Day-after musings
• For UH fans, the best thing about last night’s comeback was nobody in the UH locker room was happy. Not head coach Norm Chow, whose team finally saw the light on offense and defense. Not Sean Schroeder, who nearly engineered an historic comeback. Not any of the receivers, linemen nor defensive players. The Rainbow Warriors thought they could have won the game, and they were ticked that they didn’t. Given the option, UH rejected the moral victory.
• Schroeder has long earned admiration for being able to absorb hits. (See: Two concussions and an offseason back surgery.) Last night, he drew praise for his play and leadership. Schroeder’s a stand-up guy who never complained about his role publicly. His mantra is to not worry about “external factors.” It could not have been easy for a quarterback who lost his No. 1 job and co-captaincy. Schroeder proved that not all leaders need titles.
• As it turned out, the quarterback sequence — Ikaika Woolsey starting and Schroeder in the bullpen — had merit. Would Woolsey have provided a similar spark coming off the sideline? That’s the sort of debate that keeps blogs awake at night. While Schroeder has earned the right to start, the Woolsey project had glimpses of promise. Woolsey’s powerful arm stretches defenses; his scrambling eases the burden on the offensive line. Last night, Schroeder was able to look in one direction, then throw to the other. That comes from experience. Woolsey, whose odometer is at one week, will get better with more game reps.
• Tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson’s knee injury forced the Warriors to go with four-wide sets in the second half. That might be a strategy repeated as Pu‘u-Robinson faces a possible season-ending situation. Tight end Harold Moleni, who did not play while recovering from a concussion, is expected to be available for Saturday’s game against San Jose State.
• Welcome back, Billy Ray.

Lakalaka had a real solid game…..but was hoping to see more of St. Juste.
As a fan this team despite the record has made me feel less upset with losing than any other team. I hope that light stays permanently on then i think this game will be the turn around in this season.

I’m kinda neutral on the subject of “moral victories,” but what we did last night was a win somewhere, in some way. Lots to be proud of.
There were some negatives, but there were a ton of positives to move forward with and work off of. The play calling seemed a lot less conservative once SS got in. Thank goodness for that.
As I said yesterday, I did not have this much fun watching a UH football game in many years.

The second half of the third quarter and the fourth quarter took me back to those days when Aloha Stadium used to rock with excitement. The crowd went from dead to completely captivated by the game and there seemed to be a reciprocal dynamism between the efforts of the team and the excitement of the fans. It was great to be there and the most enjoyable game to watch in recent memory. Should we be content with a loss? Of course not. But the team (especially the offense) seemed to transition out of the ponderous slow motion that they had been beset with into an electric and exciting display. The crowd was small but even in its sparseness it gave its’ all and you could feel the energy. It was a glimpse of what is possible for the team and for us as UH fans. Imua!
I watched Kapoi throughout this past game against Waianae he was the pulling guard creating some holes, but Waianae LB were filling them up quick thereafter. Ronald Matautia is everywhere coming up big.
So then ST . . . what do we make of the QB situation going forward regarding the spark off the bench? Does the Woolsey project end, and go with Schroeder? Or, do you go in with the same game plan? I know the excitement is to go with Schroeder, but then what happens with Woolsey’s development?
Maybe last night was a moral victory for the fans.
Carr is one scary quarterback. I see him playing on sundays. Our defense shut out Fresno in the 4th quarter and got all those turnovers. Minus our turnover the game would have been ours. Our oline gave Sean the time he needed and he made some big time throws. He gave our receivers the opportunity to show what they can do. And they did.

Great game for those that stuck around and those that didn’t switch channels. Heart break for the team. Close but no cigar. The coaches have a big job this week refilling the team’s emotional gas tank.
The lesson the team should have learned is they have been their own worst enemy. The offense can’t play defense on itself and the defense can’t aid the other team’s offense.
Untimely penalties plus mental errors exponentially increase the effect of physical errors(which happens to every team).
Hope the next game is a new begiining. When the team starts playing “Chow Ball” as it was meant to be played.

The results last night shows why I am not not a Monday quarterback.
Watching football for some 62 or 63 years; knowing coaches way back like Jimmy Asato, Holmes, Price to present day, even playing computer games relating to football, to have me determine who should be quarterback or playing receivers or on the line, is a bit above my pay-grade.
It may be fun but totally unproductive.
Last night even though we had to watch the ESPN game box, this team is finally getting it! So proud of these kids. It’s time to move forward…and FIGHT for some wins. The D-Line was great! I was texting with the big boy until 2:30.

