• Head coach Norm Chow today reiterated that the players injured in the Oregon State — Brenden Daley, Trayvon Henderson and Kawika Borden — should be ready to play in this week’s game against Nevada.
• Still, there is no timetable for the return of receiver Allen Sampson, who still is not 100 percent from a hamstring injury. Sampson could be an option as a kickoff returner when he heals.
• The schedule could have been a lot tougher for Nevada. It initially was scheduled to play Oregon last week. That would have meant playing UCLA, Oregon and Florida State before facing UH.
• Punahou defensive end Canton Kaumatule , who is only a junior, lived up to his billing. Recruiters are pleased that he has two younger brothers.
• While the athletic department is set to take over the RainbowTique stores — think more Under Armour products — the next step is the most important. The department needs to either control the H logo or get a better cut of the rights fees. That’s the difference between writing/producing a song and singing it. Negotiations are on-going.
• The Good Neighbor — A-House — spent a lot of time and his own resources creating rock gardens at UH. It’s a shame that people are “borrowing” the rubber borders. I’m sure they’ll return them.
• There reportedly is a large amount of money authorized to help turn Klum Gym into a training center. Not sure what that would entail, but it does rain a lot in Manoa.

Turning Klum Gym into a what, “Training Center” oh no I can see Otto raising “stink eye” on that. What’s next to happen the Blaisdel arena torn down to open up for shopping stores and food courts. Instead of renovating FAMOUS land marks large money should be authorized on the homeless situation you have in Waikiki and Ala Moana Park as my WONDERFUL time there was filled with shock at the many carts, board houses and people old and young that just lived on the side walks / make shift tents. One moment I had there from swimming at wakiki beach, I gave my body wash to an elderly gentlemen so he can have a nice shower as my words to him “have this it’s the least I could do for you” as he smiled at me with approval. Sharing & Caring good folks of the Aloha State, a genuine affection we have that comes out when you feel empathy at that very moment. Happy Sunday Morning Tsaiko Nation !

A quick reminder that the Board of Regents will be holding a meeting with its Committees on Planning & Facilities and Budget & Finance this coming Wednesday at 8:30 am. It includes a tour of UH Manoa Facilities. Upgrades and new facilities in the lower campus are a major component – and the discussions about commercial naming rights will likely be brought up.

MPO, better to switch to “spread offense” now so other players are adjusted to that “system” come 2014 and beyond or will your current “system” allow for a smooth transition should you adopt the spread offense?
you no longer have the OL horses, like you did at previous stops in college ball, to give the QB time to find the open receiver if he is continuously under pressure – Coach Naole may improve the OL, but still need the horses to do the job!
A few thoughts:
1) After week 3, I was more impressed w/ Oregon, Florida State, Ohio State, UCLA, and UCF. Mississippi will get better and better. Watch out for them.
2) A little disappointed in Stanford’s play, winning but not convincing.
3) The NFL is so competitive you don’t know who’s going to win, even on the road. I was impressed w/ Miami and San Diego today winning outright on the road. And, how bout them Chiefs!!!!!
4) Wasn’t surprised that Punahou won easily. Tuileta is the best player overall in the State, to me anyway. Noa is very productive, 91 yards in only 4 receptions. That’s almost 23 yards per catch. Get em, Chow!
5) Wahine winning, but struggling at times. I’d like to see more dominating scores with more consistency. I think Shoji would say that they have a lot of work to do, especially blocking better.
6) Cody Fajardo was held out against Florida State because of a knee problem. Good decision. They were not going to beat FSU anyway. Expect Fajardo to be ready for Hawaii next Saturday. He’ll be a handful.
A-house, spread some ready-mix cement under the area where the borders will go in. The cement will harden around the “hook” part of the borders, and “da buggahs” going get hard “hemo” the borders.

Just curious, who’s going to the Navy game? tom-warriornation, do you still have tickets for that game?
From what I was told the Athletic department will run RainbowTique. They will be closing the stores in most of the malls. All profit will go into the general athletic account, how that will be allocated to the different sports I have no idea, but based on previous experience the non-revenue sports will suck wind as usual.
Whats funny(not really) is that when I was discussing this with Mr. Jay it came after he was complaining that the Athletic department was not getting their fair share of the money made off of the Athletic programs such as all the lost money from the stadium an on an on! In other words he felt that because football was the draw they should receive most if not all the money generated. Same with the other sports where an outside organizations was making money off of the sport.
So I asked him about how the money would be distributed once the Athletic department took over the operation. I didn’t get an answer, so then I asked him why would you not allow the booster club(softball) sell tee-shirts at the RWSS, his answer was that he wanted to set up a mobile store that would sell at the different venues. So I asked him would those monies then go to that program, he said no it would go to the general athletic account. My next question was. Well isn’t that the same thing you are complaining about, it is the draw of the Na Wahine Softball Team that is generating the sales so why should they not get the profits from those sales. He wasn’t too happy with that and he did not respond. So take it from there!!!!!

