Warriors land WR

Keith Kirkwood, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver from Neptune High in New Jersey, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.

Kirkwood was a star basketball player before deciding to play football during his senior season in 2012.

He averaged more than 22 yards per catch.

When we first read this, we were bowled over:

Deadspin article.

The relationship between UH and Kahuku began with the McMackin administration and has strengthened under Chow’s leadership, Red Raider coach Reggie Torres said.

Torres acknowledged the link is UH linebacker coach Tony Tuioti, who is the lone holdover from the McMackin’s coaching staff. Tuioti, who lives and attends church on the North Shore, is UH’s point recruiter at Kahuku.

“Coach Tony has done a great job as far as keeping in touch with the kids and talking with their counselors to make sure they have the grades to play college football,” Torres said.

The Warriors have received commitments for two Kahuku players and are finalists for a third. The UH coaches visited Kahuku yesterday as part of their island recruiting tour.

It should be interesting to see how far the ripples extend from Chip Kelly’s hiring with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Oregon has been the dominant team in the West the past few years. As such, the Ducks have had an impact in recruiting battles in on the West Coast and in Hawaii and American Samoa.

Does this mean the Eagles will now have 8,232,541 uniform combinations?

not too many coaches that take over for a very successful coach in the same program, is as successful.

  8. PONO January 16, 2013 7:47 am

Tuioti plays a huge role in keeping the Kahuku pipeline open. Seeing him in the community and attending community events is huge in building relationships for the long haul.

  9. Shoko January 16, 2013 7:47 am

Good idea to hire from within. There will be little player turnover vs someone who is an enternal hire.

If Hawaii can land Masters or Barker. This offense can take off…. I wan’t both but getting 1 would be fantastic.

ST, is Billy Vaughn Jr solid on SDSU?

  13. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2013 7:56 am

A guy buys a car for $2,000. He spends $1,000 to fix it. He now says the car is worth $3,000.

I think the car is still worth $2,000. I think the $1,000 in repairs were used to maintain a $2,000 car. Now if a $1,000 sound system was added, then the value of the car improves.

    Which brings us to UH.

I think all of the improvements in facilities are maintaining UH’s level. UH needs to add a metaphorical sound system.

It appears the mandate to Ben Jay is to balance the budget.

Now when your wife talks about “balancing the budget,” that means you’re going to lose some cable channels.

I think the mandate to Jay should be to do well enough to add to the budget.

In January 2010, while Gov. Lingle negotiated 6-8% pay cuts with other unions, she negotiated “temporary pay cuts” with the UH faculty union (UHPA) that would be returned by the end of the contract. She also agreed to give them 3% pay raises in 2013 and 2014. This generosity was not extended to other public employees. See http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2010/Jan/17/ln/hawaii1170369.html. At that time, I was told the UH budget, not the state’s general fund, would fund the restoration. If true, it adds to why we’ve seen increases in tuition, athletic fees and other student and user fees to increase UH revenues.

  41. jiminy cricket January 16, 2013 9:15 am

Unfair to ask Jay to balance the budget. I think only a handful of Div. I schools have balanced athletic budgets; super majority of them get subsidized by the University general fund or legislature. Virtually impossible to balance budget bc too many sports are non revenue producing but are nontheless required bc of Title !X or bc the NcAA requires a minimum number of sports to be considered Div. I.

The best way to balance the budget is to cut the salaries of UH administrators throughout the system and use the savings to fund the athletic budget. The athletic budget is on such a shoe string right now. The biggest scam in University finances is how much money administrators make. I believe there are more than two dozen administrators making more than $200K per year. These people could not make this kind of money in the private sector. For example, the general counsel at UH has 8 lawyers on staff and makes more than $250K per year. The Attorney General has over 100 lawyers on staff and makes far less than the UH general counsel. This is same for State administrators who oversee far more employees and budgets than their UH counterparts. they recently hired a PR person for one department and paid them $150K a year. Something is seriously wrong here. Taxpayers are unknowingly being soaked.

Yet, tuition continues to go up, freshmen cannot get the first year classes bc there are not enough courses being taught by professors or there are not enough teaching professors, UH students have to spend an extra year of tuition (5th year) bc they couldn’t get their classes in the first year, and it goes on and on.

And the administrators are not even competent to throw a concert.

The higher education system in the US is seriously broken. A very disturbing report came out recently that for the first time, higher education does not give an opportunity for poor people to move up in life. Tkhis is bc higher education is so expensive, that poorer people cannot afford the tuition and end up dropping out of college. Yet college administrators continue to pad their wallets.

Steven Tsai, we need you and your cohorts at the paper to do an investigative report on this. The athletic budget can be balanced if administrative salaries are cut.

  47. Shoko January 16, 2013 9:34 am

The question about exit fees is whether SDSU still owes the BW exit fee of 1.5 million, whether the MW will help in paying some of that off.

  48. SteveM January 16, 2013 9:37 am

    Good morning everyone!

Happy Belated Birthday to Queen Faye !!!

  49. John Fitzgerald Byers January 16, 2013 9:39 am

A fine conspiracy theory could be that they brought in someone like Jay to uncover the financial facts of running a d1 program and having it be solvent. Someone with jay’s resume cannot be refuted. The fact that UH cannot cut sports without the risk of losing federal funding thru title 9 combined with the ncaa requirement to have a certain number of sports to stay d1 is the weapons upper campus needs to axe the whole uh athletic department.

  50. Shoko January 16, 2013 9:39 am

Another issue the MW will have to deal with is the basketball schedule format as the schedule only has 11 teams.

