Prolific RB commits to UH
Harris “Home Run” Ross, a running back from Pittsburg (Calif.) High told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors.
Ross, who is 5 feet 11 and 198 pounds, rushed for 464 yards and seven touchdowns in a game this past weekend. The performance exceeded his goal of a 300-plus yards and seven touchdowns
Ross has received inquiries from schools, including Washington, the past few days. But he said he remains faithful to the Warriors. He also praised assistant coach Lewis Powell, the point recruiter.

It was a scene reminiscent of when Dorothy walked into a land of Technicolor when the Rainbow Warriors yesterday entered the renovated football locker room.
What was thought to be a fiscal and bureaucratic impossibility became a reality.
Pastor Joe Onosai, a former UH football player and Dallas Cowboy draft selection, led the blessing ceremony.
Then head coach Norm Chow thanked UH facility administrators Teri Chang and Sis Finau, Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple, the engineer, and past players and coaches.
Chow then told the current players: “You’ve earned this.”
Chow reminded the players to keep their lockers clean and organized.
After that, the players were divided into groups. The senior scholarship players were given first choice of lockers. That was followed by the juniors, and so forth.
The selection system rewarded the players who had invested the most in the program. Fifth-year senior George Daily-Lyles sat in his locker, absorbing the moment.

The players were told they could wait until today to move their belongings from the rustic locker room they had used since the start of training camp. Few waited.

After the locker was selected, each player received a personal plate with his name and hometown. There will be re-orders because three players want “Honolulu” switched to “Kalihi.”
Jim Rodden, a former Warrior, is donating furniture for the shared-space area.

I like that the players aren’t grouped by position.
Center Ben Clarke’s locker is in the middle of the defensive linemen’s lockers. He liked the spot, and declined offers to move.

Good morning Tsaikos! I was able to get a sneak peek of the locker room the other week and it’s a HUGE upgrade from what we had before. So glad that it’s finally done and the players can move in. This will now be part of the tours that are given to recruits!!
The architecture firm for this project is Next Design. Some of you might know Sleez who is a partner in the company. Last year, while in Utah for the BYU game, Coach Chow arranged for a few of us to check out the locker room being built at Utah and the locker room at BYU. It gave Sleez ideas what Coach Chow wanted. One of the important features was having an area where the football players can hang out and relax. I think they got the most out of the limited space. Congratulations to Next Design for a successful project.
One interesting/funny story about the tour at BYU. It was scheduled for a few hours before the game. We were walking around their athletic complex and taken into their locker room. While in there, the BYU players just finished their pregame walk thru and returned to find 3 guys wearing UH shirts in there. I am sure some players didn’t appreciate it being so close to game time but they were cool about it.

Very very nice. Having had not only the old metal lockers of yesteryear, but also on the other side of the locker room designated for walk-ons and freshmen, it provides a stark reminder of how thing once were, and where we are now.

In the spirit of the intellectual debate that goes on daily on this blog concerning football, I want to frame a question to everyone that might perhaps provide the underpinnings for a robust discourse: or what is the appropriate place for football in Hawai’i and our society in general?
Three recent articles make interesting suggestions and posits on both the value and placement of football in our current society:

