DT’s status uncertain
The Rainbow Warriors should have a better understanding today about defensive tackle Saui Matagiese’s knee injury. It was feared that he suffered ligament damage.
He will undergo an MRI in Salt Lake City. He is expected to stay with the team the remainder of this 10-day trip. If he is unavailable to play against Navy, freshman Kennedy Tulimasealii will be promoted to his spot.
Matagiese is one of the undisputed leaders of the team. His story — a Kauai native who relinquished a scholarship from Portland State to walk on at UH — is inspiring to those with college-football dreams.

I’ve been a SS fan but its time to prep for next year. Also I’m worried about his health. He took a beating yesterday.
Losing is one thing, blowouts is another. Time to gather the search committee. Hopefully they can prevent the emotional pick and hire a coach who has his (stuff) together.

i’m getting the impression chow is starting to chirp a bit. meaning on the last inside access he made reference to salaries and the coaches. in yesterday’s interview he talked about Utah st. and the “commitment” they made to the facilities and football…cant help to think that was a shot at UH.

He knew the task at hand when he took the job… the culture, the obstacles, etc. Can’t use it as an excuse when others before him have had success. He wants more, then he has to work for it… find those new mega-donors, etc., etc.
Good morning Tsaiko Nation, hope the young DT Saui Matagiese knee injury over the course of time heals for him so he may be able to return playing the sport he loves and for the Rainbow Warriors. Knee injuries are tough as I had tendinitis in both my knees during my last 2 seasons which really took away from playing my “all out effort game” as playing in pain is no joke, very disheartening when you know you can play so much better as injuries just plain old SUCKS !
As for 0-8 not much more to say as it is a very TRYING season for the team, coaches and especially LOYAL fans here who are just disappointed to the results of what we see today and just an AWFUL thought with 4 games remaining it could be 0-12 which I really hope and PRAY will not happen.
LOSING good folks as I KNOW can be a dark hole in which you as a competitive athlete can give your ALL to try every effort to stop it but when faith is lost and confidence in your leaders who are PUBLICLY maligned and questioned on their abilities then what takes place is what you have now anger, disappointment and excuses as certainly nothing like this was ever expected at the beginning of this football season. With the comments Norm Chow has made recently it seems he is frustrated and disappointed more then any one else on the results and soul searching for him on whether or not to continue I know can be heavy on the mind as he certainly has his PRIDE as we all know on his legendary status as a Coaching Offensive Guru at winning football programs.
With four games left and really just looking for ONE game to come off the lost column I am still going to be there for them and CHEER them on as I know each player and coaches do not want the utter thought of an 0-12 season so good folks of Tsaiko Nation let’s strap up our shoe laces and tie them real tight it’s down to the wire for our BELOVED team and WE have to do the only thing for them “LET’S GO BOWS” as fan support is needed BADLY and you GREAT folks of Tsaiko Nation are just that “loyal and true fans to the “H”!

The repetitive list of excuses by Norm Chow followed by the “we aren’t making excuses” is reflective of the repetitive loses. Time for a new script and perhaps a new coach.
This morning ‘And so it goes story’ had it wrong: “The Rainbow Warriors had no answers in Utah State’s 47-10 smackdown…” That ‘politically correct’ statement should have read: “Coach Norm Chow had no answers in Utah State’s 47-10 smackdown…” As stated, that sentence reads as if the players are at fault. They certainly are not. They show up – everyday – even with the inevitable loss they will face. Talk about manning-up. Then watch Chow’s predictable and tired cliche excuses on the news this weekend, next weekend, the weekend after that… It’s just like his coaching. Tired and predictable. The CBS commentators had it correct yesterday during the game when they said: “Their plays are so predictable. They need new schemes”.
At this point, I really have nothing to say about the game or the football program in general. I’m pretty much beyond frustration and disappointment. I thought I’d be upset about the coaching or play but I’m just like “whatevers” already.
My hope is that we get through this season as quickly as possible, avoid any more injuries, and for the coaches to prepare to address the mounting issues at all levels during the off-season.