    Add Hawaii MBB?

  51. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2013 9:40 am

That’s probably one of he main reasons Chow retained Tuioti as an assistant. It’s important for UH to have a link to Kahuku to help fend off BYU from taking most of the good LDS players in the Kahuku school district.

UH will forever be financially strapped because of the conference it aligns with. It’s all about TV money when it comes to football and budgets. The big conferences all have multi-billion dollar contracts… Just one example is the Pac 12’s new TV deal that guarantees every member $20+million every year for 12+years (before bowl TV revenue). Washington St, a struggling program right now, just spent $60 million on stadium and facility upgrades and still had the cheese to hire Leach for $2+million per year. Add in a much larger booster club money than UH could ever dream of and voila, athletics are financially healthy.

For whatever reason, UH just doesn’t produce a ton rich people to give back to the university or athletic programs. Maybe its the rich alumni that don’t care about sports.

Title IX, as important as it is symbolically, is horrible for college athletic budgets. The only schools that thrive from Title IX are schools with powerful women’s basketball programs. UH is lucky to have a very good women’s volleyball program that easily draws the biggest attendance in the nation.

  52. Shoko January 16, 2013 9:42 am

It was also mentioned that teams that play at Hawaii would be allowed to schedule a 13th regular-season game. Not sure if any member would want to take advantage of that exemption.

  53. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2013 9:46 am

    Shoko, thanks for the article…

SDSU back into the Mtn West makes the most sense. The Mtn West will be the best non-BCS conference next year with Boise and SDSU back. It makes it tougher for UH, but better competition will only help the team get better.

BTW… Be sure to watch UNLV vs SDSU basketball today/tonight. Might be the best game in the west coast all year.

That is a ridiculous idea. UH should cut administrative costs so that tuition doesn’t have to go up, not to fund athletics.

  63. SteveM January 16, 2013 9:57 am

    #47

Shoko — the MWC helping with SDSU’s penalties from the Big East sure sounds hapless to me.

Having SDSU back means that every other year (hopefully) brings a lot of Tsai-ko game & cruise possibilities from Garret’s backyard and hawnstln’s favorite port…especially if the games are scheduled in October or later.

  64. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2013 9:58 am

Shoko, I would like to see UH in the Mtn West for BB because I think UH deserves to play in big venues vs the oversized HS gyms in the Big West. It’s the travel expenses that make it tough. The BW is so convenient and the program saves probably close to 6-digits by only needing to fly to LAX.

Being in the Mtn West would probably boost attendance because there are so many good teams, but UH’s would probably only be middle of the pack and UH fans are the most fickle I’ve ever seen having seen games in about a dozen different college venues. UH fans have a hard time showing up when times are good and completely abandon ship when times are down.

USC has the most fair weather fans, but at least they fill the stadium when the team is good. I can’t remember the exact number, but I think Aloha stadium only had 2 sellouts during the Colt Brennan era. That’s a shame considering 2006 & 2007 was the highest the program had ever been. I believe the only sellouts were vs Boise and Washington to end the 2007 season. For the majority of the Brennan era, Aloha Stadium was only about 70% full. Tickets sold were higher but actual bodies in the seats wasn’t that good.

  65. Shoko January 16, 2013 10:05 am

    63. SDSU doesn’t have to pay the exit fee ($5 million) per agreement with the Big East. Its the Big West, where they house their other sports, is where the question arises if they still need to pay their exit fee. Not sure if the Big West package agreement was like the Big East. However, 1.5 million seems like a pittance to pay to leave the Big West.

  66. kev-1 January 16, 2013 10:06 am

Maybe Aloha Stadium is too big. I don’t know this, but I am curious about other MWC stadium capacities and average attendance. A sell out at Aloha Stadium is a lot of people for a college game, right? I mean, not talking about the Alabama size stadiums.

  67. al January 16, 2013 10:06 am

having mbb join the mwc is probably on ben jay’s things to do list. even if that does not lend towards balancing the budget.

would the bw allow us to move mbb only while keeping the rest of the sports on the west coast?

  68. kev-1 January 16, 2013 10:06 am

sorry, my previous is related to #64

  69. al January 16, 2013 10:08 am

so the sdsu is to pay millions to stay put.

wow, worst than the wonder blunder…

  70. Shoko January 16, 2013 10:09 am

    64. It’s the TV revenue that the MW basketball schools make and the increased attendence for home games that should interest UH. I think SDSU, NM, UNLV would be huge draws for home games.

  71. Shoko January 16, 2013 10:17 am

    67. Whether the BW allows to let UH’s MBB leave and other sports stay is something I didn’t think about. That complicates things even more.

  74. Bigislandkurt January 16, 2013 10:51 am

My Prediction: One day, Tony Tuioti will be head coach of the University of Hawaii Warriors. Once he gets some coordinator experience under his belt, he will be a candidate. He is an intelligent coach and the players love him. The Tuioti Effect is REAL.

    BIK

  75. papajoe2 January 16, 2013 10:51 am

#64, during Colt’s years, although Hawaii was doing great, we had ppv. That takes away a lot of fans, older, handicapped, and what not, but puts income in the UH budget.

I don’t like UH’s basketball teams in the MWC. I will cost us more to go there and longer (jet lag factor is even greater). More to pay for them to get here to play us. Harder to win the championship to get to the NCAA tournament. Inconvienent for Hawaii fans to attend, whereas, Hawaii has more fans in California to go to the games and also easier for Hawaii residents to attend games on their way to other destinations.

