It’s not about us

Whenever there is a national story about something unfortunate — or, in yesterday’s situation, bizarre —  involving a resident of the 50th state, we always hear the refrain: This will make Hawaii look bad.

The inclusiveness is because this is a state that treats each as his own. It is why many took an interest in Philadelphia when Shane Victorino played there, why we texted support for Jasmine Trias, why we watch Hawaii Five-O on Monday nights.

And it is why most share the responsibility for things that are not of our doing, such as the Wonder Blunder and Dog the Bounty Hunter, to name two.

We’re Hawaii. This is what we do. We take things personally, even though we’re not affected personally.

But while yesterday’s revelations were bizarre and intriguing, and in the next few days (weeks? months?) will become even more bizarre and more intriguing, it is not our burden.

Except for some reputations and the guy who finished third in the Heisman voting, no harm was done.

Hawaii will be fine.

We’ll be fine.

ST. Whether from Hawaii or not, this news is ridiculous. I don’t think it is a Hawaii thing. This news has over shadowed Chip Kelly and Lance Armstrong.

So obviously it will be big news in Hawaii. Only difference really is that there are more naive people in Hawaii to believe Manti actually got hoaxed when he still has spoken publicly about it. If he just comes clean about it, no one will really care.

  12. Moocher January 17, 2013 8:29 am

    Amen….

With another opinion…what will make hawaii look bad is not what one person does, it’s what we do collectively as a community.

To the Te’o family, what was done either right or wrong does not matter. What’s happening now must be amazingly difficult and I pray you all find peace and support through this time. After reading comments from espn, I had to say enough is enough and my concern is no longer with what happened-my concern is the health of a family’s spirit and love for one another. I think one thing Hawaii is good at is realizing when humanity and concern and aloha trumps all.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Maybe today’s the day that all the facts are made known so that judgment(s) may be made.

I really don’t care for guys that go away claiming they are playing “for Hawaii”. The only ones I care for are the ones that are playing for Hawaii, University of.

In my previous life, I used to joke that I only liked to hear one side of the story as hearing both sides only confused me. That is perhaps why I don’t like to throw stones until all the facts are brought out.

    ‘nuf said.

  14. Old Diver January 17, 2013 8:32 am

What most people don’t realize is reality shows are actually scripted. Jersey Shore, The Housewives, The Real World etc are all scripted just like Hawaii 50. Only those unaware of this believe the Catfish show is real. Even shows like the Bachelor which is currently on TV is highly scripted and manipulated with scenes shot over. Sorry for bursting some bubbles here but in general people are not that stupid. In general.

  15. Old Diver January 17, 2013 8:35 am

The other confusing part is during a taped interview Manti tells the reporter that he received a letter from Lennay the day before the Stanford game a month after she died. He also tells the reporter that he received a letter from her just before the Wake Forrest game which took place on November 17th. Don’t know what to make of this.

  16. Wes'side Warrior January 17, 2013 8:36 am

    Howzit, Gang!

Yes, it’s true… we do take ownership of nearly everything that is “Hawaii”… proud of the good things, and embarrassed of the bad or negative. We’d like to believe it’s a unique position, but in reality, there are many throughout this country, and in fact this world, who behave the same way.

I’m glad I was busy enough to not have the time to invest in what was going on yesterday. Caught snippets here and there, but just not enough time to get fully enveloped in it all. Seems like it was a good thing, as the developments kept changing with each passing hour.

Anyways, hope you all are doing good. Bundle up! Weather report (the real weather, not the jazz group) forecasts freezing overnight, with possible snow tomorrow morning, along with black ice everywhere. People are freaking out here. We’ll see how things play out. Hate to be out and about with people who have little to no experience in these kinds of road conditions. For all of you in such situations throughout this winter season, be careful and be safe!

Only thing I find interesting is the girl friend setup…and that could happen to anyone, anywhere. 😐

  19. Independent Thinker January 17, 2013 8:42 am

The character of each of the posters is evident by how each has commented on the Te’o situation.

