Tee time

We could sit around and dissect the first seven games of this UH football season.

We could weigh in on the Sean Schroeder-Taylor Graham debate.

We could even try to look up the weather in Logan, Utah.

To all those, this blog host says: Nah.

Instead, Let’s have a contest.

To all members of the UH Warrior football team:

the “boos” you heard at the end of the 2nd quarter was aimed at Coach Chow for his decision to punt the ball rather go for 1st down. Also, it took the coaching staff nearly 10 seconds to call a time out – that’s totally ridiculous!!!

even if you failed to make 1st down, Colorado State would have just “downed the ball” to end the half.

Much Mahalo to (J)J for his creative T-shirt design. Beyond the zany charactor he portrays in real life, he has always been a true fan and an outstanding member of the Tsaiko Grill Team. His supporting cast includes Homey, Koakane, and Hi-Flyer.

    Good Morning Tsaiko’s–

I want to do something positive for the team. They need our moral support right now. I hope you all will join me. And then ask 5 friends to join you in doing this. And ask them to ask 5 friends to join them. If everyone did this and passed it on…the team could recieve thousands of emails. You can pour your heart out. Or you can just send an email telling them YOU support them. Right now they need a positive connection to their fans. To know who they are playing for.

Please send an email to the team at–

    Football@Hawaii.Edu

    In the subject section–

    PLEASE PRINT FOR TEAM

    AGAIN–

    Send the email to–

    Football@Hawaii.Edu

Please make sure you put in the subject section

    PLEASE PRINT FOR TEAM

You might think this is crazy. But the team needs to hear from you. And these emails are for the team. They are not bashing coaches emails. I sent one and asked my friends on FB to send emails too! Lets see if our positive thoughts will help them move forward. Spending 5 minutes to let the team knw YOU care might let them know how much you care for them.

Hope you’ll join me and get them hundreds if not thousands of positive thoughts going their way!!!!

  24. Fan October 28, 2013 9:03 am

4…..it may well have been the “booing” at the end of the half was directed to the coaching staff. However I’m sure the players heard it just as loudly and don’t know how they would know that they were not being booed. I understand the frustration and feel it myself. But I thought the booing was a sad display by the fans.

  25. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 9:04 am

    4. Correct… You know we have a mess when coaches are all arguing with each other…

Even though we got the ball back at the end, I thought Hawaii should have surprised onside kick at the end of the game with 3 minutes to go… In my opinion, the clock was our biggest enemy and whether or not Colorado started on their own 20 or Hawaii’s 45, a 1st down was pretty much going to end the game. Colorado St only had 5 players up on kick off and Hawaii could have attempted to get the ball back at midfield with almost 3 minutes to go.. I just thought it was a good time to be aggressive but oh well..

I don’t know the rules but I don’t like how the holding penalty and false start penalty didn’t stop the clock against Colorado St. It almost is like a good thing to have a false start on 2nd and 10 knowing you can drain another 20+ seconds off the clock.

  26. Former UH Athlete October 28, 2013 9:07 am

Booing by fans is very poor behavior in non-professional sports. If boos are directed at referees, then it’s fair game.

But, many fans aren’t smart enough to know better.

  32. Chee Hoo October 28, 2013 9:27 am

Watching Saturday’s game from the mauka sideline behind the UH bench, seems like the coaching staff is in disarray. Chow arguing with Demo just before the half. Some coaches looking as if the game were a lost cause. Naeole looks lost in terms of gathering his troops. Chow should get Al Noga on his staff. That guy was Mr. Energetic the whole evening. Always in the sideline huddles giving encouragement to the defense and special teams. Giving pointers to the D-line when they came off the field. Noga probably is more qualified then our current D-line coach. Shoot he could strap on the pads and helmet and still wreck havoc against our O-line.

@Stephen Tsai: In regards to post #12, if Chow was afraid of Colorado State running a play on them, why even bother calling a timeout in the first place? He should have just let the clock run. I think Chow’s explanation was bs.

  36. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 9:43 am

    32. I sit right behind the visitors bench and it’s complete opposite. Joey Porter is in complete control of the D linemen and he’s not a screamer or any of that. You see him teaching constantly and motivating his guys to keep going…. Def sensed a positive vibe there.

Wish Hawaii could bring back former U of Hawaii players that would get the attention, trust, and respect of the players. Vince Manuwai is a name that pops out as far as a guy who knows what its like to have success as a Warrior and players would trust. I know Nate Ilaoa and Mike Lafaele have that radio gig but also a couple guys I think would fit in. Ilaoa seems more qualified to handle and recruit RBs then Wiesehan.

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid October 28, 2013 10:03 am

    Polymom –

Done! This is what I had to say, in case any of the team or their family miss it:

    Aloha UH Rainbow Warriors!

When Hawaiian Warriors were engaged in long marches and protracted battles, one of the hardships they endured was “eating hard poi”. This was basically poi which had been dried and preserved for battle rations. It was not very good eating, hard and bitter to the taste, and it was sometimes the only sustenance Warriors would have in the heat of battle. But, it sustained the Warriors and helped them to victory. It was also considered a tribute to the Warrior spirit when it was said “Warriors eat hard poi!” It was the same thing as saying that Warriors face adversity, hardships, and challenges with out complaint. That is the essence of being a great Warrior.

Anyone who has watched practice, the games and knows the team, realizes that the Hawai’i Football Warriors are far better than their record. You Warriors have come so close so many times, and we in the Warrior ‘Ohana are proud that you have never quit fighting. Keep playing hard, every down, every situation – the win will come. Believe in yourselves and each other, and play hard for each other. Victory is at hand, it’s in you! Never stop believing that!

