Band of brothers

This week — and for the rest of the season — the Rainbow Warriors will be wearing a green “Play Hard” wrist band.

The players wore a similar band last year. The re-issue is symbolic of each players’ renewed pledge to the team.

* * * * *

It all begins up front. Fittingly, this week’s co-captains are defensive end Beau Yap and offensive guard Kody Afusia.

* * * * *

The “Pit” is the sideline area where injured players work out during practices. Some of the drills — pulling golf carts or weighted sleds — are more physically demanding than the actual practices. This season, receiver Allen Sampson has spent every practice in the Pit. After recovering from two ACL surgeries, he has been sidelined this year because of a torn hamstring. It is a painful reminder that football is a sport with health risks.

    Folks up so early!

The way football is played today…if I had a young son, don’t think I would encourage him to play football. So many of my men friends who played football suffer from so many medical conditions and aches and pains.

Go Warriors! Lets win one for Hawaii!!!

  8. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2013 6:15 am

My alarm goes off. I wake up, look at the cell phone, and it’s only 4:55 a.m.
The alarm actually was part of a dream.
    I hate morning practices.

  9. PolyMom October 22, 2013 6:25 am

Sorry ST. I know those early wake up calls. At least at that time there should be no traffic.

If you have time read USA Today’s story on Grambling. It sounds just like Hawaii’s problems. But at least our team suits up and shows up! It’s actually very sad situation there.

    So is it Samson now?

When was the last time we played the Rams? Must have been decades ago.

Aloha Kakou! Good to be back in Gotham, next week, back home in da islands…

  14. wasabi October 22, 2013 6:44 am

Shouln’t those injured players be rehabbing in a way less likely to cause more injury?

  15. Slugger October 22, 2013 7:01 am

    Good morning, gang!

Sorry to hear about Allan’s hamstring.

    GO WARRIORS!

  16. DaveLetterMan October 22, 2013 7:04 am

    ST
That’s better than hearing the alarm in a dream and then waking up late for work cuz the alarm was for real.

  20. RedZone October 22, 2013 8:05 am

    Play Hard.

  21. Former UH Athlete October 22, 2013 8:05 am

Early Offshore books have Hawaii as (+5) underdogs to CSU.

CSU is an erratic team…. some weeks they look pretty good, some weeks they look absolutely awful. Very difficult to predict how they play. Bad losses to Pac12 bottom feeder Colorado and a declining Tulsa program (3 years removed from Todd Graham’s departure). A somewhat respectable showing vs Alabama, and big wins over UTEP and they blew out a pretty good Wyoming in Laramie.

    Crazy stat of 2013….

Hawaii is #4 in the nation for Tackles for loss. 8.8 TFL per game average

Just basically means the defense is making a lot of good plays, but giving up a lot of bad plays as UH is really bad in most other defensive statistics.

  22. Former UH Athlete October 22, 2013 8:22 am

UH needs Brendan Dailey to step up the rest of the season. As ST mentioned a few days ago, he’s really cooled off after a good start to the year. Same with Tavita Woodard.

MWC teams have been running at Yap and Woodard more often as they have been struggling shedding blocks. Maybe more situational subs… more DTs on probable run downs, more pass rushers on probably pass downs.

This is when having a good stat guy on staff that will dig beyond the boxscore and look at CSU’s play-by-play of each game to find tendencies in play calling. Need to find run/pass ratios for 1st down & 3rd and short.

What’s their tendency on 2nd and long? Do they run/throw short to make 3rd down manageable or do they try to pick up the whole yardage?

Any tendency CSU shows can be used to help set the defensive personnel or defensive playcalling.

  23. Inyoface October 22, 2013 8:29 am

Pretending you’re behind 14 points the entire game will help out.

  24. (Jesse)James October 22, 2013 8:40 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Hope all have a great day today!!!

    Play Hard!!!

One Team. One Game. One Goal.

  25. primo123 October 22, 2013 9:04 am

Win or Lose…..Jus Go to the Game…………….!!

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid October 22, 2013 9:09 am

Warriors band together for a victory! This is the week! Play hard!