and a recent piece in “The Atlantic” entitled, How Sports are ruining High School” (as it is in the current issue it is not available online yet)
Just to get the debate started, consider the following: the US spends more tax payer money on on high school athletics than it does on math, which is counter to most industrialized countries in the world (we also lag contemporary countries in math and science);
that a recent study of 30,000 students at the U of Oregon found that when the football team does well, the grades for males goes down in the same semester;
that in school districts that have had to eliminate football, GPAs and college applications went up;
or all of the rather disturbing information and data that has come to the surface in the last decade, about the long-term cognitive effects on both college and NFL players.
The article that is most interesting is that of long time NFL linebacker, and CAL alum, saying knowing what he knows now, if he had a son ( he has three daughters) he would not allow him to play football. When you read the article you can obviously can tell he is torn with his decision, and that his is the proverbial love-hate relationship.
My point of this exercise is not to convince anyone to any particular perspective, but to illuminate some facts about the game we all love. I played football my entire life into my early 20s, and make no mistake about it, I was not a star of any kind. In fact, the highlights of being at UH were being on the 3rd team for a number of practices, and once being on the 2nd team because of a rash of injuries. That said, I too also have very mixed feeling about the state of our game.
One can tell by my recent and frequent postings, I love two things: Hawai’i and football. But, my own experience living through many phases of my life has started me to question the great priority I lend to football–the great past-time. Just from the guys I played with, I know several folks who have served long federal sentences, who have died quite early in life, been murdered, faced addiction,or just have had a difficult time finding their niche in their professional life. So, I sort of asked myself, the same question Scott Fujita contemplated–would I allow a child of mine to play football?
And I am torn with my own response. Many a day, a nephew or even a niece has seen old UH practice pictures of me or ones at big games at Aloha Stadium, (of course all dressed up on the sideline picking my nose, or looking for oranges on the bench) and still I can see their pride–they glow and speak about you in such hushed tones. And the friendships are ones only sweating, puking, drinking and bleeding can provide–they are and were meant for a lifetime. But, in the end while I never had children, my answer, to the question of what would I think about my child playing college football–although it would be his decision alone to make–is sadly, I would prefer not.
I am most fortunate that I found myself and the best part of myself after football…and so, like with any hindsight, which has a remarkable ability to be always clairvoyant, minds is a perspective knowing that I had still great things to look forward to as a husband, uncle, lawyer, professor, mentor and friend. And to risk the potential of such events for a loved one would be too painful.
Now this is, as I always say, just my own two cents—but, curious to see where other folks are on the priority of football as it applies to both society and education.

This locker room upgrade was long over due and only step one. UH needs to keep on improving the rest of the Althletic facilities too!
What else is needed for the players? Is there a non-profit that we can donate to that will use the money towards improving facilities for the football program? However I would like to have assurance that the money would not get squandered through bureaucratic rigmarole.
boolakanaka mahalo for your thoughts regarding the priority of football in our society and education. As we all know, the game of football is an extremely physical game. Unfortunately so many individuals have struggled after leaving the game but the games will continue because society will not allow that to happen. The important thing at all levels from youth leagues, high school and to college is that education is stressed as a top priority. Our youth and high school coaches should always make this a priority for each student/athlete. Shame on high school coaches who allow a student to slide by because of the greater need to win games. I have witnessed top all-state high school players who can only read at the 8th grade level receive college scholarships and unable to make it. Despite some of the short comings, there are others who have gone on to succeed as a productive individual and embraced the educational opportunities from playing the sport. I commend Coach Chow for trying to instill discipline and commitment towards education.

Geezus, the football team could certainly use more players like JOE ONOSAI when he was in his hey days…he was certainly one of the best linemen UH ever had…….Tough, Resilient, Tremendous Character, Fortitude, Perseverance……..
#21 Haleakala, which is the result of the Bob Nagatani Academic Center (sorry, I don’t know the true name of the place). He wanted a hand in where his large donation to the University goes so it wouldn’t get lost in UH’s or State’s “bureaucratic rigmarole”.
ST what’s up next on the athletic dept facilities improvement list? Great job on this project but on to the next one. Continuous improvement has got to be the norm to compete with the big boys.

Haleakala – Na Koa is the booster club that supports the football team. The biggest expense is summer school. It allows the players to be on campus, take classes and continue training through the summer.

boola – there’s been a number of reports on “HBO Real Sports” about the concussion issue in sports, especially football. A researcher they interviewed a few months ago, found that there’s a threshold of the number of hits a player receives in a season before it affects him mentally. Last night, they had a story on the NFL lawsuit. Didn’t realize that there’s an increased incidence of ALS among football players.
I’m glad I didn’t have to make that decision about whether or not to allow my son to play football.
This was 15 years overdue, but it’s great to see upper & lower campus finally get their act together to improve the locker rooms.
Nice morale booster before the road trip to Reno.
Hopefully an electronic security surveillance system was also installed with the renovated locker room……to mitigate against the property damage and theft problems that were previously being experienced.