You team members have worked hard during the off season, practiced hard and made countless personal sacrifices to be a Rainbow Warrior. We fans will always remember that, and what ever happens, you are a source of inspiration to us. Mahalo to you, Warriors, for all that you do!

Warriors eat hard poi! You have tasted it, Warriors! Now it is time to taste victory, which you have all fought so hard for, and so richly deserve!

    We believe in you!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Babo,
    Here’s my answer to your yesterday’s post #86 —

We are in the storming stages of team building and we have to get it right (get thru our/these fb frustrations) in order for the team and us to proceed on to performing (winning games) otherwise we will be stuck in the storming stage for forever 🙁

    Stages of Team Building:
    http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheadername1=Content-Disposition&blobheadername2=Content-Type&blobheadervalue1=inline%3B+filename%3D%22Stages+of+Team+Building.pdf%22&blobheadervalue2=application%2Fpdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1251852066228&ssbinary=true

    So —

Step 1) Confront our fb demons (from wingt’s yesterday’s post #335):
    http://twinetwork.com/files/upload/articles/Turn%20Around%20a%20TEAM.pdf

Step 2) Avoid Self-Fulfilling Prophecies [*REMEMBER* Psychology 101 class @UH!?! It means: Stay positive for yourself, for us fans, for our team!!! ]

    Step 3) READ these, *please*:

    http://stronginsideout.com/2012/04/30/killing-the-self-fulfilling-prophecy/

    http://stronginsideout.com/2011/09/01/shut-up-defeatist/

    http://stronginsideout.com/2012/04/16/expect-and-prepare-for-the-unexpected/

Step 4) Evaluate (post on WB & everywhere else) with care in order to promote successful progress in both team and personal player & coach adjustments!

    ——-
No, being and staying positive is not going to be easy but we have to in order to more successfully get to where we want to be.

Do it for yourself, for us fellow fans, and for our Warrior Team!

GO WARRIORS!!! GO US WARRIOR FANS!!! 😀

#36….our coaches would be in control, and coaching up the players too…..IF, we were winning and in control of a game at halftime.

Unfortunately, losing breeds all kinds of unwanted stuff…..yelling, screaming, blaming others, and of course, booing by the fans.

  55. jimmy the lock October 28, 2013 10:25 am

Challenge them? Ok den, I challenge the UH Warrior offense to run the no huddle better than Mililani Trojan’s offense.

If Chow knew he was going to punt, why call a time out? Just let the clock run, then punt.

OR did he need a time out to figure that out first?

I think that’s why peeps booed. The coaching looked disfunctional at that point.

You could see after we punted before the half. demo and chow got into it becuz chow gives up to easy. He plays too conservative and the coaching staff knows it. Demo wanted to go for it and hopefully go into half with alittle momentum.

  60. wasabi October 28, 2013 10:35 am

53- it is absolutely about the staff. Everyone knows it. Ask your son…
There are a lot of talented guys on the team. They need COMPETENT LEADERS to guide them to a WIN. Who is the hc? The oc? The qb coach? Who is in the booth?????? It has EVERYTHING to do with coaches…

Ask I don’t blame coach naole for the OLine problems nor do I blame the OLine. Football is gout consistency and the OLine has had a different coach the last 3 years. Just like Alex smith he was terrible each year before harbaugh becuz each year he had a diff Offensive coordinator.

AND….why do they keep running inside the tackles??

  66. Jonj October 28, 2013 10:41 am

    60 wasabi
You mean like competent leaders who when we can’t run the ball all game don’t run the ball up the middle 2x in a row when we desperately need a TD?!??

  67. jimmy the lock October 28, 2013 10:49 am

You mean go for it on 4th down like how the Ducks went for it on 4th down on their own 26 yard line? Must have some big time confidence in your defense.

  68. primo123 October 28, 2013 10:56 am

BTW……….Jim Donovan didnt want to hire Norm Chow………jus sayin……….

  69. Derek October 28, 2013 10:59 am

Bad teams make things happen (in reverse). Good teams make things happen (positive).
Examples, bad things happen when you fumble and the other guy return it for a TD after making a very long kickoff return. Bad things happen when you miss a very makeable field goal attempt in the 3rd quarter. Bad things happen when you have a first and goal on the 2 yard line and can’t get it in the end zone and settle for a field goal in the 4th quarter. You try 2 plays up the middle and get nothing, then try a pass which is incomplete. In a similar situation earlier, you fake the ball to the RB and the QB runs the option to the left side and score standing up. Bad teams happen when when you don’t execute (fumble on man in motion play) and stupid penalties. I don’t get it.

Good teams happen when you capitalize on other people’s mistakes and score, returning a fumble for a TD. Good things happen when you have success running the football on the perimeter (3 TDS by Bibbs). Good things when you stop the run (gave up only 32 yards rushing). Good teams happen when you rush the QB and put pressure forcing bad throws are getting sacks.

It’s the same old story. We have found the enemy and the enemy is “our” own team. We seem to implode at the most critical times and can’t sustain offensive drives for extended periods of time. The lack of consistency is glaring. Our offensive line are not opening holes and the pass protection ain’t that great either. I’m not surprised we are 0-7. We have given up at least 30 or more points every single game. Our offense is hard pressed to even get that many points. It doesn’t look any better the next 2 road games, both in cold weather too. The first line is Utah St. -23. That means a score about 37-14 and that seems about right.

  70. primo123 October 28, 2013 11:02 am

I dont think UH will win a game this year. 0-12.

But, that said, I’ll be there to support the team regardless……..