  76. whitey January 16, 2013 10:59 am

ironic, UH try to balance your budget, Federal raise the debt ceiling. UH no raise the tuition, Federal raise the income taxes. UH try ask the private sector for help, Federal print more money.

  77. Kapolei Warrior January 16, 2013 11:04 am

I remember reading that UH would not have to pay travel subsidies to teams joining the conference after we did. So my question is will we still have to pay for Boise’s and SDSU’s travel when they come here?

  79. HawaiiMongoose January 16, 2013 11:13 am

Glad to have SDSU coming back to the MWC. The conference will be in good shape for football, with lots of solid programs and traditional rivalries. Also there should be stability since the Pac-12 doesn’t seem interested in adding any MWC member.

I could be wrong but I don’t see the MWC asking UH to join for non-football sports. They don’t want the travel even if we pay subsidies, and scheduling for an odd number in basketball isn’t really that big of a deal. Instead of going to divisions they can just play some kind of round-robin like a lot of other conferences do. Remember that when SDSU and Boise State were slated to join the Big West, the plan was to play a 14 or 16 game schedule with 11 members using some kind of modified round-robin. And the ACC will be scheduling for 15 members when Notre Dame joins the conference for non-football sports.

  80. HawaiiMongoose January 16, 2013 11:16 am

Re #77, Kapolei Warrior, that applied for the Big West, not the MWC. It’s already been confirmed by the MWC commissioner that UH will be paying travel subsidies to Boise State and SDSU when they send their football teams to Hawaii.

  81. A-House January 16, 2013 11:21 am

    #77:

your statement holds true only the Big West.

Commish Thompson has already made it clear that UH will have to pay for Boise and SDSU football teams to play in Hawaii – I strongly beleive that this is blantant discremination against UH – he is using this because he knows that he has UH by the alas!!!!!!!!!!!!!

someone previously posted that this was wrong after BSU decided to move back to the MWC

funny how things are digressing back to 1979 when UH joined the WAC and had to agree to pay for football teams to travel to Hawaii

unless many UH supporters and Hawaii residents step up with $$$, Hawaii will NEVER be a consistent major D1 contender in football – ever notice how UH fared after the 1992 Holiday Bowl victory and 2007 football season? it was all down hill, baby!!!!!!!!!

and, having MRC as UH President will be a complete LIABILITY!!!!!!!!!!! Apple is no better by holding on to her pocket.

  82. Shoko January 16, 2013 11:27 am

stay tuned, this is going to fun.

  84. HawaiiMongoose January 16, 2013 11:31 am

As a Moanalua grad it was interesting to read Dave’s column this morning on the UH mascot. The menehune lore is a great basis for inspiring athletic achievement. But even if we’re just talking about the costumed student who leads fan cheers at games and not the official name of UH athletic teams, I think it’s better to reserve menehune for use at the high school rather than the collegiate level. When mainland TV audiences see a “not tall but buff” UH student in a menehune costume and mainland announcers try to explain what he’s portraying and inevitably butcher the name, it will just create confusion and some amount of ridicule.

On the subject of UH team names, I think the best compromise may be to designate Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine as the official mascots for the men and women respectively, with Warriors and Wahine used as informal shorthand references.

That approach would be similar to what is done at schools like Notre Dame, Cal, Marshall and LSU. Their official mascots are the Fighting Irish, Golden Bears, Thundering Herd and Bengal Tigers, but they’re informally referred to as the Irish, the Bears, the Herd and the Tigers.

The key change from today would be that “Rainbow” would serve only as an adjective, not a noun, so that informal references to UH teams as the “Rainbows” would no longer be technically correct (any more than it would be correct to call a Cal team the “Goldens”). But this approach would still give deference and respect to the historical importance of the “Rainbow” moniker.

Was that a rehab meeting, kev-1? Bwahahhaahhaaahha, just joking, just joking. Don’t be late! 🙂

A # of instances of the word “power” in today’s blog responses:

    • Mr. Tsai’s # 10

    • SPAMMIE rose gold ring # 29

    • your own mention, # 45, kev-1

    • FUHA’s # 51

Well. If, in fact, a Grease’s sleeps are, in fact, “power naps,” that would make sense, as a Grease’s muscles are real nice. [a Grease flexes, kisses biceps, smiles.]

A Grease has heard of the expression “power bottom(s).” Dunno the heck THAT’s about.

Well. It probably doesn’t have to do with the result of the recent Heisman and National Championship wins, oh!!!! Two buddhists walk into a bar . . .

  96. jimmy the lock January 16, 2013 12:05 pm

Manti a victim? Try wait, try wait, you mean he never met the girl? I should read the story…

  97. WarriorMojo January 16, 2013 12:07 pm

    Wow what a publicity stunt.

  99. redzone January 16, 2013 12:13 pm

  100. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 12:17 pm

Holy moly. Is a Grease READING these accounts, right?

How’s about this . . . if he didn’t KNOW who she was, why didn’t he deny it before ND fans wore leis to the ND stadium?!?!

A Grease’ll be open-minded — as he usually is — about this . . . but, that question remains: everyone know of the “GF” . . . that was when Te’o could’ve denied? No?

    Just asking. Stay tuned.

Always reassuring to know the advertiser relies on reliable sources for news it reprints. I mean, gosh, afterall, deadspin, “an entertainment website”, after all, is a truly reliable source, like wikipedia and youtube. They subscribe to the AP stylebook and the AP rules when it comes to reporting.

Good job, advertiser, on reprinting this unverified story from an unscrupulous source.

So his dad was in on it as well?

