Double duty
For the second time this training camp, the Rainbow Warriors today will have double practices. Unlike Friday’s afternoon practice, which focused exclusively on special teams, there will be a more expansive workout for today’s second practice.

Oh, yes, the players had a much-needed day off yesterday following nine consecutive days of practices.
Sort of.
There still were meetings. But they had most of the day to participate in off-campus functions.

It would be easy to overlook Donnie King, and not just because he’s (generously listed as) 5 feet 7.
He joined as a walk-on and, as of this past weekend, remained without a scholarship. He also is a prototypical slotback for an offense that no longer is in use at UH.
But in the spring game, the past Saturday’s scrimmage and every passing drill of training camp, King makes plays. Perhaps his size is an advantage as he zig-zags through defense. Perhaps it’s his quickness, which makes him difficult to jam at the line. He is resilient. King was one of 30 players on the Warriors’ 2011 active roster.

I know first things first, with USC….but, here is a nice little rundown on the Warrior’s next opponent, OSU, by Rick Neuheisel.
He stopped by Oregon State camp late last week for the Pac-12 Networks’ training camp tour series. After taping his segment, the former Colorado, Washington and UCLA coach took a few minutes to meet with reporters. Below are his thoughts on the 2013 Beavers.
On what stood out to him watching camp:
What jumped off the table to me was the depth at the tight end position. Connor Hamlett is obviously a proven entity at that position, but Caleb Smith and a number of the other guys, they all looked like carbon copies of each other. There’s so much you can do formationally when you have that kind of depth at that position. Stanford’s made a living doing it over the last several years. Since Coach Riley still likes two-back and that sort of thing, I see a lot of promise with respect to the tight end position.
On last season and what he expects from OSU this year:
They were on the cusp of something really, really special (last year). Getting off the great 6-0 start, and obviously the injury to (Sean) Mannion kind of disrupted things. Maybe he comes back a little too early to try and get into the race with (Cody) Vaz, who came in so brilliantly in his game against BYU. And they struggle up in Seattle, and had the Cardinal on the ropes in Palo Alto. You know, they look to have a great, favorable schedule early. And if they can get off to a good start, feel no ill effects from the quarterback competition, you’ve got to feel that this team is going to get better and better and be right there as they get into the month of November.
On the quarterback competition:
I just got a chance to interview both of them, and I think it’s an embarrassment of riches. If you’re Coach Riley, you’re ecstatic you have two quality quarterbacks. And I know he has to end up picking one, but I don’t think he cares who it is. I don’t think he has a favorite in this. I think he feels really comfortable and he just wants to do what he thinks is going to be right for the team. And the guy who’s not in there is going to be standing right next to Coach Riley in case something happens. And as we all know in this game, something usually does. Ultimately, it’s a great feeling if you’re the head coach.
On whether he has a gut feeling about who Riley may pick to start under center:
I don’t. I made some guesses last year when they were both around, and I was wrong. So I’m going to leave it to the guy who has the job and who’s gotten himself off the hot seat. Now he’s in the position of power, King Mike again. I’ll leave it to him. But I know this: he’s ecstatic he has both of them in the fold.
On impression of Brandin Cooks:
Well I thought Brandin Cooks was terrific coming out of high school. I don’t know if you knew this, but he was committed to me at UCLA. He ended up changing his mind and going to Oregon State. And while I’m disappointed I didn’t get to coach him, he’s turned out exactly as I envisioned. He’s an electric player, he’s got a dynamic personality that’s kind of transcends the other guys on the team. And there’s no question he’s going to be a wonderful player for the Beavers this year. He was an 1,000-yard receiver last year. I think he picks up where he left off and continues to put up big numbers.
On Beavers who have a chance to surprise people this season:
Well I know watching him, you’ve got to see great potential in a guy like Obum Gwacham. He’s just got a frame and athletic ability that you drool over. So hopefully the light comes on and he becomes that player for them. Because if he does, he takes a lot of pressure from doubling Cooks because you know what he’s capable of doing. There’s a guy, Richard Mullaney, he’s come a long way. He was in my camp down in southern California and I knew there was something special about him, and obviously he’s blossomed. But one of these guys, Kevin Cummings or whoever, has got to be a go-to guy so they can’t just double Cooks and feel like they can just go one-on-one with whoever is that No. 2 receiver.

Why can’t he be used as a slotback ala wes walker when walker was with the n.e. patriots and was widely used as their top receiver and fav receiver by brady and now at denver….why is chow so obstinate in not using a small slot and shifty slotback in king who would be difficult to jam at the line and can make plays…its chow’s obstinacy and one track mind that they will misuse donnie king ………anyway, since chow was hired as h.c. one can only wonder why he was never approached or hired as a head coach for any other div. 1 bcs team….all you had to do was observe chow handling of the team and stubborness in not being flexible last year and poor perception in his use of players and choice of coaches…….chow and price…..two locals….two losers…..

