UH-UCI rewind

As was written on the other thread, they put up a tough fight but a loss is still a loss.

Not an excuse but it’s a young team playing their third road match in four days. Anteaters played Thursday vs. UCSB, at UCSD Saturday, all of a 60-minute freeway drive.

Again no excuses but a young team on a tough road trip in a tough place to play against the defending NCAA champs. that bad rotation to open Set 5 was the killer. Down 5-0 before even serving. Mehring kill, Sedore hitting error, Sedore blocked, Sedore blocked, kill by Tillie.

Why why why is Timmer only being set once per game? One thing about Hawaii setters is they constantly go back to the same hitter despite being blocked twice already. Sedore, Sedore , Sedore – it’s like Hartong Hartong Hartong. At some point, you have to go to someone else. Maybe the momentum would have been with UH had they won set 4 instead of set 3.

Timmer got set once because he wasn’t in the front row all that much. As for Sedore, he had the hot arm but they got stuck in a rotation and he was the bail-out option.
Wasn’t there but it sounds like a lot of Sedore’s sets were off broken plays and it was always Ramos setting him.

Despite UH being #11 playing #1, they kept it pretty close. Honestly, I thought they were going to be swept in 3. I think had Siki played a little better, they would have won. They need Sedore, Marks and Siki to all be playing well on the same night for them to beat a really good team.

I agree I would like them to give Timmer a shot to hit from the middle, Holt’ and west are struggling.

Maybe that’s Wade’s system. Last season only one middle (West) got a decent amount of sets. The other, Jarod Lofy, averaged less than a kill/set for most of the season even though he hit for an acceptable percentage. I noticed that when West wasn’t in this year, either Holt or Averill was getting very few sets.

Alohilani, have never put much weight on the polls, especially the men’s, where there’s 16 people taking their best guess. This season has shown that anyone can beat anyone on a given night. If UH had pulled out the five-setters they lost, they’d be 10-4 and 7-4 MPSF, not far behind BYU at 8-2. Of course, if they had dropped the four they won, they’re 1-13 and 1 and 10.
Agree that Sedore, Marks and Zarkovic all need to be playing well but the passing also has to be there. Ramos had 11 digs last night, meaning someone else set the ball. And, listening to the radio, Kauwe made many refereneces to the pass being too tight to the net or there being no real option for Ramos other than to be predictable.
We’ll see what happens tonight. You have to take into account that this is the first time many of these players have been in these venues and on such a tough road trip. Zarkovic a freshman, Timmer, Sedore, Averill, Marks, Holt all sophomores. Ramos a new fulltime setter didn’t make these kind of trips with UOP, Olsen and Phelps junior transfers. West a junior in his second year with UH.

Thanks for the insight. For a young team, they aren’t playing that bad. By the time their senior year comes around, they should be really good. I just hope they keep Charlie around to finish what he started with all the recruits.