Beau Yap has been a beast, to pardon the cliche. Remembering his HS play at KSK, he was always a high speed, high motor defender. Glad to see he and Afusia as Captains this week!

    Heal up Warriors.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  27. primo123 October 22, 2013 9:18 am

Attendance suffers, because fans have an alternative to watching it live in person.

They can watch it live, on their 75 inch Sony LED HDTV, while sitting in their favorite recliner, no line to the bathroom, no unruly fans, no rain, no parking stress, $13 for a 12 pack of Heiniken, AND…..if the game gets boring, they can DVR it and watch the rest of it in the morning…………….

    Jus sayin…..

  28. jimmy the lock October 22, 2013 9:39 am

Who needs symbology to play hard? Just play hard, it should be automatic.

HDTV, it’s almost like being there. Slow mo’ and replays the best.

  29. Ipu Man October 22, 2013 9:43 am

Good choice for this week’s co-captains, defensive end Beau Yap and offensive guard Kody Afusia. And for the rest of the team, remember, Aloha Stadium, good or bad, is YOUR house.
Protect it. And to the injured Rainbow Warriors, I pray for your recovery and after football life…Everybody, including us Tsaikos, live like there is no tomorrow…nor alarm clocks.

  30. cocobean October 22, 2013 9:55 am

The team has been playing hard. Time for them to play to win….no mo mistakes, baby.

  31. 808souljah October 22, 2013 9:59 am

    Is Jackson hurt?

  32. 808WarriorFan October 22, 2013 10:01 am

    Sampson is really injury prone…..

  33. jimmy the lock October 22, 2013 10:01 am

Ipu Man, I wish I could live like there is no tomorrow, then I wouldn’t be working, just cruising and having fun, making trouble, taking risks, but reality sets in and I have to work, pay the bills, support the family, and plan for the future. C’est la vie.

  34. Warrior Dave October 22, 2013 10:44 am

    Dear Lord,

Please let this be the week that the Warriors win.

  35. A-House October 22, 2013 10:54 am

If the Jets can do it, so can the Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. SteveM October 22, 2013 11:04 am

    Good morning everyone!

“Band of Brothers” — a fitting title with ST not just being “pun-ny”. I recall the television series and DVD set of the same title. My impression: in the end, they were not fighting for ideologies or to save the world. They were fighting for each other in battle.

    Go Rainbow Warriors!!!

  37. NotNasti October 22, 2013 11:13 am

If the Giants can do it, so can the Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. primo123 October 22, 2013 11:26 am

    If Jacksonville can do it…………………….errrr….

  39. Moocher October 22, 2013 11:43 am

i remember when we’d stay up late to watch the game after the news. even if we knew who won, we’d still watch the game.

just curious, with Internet and smart tv’s, can’t UH stream their own games on their own Internet channel delayed a few hours or a day or two like it was before with tv before. I think if they did that, along with having a chat feature where perhaps a GA or coach would attend to the replay for a time and chat with fans would be awesome. something like this can be used as a marketing tool as well.

i think a similar format would be justin.tv where people watch a show and chat at the same time.

  40. jeezy33 October 22, 2013 11:45 am

    37. Is Josh Freeman playing for Colorado St? If so, Hawaii might win

  41. Kekoa October 22, 2013 11:54 am

    Greetings Tsaiko Villagers!

Starting to get my groove on for Warrior football at home this weekend. My boys keep playing hard, so it’s my job to just be a supportive fan.

    GO WARRIORS!

  42. A-House October 22, 2013 12:05 pm

new goal for this blog: keep today under 100!

  43. primo123 October 22, 2013 12:54 pm

Congrats to Kolten Wong! made the World Series roster!!!

  44. Former UH Athlete October 22, 2013 12:56 pm

    23… and it’s the 4th quarter

  45. graham October 22, 2013 12:59 pm

Is allen s done at UH or is a medical red shirt possible?

  46. jimmy the lock October 22, 2013 1:04 pm

I second that, congrats to Shane Victorino and Kolten Wong. May the hottest team win.