  71. Konoman1 October 28, 2013 11:02 am

I will send an email.. Thanks Poly mom .. But perhaps we need a blessing too for the team…

  72. primo123 October 28, 2013 11:05 am

Colorado St went totally vanilla in the second half.

Was that the coach’s statment to his players? We are going to run the ball and run this clock out. We dont have to score one more point to win this game. I am putting my trust in you. Now go out and Do It!

  73. Bigislandkurt October 28, 2013 11:08 am

What’s the chance of Norm Chow retiring?

    BIK

E-mail was sent on my address. I also sent out your request to all former players in my database.
Great idea and show of support!

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 28, 2013 11:12 am

Does anyone know why Chow feels the need to platoon the QBs? I don’t accept the idea that it forces the defense to prepare for 2 or 3 QB styles as it has not worked thus far. It’s not fooling anyone.

8 games into the season and we don’t know which QB is better? Or is it because we want to split reps so that our future QB Graham gets at least some quality playing time but keeping Schroeder in because he has the advantage of Graham?

  77. primo123 October 28, 2013 11:17 am

    #76

He platoons to keep the fans off balance.

I’m sure he knows that he’s suppose to put one guy and leave that one guy. But, UH doesnt have a clear cut “One Guy”.

Each guy has good and bad.

I’m sure he wants to stick with Graham, because he had him as the starter until he got hurt.

But Schroeder does some good things…..but Schroeder’s bad is baaaaaad……

  78. walter October 28, 2013 11:19 am

  79. Derek October 28, 2013 11:20 am

My opinion, prepare to get ready Larry Tuileta to start as a true freshman.

  80. ALLAN October 28, 2013 11:22 am

IT WAS WRONG, BUT THE REFS PROBABLY FIGURED THAT THE COACHES DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH EXTRA TIME, SO WHENTHE CLOCK WAS SUPPOSED TO STOP AFTER CERTAIN INCOMPLETE PASSES, PENALTIES, 1ST DOWN, ETC., THEY JUST LET THE TIME RUN INSTEAD OF STOPPING THE CLOCK, HOPING NOBODY WOULD NOTICE.

BTW, BOOING IS A LOT FRIENDLIER THAN PUNCHING THE BACK OF THE HEAD OF THE GUY SITTING IN FRONT OF YOU.

  81. primo123 October 28, 2013 11:27 am

    haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! so true!

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #4
A-House — yes, the boos were for the conservative punt call, not the players.

Reminded me of a Vince Lombardi quote: “Winning is not everything — but making the effort to win is”.

  83. Chee Hoo October 28, 2013 11:34 am

    79. Sounds good. But what was Chow’s comment earlier in the year, “he doesn’t start a frosh QB, as they need to wait in line till they become juniors/seniors, ala Carson Palmer, Matt Lienart!” That’s old school football.

  84. Jonj October 28, 2013 11:37 am

My opinion is for chow to slow things down and let the kids get their breathes and think alittle. I think all the false starts and fumbles will start to disappear.

And my second opinion is for chow to retire! I said it from the beginning that this was a bad hire!

  85. PolyMom October 28, 2013 11:37 am

Thanks Don Wier! If it was the USC fans…they would have ten thousand emails by now.

    Just sayin.

Please email and show your support!

we always had false starts and fumbles even when we used to huddle.

although, not sure what difference it makes for the fumbles.

  88. jeffdman2000 October 28, 2013 11:41 am

fire chow already…I am not going to anymore games. Season tickets…I cant even give them away.

  89. primo123 October 28, 2013 11:41 am

    here’s a thought.

    2013 = 0-12

    2013 = 2-10

    77. The reason Hawaii is platooning is because SS right now is giving Hawaii the best chance to win. But at the same time, Hawaii isn’t winning so by platooning, it is still giving Graham and Woolsey experience on the field to fill roles.

It is apparent that Chow wants Graham(Carson Palmer) to grasp the starting job, but he simply isn’t showing it on game day.. Also wants Woolsey to be utilized for short yardage and running situations similar to how Boise used Hedrick and how Ole Miss uses Brunetti. Team gets sloppy during any personnel changes so it back fires quite often…

Now I am not saying I agree with it. But that is his purpose… After 5 losses, I would have been developing for next season already and playing Woolsey just to get him on the field… Thats what most big time schools do once a bowl game is basically out of reach.

36… Joey Porter is a CSU coach? cool

RB recruiting seems to be fine. The stable of RBs is solid, young and more coming in.

We all know the real challenge is the OL. Naeole must earn his paycheck in the recruiting department. I think this group of OL just isn’t good enough to play in any offensive system.

The good recruiters are good salesmen. You have to sell the program, the coaches, the school, and advantages of coming to UH over a school closer to home… not an easy task. Because of his vast experience, Chow commands a room when he’s there, so that’s a good thing when he makes a visit to a recruit’s house. Chow is finding players in all corners of the US, and Jones was limited to California and the transfers.

The one knock on Jones was that he’s pretty stoic on and off the field. Now that he’s been at SMU for 6 years, I’m starting to think his demeanor is what prevents him from hauling in top level recruits and advancing to the next level. He can coach them to bowl eligibility, but he’s limited by the talent on the roster.

Being located in Dallas, TX, Jones’ should not have issues with finding talent, but when I watch their games, it’s like watching a whiter version of his teams in UH. There are only a couple top level athletes and not much speed on defense. Jones seemingly has not been able to outduel TCU, Texas, A&M, Ok St, UO, and even TxTech for high profile recruits. Obvious conference affiliation hurts, but there’s no excuse for not fielding an athletic roster in Dallas. What’s really shocking with Jones’ SMU teams is that he still hasn’t found a consistent QB in 6 years.