IS Chow the excuse maker reverting back to his 2-back pro set scheme again? If so, we’re in for another horrible, doomsday season.
Hmmn…I think the book is certainly still out on Chow, and that for all practical purposes, less than 2 seasons as a HC, it cannot be said, one way or the other, if his tenure is a successful one or not? History as they say, is a strong indicator of future performance; and we know he has been part of prolific winning programs.
Now, this is taken from another blog, but I think gives us a bit of insight to both his temperament and his ability to comport with change…This first assistant role would set the table for the next 37-years of Chow’s career. During Chow’s tenure at BYU he crafted a simple yet effective offensive philosophy: Trust that the ball and receiver will find he open spot on the field. Chow’s 27-year relationship with BYU soured in 2000 when long time head coach LaVell Edwards retired and Gary Crowton was hired as his replacement instead of the heir apparent Norm Chow. Nonetheless The Guru’s tenure in Provo produced a National Championship, a Heisman Trophy for Ty Detmer as well as a coaching tree that includes Mike Holmgren, Steve Sarkisian, Ted Tollner, Brian Billick and Andy Reid. Following his departure from BYU The Guru roamed the Nation as an offensive coordinator gun for hire. He made stops at NC State, USC, the Tennessee Titans, UCLA and Utah. By far Chow enjoyed the most success at USC where he helped guide the Trojans to two National Championships as well as a Heisman Trophy for Carson Palmer. Despite his success as a coordinator Chow maintained an unwavering desire to have an opportunity to be the head coach of his own program. Off the record many university presidents and athletic directors who interviewed Chow for head coaching opportunities commented that his brutal honesty and realistic outlook on future program success often played to his detriment….He is a realist, and I think we need to give him the benefit of the doubt–he has earned it.

Any word on when Billy Ray Stutzman will be able to practice? I hope Joey Iosefa’s rehab is coming along. One positive of Iosefa’s absence is the increased number of reps the young running backs have been receiving.
I remember when UH fans would call for former OC Paul Johnson’s head and for him to leave town (along with other colorful language) when he and the offensive coaches would leave the press box and head to the field during games back in the early 90s.

I’m hoping Billy Ray can start practicing soon. I saw him at practice walking around and chatting with guys on the sideline.
That being said, best to let him fully heal so he can run it hard during the season.
I thought we would keep Donnie King as a secret weapon for the USC game. But then again, maybe USC not paying a whole lot of attention to Hawaii. As for Hawaii’s offensive set, I would call it chop-suey; a mix of various formations. Sometimes QB in shot-gun; sometimes under center. Sometimes single-back set; sometimes pro-set. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

1. Norm Chow was offered the HC job at Kentucky, but he turned it down.
2. He interviewed for the Stanford job. Don’t know if he was offered. But, his comment after the interview was “the total amount of salary available for assistant coaches was
considerably insufficient”. The guy who was hired went 6-17.
Harbaugh was next guy hired at Stanford.

I don’t remember fans telling Paul Johnson to leave. I believe he only stayed 3 years and his offense under Wags was successful. I’m confused.
ESPN’s college football live reported that the USC will likely be either Max Wittek or Cody Kessler. Freshman Max Browne might redshirt. Wittek was Barkley’s backup and Kessler have little to no actual playing time in a game. All this means is that there is a lot of questions about the Trojans. Maybe that’s good for the home team.

I promise not to harp on chow if you promise not to keep pushing all the reasons why we should all just “chust in chow”.
The last time the blog had the chow is good, chow is bad discussion, it was agreed by most that chow should get the benefit of the doubt because: (1) he has had only one season under his belt as HC, not an assistant, to show his stuff and recruit; and, (2) he is a local boy.
All the talk about chow being responsible for “grooming” or “training” Heisman winners and that he has been a part of winning programs all over the country means nothing at this point. We looked bad last year. We got spanked bad last year. At this point, all that matters is what did chow do last year and what does it appear chow will do this year.
That being said, let’s talk UH football. Where are we on O? The D seems to be showing signs of being almost ready to go.
Warrior Dave: My memory might be a little foggy, but the story I read was that Paul Johnson, for whatever reason, had his critics here when he was OC. Don’t know why, but he used to have stuff yelled at him repeatedly by fans in the stands when he made his way down to the field. Once, after a UH loss at Aloha Stadium in 1994, a fan kept yelling at him to leave town, Johnson, reportedly, turned to the fan and said, “maybe I will.” He left to take the OC job at Navy the next year. I think he took Kenny Niumatalolo with him. Mike Sewak and DC Chris Smelan also left after that season.
I guess some UH fans were not big fans of the spread offensive under Johnson.

