Sunday ramblings
Because of the quirk in the schedule — the opener was this past Thursday — the Rainbow Warriors treated yesterday as a “Monday,” which meant meetings, video studies and 45 minutes of field work that involved mostly conditioning drills. (They did not practice on Friday, which was treated as a “Sunday,” and won’t practice today, because, well, it’s really Sunday and the NCAA requires a mandatory day off each week.)
One of the running back drills involved quick cuts. It doubled as a way to determine the health status of Joey Iosefa’s rehabilitated left foot. Iosefa said he did well, while acknowledging it was just a test and not the “real deal.” His availability remains in question for Saturday’s road game against Oregon State.
It also is hoped left tackle Sean Shigematsu will be ready. He has a bone bruise on his right ankle. But the condition does not require crutches or a medical boot, just a lot of teeth grinding. He’s expected to play. But Plan B is Mike Milovale moving to left tackle and Frank Loyd Jr. playing right tackle. Both did well at those positions against USC.

Offensive lineman Sully Wiefels is seeking a release from his football scholarship to transfer to a junior college. He cited personal and family reasons in his request. He was on the 64-player roster that checked into a Waikiki hotel on the eve of the USC game. The UH coaches were alerted to the request on Thursday, the day of the game, and he then was placed on the inactive list.

Can UH start to deny these scholarship releases? I know it wouldn’t necessarily benefit the team in terms of replacing the scholie, but maybe it will stop kids from being so quick to do it. It seems to happen a lot here. Or is it a common occurrence at programs across the country?
Wow! Did Grimes fall that far on defense? Or is there a real hope he can help as a receiver?
I’d like to see Grahm lateral the ball then run out to receive a pass.

Eastern Washington showed what a mobile QB can do. That was the difference in their win over OSU. I wish Graham uses his quick feet.
Not sure if Grimes fell behind or Bowens ascended rapidly.

Too bad about losing OG Wiefels.
Kinda thought that it was strange when I saw that Wiefels wasn’t dressed for the SC game……hanging out with the other OL (Dew, Sai, Hollis) who didn’t dress either……considering that he was listed as the back-up RG (behind Lefotu).
Noticed that only 9 OL (Shigematsu, Afusia, Clarke, Lefotu, Loyd, Milovale, Koloamatangi, Griffin, Urban) dressed for the SC game. Dejon Allen dressed and warmed up with the DL.
Hopefully OL depth doesn’t become an issue this season…..with CWM and Loeffler now medically retired. No doubt that CWM would’ve been in the 2-deep at OG otherwise.
Losing Sully hurts the depth…Hopefully, we have more in reserve, as there will be injuries during the course of the year.
Grimes belongs on the defense…I don’t see him cracking the offensive lineup anytime during the year.
Bowens spelled Ne’Quan……so might’ve ascended past fellow true frosh CB Anthony Pierce.
Grimes was listed as a back-up to Maggitt…..who never left the field.

Some good news on some ex-warriors….yeah, Green and Salas ( And I apologize as the way I read the eligibility per the the following: The rules for eligibility for the practice squad are as follows (via the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement):
(a) The Practice Squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during their only Accrued Season(s). An otherwise eligible player may be a Practice Squad player for a third season only if the Club by which he is employed that season has at least 53 players on its Active/Inactive List during the entire period of his employment.
Nonetheless, good news for him…..
From what I understand, there is a medical condition with Winchester-Makainai in which he puts himself at some risk for a serious injury if he were to get hit the wrong way. The coaches like him — heck, everybody likes the guy — but there were concerns about the potential physical consequences. Also, UH still has available scholarships for non-initials, so it wasn’t as if his football scholarship was given to another player.
I really think we should put Griffin and Koloamatangi in at the two tackle spots and Milovale back to guard. Those two have the most potential out there and I can’t imagine them doing worse than our current oline?? Atleeast they have size and could probably move some people in the run game. I must not have been watching the same game but did not think Loyd showed very well. I know what they are talking about when they were saying he needs to add a nasty side. Never seen a olinemen that looked so timid and like he didn’t want to hurt the other team. Nothing against him personally, he is probably a good person and I wish him the best, but I don’t think he should be in the starting lineup.
Grimes was listed on the two-deep chart, but in practices, he was not on the second team. In practices, Brian Clay, Barry Higdon and Anthony Pierce rotated as the fourth corners.

