Tui’s arm isn’t quite good enough for D1. His highlight video looks good but most throws are arching and to wide open targets. He doesn’t show any zip on the ball.

I just wish the people putting these highlights together would include some tight window throws and some out routes to showcase arm strength, anticipation and accuracy. Only showing the QB hitting wide open receivers for TDs tells you nothing about the QB because all QBs can hit wide open targets. If I were a coach recruiting a QB, I’d rather see plays where the QB perfectly places a ball vs good coverage on intermediate routes than hitting a wide open seam routes.

  55. Shoko November 16, 2013 7:33 am

Won’t be able to catch this game in real time like I have been doing so far this season since I have other plans. However, will DVR the game and watch it later tonight.

I missed three games last year (Lamar, UNLV and South Alabama) all of which, as you all know, were wins. So, hopefully, this little change in pattern will lock in the first win of the season. 😉

    Go Warriors!