I will support any Hawaii’s team, win or lose. We might question the abilities of the coaches to lead but should never question the heart and soul who go out on the field to play.
To encourage our opponents to beat us is not a Hawaii fan.
And since I am on the soap box, POLYMOM is a huge supporter of Hawaii’s football team, emotionally and financially. She and her family were at the Marriott where the football team was stranded because of the LAX shooting up to the point where the team departed on their flight to Utah. She acted as a cheerleader giving emotional support to the team and even offered to pay for the team’s meal there (thank God she did not – might be violation of the NCAA rules). The point being that she cheered the team on and gives financial support to the team.
Wish people like LAVA would do the same. This Blog is for supporters of the Rainbow Warriors – we don’t have to drink kool-aid but we don’t have to wish them ill.
With Ben Jay saying that he and Norm Chow are breaking the “bamboo ceiling” I wonder if Chow and Jay will try to re-frame the losses as evidence of latent discrimination in the system rather than a reflection on Chow’s abilities: i.e., discriminatory-based lack of support from UH and donors are the “real” reason for the failures.
I think this past game has done it for me. I hope Coach retires at the end of the season. He will still be a great coach in my eyes and someone from Hawaii who I am proud of. Just, UH football needs a corporate turnaround, and that only happens with new leadership with a mandate to make changes (can’t just be new assistant coaches). Granted, I was really rooting for a change in fortunes, but UH doesn’t have the luxury of a big PAC 12 tv deal, cash flow that insulates the program through down cycles in demand, so we need to really be able to adapt quickly when we go off course financially. We have a great fan base and tradition, but we can’t perpetually draw down on reserves. In the NFL, things like a new stadium tends to increase revenues up to 50%. A cheaper move like a new coaching direction, should give our revenue a nice bump. I’m worried about turnover both in staff and players, too much is no good. A period of stability helps rebuild programs, which is why we can’t waste another year. Kind of contradicting myself, I do believe though a gamer at QB (Tuileta, Zwehlan) if they produce, would make any coach look good. Anyhow, personally, I’m seeing clear lines now between my emotional attachment and what we got to do. Always Go Warriors!
I hope Chow has the tape of Hawaii stopping Navy with Coach Aranda’s defense.
Tom Mui – Careful, you make it sound like Polymom may have been unwittingly committing NCAA infractions since her son started playing for UH. That would be the icing on the cake for this program.
Chow has now made comments to at least two outlets in recent days (CBS Sports — referenced during the 4th Q of the game broadcast and the Desert News) indicating he’s questioning whether he’s cut out to be head coach.
If he has doubt about his fire and passion for coaching, he needs to step down for the sake of the players. It must be very discouraging to read comments like Chow’s when you’re giving your all on the field.
I have to say that USU looks like a different team from a physical standpoint compared to when UH last played them in 2011. Their players are faster, quicker, more athletic, and more physical. Many people commented on how much the facilities have improved at USU since UH last played there in 2010. Bottom line is the commitment and support a university has to its football program. Of course a lot of this is driven by the fact that Utah and BYU have made upgrades to their facilities. Keep in mind that USU is a state university.
Tough news about Matagiese… He’s been one of the better players on defense this year. One of the few who have been consistent game in, game out.
Consistency has been the defenses’s bugaboo this year… They make good plays, then seemingly on many 3rd downs, somebody forgets or messes up their assignment in coverage and allow a WR to run wide open. It’s either somebody just gets burned in man or there’s a miscommunication in zone (when WRs go from one zone to another).
I checked the defensive stats and UH created 12 tackles for loss. That’s a fantastic number, in fact, Hawaii is #2 in the nation for TFL. Crazy because Missouri, the best DLine in the nation, is averaging 1.7 fewer TFL. I know the defense is on the field way too long, but they are making plays. They just aren’t consistently making plays.
But they seem to follow a good play with a bad one and give up what they gain. Whether it’s a penalty or a defensive breakdown. UH has been exceptionally poor at defending 3rd and long this year. Those are the killers that leads to the lopsided TOP each week. What should be a fairly easy stop and punt turns into a drive extender and the opponent runs more plays and clock. Mentally it’s gotta be demoralizing to the let the opponent off the hook and it seems like the defense has a letdown after allowing a 3rd and long to be converted.
That’s been the status quo for the year….