  113. Independent Thinker January 16, 2013 12:38 pm

ESPN is a somewhat reliable source, so I accept as true: (1) Teo and GF had an online relationship initiated by Tuiasosopo; (2) he spoke with her only on the phone and on the internet, never actually meeting her in person; and, (3) he learned from someone, probably Tuiasosopo (who is responsible for the entire hoax), that his GF, who he met online, died.

Shows that Teo was human, immature, and silly to believe he had a GF from merely speaking to someone on the phone and on the internet, but it does not show he perpetrated a lie.

Shows that Tuiasosopo is probably the female he was speaking to the entire time and that Tuiasosopo should be punished.

Next issue, find Tuiasosopo and make her fess up for her dastardly deeds.

Te’o, Uce, next time, meet girls in person, Uce. Then make a decision about whether or not to call her your GF.

  114. jimmy the lock January 16, 2013 12:38 pm

    Yikes… I’m at a loss for words… This is crazy…

  117. Roll Tide January 16, 2013 12:40 pm

#115 Did they meet on Match.com?

  118. jeezy33 January 16, 2013 12:42 pm

Manti had to be a part of this. Who was this so called girl he had talked to every night on the phone till he fell asleep? You are telling me since 2009, you aren’t going to find a way to meet up with a person you love?

And to end it, why would Manti need to go on twitter to find a gf when he can get any girl he wanted to on campus?

  119. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 12:43 pm

THE BIGGEST QUESTION: the Te’os must’ve known about “GF”, along with the rest of us. Why didn’t they deny?

ANOTHER QUESTION: Could THIS be why B. Te’o got all up in arms over — essentially — NOTHING? Cause some kind of misdirection? Hoped his stink about SA’s photos would saturate all things Te’o coverage?

    Stay. TUNED!

  120. jimmy the lock January 16, 2013 12:44 pm

    As for #113, #116

There are some people on here who have shown themselves to be incapable of self restraint (name calling instead of arguing the issues) or intelligent conversation (hiding behind sarcasm masked as wit), and to these people I never reply.

It’s a sad day for this fine young man and athlete, but I am of the conclusion Tuiasosopo is the bad guy here. This conclusion I get from reading the ESPN story.

  123. jeezy33 January 16, 2013 12:46 pm

    122. Exactly… So he couldn’t have sounded like a female on the phone if they talked on the phone every night. also phone records would trace this person if someone really hoaxed him.

  135. Shoko January 16, 2013 12:59 pm

Well, lets look on the brightside of this so-called hoax. Lennay Kekua didn’t die. She just never existed. I would think finding out that someone didn’t die would be bring a sigh of relief.

Nevermind. Hope Teo’s agent is good at damage control.

  136. WarriorMojo January 16, 2013 1:05 pm

My goodness, Twitter is blowing up over this. A Grease is correct. There is no spinning this.

  141. Shoko January 16, 2013 1:19 pm

Yep, so much for potential endorsements.

Made a comment about problems of scheduling in 11-team conference and just realized it didn’t post. Oh well, too lazy to re-type.

Basically, playing a home-and-home series with every team in the conference would too much. And with an uneven number of teams, you can’t play a division team twice and the other division teams once as that would would lead to an unequal number of conference games per team.

  142. jimmy the lock January 16, 2013 1:20 pm

Just to be fair, someone should check if Katherine Webb is really the Alabama QB’s girlfriend and not a publicity stunt to get a Hollywood gig.

  143. Shoko January 16, 2013 1:22 pm

I still hope that UH MBB somehow gets into the MW. Better exposure which leads to better recruiting. Not too mention the basketball credits the conference generates and the stronger conference RPI.

  144. Independent Thinker January 16, 2013 1:23 pm

The guy is a Mormon. He is supposed to abstain. Makes sense it was only platonic, on the phone, and on the internet.

We all like a good train wreck, don’t we, so-called regulars.

  153. Shoko January 16, 2013 1:51 pm

  154. Manoa Mist January 16, 2013 1:53 pm

Just wanted to apologize to Kekoa, I think Chicken Grease and a couple other posters who were questioning the integrity of Mr. Manti Te’o a couple months back. Sheesh.

    Sorry guys.

  155. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 1:54 pm

Before all the websites that exists for “hooking people up,” my geeky friend had conversations with a girl from Singapore online for a year on a forum which he like to debate others on things like religion and politics. They became a couple and a year later they met each other for the first time. They have been married now for nearly 10. They also have children too. Back then I thought it was crazy and should be the exception and not the norm. Today, you have so many sites that exists for people to find their “soul” mate. Since then, I have known several couples married and they attribute it to these sites. I wouldn’t be too hard on Manti. Hope he keeps his head in all that has been swirling around him.

This cruel, sad hoax has damaged a man we all come to Love. Manti was the most trusting, loving man. No more, I doubt he will trust anyone like he use to. These cruel perpetrators of this hoax have no soul, no integrity. To do this to a kind, trusting man is unconscionable. Makes you lose faith in mankind.

    185. Your comment reminds me of defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo and how he struggled being a closet homosexual during his career in the NFL. How he was tight-lipped about his sexuality and afraid to come out of the closet for fear of retaliation. I think the NFL still has a Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell policy.

  193. redzone January 16, 2013 3:22 pm

Notre Dame AD press conference was on TV. He said Manti was a victim and that Teo will tell his story soon. Maybe tomorrow. AD actually cried and said that Manti was a very trusting person. They had a private investigation but ND will not be giving out the findings. AD said everything was given to the Teo family and it was up to them as to how they go foward with this matter. I took this to mean that all info will come thru and from the Teos.