Junior quarterback Cody Fajardo’s availability for Nevada’s football game against Hawaii will be a game-time announcement, coach Brian Polian said Tuesday, and if he is unable to go, redshirt freshman Tyler Stewart will make his first start.
— QB 2 Combs has torn ACL and is out indefinitely.
— Fajardo not cleared for practice as of yesterday, but participated in drills.
— RB 3 Solomon will get the start even if the top 2 RBs are ready. Their system is RB friendly, so doesn’t really matter… Much like the QB in the RnS under JJ.
I hope the Wahine Softball facility upgrades are next as they are much needed and very deserving. Of course, I am sure all the programs feel they are deserving and have been in line for a long time.

boola: I’m not sure. I think with anything, With anything, there needs to be a balance (even high school sports, there are cases like friday night lights. where the kids are football gods, peak at age 18, and then work the rest of their lives at walmart reminiscing about almost winning state). using sports to augment the student experience to produce well rounded people is one thing, making football the de facto core mission of the university/school is something else.
The vast majority of athletic depts in the FBS are running in the red (because of football) and are being subsidized by the academic side of the house, with coaches getting paid significantly more than professors (even though the core mission of the university isn’t to play football, but to educate minds). It’s complicated. big time college football is a big business. It’s semi-pro football played under the flag of amateurism and “student-athlete” and I would guess that the average person associates schools with the success of their football and basketball programs rather than their academics. for example, everyone knows about university of florida and tim tebow, not very many people know about harvey mudd and the claremont colleges.
you could make the argument that football is bad for universities (at least at the FBS level) and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree. but then again, football, for all its flaws in the big business BCS era, does give opportunities for an education that players from certain socioeconomic and racial backgrounds may not have simply because of lack of opportunities otherwise, but there are also a lot of reports of these players, going to a football factory school because they were sold the dream of the nfl (even though soething like only 1% of college players actually make it to a mini camp), and aren’t provided the guidance to maximize their opportunities to get an education (or probably shouldn’t have been accepted into the school to begin with), use up four years of eligibility, and are cast out on the street bagging groceries or working at walmart after making the university millions of dollars.
Football Locker renovations apparently bid out in 2 separate phases and awarded to 2 different contractors (4/24 & 6/14) totaling approx. $1.4M construction cost.

gobows… I’m sure Fajardo will play. He was reported wearing a heavy knee brace and was still limping around yesterday. I doubt he’ll be 100%. Dual threat QBs with leg issues typically lose a ton of effectiveness.
I highly doubt Polian wants to trot out a RS Freshman QB that’s clearly not ready yet. A 70% Fajardo will be much better than a QB seeing his first D1 start.
I’m thinking Polian will instruct Rolo for more called handoffs. It’ll still look like read-option, but I’m sure Polian doesn’t want Fajardo taking any unnecessary hits.

Thanks to all those who helped to install a new wing in the Locker Room. Congratulations for your all your efforts have become a reality! But now I would print a few words about another comment I read here a few days ago. Someone printed info about the good stuff they have at Boise State and suggested that Maybe if we continued to pump more money in the Rainbow Warrior program we could have better recruits and a winning season like that of Boise’s. Whoa! Lets not put the cart before the horse. We got to get behind our team first. WE have a lot of good local talent here in Hawai’i. Chow’s been recruiting a good number of them. Remember back in the days when a good big high school player, 6′ 4″ and 280 lbs, would most always go to a mainland school. It seems that the tide is changing and hopefully it continues that way.
Some would say that our baseball stadium is the house that Derek Tatsuno built. Chris Peterson did wonders at Boise State. Okay but Dave Shoji is Simply remarkable and how about Bob Coolen? And how about new coach NaGAMINE? When Dave Shoji goes recruiting the potential recruits say “Hawaii Calls”! And with all due respect! Got some good stuff here. Root for the pride of Hawai’i! Lord let it be the envy of the athletes on the mainland. Go Rainbows Warriors!. Amen.

