Irene Wilton, 90

Irene Wilton, the mother of volleyball coach Mike Wilton, died today from injuries suffered when she was struck by a car in Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Independent reported.
At age 90, Mrs. Wilton was a feisty woman who had hiked regularly.

Here’s the article:

Irene Wilton, the 90-year old pedestrian struck by a car while crossing the intersection of Foothill and Cieneguitas roads on May 29, died this afternoon at Cottage Hospital as a result of her injuries. Though the California Highway Patrol has stated that alcohol was not a factor in the accident, it remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against the 84-year-old woman who hit Wilton.

Running backs Leon Wright-Jackson and Jake Heun have worked extra hard this summer. Wright-Jackson, who weighs about 220 pounds, is trying to gain strength while maintaining his speed. Heun, who is from Alaska, has lost about six pounds running sprints in Manoa’s heat.

In this picture, Wright-Jackson helps Heun stretch out:

This is why blog hosts are not full-time photographers. I didn’t think I had all three subjects in the picture. So I tried to slide one out. But they all got into the frame … only they’re all pushed to the left. From the left, Jon Medeiros, Aaron Bain and Kealoha Pilares. shaka.JPG

Of our blog readers, d1shima is one of the most talented singers. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syuxX4A85ko) He also delivers a strong voice of opinion, insight and humor as one of our frequent posters. Meet the Dean of bloggers:

Greetings All.
I’m d1shima and I am a Tsaiko. (All together now, “Hi, d1shima.”)

I grew up in “Da Housing” two blocks away from Farrington with my Mom and one of my brothers. Although I was fortunate enough to have earned scholarships to attend private schools throughout most of my primary education, the tempestuousness of youth got the best of me during Senior year and I was “allowed” to graduate from FHS. The good news there is that’s where I met Mrs. d1shima and we’ve been together since. (Everybody say, “Awwww”)

My Dad was a big sports fan and although divorced from my Mom he still played a big enough role in raising me to pass that along. Friday afternoons in the fall would find me on the bus from Nuuanu (shout out to Hongwanji Mission School) to Mo’ili’ili for HS football at the Termite Palace. At first, my interest was mostly in the bands, the cheering sections and the cheerleaders (even had songleaders back then). I still can remember a songleader named Emme for FHS that we all now watch on her TV specials.

cc-apr19kkd1.jpg

Eventually though I started falling in love with the football itself. The big thrill was going on Saturday nights to watch UH play. I had no idea who Linfield, Humboldt St., and Pacific were or where they came from but I lived and died by the way the ‘Bows played on those nights. Larry Arnold, Larry Cole, Golden Richards were heroes.

Interestingly, fuud became associated with football then, too. The saimin, stadium hotdogs, Frosty Malts! Even as I write this I start salivating! Haha. Oh, and don’t forget the boiled peanuts; to this day, I’m the only one in the family who enjoys dried boiled peanuts.

So fast forward to present day and the heroes for me now are my two sons, #1 just finished his second year of teaching back at his Alma Mater, St. Louis, and of course, many of you know that #2 just graduated last week from there. Those guys love football. And they amaze me constantly with how devotedly they work to prepare themselves for it as a coach now for one and as a player for the other.

Mrs. d1shima and I celebrated our 25th anniversary last summer and now with #2 going away to Linfield this coming August, we’ll begin the transition to “empty-nesters.” We’re both glad I found this Tsaiko community to be a part of that. I started reading the Warrior Beat last season in search of some info for the Las Vegas game. Little did I know that what I would actually find was such a fine, fun and frolicking community.
And now I’ll get to share all that I find out about Linfield.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

ST…you should always take pictures with two eyes open. That way the format of the pictures will be centered. Learned that from a photog.

d1shima, thanks for sharing your bio. I too remember the Termite Palace days and eating boiled peanuts.

    aloha kakahiaka-

nice to ‘meet you’ d1- ah…frosty malts…and ‘dried’ boiled peanuts? used to help make boiled peanuts for my hubby’s family store, which were ono, but not sure about the ‘dried’ part…sounds like an oxymoron…

great to learn from ST’s article that Tyler is getting it together re: academics- Tyler, we are rooting for you! Keep up the good work!

    good day to all…

    Go Warriors!

  23. Blackie June 3, 2008 7:35 am

  24. Kekoa June 3, 2008 7:35 am

Ono for boiled peanuts now! Whatever happened to Frosty Malts? Did Aliens wisk them away to another planet or what?

  27. whitey June 3, 2008 7:42 am

d1, next time you come to Maui, plan to see us and I will get you some boiled peanuts on the dry side. My friend is starting up a business and his specialty is boiled peanuts and pickled mango (and sometime pipanola).

time to go for breakfast of champions, so you all have a great day.

  28. Blackie June 3, 2008 7:44 am

CO is one of my most favorite players of all time. I wish he could have done better in the NFL. I thought he had a legitimate chance with the Bucs, but I don’t think he made it past the first round of cuts.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2008 7:56 am

When Owens played at UH, the reporters all agreed he sorta-sorta resembled Sylvester Stallone.
So, naturally, because everybody is chicken, I say to CO: “Yo, Adrian!”
To which, he said: “I’m Rocky, and I’m going to knock you out.”

  36. jasonk June 3, 2008 8:09 am

  39. g-nalo June 3, 2008 8:32 am

Brah, geez you one public school grad. Right on! Everytime I get one chance to eat Frosty Malts, I think of Honolulu Stadium. Good times.

Honolulu Stadium – frosty malt, boiled peanuts, and S & S Saimin, classics.

    “line-ups, 10 cents! get your line-ups!”
    “popcorn, peanuts, chips, coke!”

the smell of cigars, the shave ice shop across King St. (rainbow flavor the bestest), an okazuya i believe on the corner of King and Hausten, DON’T walk under the bleachers.

anyone remember the brand name of the stadium clock? [i don’t]

and oh yeah….Good Morning to all!

