Whether Graham practices today — or is healthy enough to play Saturday — is another matter.
Graham did not play against Fresno State because of a subluxed left (non-throwing) shoulder.

I can be wrong, but to me it just seems like chow will anoint someone QB and that’s it….no chance no hope for others. competition is good, wins are better. the QBs will push each other and a leader will emerge that the line and receivers can galvanize around instead of just follow. And that’s because a proven leader who emerged is almost always better then an anointed or inherited leader….my opinion 🙂

Great News about Taylor Graham, having the option of Taylor and Sean at the helm is a blessing for the Warriors!

For UH, doesn’t really matter who starts Saturday, I think we figured out that UH can just let it rip on the deep ball. Just give the WRs a chance and they have the talent to go get it. Just keep it away from double coverage.
TG or SS must be decisive, if it means choosing the wrong receiver once in a while, so be it… Anything is better than being indecisive and getting hit too much, then getting rattled. Once rattled, then everything goes bad and nothing works. Decision making can be coached up during a game. A rattled QB hearing footsteps is much harder to settle down.

Great Article about Harding – I was at the OSU game with some friends from Oregon who was amazed that he was Punting, Returning Punts and Receiving… To top it off on one play he juked a defender before getting the punt off. I hope they throw in some fake punts with him.

18. I think Harding may have the option to run if nobody comes after him and it’s not a long distance to cover. The opponent’s punt return/block teams have had defenders around so Harding hasn’t really had an opportunity.
Opposing special teams coaches should be aware of Harding’s multi-talents so they should have people keeping an eye on him.

The DL needs to have a big game and get in Fales’ face. Fales has regressed to 58% this season from 72.5% completions in 2012. Kaumeyer should dial up blitzes early in game to put Fales on his okole and get him to rush things. Fales doesn’t have a big arm and he gets very inaccurate when he tries to gun the ball.
Fales is accurate on touch throws vs cover 2 in the hole between the LBs and the safeties, that’s what the UH D has to look out for. That’s why I think blitz early, then only rush 3 or 4 and mix coverages to take away the throws Fales is good at. The UH DL should have the talent to get get pressure on Fales without blitzing.

Sschroeder should start. He has proven to be able to move the team and put points on the board. Its like Rolovich when he got a second chance. Take advantage of his senior leadership and experience. You get a feeling that he just wants to play football and at a high level. Taking all the hits he absorbed last season and transforming them into Ws.

He had a great game subbing in the late 3rd quarter with a tired defense playing soft coverage and suffering at least one key injury. Schroeder doesn’t guarantee a win. He can always sub in if the starter struggles. Groom for the future. Many of you predicted less than 4 wins this year so we’re right on your schedule. Even MWC media picked UH last place. So 1-11 or 0-12. Right on their schedule too.

Yes SS tenses up at times and holds the ball too long. But when he turns into gun slinger mode and not worried about making mistakes, he has shown to be pretty effective.
Not saying he is great… But give the man some credit after how poorly he played last year. He’s come a long ways and has taken advantage of opportunities given to him.

Schroeder still has to learn how to throw the ball away to avoid a sack and make the down and distance to have a reasonable chance to pick up the first down. It’s a lot better 3rd and 10 rather than 3rd and 17. He must have a mental clock in his brain to get rid of the ball quick. He’s got to do his reads, whether it’s the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option and let it fly.
He’s not quick enough to elude even slow DL, much less pass rushers. The other thing too is that by throwing the ball away you avoid making a fumble and maybe take it to the house. Punting is not a bad thing you know.
It seems so simple, but in the fire I guess it’s not that easy. Still, SS is a smart guy so I can’t excuse him. He should know better. But, I have to say he seems to have improved his confidence. I think the wins against UNLV and South Alabama at the ending part of last year helped him.

Interesting that Chow wants to run a Pro Set. But changed it to RS to catch up using SS. it’s been reported by many that Chow is stubborn so I wonder if Taylor plays it’ll be in the Pro Set and if SS plays it’s be RS???? To confused so just win baby!!!

I’ve never heard Chow say he wants to run a Pro Set O. Maybe you’ve heard it but I haven’t. I heard him say many times “we’ve got to able to run the ball…” that’s about it.
Can someone who knows describe what the Pro Set formations look like and does it match what Chow has been running.

chow has said before, that he’d use elements of the run n shoot in his offense and not be just a ‘pro set’ offense.
chow also said, the offense run by ss was different from the one that woolsey ran.
when ss went in they were down 42-3 and nothing to lose midway thru the 3rd quarter.
i doubt he’ll be the run n shoot guy at the beginning of the sj st game. if they get down 42-3 again, maybe maybe…..lol

Are you gonna put all your $$$$$ into a small tournament that doesn’t count for much, or are you gonna put aside enough ammo for the WSOP?
Who doesn’t like Schroeder as a person, but let’s face it, he’s gone after this year. Many, if not most, fans picked UH to lose to SJSU. Groom QB’s for next year where fan’s expectations will be much higher.
And that’s not to say that we can’t win if Graham or Woosley or Higgins starts. Any guy can get the win. But I like to look at Schroeder now as our Ace up the sleeve. When we need him after the opposing defense is a little gassed and their best D-line pass rushers are hobbled, BAM! 5 unanswered TD’s!!
If Schroeder starts, though, so be it. He deserves it.
As much as us fans want wins, and I do go to the games (how can a true fan not), this is no make it or break it year for Chow. He’s has to think about next year too. Or next year may be his last. Coach has to consider factors that fans don’t have to consider.
In the end, I support anyone starting. I leave those decisions up to the Coach. Just play well on D and get some turnovers. Get some excitement going on O with TD’s and big plays and we, the fans in the stands, will get the stadium rockin’! Win or lose.
Pro set offense definition:
Its a split back formation where the running backs line up closer to the line of scrimmage behind either the guards or the tackles and are side by side as opposed to in a line like an I formation. There is typically a tight end and two wide receivers. The formation allows for running and passing as the backs (two RBs or a RB and FB) are close to the line and can serve receive as receiving options in addition to running. It’s most commonly associated with Bill Walsh’s West Coast offense.