One cartoon character in particular comes across as being extremely jealous of anyone who has achieved success without first obtaining his blessing. We all know who this is as he posts the most of all posters, with this fact tending to suggest this blog is his entire life and that he probably does not have a job and lives at home with his parents.

Me, I will wait till all the facts are out before I make a final conclusion. Tuiasosopo should be sought out and interviewed in depth. The truth rests with Tuiasosopo. That is my take on this so far.

Yes, reality shows are scritped. Yes, Catfish is a reality show. But, I hate to burst your bubble too if you think that situations like those portrayed on the show Catfish aren’t real. I am not saying that Manti is clear of wrongdoing or not. But these kinds of things DO happen in todays internet world.

  23. redzone January 17, 2013 8:48 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

To get back to Warrior football, yesterday Kekoa mentioned getting a call from the UH regarding his Na Koa contribution. That entry kind of got lost in the big story of the day.

I also got a call. From Assistant Coach Keith Uperesa no less. He called to thank me for my donation (it was such a small one). I thanked him for all the hard work all the coaches were putting in. He was very cordial. Very impressed with him.

  25. kev-1 January 17, 2013 8:54 am

In the article today about Manti’s draft stock, the NFL scout said that he could not believe how Te’o could be so good all year only to look horrible in the championship game. It was revealed by Notre Dame that Te’o confronted them about the hoax in December. I can only imagine that the burden of this secret was weighing heavily on his mind.

The Notre Dame AD seemed pretty darn convinced based on what evidence that they uncovered through their investigation of the matter that Te’o was the victim. I will waid until those details emerge before deciding how to feel about Te’o. I will not place all of my opinion on a deadspin article.

  31. gobows January 17, 2013 9:04 am

well, when Manti Te’o gets paid in the NFL, he can make it right by donating huge amounts of money to the National Children’s Leukemia Foundation (NCLF), 800givehope, info@leukemiafoundation.org. NCLF is one of the leading non-profit organizations in the battle against leukemia and cancer in children and adults.

he can also do a bone-marrow donor drive, all it takes to register is a cheek swab, no needles, no blood needed.

i give, i’m registered, and my sister is in queens…her body is not producing white blood cells…she has leukemia.

That’s it. I’m taking away my kid’s phones and computers!!

But, seriously, this stuff will blow over. Manti will move on and prepare for the NFL Draft and will probably be financially set for life (if he has a good financial planner).

    exciting times.

i wonder why though, the ncaa does not have an early signing period as does most or all of the sports?

an early signing period that say ends in august, first wednesday, would be great for the recruits who do sign because then they could focus on the season and academics.

    Its UH basketball Thursday!

    From HawaiiAthletics.com

STOCKTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai’i women’s basketball team (7-8, 3-1 Big West) travels to California for a two-game road swing to face Pacific (12-3, 2-1 BWC) and UC Davis (5-9, 0-3 BWC). The ‘Bows will battle UOP—who is undefeated (7-0) at home—first on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 pm in the Alex G. Spanos Center. Hawai’i will then head to UC Davis for a 2:00 pm game on Saturday, Jan. 19.

After dropping their conference opener at Cal State Fullerton, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back with a vengeance to win their last three straight games—including their two-game homestand against UC Irvine and Long Beach State. UH is now tied with Cal Poly for second place in the Big West behind undefeated Cal State Northridge who is now 4-0 in conference action. Hawai’i is a half-game ahead of the Tigers who won their first two games against UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara before falling at Cal Poly in triple overtime, 95-96 this past Saturday.

Junior forward Kamilah Martin is coming off a season-high performance as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 35th of her career in UH’s win over Long Beach State. Martin scored a season-high 27 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds—including a season-high six offensive boards. Overall, Martin continues to lead UH just a shade under a double-double averaging 15.9 points and 9.9 rebounds. She also has a team-high 18 steals and is second on the team with 28 assists. Martin now needs just 34 points to become the 17th Rainbow Wahine to hit the 1,000 point milestone. Her seven defensive rebounds against LBSU tied her with Christen Roper for fourth place in UH history with 498 defensive rebounds and she is also just four rebounds shy of tying Tanya Smith for third place all-time in UH history with 816 total rebounds. She is also just two offensive boards away from tying Smith at 302 for second all-time for UH.