46-IT You make some good insights. That said, I think in any event, it leaves us with two basic suppositions on Chow: one, he knows the game and will eventually acclimate to his staff and players; or two, he has only won with studs on his team. Now, if you are a believer of the latter, the good news would be that it would logically follow that he has a great eye for talent and is going to be an asset for the program.
Only time will tell–personally, my own personal preference would have been to bring in Duane Akina, and he in turn, recruit Brian Norwood to be his DC. One, it follows the line of lineage set-down by Tomey. Two, you emphasize the defensive side of the ball (I think, JJ was a comet, that comes in twice in a lifetime, and the fans are still infatuated, but moreover still expecting that type of offensive output). Three, and probably the most important to me, (but, not anyone else) I know those guys and played with them, so that would have been incredibly fun.
But, as always that’s just my 2 cents….

45. Hawaii has so much more questions than USC that I dont think it really matters much. Hawaii has 0 experience at QB. Barely any experience on the O line. Our WRs are all pretty new. Gant is our top guys and this is going to be his 1st healthy season. Our other top guys are freshman and JC transfer.
I think our Defense will hold up fine in the 1st half. But I think our biggest issue against USC is going to be our offense not keeping them off the field and we get gassed by the 2nd half.
Morgan Breslin had a field day last year. Don’t see that changing this year.
I just hope we keep this game some what competitive…. 21 points and il be pretty happy.

Is it easier to build a strong offense or strong defense? Love a hard hitting defense like the Tomey years but also love offense like the JJ era. Not sure what the Chow era will bring.

Jeezy, those are realistic observations. There’s no way to get around the difference in talent. USC just has more horses than we do. Still hoping for a UH upset though.
Chow is Pau also has a realistic (if not a little pessimistic) view of the home team. It’s just the way he state’s his opinion that tends to ruffle the feathers. I’ve never been one to hope for failure the way he does.

If, by way of coaching genius we are to upset USC, will ChowIsPau be cheering on the boys? Or will he be upset with Chow’s success? Or both (happy for UH but not for Chow)? Hating can be complicated. Just be happy . . . much easier.
From my vantage, and this is from the lens of the warriors, D is easier to build. One, Hawai’i has a history of strong defensive teams. Two, many of the players coming out of Hawai’i are better suited for D, and thus we have a natural recruiting ground. Finally, strong defensive football always allows you to be in the game.
OSD is right. There were lolos at home games who used to yell at Paul Johnson as he made his way thru the stands on his way to the coaches booth. I could see how upset he would get. I could not hear what was said as I sat in a level above but I could clearly see what was going on.

ChowIsPau doesn’t know ‘jack’ about the game of football, otherwise he wouldn’t be singing that song. In fact anyone on this board who is throwing that crap around about coach Chow really are not very informed.
First of all anyone who questions Chow’s capacity to coach D-1 football ‘really is in a fantasy land’. The man has forgot more about that than you’ll no doubt ever learn. Just because his methodology doesn’t agree with your sophomoric impatience to have UH a Bowl bound team this year, certainly cannot be seen as flawed, just because you dont like it!
Everybody who has played or been around the game on that level can see he’s taking a very considerate and deliberate action to build a team around the caliber of players he ‘knows’ that he will need in order to compete consistently in D-1 College football….that means the big boys too! So my advice, before you really begin to look foolish..is to ramp down the big mouth critique until the seasons end.
A season is just a season. Lets all take a seat, enjoy the games, each others company, and all the good stuff that comes with football season. There will be plenty of time, but moreover, much more evidence and information, after this up-coming season, to say if Chow is the real deal or not. Historically, JJ started the quickest, 9-3, but slumped to 3-9 in his second season, Von Appen went 2-10 and never got it off the ground. Tomey and Wags, had 5 wins….so, at this juncture, Chow is not the worst or the best; and we can all place a much more accurate assessment of his early tenure at the conclusion of the season.
Nothing would make me happier than to see UH upset USC…It will take a monumental effort, but…it can be done. It will take players playing flawless and coaches coaching flawless. Let roll the ball onto the field and see what happens!

Asking someone to cut back on the Haterade does not mean we have undeniable loyalty to the current HC, or that we also were blindly loyal Von Appen. Support the boys, support the home team. You want them to do well, regardless of who is coaching the team.

Waipahu advances to American Legion World Series to be held in North Carolina. Waipahu represents the NorthWest region. They pounded Oregon 14-3 in finals. Had to play 2 games today coming from the losers bracket to win it all.

What if…. Ben Jay approaches the guy that purchased Lanai. He’s willing to inject $5,000 000 annually for 5 years IF, UH turned over all naming rights and gave him free reign to make name changes including school colors and mascot during this time. With the injection, the program would be in the black with a possible surplus. HOWEVER, the male teams could be know as The swimming Honu’s and the Women as the Dancing Swan’s.