Need to separate Manti from the father.

The father was probably telling things to the newspapers on his own that Manti may not have known. Need to investigate the father if want to find the whole truth. Now it may be getting clearer why father asked for boycott of Star Advertiser. He might have been living in a fantasyland.

All speculation right now. The family needs to come clean.

    This is so weird.

    Wow.

    latest update from espn.com

Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011. “This was before her and Manti,” Mauia said Wednesday evening. “I don’t think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was — I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa.” Mauia said Tuiasosopo — whom Mauia believes is Kekua’s cousin — introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an “after-party” for all of the athletes involved in the camp. “She was tall,” he said. “Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model … ” He said it is his understanding that Kekua’s mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he’d never met her mother. When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said “No, she is real.

    #115, (2) . . .

    Nope. Incorrect.

He did, apparently, meet her several times in Hawai’i, “. . . Te’o’s father, Brian, told the Tribune in October 2012. ‘Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there.'”

    Pau.

I hope he can overcome this event — self inflicted or not.

“Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there.” (South Bend Tribune)

Te’o talks to Lennay nightly, “going to sleep while on the phone with her,” according to Sports Illustrated.

Manti was the victim? Gimme a break. How about all the people in Hawaii, at South Bend, & across the nation who supported, adored, & believed in Manti?

Manti & Daddy Teo’s integrity just went down the tubes with many, many people. So sad, so embarrassing . . .

    From hawaiiathletics.com:

Kory Sasaoka, a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering, is the December winner of the Student Rewards Program, which awards a prize to the University of Hawai`i at Manoa student who attends the most UH sporting events during a given month.

Sasaoka attended a student-best five UH sporting events in December and will receive two (2) tickets to the Pro Bowl, two (2) tickets to the Official NFL Saturday Night Party at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and a Pro Bowl jacket and gift bag, compliments of Verizon, a UH Corporate Partner. Other UH Corporate Partners have also provided prizes for future Student Rewards winners.

“I am very honored to be awarded these prizes,” Sasaoka said. “I think the Student Rewards Program is a great way to encourage the students to come out to the games and show their school spirit. It’s awesome how students get into all the sports events just by showing their UH I.D. and are given the opportunity to win great prizes throughout the game, during the timeouts, and at halftime. The Student Rewards Program is icing on the cake. I want to give a shout-out to the UH Corporate Partners for donating great prizes for the students.”

Temidayo “Temmy” Alamurin, a graduate student in the College of Education, won the inaugural Student Rewards prize for the month of November and received an iPad, compliments of Pepsi. Click here to view the story.

Winners will also be selected for January, February, March, and April. Students scan their UH Manoa identification cards each time they enter a UH ticketed sporting event and the winners are determined by a check of the student database by the UH ticket office at the end of each month. Ticketed UH sports include: football, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, and baseball.

For real, I swear on the graves of my grandparents who helped raise me from small kid time, that I have NEVER watched a BSCS “Championship” game ever.. I can’t even stand watching a full quarter of any other bowl game UH is in. All other bowls like the Sugar, Rose, etc… all fabrications of grandure and other bowls are really pushing the limits of necessity.

The so-called BCS bowls are nothing more than a perfect image of what is horribly wrong with big money PROFESSIONAL collegiate athletics schemed to fool wannabe believers into thinking the mission of the NCAA is carried out as they claim it to be.

College football has and will always END whenever UH football is pau as far as I am concerned. No need for the foo foo fluff afterwards. 😆

Here’s something USEFUL to read about:

Apparently the NCAA doesnt have exact regulations in place on how instiutions and athletic departments monitor social media from their student-athletes. Of course this doesnt mean there aren’t people monitoring at all, just means apparently there are no set specific guidelines.

This comes from a tweet from Division I SAAC attending a session on Social Media and Athletes.

Does anyone remember (or even care) about Jacintha Saldanha?

Mrs. Saldanha was a nurse who fell for some hoax. Some people thought it would be funny to pretend that they were the in-laws of the Dutchess of Cambridge – you know the in-laws, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip – to inquire about their daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton.

When she gave the information and put the call through, and later found out that it was a hoax, she couldn’t take the disgrace – or the fall from grace – and killed herself, feeling her reputation was totally ruined.

    I feel for Manti Te’o.

And the person(s) that created this hoax are the ones to be condemned.

I can’t read this anymore. My internet wife who my dad says we met before but now he says we didn’t divorced me. She was the love of my life. I will now go play with my imaginary dog and wait for the NFL draft where a certain guy will fall to the 2nd or 3rd round.

Sad the family, the school hid this for any amount of time. They new the story made him a national love. Too bad it was as fake as the girl friend. Alabama exposed him. The combine will do more of the same. This perfect image was going to gain him draft spots over many, many guys. Now, he will be a guy that has question marks.

So, you mean to tell me a kid like him doesn’t have SKYPE? He fell in love with a picture?

Who does that? Are we sure he wasn’t just making up a girlfriend because he doesn’t like girls? Not that anything is wrong with that..but come on…

BTW…the father was mad about the paper. Did you see the SI magazine? He is gettting run over in the endzone by Lacy/.

Local parents should tell their kids to stay home. Go to UH. If you are good you will make the pro’s. The spotlight, the school….Something forced this situation to be hidden for the good of things that mean little in life.

Go Warriors. I hope Isaac is reading this and decides to stay home.