Healing energy to Kuuliko Carvalho & Saui Matagiese. Things like this reminds me that this game is played by young men and is a high risk sport. To have to hear and read the negative comments about our kids really kills me. He should have, nail that guy, take his head off, tackle that guy etc. I don’t think the boys purposely try to lose a game. Each week I see great effort but…the wins will come.
I hope I don’t hear coach saying…”we got to get better at that”…”we should have..”….”we need to address”….on Inside Access program. I’d like to hear what they plan to do to address all the “we should have…we need to….we got to” I hope the Big Kahuna put the questions to coach and get answers or plans on “how to” or “this is how we will”.
The Big Kahuna has got to stop leading the coach into a “soft” reply. If it really is Inside Access then please have the viewing audience get a real inside view.

I was a believer in chow but after hearing the cbs guys say chow told them he’s not sure if this Head Coaching gig is for him then complain about travel and all this what not. I get it though but Chow needs to realize the schemes on offense and defense need to be looked at because i think the last like 5 games we gave up 500+ yards on defense and offensive play calling is predictable and we are not consistent because we have no sense of identity he wants the run to set up the pass but you have proven you cant do that yet he still believes he can. I’ll keep cheering but its getting harder when you hear the head coach is doubting himself.

I’m glad chow has ran some trick plays and what not but Chow needs to realize he NEEDS A COORDINATOR on offense he cant do both.
Chow is a good coach but will need to surround himself with great coaches, let them coach and then make the final decisions on what they will do…imho
one game I saw a head coach get into it with his assistant coach on the bad use of the clock and time out. Dude was red in the face screaming at the assistant….that’s holding people accountable.

I was reading a book about American Prisoners of War and how they survived when they should have died. The interesting point made by the survivors was that the prisoners who started feeling sorry for themselves and lost the will to live were usually first ones to die. The prisoners who somehow maintained their will to live, often due to their hatred of their captors, survived. Of course I’m not trying to draw a parallel between war and college football, but the lessons are worth noting as far as dealing with adversity and hardships.
Need to believe tomorrow is better, need to believe in your team, need to believe you better than the results, need to believe we will win.

Regarding the tackles for loss (TFL) stats, keep in mind that TFL is a indicator of undisciplined play when viewed with an eye on total yards allowed. If the latter is low, reasonable chances are being taken, if not, it it likely the Defensive Coordinator is gambling a lot, and/or the players are not “staying home” on their assignments (e.g., not losing outside contain, etc) and getting too far up field. Its a high risk/reward scenario which describes the UH defense.
It’s nice to see that Salas is having a good day for the JETS.

0-8 is on Chow and staff. As a coach you are who your record says you are. The players deserve better leadship. The staff was got to regroup. Chow should hold a no holds barred staff meeting where everyone can freely express themselves. In my view one of Chow’s weak points as a leader is not holding the people below him accountable for their performance. He doesn’t get on coaches for not correcting/improving things that are within that coach’s area of responsiblity. He’s got to coach up his coaches. I’ve heard people say the team(players) has yet to gel together. Maybe the reality is Chow and Co. has yet to gel as a staff.

Interesting Comparison of State Universities:
USU’s new strength and conditioning center was built from the ground up within one year’s time. UH Manoa’s Campus Center Fitness Center began construction back in 2011 and is still not completed and behind schedule as of today. Mind you, USU being a state institution has to fight for funding with a number of other universities (Utah, Weber State, Southern Utah, Utah Vallley, etc).

Chow: Well Robert, no excuses. We don’t make excuses. No one feels sorry for us. We’re big boys. Having to fly on an airplane is not an excuse. Hiring and then firing my friend’s son as OC is not an excuse. Nope. No excuses. We got beat by a real good team. Give them credit. They are real good. Real big. Really experienced. Probably the best team we played all season. Really nice facilities. Really impressive. Hard to compete with a big budget program like that.