  40. I Believe June 3, 2008 8:38 am

ey- ST’s getting techie posting d1’s karaoke warm up (#30)…which sure brought back memories…and, I’ll admit it, chicken skin and a teary eye…say what you will about Michael Jackson, but he has talent….and it is still amazing, this many years later, to see people with such radically different voices and styles harmonzing…classic!

  41. Mad Dog June 3, 2008 8:46 am

    ST coming on 1420 “shortly”

  42. I Believe June 3, 2008 8:49 am

Tombo Ahi- thanks for sharing vid of Chad Owens- I adore him- here’s a walk on to UH who gave his all- worked for everything he ever got! Was a tremendous asset to the team and helped to make Chang look good. I’m so bummed that pro efforts have been so challenging-

ST- to what do you attribute the challenges? And, what about Texas team?

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid June 3, 2008 8:57 am

Warriors are gonna have a few big guys at RB. The QB to reciever ratio would seem to present a problem. Will everybody get enough reps?

He’s D1, D only, and one of D nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. 🙂 Great bio, Kalhi guy!

  44. Mad Dog June 3, 2008 8:58 am

ST, the Grand PooBah, now on 1420.

  45. James June 3, 2008 9:06 am

ST…That’s heresy to say Farrington=Damien….the Farrington guys wouldn’t like that….mwahahahahahaha

Good to see CO had an awesome game last night. I just keep thinking some guy named Warner also started off playing AFL…than won a SB in the NFL……hmmmmmmm

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  50. sjmacro June 3, 2008 9:16 am

D1-was Beau your ghost writer? 😆 great bio and late congrats to you and the Mrs. for 25 yrs.

ST: your pictures are better than the ones on the HPD recovered stolen property line-up. 😀 You would think they would have CSI or EBay quality photos. Should be good deals at the auction if you want to upgrade your film or point and shoot camera.
    sjmacro

  51. g-nalo June 3, 2008 9:18 am

<I think the Honolulu Stadium clock was BULOVA.

Koauka – sounds about right. i believe the clock was changed twice in the history of the stadium but i saw only one.

  52. Garret June 3, 2008 9:21 am

    d1shima,

Awesome bio! I loved the frosty malts and boiled peanuts when I was a kid and would love them now too.

  53. Garret June 3, 2008 9:22 am

    ST,

  54. Koauka June 3, 2008 9:25 am

Did anyone get to hear the entire ST interview with Bobby Curran. Thought I heard some interesting comments the Warriors road travel plans.

  55. stacyj June 3, 2008 9:28 am

    Great bio d1!

ST, yeah, us Farrington folks don’t like the FHS=DMHS.

  56. addahknowjoe June 3, 2008 9:34 am

    Dee-One/Dee-Only/Shima! Excellent bio, my friend.

I’m flattered to read Larry Arnold was a small kid hero of yours. He was my coach back in high school. Very humble, humorous man. Funny, back then we were clueless to his accomplishments. It wasn’t till Raphel Cherry began getting recognition to possibly being the all-time passer that Larry’s name started coming up in the news. We were like, “Whoa? Coach, das you dey talking about? You wuz one qwatabak for UH?”

  57. James June 3, 2008 9:44 am

    Ohhhh….Larry Arnold….I read that as Larry Price…mwahahahahaha…

  58. James June 3, 2008 9:46 am

stacyj….actually, I think the name will soon change from DMHS to St. Damien HS…or St. Damien School since they now have 7th and 8th grades….of course, they were saying that when I was there but now that Father Damien is on the verge of sainthood, it may come to fruition….

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid June 3, 2008 9:49 am

*DPK is almost embarassed to admit he played in the Ole Termite Palace. Thass a longgggggg time ago.* 😳

    DPK…don’t be embarassed…embrace your AARP status…mwahahahahah..j/k my friend…

okay gang have to go run errands…BBL

  61. SteveM June 3, 2008 10:13 am

d1shima good thing you missed the bio deadline last year… wouldn’t know about your karaoke talent with pictures and video back then 🙂

A good bio from a quiet good samaritan!

  62. al June 3, 2008 10:13 am

d1……..only one word can describe your bio, “awwwwwww.”

  63. al June 3, 2008 10:14 am

d1…judging from the video. you were a lot skinnier and had such a sweet demeanor back then.

  64. al June 3, 2008 10:16 am

    “line-ups, 10 cents! get your line-ups!”

  65. al June 3, 2008 10:17 am

interestingly, a-house and i knew the grandkids of the “peanut lady”. we old or what?

  66. Kaimuki Kid June 3, 2008 10:23 am

I always loved the Teriyaki Plate at Chunky’s Drive Inn where the First Hawaiian Bank is now…miss the Teri-Beef and their Mac Salad, Shagging foul balls that left the Stadium, the impromtu drag racing on Isenburg Street, The Guri-Guri from the Drive Inn on King and Hausten…

  67. Barry Markowitz June 3, 2008 10:25 am

D1, If you still had a program of UH vs. Pacific from your era, I bet you would see a minor assistant coach named Pete Carroll listed. It is ironic that yesterday I found a few Termite Palace photos of man child Mosiula Tatupu blasting through huge holes…didn’t see if it was DPK on defense.

Re: Jake Heun…anyone notice that his arms are larger than most UH Warriors thighs?

ST: What’s the scoops on the UH independent contractor paid performer’s son’s indication that he is a UH Warrior this year, not a PSU Viking?

  68. Stretch June 3, 2008 10:27 am

d1 – great bio, thanks. btw – where’s the Termite Palace??

  69. Jason June 3, 2008 10:31 am

    thanks jason.