They want Griffin and Koloamatangi to seize jobs. There are some things that need to be worked on for that to happen.
If anything, both would be really good blocking tight ends, if UH needed to shore up the edges.
Too bad about Wiefels requesting his release. Read that the coaches believed that if he’d remain at his JUCO his second season, UH would not have a chance of signing him. Regardless, hats off to Dejon Allen for being the team player that he is, now going back on the O-Line. I’d like to see him play.
They should definitely give them some live game action to see what they can do! Are they worried they would lose confidence against these PAC 10 D lines?

ST are they struggling at pass blocking or run blocking? Funny that O Line is the only position that a Norm Chow recruit has yet to crack the starting line up going back to last year.
Live game experience is the best kind of experience. OSU’s defensive front is has been a preseason concern for the Beavers. EWU was able to run on them. OSU losing three JUCO D-Linemen signees who failed to qualify over the summer, was a major blow.

The reality is……that both Griffin and Koloamatangi…..especially Griffin……were consistently being beat in Fall Camp one-on-ones by Malepeai, Woodard, Yap, and Tepa. Loyd was more consistent at OT in practice…..other than Shigematsu and Milovale.
Gotta admit that Griffin has some nastiness…..that Loyd doesn’t have…..’cuz he always played past the whistle (i.e., tried to start a fight)…..in 2 instances that I saw where he got manhandled by Malepeai…..then Tepa.
Naeole is playing the OL players that have performed consistently better in practice…..not just because they have nice measureables and look good getting off the bus.
As ST stated, both Griffin and Koloamatangi…..especially Griffin…..have some things that need to be worked on.

29. Thanks for the update! Griffin from what it sounds does need more time and maybe we should think of redshirting. But I think we should maybe let Koloamatangi play already and ride or die with him. He is the future and you can’t teach experience so let him start gaining some experience. From his highlight real he definitely seems to have that nastiness you want in a OT. Even Shigematsu was getting beat quite often while he was in there so it’s not like the starters don’t need a lot of work themselves.

I think we were all presently surprised by Malepeai’s performance. DT seems to be a much better fit for him and his quickness in there is paying dividends for our D. But as I said last year and same holds true for this year, Moses Samia is the most important player and key to our defense success this year. We need to keep him healthy!

Interesting comment after yesterday’s UW 38 – Boise State 6 game: basically said that last season, the Huskies tried to combine the pro style and up-tempo offenses (which seems to be what Coach Chow is looking to do), mixing and matching through-out the games. This season, UW says they are going up-tempo all the time. With 52 plays in the first half and 85 total against Boise State, it seems they can do it. Whether it will be successful for the rest of the season will be interesting to watch.

Koloamatangi seems more comfortable in his pass pro sets at LT…..than at RT, whereas Frank Jr. is more comfortable in their pass pro sets at RT……than at LT.
Hoping too that Koloamatangi can get more comfortable at RT…..since JMHO that the real future at LT is Elijah Tupai. JMHO that if not for his shoulder injury that is causing him to redshirt his true frosh season, Tupai would otherwise already be in the 2-deep at LT.
With his height and length, Griffin is strictly an OT.
Playing against bigger & stronger interior DTs would work against one of the areas that he needs to improve……upper body strength.

True dat I really like Tupai as well. Who can also play guard as well. With Waa probably looking to win a guard spot as well next year, we can have a solid O Line if we can develop another tackle.
With his height, length, and athletism, Tupai probably will be groomed to play OT….not OG.
Was winning all his one-on-ones early in Fall Camp at LT going up against fellow true frosh Meffy Koloamatangi (who has been moved to TE) and David Manoa.
BTW, Manoa looks to be the future at the hybrid DE/OLB position with his height and range……just needs to gain some bulk (at least 20-to-30 pounds).

