Gameday: Saint Mary's
Turnaround time comes at a premium for Hawaii today. The Rainbow Warriors had only about 20 hours to get over their 62-61 loss to Boise State in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic first round on Sunday night, and be ready for today’s 6 p.m. (7 p.m. in reality) game against Saint Mary’s in the consolation semifinals.
You can bet the Gaels (9-1), featuring assistant coach Eran Ganot, will come out motivated after dropping a game they should have won against South Carolina.
UH’s depth took a blow early against the Broncos when freshman wing Aaron Valdes hyperextended an elbow almost immediately after checking in during the first half. He did not return. Valdes was to get an MRI today, UH assistant coach Benjy Taylor said.
Valdes had seen his role reduced in recent games but UH coach Gib Arnold spoke before the tournament about an expanded role for several of his bench players, including Valdes, to keep his rotation fresh as well as build confidence going into Big West Conference play. UH is hoping it’s just a bruise of some sort.
The ‘Bows will look for a bounce-back game from forward Christian Standhardinger (3-for-9 shooting vs. BSU). He and Isaac Fotu will have their hands full against Gaels big man Brad Waldow, SMC’s leading scorer and rebounder.
If UH wins, it’s into the consolation championship (fifth-place game) vs. Oregon State. If the ‘Bows lose, it’ll be their first appearance in the DHC seventh-place game, vs. George Mason. Regardless, it will be an 11 a.m. game on Christmas Day on ESPNU.
Another loss. The point holds on to the ball too long. The shooter can’t free up, which make me wonder what happened to the skip pass. And perhaps most striking is the Bow’s leading scorer is MIA for the 2nd time this year. Seems like the Bows get all of his game or not at all. The coaches should make it apparent that there’s more to the game than just scoring. Oh well hope for better times.

I agree with oldtimer808 that Buds4life doesn’t know what he’s talking about. As far as I know, Hawaii beat St. Mary’s tonight. I could swear that Hawaii beat St. Mary’s when I left SSC tonite and came home to read Buds4life idiot comment. Oh, well, ……….
Hmmm, I think his comment refers to the lost against Boise St last night. The time stamp was just before tipoff.
Men’s basketball under gib arnold has shown improvement every year. better players, better product on the court, and a nice win over a quality mid major team. maybe buds4life needs to quit smoking buds and reevaluate his life.

K-Bay, yes Gib and UH MBB program appear to be headed upwards. towards, hopefully a Gonzaga, Butler, St Mary’s level, and in the future years, maybe even higher.

With Isaac Fleming 6’4″ 200 combo guard, Stefan Jankovich 6’11” hybrid 4/5, and Negus Webster-Chan 6’7″ 200+ (and getting bigger, stronger), all 3 star recruits out of HS, the recruiting is getting better. UH is an exciting team to watch.
