Scrimmage to cap bye week

The Rainbow Warriors will close bye week with an extended scrimmage today.

* * * * *

There have been two interesting changes this week:

• Sean Shigematsu has been playing left guard on the No. 1 offensive line.

• Daniel Masifilo has moved to cornerback. He had an interception during yesterday’s team drills. “When the ball’s in the air, I’m a receiver again,” Masifilo said of playing corner.

* * * * * *

Interesting report that there is a projected shortfall between $300,000 and $800,000 in what UH estimated it would earn and what it now expects to earn in football ticket revenue this year.

Which brings us to this week’s theme: Why did UH turn down a $600,000 offer to play Colorado this weekend?

    Happy Bye Week! First again?

  2. HiFlyer October 18, 2013 5:31 am

    Good Morning

  3. HiFlyer October 18, 2013 5:32 am

    What time is the scrimmage?

  4. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2013 5:38 am

    HiFlyer:
    7:45ish?

  5. Haleakala October 18, 2013 5:38 am

Need to ask the AD to answer that question.

  6. Haleakala October 18, 2013 5:40 am

It has been warm in Japan. It’s just now starting to get cooler.

  7. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2013 5:45 am

    Haleakala:
I think for the most part, the AD has been doing a good job.
He’s working hard, trying his best, is transparent and has a plan.
But for all the budget stories, I found it odd to leave that amount of money on the table.
At some point in negotiations, it’s better to walk away with less than a goal than nothing at all.
    In my opinion.

  8. Slugger October 18, 2013 5:46 am

Good morning, gang! Happy Aloha Friday!

  9. pu'uwai October 18, 2013 5:53 am

    Aloha kakahiaka.

The Colorado game would have been good for the budget and the players as well…too bad.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but the Athletics Administration is paid to have foresight. Should’ve taken the Colorado game to “cut our losses.”

  15. kifi October 18, 2013 6:40 am

The AD was right to have turned down the game. He had good foresight. The team needed a break before the final run at a bowl bid. They need to rest up physically and mentally, and try to make a late run for a six win season. Besides, seven trips to the continent within a fifteen week span is just too many days on the road for serious college students. I’m sure the team will have to do it in the next few years. But it should be avoided if at all possible. School comes first

  18. kifi October 18, 2013 7:08 am

Although more likely than not, what probably happened is that thinking that he had leverage on the CU AD, Ben Jay took a hard stance in stance in negotiations. CU wasn’t playing nicely and Ben Jay walked away. What do you do? They offer 600 K, you say no we need 1.2 mil. iThey counter with 600 K, you say no we’ll need 1 mil. They counter with 600 K, you say 750 K is actually the lowest you are allowed to go to. They say no it’s 600 K. You say okay, unless you can do 700 K we’re out. You wait by the phone and they never call back. Ben Jay didn’t put his tail between his legs by being bullied by a PAC 12 school. He can walk around with his head high and his chest out. Such is life in big time college athletics.

  19. Former UH Athlete October 18, 2013 7:17 am

RE Not taking the CU game for financial purposes… Just proof that UH is a poorly run university, like many other state schools.

Too many politicians running the universities and not enough people with business sense.

  20. Inyoface October 18, 2013 7:17 am

$600k is a lot of money.

Good thing the basketball teams dont get invited to the big dance…because school comes first.

  22. John Fitzgerald Byers October 18, 2013 7:29 am

Colorado game would have been same time as Ohio State’s homecoming.

  23. gobows October 18, 2013 7:36 am

What is the price of a full ride 5 year scholarship?

No game = zero chance at a win.

    No game = no revenue.

In the off season, athletes want to get back onto the field/court. Cant wait for practice to start.

In season, athletes want to play games. Practice sucks.

  24. Boolakanaka October 18, 2013 7:48 am

    Ay-up Hawai’i, (traditional London saluation)

My sentiments support Kifi/15. While certainly an eye should be always placed to efficent and solvent financial management, the football team should not be viewed as a proverbial ATM for the greater needs of the athletic department. With its already hefty responsibilty of existing mainland travel, this man thinks it was both wise and prudent for Ben Jay, to protect the team, and not to miss any additional on-campus instruction.

While others think this as not being supportive of my alma mater, it has already been clearly delineated that UH ranks near the bottom of the country in its graduation of its male athletes, the more germane posit becomes, what is more important-additional revenue or a greater institutional emphasis on academics?

Be clear, this is not the exercise and folly of schadenfrude, i want both the university and players to thrive, but not at the expense of their education. Consequentially, I remain tethered to the notion that school trumps all, and all else, is a distinct second.

  25. Glenn October 18, 2013 7:50 am

If Sean is playing guard, would this be 7 games in a row with a different lineup?
Is Frank starting again at RT?
    Go Frank Go.

  26. Popololoco October 18, 2013 7:52 am

Here we are mid-way through the season and UH is already hemorrhaging money due to low attendance. You think this is bad, just imagine how bad it’s gonna be if we go 0-12.

