Pigskin to sheepskin

Ashley Lelie indeed should be regarded as a role model — and not just because he was the highest-drafted player in Warrior football history.

Lelie is inspiring because of his post-NFL life. Lelie, who entered the NFL draft after his junior year, returned to UH to complete work on a bachelor’s degree. For Lelie, it wasn’t just a paper chase. He enjoys studying and learning. During Greg McMackin’s tenure, one of Lelie’s duties as a student manager was to monitor the sign-in list for training-table breakfasts. Lelie used that time to read.

Lelie, who earned a BA a couple of years ago, will pursue a master’s degree at the University of Nevada, where he will work as a graduate assistant for the Wolf Pack. His wife will remain at UH for another year while completing work on a PhD.

Lelie is an example that, unlike football eligibility, there is no expiration date in the pursuit of  a greater education.

Defensive end Beau Yap suffered a fracture in his right foot on March 21, underwent surgery March 24 and now it appears his cast will be removed in early May. That should provide enough cushion for Yap to be ready for the start of training camp in August.

UH coaches like to say that injuries create depth. Defensive ends Craig Cofer, Penitito Faalologo and Ikaika Cavaco-Amoy, and defensive tackles Mike Andrade and Hunter Thomson are getting more reps because of injuries on the defensive line.

Running back Marcus Langkilde, the star of last year’s intrasquad scrimmages, has been impressive.

The hitting will increase in the next couple of practices, but don’t expect scrimmage-like situations until the April 11 practice.

It appears that Kealakehe High running back David Fangupo, who signed with the Warriors last month, will be visiting this weekend.

Former UH quarterback Dan Robinson visited the Warriors yesterday.

Interesting tidbits from today’s article on Ben Jay. I know the idea of closing sections off has surfaced on the blog before. Doesn’t look like it will save anywhere near as much as once thought.

    —————

Re: Closing sections of the stadium to save money

“I was told we’d only save $1,700 a game,” Jay said, shaking his head. “It’s not worth it. It isn’t worth the headache of moving all those season-ticket holders around.”

On the idea of a new stadium:

“He’s thinking big picture,” Jay said. “The governor still wants to build another stadium, and that would be nice, 30-35,000 seats.”

I’m wondering, what kind of arrangement USC has when they play in the Colosseum or UCLA when they go to Pasedena.

Are the arrangements there different than Aloha Stadium and UH? For one, I’m guessing that the State of California does not own those entities, so that may be a big difference.

To me, the issue would be a moot one if the arrangement between the State and UH, both being State entities, would be all things UH would be UH. So they have to clean up, provide security, admin (for insurance, power, water, etc.) etc., during their events, but they get ALL revenue from the event, including parking, concessions, advertisement, etc..

BUT, our State does not operate in that way as I am also assuming that the State makes money off the UH to keep having to go to the Legislature for funding to keep it from falling down.

  11. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:25 am

    Here’s what I think:

    • There’s no way we’re seeing a new stadium in the next 15 years. Where’s the money? Where’s the location? It’s not even in the think-about-it stage.

    • The goal shouldn’t be to move people into the lower section to make the stadium appear fuller, the goal should be to make the stadium fuller.

I have to fly to Oahu to see a game. It costs me at least $700 for me and my wife for airline tickets, hotel and game tickets. That does not include my wife’s shopping when she is there.

  14. tom mui April 3, 2013 8:29 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

One wonders about how the UH vs. Aloha Stadium Authority will end up.

    (Prediction – business as usual).

I wonder about this morning’s article about UH and Senator Kim – big bucks for UH in-house attorneys and outside counsel. Maybe there should be a look by the Senators to see if just hiring outside counsel on retainer might be cheaper and eliminate the UH in-house legal people – they seem to like to pass the buck to outside counsel to begin with.

  15. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:30 am

UH does get to advertise at its football games. Those cushioned signs that ring the field are UH-related.

What I wonder is why the stadium pays a company to sell the permanent ads in the stadium.

I think the stadium folks should:

    • Sell their own ads (and keep all the profits).

    • Get into the concert business.

If I recall, the stadium makes more money from events held in its parking lot (swap meet, 50th State Fair) than inside the stadium.