  106. A-House October 28, 2013 12:13 pm

me tinks that if Chow and Kaumeyer keep discussing football philosophy, the latter will not be here come 12/2/2013 – maybe Chow too!

perhaps why Price is long gone, but collecting his 6 figure salary – actually, never started after seeing the writing on the wall.

I guess I’ll get to see Fred VonAppen (FV) II – 0 fo 12.

  107. obachan October 28, 2013 12:14 pm

#32 Coaches instruct off the field and on the sidelines but they can’t always be responsible for how the players execute their assignments once they’re in the game. HOWEVER, coaches and especially the head coach are responsible for their decorum on the sidelines. Is it too much to ask Chow as the head coach to get his staff in line – that is something that is definitely within his purview and something that he can control as the head coach. Bickering coaches definitely looks bad, doesn’t inspire confidence and lowers team morale.

  108. Former UH Athlete October 28, 2013 12:27 pm

    UHfan808… good links!

Way too much defeatist attitude by some on the blog. Negativity spreads like cock-a-roaches at a specific Chinese restaurant I won’t mention here.

  109. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 12:40 pm

    105. Not saying is a big issue. Point is Hawaii should try to focus on bringing in former Hawaii players like lot of schools do. Would love to see Manuwai come here. Or Satele when he retires. I like Rolo as an assistant and liked him here as a OC. Too man inexperience coaches who don’t even understand the Hawaii tradition. No offense to Utah student assistants but those guys seem to bleed red on Twitter and I would prefer coaches who bleed green.

    Just preference…..

    101 jimmy the lock –

Thank you for reading those links 🙂

Just so we can be straight about this, we’re addressing negativity and it’s relation to motivation. Like when there’s a incident there’s usually two issues for things to get outta hand: 1) the problem, and 2) disrespect by one or more parties. It’s already difficult to get thru problem-solving the issue but throw in disrespect and literally NOTHING will get done (= fixed). If we want to get thru this 0 streak (= problem) then we have to work things out thoughtfully and with respect in order to get down to the root of the problem without negative FAN distractions (notice: I didn’t say positive, constructive feedback). The team is in it’s storming stages (= fragile state) and we need to be supportive (= let them figure it out = without scolding them for trying)

    —–

    To answer your question:

WE need to concentrate on ourFANselves

The coaches frustrations partly come from our frustrations with them

Remember that we are seeing spectactular moments of glory so they mist be doing something right, right!?

Instead of our trying to micromanage them, WE need to stop communicating our insecurities, our self-prophecies to them thru talking (harmful insults and complaints!) with others throughout our own community (=making others around us doubt and feel insecure, too, which incidentally translates to all potential recruits – so don’t do it = talk bad about the team i.e, you suck, i hate you, you stink, you have no idea what you’re doing, etc.)

Self-fulfilling prophecies = we are being our own worst enemy

We have to fix ourFANselves and let the coaches coach(, dagnammit)

Our comments have to recognize improvements – and even point where there may be none – but our job as a fan is not to cut down and berate fellow human beings who are just trying to do their best but to encourage these fellow human beings into going above and beyond (= be motivated) to want to do their best

    —–

Almost Lastly, the fact that the team remains on the field and comes out week after week and especially after half time (and even warm up in front of us before half time starts) must mean that the coaching staff is doing something right (= motivating the players inspite of how we fans may behave – poorly – toward them)

Lastly, the players are being led by their coaches who are their ultimate leader. When we cut down their leader so much that we want to get rid of them then who are the players supposed to follow: US FANS who may have never coached a college level team before!?

    Hmpf

    Really?

  121. Former UH Athlete October 28, 2013 1:41 pm

Jeezy… Naeole is a Kahuku boy, so that’s a start. I don’t think it’s overly necessary to have alumni occupy positions on the staff. I do think it is important for UH to have coaches with Hawaii ties, but with a heavy Hawaii-tie staff under Jones&McMackin, almost every top local went mainland. Chow has done a much better job of keeping the top locals in-state with his staff. I don’t think JJ or Mack keeps Wa’a, Wily, Kennedy, and Lakalaka in state. At this point, 6 of the top 10 or 15 locals (depending on which scouting website you look at) have verbally committed to UH for 2014. That’s better than anybody in decades, before mainland schools discovered Hawaii as a viable recruiting ground.

Looking at Oregon’s staff, only Don Pellum (LBs/recrutiing) and Steve Greatwood (Oline/Run game Coordinator) are Oregon alum. HC Helfrich has Oregon roots, but did not attend Oregon. Both Pellum and Greatwood were at Oregon for 20+ years, long before they were a top program.

For a more comparable comparison. Fresno St does not have anybody on the main staff with Fresno roots. Only 1 GA is Fresno alum.

As a random side note… Oregon had a 26 year stretch where they did not make a bowl game (1963-1989), and for a long time were battling Oregon St for worst team in Pac 8/10.

  122. Papololoco October 28, 2013 1:43 pm

    # 73… Chow will never retire, he’s too stubborn and too selfish. The only way he leaves is he will have to be forced out.

  123. Papololoco October 28, 2013 1:45 pm

Watching the UH coaching staff arguing on the sidlines last weekend was like watching the Keystone Kops.

  124. markazulu October 28, 2013 1:54 pm

I accept the fact we have been more competitive i dont accept the fact we are 0-7 and the fact that we had to comeback in majority of those games. There are positives from this team but the Negatives stick out because despite the effort its not getting the job done. I dont wanna blame anyone because i believe in someway we all have a part in the success of this team from coaches, players and even the fans.