  72. Garret June 3, 2008 10:33 am

I hope that d1shima doesn’t mind, but I did a couple of extra google searches in honor of his bio day. First article: Shawn Withy-Allen update!

Former University of Hawaii quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen, who directed the Fayetteville Guard to a 27 wins in three seasons between 2005 and 2007, has resigned with the team in hopes of salvaging the franchise’s American Indoor Football Association playoff hopes.

The Guard went 12-0 last season with Withy-Allen at quarterback and won the Indoor Football Championship. But with a rewarding new job with a church-sponsored youth program and planning to get married, Withy-Allen decided to hang up his cleats with the Guard after 2007.

However, with Fayetteville struggling at 3-7 and having lost three straight games, Withy-Allen has decided to come back to help his old team. The Guard has four games left in the regular season, including Saturday’s home game at the Crown Coliseum against the Huntington Heroes.

  73. Garret June 3, 2008 10:34 am

The Washington Post’s report on the Redskins’ practice mentions Colt’s hip prevented him from practicing yesterday.

Campbell participated fully in the session, but many players did not, including cornerback Carlos Rogers (knee surgery), wide receiver Antwaan Randle El (knee surgery), linebacker Rocky McIntosh (knee surgery), rookie quarterback Colt Brennan (hip surgery), safety Vernon Fox (knee surgeries), rookie safety Kareem Moore (knee surgery), defensive end Erasmus James (knee surgery) and tight end Tyler Ecker (groin).

  74. Garret June 3, 2008 10:36 am

The Washington Times noted that Colt *did* participate in individual drills. I think that they didn’t even let him do that in their previous practices so this is an indication that Colt’s recovery is progressing!

Rookie quarterback Colt Brennan, coming off knee surgery, took part in individual drills.

  75. Garret June 3, 2008 10:37 am

Jacksonville discussion mentions Chad Owens. Interesting that they mentioned that his size was his problem and the punt drops were not mentioned.

Have you seen anything in D’Juan Woods that separates him from previous spring phenoms such as Chad Owens and Charles Sharon? Or is there a good chance he will fade away, not be mentioned at all once the season gets close, like those two?
Vic: Woods is bigger and more physically impressive than the other two. That’s the big difference. Woods is a big guy: 6-1, 210. The fear with Owens, because he was so small, was sending him over the middle. Sharon’s shortcoming was his inability to get off the jam. Woods is big enough and strong enough to do both. I don’t know whether he’ll fade away or not. I haven’t forgotten that he’s an undrafted guy, but I see skills in him that lead me to believe he’s got a chance to stick around. I wanna see him block. I wanna see him in a real physical test. He has the muscle to be a physical receiver; I think he almost has to be a physical receiver to stick in the league, because I don’t see a lot of explosion in him. His body type and his hands remind me more of Hines Ward than Randy Moss, if you know what I mean.

  76. g-nalo June 3, 2008 10:37 am

    g-nalo…..
    “line-ups, 10 cents! get your line-ups!”

that would be me. here i thought that you were younger than me.

no forget, chunky’s, all star drive inn, hisago’s, and stadium bowl-o-drome.

hey now i AM younger than you, granted not by much. 🙂
don’t exactly remember when i first started going to ILH games, but i recall watching Elroy Chong, Russ Francis, Joe Story, Mufi Hanneman, etc.. players of that era.

i remember Pride granted he’s of a younger generation. maybe if i knew DPK’s real name, it might ring a bell?

btw – the football poses on the line-ups were always the same, the heisman pose.

  77. Butlerdidit June 3, 2008 10:40 am

I hate the way private schools unload students even at the last-minute zero-hour. I know someone who spent 12 years at Punahou, from Kindergarten on, and had to go to Roosevelt at the end because of “excessive” class cuts. The guy who showed no mercy later on had his own progeny busted for drugs, so bachi on him. Her story was that she was on the Mainland looking at prospective colleges as she had been encouraged to do. Anybody think they looked the other way when Michelle Wie cut class?

  78. Garret June 3, 2008 10:40 am

Chad Owens really put up some amazing stats yesterday and his team scored 65 points. So, I was surprised that the headline of this article credited the other team’s *defense* for beating Chad’s team.

Chad Owens, who puréed the Dragons’ secondary and kickoff coverage unit for 360 yards, scored his fifth touchdown on a two-play, 33-yard drive to make the score 66-59.

  79. Garret June 3, 2008 10:41 am

    Another article on Chad’s game.

As for the middle portion of the final Week 14 game of the season, the Crush looked impressive. Crush WR CHAD OWENS returned the first kickoff return for a touchdown this season for Colorado on the first play of the second half. The 56-yard return was the first in 78 tries this season and tied the ballgame at 38.

Owens finished his night with 10 receptions for 132 yards and five touchdowns, including the returned kick.

  80. Garret June 3, 2008 10:43 am

Pat Hill testified yesterday in the trial of a former Fresno State player.

Fresno State football coach Pat Hill testified Monday in former player Jason Shirley’s defense against four misdemeanor counts, but the defense’s primary witness was Dr. William Carveth.

Hill’s appearance turned a few heads in the jury box.

The defense showed video of the play on which Shirley suffered the concussion, and Hill was asked if he noticed Shirley on the play.

“What I really noticed in that play,” Hill said, “was recovering the fumble in the end zone.”

  81. Garret June 3, 2008 10:46 am

Article about one of Florida’s new coaches. I think he’s their DL coach.

When Dan McCarney recruited in Florida as Iowa State’s head football coach, he had to explain where his school was and what kind of program he had.

Now, when McCarney shows up in Florida high schools, he has a product as recognizable there as beaches and sunsets.

The Florida job opened when Greg Mattison left to become an assistant coach with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Coaches at programs like Florida’s never suffer from a lack of opportunities.