55. U better start winning games this year before you can think of next year. I wouldn’t be surprised 1 bit if Larry Tuileta is our QB next year. Taylor Graham has been in college long enough. If he can’t hit a wide open WR now, experience isn’t the answer.
And yes SS is most likely a back up QB anywhere. But Hawaii doesn’t have a starting caliber QB so best thing to do is ride the hot hand at this point.
Even if Chow decides to run a platoon type system similar to what Spurrier does with Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson at times, I’m all for it. Toledo had success doing it past 2 seasons. Oklahoma St did it with whoever had the hot hand.
Were not winning games period. So no matter who you’re arguing to start, it isn’t a good option. I just want to go with the hot hand at this point. If Graham starts and we go 3 and out on our 1st year possessions, I hope the Coach pulls the trigger to light a spark. Vice versa too.

No question no matter who starts, we are all in agreement we support that student athlete. Not his fault for starting even when factors such as performance and results might suggest otherwise. It’s norm’s call who starts. We all get it. No issue there.
Hard to continue to support a person, however, who is not a student athlete, who is a highly paid professional, and who clings to the past and makes decisions about the future of the program, not based on who can best lead us to victory based on recent performance and results, but upon ideas such as promises made to a qb to entice said qb to come to hawaii, and loyalty to his “annointed” starter.

What to watch for on offense: An improved passing game. It wasn’t Sean Schroeder’s fault that the offense didn’t move – he didn’t get any time to work – but scoring became a big problem and there weren’t any big pass plays coming even when he did have time

What to watch for on defense: Even more attacking. The Warriors will never hold up well against the better running teams, and there will be times when the D just can’t get off the field, but it has to keep improving the pass rush to help everyone else out. The aggressiveness last year was great, but it didn’t lead to enough takeaways and didn’t always save the secondary. The defense has to make up for giving up big rushing yards with more third down stops. That will come from veterans Tavita Woodard and Beau Yap on the outside up front, while the linebackers will be involved as well.
**UH HAS BEEN BETTER THAN PREDICTED. SCORES DON’T SHOW IT BUT UH CAN STOP THE RUN AND HAS FORCED TURNOVERS.
The schedule: It’s going to be really, really rough early, but it eases up a wee bit. There are just enough winnable games to hope for a better year, but it’s too tough a slate to be a factor in the conference title chase. Missing Boise State from the Mountain is a plus, and getting Colorado State and Utah State isn’t bad, but that’s about the only break. Starting out against USC and at Oregon State is tough enough, but the non-conference kickoff is made worse by a Mountain West opener at Nevada and followed up by a nasty showdown against Fresno State. There’s a rough second half stretch of three road games in four weeks, made even rougher with one of the trips to Maryland to play Navy.

Best offensive player: Junior C Ben Clarke. Then BRS.

The Warriors will likely start out the season 0-4 after facing USC, at Oregon State, at Nevada and Fresno State, but San Jose State, even with all the improvements and even with David Fales at quarterback, is a winnable game. With UNLV and Colorado State to follow, the chance will be there for Hawaii to go on a bit of a run if it’s good enough to beat the Spartans.

I liked hearing Chris Gant mention that the receivers are looking to block downfield for other receivers after catches the other night. We were near him when that last kickoff was close to going out of bounds and were all yelling “don’t touch it!” He let it go and looked up at us smiling. We all applauded. It ended up a touchback.

I know its just thinking out loud, but you don’t see enough potential in Woolsey as a future starter? I don’t know. I get the hype about Tuileta’s athleticism, but I haven’t seen enough of what he can do with his arm yet.
I still haven’t given up on Graham yet. You have to honestly admit that with each game that he played, there was improvement each start. Different factors played into each loss.
114… The situation reminds me of Timmy Chang coming out of high school. Was Chang ready as a true freshman? Probably not. But knowing that June Jones had a young team that had to grow together for the future, he gave Chang a chance early on. I don’t know for sure if Tuileta would be given that same opportunity but the kid is a very talented QB.
Here’s my take on what I’ve seen. Tuileta has an unorthodox throwing motion as a lot of people will notice but the kid has an accurate arm. Decent to above average arm strength. What I think separates him is his pocket presence and field awareness. He can feel pressure without panicking and uses his feet to step up into the pocket to make nice throws down the field. Woolsey on the other hand isn’t confident throwing in the pocket and will take off and scramble too early. Chow mentioned it during his TV show. When Tuileta gets outside of the pocket, his eyes are down the field and finds open WRs. His pre snap reads are advanced for a QB his age. He doesn’t stare down receivers and goes through his progressions very quickly. I think working with Dilfer over the summer has helped a lot. He has intangible traits that can’t be grasped easily in my opinion.
I haven’t seen enough of Woolsey to really have an opinion on him yet, I just think Tuileta has traits of a QB that can go out and win football games. That IT factor. I could be completely wrong but the kids knowledge is advanced for a 17 year old.