Rookie guard Ashleigh Karaitiana is second on the team with 8.9 points per game is third on the squad with 4.6 rebounds and 10 steals. She and Martin are the only two Rainbow Wahine to start all 15 games thus far this season. In conference action, Shawna-Lei Kuehu has come on strong off the bench to average 9.3 points per game with a team-high four blocked shots and four steals. Kuehu, who missed six games due to a concussion suffered in UH’s opener at San Francisco, is just finding her groove after missing most of last seasons due to personal reasons.

    Pacific Tigers (9-3, 2-1 BWC)

Pacific has come out of the gates strong this season, opening with a seven game win streak before falling to Florida and Stanford in the middle of December. But the Tigers regrouped to string another five straight wins before falling in triple overtime at Cal Poly this past Saturday, 95-96. In the loss, UOP’s starting five all had solid games scoring at least 13 points apiece. Ashley Wakefield led Pacific with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting while Kendall Kenyon had a team-high 12 rebounds.

UOP has a balanced attack with four players averaging over double-digits in points, led by Kendall Rodriguez who is scoring 12.7 points per game. She is solid across the board with 5.6 rebounds, 33 assists, and 21 steals. She leads the Tigers with an .826 free throw percentage (38-of-46) and is second on the team with 26 made 3-pointers. Gena Johnson is second on the team with 12.0 points per outing and has dished out a team-high 52 assists while Kendall Kenyon leads the team with 10.3 rebounds per game and 24 blocked shots. Kenyon is averaging 11.7 points per game.

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men’s basketball team (9-7, 3-2 BWC) returns home for a pair of Big West home games this week, beginning with a contest versus Pacific (9-7, 3-1 BWC) on Thursday, Jan. 17. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m., at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Both teams enter the game with identical overall records. Pacific has won three straight league games, including a pair of emphatic home wins last weekend. The Tigers are in a tie for second in the Big West standings, a half game ahead of the Rainbow Warriors who sit in a three-way tie for fourth place. After starting the season 3-0, the ‘Bows fell from their first-place perch after a pair of tight losses at UC Irvine and Long Beach State in the program’s first-ever Big West road games.

UH’s loss at Long Beach State was particularly agonizing. The team erased a double-digit deficit late in the game and put themselves in position to defeat the defending league champions. Instead, the 49ers won on a shot by Mike Caffey with less than two seconds remaining. Redshirt freshman Brandon Jawato scored a team-high 16 points in the loss and leads the team at 13.8 ppg in Big West contests.

Meanwhile, senior center Vander Joaquim is close to a UH milestone. Joqauim needs just nine points to reach 1,000 career points, a feat accomplished by just 14 other players in program history.

Following its game against Pacific, UH will host UC Davis on Saturday, Jan. 19.

    Series Information: Series tied, 4-4

Almost like a tale of two teams on different sides of the spectrum right now. The Wahine have the momentum in the top half of the Big West while the Rainbow Warriors are looking to get that groove back to keep them in the top half of the Big West. Looks like PG play for both programs are also opposites at this time.

Also, got bad associations on two levels. First, it was my ex ex ex’s song with her ex before me.

Second, that song would be a leading candidate for the title song for the MT/LK movie, dontcha think?

Looking ahead to the warrior 2013 footbal schedule as it applies to the new MWC realignment and its pending revised schedule–it appears Hawaii has 5 interconference games. Traditionally, in a two-division-12 team format, 9 conference games are played, meaning there will be 4 cross-over, inter-division games. Not sure what will develop MWC wise, but USC, Oregon State, BYU, Army and Navy represent a challenging IC schedule.

