After last night’s homecoming loss, when yet another comeback literally fell incomplete, the Rainbow Warriors are left to ponder:
• Sean Schroeder or Taylor Graham?
• The Warriors feel the need to run, but the running game needs help, mostly likely a set-up from the passing game.
• The Warriors have struggled exiting the intermission. On the opening drives of the third quarter, they average 3.4 plays for 6.0 yards and 1 minute, 14 seconds of possession time. Their overall third-quarter average is 5 minutes, 47 seconds.
• There are health concerns about defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii, who exited with an elbow injury. Bubba Poueu-Luna and TJ Taimatuia both did not play because of late-week injuries.

Graham played horribly against USC, then showed some improvement (in his play, not overall team performance) in his next two starts before he got injured. SS has not led this team to victories. I know he is not the only factor, but one nonetheless. Graham hasn’t gotten a fair shot to come back. Sure, put him in cold and yank him after his first mistake.
He needs to figure out how to get his mistakes excused like SS does.
I say Graham; more upside. Moves better in the pocket; keeps his eyes downfield. Given more reps widda receivers, improvement should sur”pass” the level possible with Schroeder.
That said, enthusiasm is something for which one may need to dig deeper to find but just take heart with the effort being put forth on the field from start to finish.
It is disheartening to see the frustration on the faces of the players as they come off the field after those “shoot yourself in the foot” moments but it’s hard not to pull for them in the end when they keep coming soooo close.

I think we have to accept that we are who we have been: any quarterback is going to arrive at the same place because of the O-line, the defense, the coaching, injuries, et cetera.
The good news, is it is extremely hard to keep losing despite the best efforts of our coaching staff. The odds, luck, opponent’s mistakes and so on have to fall on our side at some point.
I cant believe how much pressure colorado state was getting on hawaii’s final drive though Sean Schroder was getting hit on every play with them rushing only 3 guys
Maybe Chow can have his old mentor, LeVel Edwards give the team a pep talk when they travel to Utah prior to their game with USU this week. Problem is that most players probably don’t know he Edwards is.

The current inability UH football teams to qualify for bowl games is rare in itself, but the current situation is particularly bad because were weren’t even close last year and this year risks being as bad.

tyler kicked the ball perfectly straight on his missed fg. too bad he was kicking from the hash, which is outside the uprights. somebody should teach him about angles. his approach is flawed.
The offensive line coach, Chris Naeole is a succinct example of the flip side of the adage, “If you can’t do, teach.” Meaning, his 11 years as an NFL coach don’t necessarily mean he can coach (teach) young men how to be an effective offensive line player. So many local reporters were fawning over his hiring, but thus far, the outcomes of his work are clearly poor. Lest you think this is a player talent issue, many of the efforts this year are simply poor preparation for the defenses faced.
For all you teachers out there, this may be a strange way of saying, your skills and abilities are quite valuable because we can clearly see what happens when they are not available to a person in a teaching position.

chow has forgotten more offense then all of us…and it shows. they have 1 (rb) running play, and thats straight ahead. no sweeps, no jumbo packages, no running from under center. their running plays take too long to develop and majority of the time the backs lack the ability to kick it outside. they should just throw a bomb on every play, get better chance at moving the ball.
what was going on with tg’s 1st play after a month on the sides. 5 wide and all going too long. that has stupid written all over it. if they wanted to test the shoulder, let him run a qb draw.

I say screw the tight end. Sorry. Put Gant, and Haynes on the outside, Harding & Stutz on the inside, and go with that. Pop in a tape from circa 2006/2007 and lettum run those plays. Those 4 right there are the best 4 some since that era, and yes, I mean all at the same time on the field (guarans get one wise bugga goin say one from dis team one from dat). Our O line us atrocious. Can’t even stop a nose bleed. Yes, play calling was suspect but the line gotta block, period. What I’m saying is even the best play calling gets us squat if the O line can’t block. We used to play almost a full game with only 4 wr’s.. Why this regime seems to want to keep rotating guys every couple plays is beyond me. King, kirkwood, kemp, anguay, evans, they’ll have their time. Shoot, make like Boise & design specific plays to those guys’ strength. But the rotation reward does not appear to exceed the risk so I say quit doing that. Heck play the tight end if u please but then ditch the back cuz our rb’s aren’t finding holes between the tackles and only St. Juste seems to have enough speed back there to get to the edge.
I think we need to abandon the run to set up the pass mentality for now and this platooning of QBs. Lets not kid ourselves that opposing defenses are going nuts trying to figure out how to defend 3 QBs. Pick one and nuff, pau, stick wid’um already.
The O-line didn’t do great at pass protection, better than run blocking. 2 yards of rushing in the first half is just obscene. Overall O-line play last night was horrid though. Is it coaching or personnel? Let’s air it out, go 4-wide more often and see what we can do.
Our goal should still be to win every game the rest of the season, but I’d like to see Graham get the start from this point on to give him the experience for next year. Outside of that int, which I blame on dumb play calling, he seemed to do ok last night.