“Urban and I had never worked together, never coached against each other,” McCarney said. “He was at Bowling Green and Utah, and I was at Iowa State. But we became good friends and had a mutual respect. We hit it off and stayed in touch through the years.”

Q&A with Boise State’s head coach. Kind of funny how they will be using shotgun more this season and UH will be using it less.

Q: You pushed the tempo in spring ball. What were your impressions of that effort and will we see a faster-paced offense in the fall?

A: “I loved it, and I loved it first and foremost because we’re going to see a lot of that on defense if nothing else, and it’s very hard to simulate those types of things with the scout team. It’s great for our defense to have to face that. The second thing is, we’ve always been fairly successful in no-huddle situations, so if we decide to increase that as a portion of our offense, I think it could possibly make us more effective. We will do some of it. Percentage wise, we haven’t solved that yet.”

Q: You also experimented with more shotgun snaps. Will that continue?

A: “We will do maybe more of it, but we will not be exclusive. That’s not us. We don’t like to be exclusive any one thing. We still feel it’s important for this program to be under center.”

Colorado backed out of games with LSU and scheduled Fresno State instead.

The Colorado football program postponed a planned home-and-home series with Louisiana State in 2011 and 2012 and replaced it by renewing a series with Fresno State.

Although contracts still must be signed, Fresno State recently agreed to a two-for-one, home-and-home series beginning in Boulder in 2011, at Fresno in 2012 and returning to Boulder in 2013, CU associate athletic director for sports information Dave Plati said.

Colorado did not have to pay LSU a penalty to get out of the series with the defending national champion because the contract with the Tigers, first announced in 2006, had not been signed. Plati said CU still hopes to add LSU to future schedules, but it would likely be more than a decade from now.

    Nice bio D1shima,

Enjoyed reading it. Congratulations on your sons graduation. I assume he will be playing ball at Linfield. The Wildcats take football very seriously as you probably know, Its a little school that plays a big brand of football. Enjoyed my years there. I’m sure he will too..

This Fantasy Football analyst tried to pick the best college football defense for fantasy football players this season. It is nice that he is worried about UH’s offense when discussing Oregon State’s defense.

    20) Beavers, Oregon St.
The Beaver’s defense was 4th in sacks and 6th in turnovers in 2007. Bad news for the Beavers is they lose eight starters including their entire front seven. However, like Virginia Tech, the Beavers consistently overachieve in the turnover and sack department so don’t count them out completely. Especially with their two sack leaders from 2007 in defensive ends Victor Butler (10) and Slade Norris (9) assuming starting roles in 2008. Despite the losses, the Beavers should also start a veteran group with nine upperclassman making the losses more palatable. Non-conference games against Hawaii, Utah and Penn State are cause for concern. Tier: D2 Returning Starters: 3 2007 Stats: 22.6 Pts agst, 235.54 yds pass agst, 70.6 yds rush agst, 34 turnovers

The NY state auditor has a big problem with how Rutgers sent friends and family members to their bowl game in 2006. I wonder what that auditor would say if he saw the full Sugar Bowl list for UH…

A state audit released today took Rutgers University to task for spending thousands of dollars to send friends and family of athletic staff members to the Texas Bowl football game in 2006.

The university paid airfare, hotel and per diems for the spouses, guests and children of the athletic staff at the Texas Bowl game in Houston. In-room movies, valet parking, room service, internet connections and phone charges totaling $11,000 also were paid.

This popped up on my standard UH google search.

The Mustangs aren’t holding official practices, but June Jones is once again making headlines. At the end of April Jones, won the Byron Nelson Celebrity-Am along with teammates Dodge Carter, Philip Cullum and Donny Evans.

At the beginning of May, Jones was honored with the Kulia I Ka Nu’u Award for Leadership by the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California in San Francisco. The award translates into “strive for the summit.”

The SMU football coach will hit the baseball diamond. During SMU night, hosted by the Texas Rangers at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, on Wednesday, June 4, at 7:05 p.m. Jones will throw out the first pitch. SMU students, faculty, staff and friends of the university can get tickets at a discounted price.

    d1Shima,

Great Bio; I enjoyed reading it very much as it brought back a lot of memories for me. So from one Kalihi boy to another and fellow Farrington HS grads (albeit 20 years or so apart!)… Go GOVS!

And congrats to you and the Mrs. on your 25th anniversary. You folks did a great job in raising your two sons.

    Thanks for sharing!

Just before my time at Kalani, but I had a lot of friends whose older brothers played with Joe Story. Joe Story was super quick and could cut really well but it was the fact putting on pads and gear did not slow him down one bit…He went on to become an Olympic Medalist in Team Handball

DPK, In the summer of ’71, my El Camino H.S. QB, Bob Glick, led the Calif team to a loss here. He said they stayed in a “crummy army barracks”. His career lasted only a few games after that…when our UCLA Frosh team played him at Stanford in Oct ’71 we sort of put him out of the game for evah. I think Lynn Swann must have been the year before, ’70?

    Great bio, D1.?

Mahalo to Pomai for helping out with getting into the tsaiko.com website to look at earlier bios.

My memories of the Stadium include Chunky’s Drive-In, the peanuts, the beer, the hot dogs, and the Frosty Malts. Today, a pale imitation is available from Carnation at various stores and Les Murakami Stadium – it may also be available at the Stan Sheriff Center, but I’ve never bought it there. I always get the Dipping Dots during games there..

My fondest memory, however, is sitting through a Turkey Day game in the heaviest non-hurricane rainstorm I’ve ever experienced back in the late 1960s. The teams were unrecognizable within minutes.

Look forward to other bios over the next several weeks.