Does any of the revenue generated from Football go towards softball?
Most, not all, of the money will probably go to programs that are considered revenue-generating sports (i.e. football and basketball). It doesn’t sound fair, but that’s just the way it is at the Division I level.
29-Football is a revenue generator, and surplus revenues from football support other men’s sports as well as women’s sports.
Fajardo looked like he’s still nursing that knew injury since he was mentioned that he was seen limping on the sideline. Should be ready come this weekend. Bad thing is if he goes down, his backup is a third string QB who is raw and inexperienced since Fajardo’s backup, Devin Combs, is out with a knee injury.
Opening line was 14 point underdog for Warriors. Line movement dropped down to 10 points at one point. That was a bad beat down Nevada took against FSU, but when you consider the opponent and the injuries, its not surprising.

If Rainbowtique stores are closed at the mall locations, then hopefully the Stan Sheriff Center will be open during weekday hours……like it used to be……instead of only being open during MBB, MVB, WBB, and WVB events like it is now.
Not only is Canton living up to the billing, but…..QB Tui also looked like the real deal last night…..under constantr pressure…..but never getting rattled. Though he got sacked a few times tonight, thought that Tui definitely has improved his pocket presence from last season.
Kanawai Noa ’15 also displayed that he’s the real deal too. With Tui and TE Dakota Torres committed to become Rainbow Warriors, hopefully that’ll be a consideration for Noa…..who would an ideal SB/PR.
Ask General Growth Properties to make an in-kind contribution to the program by letting Rainbowtique operate a kiosk at Ala Moana.

I love Under Armour. If every Hawaii fan donated 1 share when they became UH Football apparel, the team would be wealthy. I bought it at 14 bucks it climbed to 115 in three years and split. It’s back up to over 75 in less then a few months.
I’m excited to see what a difference a BY week makes.

UH will beat Nevada. Nevada is super beat up and thanks to Rolo, Fajardo suffered a sprained knee vs UCD which was completely unnecessary as Rolo was calling pass plays with little time to go in the 1st half of a game they werent threatened. As Shoko reported Fajardo was still limping during the FSU game. Hard to believe he’ll be 100% Saturday. That means the read option will be a little less effective. Plus, the bad knee is his right knee, which is his plant leg. If he’s not 100%, there won’t be as much zip on his throws. It’ll be a feast for the UH defense which appears it will be 100% healthy, plus Kennedy looks like he’ll get his first action.
I think Nevada’s early success was more FSU not being focused. About mid-way through the 2nd Q, you could see reality settling in as FSU began to dominate on both sides of the ball and it was a complete mismatch of talent. FSU was opening gaping holes in the undersized Nevada DLine.

The things is, when was the last time Hawaii even won a road game? Probably at Idaho which is not too impressive. Certainly, not last year. We just have a hard time on the mainland and even taking points on the road is tough. But, our Rainbow Warriors have covered the last 2 games against PAC 12 foes so at least that’s encouraging. UNLV won their first game of the season, at home, against Central Michigan on Saturday so we will probably be underdogs for that one too. The plus is that our defense has been playing hard and is keeping us in the game, IF, our offense can help out the team by sustaining more drives and not turning the ball over. In 2 games, we have averaged 13.5 points per game. That’s not going to win much football games. So to me the key to winning in Reno is our offense. I would say that if our team scores 24 points we have a change around a score of 24-21 or 24-20. I guess what I am saying is that getting 10 points to 14 points is a good play, either straight on a parley. I’ll be in Reno for the game, haven’t been there in about 20 years. Good luck everybody!