A little more backdrop as to Greg Sala’s situation in Philly:Wide receiver Greg Salas was informed of his release earlier today, and with the earlier release of Russell Shepard, this comes as a head scratcher. Salas has NFL experience, and with the Philadelphia Eagles thin depth at wideout after key injuries to Jeremy Maclin and Arrelious Benn, a guy with proven experience in the league seemed to be a valuable commodity. Apparently this was not the case. Salas flashed ability and made a handful of acrobatic, one-handed catches in training camp and the preseason. He also displayed solid route-running ability. One thing that may have worked against the young man is he is strictly an inside slot receiver. Head coach Chip Kelly loves versatility, and it is possible he was looking for a guy that could play both inside and outside as he likes his options in the slot with Jason Avant and Damaris Johnson. Enter Jeff Maehl. He has the requisite athleticism to play both inside and out at receiver and is familiar with Kelly’s offense having played for him in college. Maehl was brought over from the Houston Texans and Kelly obviously sees something in the kid for him to overtake both Salas and Shepard on the roster in what must have been one of the toughest decisions for the coach and GM Howie Roseman to decide.

As for his being signed to the practice squad, he apparently is getting top dollar here:WR Greg Salas – I’m a little surprised he cleared waivers. He had a real sold training camp and preseason with the Eagles. Salas seems to be a great practice squad addition. I imagine the Eagles offered to give him extra money to stay on their PS. In New England, Salas was paid $8,800 per week instead of the ~$5,700 per week practice squad minimum. It’s speculation on my part — for now — but it makes sense at least that amount.

I’m also surprised Salas cleared waivers…Puzzling, as Salas does well, but just can’t stick with teams.
And finally figured out this damn practice squad thing…Any veteran that has two (or more) accrued seasons or has been active for nine or more games in their only accrued season will not qualify. Thus, while Salas has two seasons in the league, he has ONLY one accrued season while with the Rams, last season he did not fulfill the criteria for an accrued second season. Man, I’m a member of the bar in three states, and that was confusing as hell….

If Wiefels was starting, he wouldn’t have left for personal reasons.. Personal reasons is always the reason given when people transfer.
Going back to what I said a few weeks ago, The JC Linemen brought in were misevaluated and couldn’t beat out the struggling returnees like the coaches had planned…
Coaches brought in Milovale last year to fill in holes and he delivered… The guys this year just didn’t pan out… Coaches make mistakes in evaluating… It happens.. Just sucks that we went 0-3 in JC o line recruiting…
On bright side, It seems like we hit 3-4 on WRs. and Possibly 4-4. We will see later…

Do you believe our offense – more so Taylor Graham – will improve throughout the season? Taylor looked lost out in the game. He had a a whole year and a half to learn to play his position but seemed as if he never learned at all. If we had just a decent QBfor the USC game we probably would’ve won.

From the practices I observed, Sully looked clearly to be the best among the new JC Olinemen……so JMHO that it wasn’t any mis-evaluation of talent in his case.
Probably more of a case of the OL returnees…..especially Afusia, Lefotu & Loyd…..showing more improvement under Naeole from Spring Ball through Fall Camp. Will see if improvement continues throughout the season.

