Victory lap

Receivers coach Luke Matthews and recently converted receiver Kwamane Bowens were the reasons the defense ran three laps after yesterday’s practice.

In what was simply called, “The Competition,” there were three sprints matching representatives from the offense and defense.

In the 40-yard dash, Bowens cruised to victory after safety Trayvon Henderson slipped. There was no protest on whether Bowens, who moved from cornerback 10 days earlier, had logged enough time at receiver to qualify as an offensive player.

Matthews easily out-sprinted defensive assistant Richard Torres in the other 40-yard dash.

And in the, uh, good-living division, defensive assistant Jared Vanderbeek out-rumbled tight end coach Phil Rauscher over 20 yards.

The Competition continues today with a punt-catching contest between the offensive and defensive linemen, and an egg toss.

It’s fun and games this week after UH turned down an offer to play Colorado on Saturday. (The Colorado-Charleston Southern game will be shown on the Pac-12 Network.)

Good morning Tsaiko!!! Good to see the boys having some fun while still maintaining some physical aspects of the game. Maybe they just need to loosen up a bit.

San Francisco needs Hukilau back, or something like it. My Hawaiian plate (laulau, mac salad, lomi salmon) consumption has fallen big time. Plus, it would be great to have a place for Bay Area Warrior fans to meet on a regular basis.

    Woo Hoo…Boola…bangers and eggs…???

  16. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 7:26 am

For the egg toss, they can’t possibly allow QBs and WRs to pair up right?

Then again, maybe its a hidden drill from coaches to force WRs to catch with their hands and not their bodies.

Good to see the staff keeping things on the lighter side during the week off. Morale seems to be good still. This team does have resolve and it’s very admirable they fight to the final whistle. We’ve seen some past UH teams check out once the game starts going south.

Don’t worry UH fans, at least we’re not Grambling St. That situation is a complete disaster, possibly one of the worst situations in modern football history.

  17. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 7:27 am

  20. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 7:55 am

Looking forward to Florida St vs Clemson… Going to be an insane atmosphere. As much I like Winston (I think he’s the best NFL QB prospect in college ball), I gotta side with the home team and a more experienced Tajh Boyd. I think Winston will finally make a few freshmen mistakes in this one.

Time for my picks… Season total currently (21-12)

    Arizona (+6) vs Seattle
    Florida (-3.5) at Missouri
    Wyoming (-7) vs Colorado St.
Boise St (-22) vs Nevada Reno
    Philadelphia (-2.5) vs Dallas

Not totally confident with these ones… but lets see I still got the touch. Going against the grain on Philly v Dallas (majority of tickets for Dallas). I think Boise is going to completely shut down Nevada and Nevada can’t stop them. Seattle is just not the same on the road. Missouri lost their #1 QB and coming off a gigantic win vs Georgia, so it’s a tough spot for them. Wyoming is really tough at home.

  21. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 7:57 am

    Also,

    Clemson (+3) vs Florida St.

  22. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 8:11 am

The big boys doing a punt catching contest? That’ll be fun!

They should have a Punt-Pass-Kick competition with the linemen also.

    FUHA,
    Good luck on those picks….

    Though, I don’t like AZ+6, WY-7, Boise-22, or Phil-2.5…. To each their own… Good luck to you sir…

  25. Former UH Athlete October 17, 2013 8:36 am

24… I know… I don’t love em all either. I probably should have only made 3 plays but I’ve been pretty hot this season, so I figured I’d take some shots this week.

The Philly pick was mainly because of the trends.. Cowboys as usually over bet and there’s value the other way on most weeks. Definitely don’t love Philly caz their D is horrid, but I’m anticipating Romo to hand the Eagles a 4th quarter gift.

I view Boise vs Nevada as a complete mismatch. Boise grinds people down with their run game and Nevada can’t stop anybody… UNR requires the other team to stop themselves. UNR might backdoor cover, that’s the scary part.

  37. Whats up October 17, 2013 10:28 am

I’m saying that Chow, Jordan Wynn and his offense took a lot of heat from us in the first 3 games and Kaumeyer’s defense was pretty darn stout. Then the defense went into regression and started giving up big plays and not stopping offenses on 3rd downs or penalties that extend drives. Which ultimately led to them staying on the field for sustained drives that led to 70 to 112 offensive plays defended. And 500+ yards given up in the past 3 games.

Since a lot of teams are going fast pace, up tempo, no huddle, fast break type offenses that is the same as Hawaii offense tempo. I don’t buy into the offense is scoring to fast or what not and the defense is getting left out to dry theory. Because the past 3 opponets defenses gave up a lot of points to Hawaii up tempo offense as well but played better than Kaumeyers defense. Kaumeyer needs to fix his porous defense that is giving up 300+ yards in the air and around 200 yards on the ground. Because there is not many offenses that can score more points the opponents with a defense like Kaumeyer’ s is right now.