And it rained for 2 weeks straight. Talk about culture shock and wanting to go back to the mainland! No tv, no going to the beach, no car, just holed up in a concrete house with those other 3 people for 2 weeks. Some people would bring us groceries and make sure we were alive.

I made it. The other 3 moved back to the mainland eventually

… … … A-sports keep taking our food after she threaten to “smoke” us. After that we were like “take all the food you want”… “we’ll even have jojo show you how to role the meat in the lettuce leaf if you like but please don’t smoke us.”

  165. homey ® June 3, 2008 1:19 pm

I was writing about food stealing at Makino’s…

DPK was a victim at another CC, the one at Ward Warehouse. A-Sports was not involved in that one.

me and Mrs A-House was at that game too!! – makai/ewa sidelines, 40 yd line about 15 rows up.

remember how they entered the playing field?? all that music, but no one in sight until they broke from the DH makai entrance – loved that band!

an den tey wen bus our okoles.

several years ago, UH tried to get the band to perform on the way back from Japan, but Grambling wanted a $250-300K guarantee.

    Homey,

Here is a beer quote for you…

Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, “It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.”

Does anyone remember how a Popolo RB from Radford named Himmer Henry came on the scene and brought RHS to prominence in Coach Velasco’s 1st year. in a huge Championship game between OIA/ILH. Guess who won that one and shocked people??

Radford also had a kid named Jackie Disher, and another named Lefty Salomon that set a few receiving records for RHS that 1st year. These are guys I played sandlot tackle with, no equipment on Sundays in our backyard. Bob Apisa, Deroy & Leroy Lavatai were also part of our crew. There were some competitive pickup games in baseball with this same group, and we also played American Legion baseball on opposing teams in more organized travel leagues.

  268. g-nalo June 3, 2008 3:26 pm

I believe Arthur Trout played in 1974-75 and I think he played for Kailua if I am not mistaken. A little fuzzy about the details. Onosai played for Farrington at the same time Bubba Kreutz (Mr. Inside) Joe Story (Mr. Outside) played for Kalani, the only year that they had even a semi-decent Football Team. Anybody remember Rodney Loo basketball player for Kalani 1974-76

Trout was Farrington, the most notable Kailua name was Russ Francis.

    “cool hand ” Loo?

When was the Ward Warehouse Cattle Call? Even though I usually cannot make them, I know about them. Isn’t there an all-you-can-eat buffet for $10 or $12 there? Is that the one?

OFF SPORTS TOPIC: Does anyone here have a 3/4″ video tapedeck in working condition who would be able to lend it to us for several weeks as we transfer obout 80 hrs of finished shows to DVD before the tapes completely dissolve. If you do, we would be willing to make a contribution to Koa Anuenue in your name for whatever UH sports program you wish.

Sony Hawaii says that they’ll quote look at our tape deck unquote but there are no parts available to fix it.

For the next several months, we’ll also be transfering about 100 hours of raw HI-8 footage as well about 80 hours of VHS to DVDs. After that’s completed, then we’ll transfer about 100 hours of classic rock audio cassette tapes to CDs.

Hope those of you dealing with The Internet Cold are feeling better.Mine should be gone by tomorrow.

Glad to see that Tyler is pulling it together academically to remain eligible. It’s going to be a grand summer to hear about how all of the players are doing. I haven’t seen many of our players on campus yet, but summer school just started this week. UH guys are motivated!

Back in those days there used to be a lot of “gangs”..Like Buckle Lane Gang, Palama Gang, etc. and where Mayor Wright Housing is now used to be a vacant lot full of mango trees. I remember a saimin stand there on Hall Street that served ono kine saimin 🙂

Manapua man used to call out “Manapua” and it was only a nickel back then. But no more nickel… Wow…am I old or what…

let’s get this straight once and for all!!!

a cattle call is open to the public and are announced on the blog.

a mini call happens when someone invites a friend or two for lunch and it may just so happen that he/she is a tsaiko or not.

one does not make a public invitation to every event that a person has just because they are tsaiko’s.

    ….nuff said!

    for the record though….

the cattle call at ward warehouse sometime last year was announced on the blog and some 15 people showed up. yes, at this event at buffet 100, everytime dpk went up to get more food, which happened like 5-6 times. someone at the table borrowed some of his food. it was hilarious no doubt.

but all done in fun. besides we may have saved him from gaining an additional 5-6 pounds.

I went to Mun Lun school just for a couple of summers.

Do remember the bath house on Hall Street or Tominaga Grocery Store or the pool hall right around the bend on Kukui and Hall Street; that’s where my cousins lived. Would be nice to see those old Hall Street pix…

We used to go watch the games at Palama Settlement barefoot league; those were some tough guys…

You are indeed blessed to have a lovely wife and two splendid sons, both of whom are winners at what they have thus far accomplished. Good luck to both as they continue to live their dreams.

Really looking forward to bios from Midori&, UHFan808, Stretch and all the rest who are patiently waiting to be “invited” to share their story.

Koakane, LizK, LTUHF, Wreck, for the kind words about me and the A-House Ohana…Mahalo, you made my day!

I used a big wrench that I made in a factory all by myself and would grease it with the pork fat from the time I went to Samoa to teach them how to roast a pig Hawaiian style. Got there by riding the Hokuli’a when it was only a single hual canoe in which we would race the the natives in Africa… …. …. What was I talking about?

You never catch dojos at Waikahalulu Falls? Sell them to the Filipino men to make some money to buy sodas. Good fun!

    AWHs’ Cousin:

    June 3rd, 2008 at 4:42 pm
We are all family. Back in the day I used to catch rabits and eat them while building the first blimp ever to leave the great state of New York.