  27. Hank October 18, 2013 7:54 am

    Random thought…

I’d like to see Kwamane Bowens return punts.

    Go Warriors!

  28. Popololoco October 18, 2013 7:54 am

If you don’t put a good product on the field then fans will stay away.

  29. A-House October 18, 2013 7:55 am

anyone here know what the details of the “plan” submitted to the BOR by Apple/Jay?

if they committed to NO deficit for 2013 – it was a very poor assumption based on what happened, overall, in 2012 – Na Wahine VB will continue to earn $$ as will baseball; at best men’s VB and BB may break even; all others will lose or not even earn a penny.

thus the assumption that football will carry the weight is wrong and if your basic assumption is wrong, everything else that follows is wrong.

continued losses in football will “grow” the deficit by 6 figures – just a matter of how much.

I have to disagree with you about the Colorado Game, Hawaii should win 4 games this season but I just don’t see this years team making a bowl game. And the young men have tutors and online capability to keep up with class work. This years very young team needs the game reps badly. Next year 2014 team should be a bowl team and probably doesn’t need the extra Colorado game rep like this years team needs really bad.

  32. Darren October 18, 2013 8:19 am

The musical chairs routine on the o-line is getting awfully difficult to follow. If we’re looking for consistency, shouldn’t we pick just one starting o-line unit?

  33. wasabi October 18, 2013 8:20 am

24- and what about the educations of the 2011 football class…Chow didn’t give a rats @$$ about their education…guaranz if given their choice they would have graduated from UH. This education bs doesn’t apply to the football program…at least not this coach…

  34. Boolakanaka October 18, 2013 8:34 am

Respectfully, my assumptions are not wrong. They are based on facts and best practices having worked in higher education. Here are facts, for the vast majority of division 1 programs with football, most operate in an annual deficit; that we rank in the bottom 10 of the nation in male student-athlete graduation rates; and finally, if you were to look with a critical eye at the top universities in the nation, academics always are at the forefront of their priorities, with athletics at a distant 3rd or 4th.

  35. wasabi October 18, 2013 8:38 am

Boola- am just saying that running off half the football team cannot be good for the graduation rates of male athletes at UH 🙂

  36. Kevin October 18, 2013 8:41 am

A long time UH booster (various sports) once opined:

“Non-revenue sports remain non-revenue because that is the way UH markets them. Its an irresponsible business practice.”

This is common sense and anyone without bias can understand this simple yet true statement from a long-time UH athletics booster that is HEAVILY involved with UH athletics.

Some ignorant people think its the other way around i.e. charge admission and then if money comes in then put marketing efforts to the teams… I wonder about the logic and thought process of some “fans” sometimes. The “thats the way it is” mentality is small time, old time, DYING time. No good business has ever succeeded with that mindset.

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2013 8:43 am

well, I guess one reason (or 6) could be that we are 0-6.

  38. Ipu Man October 18, 2013 8:45 am

Boolakanaka, in your eye, which are the “top universities in the nation”.
    Havard, Yale, Georgetown?????????
Alabama? Ohio State? Miami? Southern Cal?

  39. Boolakanaka October 18, 2013 8:59 am

Without bring too off-putting, certainly not the last four mentioned. And i would include a couple of the schools on the top of your list. To be certain, there are more than a few state universities that would be on my list, eg CAL, UVA, Michigan. Note however, all universities have a specific mission and thus their success has a specific, and sometimes, regional narrative. Point being, UH more than fulfills its mission, but that does not say there is ample room for improvement and change.

  40. Old Diver October 18, 2013 9:06 am

Ben Jay’s three year PAC-12 plan calls for an increase in ticket revenue of about $5000,000 this year. Sounds like he will be at least one million short of that goal. Be interesting how he will handle this problem.

  41. Jonj October 18, 2013 9:28 am

The short fall already shows that we can’t afford to keep chow! Mid season and where half a million short ad tickets sales hasn’t even begun to show how low it will go. Fire chow now… Hire an I nterim head coach and take the time to hire the right coach!

  42. Jonj October 18, 2013 9:31 am

And if we hire a coach befor or the beginning of dec it shouldn’t effect recruiting. Maybe the right hire will cause a great buzz around the state and football community!

  43. NorthShoreFan October 18, 2013 9:35 am

    #24..Boolakanaka..agree with your post but..
“what is more important-additional revenue or a greater institutional emphasis on academics?”
I’m disappointed when we fail in the revenue and academic goals…imho

    Go Warriors!

btw..good story today Tsai master, enjoyed the inside story.

  44. Buffoman October 18, 2013 9:38 am

How does one get a coach to commit to come to an institution that would fire a coach for not winning in a year and a half? Well, you get a smart attorney and you come in cheap with a HUGE buy out if you’re fired before the end of the contract, that way you win and the institution loses…again.