I will also not shocked at what Punahou did to Kamehameha. Had the opportunity to coach a bunch of the kids on the defensive side of the ball and I can tell from a young age you could tell that these boys where a special group. Not only with Canton but you got Ronley Lakalaka, Boyd (Kalama) Chung, Joe (the bull) Saula, and Cole Obana. All these kids where ballers when I had them in the intermediate and they continue to be ballers today. Oh and there’s a whole lot more defensive talent coming up the Punahou ranks as we speak. Look out for names like Falcon Kaumatule, Alama Uluave, Kana’i Akana-Crabb, Noah Tufono, Jake Tufono just to name a few.
@#42, the Ivy’s always come to California to play schools like USD or Cal Poly. We played USD (Yale) about 5 years ago. We lost in the last minute. But for a Catholic school it was very disappointing to hear the terrible and foul language of their students. I had a long talk with the President of USD. They were very apologetic. So much so a letter of apology was sent to the Yale Daily News.
This year we play Cal Poly. Very excited but will be out of town as one of our own kids graduated from Cal Poly Slo. I’m a Bulldog through and through.
I always joke that we still have the most National Championships in College Football. Folks might laugh, but it’s true.
Now back to Warrior football I hope you’re right Former Athlete, we need a BIG win on the road. Need to change the momentum of road games.

45—When you say a bulldog, do you mean Yale? And no problem about the bad language and the haranguing—happens all the time. I think part of the problem is off-putting preppiness of an Ivy school, but hey we won a national championship in DIV1 hockey this past year, past all the scholarship programs of the Big 10 and Big East….no a single athletic scholarship on the team–which is sort of embarrassing for those scholly schools.
Losing two years in a row to Harvard would not be good for USD.
Definitely don’t miss the weather in the Pacific Northwest.
49–Did 6 years or so in Portland, and it can be grey–but, I don’t mind the rain. Having grown up mostly on the leeward side, the moisture was a welcome feature. Although, the falls are pretty nice, usually a relatively dry portion of the year, and great colors…although New England and being on a college campus during the fall is just about the best for me–so I am about to be a really happy camper!
Yes a Yale Bulldog house here. Yale and the Ivy’s decided in 1954 to leave the NCAA as we are an academic institution. I have no problem leaving the NCAA. You are correct there are no student athlete scholarships. I agree about USD losing. Our daughter would be 3rd generation if she is accepted into Yale. She has worked her okole off to gain admission. Our boys were never interested in leaving the West Coast or Hawaii. But our girl, has so much passion for Enviromental Sciences and law. She is also a very talented actress and Comedy Improver. My late FIL was the National Champion in Saber in 1926 from Yale. Unfortunetly even though he was offered the chance to be on the US Olympic team he was unable to participate as his family was not wealthy and he was a law student at Harvard.
It’s very interesting we are giving the medal back to Yale. I’m jumping through many hoops as the NCAA wanted to make a copy of the medal for their records and museum in Indy.
Today because we are a global world it is so difficult to be accepted as a legacy child in any Ivy League institution. I hope my daughters hard works and efforts pay off for her. But she realizes how difficult it is. She dreams if she is accepted of living in Jonathan Edwards residential college.
Is she native? My best friend is the Assist Dean for Native American Programs and House and our word has some pull…
51–Baseline, as your probably aware, would be a minimum gpa of 4.2+ and combined SAT of 2000+ or ACT 33. Yes, legacy admittees are very rare in this day and age, unless your a child of Stephen Schwarzman or you made an 8 figure donation to mother Yale.
Road Warriors!! Bring back a “W”!! Having Joey, Brenden, Treyvon, Kawaika, and Kennedy back will be a boost. Stay hydrated, esp up in that dry altitude and environment.
I doubt A-House did the rock garden to get recognition. A person who gives from his heart doesn’t seek attention. I think A-House understands the law of giving and if anyone would like to recognize his good deeds than that is fine but don’t push it on others to do so. Mahalo A-House for your good efforts.

Former UH Athlete is one of the few comments or blog I like reading as his perspective and overall game analysis always seem to be pointed and relevant in analyzing UH’s status going into the game.
Most of us are just outside kibitzers but No. 38 does seem like a former rainbow player and knows the game from the coach’s and player’s viewpoint. Just hope he is correct in his prognostication of UH winning the game with Nevada.