  125. wasabi October 28, 2013 1:55 pm

112- the fans are responsible for this disgrace? Wow, that’s interesting…..

  126. markazulu October 28, 2013 1:57 pm

Remember after losing to fresno state the fans gave the boys and coaches a standing ovation for the effort in the 4th the fans will boo or cheer you based off of what you show them. It’s like that in every sport.

  127. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:01 pm

    122. I dont mind the Naeole hire… Just prefer reaching out to our best Alumni like CSU did with Joey Porter. There is a different sense of Warrior pride with a Vince Manuwai versus Naeole…Although not a big issue at all..

I don’t want a heavy Hawaii tie staff.. I want the best qualified Coordinators possible. Best O line coach possible… Within reason that we could afford.

Position coaches such as RB, WRs, TEs, LBs, D line… Those are positions where I feel bringing back a former NFL player with University of Hawaii ties can really benefit. The Adrian Klemms, Jeff Ulbrichs, Vince Manuwai, Samson Satele when he retires… I even think Chad Owens some day will be a great WR coach. Rolo started off with a small role and worked his way up to being a good OC….

If Hawaii can afford Oregon type coaches, then I could care less about ties… But this is University of Hawaii and we need to maximize the most out of the budget we have…. Well see how good Fresno St. is next year once Carr is gone… That coach ran into a great situation. That’s i some team doesn’t throw more money out at Deruyter after this year. Seems like a stepping stone job in 1st place.

Lastly, I completely disagree about recruits…. We landed RBs who were not wanted by big time schools. UCLA didn’t want Lakalaka. We didn’t sway him from a UCLA scholarship. Aofaga Wily was set to go to BYU but they offered him a grey shirt..

June Jones landed Timmy Chang, Jason Rivers, Samson Satele, Vince Manuwai, Brashton Satele so I wouldn’t say he wouldn’t get the guys you mentioned… Besides Kennedy, its not like Hawaii is landing the the 3 and 4 star recruits…. Those guys are still going to the Pac 12 when offered…

Part of good recruiting is evaluating talent for what you need. Not signing guys that Rivals says is top 10 in Hawaii in which they havent seen a single game..

Pumba Williams is in the top 10 rankings for Rivals and Hawaii is his only offer. If Norm Chow was beating out Pac 12 schools or schools like Boise, then its a different story. But Kamalei Correa still chose Boise last year, Savaiinaea chose UCLA, Pagano Clemson, Koehler Arkansas, Colton Goeas Kansas, Tabuyo Texas A&M, Titus Failauga Oregon St…

So who did Hawaii exactly beat out for our guys??? Kennedy is the 1 gem I will give props to.. But it takes more than that to build a team. Wheres the QB in 2 recruiting classes???

  128. st. anthony trojan October 28, 2013 2:01 pm

Been following from the start of the season.. just some random thoughts..

Making changes in position should be done at spring ball me thinks..unless, position had been depleted by injuries etc.

Watched this past game…. first time I watched them play.

SS is not the quarterback they should have in there….
In the red zone…should have a mobile quarterback maybe …????

Ask ne defensive coach … How much easier to devise a game defensive plan for a running QB versus one that is not mobile …. how much easier.. percentage wise ???

Our defensive backs… are giving up way to many long balls…..

Mr. Chow.. go back up in the booth…you have no enthusiasm for the field.. and to fire
up players…also.. ask Mr. Mui…. or other attorneys.. about .. having themselves for a client..
Their is no question of your ability… up in the booth as an offensive coordinator….go do what you are excellent at… the wins will come…

This is not a personal criticism of you or staff or members of the team…. just what I observe…

Still support all team members and the school… in all sports….

    IMUA

  129. Oingo Boingo October 28, 2013 2:06 pm

  130. Hugh G. Rection October 28, 2013 2:10 pm

The Warriors need to first learn “How To” win! They have mastered the “Want To” win! You can’t win the Kentucky Derby Riding a mule!

  131. NotNasti October 28, 2013 2:12 pm

Hawaii cannot afford to pay Adrian Klemm, Jeff Ulbrich, Nick Rolovich etc. with the amount of money we pay our assistants. They would have to agree to come here out of the goodness of their hearts.

  132. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:16 pm

Its just not smart to let your top guys like Rolo and Lelie go to Reno when it would have been a simple hire for Hawaii. Those guys get the culture, know what it takes to succeed here. Have a sense of pride to the program… Instead, we have grad assistants from Utah.. Which may be good some day but taking a huge risk… I don’t really know the impact Naole has brought to Hawaii yet but I heard someone say he was the D line coach at Iolani last year. Now he is a D1 O line coach. I guess if the Brooklyn Nets are willing to hire J kidd right after retiring, then its not a huge risk.

  133. Derek October 28, 2013 2:16 pm

Trojan-eez! Maybe you are on to something. Chow up in the booth and calling the plays up there and seeing a better picture. Somebody on the field, the designated “cheer leader”, ala Nick Saban, the Mr. Positive person, whoever that is. It’s worth a try. Dang, we’re 0-7.

  134. greenthumb October 28, 2013 2:17 pm

PolyMom, thank you for the e-mail address. I will be sending a message after work today. It is very kind of you to share the address and encourage fans without personal ties to use it … “back in the day” I remember getting hotel fax numbers and sending messages for the basketball team c/o Riley Wallace before tournament play. This is a lot more immediate and more certain.

Speaking of basketball, for a while the team struggled a lot on the road, and Wallace brought in the husband-and-wife (?) team of UH psych profs (or maybe they contacted him?). Anyway, old-time minds wonder whether they are around and whether there have been any overtures by the team or by them toward the team? IIRC, their focus was about positive thinking and avoiding some of the negative self-talk … kind of similar to the links UHfan808 posted above.