I don’t think a smart coach, an up and comer would come here knowing that they would get fired if there was not an instant winner produced..one that would show winning in a year and a half. getting fired that quickly would ruin any chance of being able to land with a more high profile institution going forward. Not at least with an unbelievable insurance policy of a mega buy out.

  45. Old School Dave October 18, 2013 9:39 am

Stephen: Looking forward to your report on the Scout Bowl?

  46. Boolakanaka October 18, 2013 9:54 am

43… Yes, they both represent dissapointment.

  47. ? October 18, 2013 10:07 am

Would the 600K go directly to the football program or be divided amongst all of the sports programs? Or would Upper Campus take some (all)?

  48. Darren October 18, 2013 10:16 am

If we were good enough to win the West Division this year and had to fly up and play the MW conference championship game in Boise on 12/7, would there be any concerns with time away from class, need to rest, say no to 7th road game, etc., etc.??

Well, since we’re not winning the West Division this year, I’m thinking that we should have taken the Colorado game…

  49. Old School Dave October 18, 2013 10:28 am

Along with more aggressive fund raising, UH needs to attract and get more student involvement at games. They may have to increase the student activity fee, but offer more to the students in return when in attending games at Aloha Stadium. Students and ASUH need to do more on their part to show their support and to create some school spirit, which is lacking on campus.

  50. NotNasti October 18, 2013 10:29 am

RE: Colorado game. The $600K does not represent profit that would be deposited into our coffers. The cost of travel and lodging would have to be deducted from that amount. In the long run, obviously, BJ felt that the amount of money (net) did not justify the time away from school for our student-athletes. Colorado was just looking for a game, and not specifically with Hawaii. We were not in a position to ask for more money, as there were other schools who could take the game for the same amount, or less, due to reduced travel costs.

  51. ALLAN October 18, 2013 10:31 am

WAS THE $6K BEFORE EXPENSES, OR AFTER ALL BILLS, INCLUDING TRAVEL WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID? PROBABLY THE LATTER.

  52. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 10:33 am

    50. You’re right but don’t kids sign scholarships to play football? So why not play a football game if its on the table? Make money while gaining more experience for some of our players… Don’t think our players want to practice for an extra week. Were 0-6, I don’t think 0-7 is going to be that much worse.

  53. cocobean October 18, 2013 10:36 am

Chow said he was in favor of playing so you can’t put not playing CU on him.

Colorado did not meet the price Jay felt would even out the downside of playing. Jay took a look at the numbers and felt the NET after expenses wasn;t worth it. Kifi and boola mentioned some of the downside of playing. If you think hard enough you could come up with more reasons why Jay made the right call.

  54. NotNasti October 18, 2013 10:37 am

I would have liked to see another game, for sure. All I’m saying is that the powers that be probably weighed the amount we were going to net from the game versus the time spent away from school and decided against taking the game. Not saying that I agree with that decision.

  55. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 10:43 am

    54. I wish there was an explanation. Part of being a student athlete is handling school work while on the road. Even if Hawaii only netted 100k, that’s still a great deal to go play football.

  56. NotNasti October 18, 2013 10:46 am

After watching “League of Denial” on PBS, the Frontline program about the book chronicling the NFL’s cover-up of their knowledge of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), I kinda feel guilty about watching and cheering on the “big hits.” All but one of the brains of former NFL players were found to have CTE and increased levels of tau protein. Not all of the players had been diagnosed with concussions. The findings showed that CTE can occur with repetitive sub-concussive impacts, and was found to be present in the brain of a high school football player.

  57. kifi October 18, 2013 10:52 am

    10/12/13 Las Vegas. Nevada
    10/19/13 Boulder, Colorado

    11/2/13 Logan, Utah
    11/9/13 Annapolis, Maryland
    11/16/13 Honolulu
    11/23/13 Laramie, Wyoming

I don’t get the logic of most of you. The Colorado game just doesn’t make any sense. I don’t get the logic behind all of your arguments.

Money is good, in fact it is desperately needed. But not at the expense of the students from an academic, and a physical standpoint. They need the rest.

  58. Brad October 18, 2013 10:55 am

ST. The season’s not over yet. We could get another 11th hour call from Temple again and get some of that American(big east) money. It could be “the Battle of 0-fers” at season’s end!

  59. Old School Dave October 18, 2013 10:56 am

UH isn’t going to raise $250,000 from the fans (gate receipts) with just 3 more home games, so Ben Jay needs to be creative and go through generous donors to make up the deficit. Given the amount of money recently raised for the training table drive upgrades (over $200,000), I’d say that this is doable if you appeal to the right donors (both private and corporate).

Situation in the State of Hawaii prevents the UH Athletic Dept from breaking even in many ways. Having to pay rent to play in their own stadium, no parking and food concession revenues, travel subsidies, sure makes it a steep slope to climb.