Chow: Yeah, he was real good. Real talented. Big time talent. Kind of tripped us up by passing the ball. Our QB’s need a couple of years to get used to game speed. That kid did it in two games. Really showed what a difference Saui makes……when he didn’t play in the 1st half of last weekend’s Colorado State game…..when Rams racked up all that rushing yardage.
#65 Warrior Dave, you should have a great time in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. So much history, so many must-see places. Highly recommend all the Smithsonian museums, and Arlington National Cemetery (must see changing of the guard at Tomb of Unknown). Went there in 1990 and promised myself I’d go again. Never realized it would be 15+ years before I made it back a second time.
Yesterday I attended the Cal versus Arizona game in the newly renovated Memorial Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus. Beautiful facility that essentially retained the facade of the old stadium with all the internals replaced. The Golden Bears are also having a tough season under a new coaching staff, but they did well against Arizona and might have pulled it out but for a couple of interceptions.
Stay positive Warriors! I know the team is going through some tough times, but the true measure of a Warrior is not the size of the win column but the size of the heart.

danny boy, nevada ran one entire offense based almost exclusively off the pistol, with one entire system of plays, counters, and reads based on one quarterback in the pistol formation. Teams nowadays went pick up on and started for utilize pistol offense concepts, including the formation without running um as the base offense philosophy.

lol Nevada just runs traditional singleback/I-formation plays. Only difference is that there is a mesh point between the QB and RB that the defense has to take account of.
No, dannyp, Chris Ault never just run regular I-formation/singleback plays in the pistol and called it a day. It was one entire coherent grouping of plays and offensive philosophy primarily run out of the pistol formation.

I’m just here collecting half a million bucks trying to decide if I can handle the job, and all of the travel that goes with it. Not my fault that the team lacks leadership. Hell, I can’t even hire a OC that can make it through the first day of fall practice. That does not reflect a lack of judgment or leadership on my part.” Chow is now 3-17, 1-17 against full fledged FBS teams. That is bad. Better left as an internal matter. Even it is true, what good does it do to make it public? With Chow’s record as the head coach, it’s better to fall on one’s own sword.
It was shocking that Aaron Price was released on the first day of practice this season. We still don’t know why that happened. I begin to wonder if there could have been some kind of Sandusky type scandal. My thoughts may be kind of wild but why all this hush-hush? Don’t we have a right to know? Now after an 0-8 season thus far, I don’t care for Chow’s coaching. It seems that we cold have the pros on our roster but with Chow coaching, we’ll be losers!
131 Kev-1. Not only does it show a lack of judgment, but it shows a lack of character on the part of Chow. Of course players need to step up. But so do the coaches. Bungled timeouts, poor preparation (“I thought we were practicing fast, but I guess we need to practice faster to get our players/QB Graham ready for game speed) are just a few examples. Chow is getting paid big bucks to be the boss. To have the boss call out his college players for a lack of leadership on TV is just chicken. Why didn’t he call out his buddy’s son when he let him go on a season long paid vacation as our ex-OC?
Bottom line: Chow needs to put on HIS big boy pants and take responsibility for any leadership problems. Unless, of course, this is simply Chow’s clever way of negotiating a Price-like paid vacation. Start doing stupid things in public, like giving stupid interviews to CBS, the Utah paper, and TV reporters so that public outrage forces Ben Jay to fire him. That way, he walks away with millions of dollars to spend in Manhattan Beach in his retirement. Think about it: how else do you explain his “I’m not sure about head coaching” statements???? He couldn’t be that stupid, could he?!?!?!
I believe this roster and the ones in the wings have the ability to be better than what has been shown…..sooner or later they will have a chance to do just that. Aloha all–back from a long week of recruiting kanaka maoli–malama pono! It is unfortunate that a few have taken to physical threat of other posters, of all things, an internet chat room set up for the support of warrior football.
These type of machismo is ironically just the opposite; it masks the insecurity and ignorance of a person who does not have his /her own platform in life. To impose their physicality on another person because of a contrary opinion is not just silly, it an exercise that you are only master of the most base instincts and without your own place and confidence in society.
Further, it is plain ignorant for a variety of reasons, first of all it is a potential felony….perhaps, you think, boola is bordering on hyperbole?: 18 U.S.C. § 875(c) states: “Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.” From the wording of § 875(c) it is clear that the legislator did not require the element of ‘intent.’ Thus, it is irrelevant if the accused claims he/she did not have the intent to produce any injury on the victim; the mere act of sending the e-mail with threatening messages typifies the criminal conduct. In short, this can have serious repercussions in the legal arena.
Neither personal or family safety is threatened here, and thus, lets place this all in the perspective that these are just comments, and football is just a game. Many of the folks here on the board are older and this is a benevolent pastime of both hobby and by extension, the support of the University of Hawai’i. Thus, it is rather odd and sad, that a small few, bring such a profound lack of education and respect to the board, that they casually threatened people for sport.That said, and you still feeling froggy, I live in Harlem off of 124th and Manhattan Ave….not close enough for you, most of my ohana lives in Nanakuli homestead–lets have a gentleman’s conversation about this nonsense.