  135. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:18 pm

Fighting coaches are like fighting parents….only going disjoint the kids.

  136. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:19 pm

    132. Those are examples of guys Hawaii could have considered from the start…. Obviously they moved up the latter now….

Which is why I would reach out to a Timmy Chang who is a grad assistant at SMU right now. He might become a good OC soon… If Manuwai is still around, see if he is interested in coaching. Too late now that we hired Naeole. Just examples of guys I think the program should have originally reached out too. I am pretty sure Hawaii could have afforded Rolo if Norm Chow hired him right away instead of Tommy Lee.

  137. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:19 pm

The offense guru, Chow, was going to keep Rolo? for what? to teach Rolo his offense?

    doubtful.

  141. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:23 pm

    138. The offensive guru, Ault hired Rolo… Who says you can’t teach a different offense while integrating something Rolo brings to the table?

    Joni,

A position coach works with his kids since February and you don’t hold him responsible at all for their current performance???? Thought I was nice to say I would give him until next year in access his ability as a coach. You’re giveing him two more years. Wow!

How do you teach someone to win?

  147. cocobean October 28, 2013 2:28 pm

    Tee it up!.

I can see why Chow is giving TG a long hard look. He has the tools to make all the throws Chow wants. He just hasn’t shown the composure and confidence needed to run the O when the lights come on.

One area of concern with SS is his ability to make the throws in a short ball control passing game. The types of passes teams use like running play – quick horizontal throws to the WRs, the bubble screens, the down and outs, and the quick slants. If SS is going to start I’d have him and the QB coach work on these types of passes. Set a goal to improve in this area. Get a lot of reps. Any improvement in this area will go a long way in sustaining drives and avoiding so many 3n outs.

  148. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:31 pm

    141. Chang is a grad assistant.. I never said to hire him as a OC… You work your way up to OC. Manuwai and Naeole are probably equal in recruiting connections… So Neaole hasn’t landed a recruit yet. So don’t know where you are getting that from….

I like Demo. He is a little nutty but his unit is the most consistent. He does a good job recruiting Florida and bringing in some speed.

Wiesehan doesn’t really bring much to the table. That is a position where we could have landed a Hawaii tie kind of guy. Not hard to coach RBs.

Don’t know what Rauscher brings to the table either. I guess Hawaii ran the run and shoot so it would be hard to find a TE coach with Hawaii tie there.

I am not insisting we bring in a flock of Hawaii tie coaches… But a few would be nice I think…Tuioti is only Hawaii alum.

  149. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:32 pm

    145. Enough teaching that Nevada still runs the Pistol.. And not the run and shoot…

  154. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:36 pm

Rolo is good, but not a mix with Chow.

Ault and Rolo was good combo.

Ault was secure in his job and had some horses to back him up.

Chow on the other hand, was a new deer in the headlights, head coach……….for the first time in 40+ years

  155. jeezy33 October 28, 2013 2:38 pm

155… Well please explain to me how Tommy Lee and Chow was a great combo… and Aaron Price and Chow… and Jordan Wynn and Chow… Im sure you can come up with great reasons…
No matter what happens week in and week out, some people are just so stubborn that they won’t ever change their views..

  156. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:41 pm

Never said Tommy Lee was. Nor Price, nor even Wynn.

I spoke to Lee. Nice guy. Came out of retirement to help Chow. They didnt know each other that closely.

I think Price’s hire was a favor to Pops Price. Pops and Chow was bestest friends.

Wynn is just there by default.

  157. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:44 pm

    jeezy.

Chow would never have taken Rolo.

He had to “clean house” and bring in his “own” guys.

BUT, never having done it before……….well……..you see the results.

let me remind everyone….Donovan didnt want to hire Chow…….

  158. Warrior Dave October 28, 2013 2:46 pm

    #155,

Ault did hire Rolo but if you think he let Rolo call the offense… Haha good one! The thinking was to groom to be Aults replacement. Ault wouldn’t loosen up and evolve the pistol like was promised. Aults last year was a disaster under his system and was forced to ” retire.”

Rolo would be a great understudy to JJ for 2-3 years.

UHfan808, I appreciate the time, effort, and passion you put into your posts, but this is not a business, corporation, stress class, class course, and what have you. These are sports fans and in particular UH fans.

Many are just venting their frustrations and dislikes. Many are also sharing the love for the Warriors. Naturally you want to change those that are not like you or the Tsaikos but no can.

Most everyone here speak their mind and if it bothers someone then that someone can voice their disapproval or not pay attention. You take the former approach but that’s not really going to change how they act or what they write. At least we get to see differing opinions, which I like.

Everyone is different and you can definitely tell by the ignorant, funny, duh, intelligent, eloquent, and fluent posts. Such diversity on this blog. Many of the posts are informative and others, well, you can’t take them personally. No use getting all futless and aggravated over words on a blog.

If the team was winning, some will still find fault or ways to better improve the team, it’s never ending. The team is just in a downward spiral, sooner or later they will spiral back up. In the meantime, just enjoy the ride.

Rolo would be good with JJ.

Not sure how much he learned from Ault.

  161. primo123 October 28, 2013 2:55 pm

My contention…………we just need to play more “creampuffs”…….if we were 5-2, most could grumble that we played a weak ass schedule, etc.

BUT, we wouldn’t have coaches going after each other, or fans booing, or wanting the head coach to retire.

I’m not saying Div2 teams…..but we need a few more, South Alabama’s on our schedule.