Hawaii can only honor these games if they are allowed to play 8 MWC games. Another factor will be the date the conference schedules its championship game, which are tradtionally scheduled in the first week of December. That would conflict with the BYU home game…

It is disconcerning to read all these comments and even if getting all the facts before throwing stones, well I tell ya we are all imperfect so whether you have all the facts as you perceived them to be, keep the stones on the ground where they belong. These are the problems when you become a public figure so what ever is the truth it is between Teo and ultimately God. We all make mistakes …everyone ….no one is perfect. Now back to important things great recruiting and Chow and staff are working hard to find the right players. GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  71. Ryan January 17, 2013 11:06 am

From Lennay Kekua’s twitter feed: (http://twitter.com/lennaykay)

“My statement: This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but I have been told by Alabama’s offense that Manti Te’o is not real.”

Seems more likely that this was a hoax that Manti didn’t know about now, no?

  75. Chicken Grease January 17, 2013 11:12 am

You know . . . a Grease praised the press — specifically, the “check and balance function served by a free press — at the end of a Tsai entry the day before yesterday, near the end of posts.

Today . . . a Grease criticizes them. NBC’s Today show, Bobby Curran, a few others, (actually, ESPN, and SA have been hard core objective on this, however) well, they all seem to be looking in the other direction.

But, don’t look now, because . . . unless you’re kidding yourself a la “OJ didn’t do it” (and by the way, there’s no LAPD mishandling in this case) . . . you just can’t look at the guy in the same way anymore.

This is the ONLY local sports story right now.

    Again. Don’t kid yourselves.

  76. WarriorMojo January 17, 2013 11:13 am

I SINCERELY hope that Te’o has a clear explanation for this and that he is cleared of wrong doing in this whole affair, not for his sake, but for the sake of his most loyal supporters. THEY are the ones getting hurt by this. The people who bought into the hype the deepest are now left twisting, trying to balance their faith against the seemingly overwhelming evidence.

If Teo was truly victimized, then he should go public with everything. Every second that goes by without him defending himself causes more and more pain to the people he should care about most. If he’s got evidence to support his claims, bring it! Show the cell phone records of eight hour phone calls. Show the receipt for flower delivery. Show a few photos or copies of text messages. How hard is that?

How can this dude be absent when his friends and family are being called the worst names possible? Liar, scammer, fraud. Isn’t his whole image about caring for friends and family? Well, dude, your friends and family are being slaughtered right now because of YOU. Step up and vindicate yourself. Step up and admit you were involved. Whatever it is, just STEP UP! Good people, innocent people, are being hurt by this, by YOU.

  77. WarriorMojo January 17, 2013 11:15 am

    NFC championship:

If Atlanta goes heavily to a “pass offense”, I fear that the 49ers may have some problems.

This year, like last year, the secondary gives up a lot of yardage for whatever reason. Pass defense seems to be their weakest point. Yet, the DC is mentioned as one of the best in the NFL. To me, this does not jive.

Yet, I like the 49ers to win – my team since the late 40’s.

For the AFC, I like the Ravens – don’t know if they will beat the Patriots, but the 9.5 point spread may give me a winner!!!

Reminds me of small kidz time…..two haole guys in the middle of the street saying “what…what what…what what what…and so forth”

and then one local guy against any other person, “what….cracks” nuf sed

one person knows the truth, and THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE….that’s all i’m going to say.

no need to judge, just move on, and let the truth be told, not too hard. what was mark twain’s quote, something to the effect ‘the more you tell the truth the less you have to remember’ or something like that.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, by the way….. 🙂

Thin skin develops when you obsess and obsess on internet blogs out of the sunlight. It only weakens the epidermis. Very weak people that are shaken by anything that goes against the internet world in which they have built for themselves.

    Check this out…

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/usc-becomes-even-bigger-joke-reports-flat-brawl-212618191–ncaaf.html

That’s the kind of article aimed at getting recruits to de-commit from USC… Chow should see if he can steal a player or two.