Calen lived with us for a year. We took him in due to the poor education system in Hawaii. Inflated grades doesn’t help pass the SAT scores. Hawaii has a minimum SAT score to qualify to get in. Tutors, personal trainers, physicians, all were retained to help him qualify for UH. We got no assistance or help from Mcmackin. They never returned phone calls or emails. We still have emails unanswered. Go back and look at how many players are offered schollies from Hawaii? Where are they? Doing nothing. My husband, daughter and entire family stood behind him. We drove him to Carson twice a day to train. We had endless tutors working with him. We were not going to let him fail. His dream was to play for Hawaii. He came to our house as a cousin. Now, he will always be like a son to us. The love my husband gave to him is beyond words. He has his own bedroom at our house.
At one point we almost sent him to Texas to have a 5th year of high school. Did you know Colt Brennan had a 5th year of high school on the east coast? Many football players take 5 years of high school. The list is endless.
He took the SAT several times. He was frustrated but NEVER gave up. After living with us and knowing how important and how hard it is to get good grades he is a Deans List student. He has a support group in Hawaii that we could never thank enough. He worked hard to play for YOU! And this is how the fans react?
Let me say this one last thing. Our family is Jewish. We know adversity. We have risen above the adversity to be better people. To educate, work hard, and be good citizens of our country and believe in God. This is football. It’s not life or death. It’s a game people.
Major football programs have a hundred or more staff members. Go look at USC, Texas A&M or any big program. They have financial donors who make their programs. It takes money. Your Governor rather spend 3 million bucks holding a special session that could have waited until January. You folks have bigger problems then the football team.
If someone was threatening us, keep it up. We have no problems contacting authorities. Had we needed to pay for a meal for the team we would have donated direct more money to Na Koa. Then they could have paid for the meal then there is no violation.
To all you haters, keep hating. To all you true fans, mahalo for your support. The boys really appreciate the love you send them.

Polymom I hear your frustration but many of us realize the commitment and dedication our student/athletes sacrifice daily and we are thankful for their contributions. Any program will have negative individuals who have their own agendas and will continue to be negative whether a team is winning or losing. I would not pay attention to all the whiners that come into this blog because this is not an indication of the true fan base and our love of our state that we live in. As with any state of the union, we are not alone in having problems and I am sure California has her fair share too. Our federal government is not doing well either since the fair trade act in 2000 which opened up opportunities for our big manufacturing companies to relocate to communist China which has cost many Americans to lose their jobs. I appreciate having our only football team whether we win or lose. I always believe that our student/athletes who strive to do their best on the field and off, will always be winners.

Long time lurker, but I need to ask a question. Does anyone have stats regarding the 3-3-5 defensive scheme? It seems to me that it fails rather miserably. And to make matters worse, it’s used almost exclusively on long yardage situations, usually on 3rd down. I hope coach TK recognizes this, perhaps with some peeps with the ins and changes to a more standard nickel package. Last I heard during the USU game, they were something like 8-12 on 3rd down situations, which kills me. Also, what happened to the 7-8 man rotation of defensive linemen? I heard Beau was again in on like 95% of the snaps… He’s awesome, but dude he needs a blow once in a while!