  60. kifi October 18, 2013 11:01 am

I don’t get the logic of most of you. The Colorado game just doesn’t make any sense. I don’t get the logic behind all of your arguments.

I apologize. Yes I do see the logic of playing the game, but don’t agree with that perspective.

Didn’t mean to offend anyone and their opinions. After all, it’s okay do desagree.

  61. Maile Tsai–Russ October 18, 2013 11:02 am

#51: “WAS THE $6K BEFORE EXPENSES, OR AFTER ALL BILLS, INCLUDING TRAVEL WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID? PROBABLY THE LATTER.”

Great question. I seriously doubt that the $600K Colorado game would be the NET gain after all travel expenses.

If money is the concern of the advocates, exactly how much would UH have netted financially after the missed classes and travel to a non-conference game in the midst of the season?

  62. Manoa Mist October 18, 2013 11:06 am

One reason UH turned down Colorado. We chickens. Period.

  63. Balko October 18, 2013 11:07 am

Is my recollection accurate that was when Ben Jay started at UH he had a no “body bag” game position?

In any event, balancing the Athletic Department’s books on the backs of the football players gives a pass to the administration. Using those players as human punching bags to cover poor fiscal policies allows more of the same fiscal shenanigans to run in perpetuity. UH really needs a thorough audit of policies, procedures and positions, or situations like this will drag it down the dink hole.

Bear in mind that there are at least two big issues on the horizon:

**Hawaii’s state pension system is deemed to be in the bottom ten of the US regarding its ability to meet obligations. This means that either taxes will need to be raised significantly to covert the massive shortfall, or the payout will have to be slashed to pennies on the dollars promised. As one of the many (and some would say, of lower import) consequences, sports in Hawaii will invariably take a hit as the economy contracts to contend with the situation. UH is going to have to do a lot more with a lot less. This is impossible under the current administrative style.

**With the passing of Senator Inouye, we went from having one of the most powerful purveyors of earmarks to a full slate of neophyte congressional representatives who have little ability (due to a lack of seniority) to acquire money for the state. This loss will be felt for decades, and those funds likely covered up a slew of bad management practices at places like UH over the years. This may mean more accountability at places like UH over time, but it will certainly mean less cushion to paper over chronic bad decision making.

In short, UH can can now, or be forced to change in the near future.

  65. cocobean October 18, 2013 11:18 am

more reasons why Jay made the right call…….

Talk about Ohio State being a body bag game. If Jay took the CU game he would have turned the remaining games into a “body bag” schedule. The team would be playing road weary the rest of the year. Traveling back and forth through muiltiple time zones and playing in altitudes of 5400, 4500 and 7100 ft takes it’s toll. Just the ups and downs of take offs and landings along with flying for hrs at high altitude in a pressurized plane takes it’s toll. This rest week was needed before running the guanlet of the road schedule ahead.

Would have short prep time for CU coming off the rd from LAS and would have a shorter prep time for CSU coming off the road from Boulder.

  66. Jeezy33 October 18, 2013 11:22 am

65.. I don’t wanna see jay complain about money then when there was an opportunity to make some.. If it’s about the travel and academics then I can handle that.. But if it was because Colorado stiffed Hawaii a 100k on the offer then I think we made a bad move

  67. Old School Dave October 18, 2013 11:25 am

UH playing CU would have been an interesting game (televised on the Pac-12 Network), but that’s water under the bridge now. Need to focus on CSU.

BTW, is CU still recruiting the islands much, now that Brian Cabral is no longer there?

  68. madeinhawaii October 18, 2013 11:31 am

Boolakanaka is correct when he says we are near the bottom when it comes to Graduation Success Rates (GSR)for our football players. Tied for the bottom 9th position. But what is scarier is that these rates are probably higher than the GSR for non-athletes at UH.

  69. SteveM October 18, 2013 11:33 am

    Good morning everyone!

After 7 years of The Warrior Beat, some of us figure that ST has a serious point to be made if he mentions the Colorado game for several days in a row. One of those things he cannot say (read: should not say) but someone should officially address and explain.

The other day I opined that Ben Jay has sabotaged his own donation/sponsorship efforts by not playing Colorado. He could point out the hardships the team endures for financial reasons. Instead, he is now silent on why he turns down a $600K gross pay check.

OK, I also opined last week that Colorado should throw in charter flights due to the great last-minute inconvenience. But kifi’s post #18 has me thinking… as most of kifi’s comments does… obviously Colorado didn’t need us as opponents very badly and not ante up an additional $150K for a plane ride.

So if things fell apart because Ben Jay took a hard stand and refused to be low-balled by a Pac-12 team, he should say so. Especially now that he scored a $1.2 million road game for us.

If the refusal was for other reasons, well, maybe those should remain private, lest the talk of firing people starts up again. Even the reason above should remain quiet–but if true, Ben Jay needs to say something that is politically correct and not hampering to his fund-raising efforts.