I don’t agree about Chris Gant. He drops a lot of balls and he needs to fight and hold on to the one he catches. I don’t think its a learning moment when he drops a ball or gets it stripped from him.

Balko, I agree with you 1000%. But I’m giving him till next season to prove himself. Let’s see who he recruits to build up the oline. The media reporters weren’t the ones all gaga about its hire. It’s the fans who don’t understand teaching.
What kills me is why we go no huddle, but make ZERO adjustments at the LOS based on how the D lines up. Try watch, we get generally set (guys moving into position, etc.), while the qb gets the play, and once the play has been called, the qb calls for a snap within the next few seconds.. Often with plenty of time left on the play clock! Last nights qb (SS) didn’t even bother to LOOK at the secondary before taking the snap! Did this all night! Maybe not every play but isn’t that the point? Do it every play regardless of the play call? Not a single audible, and incredulously throwing into double coverage with guys running wide open against single coverage. This ain’t the NFL where the db’s are all professionals.. There has to be a weakness in the secondary, and should be scouted as such, but no apparent strategy other than run the play as it was called. This is my biggest problem with the coaching of this staff.

One more thing I love is when we go no huddle, line up, pause and look to the sidelines for a play. Would be cool if we were moving the ball but it only throws our timing off resulting in offsides.

32. I dont know how u can say u will wait till he gets his recruits.. If you watch Hawaii play now, its not a talent disparity as to why we lose… We have silly turn overs that lead to points to the opposing team. We produce unforced stupid penalties week in and week out. Not a recruits issue. Majority of all Hawaii problems are mental mistakes which fall back on coaching…. Anytime Hawaii tries to make a offensive substitution at QB, a negative play happens. Good coached teams dont have that problem constantly..

39. Moocher: I sit in the same section as Marcus Malepeai’s family. You have frustrated fans mixed in with the players’ families. Shigematsu’s relatives were directly in front of me. So you have (drunk) frustrated fans taking out their anger by yelling at the coaches and the team. Families tend to take exception to that kind of behavior, especially when they see their sons playing their hearts out. Remember UH QB Glenn Freitas wading into the stands to come to his family’s aid? While the cops were trying to sort things out, Malepeai saw what was going on and had to be restrained by his teammates. If not, he would have jumped into the stands and all hell would have broken loose. I must say that the defense played much better after that episode. I hardly ever criticize the team, as I’m not on the field, not putting in the time in the weight room and on the practice field, but I would NEVER criticize the team inside the stadium, because you never know who you might offend.
Not that it would have made a difference, but did anyone notice that after the second to the last play was ruled an incompletion, the game clock that showed 7 seconds, was started prior to the snap, and was at 2 seconds at the time of the snap.
The clock kept running during the Frenso St come back despite player going out of bounds.
Player support shows up in the form of families dressing for game day with the family name printed boldly across the back (and sometimes front) of t-shirts.
Anyone who disparages a player thus represented does so at his/her own peril.