Impressed by the run blocking. I think we abandoned the run a little too early up the middle but holding calls didnt help at costly times in red zone.
Great game! the offense was always opened up this season, the primary problem was the QB position to run the offense and lead/inspire the team. Yes, the O line is still suspect but the RB’s and WR’s have stepped it up, finally. If just somehow Naole can fix the porous O line.
I know I said that Woosley should start and I was wrong about that, Chow was right Ikaika will have his time he still needs to learn from the upper class men. I was so wrong about that!
Sean Schroeder proved that he is the #1 QB on the roster with more game experience than all the other QB’s combined and it showed last night. Taylor Graham (when healthy) and Sean Schroeder will be battling it out for the starting job, this is not a bad thing because Hawaii has some depth with 2 QB’s that can run the offense.
And for those Rolo fans that say Nevada had it’s 3rd string in the game and Rolo game planned for it? Well, Chow had his 4th string QB (Woosley) in and injuries and then his 2nd string (Schroeder) against a superior opponent in undefeated Fresno State. Although, Sean didn’t bring Hawaii back all the way from a 39 point deficit in a quarter in a half. Chow flexible game planning worked!
We all know that Sean Schroeder has the heart of a champion but last night against all odds coming in the game half way through the 3rd quarter cold. Sean came in and heated up the stagnate offense and lifted the spirits of the defense and played like a Champion.
One thing that I did notice last night, and this is in great contrast to what Chow-haters say, Coach Chow coaches up his players on the sidelines. On several occasions I saw him pull players aside to explain things. I know its what coaches should do, but it was nice to see. Just imagine how much they are learning from someone who has coached for so long.
Jeezy . . . second to the last drive needed a run up the middle on the first play. Still had time. That 3 and out was crucial.

San Jose State has a pile of injuries on offense and defense. 2 of the 3 starting WR’s are injured, which should make it a little harder for David Fales to pick apart the Hawaii secondary.
San Jose State is a really good team, but this just might be Hawaii first chance at Aloha Stadium to get that first win.

Just like ESPN is saying Kiffin rubbed the media and people the wrong way and has no excuse full a roster full on top talent on the nation. USC has had top 10-20 recruiting classes for over a decade and has no business being last place in the PAC 12, period!
Chow did not inherit a roster full of nationwide top talent, full of 5 star and 4 star talent, from McMackin did he? So stop the negative noise and go hug your McMackin blow up doll.

40… Totally agree. Fresno was so spaced out on the last couple drives, they were wide open for a draw play.
Thinking big picture, this 2nd half was the thing that’s needed to kick start the offense. The biggest thing I saw last night was the WR confidence level. Once SS hit Gant (can’t really remember now) on the first big play, the whole WR corp got fired up and started making plays. SS actually threw a couple poor balls on the big ones, but the WRs went up and made plays. The 2nd deep ball to Gant was way under-thrown but he made a spectacular catch over the DB. In prior games, that would have been an incomplete pass at best. On Kirkwood’s TD the ball was a good 2 yards behind, but he turned and made a nice backpedaling catch and hung on as the defender tried to jar it loose.
I’ve been saying this WR group has very good talent, looks like they finally got the confidence to match their physical abilities. They have been getting open deep in each game but the QBs haven’t been able to connect or no time to throw.
After watching SJSU on Friday, next weeks game is winnable if the offense can just believe in their abilities. SJSU appears to have regressed under the new coaching staff, plus the defense has no speed to match UH’s WRs. Again, the key is the OL being able to give time to throw.

If sports is supposed to develop character as well as the physical qualities, Sean Schroeder is one of the best examples I’ve seen this far. The guy’s toughness is well known, he never complains, keeps a positive outlook and when his time came…he made the most of it. Most importantly, in my opinion, he left the field dissatisfied with his performance. This is the quintessential team mate and student with a high character. He’ll do well in life regardless of what he chooses to do, wherever he chooses to be.

Manoa#1,~most of us here on the blog are R Warrior faithful. At times we second guess coach Chow’s decisions but try to hang in there and still root for “our” team. Since you are “one of us” (faithful), maybe you should just do the same. After all its the only college team here on these beautiful islands. Bite your tongue if you have different opinions about what’s happening here. Go back to last night’s blog. Because I had guests over my house watching the game, I couldn’t get on the blog until after the game was over. I started to read where I left off and, already knowing the outcome of the game, John’s comments were hilarious. If you are John or even if you are not, you can read how foolish he seems. What you write here is permanent and may bite you in you butt in the future.

the small crowd that hung around through the rain till the end was very loud. great to see the die-hard fans and tremendous support from them every game. whatta great class-act crowd, and no booing (at least near our south end-zone seats) even after the pick-6, making the score 42-3.