When Rolo was calling plays with Moniz as QB (+5,000 yards / 39 TDʻs), Hawaiiʻs offense weekly, was ranked between number 3-5 in the country.

This would say that you could be good at doing the minor stuff but when you get to the top, you just don’t know how to handle. Chow admits to having fun as an assistant coach but now THIS. So the TV commenters say that Hawaii’s offense is too predictable. The Oppositions just try to rush the Quarterback and they win; and with a three man rush at that. Some of you might say that my comments here are just too critical and that this type of remarks could not come from a “fan”. Well if all you guys can talk about is “don’t say anything bad about the team or the coaches” it makes me wonder that if you guys were in control, Fred Von Appen would still be here. You guys say IMUA! I say HULI!

I don’t know why Boolakanaka is recruiting unless he wants the real cream of the crop. His school rejects (if memory serves) some 90% of its applicants which applicants are usually in the top 5% of their high school graduates, almost, if not perfect SATs, high recommendations from their teachers etc
Eli Whitney is Boolakanaka’s school program for non-traditional students. Never sure what that means – perhaps a QB that can run 4.3, pass 70-80 yards accurately and doesn’t require a scholarship – which Boola Boola does not offer.
Thankfully, W-L record isn’t super important to recruiting. If it was, UH would be national title contenders following the highly successful 2006 & 2007 seasons and teams like Utah St/San Jose St would never have winning seasons. Other teams will definitely use UH’s record for negative recruiting, but recruiting is more about the coaches selling the school, the culture, and 3rd-ly the program to the recruit and their family.
How long Chow hangs around is unknown, but whoever is next once Chow is out, is going to inherit much better athletes on the roster and success won’t take long. Kirkwood and Haynes look like really nice players on the outside, the RB corp is young and solid with more good RBs committed for 2014. The DLine is getting better and getting a big boost with Kory and Castro in 2014. The bulk of the LB and DB depth is young and good talent.
The OLine was the issue last year and continues to be the issue this year, but it should improve with the 3 redshirts becoming available next year (Hollis, Allen & Wa’a), plus whoever Naeole can bring in.
The future success of UH’s program will depend on Naeole’s OL recruiting this offseason. UH has good enough talent at the skill positions to score points once the OL is up to par. We’ve seen this in flashes this year.
Taking stats for one season doesn’t make a head coach. Norm Chow has OC stats that would blow your mind but look what happened.
#152.. with Rolo as the OC Hawi had a 5000 yd passer, a 1000 yard rusher and two 1000 yard WRs so don’t tell me he can’t get it done. If you’re a Rolo hater then that’s “your take” but don’t try to distort the facts brah.
155–The purpose of the outreach is to make native kids aware that their aspiration should always be high. Further, many haumana, with those band of scores which would make them credible candidates, are not aware that this type of school is interested in their admission. For instance, we had several top notch native candidates from places not frequently associated with our school, e.g. Ho’oleha on Moloka’i, Honoka’a and Ka’u. While one does have to be in a range, perfect scores are not the aim (if so, they might be more comfortable at someplace like MIT). So, it is one awareness and two, to inspire and cultivate.
Our institution has a long and pronounced history with kanaka maoli, from Henry Opukahaia (first recorded native Hawaiian to attend a 4 your college in 1811) to Noa Webster Aluli, (first documented Native Hawaiian to complete post-doc work, 1905)…..
Hawaii is lucky to have Ben Jay as its AD. He is thoughtful, very pragmatic and has a true vision for the school. Folks in Hawaii who can criticize and gripe from afar will not dissuade Ben from what he wants to accomplish. It will those who have the means to help the UH who choose not to do so that will do so. This includes our elected officials, big businesses and individual of means who dwell or now dwell in the State.
Time will tell if he can accomplish what he wants to do. Great to have him on board.

While I appreciate Chow’s openness and candor, I am disappointed that he would make such a statement(s) to the media as this raises all kinds of questions and emotions for the players and commits for 2014 and 2015.
Also, I do hope the Ben Jay is putting in place or starting the mechanism to find a new HC, be it for 2014 or later. I’m sure the assistant coaches must be wondering if they will be at UH next year.