    Uhh

    4 wrong on your essay

AWH – you can see when the CC (cattle call) and K-Calls are scheduled (and other great Tsaiko Info) at http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/

    al,
I know who Lena Machado is, but where did she live? I lived about a block away from Ebisu Catering on S. King St., where Alan Wong’s restaurant is now. Taniguchi Store was right next to us. My Mom’s family lived on Hall St.

    koakane,
I remember buying moi, too, at Mun Lun school. My Goong-Goong (JaM knows who he was) used to do tai chi in the evening there when an old sifu was visiting from China. The teacher would be up on the classroom porch & the adults would follow him doing tai chi in the yard. I used to run around eat moi, try to follow the movements & play, play, play.

We are old futs, but we had good times in our hanabutta days.

My son doesn’t believe me, but I saw Elvis at the Civic Auditorium when he was NOT fat! I also remember going to see wrestling there with my Dad. Boy, we should all write our memories down for our keeds.

    We’re Making More Memories!

Me and Koakane were trying to figgah which one of the Manapua places you were going to take up residence at on your first 10 minutes on the ground.

I say you’ll prolly head over to Waimalu because of the great selections. I mean aside from you traditional Char Siu, where else can you get Roast Duck inside Manapua, or Hot Dog Manapua? Teri-flavored meatballs are the rage now, but Kau Yuk is good stuff too. Mmmm…Mmmm…Mmm!

  389. wafan June 3, 2008 6:04 pm

    Kekoa . . .

D1’s bio was well written and really evoked some warm and fuzzy memories of a loooooong (for some of the older Tsai-ko’s that would be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong) time ago. HA!

I do remember Howard, the peanut lady, the Boliva clock, the entrance by the Grambling Band from under the makai stands (that was some gut shaking sounds from that fabulous drum-line, and the band — oh my), the Shrine Game, Turkey Day Games, Islander Baseball, going to Farrington and St. Louis games with my older cousins, the Farrington band when they played Kansas City and Cheerio, the makai “parking lot” that had more pot-holes than pavement, and . . .

  390. Long Time UH Fan June 3, 2008 6:11 pm

    Wafan,

    Cheerio.. FHS td song?

  391. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 6:13 pm

I thought that it was very interesting to learn more about some other Tsaikos through the experiences you shared today.

    wafan / LTUHF,

Is that the name of the song? Remember hearing it a few years back at a Govs game I was attending. Brought back memories.

Who can name da coach of the ’65 team dat beat Kam(ehameha), 16-6 fo’ da ILH title?

    Bonus question:
Name da field that they practiced on.

  399. wafan June 3, 2008 6:31 pm

    LTUF and d1 . . .

I used to go to the performances by the Governor bands. Without fail they would end the perfomance with Cheerio. It was an easy way for a standing ovation. HA!

They would start the piece as it was intended and on the last section they would play it like they were at the stadium. That auditorium rocked with the sound of a full-band in their maroon and white uniforms proudly playing for the last time (for the seniors) Cheerio! What a way to end your high school music career.

Still bring chicken-skin even as I type this.

  400. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 3, 2008 6:33 pm

    We are not alone.

Ronnie: I still cannot get into the Biography section – whether clicking on the link in Pomai’s # 313 post or entering the URL or clicking on the listing in my Favorites button. I can get to the front page of the site, but anything requiring registration is blocked.

Then when trying to re-register, the message was “user name taken.”

Any thoughts out there from blog Tekkietypes as to how to get into the password-protected areas of the tsaikodotcom website?

It was not intended to set off a battle when I asked about the Ward Warehouse CattleCall. Probably would have attended because the price asked is so far from what other buffets around town are getting.

The word BIO seems to have three meanings on this site – it’s only by knowing the context that one can intepret the content.

The news about the Wilton family’s loss is so sad; however, she certainly sounded as if she’d led a fulfilling life.

STEPHEN: Love the pix – when will the next workout be?

Off to pick up DrDoc and then on to another meeting. Have a good evening everyone. Those of you suffering from The Internet Cold, it will pass.

One of my “fond” memories of Honolulu Stadium.
Before I “transferred” to FHS, my other school used to clean the stadium for fundraising.
Picking up trash under the bleachers was *the worst* after Farrington games! Knee-deep the whole side!

Anybody ever got “bombed” by one soda under those bleachers?

Oh, one other thing I remember.
The scramble fo’ seats in the UH student section with people lying down for save seats for their friends. Funny…

  432. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:22 pm

    Boys on our Farrington team.

We’re gonna cheer for our Farrington team.

    d1, you mean 81.

  437. Garret June 3, 2008 8:30 pm

Good news about RGM! I’m very happy that he’s healthy enough to practice with the Texans. Hopefully he gets through the next 5 practices and then he’ll have a long time to rest and recover fully.

As for an injury update, Ryan Grice-Mullen was back practicing with the team today, as was Darius Walker and Chester Pitts.

The team has five more OTA sessions left before they break until training camp.

  438. Garret June 3, 2008 8:30 pm

8-year-old kid plays baseball, football (threw a lot of TD passes and scored on a play as a WR) and soccer…despite having just one leg!

  439. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:30 pm

d1, I think someone mentioned that about FHS at Roosevelt stadium.

  440. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:30 pm

Don’t remember our Roosevelt alma mater. ST does. Heck, even when I was a student, I didn’t know the words.

  441. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 8:31 pm

    Right on koakane

  442. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:32 pm

gigi, I’ve learned one thing about men, they can remember sporting events down to a single play but can’t remember where they put their keys, wallet, cell phone, etc. an hour ago.

  443. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 8:34 pm

    gigi,
I’m figuring you were still 17 during football season

  444. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:34 pm

stacy, does your hubby forget people’s names? Mine does. Instead of names, he says the guy did this or that, call the guy to do our stuff…

  445. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:35 pm

    ok, d1. I was 17.

