Crossing that bridge
Assistant coach Chris “Demo” Demarest’s recruiting pitch involves letting a prospect kick the tires and check under the hood. He will talk about UH’s opportunities, assets and shortcomings.
“Coach Demo told me how everything was going to be, and when I got out here, it was the way he said it would be,” cornerback Barry Higdon said.
Higdon is one of several newcomers who begins the so-called bridge program tomorrow. The program, which is open to all UH students, runs from tomorrow through July 31. (UH’s first practice of training camp is Aug. 2.) The program offers two three-credit classes, and enables newcomers to adjust to college while earning credits.
Higdon was a highly regarded cornerback from Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Fla. He was measured at just under 6 feet 2 and 190 pounds during his physical examination this past week.
“What made me pick Hawaii were the opportunities — football-wise and education-wise,” Higdon said. “I’m happy to be at the University of Hawaii. I’m going to humble myself, play hard, and do my best to learn under Norm Chow and Norm Chow’s system.”

Exactly.
The point is that only the okole-attentive actually set aside money. And that’s why it is time that UH stop including incentive clauses in contracts.
Several years ago, UH decided to spend profits from a bowl game on other needs. The result was the coaches had to wait a year to receive their promised bonuses for the team reaching the bowl. Incentives don’t work because: 1) Coaches want to win and they’re not working harder for the extra money; 2) if a team does well enough to trigger a bonus, a department that is always in the red is first using any extra revenue to pay off other bills.
So, UH should pay a coach more or pay the coach the same, but without incentive clauses, at least there won’t be any additional expenses.

I think you could budget for the bonuses. But then you end up rooting against success to save money.
How about disincentives like a cut in pay if you don’t reach benchmarks like bowl games, attendance or academics. To me, that’s a stronger motivation to reach those objectives.
Unfortunately, that’s not how the business works
Besides, these goals shouldn’t need incentives to be reached. They should be expected.
ST — Incentive clauses are OK if the base salary is low.
Maybe they should be called “performance” clauses?

Someone decided he would evaluate every offensive line of the MW conference. According to that person, Utah State is expected to have the best o-line in the conference. Hawaii ranked number nine. Just have to take it for what its worth…something to read in the offseason.

I think Chow’s salary of 550k has incentives where he could make as much as a million in total if he were to reach all his goals.

Question– My Mom who turns 90 years old wants to attend the USC game for her birthday. I would need to get a wheel chair for her to get to the stadium as walking the long way would be hard for her. ( two plates and 14 pins in her ankle). But she can
walk to her seat with her cane. Is Aloha Stadium have good wheel chair access? I want to have her picture taken on the field at Ching Field on the H logo. Every year we take her to do a fun event for her birthday, hot air ballooning, para sailing, something fun and crazy.
BTW my Moms nickname is Tickie after Tickie Vasconsellos.
Do I need to make arrangements with the stadium?
Foodland poke better than Tamura’s and Tanioka’s? Is Fresh Catch even on that list?

Accessible seating shall be limited to wheelchair users, individuals who use mobility aids (crutches, walkers, canes, etc.) and individuals with mobility impairments and their companions. Each disabled patron may purchase one (1) disabled ticket and three (3) companion tickets. There are 424-wheelchair seats on the lower concourse level.
Accessible seating options are available on the main concourse level. Assisted listening devices are available upon request at the Information Room located on the outer concourse, Section A. Guests with disabilities and their companions are given first priority for service at the elevator located on the south end of the stadium. Ushers are located throughout the stadium to assist any guest requiring assistance in locating their seats and stadium services.
Aloha Stadium provides free wheelchair loaners for Guests that require assistance to their seats. Wheelchairs are located in the North and South First Aid Stations.
Personal wheelchairs can be stored in the following areas:
A. Main Concourse- South & North First Aid Stations.
B. Upper Concourse Sections R and EE (Guests should provide a lock to secure their wheelchairs).
The Box Office is open Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 5:00pm. Hours vary on Event dates. The information line is: 808-486-9300.

polymom, my father turns in 2 of his season tickets in exchange for wheelchair seating (the stadium resells his original seats), so your best bet is to contact the stadium to exchange your tickets for the wheelchair ones (we have noticed many fans using the wheelchair seats without getting the tickets).
remember to bring a hat if you will be on the mauka side…5pm kickoff.
