Two wins by Hawaii last week did not help the Rainbow Wahine in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index released today.
Hawaii (18-4), up a spot to No. 12 in today’s coaches poll, dropped a spot to No. 16 in the computer-generated power rankings used by the NCAA for postseason seedings and hosting duties for 16 schools for the first and second rounds. The RPI measures wins, losses, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule.
The Rainbow Wahine were No. 3 in the first RPI of the season three weeks ago but have slipped since then, in part to losing three of four conference losses last month. Two weeks ago, Hawaii was No. 13 and then No. 15 last week.
The top four teams in the RPI remained the same as last week, led by Texas. Penn State was No. 2, Florida No. 3 and Washingon No. 4.
The RPI somewhat mirrored the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll also announced today.The top eight teams remained unchanged, led by Texas (17-2), which received 41 of the 60 first-place votes.
Penn State (20-2) was second with 14 votes and Washington (19-1) third with five votes.
Rounding out the top eight were USC (20-3), Florida (22-2), Stanford (15-5), Missouri (27-0) and San Diego (19-3). Minnesota (21-4) and Colorado State (21-0) traded places, with the Golden Gophers moving up a spot to No. 9 and the Rams dropping a spot to No. 10. Nebraska (17-4) remained at No. 11.
Hawaii moved into UNC’s spot at No. 12 after the Tar Heels (20-3) lost twice last week. UNC fell to No. 19.

6. Daylight Savings Time is over.
Speaking of recruiting next signing period Nov 13-20.We already know of four 2014 commitments expected to sign but I still think there is another 2014 one out there who might be joining the others.
I’ve been watching certain places and asking around about her intentions but no one seems to have anything.
CSUN and UCSB are not in the range of at large bid. Big West is a max 2 bid league this year (including Hawaii)
#1 if Hawaii doesn’t host hope they get sent someplace cold not warm. Sent them to Kansas or Creighton, or Marquette.
I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if they go to San Diego though, just no USC, Stanford, or Washington.

ok, so does the drop in rpi not expected? I mean losing to three teams with lower rpi’s is kind of a kiss of death? I was told early on this season by one volleyball coach, that Hawaii would probably still have had to remain really high in the RPI’s in order to host the 1st and 2nd rounds. Anything else will have them travel. I guess now that this happened, they will travel. Maybe travelling was inevitable all along? Should UH care about the RPI after several years of recent
let downs when the seedings came out? And now that they are not in first place in the conference, does being 16 RPI mean they won’t be invited to the tournament at all? Is that even possible?
Vbfan (message #10): My question is what if both CSUN and UCSB tie for first place? Of course, they have yet to meet. But both of them have yet to play a repeat match with Hawaii so anything can happen. Then the NCAA has to allow both of them to play in the playoffs and Hawaii could be left out complete with just one more loss.
#17 if they tie for first the Big West has tiebreaker procedures. Whoever wins the tiebreaker gets the automatic bid. It’s tough luck for whoever loses the tiebreaker.
Hawaii is not going to be left out, their RPI is still well within at large range.
Changing topics, with 6 scholarship players graduating and only 3 scholarship recruits coming in I expect we me see a transfer or two in the offseason.
Would love to see Alohi in a Wahine uniform. Don’t know where she would fit as far as position but her makeup is Wahine dna . She has the skills to play multiple positions on a volleyball court. A child from UH playing volleyball parents is as natural as it gets. She is such a winner I hope she signs for basketball if volleyball doesn’t work out. She could be similar to Kalei Adolpho but is very much a different type of athlete. Good luck to her in wherever she ends up.
With a #16 RPI at present, there is a strong chance that Hawaii will drop down further, since it will be playing Riverside with its one-win overall and no-win conference record. Hawaii will make the NCAA tourney even if it loses two or three more matches this season. Hawaii has a bit of leeway, since 64 teams make the NCAA field and those possible losses will still result in a RPI in the thirties at least. I pretty much think that Hawaii will not host if it is not in the top 16 even though the selection committee has a bit more latitude this year. Travel distance always seem to loom large in the selection committees’ decision on Hawaii’s hosting.

Move Alohi to the right and she can set/hit a 6-2 if needed. To me her hitting and seting are equal but its her calm demeanor on the court that is sorely needed at UH. She could play left but her talant would be wasted.

Looking at the recruits the BCS schools snag, na wahine will be very luck to see another final 4.
i thought they had a chance this year BUT… teams like PSU, Nebraska, Stanford, Texas, are very deep talent wise and can constantly tweak their lineups as the season progresses. IMHO UH doesn’t have the luxury of that type of depth so they seem to be stuck with rotational changes not personnel changes…
of course i hope i’m wrong.

to those who are worrying about it … no worries, hawaii will make the tournament even if they do not end up winning the big west (and mathematically, hawaii is still very much in contention to win the big west).
hawaii’s rpi is 16. typically the cutoff point in the rpi for at large bids is in the mid-40s. so something drastic would have to happen, and hawaii would have to drop a helluva lot, before they are left out of the ncaa tournament.
as far as a seed is concerned, if hawaii can somehow hold on to a place in the top 16 of the rpi, they just might be given a seed (and hosting duties). hawaii, imo, has a good nitty gritty this year, even with the conference losses. it will all depend on who else is on the bubble for a seed, and whether the ‘nitty gritty’ of their schedules is better than hawaii, i.e. what are their records against top 25 rpi teams, and top 50 rpi teams.
we’ll have to see. there are different rpi projections being thrown around on VTalk … and at least one of them has hawaii finishing at 16. so they have a shot. (but of course, take those projections for what they’re worth.) nothing is set in stone. and yes, hawaii has to take care of business from here on out.

In addition to utilizing Higgins in a 6-2 rotation against good service teams who expose our setting, and, thus, predictability weaknesses, Higgins can strengthen our service game. We lost a large part of that in the departure of the Unnamed One. If our serving lineup consists of Higgins and Hartong (jump), Mendoza (ala Samantha Bricio), and Uiato and Longo (floater), we would have a respected service game.
We will need Higgins’ serve even more after Hartong is gone. Higgins’ serving against a practice squad won’t get her up to speed. Higgins is not red-shirting, so her current level of usage is wasting an opportunity to develop her.
That’s what I would respectfully suggest to Coach if I found myself next to him in the cashier’s line at Long’s or Tamura’s.
Better get to voting for Em and tell all of your friends. Florida just discovered that Mann is a finalist. Hartong’s former club Mizuno just got wind of it yesterday and started a campaign with their members.

Question: If a player is on Sand Volleyball scholarship THIS season, can they receive an Indoor Volleyball scholarship the following year?
39. Ki. No, she’ll have to sit 2 indoor seasons. So if she sat 2013 indoor and got a sand for 2014 spring she still have to sit the 2014 Fall indoor.

Actually 4, Taylor, Olevao, Long and Passi. With Greeley I’m sure UH will pick up a transfer a JC player or even hopefully one of two local girls that UH still have a chance with. It’s been said you’ll never have enough OH’s on the roster.
Next Wednesday is the first day of the early signing period for the verbal commits.

I don’t think there is another JC transfer other than Passi. A DI transfer I think is more likely.

Another name for 2014 is Megan Huff, the last recruit on visit here during the Fullerton, Riverside matches. Guess we’ll find out as early as next Wednesday who’s on board.
Alohi Robins decided on BYU! Hopefully within her college career, she transfers back to UH because I think she would be essential on this Wahine team! But glad to hear that she got a full ride in Basketball and is going to play volleyball also.