I hope the Warriors have recovered their swag with this game. I hope they know what it takes to get the job done. I hope they know you can’t just show up and expect good things.
Seems they played on a whole different level than the first 3.
The game plan was to move things around for Woolsey and had some success but when SS came in and with regular pass protect he turned the lights out. Some communication gaps with receivers initially. Some went zig when he pass went zag but hopefully it’ll be worked out. Too much untimely penalties in the red zone. Went backwards too many times.
Keep working Warriors and good things will happen. Heal up and kick butt next week.

It is amazing what a difference confidence can make. There have been much easier plays that Gant, BRS, and others have missed in the past. Schroeder seemed to try and make quicker decisions and just get the ball in a spot where his receivers had a chance to make a play. Since Chow started, there have been plays there but we just could not execute, the QB would make the throw and the WR would drop the ball or the WR would be wide open and the QB could not hit them. Last night was the first time against a quality opponent that I saw the whole offense on the same page and a look that they wanted the ball more than the opponent’s defense.
I can accept a loss when the team plays like it did towards the end…They never gave up and made a game of it with the 25th ranked team in the nation…There is HOPE!
With 16 secs left i dont think we needed to go to the hail mary but i got no complaints though hell of an effort.
Fresnil is now ranked #23. It has a horrible defense and a very weak schedule, but is undefeated. I don’t like them at all, but since we already played them and lost, I hope they win out and get us some of that BCS money.
I like the fact that UH was not intimidated by Fresno and their #25 ranking and their All American QB (who comes as advertised).
Props to the team for not giving up. Sean Schroeder could be another Dan Robinson (beaten up in 98, redeemed himself in 99).

If Kiffen is ok with taking $120k/yr, I’d be ok with having him on the UH staff. I think he’s a crappy coach, but he is a very strong recruiter. Coaches at high profile schools still have high profile recruiting connections. If nothing else, use Kiffen as a recruiting coordinator with OC title for a few years until he leaves for a bigger job.
It’s not like Kiffen is going to get any head coaching jobs anytime soon after 1yr at Oakland, ditching Tennessee after 1yr, and a total failure at USC. He will need to take a small job or sit out a few years before getting another HC opportunity.
Well I know he/she/it is annoying but I still think the best response to manoa#1/Steve/IT/lava or whatever the name, is no response. Although lightheartedness and amusement will probably be ok too. When the comments are taken seriously it feeds the need to engage in some sick and hateful interaction. So let’s have fun with it or ignore it.
Don’t be down on Ikaika. He’s still young. Don’t forget about the rough starts other UH QBs had as young freshmen/sophomores – Ralph Cherry, Garrett Gabriel, Warren Jones, Michael Carter, among others.

Thanks tom Mui. After the game last night I told the hub he would be fired by this morning. Had I been a betting woman the spread in Vegas was 22-1 if Kiffen would get fired after this game.
Hawaii game was so exciting. I was texting the big boy last night until 2:30 this morning. Exhausted today. And with all is USc stuff going on…crazy here in South Bay. But Kiffen got what he deserved. Good riddance. Whoever the next coach is, they will still have huge problems. Recruiting being one of them. Who the hell wants to play for USC anymore?
Going back to a few days ago… It was mentioned that Jason Gesser is in Wyoming. I think he’s the ideal target for UH as QB coach or possibly OC, but again, can’t worry too much about it until the season is over.

Timmy Chang might be another candidate for QB coach, but he’s a R & S guy, so I don’t know. I have a feeling that Jordan Wynn is being groomed for the permanent position.
How ironic, Chow spent the last year and a half trying to rid UH of the spread Offense only to finally realize that it ACTUAL works. I guess you can teach old dogs new tricks. Now where does he go from here, does he keep running the spread or does he go back to the old stale offense.

I be the first to tell you all that we left after the ‘pick-6’, but on our way out we say the 1st and 2nd TDs and we were all clapping. Fact is, the same clapping carried over into the car, all the way home, and into the living room until the last hail Mary – I too thought that Woosley would have been a stronger arm on the last 2 passes.
Like most of you, very happy for the last part of the 3rd quarter and the 4th. However, fans left “early” because of what happened – offensively and defensively UH was terrible – how can one say the defense was solid after giving up 35 points and the offense had 3 pts?
Most happy to see that Coach Chow has moved away from his prior positions in the 1st 3 games and gave Woosley good training by starting – if he gets more, then when Zwahlen comes back in 2015, Woosley will be game experienced and can help train Zwahlen for 2015 and 2016 and be ready to start in 2017. Also, time will allow Tuitele, if he signs with UH, to redshirt and learn the system. Any good high school sophomores QBs in Hawaii or on the mainland?
Looking forward to San Jose game as the offense and defense will be primed to go – first win and 1 -4 rather than 0 – 5 as some have predicted.