No doubt about that. A great coach would know he had the game in hand and call of the dogs. A coach that thinks he’s great and has chip on his shoulder will do what you saw. A coach that does what you saw and makes the excuse about not knowing whether the other team will come back does not have confidence in his team and does not know what he’s doing.
Now I’m wondering if your talking about a certain coach out in the Hawaii-Kai – Kahala area.
Oh and if you are talking about that certain coach, he just lost my respect. Not only because he did that to my alma mater but because he did that to make an example out of them. Again just a case of a coach with a chip on his shoulder and trying to make a point that he belongs.
Guess what, I would like to see him do that to the Kahuku’s, Punahou’s, and St. Louis’s of the world. Highly doubt he will ever be able to do that. JMO
#53…she has all of the requirements. ACT, check. SAT, check. GPA, check. President of 2 clubs. VP of 1 club, community service, Manager of Comedy Sportz ( appeared at Second City in Chicago last year). We don’t have 25 M to give them. Sorry but even if I could its on merit. She’s also applying over seas, St. Andrews. Northwestern is her match university. We just have to wait and see. Gosh and she still 16. Turns 17 later thus year. At that age I was worried about lunch. Just so competitive today.
FYI say a little prayer for Roman Sapolu, Jessie’s boy. Surgery tomorrow in Oregon from the Hawaii game.

The Wolf Pack was saddled with a 62-7 loss at the hands of the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium, and as Nevada prepares for its Mountain West Conference opener Saturday against Hawaii at Mackay Stadium, it is unclear who will be behind center.
“I’m not going to guess Cody’s status moving forward,” first-year coach Brian Polian said. “We’ll put out whoever is healthy, and we’ll go out and compete.”…Fajardo made the trip, dressed in street clothes, and he was still limping noticeably as he watched pregame warmups.
Combs’ (QB2) injury is the just the latest in a string of bad news regarding the health of Wolf Pack players. The top two running backs, Don Jackson (ankle) and Kendall Brock (knee) couldn’t go. Offensive lineman Connor Talbott (ankle) and cornerback Tere Calloway (knee) did not make the trip, as expected.
And freshman linebacker Travis Wilson, who was involved in a car accident Thursday and suffered a knee injury, was unable to play after trying to go during pregame warmups. Defensive end Lorenzo Devers, was also in the car and suffered a shoulder injury, and reserve offensive lineman Zach Brickell didn’t make the trip because of pneumonia, which had already affected two other players on the team.
Linebacker Jordan Dobrich (knee) and cornerback Evan Favors (shoulder) were both injured during the game. Their status this week is not known.
“If it weren’t for bad luck, we’d have no luck at all,” Polian said. “We haven’t been whole yet this year.”

That sums up the health of Nevada going into Saturday’s game. Lots of key players hurt. That’s the risk of scheduling big pay days vs big time programs.

Beware of the wounded Wolfpack. They are more dangerous and fight harder. We will be in for a tough evening. But, I feel like that Chow and Co. are due for some good luck after 2 decent PAC 12 teams, one a better defense (USC) and the other a better offense (Oregon State). Oregon St. went on the road and beat Utah on Saturday, a Utah team that beat Utah State in the first game of the season. I think it’s time to take the Rainbow Warriors this week. I’ll call it Hawaii 20, Nevada 17…..and the generous points.

Punahou is buying talent. How in the world are they able to get all these athletes into school? Punahou is no longer what grandma and grandpa thought Oahu college was!

Those “paid” talent also have the grades to make the top colleges like Stanford, Berkeley, Washington etc. Why shouldn’t they go to a school that could challenge them to their fullest?
Funny that even in the book “Hawaii” by James Michener, there is a chapter about one of the characters whose son, a talented football player for McKinley High, is approached by representatives from Punahou and offered a scholarship to play for them. He accepts and the next season tears up the gridiron for the Buff N Blue. However, he catches hell on his way home one night from the local toughs in his neighborhood of Kakaako for scoring all of those touchdowns against the Tigers.
So far we have three commitments for the top two teams in the state. That’s great!
So far five of our very own committed to stay home. Big ups to recruiting!
76. Tommui, good comeback. Don’t forget Manti Teo, who graduated from Notre Dame in 4 years. Notre Dame is a very hard school to get into. Although I doubt that the admission standards are the same for athletes, especially the scholarship sports.

When the Rainbow was put back into the name of the team, supporter shirts and a new logo should have been for sale the same day or the day after. I’m tired of lip service support from the UC.

#74 ponojr Punahou does not buy talent. When Jim Scott arrived he made it his duty to accept more Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians. But no grades are given. So they get financial aide. That is MY Punahou. Many of us were never accepted into Kamehamea. Their bad. It was who you know back then. Applied 6 times and was never accepted. Why should they not have the same opportunities for a higher education? Did you attend Punahou?