45. I see. O line play hasn’t been that bad so Naeole is the least of my worries I think. Every position I thought would be the weakest links have improved more than I expected and areas I thought we were fine at are a lot worse than I expected…
Everyone expected SS to be bad. He’s been okay. Good for the deep ball. Weak on the intermediate throws and passes over the middle. His throws on the screens take way too long to get there allowing the D to react to screens. Still inconsistent over the course of a game.. But overall, SS exceeded my expectations.. TOs still haunt though.
Lakalaka has regressed in my opinion. He doesn’t have the ability to cut in holes or set up blocks to cut it outside…. His runs up the middle basically get stuffed everytime because he is strictly north/south without the burst. Our best blocking RB so I can see why he is in the game. I still prefer more DSJ.
LB play has been awful. I thought we were going to be strong but aside from JGW, LB play has been poor. Laurel effective on pass rushing situations. Not good in coverage. Julian Gener is missed a lot.
Our CB play has been pretty bad… Too much big plays given up and tackling is suspect. Opposing teams can run cross patterns all day on us and we have trouble stopping it.
Overall, I like the talent on this team. Lot of young guys contributing like Trayvon, DSJ, JGW, Nequan, Marrell, Kemp(last night), Kennedy T, and Kwamane Bowens. Our coaching staff has failed in every aspect of the game though. When your coaches and leadership fails, your team doesn’t win..
UNLV beat Nevada yesterday (now 5-2, 2nd place). Nevada’s new chrome helmets (from a donor) didn’t seem to help. UH seems to have a tendency of turning around the fortunes of “other” teams. USU has a true freshman QB who replaced Chucky Keaton. I’m afraid that he may also have a breakout game vs UH.
What frustrates me? We have seen them play excellent in all phases of the game at different times during the season. When we see them playing that same way for an entire game, hitting on all cylinders, they can play with anybody. We just need to see a complete game. Still a fan, and love the Warriors. More than anything, I want so see them win for their own sake. It’s in them.

54. d1shima: IMO the guy getting into it with the Malepeai ohana put his family at peril. He was there with his wife, infant child, toddler and gramps. As they were being escorted by HPD out of the stands, gramps had a hard time making it up the stairs.

It doesn’t matter what anybody SAYS. There is no excuse for being attacked. The guy was probably drunk, an idiot, or just doesn’t know how to shut his mouth. But the families of players need to show restraint. That makes them no better.

why do we keep running up the middle; when they keep stuffing it? at least we should do swing passes to St. Juste and have him go outside; or do more screen passes to offset their strong pass rush (think I only saw one screen pass). why don’t we do man in motion prior to the snap to see what kind of defense they are doing? where are the trick plays; pass from a RB or a fake sweep with a pass back to the other side (to someone who can either pass downfield or run it).

there’s no problem in letting tg throw the long pass. its the same like saying in short yardage teams may take out their speedster and put in the bruiser. some teams on ultra-long field goals may use a different kicker.
the team needs wins and SS has the best chance to get those wins.
I do agree, next year will be a problem because the QB will low on experience.
if you are chow, what do you do…listen to the cries of fans to get a win (let SS play) or develop a QB and risk almost certain losses along with risking the QB getting injured for next year because the line can’t protect well.
playing SS is the right thing to do. its going to be up to TG to get it all together and be ready for next season. i wouldn’t worry too much about next season. for sure chow will have talent all over the field to give TG everything he needs to succeed.
the hard part is getting through the season. it’ll all come together 100% guaranteed 🙂

I understand what you present. I’m just not convinced that SS gives us the best chance to win. He hasn’t. Period. Before TG got hurt, the entire offense was playing poorly, yet he still showed signs of improvement. SS has come in and played tough but has not won. So why doesn’t the starter who got hurt get his job back? Now that the offense plays a bit better, it would be nice to see how TG does.
It’s whatever at this point though. No point in me whining about it. I’ve done that enough for one day. If its gonna be SS, fine. I just don’t agree.

#82 Agree, there are fans in which I am one, and then there are what I call the “blind followers” who think that a 0 – 7 start and a 53-9 loss are “building blocks” for the future. LOL. Yes, I know they didn’t get beat by that score yesterday, but if it wasn’t for Colo ST’s second and third string put in late, then it might have been.

Long day yesterday and today. Just got done putting a tarp over the garage, in prep of any rains. Got a little leak somewhere up there. Gotta get the temporary fix up there until we can redo it.
Echoing what some have said throughout the season, as well as today…
We’ve been close in every game, but have had certain problems pop up at the most inopportune times. We are just a couple of plays away from an opposite season. Just gotta put it all together consistently, and keep the penalties out, especially the bonehead, coach-related ones.
Gotta have faith and keep your heads in the game. Can still close out the season with a strong run.
they should move ben clarke to guard, he seems to be one of the more aggressive (tougher) linemen. its a waste to use him at center, just like john estes, most plays he goes against air and not able to help the outside.
don’t know if its technique or toughness, but the o line sure loses more often than wins.
Babo. Other than part of the FSU game, all the teams kept their normal defensive rotation throughout the game. I don’t know how you can say the comebacks were against 2nd – 3rd teamers.