  70. cocobean October 18, 2013 11:42 am

#66. If no other factor other than money was involved than Jay was wrong. We need the money but at what price to the players academically and physically?

  71. PolyMom October 18, 2013 11:43 am

ST I wish you would get a one on one with Ben Jay. And ask him the really hard questions. He came in with lots of rah rah, but he’s lost my confidence.

  72. Warrior Dave October 18, 2013 12:25 pm

7 ST, I have to disagree with you.

I have to believe that that negotiations with Colorado would affect all future contract negotiations. To accept $600,000 could affect future deals. Maybe Ohio St. and Wisconsin would like to re-negotiate knowing we accept a much lesser amount. If Bellagio offered you a $59 room rate and you accept, wodnt that set the bar for future offers you would want before staying there again?

I have to believe BJ is setting the foundation for the future. This year will hurt financially due to the performance of the football team. But hopefully the team has turned the corner Just my thoughts.

  73. RB October 18, 2013 12:39 pm

Any one know the reason why Keith Kirkwood is back home on the east coast? Did he leave the program? or just went back home cause it’s Bye week?

  74. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 12:41 pm

    72. Good point. I just don’t see why he can’t come out and give an honest explanation… If it is about the kids needing rest and catching up on academics, then say so. If it is because of the reasons Warrior Dave mentioned, then it makes sense. I still think any money right now would be useful to the program. This is actually as healthy as any past football program has been over past 5 years so I think a game wouldnt hurt physically.

With the projected loss of football revenue, I formally propose that Ben Jay adopt the tried and true “Wimpy Strategy” where you defer payment and make someone else pay to secure needed funding for the Athletics Department. All of us old futs should be able to recall the Wimpy J. Wellington character from the Popeye cartoon who had a mean addiction for hamburgers and was fond of saying: “I’ll gladly repay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Somehow Tuesday never seemed to come around but the strategy went something like this:
Olive Oyl: You won a hundred and twenty samoleans?
Wimpy: You know how many hamburgers that is?

    Popeye: Where ain’t they?
Wimpy: They ain’t on the commodore’s boat.
Popeye: That’s where they ain’t? Well if that’s where they ain’t, I’ll prove to you that that’s where they ain’t.

Wimpy: I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

Geezil: What is that glop you’re eating?
Wimpy: It’s a soup burger. These are difficult times. Burgers can’t be choosers.

Wimpy: Rough House? One genuine hamburger for the gentleman. I’m buying.
    Rough House: Who’s paying?
    Wimpy: I’m buying. He’s paying.

Where is Popeye when you need him??

BTW since we’re on the subject of food, does anyone know who sells an excellent pastrami sandwich so I can splurge from my diet of rice, spam, hot dogs, pork & beans, vienna sausage etc. due to my financially induced tuition deficit disorder that I am currently plagued by. The last time I had a good pastrami sandwich was small kid time when we used to drive in from the country and shop at Ala Moana Ctr (ironic we no can afford shopping at high-class Ala Moana now days). My dad would treat us to lunch at Lynn’s Delicatessen where they sold a thick sandwich of hot pastrami piled between slices of rye bread with a big slice of pickle on the side. Salivating just at the thought of it and wondering where those days went.

  91. al October 18, 2013 1:11 pm

calm down ahouse…got to know the facts first.
i can think of several reasons for taking a temporary hiatus.
besides he’s still suffering from the effects of a concussion.

  92. al October 18, 2013 1:12 pm

what 18 year old would not be happy to be home?

  93. cocobean October 18, 2013 1:30 pm

Jeezy. If we had taken the game our sched would look like this beginning with UNLV:

Road, road, home, road, road, home, road, home with no bye week to recoup. The D would be coming off of 2back to back 90+ snap games with the potential to play the same number of snaps in altitude 3 times. I really think we’d be running on empty in the 4th Q in every game and the potential for injury would be magnified. Just my opinion.

  94. Whats up October 18, 2013 1:46 pm

What kills me is that the last bye week Hawaii had, didn’t help the team against Nevada did it? Thats why the Colorado game would have been so benefitical for a Hawaii team that is loaded Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors, but as many Seniors.

  95. al October 18, 2013 1:47 pm

sometimes family matters are good enough reason to go home. fortunately, it happens during a bye week.

  96. Willie October 18, 2013 1:54 pm

Kifi @ 57, your response is right on.

Playing road games are really tough on the body, recovery from injuries are magnified between games/practice when you have to travel. Been there and it can be brutal.

These are student athletes, students meaning academic obligations. Not professionals where this is a part of the job.

Last thing, the back to back road games could seriously compromise the rest of the season with regard to healthy bodies, depth and future performances.

Enough harping about the Colorado game, in my opinion BJ made the right call and someone should stop bringing it up again & again.