    Its perception and wins-losses

  162. ichibun October 28, 2013 3:00 pm

130; amen. eh ya’ll. I am still impressed with some of the young talent,
LB’s-DB’s-WR’s-DSJ. Would be nice to see the D take on a “no prisoners”
mentality, and CG may have coined a phase that might happen with the
    young WR’s corp.
Maybe the band can play “Super Freak” for the freak show too….jus tinkin’
    Still a fan….

  166. wasabi October 28, 2013 3:25 pm

155- agree. Don’t think Rolo would have meshed with Chow. Do hope he comes back when the debacle is over….also agree it’s a good idea to schedule a couple of cream puff teams at beginning of season to increase chances of winning at least couple games. If that wasn’t the case last season would have ended 1-11 instead of 3-9.

  167. primo123 October 28, 2013 3:28 pm

Sorry to say………..for the MWC, the creampuffs started with Colorado St………

guess we need creamier cream puffs, if there is any…..

Ben Jay would have a hard time explaining that change in the schedule.

All we can wish for is “body bag” games to get in the black.

  171. Jonj October 28, 2013 3:33 pm

Warrior Dave. Yea I’m going to give him a pass this year. The OLine hasn’t played bad since MWC play. I’m not so sure naole is running the show on OLine also. I have seen one set of the same OLine starting yet. So like I said once they get Alil more consistent on the starters.

    Poly mom who’s your son??

  172. Jonj October 28, 2013 3:39 pm

Also I don’t blame all the OLine for he lack of running game. For some reason chow is behind on the run game. JJ and Mack/rolo found out that it’s better to run out of the pistol so the RB can get a head of steam while running. Almost all of chows runs are out of the shotgun and take too long to develope. That and the fact that lakalaka isn’t a speed back is hurting us.

  173. primo123 October 28, 2013 3:42 pm

Even Coach Miano noted in last night’s show, that UH has a tendency to run on first down. So teams are gearing up to stop the run.

    So predictable.

  174. Warrior Dave October 28, 2013 3:56 pm

    #173,

I consider DSJ a speed back. He has been successful running between the tackles. I’m not a coach but I have to guess the oline isn’t opening holes for him to run through. I don’t know if he can run outside the tackles as I don’t think its in UH playroom to run wide. I haven’t seen it yet. CSU was pressuring and sacked SS on the last series rushing 3! That tells me our 5 oline couldn’t block the 3 guys.

  175. Jonj October 28, 2013 4:15 pm

Like I said warrior Dave the play takes too Long to develope. Dsj is a one cut speed back. But becuz the play takes too long to develope his speed doesn’t help him. I’m not saying our OLine is great or anything but they aren’t doing too bad. And like primo said chows tendancy is to run on first and the opposing team gears up against us. It’s not hard to game plan us. Take away the run on first stop the short to intermediate pass on 2nd and take away the intermediate on 3rd. Only thing that leaves us with is the vertical pass. Not good when our best play is a long pass when none of our QBs have great accuracy and pray for our guy to win jump balls

  176. Jonj October 28, 2013 4:17 pm

And in 3rd n long situations I feel like majority of the time chows main play is the draw.

  177. omilu October 28, 2013 4:23 pm

    Tee it up

  178. question for answers please October 28, 2013 4:37 pm

i like our young talent, but it seems that they are not ready yet. they are not being coached up. let some seniors show by experience.

  179. NotNasti October 28, 2013 4:38 pm

We need the QBs to get back under center, to allow our backs to pick up some speed prior to getting the ball. In the shotgun formation, the back receives the ball while standing flat-footed, abreast of the QB. We started the season under center, and went to the shotgun formation when when TG got hurt.

  180. Jonj October 28, 2013 4:42 pm

180 notnasti I think if TG is in get back under center. But if SS is in go int the pitsol it Also allows the RB to pick up some speed and I think SS does best not under center.

  181. NotNasti October 28, 2013 4:43 pm

Or line up in the pistol. Jonj, correct.

  182. cocobean October 28, 2013 4:49 pm

jonj. JJ and Mack ran out of the shotgun with the QB 7-71/2 yds behind the center and the RB to a side of the QB. Chow has run out of the pistol way more than the other two combined. For the most part Chow has the QB at pistol depth,4-41/2yds behind the center. The RB has lined up 3yds behind the QB(true pistol), 3yd behind and a yard to the left of the QB, and also to aside ofthe QB.

  183. primo123 October 28, 2013 4:52 pm

When line was a sieve, SS under center didnt work, SS not enough time to set his feet and find receivers.

So they adjusted and put him in shotgun, which suits him more.

SS not the fleetest of foot.

  184. primo123 October 28, 2013 5:03 pm

for the runner to get yards, the line has to block and open holes.

  185. Ikaika Kapena October 28, 2013 5:07 pm

  186. Jonj October 28, 2013 5:16 pm

Cocoabeen JJ at smu started running out of he pistol a year after he got there and Mack/rolo in the last 2 years started running out of the pistol or what did they call it… Keko?? Mack/rolo in the first year with Alex green racked up our first 1000yd rusher in I forget 20yrs or so.

  191. obachan October 28, 2013 5:56 pm

I’m not speculating on whether Chow will leave or stay at UH but the best advice I ever heard on hiring a head coach at UH was spoken by Dick Tomey on the Leahy & Leahy TV show several weeks ago. Tomey postulated that UH will never be able to compete year in & year out in the recruiting wars for cream of the crop Div 1 talent with the perennial powerhouse schools. Therefore UH needs the type of head coach who is able to teach and tweak out the maximum potential in each recruit as not every coach has the skill and insight to do that. Tomey used as an example Dino Babers, former UH football player and now head coach at Eastern Illinois Univ. He’s doing a marvelous job there working with the talent level that he’s got and producing wins. I think that is a realistic & common sense goal for UH to shoot for.