I think Taylor will get better. He needs to get adjusted to the speed of the game. Trust his receivers to be where they are going to be, and let that ball fly at least a half-second sooner.
BUT, I still would have liked to see Schroeder and Higgins in the second half the other day.
In other words, he has to anticipate them getting open rather that wait for them to get open on the shorter routes.
AllG: I will be the first to say Frank need to get butt ugly nasty, but to say he don’t belong is plain wrong. Look at the game film: Control his man on every play, Didn’t give up any sacks, Him and Dave open hole wide enough for a mack truck to go through, only for the inexperienced running backs we had to hit the wrong hole. What more can you asked for. I am a little bias, but I will say Loyd was one of the bright spot out there May not look the part, may not act the part, but he is getting the job done. Film don’t lie
67. Does that make him a adequate D1 lineman that can protect the QB though? I mean I think he would have been starting if he was. Lefotu hasn’t played well at all and didn’t do well on Saturday.
I didn’t see a whole lot of improvement at all… Yes I know it is USC but we played them last year too and at some point you need to get better and can’t make excuses of inexperience… If Eastern Washington can get it done, there is def no excuses why Hawaii can’t…. Offensively speaking..
When I think of a JC guy… I personally expect a Milovale type impact or better. Ray Hisatake played DT in JC and shaped up to be a better O lineman than any of these current guys… When David Griffin signed, everyone expected him to be a starting LT… If not there, starting RT. Just hope we evaluate better this off season because I can see a few more JC guys coming in. Unless Griffin redshirts and strictly works on getting stronger to have 2 years left to play.

64. Improvement, yes…. Enough to complete 60% of passes over the course of the season? No… The offense isn’t very QB friendly in my eyes unless you have superior talent all around… This offense thrives off excellent O line play and quality WRs… I do like the WRs…
By QB friendly, I mean the progressions take way too long and Graham doesn’t have enough time to go through them… He would have more success in a offense that involved more pre snap reads so he could use more 3 step drops and get rid of the ball quicker. I don’t see many hot routes used for blitzes. Maybe thats jus inexperience with the Wideouts right now.
By watching Video, Taylor will see a lot of WRs he missed that were open when he chose to throw some poor check downs over the middle. Can he correct it in a game situation where everything moves quicker? I don’t know.
He will improve though… Just not sure how much… I don’t see the competitiveness or intangibles that Colt had during the game though…. Colt made mistakes early on but learned very fast from them. He also had the ability to make a bad read but fit the ball into a small area to correct a mistake.

Chris Peterson changed the offense a to a wide open spread attack with no TE and got beat down by UW last night. He is now going back to the bread and butter pro style offense and bring back the TE. Norm Chow is sticking with the pro style offense and opening it up with more WR’s. Similar to the Boise State of before last nights debacle. The RnS/spread offense doesn’t work unless you really know how to coach it. Boise found that out last night.
Sometimes when you try to fix what your not very familiar with and its not broken, you brake it! And Peterson and his young OC tried just that and now he back pedaling to the staple Pro Style, trick play, hodge podge of plays and schemes Boise Offense with a Tight End. And getting away from the spread/read option no TE offensive scheme similar to the RnS. This is why you can add a little here and there but when you change the whole offense playbook it usually leads to growing pains and losses. The Boise defense can only do so much, if your spread/read option offense cannot put up points, your done. Hawaii is had the similar issues last season and lets see what happens this season.

68. I wanted to see Woolsey just to see if we could give USC a different look with a mobile QB. Not saying he would have done better but at that point, Graham was getting hit hard and wasn’t moving the ball at all… It wouldn’t hurt to just give someone else a chance and start Graham next week.

Commenting strictly about Wiefels…..that it’s not a case of mis-evaluation. Competition among the OGs was tight throughout Fall Camp…..so Wiefels wasn’t far behind Afusia and/or Lefotu.
Don’t forget that Milovale didn’t start at the beginning of last season. Just couldn’t beat out Muir at LT. The starting OL for the first 3 games last season’s was: LT Muir, LG Sai, C Clarke, RG Lefotu, RT Shigematsu…..although CWM and Milovale both rotated in the OG positions. Milovale actually didn’t break in as regular on the starting OL until the 4th game at LG against BYU,….then moved to RT when Shigematsu got hurt against the Cougars.
While some might expect that JC OL transfers should be starting their 1st seasons at the FBS level, I don’t recall any recent JC OL transfers that ever started in their 1st year at UH. Mlovale might actually be the most successful among the recent JC OL transfers to UH…..since others (Hisatake, LaCount, Leonard) became regular starting OL only in their senior years.
79—Just me two-cents on the QB play…and minus the Xs and Os, and even the actual performance, at least from where I sat in the room, Chow is exercising that tried-and-true demonstration of instilling confidence in his QB. What I think needs to be a side-board to this entire conversation, is that we are dealing with the rather delicate psyches of young men.
Consider this just for a moment, you make statements of commitment and staying the course; these are not merely cliches, rather you build a foundation of a program that has to go through its rather own difficult evolution. Pulling a guy, in the first game, when you still think he is going to be the person down the road, serves no practical purpose but to show that you are fickle and impatient.
Now,if this was 6-7 games down the road, well, the experiment, if you will, is over, and its time to look at the next guy. If someone is not given the opportunity to make a mistake and make appropriate corrections to his game, then Chow’s dictate is one of play perfectly or you are pulled instantly. Any and every QB needs to know that his learning curve will not be interrupted by a lack of patience or the clairvoyance that is hindsight.
In short, if you give a guy a shot, and this is especially true at QB, one of the essential features to his growth is that he has a rope long enough to succeed. A mgmt consultant told me once, the same amount of slack in the rope that you need to provide someone for them to succeed and have autonomy, is the same exact amount that an employee also needs to hang himself and get fired….no difference at all here.