  97. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 2:00 pm

    95. Hit it on the nail. Nothing to worry about. And I agree with Whats UP. We didn’t do much with our Bye in the 1st place. We have nothing to lose at 0-6 and everything to gain with possibly experience and maybe an upset.

  98. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 2:01 pm

    96. So back to back road games makes it harder on bodies versus back to back home games??? HMMMMM

  99. primo123 October 18, 2013 2:02 pm

chow and jay need to revamp the schedule….give us some cream puffs to pump up the win loss column.

  100. primo123 October 18, 2013 2:03 pm

any d1 teams we can play from alaska?

  101. primo123 October 18, 2013 2:04 pm

if we’re 5-1 playing cream puffs, nobody would be criticizing the offense, defense, coaches, etc….

  102. Willie October 18, 2013 2:14 pm

98, yup. Much easier to recover when you don’t have to travel. Just sleeping in your own bed is a plus. Also, depending on the time zone difference, that does affect adjustment & recovery.

Have you every played on the road? Try playing back to back games in one day or in a tournament setting. Just in case you ask, my experience was on the college level.

Ask the UH training staff about the difference.

  103. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 2:20 pm

    102. It was a question… Never said I was doubting you… It’s not that big of a deal to me to go asking UH trainers.

  104. jeezy33 October 18, 2013 2:22 pm

At the same time, I do think this generation has gotten soft…. Not talking about head injuries…

We were also able to toss a Football on the field (They let us use their Football)and also attempt a Field Goal.

  106. Kevin October 18, 2013 2:34 pm

This generation (Im 30 so can I say “this generation”?), some kids are bred to believe they are D1 All Americans before they even set foot on a college campus and their rotten parents are the enablers.

All their shortcomings.. always the fault of someone else.

  107. Andrew October 18, 2013 2:34 pm

    101 primo.

I strongly disagree you. Sure the win and loss column will be better, but playing creampuffs doesn’t do much for the program. Winning would only draw criticism about the soft schedule and in the event they lose, it would be much worst than how it is now. Attendance wouldn’t improve very much either even if they were winning. Take a look at the 2007 season. Even though they were undefeated, they didn’t even draw that well until the end of the schedule with Boise and Washington.

  108. SteveM October 18, 2013 2:36 pm

In 7 years, I have never seen ST beat on a dead horse. Well, not counting 2007 and Herman, which was arguably the most moribund carcass in the lower campus last decade.

As I noted in my post #69, old-timer Tsai-kos will suspect that there is a bigger story below the surface…or an action that should be taken for the good of the program…and it is obviously not something he can or should say openly.

  109. cocobean October 18, 2013 2:37 pm

What’s up. If you remember there was talk that the bye was too early in the season to be beneficial health wise. That it would have been better to play right away rather than sitting around stewing over two losses.

The bye week is not about game planning and preparing for your next opponent. It’s about R & H – rest and healing. We didn’t need it after the OSU game but we do need it now given the schedule we’re facing.

  110. jimmy the lock October 18, 2013 3:06 pm

    Hope this lights a fire…

What’s the difference between a dollar bill and the Rainbow Warriors?

You can get 4 quarters from a dollar bill.

  111. jimmy the lock October 18, 2013 3:09 pm

We can speculate all we like and discuss the pros and cons of using the bye week to play in Colorado, but the bottom line is we not playing so go out and enjoy our local high school games today and tomorrow.

  112. primo123 October 18, 2013 3:41 pm

    #101

You agree, win loss record will be better.

“doesnt do much for the program”? what does that mean? being 0-6 but losing to oreg st, usc, nevada, etc etc….that’s “good” for the program?

  113. cocobean October 18, 2013 3:42 pm

#111. Crusaders or Warriors? Lunas or Bears? Cougars or Rams? Nothing like no tomorrow kindof games.

Guess you’re right on the play or nay arguement. At his point it’s like getting involved in that age old debate ….taste greeat/less filling.

  114. primo123 October 18, 2013 3:48 pm

    #101

    Winning cures all.

Yeah, we get criticized for weak schedule, but nobody will want the head coach’s head on a platter.

Attendance is a non-factor, nobody shows up, no matter who we play.

  115. Crime age October 18, 2013 3:51 pm

    Any recap of scrimmage?

  116. Andrew October 18, 2013 3:52 pm

    #114

well going by your argument, might as well just drop down to division 2 then if you’d rather play against weak opponents to get more wins.

  117. primo123 October 18, 2013 3:55 pm

    #116

    We still in the MWC.

    I’m not saying drop down.

I’m saying schedule some cream puffs to get some wins and confidence.

    Public get short memory.

Nobody’s gonna argue or complain with 7-6 record, and playing in the Hawaii Bowl.

  118. primo123 October 18, 2013 3:56 pm

I doubt Chow will turn down the bowl game with a 6-6 record.