  41. jeezy33 October 17, 2013 11:19 am

    37. The offense isn’t scoring too fast. The offense is simply putting on the field too long of periods in a game… Scoring points is nice, but you need balanced scoring through out the game. Not just at the end of the game down 3 scores…

Where is the offense the 1st 3 quarters while the Defense is fighting to keep the game close? The score was 36-17 in the 4th quarter… That isn’t enough scoring… So Hawaii scores late once again and gives fans false hope like the offense is finally clicking…

Hawaii opened up the game with a 3 and out.. That’s awful. You script a game plan going up into that and hang a 3 and out. Hawaii didn’t score in the 1st quarter and punted on 1st 3 possessions… You think the defense likes that? Not to mention Bubba Luna almost takes it to the house and Hawaii comes up empty.

How about the offense move the ball throughout the entire game and not just the 1st 2 possessions(San Jose St) or final 3 possessions(UNLV) Its a 4 quarter game

  48. A-House October 17, 2013 12:52 pm

perhaps an unanswered concern or question:

has Chow ever explained why he decided to “hire” such young and inexperienced grad assistants and made them assistant coaches? there is a definite trend including the last 2 “grad assistants” for QB and Receiver.

being a HC for the first time, would it not be more reasonable to hire “experienced” coaches who can help teach/stabilize the players?

some will rebut with financial reasons, but to insure team success, perhaps experience is better than very little?

Could it be so they will never question the HC?

  49. jeezy33 October 17, 2013 1:02 pm

    48. Technically, you don’t hire grad assistants. The real mistake was hiring Price who didn’t work out and having to throw Wynn under the fire.

Regardless, I don’t know how much a difference it all makes. The team’s lack of discipline on both sides of the ball fall on the HC in my eyes and the only unit that is under control is Special Teams.

We draw up 1-2 creative plays a game whether is a reverse to Gant vs San Jose St. or Kwamane Bownes vs UNLV. We need to draw up more plays that give our best play makers the ball in space.

  50. Papololoco October 17, 2013 1:22 pm

    #48
It’s simple, Chow wants to be in total control. He can control everybody on the offensive staff and dictate what he wants to be done, in other words they can’t move a muscle without his say so, JMHO.

  51. Papololoco October 17, 2013 1:25 pm

    #49
If Chow really wanted another OC then he could’ve went out and hired somebody else. It’s painfully obvious that the game has totally passed him by and we need an OC who knows and understands todays game.

  52. Whats up October 17, 2013 1:27 pm

    Jeezy33

Just before halftime both Hawaii and UNLV offenses where blowing up the defenses and scoring at will. Hawaii was actually leading 17-13 in the game at halftime of the UNLV Game. Before the offense went cold in the 3rd qtr but the defense once again couldn’t stop the UNLV offense and gave up 17 points alone in the 3rd qtr. Then UNLV offense and defense went cold in the 4th but still scored 9 points in the 4th. But 579 yards given up in the UNLV game, SJSU 534 yards given up over 200 yards on 5 big plays and now ranked #17 Fresno State gave up 530 yards, plus against Oregon State the defense gave up 508 yards. Thats 4 games this season Hawaii defense has given up 500+ yards which lead to points and losses.

Can’t keep blaming the Offense or Special Teams for the Defense being so porous. The defense is getting smoked throughout the game, its not like the defense is getting smoked in the 4th quarter because it’s tired. Most of the time the Defense plays it’s best when Sean Schroeder is leading the Offense and is trying make a comeback.

  53. jeezy33 October 17, 2013 1:40 pm

I am not defending the Defense at all.. They have been bad….

But by no means is the offense performing either… The defense can’t simply be on the field for 100 plays a game. Especially on the road.

Whether the offense scores or not, they don’t sustain any long drives. Most of the time, the offense isn’t scoring though considering the amount of possessions they get.

Hawaii scored 2 TDs in a row in the 1st half. I wouldn’t call that scoring at will. Throughout the ball game, it can’t be quick 3 and out or quick score. There has to be some medium in there where the offense gains a few 1st downs and punts. Or move down the field and kick a FG. There are too many long droughts where no offense is being played and then at the end of the game the offense starts moving.

  54. Whats up October 17, 2013 1:51 pm

    #51

I’m not convinced that the game has passed Chow by and If Chow wants to mentor Jordan Wynn to be a quasi-Offensive Corrdinator. Then lets see what happens? Rolo got mentored? Aranda got mentored? So why not see what happens with Wynn? It will only suck if the young Jordan Wynn gets mentored up as the next OC and then leaves Hawaii for some reason. Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews are very young and where grad assistants but they know Chow’s style of offense first hand from there playing days at Utah. And first hand experience counts because you know they understand the Offense.

It’s kinda like the folks here that want Rolo back as a Hawaii coach. He got hired at Hawaii because is knew J.J. RnS offense first hand and got mentored up to the OC job. So we all knew Rolo knew the RnS because he played in JJ system at Hawaii, same thing as Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews. Did JJ control his offense? Yes. So why would anybody think Chow would be any different? Come on folks, wake up. Defensive minded head coaches will control the defense and offensive minded head coaches will control the offense! Duh. Price was a major flop for Chow and hopefully Wynn proves to be the next Rolo as rising from assistant coach to OC for Hawaii. Only time will tell.