  87. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2013 11:44 am

That article was probably leaked by UCLA or Oregon friendly media members.

  88. A-House January 17, 2013 11:47 am

Wow, if Coach Chow goes after certain recruits to Oregon and or USC, will he have enough scholarships to hand out or will he take scholarship(s) away from current players?

  89. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2013 11:52 am

This Te’o situation is just strange. I hope he’s innocent, but deadspin did an impressive amount of investigation and lead following and based on their findings, it appears Te’o had some level of involvement on the hoax. He’s had past tv interviews that contradict his stance as a victim.

To make things more weird, former UH player Reagan Mauia sent a message to ESPN saying that he was friends with “Lennay Kekua” and her family back in Samoa. He said that a few years ago, he lent a shoulder to grieve on because at that time, “Lennay Kekua’s” father had just past away. Mauia said that this took place before Te’o had “met” “Lennay Kekua.”

This might be the strangest thing I’ve seen in sports.

On a positive note, this shouldn’t hurt Te’o’s draft status that much. He’s still an awesome LB and probably a 1st round pick.

  90. Not an Expert January 17, 2013 11:56 am

When Teo mentioned to the media he wanted to win the Heisman for the state of Hawaii, that is when things started to spiral downward. I said to myself when I read that he will not win the Heisman. Call it conspiracy or whatever but there are those who think of Hawaii as another country.

  91. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2013 11:57 am

#89 If Chow can land players that de-commit from Oregon or USC, like any other coach he’ll be glad to make room for them.

I have no idea if Chow could land anyone as a result of the article, but that article is clearly designed to get recruits to second guess their future involvement to USC. That’s one of the dirty sides to recruiting… using the media to bash another program.

  92. papajoe2 January 17, 2013 11:58 am

#58 al, Mauia met her before she met Manti.

  93. BigWave96744 January 17, 2013 12:17 pm

I sent this to the Josh Pacheco Show:

You know how locals send condolence cards to families upon hearing of a death.

Most time when they throw in some “kala” (money) to the grieving family.

There must have been friends and family who sent something small to the Te’o or “Kekua” ohana.

If anyone sent money to the “Kekua” family and not returned, this could be construed as Fraud.

  94. BigWave96744 January 17, 2013 12:18 pm

  98. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2013 12:24 pm

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/17/lennay-kekua-reagan-mauia-manti-teo_n_2492353.html

The biggest loser isn’t Kekua, ND, or Te’o…. the biggest loser is Lance Armstrong… Armstrong is an ego-maniac and the whole Te’o story is taking the limelight away from the Oprah interview as the top news story, which seemed impossible two days ago. His Oprah interview is a calculated move to either repair image, take down others, or its a sick move to get ready for a book deal. I’m sure the spotlight being on Te’o is irking Lance.

  106. BigWave96744 January 17, 2013 12:46 pm

AHouse, A.A., WWE, and Santa Claus are more real that Lennay Kekua 🙂

  107. Old School Dave January 17, 2013 12:51 pm

On a more uplifting note: I just heard that Tiger Woods just proposed to his ex. She is thinking about it, but has demanded a $350 million “Don’t you dare cheat on me again” clause, which Tiger has agreed to.

  108. masteruke January 17, 2013 12:51 pm

as someone wrote before if you go to play for ND, Oregon or whatever you are not playing for Hawaii. You are first playing for yourself and that school you are going too. To try and make yourself look good is BS. And what is a bigger pile of crap is that he is trying to get us to believe his stories filled with inconsistencies. To fall in love with someone you never met, did meet, thought you met is unreal. They better check him for head trauma before

Thanks for the reality check, ST.

I paid the Te’o spin no mind and no clicks.

As for feeling pride/shame about folks from Hawaii… it comes with being ohana. It’s a good thing in moderation and in an environment of loving support and personal humility.

Qualities a lot of communities strive for.

So win or lose… UH Athletics is loved and supported.

    GO, *.Bows!