    We might vote him Govenor…….for a day……

  119. Andrew October 18, 2013 4:01 pm

    #117

People always find something to complain or argue about

  120. Buffoman October 18, 2013 4:02 pm

I think #114 meant when a new coach is installed with a new system, it may ease the W-L option if the schedule was not so brutal. BUT then again, schedules are made way in advance and change at the top is not anticipated until it happens.

I do agree with #114’s last statement. It did not appear to make a difference who we played or what the record was to fill the stadium. It was disappointing when JJ went undefeated and we still did not have sell outs for all of the final 3-4 games at home. (BTW I do agree that winning fills more of the empty seats and losing creates more empty seats, in Hawaii. I don’t know how it is in the Big 10 or SEC).

Could it be Pay per view?

  121. Slugger October 18, 2013 4:05 pm

Off football….getting to watch Jane Croson on AZ team & Monica Stauber on the Bruins WVB side on PAC12 TV. Interesting to see how Croson fits in on the Wildcats team.

d1shima, one student I took to LV for the game knows your oldest from SLS. He used to be on JV FB, but mainly wrestled.

    Back to regular programming…

  122. Orioles 4 eva. October 18, 2013 4:20 pm

How can you ask boosters for money, six figure money, and not do everything possible first to balance the budget. Scheduling Colorado would have been a good start. Ben Jay seems to be sending mixed messages.

  123. primo123 October 18, 2013 4:20 pm

    #119

    True.

But funny what they argue about when you have a GOOD RECORD.

    jus sayin…..

  124. primo123 October 18, 2013 4:25 pm

    #120

Pay per view is here to stay.

UH football attendance going average 20k from now. Gone are the days of 30 – 40K.

People’s “tradition” now involves the Pay per view option.

Groups that used to come to the stadium are now gathering at someone’s house, big screen tv, no line to the bathrooms, cheaper good quality beer, food, friends can sit whereever….on and on and on.

  125. primo123 October 18, 2013 4:26 pm

    someone should do a study………

Did UH football attendance fall, when tv manufacturers made Big Screen TV’s more affordable?

    maybe maybe???

  126. primo123 October 18, 2013 4:27 pm

    Also add…..High Definition………..

  127. d1shima October 18, 2013 4:31 pm

primo. It’s been discussed many times about PPV affect on attendance. You’re the first bring up the affordability of hi-def big screen tvs as another factor to consider in this discussion.

I go to all the home games but I always try to catch the rebroadcast on my affordable hi-def big screen. I enjoy the closeups ofthe plays and the slo-mo replays. Sometimes my old eyes can’t catch all the details live thatthe TV can.

  131. Whats up October 18, 2013 4:47 pm

Im watching on ESPN UCF vs #8 Louisville with QB Teddy Bridge Water and it just like Hawaii making a huge comeback. UCF was down by 21 points/ 3 scores and made a huge run and tied the game and it’s the 4th quarter with UCF driving. The score is 28-28 right now, but just like Schroder leading the Hawaii team to comebacks.

If they truly want improve the experience in the stadium, they got to cut the noise pollution.

At least, if you’re watching on TV, your ears aren’t constantly assaulted with video commercials, audio commercials, and stuff on the field that used to be only at the endogenous the quarters, but now occur even during timeouts. I think they sometimes forgo replays cause there’s a video commercial they need to show. And the audio bombardment between plays is constant. At least, turn the volume down so my ears don’t feel the pain.

The band rarely gets to play.

Yes, just a grumpy old man wanting to enjoy the game (even if we are on the losing end).

  145. Balko October 18, 2013 5:59 pm

Kind of interesting hearing multiple complaints about violence in Aloha Stadium during the games, and the local ESPN radio personalities dismissing the complaints as invalid because they didn’t notice them, as did Ben Jay when he was a guest on the local ESPN morning radio show.

People were saying that violent incidents were driving them from attending and/or bringing their families to the games. I wonder if these complaints are related to ticket buyer’s decreasing tolerance for such behavior (as we age, we tend to have lower and lower thresholds for tolerance of such behavior) coupled with the comfort and safety of home/PPV viewing?

In any event, I was surprised how easily Ben Jay dismissed these concerns. What happened to the business sentiment that the customer is always right?

  146. ALLAN October 18, 2013 6:28 pm

Dodgers lost, not a good fall for my teams 🙁

  154. madeinhawaii October 18, 2013 8:18 pm

    Balko

As we age, the definition of threatening behavior (violence) changes because our bones become more brittle, reflexes slower, and we tend to take much longer to heal. It’s a legitimate concern as there is still a disproportionate number of older folks at the games.

  155. Balko October 18, 2013 8:25 pm

madeinhawaii: (As I reach for my reading glasses) I wasn’t dismissing the concerns, far from it. I was surprised that they were shrugged off with little regard for people who bought tickets and felt uncomfortable with the behavior of some people in the stands.

  156. Warrior Dave October 18, 2013 8:34 pm

I have seen fights in the stands for a long time. I don’t blame BJ for dismissing it. Some fans still have the same complaint for the last 10 years.