  16. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:34 am

I think UH needs in-house counseling, but it needs to spend the money to be competitive in hiring good attorneys.

Also, this is what I think:

    • UH should hire outside custodial services. Then UH doesn’t have to pay for benefits.

    • In turn, the current custodians should get together and create their own custodial company. Now they can expand and get more jobs. More jobs mean more money for them.

  17. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:36 am

    This is what I think:

    • UH should hire a marketing company. There should be bonus payments/profit-sharing based on attendance.

    • It goes back to benefits. If they’re in-house, UH is paying the benefits.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:40 am

Of course, it’s all a big cycle.

While the sale of merchandise might go to Upper Campus, the profits are placed into a fund that covers the athletic department’s deficits.

  19. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 3, 2013 8:43 am

    #11,

I am sure, well at least hope, that the ultimate goal is to fully fill those seats. I think short term goals should be to reduce cost where appropriate. I’m just surprised closing those sections result in a savings of $1700.

As for the stadium…How long did it take for UH West Oahu campus to finally be built?

  20. alnbama April 3, 2013 8:43 am

I was looking at the SA football practice pic’s, and I saw alot of pic’s of Josh Gist. Is he a walk-on QB, or does he have a scollie.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:44 am

    Gist has been playing cornerback.

It appears he is doing a good job.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2013 8:45 am

Well, he was covering a wideout, so I assume he’s a corner.

Ok, just confusing, cause in the pic’s looks like he’s passing the ball. Maybe they just mislabeled the name for the pics.

    #18:

how much, if any, does upper campus put into the UHAD “deficit” fund from all lower campus “parking fees” when athletic events are held?

It should be easy to determine should one compare what the normal daily receipts are as compared to parking receipts when athletic events are held – the difference should be deposited into UHAD deficit fund controlled by upper campus.

Greed, power/control, and money – wonder which is the most important to those who hold these close to their bodies?

  33. jimmy the lock April 3, 2013 9:59 am

USC has control over the Coliseum. They have exclusive rights to manage and operate it.

  34. primo123 April 3, 2013 10:02 am

To get more people into the stadium, the words “free” or “minimal” has to come into play…..if that doesnt increase attendance, then they should shut the stadium down and play all their games at Roosevelt…….imo…..

  35. Ralph April 3, 2013 10:19 am

Out sourcing custodial work at UH won’t happen, the union won’t let it happen on its watch. Contract workers will save the UH on benefits, and we all know health care insurance is one of the big ticket items driving costs up, so is state retirement benefits.

  36. Ralph April 3, 2013 10:27 am

JJ contracted Steinberg to do its rebranding and marketing, JD stopped it, too bad, because I think their idea of marketing would have brought in a lot more revenue than they are currently under external AD, John McNamara. Under McNamara our marketing has been stagnant, what new revenues has he and his staff generated over the last 6-8 years under Frazier and JD- status quo.

If the Legislature continues to approve new or old BOR member based on the same criteria, will there ever be a time that the “high mucka, mucka” regents really put the University and student first?

Is there a current BOR member who is a “plain, ordinary Joe Shmo” without a CEO, COO, President, etc of a local company attached to his/her name?

If transparency is important, have the Chancellor make public how all the other departments are doing so we, the general public, can form an opinion on how well UH is being run – would that not be one of the main responsibilities of Greenwood? after all, tuition fees and tax dollars are the primary source of income for UH expenses.

like spokespersons at any place/level, notice how most of them come from the media – whether it be radio or TV – hmmmm!

I’m a casual golfer too but we should strongly consider converting the Ala Wai Golf Course as a stadium site. Lots of room for the stadium and the necessary parking. Pro Bowl guests walk to the game from Waikiki. UH home games are right down the street. Golfers wanting muni rates can travel a little further than they(we) are used to.

Way things go in this town, think anyone alive right now’ll be with the Lord by the time a decent football stadium’s built to replace Aloha. Look at how long taking for rail )which itself might be completed AFTER a “UH football stadium” would be built[!]). Activists bound to find, what, 20 burial sites wherever they decide to build a “new stadium” (and it’s GONNA be on Oahu, 100% sure about that, yes?), gonna look like 3D chess board by the time they done w/that one.