The book is still out on Coach Chow? Really? The man knows how to be a very successful D-1 coach. As they say, “You must have the Jimmys and the Joes capable of executing the X’s and the O’s.” You cannot transform an offense over one or two seasons. You plan recruit, plan recruit recruit, and then plan recruit recruit recruit some more. You pray your key skill guys and defense leaders (a) lead and (b) stay healthy. UH does not yet have the depth luxury to retool or reload. Maybe if we put our support behind Coach Chow we can help him get there … or maybe not. But we can sure as hell help him fail. Lets not go that route, toward self-fulfilling prophecy. Who you gonna get anyway? The list was long after Coach Mac; its a much shorter list now. At the end of June Jones tenure we had the whole state helping the UH Program recruit and retain the best D-1 football athletes once they came here. Are we doing that now? From the sound of these few UH blogs, it sure doesn’t sound like it.

Of course, it would be an utter failure if USC — with its money, location and tradition — can’t sweep Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona State and Washington. It would be pathetic if USC couldn’t sweep those teams.
By the way, Chow did meet with Larry Ellison’s top assistant.
The team has so many new good players. Players coming all the time. That’s Chow’s doing. Give him a break. Most Pac 12 teams wont win USC and Oregon State this year. The schedule is hard. Support the team. Stop hating on people and the team because your life sucks.

Find a QB and offense is way easier to build… You saw how things clicked with Colt Brennan regardless how bad our O line was. Obviously the offense was a lot better the year before with a better O line and NAte Ilaoa but good QB makes a world of different…
Good defense is more collective and it takes successful recruiting classes to build a solid 2 deep depth chart all around. You need pass rushers, leadership from the LB, and DBs that can cover. Also need to stay healthy with the Big boys in the middle to stuff the run… Safety play is huge… Mana Silva made a world of difference playing Centerfield for us…

Don’t know exactly where he lives in Honolulu. My local college friend travels a great deal as his business keeps him busy abroad. I will e-mail you his name and phone information. I am VERY PROUD of him as he is highly successful and a WONDERFUL friend over the years. And just too think I met him in UH freshmen psychology 101 as he was the FIRST local young person that I ever talked too.
37 years later we are still together in one heart, one spirit and one mind !

pretty sad that some people pretend to be fans while only posting negative things.Actually these people must have pretty pathetic lives because they catch their jollies tearing down the program and coaches!!!
I am so impressed with the negative thought process to come up with such a brilliantly negative screen name that just cries out to you and catches your attention…Yes Chowispau is hands down not just a little pessimistic but how’s about totally pessimistic. You know I have to give it to Coach Chow because he and his coaches are really recruiting their behinds off and not wavering from their process. There is no guarantees in life so I wouldn’t write off Uh from having a good game against USC and maybe just maybe in the process of building this team from all the hard work and maybe a possible win. That’s why we play the games on the field and not on the blog. So support our student/athletes who give so much of themselves to be successful on the field and in the classroom and support Coach Chow and his staff. Didn’t a lot of the successful coaches over time had a rough start to like Bill Walsh of the 49ers. Don’t forget as a reminder that June Jones had a bad 2nd season at 3 and 9. I’m sure Chowispau wanted to make up a screen name for Jonesispau too hmmm good thing this blog wasn’t around back then.
#53 is correct – Coach Chow has to coach up. Even Mack and JJ had to make coaching changes to start the upswing. Give Chow a break and support him – hopefully the coaching gets better then last….

I sure hope Chow made a good impression on Ellison’s assistant. I wonder if he’s open to be linked to a college since he was a college drop out? It was a while back but in his commencement speech at Yale, he called the graduates “losers” and called for the undergraduates to drop out. He said the graduates would collect their pathetic “$200,000 paychecks from drop outs like Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Michael Dell, and himself (all among the richest people in the US).
Mack had un upswing season in 2010, going 10-4, with that feeling that the run and shoot success was back again. The highlight of the season was handing Nevada and Kaepernick their only loss of the season, denying them of a BCS game. who knows what Hawaii football would be like today if Mack was given a little more time………
Mack couldn’t recruit, and had questionable sanity. We should have taken care of JJ when we had the chance. And we should have looked elsewhere for a coach after JJ. Coming off the undefeated season, we might have been able to get a real up and comer over to our school. Chow may ultimately prove to be an unsuccessful head coach, but not for lack of trying. His staff is recruiting HARD. Harder than Mack an JJ.

yes they are really doing a damn good job recruiting especially our local boys. My friends nephew was highly recruited by all the PAC 10 schools. he actually wanted to stay home and play in front of his family but Mac did not make much effort .The other schools recruited aggressively and he is a starter at a PAC 19 school