  113. Kevin January 17, 2013 1:05 pm

Again ST speaks with reason. Hawaii WILL be fine. The spring sports are ready to kick start 2013!!!

A quote from new Nevada head coach, Brian Polian who recruited Manti Teo at ND: “This is not the young man that I know. This is not the family that I know.”

Polian also said he’s not sure Te’o “owes the general public an explanation” on the situation. But said he does owe NFL teams an answer.

Would be nice to be a fly on the wall during those NFL interviews.

  129. Shoko January 17, 2013 4:13 pm

Anyway, not sure this will have a huge impact on his draft stock. If anything, the pyschological effects of this situation might affect his combine numbers. Its the potential endorsements that will be impacted heavily if this isn’t cleared up, tho. Meaning no pictures on Wheaties boxes.

supposedly Manti Te’o received a call from his gf on Dec 6 while at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando. on Dec 8, at the Heisman Trophy presentation in NYC, MT was interviewed by ESPN:

Chris Fowler: There were a lot of cameras around you this year, there was so much public sharing of very private moments, which shared moment will you never forget above the others?

Manti Te’o: I think I’ll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away…

And in other news, UH infuses $1B into the local economy, according to UHERO. UH gets about 22.5% of its funding from the State General Fund. Is that normal for a state university, or is it lower, higher than other schools?

Although one can think of the UHM as if it were one of many businesses or industries in Hawai‘i, an important difference between UHM and most private businesses is that UHM gets a substantial part of its funding from taxpayers. In FY2012, UHM and the supporting RCUH (Research Corporation of the University of Hawai‘i) spent a total of $878 million in support of its education mission; the State General Fund paid $198 million of the total. Adding money spent by the privately funded UH Foundation, spending by students, out-of-town visitor spending related to UHM sponsored professional meetings and conferences brings total UHM-related expenditures to $1.40 billion in FY2012, 90% of which was spent locally.

Overall, the $1.40 billion of education-related expenditures attributable to UHM generated $2.45 billion in local business sales, $735 million in employee earnings, $131 million in state tax revenues, and slightly under 20,000 jobs in Hawai‘i in FY2012. This represented approximately 3.4% of total jobs, 2.5% of worker earnings, and 2.2% of total state tax revenues.

    Jumping the gun people.

Just considering that school at this stage. Its one of 5 offers at the moment.

Rest assured when anything is confirmed I will post it here, but that will be after visits next week.

  152. laulau head January 17, 2013 7:48 pm

According to a comment on HawaiiFootball . Net FB page, Georgia Tech is one of five schools that Blake Muir is considering…hasn’t commited yet.

  153. Kevin January 17, 2013 7:54 pm

Just simply chicken skin seeing a decent sized student section all wearing matching shirts in alternating OFFICIAL AND TRADITIONAL UH SCHOOL COLORS GREEN AND WHITE.

Great job by all that organized it!!!

  154. gobows January 17, 2013 7:55 pm

Vander Joaquim scores his 1001st point in his UH career…

  155. Kevin January 17, 2013 7:56 pm

    Another more newsworthy UH-related piece:

Big man #15 Vander Joaquim becomes the 15th player in UH history to score 1,000 career points!

    GO BOWS!!!

  156. Chicken Grease January 17, 2013 8:02 pm

  164. papajoe2 January 17, 2013 8:44 pm

Congrats to Vander on scoring 1,000+ career points.

Shot blocking down for him. Seems to have his hands by his knees on defense instead of by his shoulders. By the time he swats at the ball, a little too slow. Big men always should have their hands up and let the forwards and guards worry about the dribbler, etc..

  165. kev-1 January 17, 2013 8:46 pm

Congrats to the bball Warriors. Good win, but what’s with all the turnovers this year? We have to be on pace for some kind of record.

Sorry to hear about the Wahine loss. Still like the direction that team is moving in. They will bounce back.

  166. Kevin January 17, 2013 8:55 pm

Great imagery of the team going over to a great student section showing tonight to thank them for showing up.

Great coordination with the alternating green and white matching shirts!