  192. Shoko October 28, 2013 6:11 pm

  194. cocobean October 28, 2013 6:53 pm

jonj. I agree when Rolo took over as OC we did run more out of a hybrid pistol can’t say I’ve kept track of what JJ is doing. But you can’t say Chow is running out of the SG. Chow will change the alignment of the RB from 3 yds behind the QB to 3yrs behind and a yd to the left of the QB, to a yd or so the the left of the QB. But the QB still lines up at pistol depth.

  195. gobows October 28, 2013 7:04 pm

151 try all season. There hasnt been a rb running play designed to go outside. Lakalaka kicked a few out on good reads, but most of the time the rbs are trying to go through a wall. That makes play calling look dumb.

  196. kapakahi October 28, 2013 7:13 pm

    #192,

Heard that……Dino would definitely be interested.

  197. kapakahi October 28, 2013 7:22 pm

    #196,

The reason why UH not even trying to run any stretch perimeter plays for St. Juste is…….because would need better blocking from OTs and especially the TEs.

  201. oneseason October 28, 2013 7:55 pm

Wow … one third of UH offensive plays against Colorado State resulted in almost no net gain. With passing bringing in 6.8 yards per attempt, and 18 point behind entering the 4th quarter, rushing attempts still amounted to about a third off the offensive plays … 10 rushing attempts for 19 yards.

29 rush attempts for 32 yards = 1.1 yards per rush attempt
First Quarter: 10 attempts for 0 yards
Second Quarter: 5 attempts for 2 yards
Third Quarter: 4 attempts for 11 yards
Fourth Quarter: 10 attempts for 19 yards

57 pass attempts for 386 yards = 6.8 yards per pass attempt
First Quarter: 9 attempts for 80 yards
Second Quarter: 18 attempts for 129 yards
Third Quarter: 9 attempts for 17 yards
Fourth Quarter: 21 attempts for 160 yards

I also noticed there were a few “hospital” balls thrown by our qb. Those are high, slow reaching passes that force the receiver to leap straight up to try to make a reception, but the slow pass make the receiver a candidate to take a ride to the hospital. By the time it the pass takes to reach the receiver, and with the receiver leaping and stretching for the ball, the defender has enough time to “bring it”. Fortunately, I don’t think any of our receivers were injured in any of those plays.

  205. papajoe2 October 28, 2013 8:21 pm

    oops – it.

  206. Old School Dave October 28, 2013 8:35 pm

Just speculating, but I think that if Art Briles is offered the Texas job (if the Longhorn admin can get off of their high horses), Dino Babers could be in line for the Baylor HC job (earn something like $2 million/yr compared to maybe $500K at UH??). Dino’s mom didn’t raise some fool.

Hawaii -21.5 pt dog to Utah State…

    (-_-)

  212. Bumby October 28, 2013 9:10 pm

So let’s get real. UH will never be a top 20 to 25 team year in and year out. Coach Chow on the sidelines is too much into himself and does not get into the pot to stir up his players. He looks grouchy on top of that and do they want to play their hearts out for him and the school. The quarterback and his receivers hardly talk to each other on the sidelines to make for a better chance to succeed.

If the players are better than the Mack and JJ era then something in the formula is not working. I will say this after being 0-9 or 0-10 UH will be looking for another coach. Either way the money situation will be in jeopardy. Keep Chow and season tickets for next year could drop by 2 to 3 thousand or more. (Approximate dollar equivalent to his salary) With a new coach bringing renewed enthusiasm season tickets may not drop and maybe increase.

  213. Mytake October 28, 2013 9:20 pm

“CHALLENGE THEM”, give it to whoever chickened out of the Ohio State game. Norm Chow has got to have some sort of fat ego to think the fans were booing the players. I was at the game and everyone around me was pissed at the coaches. When they called timeout after letting seconds run off the clock it made it seem like they didn’t know what they were doing. If he wanted to run out the clock then why did he call timeout. It made no sense!

  214. wafan October 28, 2013 9:27 pm

    Tee it up!!!

  215. Mytake October 28, 2013 9:33 pm

And another thing I want to say is when the players came off the bus, the fans went to the fence and cheered them on. The fans that were there care about the team. The players, coaches and media guys don’t sit in the rafters and see the frustration that goes on up there. My section had a guy get up off his seat slamming the seat repeatedly and stomping the flloor. The guy in front of me gave the seat next to him a good crack. Believe me when I say the fans are taking a toll just like the coaches and players and, it’s not because of the $8.25 beer!!

  216. Warrior Dave October 28, 2013 10:31 pm

    #192,

Dino Babers may be coaching lights out but EIU is a lower division school. Can he recruit against D1 schools being 2800 miles away from the continent? Please compare apples to apples people.

  217. Warrior Dave October 28, 2013 10:35 pm

    #197,

Of course Dino would be interested. It’s a promotion to D1, raise in pay, at better competition and a chance to coach where he played. But can he recruit at this level? Big difference.

  218. Jonj October 28, 2013 11:38 pm

Warrior Dave… I don’t know if he an recruit top level… But if he can coach a d2 team beating San Diego badly at home and almost defeating unbeaten NIU. Then I think we will be fine.

  221. masa fujioka October 29, 2013 3:29 am

Chow’s body language on the sidelines is one of obvious disgust with his team, and fully reflects what the fans in the stand are feeling. He should probably be upstairs just to get his bad attitude away from the players.