Another loss I put on the coaches. I preface what i am about to say by saying I think our staff puts in more hours on the job than any other staff in the MWC. They’re the hardest working group there is.
Having said that I don’t think this staff knows how to win and it starts from the top. The existing team culture is just not condusive to winning. An old coaching adage is player mistakes – mental and physical errors are teachable moments. It’s part of the coach’s job to have players learn from their mistake(cause and consequences) and not make the same mistake again. It seems the players are not learning from their mistakes and continue to make them. What makes the situation worst is the coaches are not learning from their own mistakes.
Time for Chow to instill into his team’s culture more accountability and consistency. He should slow down expanding the play book. He should concentrate on getting better execution on the plays he already has then add in some new wrinkles.
I don’t know how people can say the o-line is the least of the worries when sean shroeder was getting pressured and sacked off a three man rush.
it’ll all come together. my concern is that when the team does start to when will people show up and sell out the stadium consistently. it didn’t happen during colt’s years.
i know why the team is doing bad. you see, UH doesn’t really want PPV, so if they put a bad product on the field there won’t be any PPV contracts. THEN UH can make a better deal.

Probably not reasonable to expect Naeole to bring in top-notch OL recruits for the next 2014 recruiting class given the way the season is going……along with the down year for quality local HS OL prospects.
Since only Naeole’s first year as the OL coach……and with recruiting, will probably take at least another season to see how the OL develops……given that Naeole is the 3rd different OL coach in past 3 seasons for next season’s junior & senior OL returnees (Afusia, Dew, Loyd, Shigematsu; except Clarke).
Hearing that true frosh OG Dejon Allen and OT Elijah Tupai (both redshirting this season) should both be in the heat of the competition to be part of the OL rotation next 2014 season.

The fact that UH has never really been able to sell out Aloha Stadium consistently, even during the Colt years, is not a knock on the fans or the program. It simply proves that a 50,000 seat venue is too large for University to be expected to fill. Comparable programs to UH are more in the 30,000-40,000 seat range. Boise St. and Nevada are like 37,000.

So why don’t we just sell 30,000 seats for the game and configure the remaining seats or a section where it becomes something that can earn money.
would businesses be interested in buying space on some sort of seat jacket where the seats are partially covered with some sort of fitted jacket or attached pockets facing the rear with a business name and particulars on it? where a business can leave calling cards and fans can simply take a few. yeah i know we fishing. but sometimes fishing in waters no one went to can get you the best fish 🙂
perhaps pizza hut flyers or things like that…and of course they’d pay to put their flyer in the seat jacket. $1 more is $1 more.
stadium already knows what seats were bought so they know where to place the adverts (i know, the last minute walk-ups)…if i see a 10% discount coupon or something from starbucks good up till Jan 31 2014 in the pocket of a jacket on the seat in front of me…i’m taking as many as i can get and give it to people for christmas…becos i’m the moocher 🙂

JMHO that the primary reason for the continued problems with the OL isn’t because of the talent…..but because of the musical chairs with the OL Coach position……3 different OL coaches in the past 3 seasons……which hasn’t helped with the continual development of the current OL players. Keeping Naeole as the OL Coach will help to establish some continuity…..that hasn’t been there the past 3 seasons……towards developing the talent of the newer OL players.
Unlike offensive skill positions where physical talents can prevail……for example, Kirkwood, Kemp, Haynes all 1st year players at WR), OL prospects (whether from high school or JC ranks) usually need to be developed through coaching in order to ready to play on this level. Other Ben Clarke & Mike Milovale, not many 1st year player (whether from high school or JC ranks) ever started on the OL……so probably just not reasonable to expect much from any new 1st year OL recruits next season…..whether from Hawaii, Samoa or the mainland.
OL talent is typically developed……through coaching……and not just recruited.
Recruits should go to UT San Antonio instead…we suck