Last night we all saw for the first time what this Offense can actually do with the right Scheme. For the first time in a long time the Offense was EXCITING. This is what the fans want to see. I tell you what, if Chow comes out with that old stale boring Offense next week then I’m going to be highly ticked off and you should be too.

I wonder if Woolsey wasn’t pulled because he lacked practice time on the 4-wide sets rather than because of the interception he threw? Schroeder is familiar with the sets because he played through them last season. Graham isn’t comfortable in shotgun.

Great win and glad I stayed for the second half.
I liked SS and his experience, and I liked the wide open passing offense– I wish Tsai did not tell us that was caused by the injury. But our ability to go to 4 wides and passing on every down when we lost our TE’s was positive. It was the right thing to do at that stage of the game anyway. SS’s passing also opened the run for Lakalaka. To the critics of the Oline, last night they blocked well and opened nice holes– the issue is really the QB’s holding the ball too long with an offense designed for the pass in three seconds. Last night SS played quicker and it made all the difference.

As for where USC will go….this is within the last couple of hours:Athletic director Pat Haden will immediately begin the process of evaluating candidates, which could include Jon Gruden, Chris Petersen, Steve Sarkisian, Kevin Sumlin, Tim DeRuyter, James Franklin, and Pat Fitzgerald.
How will the coaching search play out?
Do not expect Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio or St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher to emerge in the search. Del Rio is a former USC player who earned All-American honors and was the MVP of the 1985 Rose Bowl. Fisher is a USC graduate.
Do expect many to voice their opinion including Keyshawn Johnson and a bevy of former Trojans that are now in the NFL.
At some point, Jon Gruden is going to return to coaching. Gruden said last week, “I do get the itch a lot. I miss it tremendously.” Though most believe when he returns, it will be as an NFL coach, perhaps Los Angeles and the USC history is enough to entice Gruden to, at the least, consider the job. Given the job is now open, there is plenty of time to evaluate the pros and cons.
Would Chris Petersen (48) leave Boise State for USC? One thing to remember, per his contract, is that Petersen must provide written (or email) notice at least 24 hours before interviewing for a coaching job at another college or with a professional team.
Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian (39) coached under Pete Carroll at USC from 2005-2008. Since becoming the Washington head coach in 2009, Sarkisian has led the program to records of 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6, and 4-0.

When ST mentions SSchroeder moving people around with his eyes, it reminds me of either Moniz or Brennen, one of whom I think said once you know how to do that, the game becomes easy. Hopefully SSchroeder is now at that point. One thing is evident: SSchroeder is determined, as is the whole O. If they play with that determination, good things will happen.

The Team played like Warriors last night. I was in my hotel room in Eugene, OR with my laptop streaming the game under the covers so the monitor light didn’t wake up my roommate who was sleeping. The Oregon Cal game was terrible bc of a monsoon of rain, left at halftime but silver lining, got to watch the 2nd half UH game. The game was free on MWC.com but I had to pay Hilton $10 for Internet.
My heart was pounding, my eyes got big. I did fist pumps, great to see the Offense wake up and the D and ST rising up. After seeing the UO, OSU, UW and even some USC fans (connecting flight in Portland) leaving to go back to real work and life, feels great to be a Hawaii Rainbow Warrior fan, 2000 miles from home. After the game, I fell asleep listening to 1420.
Here is an interesting side not on the Lane Kiffin firing: When USC was recruiting Kiffin for the coaching position, they wanted him so badly that they were willing to do anything. Anything consisted of them giving him a $500k loan towards the purchase of his $5.5 million home in Manhattan Beach. Of course there was a catch, and it was that if Kiffin was ever fired or quit, he would be required to immediately give USC back the money along with interest.
Kiffin reportedly makes well over $2 million a year at USC, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has $500k liquid cash sitting around waiting for USC to come knocking at the door. Kiffin has not commented on whether or not he can make good on this stipulation, but it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Proper execution with all 11 doing what they’re suppose to do is the best offense.
Again, it’s not the type of offense, the formation, the tempo or the play itself. It’s about everyone doing their job.