  167. Kevin January 17, 2013 8:57 pm

Rainbow Wahine should bounce back. Coach Beeman has done a good job with making corrections this season. Kuehu had a great statistical night I believe.

  168. kapakahi January 17, 2013 8:57 pm

    #153,

Will definitely be on scholarship…..thanks to actual live game action film footage from starting and playing in 12 games was available for these 5 potential suitors to evaluate…..whereas there was none at the beginning of last season.

This video…..on fellow Aussie mate Adam Gotsis……who UH had the initial recruiting shot at last year but decided to pass……pretty much explains the Aussie / Georgia Tech connection.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl8EaI9D8Fw

  169. Kevin January 17, 2013 8:58 pm

As for those UA cammo softball jersey’s for Military Appreciation Night, they in fact will not “replace” the traditional “Power in Pink” game for breast cancer awareness, that will still take place as usual.

  170. kapakahi January 17, 2013 9:06 pm

    #172,

Care to guess who helped trained Adam back in Australia before getting to Georgia Tech last season (on scholarship)?

    Hmmm……

  171. cocobean January 17, 2013 9:40 pm

Good crowd tonight. Only Midnight Madness attracted more students who are the missing element for a true home court advantage. Hope they show up for the rest of the games.

Turnovers. Gib is still holding open auditions for point guard. Until he settles on one guy it’s going be hard for the team to settle in a rhythm. The offense is out of sync all too often.

Caught the 1st half of the Wahine game online thought they had a chance to comeback in the 2nd. Judging by the final score points for both teams must have been hard to come by in the 2nd.

  172. jeezy33 January 17, 2013 9:41 pm

    174. U seem to have the connections with the UH coaches. Need to get them to check out Neil Lomax kid, Mitch Lomax. Kid is already developed physically at 6-4 240. He already looks more athletic and bigger than any of our current TEs. Not exactly sold on our depth at that spot yet.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/470218/highlights/17341380

  173. kapakahi January 17, 2013 9:50 pm

    #177,

My connection used to be some of the past recent assistant coaches…..but now just the players, friends, and family…..and the local HS coaches.

You’ve already demonstrated that you definitely have the better “connections” with the UH coaches.

  174. kapakahi January 17, 2013 9:54 pm

    #177,

Still somewhat disturbed about current UH coaches dropping the ball on Hala’api’api last year…..despite inside efforts to assist. Might wanna ask LGW about that one.

  175. gobows January 17, 2013 9:55 pm

  180. Kevin January 17, 2013 11:28 pm

    3-Prong,

Yup, at the end of the day, literally, the best and only real newsworthy news for UH fans is Vander’s milestone and a great showing by the students!!!

    GO BOWS!!!

  181. Kevin January 17, 2013 11:32 pm

Wahine get help? Someone doesnt obviously have an attention span to UH’s female student-athletes and the progression of their programs and has never paid attention to this year’s team under Coach Beeman.

Not surprising, one ignorant comment made following another previously about how the ICON Dave Shoji should be taking notes from Gib Arnold.

    Onto the weekend!

  182. SteveM January 18, 2013 12:37 am

    187

Kevin — CG said the Wahine should get hep. I thought it said “help” at first glance, but hep is a slang from the 1960’s (could be 50’s) I guess. It also means get “hip” or fashionable/in it.

I’m not sure of the time frame, but we used “hip” and “hep” in high school. Maybe Al can tell more, because he was always more “hep” than me…. 🙄

    g’nite everyone!

  183. PowderPuff January 18, 2013 2:37 am

NICE win by the ‘Bows tonight, but yes….gotta cut down on those turnovers. Yikes!

Thank you, Tsaikos, who have joined Nā Koa. It is a nice touch to get a personal phone call from the student athletes/coaches too. Anyone would like to go to the National Letter of Intent Day Reception at Willows on Wednesday, February 6? Let Stretch or me know: http://nakoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/2013-Letter-of-Intent_Oahu_FINAL.pdf

At this point, I’m starting to feel sorry for Manti. I may be old-fashioned and/or cautious, but I think the damage to his reputation is approaching irreparable. The Te’o family has received some AWFUL public relations guidance and it’s costing them way more than money.