  157. madeinhawaii October 18, 2013 8:35 pm

    Balko,

Sorry.. after I posted it, I realized you might construe it that way. Actually I was agreeing with you and trying to add to your comment. The older I get, the more practice I get with “retrospect.”

  158. Warrior Dave October 18, 2013 8:35 pm

#152 Al, yes it would be sweet if Kolton made the 25 person roster. He deserves it.

  159. cocobean October 18, 2013 8:39 pm

#145. Like many here I’ve been a season ticket holder from the beginning. In my opinion violent incidents have not been an on going problem. When it does happen alcohol is usually the impetus.

It would be interesting to review the police records for the exact number of such incidents and compare them to numbers at other schools. Rude boisterous fans can have an intimidating effect on families but is this considered violence?

The most reported on incident involved a FSU fan several years ago. The only thing about that incident was it was a one sided account of what happened. The two to tango rule was completely ignored.

  160. Balko October 18, 2013 8:40 pm

    madeinhawaii: No worries 🙂

  161. d1shima October 18, 2013 8:53 pm

I hope to eat more than my share of crab cakes when we go to the Navy game.

  166. d1shima October 18, 2013 9:04 pm

    3-Prong,

Are you headed down to Newport? I’d love to be there and get some crab off the boats and a few Rogue Ales.

  167. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:08 pm

Piled the crab, end cut prime and 3 pc sushi (au pau!) all washed down with some greenies….(need to do some exercising when I get back…hehe)

  168. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:11 pm

di. You up here? Where’s Newport from Winchester Bay?

  169. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:14 pm

Warrior Dave, ooooh Blue Crab Cakes!

  170. d1shima October 18, 2013 9:18 pm

    3-Prong,
    Negative. Still in Hawaii.

Not familiar with Winchester Bay. gugumap says that’s by Coos Bay. If so, then Newport is about 90 minutes north on the coast. OR20 comes out on the coast at Newport when you coming from Corvallis.

  171. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:25 pm

For the fishermen out there,….saw some guys throwing out ulua style poles with small crab nets attached catching a few dungeness. Dunking for dungeness right from shore..unreal. They were fishing right next to guys whipping for kings at a river mouth in Lincoln City. Seals hanging around trying to pick off hooked fish. Got my fishing juices flowing….

  172. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:27 pm

Back to the other “Fs”. Go Bows!

  173. 3-Prong October 18, 2013 9:29 pm

    Thanks d1…..

  174. cocobean October 18, 2013 9:32 pm

D1. Did you copyright Be a Fan?

Would make a good slogan for the UHAD to promote itself and all it’s sports. Bet a smart marketing guy could build a campaign around it to promote more fannies in the stands for all sports.

  175. WarriorFan October 18, 2013 9:37 pm

This weekend the Warriors won’t lose; could be the only weekend this happens for the season, unfortunately.

With football losing so much money, the fan base being discouraged from attending games due to a poor product (no fault of the players), and with such a low morale within the Warrior football community, when will a change be made?

To go from the program’s greatest heights, only to drop below again to “Von Appen”-like status, at some point the AD must step in and make changes before things get worse.

Even with another year to recruit “their” players, the Warriors will not “chase championships;” shouldn’t we be winning championships instead of chasing them?!

Simply put, some lifelong coaches are not head coach material; a pro-style does not capitalize on the talent we are able to attract to Hawaii.

Ben Jay is a bean counter. He’s always talking revenue. I doubt he was the one who turned down $600g’s for this hard up program. I’m not an accountant but the way to fix the budget seems obvious to me. Play all the non conference games on the road to the highest bidder. If you look at this years schedule, they could have played 5 non conference games on the road. At $400g’s a game avg., that’s $2mil. With only 3 home games, the stadium would have at least 35 – 40,000 so it would look n feel better. Plus the pay per view revenue may increase cause they would play better teams. No Army, Navy. We want Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Oregon. Here’s a thought. Give that crap Aloha Stadium to UH for free. Let the program take in 100% of revenue from games and swap meet.

    #177 Mytake,

Why would you play 5 non-conference games on the road for $400K each? To play at Ohio St and Wisconson, the payout is $1.1 and $1.2 million each. The next will be $700K and $800K net. Your math needs work as why eould you play non-conference road games to break even?

You obviously don’t go to home games as playing only 3-4 home games just doesn’t cut it. Like that you are thinking outside the box but please make some sense.

It’s good that the coaches have an extra week to prepare and coach the team for the Homecoming game against Colorado State. The team has additional time to practice and heal. I don’t know to what extent future away game financial negotiations might be hampered by accepting a small compensation here, but it does seem reasonable to add that to the balance sheet in favor of maintaining the bye week. Mostly though, I want to see if the HC can lead the team to victory against one of the 3 teams (UNLV, Col State, Army) that seemed (before the start of the season) to be in the moderate to high probability win category.