NFL loves that stadium enough. Hard to argue against — a Grease admits — l’rust bucketté.

    (From Stephen Tsai #11)

    Here’s what I think:

    • There’s no way we’re seeing a new stadium in the next 15 years. Where’s the money? Where’s the location? It’s not even in the think-about-it stage.

    • The goal shouldn’t be to move people into the lower section to make the stadium appear fuller, the goal should be to make the stadium fuller.

Sir, host, I agree with you 100%!

    Make that 200%!

    300%!

All the talk about new stadiums, but a lot of different people and grous, is absolute non-sense!

Those who preach such B.S., should slap themselves in the face!

    It’s stupid!

  67. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 3, 2013 2:27 pm

Ben Jay seems to be advocating for 30-35,000 seat stadium. Does he mean in addition to Aloha?

I can’t see the need for two stadiums with the operating/main costs etc.

So at that capacity, wouldn’t the Pro Bowl say Buh-Bye?

  68. Whats up April 3, 2013 2:55 pm

I have to agree with ST about not needing a new stadium at this moment. While it would be pretty cool to have a on campus stadium, it just not a priority in this down economic climate nationwide/worldwide. First priority is to build, remodel and fix up the whats on campus for now. Listen, no matter where you put a Stadium on Oahu there is going to be traffic, parking issues and there is always somebody that is going to complain it’s to far Windward or it’s to far Leeward or it’s just too far, because its not within walking distance. Then your going to have some people complain that the new stadium causes too much traffic in there neighborhood. Then there will be complaints that the new stadium brings to many drunks and rowdy fans near or on the streets in someone’s neighborhood, unwelcome fans parking on the streets or in yards in close by neighborhoods, lets not forget the noise complaints! All the permits and logistics associated with a new stadium would be a expensive and daunting undertaking.

Tsai is right! A new multi million dollar stadium is not a priority at this moment, plus I have a hunch a on campus stadium will not make a significant improvement in student attendance. In 2007, when Hawaii was undefeated the attendance improved significantly, which is saying one thing, the students and Warrior fans will attend games ferociously when the Hawaii Warriors are winning! And say what you want, of the 120+ FBS (D1) schools only a very small percentage have students and fans that will fill a stadium for a losing team! Most of the FBS teams have fan attendance problems just like Hawaii and they have on campus stadiums. So, lets face it, a winning team or product will fill the Aloha Stadium, period!

Plus, the Aloha Stadium is located in a pretty good spot central to a majority of the population of Oahu with access to H1, H2 and H3. And it’s already being remodeled, retrofitted and it may not be perfect but what is? Parking has been addressed with shuttle buses to aid in bringing fan in from satellite parking locations, which aids in traffic relief from the stadium. I’ve been to many stadiums and the one that had a unbelievable amount of traffic of 109,000 fans at University of Texas Longhorns Stadium!!! I had to park miles away and walk to the stadium, no shuttle service! But you know what? I bitched the whole walk there and back to the car! But the Texas fans didn’t mind one bit about walking a few miles to attend a game, which still has me confused? To each his own I guess? I watched #2 Texas with QB Colt McCoy play Kansas that day and there was a solid 109,000 fans there. So I’m guessing, for a teams like Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Georgia, etc; 40,000 fans is a bad attendance figure. While for Hawaii that would be a undefeated season attendance to get 40,000 fans in attendance. And some of those schools are in poorer population centers but still have great attendance from there fans. But I say again, to each his own?

So we could debate the pro and cons of a new stadium (on campus or not) but its not a priority right now. The Aloha Stadium is a satisfactory location for the foreseeable future, considering the State is hurting for money and building a multi million dollar in a down economy would be an unwise use of funds. And yes, the NFL Pro Bowl does matter, it brings in money and helps with the recruiting efforts of the Warriors by NFL scouts dropping by the school and the game itself.

  69. Not an Expert April 3, 2013 3:47 pm

The site at Halawa should be the future site as well for the new Stadium. Get the best engineers, architects and developer to put their minds together and build the stadium while the other is still being used. Meaning build it on the current parking area.