If you were paying attention you would see that Chow totally changed up the route combo’s. Thats the main reason for the second half outburst. So yeah I say type of O matters…
Also the D did a great job of giving SS a short field.

jonj, good call on TJ. His play has really elevated this year. I saw him made a fantastic tackle after chasing down the Fresno RB before he got the corner. TJ started in the middle of the field and had the speed to track down and make the play. If he didn’t make the tackle, it surely would have been a 8-10 yard run as the containment was being blocked. It won’t go down in any highlight reel, but it’s was very impressive.
Can’t wait for Kaumeyer to remove the training wheels for Kennedy. In the limited action he’s seen, he’s been getting penetration and has been disrupting the offense. He’s going to be a monster for UH in the future. I’m 100% fine with him only getting a handful of plays because he’s not far removed from a knee sprain, and he’s just a true freshman. He’s only going to get stronger. Plus he’s got great speed for a big guy. He actually made a tackle after chasing down the RB about 8 yards down field. If Kennedy adds 15lbs of muscle, he’s going to be unstoppable in the MWC the next few seasons.
Lakalaka is pretty darn good also. Very nimble for a big stocky RB. What I like most is that he’s secure with the ball. Actually, UH RB ball security has been very good all year. I don’t recall Lakalaka putting it on the ground at all this year.
183… UH was forced to go 4 wide as Pu’u-Robinson went down with injury. Moleni DNP, so there were no TE available in 2nd half.
Also the offense looked better because the OL finally did their job and protect the QB. Schroeder still got hit several times, but he was much better at being decisive and launching the ball on time.
Woosley got his chance, but he’s still very raw and is a project QB at this point. I want him to get more reps, but Graham is the #1 and Schroeder emphatically took the #2 (possibly open the door for the #1). As the #3 he’s only going to get sparse reps. He doesn’t have pocket discipline, like most mobile QBs. Chows offense, like the RnS, depends on the QB reading and going through progressions. Woosley takes off running if his 1st option isn’t there. That’s ok if your able to pick up yards, but it drives coaches nuts because it opens up the QB to getting hurt and often times a running QB will miss the check down that would have been a larger play.

Just the patterns that the receivers run. Usually we’re very conservative but in the second half Chow opened up the playbook and actually starting calling 4 Verts, Levels ect. Basically he started running concepts that were closer to the RnS then the WCO… Also going to 11 personnel helped.
I really wish I could see the All-22 film though so I could see more of what Chow was calling :/
TE Clark Evans was having a rough night. Saw him ralphing over and over during the game. Lined up at H-back, spewing right as the ball was being snapped, running off onto the sidelines and spraying everyone around him. Football is a TOUGH sport. Shades of Colt Brennan circa 2005.
BTW, Scott Harding gets my vote for MVP. I just love his punting style. It eliminates any possibility of a punt return, because he punts away from the returner, and no need for hang time, because he’s running around before his punts, giving his team time to get down the field. One of these days, he’s going to take off for big yardage as well.

UP early in LA and it is just plain AWESOME with the air feeling brisked and sun slowly coming out. Up here living in Ladera Heights all my neighbors slowly getting into their vehicles ready to tackle the 405 freeway while the retired folks wake up to a cup of java and waving at me reaching for their LA Times paper. Full day planned ahead with my Hawaii gear on as a proud former player I will always be and just tickle pink on our boy’s come back performance vs. Fresno State.
Momentum should be sky high with coaches and players practicing HARD this week for first win vs. San Jose State. More then anything just COMPETE as I hope the fans come out at Aloha Stadium and FILL those seats !
Don’t like to see lower stands empty like that as how can we expect these FINE young men to represent the 808 when seats are empty with out one cheer coming from that empty orange section. SUPPORT the team be THERE as only TRUE Warrior fans should do !
Wish Coach Chow nothing but SUCCESS and hope the naysayers find it in their hearts to bring positive vibes as if you see his facial expression the man wants to WIN and is capable of getting it done as he needs positive thoughts not negative !

Gossip and USC: USC football fans, are you ready for at least 10 more weeks of this? The University of Houston head tennis coach, Patrick Sullivan, was at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday night and he thinks he saw Jack Del Rio, the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.
The timing on this one is interesting: The Broncos had just finished whipping the Eagles Sunday afternoon, 52-13, and does it seem feasible that Del Rio’s would then hop on a plane and head to LA and interview for the USC coaching vacancy? Anything’s possible in these wild and wacky coaching searches, including the 50-year old Del Rio, who starred for the Trojans in the early 80s, interviewing for the job on the same day Lane Kiffin was fired.
But I’d be surprised if Pat Haden went the NFL route. My early guesses at Haden’s top targets would be Chris Petersen of Boise State, Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M or Steve Sarkisian of Washington. Here’s the problem – I’m not sure any of those guys would jump at the opportunity to coach the Trojans right now. NFL franchises will be courting Sumlin in a few months. Sarkisian is building a formidable program at Washington. Petersen seems to love Montana Idaho and life in Boise.
But we’re barely 24 hours into the USC search..