Head Coach Norm Chow and his staff will discuss the Warriors’ 2013 recruit class on signing day. Cost is $2,500 per table with proceeds going directly to Warrior Football through Na Koa.

tom mui . . . really enjoy your posts, but . . . you gotta boil this situation down; the boiling is very EASY in this case (easy for everybody; not saying you need things easy, tom mui). Everyone, EVERYONE understood this “girl” as his “GF.” Now, what’s a guy’s first instinct if everyone’s telling him, “‘ey, I heard you get girlfriend!” (well, would be said differently in S. Bend) if tha’s NOT his Gf? Well, a Grease will surmise 100% of guys will so, “no, she’s just a friend” at the very least.

This is just for starters. A Grease could go on. Go read the link Tsai provided. It’s the easiest “read between the lines” anyone’ll find.

If we’re to believe he’s (“‘s” deliberately used to include both “is” and “was” in that conjunction) one of Hawaii’s greatest scholar-athlete’s-NFL material, whatever, then — in a free society — we should be able to get the whole picture.

This ain’t fr1ckin’ North Korea and neither did Te’o (ahem) succeed within a Stalinist regime.

All other opinions hit a wall quickly with this situation. Don’t situate yourself into having that weird feeling in believing anything else.

“met” his girlfriend can also mean met online as in “we met online.”

if dad said the girl came over but we now know she didn’t…he was covering something up.

was he covering up the fact that his son fell in love with an online person and the father not being able to comprehend it and being more traditional made up a story about the girl coming over to make it seem real for himself and maybe reporters as well???

because right now with what we now these are the only pieces that would fit in my opinion.

i think there is also going to be speculation that manti might be gay before this all settles. simply because that’s one of the only other things that fits a story like this– when a father insists his son has a girlfriend with no photos of them together or anything else to really prove it. surely if she came over and spent time with manti or the family there wold be a photo of them together?

… aside from this, it may be a flat or conspiracy for a mid-season heisman campaign…but that seems doubtful to me.

Stilll would like UH in the MW. The talent level in the type of recruits the MW gets is better than the Big West attracts. And you need some stellar players to play deep in the tourney, in my opinion. Big West will always be a one-bid conference that is one-and-done in the Big Dance.

  263. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 7:03 pm

Folks should watch Imus In The Morning on (yeah, some of youse’ll need to fasten in once your hear THIS channel) The FOX News Network, channel 108 on ya’ll Oceanic digital dial. Warner Wolf (if not Bernie McGuirk) picks up on these sports newsies . . . and they have a ball with it, heh. Funny show.

  264. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 7:06 pm

Comes on about 12am (“best of Imus”) and the daily program begins at 1am. Worth watching if you like talk news and commentary. Don’t even have to watch as the show is basically a TV broadcast of Imus’ (“the I-man”‘s) radio show.

  265. WarriorNY January 16, 2013 7:09 pm

    Mr. Grease,

I always disagree with mr imus but I do enjoy his show. Quite entertaining…

  266. UHAlum91 January 16, 2013 7:11 pm

I call BS in Teo’s claim that he was a victim of a Hoax. His dad first says the GF comes to Hawaii to visit the son, but then later says they never met her. If she was a fake, and only communicated “online”, then how did he talk to her via the phone… Sometimes up to 8 hrs!!! Was he talking to someone else pretending to be his GF?!?!

I guess Brian Teo is gonna tell everyone to not watch ESPN or read SI, since they’re putting out all the neg publicity about his son. Thank God Teo never went to UH, we have enuff scandals already.

Then again, maybe that’s why Teo never chose UH ‘coz this island is too small and everyone knows each other for him make up a fake GF!!!

  267. WarriorNY January 16, 2013 7:12 pm

Alright, goodnight everyone… Great Job Again to the coaching staff on a great recruiting class!

  268. kapakahi January 16, 2013 7:15 pm

    #94,

That’s the last available huge local catch…..that is well within UH’s grasp.

Ironically SDSU staying in the MWC might actually hurt UH’s chances there.

  269. Gsky January 16, 2013 7:22 pm

Oh snap! We got Keith Kirkwood. What a freekin awesome recruiting class so far. Hopefully we’ll actually get to see them all make it here…you know with poaching and grades to deal with.

  270. mo808 January 16, 2013 7:23 pm

Welcome to the Warriors Keith Kirkwood!

  272. kapakahi January 16, 2013 7:32 pm

5 WR recruits (Haynes, Howard, Kemp, Kirkwood, Polk) thus far…..and still pursuing more (Barker and/or Masters).

JMHO but kinda ironic that this might turn out to be the most WRs signed in the same recruiting class for UH…..now running the Pro Set offense…..than ever signed during the JJ and Mack eras with the R-n-S offense (using 4 or 5 receivers)

  273. kapakahi January 16, 2013 7:39 pm

    #274,

Faga still considering UH but supposedly planning to go on LDS mission right out of high school before enrolling in college anyhow…..like Ursua and Lavaka did last year.

Faga would be a nice get…..but gonna be interesting to see what happens when he trips to BYU this weekend…..now that former Red Raider RB great Mark Atuaia is the Cougar RB coach.

  274. Derek January 16, 2013 7:44 pm

The KKK is coming to Hawaii, as in Kool Keith Kirkwood. Welcome to the Warrior program, Mr. Kirkwood. 6’4″, 210 lbs. Great size. We’ve now got 2 other 6’4″ WRs commits in Marcus Kemp and Stacy Howard. That’s a lot of leverage against smaller DBs. Great job coaches.

  275. jeezy33 January 16, 2013 8:02 pm

I respect Mormons decisions to go on missions but it almost isn’t smart to sign too many guys who go on missions football wise. After 2 years, almost like they are free agents again. I can’t recall 1 guy who came back from a mission making a huge impact for UH. Wadsworth left us. Moleni didn’t end up at Utah St and we have him now. I hope Ursua and Lavaka make it back.