  184. PowderPuff January 18, 2013 2:41 am

And is it true about Tiger proposing to Elin? WOW! That is GREAT….hope he starts playing better too. He just missed the cut in Abu Dhabi.

  187. WarriorMojo January 18, 2013 3:12 am

This post is about the Teo situation so please stop reading if that subject makes your panties bunch up. You should probably also avoid ESPN, SI, CNN, Twitter, Facebook, ANY newspaper, ANY news broadcast, and ANY human interaction whatsoever for the next couple weeks since the rest of the country cares even if you don’t.

Anyway, not much happening with Te’o today since he foolishly remains silent. Do his handlers think this is going to blow over, that people will simply forget? Not a chance in hell. The longer he waits, the worse it will be since he’ll also have to explain why it took so LONG for him to speak up. Unless, of course, Manti plans NEVER to speak to the media again. Yeah, right. But the situation is going from horrible to worse, to wit:

As reported in the SA, Teo invoked his dead girlfriend to the media on at least two separate occasions AFTER he supposedly found out it was a hoax. How can that mean anything, except that he was in on this? Manti will now also have to explain his timeline for events since ND’s timeline makes him look bad.

Manti’s uncle in Utah gave an interview in which he insinuates that Tuiasosopo is to blame for the hoax. The dynamic involved in that part of the story is FASCINATING. Seems pretty clear that Tuiasosopo was indeed heavily-involved so logically Te’o should step up and let fly.

The problem, though, is that Tuiasosopo ain’t gonna be the fall guy. If Manti comes after him, he likely will return fire with everything he has. What that might be, I don’t know, but I’m guessing that issue is what is preventing Manti from coming forward. Does he speak up and toss Tuiasosopo under the bus at the risk of being dragged down himsef? Of course IF Manti was completely victimized by Tuiasosopo, then there should be nothing to fear.

Tuiasosopo is apparently no stranger to the tragic-car-accidents-for-sympathy thing. It was revealed that he tried out for The Voice, telling producers that:

“he and his cousins started a Christian band together and were on their way to perform at a youth conference in Nevada when they got into a “massive” car accident. He claimed a truck crashed into their vehicle, sending them flip-flopping all over the freeway. He also said doctors thought one of them might have been brain-dead, but miraculously, everyone was fine.”

Tuiasosopo’s dad was also in the news yesterday, basically defending his son: “I know so much has been splattered all over the media about my son & my family. I also know that many who were born in a manger in Bethlehem & continue to walk on water will undoubtedly express their opinions. Those of you who know us the best still love us the most. It my hope & prayer that we allow the truth to take its course, wherever that may lead. My heart goes out to Manti & the Te’o Aiga. Please allow this young man to pursue his dream without judgement. He’s an amazing role model for our youth and Samoan community.”

How’s that for humility? Guess I know where the son gets his arrogance, but I can’t help but think that this is a bit of a warning shot to the Teos as well.

Finally, Reagan Mauia clarified that Troy Polamalu wants no part of this mess. Unlike Reagan, Troy apparently has no memories of meeting someone who never existed, in Samoa or anywhere else.

My goodness, what news to come?

Some dig just a shallow hole.

    Some dig a lot deeper.

    Some never figure it out.

I think this is the latest I ever seen WM post. Braddah is working overtime! Nonetheless, always find it interesting to read other’s perspective on this Teo situation. I’m sure there will be more to come.

Congrats to Vander for reaching 1000 points.

If Pacific wasn’t shooting like crap, it might have been another heart wrenching loss. Those turnovers are just making too easy for oppoenents to comeback and steal a victory. Pound for pound, UH is the better team in the Big West and should 6-0 in conference play, but when you’re leading the conference in turnovers (281), thats very telling of why they’re 4-2.