USC front seven could be the best we see this season so I can not judge our oline based on their first game together. This bunch has a lot of room to grow. They still need to learn to play together. Too bad we lost Sully. I had high hopes for him but now a days it is not unusual to see players transfer. but like coach Chow said we want players who want to be here.
For Peterson to run his old offense maybe he needs a qb like Moore to run it. Could be that he feels he doesn’t have one right now.
81. I know where you are coming from… But I can’t sugar coat how poor our O line play has been over the past 2 seasons… I would expect a new JC guy could come in and easily win a starting job. Just like our WRs came in and took starting jobs…
So my expectations are for him to be even better than Lefotu and Afusia…. I personally think Sai was only starting because he was familiar with the new system… Versus other guys were converting from RnS offense… I made it known early on and took a lot of heat that both Sais weren’t D1 starting linemen…. Also think Milovale was hurt in fall camp so he was behind…
I was actually hoping Waa was ready like Kennedy but a redshirt year won’t hurt. He has the quickness and size to be a good Olinemen next year. Just needs to add strength….. At least Hollis has 4 years left to play 3 so he can benefit from a redshirt year too and still play 3. He looks quick… Just undersized…
82. Guys get pulled all the time… Not necessarily because you are benching a kid, but because you just simply want to give the next guy some reps when things aren’t moving. We had protection break downs so it wouldn’t hurt TG to have him watch on the sidelines for a couple series to see what the defense is doing from a different angle.
OKlahoma St immediately put in Walsh the other day because he added the run element to the offense. TCU took Pachall out of the game against LSU fo the same reason.
85–In as much as I understand your perspective, a first time starter at QB, who you want to start down the line is a different creature. One need only look at the very rough starts Aikman and Manning had in the NFL. My point is that I think Chow has an inkling who he wants starting–now if you are unsure, say so–but he (chow) has made every indication that he is going to provide the young man the opportunity to both succeed and fail.
Come on Man! Taylor Graham will be fine as Hawaii’s QB, it was his first live game in years and it was against USC 4-5 star players. Colt Brennan didn’t do so well in 2005 against USC and a few games after USC. Listen, Colt Brennan didn’t become Super Star QB Colt Brennan until 2006 or did some of us forget that? He took his lumps and got his live game reps in 2005. So lets not jump the gun here, asking for a very young Woosley or some other mobile QB that also has no NCAA FBS experience either to take over after 1 game. Woosley is a good QB and has a lot of upside, no question, but he couldn’t beat out Higgins. That speaks for itself.

Injuries (Shigematsu, Laurel, Lefiiti) and circumstances (Hansen) were the reason behind poor OL play in 2011 that saw UH ending the season playing with an almost all back-up starting OL (Leonard, Faaumu, Sapolu, Lefotu, Legay)…..while the wrong guy was coaching the OL last season……as the Coach finally figured out himself.
Been real tough adjustment on the OL returnees too to adjust the different coaching instructions…..and techniques…..which have often been contradictory and inconsistent……in dealing with their 3rd OL Coach in the past 3 seasons. Not realistic to expect dramatic improvement and consistency from the OL all in Naeole’s 1st year.