First build a multiple story parking structure that will take care of the parking for the current stadium and the future stadium. Build it so that a hotel or motel complex can be on the property as well. Since UH has to pay for the MWC teams to play in Hawaii, cheaper accomodations. Also outer island fans can come in and stay in the hotel and attend a game without having to go to Waikiki. A shuttle service to and from the airport and stadium.

Build it to have the flea market continue to use it and help pay for the ongoing cost. Have restaurants and selective type of business on the site that can be accessable also for outside traffic to help the establishments have a flow of customers when there are no events being held. If the hotels can be used while there are no UH football games those customers at that time can also patronize the restaurants and shops. Maybe they’ll be tourist and outer island people that could keep it filled for non football season time. who wants a central location and not have to be in Waikiki.

Have certain government agencies located there too that will be accessible to many from all parts of the island with tons of parking.

Not just a stadium but a complex that can be created so that it can bring in more money to all parties.

  73. Moocher April 3, 2013 5:07 pm

stadium is not the problem…it seems to me its the contracts or agreements that are the problem… along with marketing and winning.

Surely, if the stadium makes more money with the goings on outside the stadium more so then inside the stadium…it means they are not maximizing facility usage and they along with food/drink vendors will stick it to whoever has an event and the people who go to the event inside the stadium. They have to to make up for lost time, large and short inventories, etc.

It’s not UH that is in a bind…. it’s football and a D1 football program status that is in a bind as far as where games can be played. Maybe this is how upper camps sees it, how else can they be so disconnected?

I think the stadium authority knowing how the stadium works should offer two contracts. One for events outside the stadium and one for events inside the stadium. This way, either UH can see if its in their best interest to take a contract such as this… and if not, then the contract should be written where UH will pay a set figure of X amount to whoever takes the inside stadium contract.

The stadium, UH, the state… they are all on the same team and need to act as such to make a linear contract where helping one lends itself to helping another as an entity.

anyways, i don’t know the whole dealings behind this and if its possible, but if i could throw an opinion into the ring, for starters this wold be mine… separate the contracts. I might be way off base 🙂

I strongly oppose any construction on the site of my Golf Course. It is an open space that needs to be preserved as is. It is the busiest course in the western USA and is a profit center.(If its not, raise the rates for non-residents). The student attendance at UH has never been good for football at Aloha Stadium. Student support of UH Athletics at best is mediocre. Making the sports programs at UH profitable or self sustaining is huge challenge because it competes with every recreational activity Hawai’i offers and the many keiki and high school sports. We have to face it. UH wins, fans come. They lose, fans don’t come.

  79. kawika49 April 3, 2013 7:40 pm

Happy Hump Day. Great weather here in Hilo for Merrie Monarch.

The City of Pasadena owns the Rose Bowl. The voters of Pasadena voted against having a Pro Football team there. Reasons, traffic, noise and finances. The City would have had to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade for a pro team. But the voters agreed that the Rose Bowl will be UCLA’s home field. UCLA pays a fee for the use. UCLA owns all the advertising money. They do that in house.

USC just signed an agreement for the exclusive use of The Coliseum. But, it’s only for ten years. The agreement USC made with the City of Los Angeles that they will renovate the Coliseum at a cost of 200M dollars.

Why do folks want a new stadium? I love Aloha Stadium. Easy access, cheap parking. Go to a USC game and

pay 80 bucks just for parking. If Aloha Stadium is good enough for the NFL…good enough for UH.

PS–17 injured players at USC for Spring ball. I heard they have zero depth. Go WARRIORS, BEAT SC!

I know. And why did I read the text? It would be much better if I didn’t know that the corpse is real. It’s one thing to pose with the Walking Dead-style fake zombie (even naked she is as trashy as can be, I don’t expect nothing more from her) and another being groped by the real, stinky, rotting corpse. Even Lindsay Lohan didn’t stoop so low. Yet.Report this comment as spam or abuse

I worked with the movie in providing “Albany Props” so it would be as authentic as possible….several of the local restaurants, entertainment venues and sporting teams provided us with anything and everything they could use in the movie….this included DMV and City of Albany posters…the entire film team was gracious and could not have been nicer in seeking our assistance….even though they did not film in Albany, Albany is still a part of the movie….stay tuned, other projects in the works.