  47. Former UH Athlete October 22, 2013 1:05 pm

37, 40 – Also if Frazier is coaching CSU. What the heck was he thinking starting Freeman AND throwing 53 times? No knowledge of playbook, no rapport with WRs, and didn’t have terminology to call audibles… He was setup to fail and he delivered. Didn’t help that he missed on a bunch of open receivers that he targeted.

I don’t think Ponder is a legit starter in the NFL, but he deserves better than what the Vikings are doing to him. If I were him or his agent, I would demand a trade or be released. There’s obviously no future in Minnesota for him and a bunch of teams need a QB to fill in for injured starters or desperately need a #2, and eventually compete for the starter job next year. He needs to go somewhere else and compete for a job.

  48. Wes'side Warrior October 22, 2013 1:09 pm

    Howzit Gang!

Dang, it seems that this week has been very busy! And it’s only Tuesday so far! Got things planned for every day this week, mainly school- and church-related stuff.

Let’s go, Warriorz! Put it all together, from first to final whistle! Let’s do this!

    Have a great day, everyone!

Got errands to run the rest of this day. Gotta fit a trip in to Palama Super in Waimalu sometime… oldest daughter wants some Korean grapes. Wait… let me take a nap first! Oh… no more time for that! Gun fun it!

  49. bowwar October 22, 2013 1:12 pm

With a torn hamstring is Sampson out for the year?

  50. gobows October 22, 2013 1:35 pm

    #22 fuha

Could that guy be a girl? Theres a wahine running the camera at the games.

  51. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2013 1:56 pm

Sampson was in full pads today, but, alas, it didn’t mean anything. He’s still in the Pit.
It’s unfortunate that he can’t stay healthy. I think he has enough credits to graduate in May. He still has a year of eligibility but I’m not sure what his plans are.

  52. Stephen Tsai October 22, 2013 1:58 pm

    Inyoface:
You might have a point. Schroeder does seem to play better when he wings it.
Actually, I think the lesson this season is the UH quarterback is most successful when he gets rid of the ball quickly. That applies to all four.

  53. clyde October 22, 2013 2:12 pm

Off the topic, but folks — particularly, we of the advanced age — should read Mike Tsai’s latest Incidental Lives column. Liked how he stepped aside, and let the story play out. Powerful piece.

  54. jimmy the lock October 22, 2013 3:26 pm

After what age is considered advanced?

  55. graham October 22, 2013 4:12 pm

too bad about allen. I was really excited for him, he could have been something special with that speed he had.

  56. al October 22, 2013 6:41 pm

too bad about Sampson not being able to get out of the blocks for just one whole season. these “pony-backs” take a pounding like everyone else, its just that they don’t have the mass and stature to endure the day in and day out grind.

    after all, “tsai’s matters”

  57. Think2Much October 22, 2013 6:47 pm

In the last two games, Fresno and UNLV, Schroeder shows fight and desire; trying to find a way to win. This is the kind of fire the team needs. Let their emotions raise the level of play but under focused control. And ultimately, its in the hands of the offense. Just gotta out score the other guys.

  58. oldtimer808 October 22, 2013 7:04 pm

#54 Jimmy the lock…..when you think like a fool

  59. oldtimer808 October 22, 2013 7:09 pm

LOL I never read Clyde’s post…..it is duly noted that an advanced age under Clyde’s post meaning guys like us who are pass an age considered young but if you put the context in a different light there are people at a young age who mumble and complain and think of only themselves and act like fools.

  60. oldtimer808 October 22, 2013 7:11 pm

I agree stop thinking and throw the throw the ball

  61. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 22, 2013 9:04 pm

I also agree that we should go 4-wide more often. Or in our case, at least once a game.

  62. Dino October 22, 2013 10:31 pm

no frozen junk poke from foodland or times supermarket for me this saturday for inner circle tailgating. i am gonna look for fresh, big $$ poke.

  63. PolyMom October 23, 2013 5:12 am

Good Morning! It’s cold, cold, cold here at the beach!

Got the girlie off to school…I think it’s criminal any classes should start at 6:45 in the morning. Finishing school at 9:00 in the evening. What happened to fun in high school? I guess you have to wait for college.

Was wondering any word of Coaches coming to Mira Costa High School? They had a huge win. My girlie said the kicker is awesome and we need him in Hawaii.