The Class of 2014 will be Naeole’s 1st year recruiting OL. Unfortunately, verbal commit Kapoi is probably the only legit FBS local ’14 OL prospect.
Will be interesting to see if any top local ’15 OL prospects consider UH. Ulu-Perry has shown interest in UH, while Uluave supposedly looking primarily at the Pac-12 schools.
I saw QB’s getting rushed and pressured in every game yesterday, yet freshman or senior they kept their composure and completed passes. Sure the o-line could improve but we could say the same about the QB and coach.

Just watched freshman quarterback from Cal in their game against NW. He threw to ints for tds. Funny how the ints were by the same guy and how the ball was knocked up into the air and how he happened to be there. Dejavu. But I think that Cal qb has a bright future.
It doesn’t hurt to put Waa and Koloamatangi in to give them much needed game experience. If anything, you want to find out if the player is a gamer. Remember, the former Kahuku OL freshman started for JJ. I forget his name at the moment. Freshman can play, but you have to find out and get the opportunities.

Mountain West teams took it on the chin this weekend. Boise St. got pummeled by UW, Colorado St. lost to lowly Colorado, San Diego St. losing to Tony Romo’s alma mater Eastern Illinois is a shock. UNLV blasted by Minnesota. New Mexico losing to UT-San Antonio, Utah State losing a close one to Utah, Wyoming looked pretty good in losing at Nebraska, down went Hawaii, and Nevada’s defense was enept against UCLA. Only, Air Force won, but not impressive. San Jose St. won, and Fresno St. in a squeaker over Rutgers.
Watched Teddy Bridgewater play this morning. So smooth, so calm, so collected, so supremely confident. I have to say he’s the top NFL QB prospect for next years draft. If I was the New York Jets, the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the San Diego Charger, and the Oakland Raiders I would try to get the first pick in the draft to pick Bridgewater.
We seriously need to make a spread option package for Ewaliko. Maybe run it out of the diamond formation and take advantage of his running ability/our stable of running backs…
Watching the Boise St game last night, it looked like they were running a modified Pistol offense. It looked really strange and they did not look comfortable running it. After the first quarter, UW seemed to figure it out and was able to consistently stuff it. Boise St used to have such a great scheme with multiple formations and packages that kept defenses off balance.
It was like when Rick Neuheisal chose to change to the Pistol, I knew his days were numbered. You have to run what you know.

Tough loss for the Wahine. Couldn’t get that rhythm of the first game to stick. Even line ups were out of sync, and that let the rest of the air out of the balloon. Bounce back like champions!

Not having Manu-Olevao made a difference. A point here and there is compounded. She’s a starter and she was missed. But credit San Diego also. They were feisty and dug a lot of balls. That San Diego libero from Hawaii was pretty too. She was also an all tournament selection. San Diego’s blocking was the key in this match. And that’s how it goes, especially in the tournaments. Blocking is intimidation, impose your will on the other team. The team that blocks better usually wins the critical points and eventually the match.
That’s how we beat Texas on Friday night.
Watched several games and a lot of highlights yesterday and this morning. It hit me that Chow has “borrowed” a lot to fashion this year’s offense. Don’t believe UH ever lined in the traditional peo set.
I was at the game but I wish I could see the replay. Don’t believe they ran too many plays from last year other than the empty set. In my mind they didn’t have any of the same running plays as last year.
In a sense everyone on offense is learning a new system. It may take a while but I have confidence things will get better. The comfort level of running this offense will increase with each game. The team will find it’s rhythm.
Oliveira (HBA) was everywhere and was a difference maker tonite.
It seems to me coach chow keeps a majority of his plays in the middle of the field. he likes to have his quaterback sit in the pocket and wait till the play develops and runs the ball thru the middle which makes the opposing defenses key in on this and makes the offensive line look bad.