  446. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 8:36 pm

    stacyj,

…not to mention birthdays, anniversaries, and bar mitvahs

  447. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:36 pm

gigi, with the size of his family, hubby even forgets his own cousins’ names. If he doesn’t introduce me, I know he can’t remember their name.

But, ask him to recall a drunken night in college and braddah can tell me the whole story without leaving out many details.

  448. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:37 pm

eh d1, how you knew I am Jewish?

  449. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 8:38 pm

you should take a clue from Jerry Glanville to help your hubby; everytime you folks meet someone, issue that person a numbered jersey.

  450. SteveM June 3, 2008 8:38 pm

stacyj — that’s not true of all men. I can remember where I put my keys, wallet, cell phone, etc. I just forget birthdays, anniversaries, first dates, relative’s names…. 🙂

  451. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:38 pm

I can’t keep it straight but off the top of your heads, who grad FHS?

  452. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:39 pm

d1, good idea! Since he’s an accountant, he remembers numbers — even the price of something that was on sale a few months ago!

  453. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 8:40 pm

    stacyj,

    Easy. Your Mom is Jewish.

btw, I forgot we should have consulted an “alleged, possibly, could have been” a cheerleader for da words. 😉

  454. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:42 pm

nah, my hubby doesn’t loose those items much but, it amazes me how when the boys get together, they can remember things like speeches the coaches gave during a specific game or where someone missed a hit during the 5th game of the 3rd year playing varsity football (and yadda, yadda, yadda) and yet, they don’t remember other things about life.

  455. gigi-hawaii © June 3, 2008 8:42 pm

stacy, how about their inability to drive to the right destination when TALKING! grrrr. Hubby missed the stadium offramp because he was busy talking about nonsense to me.

Just last Sunday, he forgot to turn left to the parking lot at HCC because — he was talking to me.

It’s so bad, I now tell him to shaddup and drive.

  456. SteveM June 3, 2008 8:42 pm

…but oddly, I can remember the blog names and all cattle calls I attended. Peaches is used to me calling her Peaches at home… and I won’t forget d1shima’s birthday 😆

Those HS games are where it all began for me. The memories are priceless.

  469. Garret June 3, 2008 8:55 pm

    d1shima,

As the National Football League continues to perfect a marketing strategy designed to command our attention 24/7/365, let’s not allow ourselves to confuse minicamp with the less formal (if not less formal-sounding) teaching sessions known as OTA’s, or organized team activities. Each club is allowed 14 OTA’s in addition to its minicamp

  470. stacyj June 3, 2008 8:56 pm

    gotcha d1

  471. midori7 June 3, 2008 8:56 pm

  551. d1shima [sez:] June 3, 2008 10:35 pm

Alright, so it wasn’t as “juicy” as I thought.

I met Stretch’s Mom. She is a nice woman.

    Thanks dpk.

    Now going moemoe…

Gotta hit da hay early tonight- tired from play practice and have a very early morning at work.

Nitey nite and sweet dreams, ka kou!

Stretch — don’t forget Peaches and I both knowing your mom too. 🙂

Speaking of first dates– turns out 3 of my classmates married lab school girls from the same year and club. No worry, we’re talking early 70’s. hwnstln was the one who arranged the first social. 😆 Where is that instigator, he hasn’t posted more than once in the past 4 months…?

Still feet tired from the heat. Good night everyone!

  567. stacyj June 3, 2008 10:55 pm

    Koakane, no worries…none taken, really.

Stretch, as small kids but not as adults. I can’t remember if you were ever part of the rugrats that ran around Dole when there was no school. If you did, remember Augie T and his brother Arnold? We used to have a blast on that campus. I remember going to your house for something. Can’t remember what the occasion was. And your mom always had pics of you and your sister in her office.

  570. Kekoa June 3, 2008 11:02 pm

Good Job DPK – To add more information to the discussion, the present day area to the right of the main structure was where the old wooden buildings used to be. Part of it is now a parking lot on the lower side entrance. That was also where the boarding students resided, and a small infirmary during the time the main campus was on the grounds. The front lawn provided an area for after school tackle football games between FHS & KS prep schoolers. Mutual respect for the game and each other kept things clean, no fights.

Charles Bishop did own the complex, as he did own the hall, and chapel as well as the Museum. He of course was key in putting her Estate in order immediately after her death. She was actually cash poor and land rich, so he funded the entire complex as one of the appointed 5 trustees of her estate.

  571. BowsForever June 3, 2008 11:02 pm

    We are not alone.

One of the unique things about Hawai`i is how important to everyone where folks went to high school. How do home-schooled kids handle that?

Garret: Belated Happy B’Day to Faith. How old is she now?

Rich: Celebrate twice for all of us here – and how young are you today?
FYI: Got in touch with my former agent to see if there might be some chance to get back in DaBiz. Haven’t heard back yet.

God night everyone – perhaps we’ll see some of you at practice tomorrow – assuming that I’m no longer boogery.

  574. Koauka June 3, 2008 11:40 pm

Howard Egami is one of the great fellows of Honolulu Stadium. Worked hard as a stadium vendor, and most of all one of the most kind and generous souls I ever met.

Regardless of what people thought of him, I always knew he was there to serve all his customers and made sure all enjoyed their experience at Honolulu Stadium.

A few years ago, I saw Howard outside Murakami Stadium. Stopped by and said hello. He said “Eh Moanalua!” Kinda shocked, but Howard remembered that I played baseball for Moanalua in the PAL league and he coached for the Alii’s. After a few minutes, he pulled a ticket out of his pocket and gave it to me. As I reached into my pocket to pay him, he grabbed my hand and said, “No need this is from me, thank you for remembering me.” “Enjoy, enjoy!”

Howard, mahalo! The world should be filled with more Howard Egamis.

  575. bighilofan2 June 4, 2008 12:22 am

    How’s Timmy Chang doing?