  55. kifi October 17, 2013 2:02 pm

I really think that the reason that we are 0 and 6 is because of the “Swoosh”. Ever since we lost the “Swoosh”, we have lost our mojo. Bring back the “Swoosh”, and we’ll get our mojo back. Wins will follow..

  58. primo123 October 17, 2013 2:13 pm

    I agree with jeezy….offense sucks….defense sucks…chow sucks….even kekaula sucks…only one doing a good job is special teams.

What time is the scrimmage tomorrow?

  60. primo123 October 17, 2013 2:14 pm

maybe we should bring back the triple option…….hmmmm?

  61. kifi October 17, 2013 2:21 pm

I like what Hawaii is doing offensively. Their offensive split between run/pass plays has been real good in the last two games. I like that 35/65 split between run and pass plays. Unfortunately Hawaii hasn’t done as well on the average per run play as they could or should be doing. The 5.0 yards per rush is an adequate number. Perhaps we could continue for the rest of the season with that per rush average.

    #rush/avg. per rush – #pass/avg. per pass attempt (%rush plays/%pass plays)

    UNLV
    26/5.0 – 47/6.9 (36%/64%)

    SJSU
    33/2.6 – 53/7.3 (38%/62%)

    FSU
    35/1.5 – 46/8.2 (43%/57%)

    Nevada
    36/3.7 – 45/5.4 (44%/56%)

    OSU
    25/2.8 – 32/5.3 (44%/56%)

    USC
    31/0.7 – 41/5.1 (43%/57%)

UH soccer team picks up first Big West road win

    By Star-Advertiser staff

    POSTED: 12:59 p.m. HST, Oct 17, 2013
    LAST UPDATED: 01:03 p.m. HST, Oct 17, 2013

The Hawaii soccer team picked up its first ever road win in Big West Conference play with a 2-0 defeat of UC Davis today.

UH (7-7, 2-3 BWC) broke open the game midway through the second half. Junior forward Tiana Fujimoto scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute and it was followed two minutes later by an own goal on the Aggies (3-7-3, 0-2-1).

The Rainbow Wahine kept themselves in the hunt for one of four BWC tournament berths with the win, and will look for another on Sunday at Long Beach State.

Unfortunately for the Wahine, freshman striker Kama Pascua received a second yellow card in the 88th minute, equaling a red and automatic ejection. By rule, she must sit out the team’s next match.

UH was previously 0-6-1 on the road in Big West play since joining the league in 2012.

Fujimoto’s goal was the 20th of her career and career-best ninth of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Monk Berger, inserted back into the starting lineup, had six saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

Did the Titans improve considerably after Chow left? I thought they had an issue with their Qb selection during and after Chow. Would be interesting to see those stats with Chow’s successor.

Shouldnt compare jordan wynn with dave aranda. Aranda was already a defensive coordinator before coming to hawaii.

I think both stores are actually struggling because the cupboards were left empty overnight. It’s difficult to be competitive in today’s environment without only 2 and 3 star products. I actually blame the CEO’s, it’s their fault. The employees are giving 100% and working their butts off. We just need to be positive and give them support by showing up at their respective stores.

30% third down margin. We need to get that up to 40, 42, and better 45%. Of course as our expert Jeezy always says we need to do a better job on first down. We need to gain at least four yards on about 55 to 60% of our first down opportunities. That ‘ll give us a good chance of reaching our 3rd down percentage goals.

#83 One kid just graduated from graduate school at UH & another kid still attending UH = I cannot even afford rotisserie chicken = hot dog & pork and beams tonight – freakin tuition keep going up.

Hot dog with pork and beans is one ‘ono meal. Das how we grew up in the homestead. Dat was better than the corned beef with da onions (I used to get the head slap for complaining). On occasion when grandpa actually earned a paycheck, he would stop by da market at chinatown for roast pork, char siu pork, maui onions, dipped in hawaiian salt, and da nastiest three day old poi. Dat was da best dinner up da heights of Papakolea.

We were just poor. Not because anybody was in college. That was something that we only saw on the TV.

Senior left guard Shawn Matautia is the biggest of the bunch at 6-foot-4, 400 pounds. He’s followed by junior left tackle Darrin Paulo (6-6, 320), sophomore right tackle Soape Tupou (6-4, 300), senior center Errick Dennis (6-3, 300) and relatively trim junior right guard Charles Bell (5-11, 240). None of them even played varsity football last season

Good thing Chow understands the three basic elements of long term coaching success – recruits, recruits, recruits.

So the defense beat the offense in the egg toss.

  103. just saying October 18, 2013 4:56 am

Just my opinion but, seems to me that chows offensive strategy doesnt work because the type of players needed to run his system are players from colleges like alabama where you know they will run the ball and you cannot stop them, so that stops the pass rush and gives the quaterback time to throw the ball . but because they need to score points to catch up ,he changes his conservative approach and starts to score points. I think thats why he has a hard time with the quaterback situation and type of offense he tries to run because each quaterback is slightly better at running a different type of offense. he has to choose which quaterback and offense with the type of players he has now which gives him the best chance to win. he is a great recruiter and hopefully he keeps changing his offense to the type of players he gets