  276. jeezy33 January 16, 2013 8:03 pm

    277. Think his nickname is Captain Kirk… saw in a article.

  282. DownSpout January 16, 2013 8:44 pm

What seemed fishy at the time was no news coverage of the girlfriend’s funeral. Even if Manti was “too busy” to attend, someone in the media would have covered it because of the well known human interest angle. Makes you wonder.

  283. Renee January 16, 2013 8:46 pm

Sweet blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News. Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Cheers.

  284. kev-1 January 16, 2013 9:05 pm

Am I the only one that is holding out hope that Manti is actually the victim? I’m not believing one way or the other yet, despite how naive that may sound. He may have been a part of this, as most of you already seem to have decided. But Notre Dame says that they launced their own investigation into it and have evidence to show that he was indeed a victim and can link it to certain individuals. The deadspin.com article raises more questions than it does provide answers, yet it seems the blog has decided to close the case based on that alone.

Am I being naive here? Maybe. But I’d rather do that than rush to judgement. It will easier to say “okay, I was wrong. I can’t believe that guy would do that.” Than it will be to say “oops, my bad. I guess he didn’t. Sorry I said all of those negative things about him.”

  285. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 9:06 pm

  288. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2013 9:15 pm

Chow is clearly targeting big perimeter players. I believe that’s three WRs coming in that are 6’3″ or taller. Chow also has 3 DBs that are 6’2″ and taller.

I thought one thing missing in JJ’s run-n-shoot was a large target to throw to in the red zone. Even JJ was stubborn about it and never really any 6’2″ or taller WRs at any time. He mainly stuck with the short quick guys that could run routes. A big WR or TE make is easier for the QB. It makes it easier when all you need to do is throw a jump ball when a 6’4″ WR is matched against a 5’9″ CB. Case in point: the last second TD UH gave up to lose to UNLV in 2009. The Rebels had a 6’4″ WR vs a 5’9″ CB (can’t remember names), but the CB had no chance as the WR was too tall and jumped too high.

Inside a Raising Canes restaurant in Las Vegas, they have a poster of that play in the restaurant. The WR catches the ball about 18″ above the CB’s out stretched hands.

The 2013 team will bare no resemblance of last year’s squad. At this point, I think there will be at least 7-8 new starters. All of which will be upgrades in talent except for Mike Edwards. There will be tremendous position battles in spring camp this year. The starting RB, both WRs, the QB, at least a couple OL spots will be up for grabs.

On the defensive side, every unit has starting spots up for grabs. I would think Matagiese and Samia would be the front runners at DT, but that might change once Moala, Ekuale, Tulimasealii enter in the fall, plus the other returnees that’ve improved over the offseason. The only LB I see that’s solidified their spot is Garcia-Williams. The other two spots are up for grabs. A ton of LBs got playing time because of injuries and were inconsistent, but all showed flashes of good play. In the secondary, both corners are up for grabs. I would think Ne’Quan would be a front runner for one spot as he’s become the leader of the team. I like Hardy-Tuliau and Merrell Jackson but the new commits will push them hard once they get to camp. IMO, Jackson is a stud. He, like Most of the newbies, looked like rookies, but now have a full season under their belt.

The greatest improvement usually happens when a player enters their 2nd year as a starter. So that bodes well for UH going into next year as the majority of last years starters were 1st time starters.

I can promise that Spring camp will be very exciting.

  289. gobows January 16, 2013 9:25 pm

#291 tank hopkins. worst db in the history of football. always there in perfect coverage, but allows the receiver to catch the ball. what a waste of athletic ability.

There seems to be a great propensity for some to throw stones.

Some people are quoting statements made by the father and attributing the same as if Manti said it. The sins of the father …We made a big fuss over the Muir matter and wanted to hear directly from him before making judgment.

Yet in Manti’s case, many seem to be rushing to judgment without hearing the evidence.

Should he kill himself before we start blaming the people that instigated the hoax instead of the victim?

  291. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 9:59 pm

Well. Hawaii’s # 1 news, KHON, had as their ONE sports story; yeah, you guessed it . . . Jersey # 5’s situation.

You know . . . if “the proper authorities are investigating,” he better hope they agree w/him. A Grease is still open-minded about this — in the interests of, as wise WarriorNY mentioned, “innocent until proven guilty” (then, again, we’re not in a court of law, here) — but, there are smart posteurs on this board alone and you see they’re not drinking the catfish-ade.

    # # #

  292. Derek January 16, 2013 10:16 pm

The 6’3″ or 6’4″ WR from UNLV who was taking our DBs to the cleaner was Philip Payne. Thankfully, he was a senior in 2011 so he’s gone. BYU’s Cody Hoffman is also 6’4″ and he has had good games against us. Big WRs are a handful. The best example is Calvin Johnson, 6’5″. Roddy White and Julio Jones are also in the 6’3 or 6’4 range. Randy Moss is 6’4″ or 6’5″ also.

  300. WarriorMojo January 16, 2013 10:59 pm

I wonder if the Teo clan appreciate just how precarious their position is right now. As I predicted above, ND has come out in support of Teo-as-victim. But of course they had no choice. ND, more than any other entity, benefited from the Teo feel good saga.

ND was mired in mediocrity for years, all that money and hype amounting to nothing. So when Teo comes along, with all the goodness he purported to symbolize, ND welcomed it with open arms. ND hitched its wagon to Teo and let Teo pull, to the point where ND and Teo became synonymous.