2005-signed with Arizona as undrafted free agent/released
signed with Detroit as free agent/released

2006-signed with Philadelphia as free agent/released
allocated by Philadelphia to NFL Europe/Rein Fire
completed 50 of 89 pass attempts for 659 yards, four touchdowns and
    three interceptions

2007-signed with Hamilton Tigercats of the CFL
Started two of 18 games played…completed 42 of 89 pass attempts
for 467 yards, seven interceptions and one touchdown

    Today-6/3/08

    Press Release:
The Ticats added a fifth quarterback Tuesday by signing former Florida Gators passer Chris Leak. The addition of Leaks makes the QB situation interesting to follow. He will compete with Quinton Porter and Timmy Chang for the third spot behind last year’s one and two, Casey Printers and Richie Williams.

The Tigercats preseason games start 6/12 and 6/19 and the regular season starts on 6/26

Outlook-For the 27 year old Timmy Chang it might be a poignant moment to realize that his storied football career dating back to his days at both UH and St. Louis High might soon be coming to an end. With the management bringing in two QB’s, Porter and now Leak, the future for Chang doesn’t look too good of him making the team. In fact it be surprising if he did, although here wishing he does have a good training camp and things go right for him.

    ST

howzit. suggestions for the blog. I googled honolulu advertiser, got to the main page, was looking for the dog lady leslie kawamoto, couldn’t find her, blog, so i googled her name and came up with her other old stuff but still no dog blog, so I googled Warrior Beat within the HA search space and got to the old Warrior Beat, which gave me the link to this current spot. Sure is a slow way of getting here, and as your blog starts banging 1000 hits things are really gonna get slow.

so my two requests is for leslieK to come over here once a day and say something about us animals and attach her link address here everyday for a couple of weeks – so we can remember her tag and go harass her animals as we walk thru the Tsaiko world almost daily if not more often.

and my second request is for the HA bigshots to fix the blog stuff samoa so we can get to this spot faster. should be automatic that warrior beat gets us to this space, instead of an extra (slow) trip to get here.

btw, I buy the HA everyday, faithfully, 7/365 to support da team. Been doin it since I started hanging out here some months ago.

    Hey Warriors,

20 years ago I had the opportunity to spend almost 2 weeks dormin at Hofstra U in August. The Jets were in training camp, on campus. I got to watch the team practice everyday. Up close. I saw Tall. Big. Muscles. Fast. Quick. I marveled at how many really good lookin athletes could be assembled in one place at one time. I’ll never forget the confident expressions on their faces.

I’m feelin that way about you. Represent. Step it up samoa, gangee!
    87 days.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  582. bighilofan2 June 4, 2008 1:58 am

i know we got 87 days to go, but maybe we should spend a moment talkin about fashion. da braddas gonna be all UA’d to da max. but wat about da coaches? lessee… colors coodinator? away game. baggy surf shorts cut below the knee lines? slippahs? polo shirts? big brimmed hats wit a coupla holes cut in da sides for da ear phones?

anybody learnin how fo signal da team cuz da noise gonna be loud an no can heeah? an day gonna practice changin da cadence an da count? da braddas gonna be trained to watch fo da signal for da count cadence?

decisions decisions… dis is haaahd wurk. gotta go da frigge, cool off.

I hope the current SMU Athletic Director Steve Orsini gets the Notre Dame job because it leaves the door open for some interesting possibilities in the future. Suppose Jones and his SMU team soars next year. and the year after. And Weiss ND team fizzles again this year and the next. Would Orsini again go after Jones again? First I hope Orsini gets the job, so at least the door is open for a fairy tale ending for Jones if this were to happen. Dreaming on my part? Maybe. But I can’t help salivating over the thought of having an offense with 4 and 5 star athletes and 5 of them going out for passes. It would be fun to watch. And it will be interesting to see how everything plays out for Orsini.

  621. Bulla June 4, 2008 7:33 am

    aloha to all the Tsaikos,

have a productive day. let’s see what other families (AWH) will come and join us, maybe some of our ‘senior’ bloggers can offer some insight.

is it hot, or is it just me? on june 1, it was like the thermometer went up on Oahu….at 530 am you can feel the heat. only people happy are HECO, with their escalating (homey, that means rising upward, and not at ala moana) prices.

we need to look for alternative energy sources instead of our current dependency matrix. they say natural gas is cheaper, koakane…is that true and have you put a study together. i thought at one our recent CC’s, not a BIO, that someone was discussing natural gas as a viable alternative, but i argued that i thought flatulence was more of a personal energy source….

more thoughts from others on this if you please. if that is the case, our house energy bill should be cut in 1/2 at least, i figure some of us should be able to sell the extra energy back to HECO, sort of like photovoltaic systems that are becoming popular.

have a good day, i think i stirred the pot up pretty good.

  622. bighilofan2 June 4, 2008 7:34 am

    whitey,

howzit. so give me yur cel. wen i get back frum Kona I call, come ovah. tinkin about 8ish pm if da event is Panaewa. da supahsecret is so secret even Doreen don’t know. but i’ll show up. gotta give me details.

    Have a Gtest Day everybody!

  623. Bulla June 4, 2008 7:37 am

that cheer is beginning to rumble in the valleys of honolulu, it reminds me of a cacophony of shrill voices from a place called Studebakers…..it sounds like, wait, be quiet, you can hear it tooo….

    midori, midori,
    what’s the story

    midori, midori
    what’s the story

we want MIDORI, we want MIDORI, we want MIDORI.

No surprise to anyone here but I was conceived in a YMCA building near UH campus . I use the name midori7 because that is my favorite drink when I go out and party all night. I go to baseball and basketball games so I have a few hours to sit and gossip with UHFan808 and check out clothes catalogs.