The “H” logo you see in the pictures is not a single, central logo, but interspersed throughout the facility (in the carpet). Not exactly Brazilian hardwood with inlaid design (ala Oregon Ducks), but better than what was there before. UH Football Lockerroom renovation = $1.6 mil. Oregon football facility = $68 mil. We have a ways to go.
If it is Fajardo, he can best believe that UH’s defense will pin their ears back and come after him. I personally don’t think he will play.

Yup……definitely referring to the incompetent Pac-12 officiating crew totally blowing it……denying Wisconsin the FG attempt to win the game over ASU this past Saturday. Their ineptness reminded me of the phantom fumble that was called against SB Gerald Welch on a dropped pass that instead got returned for a gift-wrapped TD for USC at the Coliseum back in 2003. Even the SC fans that I sitting next to at that game thought that the call was totally bogus.

It’s good to know where you came from and while I kinda don’t really wanna know how badly things were or looked in that locker room, I am pretty curious. (Eeks – Pictures anyone?)
Good work and thank you to those who generously contributed their loving efforts toward the success of the Warrior Football Team via this project!
“Little” things like this (= a comfortable functional locker room to be proud of) go a long way to making players feel welcome, cared for, loved, appreciated, and respected, and go a long way to helping them feel like putting their heart and soul on the field.
All of the changes in the pics are gorgeous and beeeeeutiful and finally a feature the athletic program can be proud of 🙂

I think 600k to play Colorado is on the low side considering how far the Warriors have to travel. If not mistaken, Nevada got paid 600k to play UCLA and that’s just a short trip. I think the Colorado might be lowballing UH.

Polian on his radio show today said that Fajardo is 50/50 at this point and will be a game day decision. Tyler Stewart will be ready if Fajardo can’t go. Also said Dante Mayes may burn his redshirt if needed.
Polian got annoyed when he heard supporters saying that he should have pulled out Devin Combs if he knew that the injury could be a torn ACL instead of a sprained knee.

I like this coaching staff’s unrelenting recruiting efforts. Very impressed with the talent they are bringing in. There’s no doubt that PAC-12 schools will now come into the picture. They always do with many UH verbal commits.
Norm Chow is like Gib Arnold, non stop terrific recruiting. Tough time coaching.

Stoked about Ross but he’s still gonna take his OV’s to other schools. He listed his 3 dream schools as Cal, UCLA and Oregon State. Hope we can hold on to him.

gib arnolds recruiting sucks. period. if you haven’t noticed, most of his guys are projects that nobody else wanted. his good recruits come from other countries. half his recruits never make it to school.
gib is nowhere near coach chow in recruiting to hawaii.
gib is the exact opposite of nc. he doesnt get results from his recruiting, but he’s able to win some games. and now he finally has a ball handler, expect another 18-20 win season.

The last HS RB I heard of who scored 7 TD’s in one game was last seen hitting paydirt against the Vols…
Seniors are unlikely to transfer
I don’t think Stutz is completely out of the picture. He really only has had a week and a half of practice. I think he’ll work his way into the rotation. Especially with the performance (or lack thereof) of the current crop of receivers.
Harris Ross, 4.44 speed, squats 454, smooth as silk, changes direction at high speed, uses blockers very well. Good size at 5’11” and 195 lbs. He might be a steal if he progresses each year.
Let’s hope we keep Ross…It’s a shame if Stuts doesn’t play…

It’s been a couple of years since Gib had a 18-20 win season. But I think this will be a strong year with a true PG and next even stronger with Chan-Webster and the other redshirt.
Wily, St Juste, Lakalaka, ross and iosefa we are DEEP at running back now its a matter of can they pass block and if the o line can create a lane for them to run through. Highly impressed St-Juste, wily, and ross having me looking forward to the future but as of right now glad to have iosefa back hope our offense catches a spark this week.
18-20 wins for UH basketball this year is a pretty bold prediction.
Oregon football facility = $68 mil.
UH Football Locker room = $1.6 mil.

Shallow kids who wanna play for a team because a facility looks nice or cool uniforms can go somewhere else.