So Swarbrick’s statement of support today was an absolute given. There was no other choice. Did anyone expect ND to come out and say Teo was a POS and ND knew it all along?

The thing Teo needs to be wary of, however, is that Swarbrick repeatedly conditioned his support on statements made by Teo. But, when asked specific questions about instances where Teo’s tale is internally illogical, Swarbrick repeatedly says that such questions can only be answered by Manti or that they are part of a tale that only Manti can tell.

In that context Swarbrick’s statement was cynically brilliant. Someday soon Teo WILL have to answer pointed questions about this situation. If Manti’s story holds up, then ND can say, see, we told you so. But if Manti’s story crumbles, ND will leave Teo in the dust faster than Eddie Lacy did. The institution will always protect itself at the expense of an individual.

  301. Shadow January 16, 2013 11:06 pm

ESPN’s SportsCenter mentions that NFL teams are relentless at getting to the truth about potential draftees.

Better for Manti to come clean now on his own accord because the truth will come out in the end (for better or worse).

  302. SteveM January 16, 2013 11:09 pm

WarriorMojo — can you sing “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” opposite Esme? You two have done duets before but it been a while…

    😕

  303. Chicken Grease January 16, 2013 11:23 pm

Keep on, WarriorMojo. A Grease knows he said it before, but, man, you are right and righteous and a Grease hopes the rest of youse see WarriorMojos’ clarity and finesse of argument and discourse.

All ND was doing was damage control. Their handing over of the evidence to the Te’os was them being Pilate washing his hands after handing over Jesus (ooh, is this analogy much too close?)

In addition to what a Grease and many of you brought up, asked, and brilliantly offered, here are some other questions and ponderings we should have after today (’tis near midnight time in Hawaii-ne):

    • When Manti DID hear of the “GF”‘s passing, how or why are we supposed to buy the apparent disconnect? He apparently did not arrange to send flowers or sent no one on his behalf to attend her funeral, no? IF THERE WAS AN ADDRESS FOR THE FUNERAL, the “hoaxsters” walked a very thin, almost unsseeable thread — they would’ve had to mock up a funeral, say, if Te’o decided at the last minute — let’s say — to attend that funeral.

    • the post-death ‘phone call from the GF’s mobile. This is a Grease’s opinion (and a Grease don’t think he’s the only one thinking this). Her post death ‘phone call going to Te’o’s ‘phone directly would present a problem if someone in the press got wind of it. Perhaps this is where the “victim of a hoax” damage control (Grease being conservative about it here) was decided upon to start. A Grease would actually like to see this one ‘splained.

    • ND campus and all those girls. C’mon. This might be the ONLY long distance/never seen the girl-maybe seen the girl when she visited 0ahu when jersey # 5 was there as well that EVER worked for as long as it did.

    • This girl was touted — for a considerable amount of time — as his GIRLFRIEND.

    • If your GF was dying of leukemia — and this was reported more than once in the news with no apparent correction from the Te’o camp to say, say, “no, no, she’s NOT dying of leukemia — wouldn’t you go see her? AT least once?

    • the Te’o camp can’t expect the public to believe everything they say. They need to do some proving. They HAVE to know — at the very least -i that now that this Pandora’s box is opened, everyone else is not looking through their rose-colored glasses or whatever that camp is touting in handling this situation.

ESPN’s and the national outlet’s of doing a good job of being objective about things. SA is, too, with regard to Stephen Tsai’s link of the story. KHON, at least with this evening’s news, seems to be fixated on “the hoax victim” angle.

Maybe they can spin it. But, we’re smart enough to see through it.

  304. Konoman1 January 16, 2013 11:39 pm

    I hear voices….

    – I’m disappointed that the negative media attention surrounding M/T is taking away from the recent UH recruiting success.

    – I have been soundly scolded by the panhandler at the Kapolei Safeway store for being easily distracted by the Media buzz, and forgetting about his situation.

    – I blamed DeMello & RK for making it such a big deal on their Sports report last nite..

    – Hopefully the Te’o family can put up a strong *Protect* defense, ’cause ‘Prevent’ is pau already!

    – Good thing ST is not on the Te’o family ‘chit’ list. As our fearless leader has stated, and I loosely translate, No M/T stories have been written by him for public consumption in the past few years.

    – I had my reason for not buying into the M/T myth back wen Warrior Mojo was also flying the red flag. Peeps were upset, but hey…this wasn’t even about the mess he’s in now!

    – As they peel back the layers of lies, maybe they’ll find the truth.

boobie curran has no credibility, only a blind fool thinks otherwise. why waste time listening to a rude cry baby jerk who happens to be the worst college football play-by-play announcer in the history of radio broadcasting.

he talks about attending football practices, but he lies. I’ve been to over 50 UH football practices (mostly jj’s) and curran is hardly ever there. they might broadcast their show from the field a few times a year, other than that he sometimes showed up at the field at the end of practice.

    1. He’s a Punahou School alum.

    2. He got bowled over by Bama.

    3. He’s a prodigy son of Kahuku.

    4. Following in the footsteps of Wie & Obama.

    9. Not worth the effort to name 5 thru 8.

    10. Papa Te’o.

  341. Kevin January 17, 2013 8:06 am

    Kekoa,

This blog has also done its share of taking away from any UH news as the very people that speak out against Teo were and continue to be the ones that type and pass along his name on a continue basis right here more than anyone else.

Sports fans are NOT the brightest or the most consistent “conversationalists” to begin with anyway.
